I'm a retired commercial diver & underwater contractor. I've been an on-again, off-again pipe aficionado since the early 90s but it's only been in the last couple of years, since my retirement, that I've been able to fully enjoy the hobby.
My first, and for years, only two pipes were gifts with no identifiable markings & only say "Italy" & "Czech" on the side. They're briar, obviously better than baskets & are still like old friends despite probably never being worth more than $40. I also have a Brigham Voyager 123 which turned out to be one of my favorite pipes despite my initial misgivings. Then there's a basket pipe simply stamped "Garden" that I should've thrown out because I had to finish drilling the stem out myself. My nicest pipes are a Rossi Rubino Antico & a Savinelli Dolomiti which are the special occasion "Limos" of my collection. Finally I have low end Missouri Meerschaum cob for work & a M.M. Charles Towne Cobbler which I really enjoy.
