I was a smoker of mostly unfiltered cigarettes for more than 20 years, always seeking the best tobaccos (i.e Players Navy Cut, Karelia, Capstan and others) but the perfect smoke somehow eluded me. I first smoked a pipe at around the same time I took up cigarettes, my first tobacco being Erinmore, which I did not realize was aromatized, and I did smoke some other good tobaccos like Capstan and some McClelland blends I brought back home from a trip to New York (Christmas Cheer 2003, Arcadia, Black Shag) along with a couple of corn cobs. Yet pipe smoking did not grow on me more than just a rare and occasional pleasure. Around Spring time in 2016, wanting to quit smoking cigarettes I tried vaping but still I needed a real smoke in the morning with my coffee, so instead of having a cigarette I lit up a pipe. I had some Arcadia left in a tin for more than ten years and when it finished I went out to buy a new tobacco. The one I chose was Davidoff’s Scottish Mixture and I was mesmerized. I could not believe that tobacco smoking could be so pleasurable. With cigarettes it had been like the Oscar Wilde saying “A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?” Well, with Scottish mixture I was experiencing a perfect pleasure which left me completely satisfied… The course of events thereafter was inevitable; I quit vaping and took up pipe smoking… My next venture to tobaccos was with pure Oriental leafs which were available at the time in Greece, Epos Basma and Epos Izmir. I still regard them as the best pure Oriental leafs I have ever tried. These tobaccos induced to me a soft spot for Oriental mixtures. I do like Latakia mixtures but when Latakia is more than a condiment I consider them as desert tobacco and do not smoke them very often. I like straight Virginias flakes or ribbons, though FVF is far from being my favourite. Quite often I mix straight Virginias with Oriental leafs. I also like scented Virginias and the Lakelands are my other soft spot. I do enjoy Vapers and Dark Fired tobaccos but only for occasional use. Generally I like most of the tobaccos I buy (thanks to TobaccoReviews which allows one to make a researched choice) and I do like some aromatics as a change when their taste is not chemical.

I enjoy reviewing and reading other’s reviews on tobaccos on TobaccoReviews.com and I wish it were possible to comment on each other.

I started smoking in corn cobs but on the way I bought some briars as well. Still I invest more on tobacco than on pipes. I enjoy my Peterson 119 Aran and a couple of classical English designs from Bentely. Lightweight and reliable. Most of my pipes are filtered but I also have a beautiful 30 year old unfiltered Stanwell with a bamboo stem.
