I started smoking a RYO called white ox, which is a dark fire cured tobacco, my graduation to pipes was inevitable.
I love dark varieties and blends, Virginias are lovely in this respect. Also very fond of cherry aromatics, as i find this to be a complicated flavour for any tobacco company to master.
As far as pipes are concerned, briars are king. We all know this. And the humble corncob is always a winner. I own multiple pipes, but dont use filters. Im yet to find a pipe that i would consider my 'go to' pipe, as they all have varying qualities. And to be honest, I have found $5 corncobs that smoke better than estate pipes worth hundreds.
Tobacco; i purchase new varieties in sample packs of 10 grams, then decide if its worth a larger purchase for cellaring, which is accomplished using mason jars for varieties that need to breath, and hemostatic re-sealable pouches for varieties that like a slight choke hold on their oxygen. Hemostatic pouches, when placed in a warmer area, can further ferment the tobacco, altering it dramatically. So be careful, and as usual....
