I'm not rich and I'm never going to be. That means as a quality tobacco smoker, I have to choose what I buy carefully. Generally speaking I keep about a hundred tobaccos on hand. 10% of them aromatics, 50% of them English blends, and and the rest Virginia and American blends. Cobs are without a doubt my favorite type of pipe for many reasons. I prefer to spend my extra money on tobacco and not pipes. I have fancy pipes too (mostly gifts)
however they stay at home or I will lose them. I prefer to smoke pipes when I am alone and rarely in the company of other people. I cannot stand pretentious pipe smokers, but I do understand that most of us started out that way.
Furthermore. My reviews aren't very technical. I don't enjoy the idea of judging a tobacco's strength of flavor versus its strength of nicotine. Room note, tin note blah blah blah. I try to just explained to the reader why I like a particular tobacco, in my own words. Reviews that I write are aimed at the seasoned non aromatic tobacco smoker. If it seems like my reviews are overwhelmingly positive and I just give everything a good review, there's a reason for that. It's because I tend to mostly review tobacco that I like.
Futhermore, a few things I find incredibly annoying in other people's tobacco reviews.:
First, people get a little carried away comparing tobacco to food. Referencing everything from chocolate cake to cotton candy to soda pop to a delicious steak dinner. Now honestly there are some tobacco's I find so appealing but I will salivate upon thinking about them, like dunhill 965. But this is a very different thing from actually trying to enjoy tobacco in the same way as people enjoy food. I think this is much more common amongst people who are new to the hobby, or people who aren't really regular tobacco users.
Another annoyance is when people write reviews as if it were poetry. They attempt to use fancy words or to demonstrate their illustrious vocabulary by jamming as many words into their review as possible, or attempting to make them cute like the night before Christmas or something. A review should simply be your thoughts on a particular tobacco expressed in your words. It's not a work of art and whenever I read a review like that, I stop immediately and move to another. I refuse to be an audience to someone's attempt at entertaining.
