I discovered pipesmoking when I was 20 years old while in Cannon Beach, OR. At the time, no one my age smoked a pipe and most of my peers considered Swisher Sweets as an acceptable cigar for special occasions. Thanks to a well-traveled and ahead-of-his-time friend, I was introduced to pipesmoking. Sweet aromatics were preferred and non-aromatics were missunderstood at first. Years later, while shopping for premium cigars which dominated my tobacco experience at the time, I bought a tin of Davidoff English. This quickly led to Dunhill Flake, then GL Pease Jacknife plug then... Now I go to my favorite site, 4noggins.com, and spend my entire "allowance" of $50/month on fine pipe tobacco.

My first pipe was a $20 "basket pipe" of briar, purchased from Rich's Tobacco Shop in Portland, OR. It still delivers such a consistently good smoke that it is difficult to justify the purchase of expensive pipes -but not impossible! I own a beautiful Astley's Dublin and a James Upshall prince and Petersen System pipe, all of which smoke great but I have learned that an equally pleasant smoke can be delivered from a $5 corncob pipe. This leads me to conclude that for me, it's not the pipe you have, but the tobacco and technique you use. No lewd inference intended. :)
