Aiming too high? Certainly not! This blend can hardly be surpassed: Just opening the tin is a feast for the eye. Rich and aromatic, full bodied bouquet, a smooth and gentle smoke.
Notes: Identical casing as "Sweet Vanilla Honeydew".
MA Perfect Blend in the gold tin is the closest to tobacco taste you will get within the entire MA range. Compared to it’s VA sibling (SVHD) it is mildly cased with the honey/vanilla/molasses type aroma and a totally different beast. Black Cavendish tobaccos dominate the view accompanied by some bright VA spots. Out of a fresh tin it has some edge also that unique sweet soda kind of feeling to it, that all MA blends share. Not bad, but nothing to write home about either. Fresh somewhat recommended.
But: This is in fact an aromatic that ages well. I bought a new tin directly from Michael Apitz himself, opened it, smoked one or two average pipes and forgot about it for 9 years (accidently though)! The Perfect Blend stayed not only in perfect condition but now tastes better than ever. Smooth sweet harmony on par with toasty, roasted aged tobacco notes. Hopefully a couple of weeks do the trick as well. All MAs are designed to be smoked with a charcoal filter, but after some aging I wouldn’t dare to put anything in between the both of us. Aged highly recommended to lovers of good aromatics.
It takes some nerve to call any pipe tobacco perfect.
The first thing that came to my mind when I opened the tin was that Perfect Blend smells a lot like Sweet Vanilla Honeydew. And in fact, the casing and top flavor appear to be exactly the same, the only difference being that this ready rubbed mixture consists mainly of Black Cavendish and just a few sprinkles of Virginia. Anyhow, the sweet scent of Vanilla is overpowering with just a tinge of brown bread and honey underneath.
Don't pack your pipe too tightly with this one. I prefer the Frank method. It takes two or three lights to get it burning evenly. After that it needs to be smoked coolly and with care. This is a full bodied, creamy smoke with a distinct sweet vanilla taste, which strangely seems more dominating to me than in Sweet Vanilla Honeydew. The tobacco appears to get stronger towards the end of the bowl.
The room note is rich and sweet. It's a crowd pleaser.
Is this blend really perfect? Certainly not, but it's a good quality aromatic that'll appeal to those like to smoke custard.
