Rattray – Union Jack.

One of Rattray’s newer aromatic offerings. The aromatic journey begins with the aroma from the unlit blend. The addition of amaretto is unquestionable. The presentation of it’s quite coarse, there are a few twiggy pieces, albeit, nothing which needs to be discarded. This arrived with the right moisture for immediate smoking.

The smoke, as I anticipated, carries a crystal-clear amaretto taste; nutty, with the piquancy of alcohol. Of the tobaccos I find the Burley has the most magnitude, the natural nutty character intertwining perfectly with the almonds in the amaretto. The Virginia acts as the base/platform for the Burley, and the black Cavendish lends a touch of softness. The smoke, although it’s obviously flavoured, refrains from biting. It burns at an average speed, has a medium temperature, and only requires sporadic maintenance.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: nice.

Almond.. If you like almond try this blend. It's not a complex blend that changes throught the bowel its a synthetic almond.

Medium sweet and a solid taste that lasts throught the bowel. Nic level is low to low medium. I tried this and petersons senset breeze also almond and this one smokes better for me. The smell of the petersons is more refined but does not translate through combustion. The Rattrays is more almond and chemical almond but the flavour is more robust and comes through the pipe.

Not an all day smoke or my top shelf but like all Rattaray's tobacco it is quality and works. Worth a go if you want a good basic Aero that tastes of almond and is not sweet sweet. I never had to try to like it it was good from the start.

Not to wet and burned fine from the tin with no gloop and not a sticky mess. Dark in colour with the odd gold flecks. No tin notes to describe contents but suspect vg burley and black cavendish as the base.

Pipe Used: various briar

This won’t be a complex review, I’ll try to make it straight to the point. The first thing that catches your attention is the smell... when you open the tin, there will be an explosion of smell and if you leave this tobacco to try, your entire room will be perfumed. The smoke also has a very strong smell, but pleasant. You need to dry this at least 10 minutes, as it’s very wet and sticky. It doesn’t bite and burns decent. Mild to medium strenght. The taste is too chemical for me. The taste as well as the smell resemble a lot with W.O. Larsen 1864. The smoke is creamy, you feel a sweet taste that indeed resembles Amaretto. An aromatic fan would probably appreciate it more, especially those who like W.O. Larsen tobaccos. But this isn’t for me and I wouldn’t buy another tin (like I wouldn’t buy another W.O. Larsen tin). However, if you really want to impress people around you with a great smell, this is the tobacco that’s gonna do it. But as a smoking experience, it’s mediocre.
