A match of Troost "Aromatic". This is a very traditional Cavendish-style tobacco, made of superb Virginias, Burleys, and Orientals, processed with a special method that develops a rich, smooth flavor with a pleasant aroma.

Notes: Sutliff's match of Troost Aromatic Cavendish.

The gold Virginia cavendish provides tart and tangy citrus, sugar and honey bread notes with a little grass as the main component. The nutty, earthy, toasty burley is a condiment. A pinch of earthy Oriental provides a floral note, a little wood, vegetation, and not much else. The toppings are mild butterscotch and a more obvious caramel. They are mildly fruity and tone down the tobacco a bit. The original has a little deeper flavor, but it’s bitey if you puff very fast, and can lose just a little of its flavor when that happens. The latter two observations are not true of the Match, which is much smoother, will not bite, and is moderately close in taste to the original. The flavor doesn't weaken near the finish or if you puff beyond a reasonable pace, which can happen to the original, especially if the tobacco is dry. The coarse cut of the tobacco is the same. Both have very little nicotine. The strength is a step past the mild mark. The taste is close to the center of mild to medium. It burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a very consistent taste. Both leaves hardly any moisture at the bottom of the bowl, and need an average number of relights. Both have an short lived, pleasant after taste and room note. Both are all day smokes. I gave the original two stars. This gets three because of the lack of bite, and it's smoother than the original even if it isn't a perfect match.

Sutliff Tobacco Co. - Match Troost Aromatic Cavendish.

The original Troost Aromatic was badged as shag cut when I reviewed it but I pointed out, in fact, it's a coarse cut/broken flake. This is even coarser! Despite all the negativity aimed at V.R. Troost I recommended it, I enjoyed it. So, the match, any good?

A burn's easy enough to initiate, and like what it attempts to emulate I enjoy it. The same as the original it's quite a sweet tasting aromatic: honey and butterscotch, on top of good quality Cavendish. It seems a little cooler as it smokes, due to the coarser cut. But, the original wasn't exactly 'hot'! I've smoked this alongside a bowl of the Van Rossems one and a big difference is the original needs fewer tamps/relights. But, this is still a good enough smoke for three stars!

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: pleasant.

I liked the original Van Rossems Troost Aromatic Cavendish and still have some stashed. So, on a whim, I got some of the match. Smoking the two side by side, they weren't exactly the same but close enough for rock and roll. I actually find the match somewhat more flavorful. I actually ordered a pound this morning. There's enough oriental to keep ones interest and the added flavors are sweet without being cloying. It's a good easy all day smoke. If you were a fan of troost aro, you won't be let down.

Mild Very Mild Mild Very Pleasant

When I open the pouch I see what looks like the original Troost blend. The aroma and feel of the tobacco brings back memories of the old blend. The room note is far better than I remember and those around me just loved the aroma. Cant wait to buy more!

Very Mild Mild Mild Pleasant to Tolerable

I never tried the original Troost. I always heard it was a decent smoke so I decided to give the Sutliff version a try. It's nothing to write home about. While not horrible it ain't great either. It's just a slightly below average run of the mill aromatic. Very mild without much flavor. It has a kind of burnt sugar after taste to me. I didn't care for it at all.

Never smoked much of the original. That was in the late 70's. I only smoke the match once and a while. I definitely taste citrus. Maybe some pumpernickel bread. The orientals make me think of McClelland's Grand Orientals but which one I don't know. Opens my sinuses for some reason which is interesting. The Cavendish seems unsweetened to me. Has a unique overall flavor that intrigues me. There is some spice here but tame. Please keep in mind that though I'm 70 years old I'm new to reviewing tobacco blends. No connoisseur for sure.
