The various Virginias are mostly grassy with tart and tangy citrus, and minor tangy dark fruit notes, and mostly form the base for the other components. The burleys offer earth, wood, nuts and a little molasses as an obvious supporting player. The brown sugar from the black cavendish adds a smooth and creamy undertone all the way through. The smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia is a team player that plays nearly at the same level of the burleys. There is a slight sweetness from a topping - most likely sugar - though it’s not distracting from the tobacco taste. Lacks a little body. The strength and nic-hit are just past the mild mark. The taste is in the center of mild to medium. Won’t bite or get harsh, and has few rough edges. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a very consistent sweet and more savory flavor from start to finish. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. The after taste and room notes are short lived, but pleasant. An all day sweet American English that could well serve one delving into this genre for the first time.

This is one of those easy smoking English/Scottish blends. I really enjoy it and it is quite the bargain as well. It has a sweetener added to it, but I don't know whether it is topped cased in whole or if just some of the Cavendish or burley is treated in such a way, but there is something sugary to this blend, to my tastes, perhaps a bit of vanilla.

Unlike other blends of this sort the sweetness does not stand in stark contrast to the smoky Latakia. Rather it compliments it in a nice way. The Latakia is also present and is not hiding at all. Of this sort of blend this is one of the better that I have tried. I would put this in the company of Bald headed teacher and distinguished gentleman, but better than those two.

I recommend this for what it is, but would probably highly recommend it for someone just venturing into Lat blends. Also highly recommended to anyone on a budget as it is quite the bargain.

So I've read about this blend a good bit. From other favorable reviews this seemed to be just my ticket. As it turns out it is. The leaf is a nice consistent cut with a bright variety of colors. Not the usual English oily black. The Virginias look great against the Burley and Latakia. The smell out of the bag is a pleasant smokey aroma. All tobacco leaf here, no garbage stems and such. My first batch required quite a bit of drying but this was due to the tobacconist. He keeps it almost to the point of soaking wet. Needless to say I won't be going back. After hours of plate drying I packed a full bowl in a Peterson Kinsale XL15. It has a nice initial light with a very traditional English flavor. The Burley adds a nice full billow of smoke which I find particularly enjoyable. Burning through I felt like I was rushing the smoke. I really enjoyed the natural sweet taste. I didn't have much complexity to the taste. Once in a while I picked up a touch of a peppery zing. Mainly just a sweet creamy flavor. I felt as though it was enjoyable through. Not a tremendous nicotine hit by my standards. I really like this blend just about any time of the day. Perfect with a full dark roast coffee.

This is a very mild blend, basically an English, with the addition of Burley in greater amounts, which tends to create a slightly different flavor than the standard English blend. I'm going to state that many blends that do not list the burley content, actually have some burley in it, (I believe Greg Pease will agree with me on this). While English Cavendish is supposed to be made from VA, the word cavendish can mean either burley or VA, or a combination of both, and defines more of a process than a particular tobacco. Anyway, this blend actually has a decent content of Burley, outside of any that may be present in the form of the cavendish component. I don't know the exact formula but I would wager the burley content is relatively significant. The good thing about Burley is that in proper amounts, it can add a pleasant foundation to the blend, while taking on some of the characteristics of the other tobaccos, but too much can actually reduce the dimensional aspects of the blend. This blend balances the burley content nicely with the Lat/VA. I am smoking a 5 year old sample from one of my jars, so the fact that the Latakia is pushed a bit to the back during presentation may be in part due to the age (Lat can mellow with age) of this tobacco, and there is some loss of complexity due both to the age, and to the fact that it is aged with burley which tends to absorb, for lack of a better term, some of the distinct complexities of a blend over time. Still, there is a subtle nutty and sweet flavor with a small woody element to the smoke, which would likely be more notable if the blend had not been aged. The blend smokes cool and dry. Very few relights needed. I don't recommend aging this tobacco for long periods. Buy it in amounts that you will use within a 6-12 month period.

Jan 2017 update: I'm moving this blend up to 3 stars. Not sure if my tastes have changed, or I'm just getting more of a sweet tooth, but this blend does an exceptional job of conveying a touch of sugar to the palate. It's not a full dimensional English, but it is pretty good for an all day.

2021 update: I should have updated this 2 yrs ago. I'm moving this to 4 stars. This should serve as an example of how our tastes change over time. Some of it is perhaps due to subtle shifts in body chemistry. This tobacco blend has become a mainstay in my rotation.

English Luxury presents as a wide array of dark to light brown ribbons. The nose from the bulk bag is smokey sweet yet subdued, musty and earthy.

The charring light takes quickly, as this blend ships ready to smoke in terms of moisture content. It's surprisingly dry for an aromatic English, and brings much less sweetness than one might expect. I get musty, earthy, damp, mushroom flavors from the Latakia with a very neutral burley base - parchment and wood rather than overt nutty or chocolatey flavors. The Virginia is smooth and mild, and far in the background. The Cavendish is truly unflavored and adds a subtle sweetness to balance out the blend.

While the Latakia here is damp and musty in flavor, the blend itself smokes surprisingly dry. The Burley and Virginia are remarkably smooth and biteless. This blend reminds me of Wilke No.5 without the trademark Wilke flavoring on the Cavendish, dryer smoking, and less sweet. Another comparison would be a lighter, more mild version of Black Mallory.

English Luxury could be an all-day smoke, a great introduction to Latakia blends, or a solid choice of an aromatic English for those wanting only a touch of sweet within a smooth smoke that still imparts a Latakia flavor. Though an import, English Luxury is an outstanding and understated example of an American English blend. There is absolutely no bite to be found in this blend.

The addition of cavendish makes for a slightly sweeter and more aromatic smoke than the English Oriental Supreme. Sometimes it's exactly what I want. Always a pleasant smoke. It's also very mild (no tongue bite), and leaves a very nice room note. My wife loves it. This may just be the best deal in bulk tobacco out there. Not the most exhilarating perhaps, but very very well done.

Update: I bought a pound of this and it's a quite different than my first sample. Less sweet and more subdued aroma. More bite. I liked the first batch more, so I am downgrading it to 3 stars to average out.

I remember this tobacco being better when fresh. I left about an ounce sitting in the cellar (a ball jar) for about a year and it aged horribly. Tastes like dust. I assume this is because of the burley/cavendish. I thought the Virginias would have aged the blend, but I could not detect them at all. The latakia was nonexistent. I remember liking this blend quite a lot at one point, so I would take this more as a caution against aging, rather than a real critique.

Once you get this to the proper humidity level, English Luxury gets my vote as the most user friendly, smokeable English blend you can lay your hands on.

It has little complexity, Latakia depth or strength. However, it has

1) Absolutely no bite at any speed, it's impossible to get this to misbehave 2) Virtually no PG, 3) Pleasing room note, 4) Very smooth, rich mouthfeel, 5) Subtle sweetness under the surface, 5) A balanced, English flavor, with the taste of Latakia always present. 6) Mild (very mild) nicotine. It's also cheap.

I'd reccomend this as your first tobacco, your first English or I'd reccomend it to anyone as a change of pace.

Yet another of the bombing gifts from BoB. I got a few ounces of it and am smoking the final bowl now. I have to say, I will miss this one.

The tin note is Latakia heavy and smokey. The cut is a finer ribbon, nice looking. It packs and lights pretty easy. Not much bad to say about this blend in general. It has a good consistent flavor that is well balanced. Nothing stands out too much. I'm not sure about any topping here. I get little hints of sweetness here and there that I can't place a finger on. The strength is mild, maybe medium for some.

I don't know if I would recommend this to those who enjoy full English mixtures. Newer smokers will love it though. I've been enjoying it as a good change of pace from my normal heavier fare in the English family.

I would rate this at the highest mark if the playing field were leveled to include only English blends. I do not prefer English blends, but occasionally get struck by a mood for one. When the mood strikes this is my standby. There are some complexities you will pick up on even as a novice to English blends (but enough for the seasoned English smoker as well), and latakia burns coolest of all tobaccos, so all combined this is an overall pleasurable experience. My local tobacconist says this isn't a blend for married folk, as wives often despise the smell of latakia.

While others suggest this as a first English, it was, as it so happened, my first English, obtained in bulk. It was well loved through many bowls until overtaken by the stronger, more latakia- laden blends. Good for its purpose, there is no going back, so be warned before picking up the 965 or the Nightcap.

English luxury by Peter Stokkebye is one of those stumbled-upon treasures. Just yesterday, I took a trip to the smoke shop and perchased a medico pipe. I just had to buy some tobaccos. One of these was English luxury. The store owner said that this blend was one of her highest selling tobaccos. When I got home, I started working on Calculus problems and smoking this English luxury. I noticed something unsusual about this blend. It had a smokey aroma to it which reminded me of going through the Sweat lodge ceremony with my uncle (who is now the chief or tribal chairman of the Potowatomi). For my Native American family members, pipe tobacco is a very important aspect of thier lives. Most of the tobaccos I am familiar with are the aromatics found in grocery stores. Compared to English luxery, none of those blends compare to this favored blend. It leaves a very pleasant room note. The taste is stonger than any tobacco I have tried. Out of all of the blends I've tried I would recommend this blend to anyone who needs an enjoyable smoke. I have found my holy grail!

This is one of my favorite English blends to come to. It burns great, tastes great, and smells quite alright. It doesn't have anything special about it going on, but that's what you want out of a high-quality English blend. It's something I would smoke everyday if I could afford myself the time to.

UPDATE: After trying more English blends, it is sad to say but I must drop this review from four to three stars. It is still great and definitely a high three.

Peter Stokkebye - English Luxury (No.17).

The initial smell from the pouch suggests a casing/topping of some kind, vanilla seems the most probable suspect. It contains a higher proportion of lighter pieces in comparison to black ones: about a 65-35% split, roughly. The moistness was good when received.

If you're looking for a Lat-Bomb look elsewhere. A Lat-Bomb this is not, but it's quite a well rounded smoke. The Black Cavendish is at just the right weight to give a flavour, without making it seem like a sticky, gloopy, mess. To me the Latakia has an edge on the others, but that doesn't make it a bomb. The Lat' has a woody-smokiness, but is very well supported by the rest. The Burley seems to have been added in a larger amount compared to the Virginia: this is further down the pecking order. In the smoke, like I noted from the pouch-note, there's a sort of vanilla/custard flavour; it doesn't taste steadfastly aromatic, but is notable nevertheless. It's reliable with the burn, but unless taken carefully it can go too fast. Another problem's tongue bite, again, if I'm not careful it can nip.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: doesn't smell to bad but it fills the room with smoke.

English Luxury? I like the flavour so II'll be generous and forget the bite! Three stars:

Somewhat recommended.

Another winner in the Peter Stokkebye blends. This is an unusual English. Not overpowering like most English blends. No Latakia over-kill at all. I even detect a faint citrus taste. I would almost classify this as an Aromatic English. There's something sweet in the first light, but not overly so. Of most of the English blends I've smoked, this one would have to be in my top five.

I've been holding off writing this review in order to make sure I haven't lost my senses. Alas ... irrespective of the discovery I will write anyway.

I have been smoking - for the last month - almost exclusively English Luxury. It is not a Latakia Dump, it is not a flavored tobacco other than the mildest of Black Cav which of and in itself is probably the most subtle example of Black Cavendish I have ever experienced as a component of a fine blend.

This is my all day smoke of choice right now... and of course, I'm fickle, moody and always reserve the right to change horses... but... this is fine stuff, nonetheless.

Key to my experience is smoking a stock that has a year of age on it. The fine ribbon is easy to pack, lights up right away ... and never bites ... providing you remember that this tobacco is for puffing - not huffing.

For a mild to medium strength it packs a lot flavor and is interesting. It isn't complex in the sense that it changes. It starts ... hums ... and ends the same. However the spectrum of enjoyment is play of subtle orientals (although the ingredients do not list any specific orientals - I believe they exist here), latakia in condimental proportions (not unlike the amount in MC Anniversary) and the black Cavendish is also a condiment. The air cured leaf, purportedly Mexican Burley, is exquisite in tying all the flavors together, and balances the blend as opposed to introducing a distinctly burley character.

I highly recommend putting a supply of this away, and allowing some air exchange from time to time. Magnificent stuff for an all day smoke. I have never been disappointed since it has been aged. Admittedly, the first time I tried it 'green' I found it essentially nothing more than hot acrid air. What a transformation !!

Cheers,

VC

From the bulk sample I received, the tobacco is ribbon cut and came a little on the moist side, but smoked well as is. The tin aroma is very sweet. I easily pick up on the black cavendish. The burley shines through as well, with a lot of earth and nuttiness. Of course the smoky Latakia is present, but isn’t overly powerful. I believe this has has a light topping applied that is adding to the sweetness.

Upon lighting, the Latakia is in the forefront. It’s smoky, woody, and fragrant. It is on the light side however. The Virginias add a hint of sweetness, a blade of grass, and undertones of citrus. The Burley is quite present in the blend, and is nutty with a good amount of earthy notes. The Cavendish adds adds brown sugar and sweetness, and mixed with the sweetness from the topping, drowns out the tobacco to a degree. The topping, whatever it may be, doesn’t add a lot of flavor, mostly just sweetness, as mentioned before. Overall, an uncomplicated, very sweet, and mild English blend.

English Luxury smoked cool and dry, but could get a bit nippy if puffed aggressively, so slow gentle puffs will win this race. It stayed lit well and required few relights, so there was no fuss keeping it going. The flavor is in between mild and medium and Nicotine is just a hair less than that. This would be a good all day smoke for someone wanting a light and sweet English. 2.5 out of 4 stars.

"Luxury" -- ha! Ok, this is not a "luxury" tobacco, its not a "medium' english, and its not connoisseur smoke. I have low confidence that the tobaccos are of any particular quality (although it lights and burns fine, if a little quickly).

BUT, its really not bad. Imagine if Lane 1Q had a love child with Squadron Leader -- that's a fairly close approximation. Not as aro as 1Q, fine, and it's mainly cavendish with a dash of latakia and maybe a hint of the other components. Definitely on the sweet side, but not cloying or fundamentally aromatic.

Honestly, there's something charming and nostalgic about this smoke. It smells like something your grandfather may have pulled out of a pouch and smoked while sitting on a porch somewhere. I'm going to keep some around for when I want to have a smoke and smile at a simple life. Oh, and the aroma is great.

I'm gonna say 2 stars. I can't "recommend" it all that highly -- its not special or fancy or particularly great -- but I also don't dislike it at all. It's cheap and charming in its way.

For someone new to pipes, this would probably be an amazing intro. For seasoned smokers, put a couple ounces in a jar and smoke it for a grin sometimes. Don't come in with inflated expectations, and you'll leave happier than you planned.

Notes from the Post-McClelland Visionquest: I think I've lowered anchor with a replacement for the lamented core Dark English 5110 of my 2017-2018 rotation in this Stokkebye offering. It's the little touch of sweet that lingers through an entire bowl, with a medium Latakia hit, and a pretty blend of Virginias, Cavendish, and burley layering out a creaminess I was missing in several C&D, H&H, Kramer's, Sutliffe, Gawith, and other candidates sampled and more or less enjoyed over the past year. And at a fantastic bargain price. Stays lit, smokes dry, pretty in the pouch, good quality control, very few stems, veins, twigs, compost. I'm loving this a lot.

Typical light to black English blend with a baggie scent of latakia and something sweet. Sweet isn't really a smell per se, but this one smelled sweet! Got an unexpected 1 oz sample from a friend and decided to smoke this without looking into it to see what it contained. I assumed it was a typical English mix.

Not that typical. First of all, there was a noticeable burley content, and the burley and latakia were about equals. The Virginia was well to the rear and didn't really establish itself with the usual adjectives. It was just sort of the base. I did not notice any orientals, but there was definitely a sweetening agent that I note is Cavendish. It's not exactly unflavored but it's close. Perhaps a bit of vanilla? Hard to tell. But as with most Stokkebye blends, I liked this one but it fell short of greatness. The sweetened burley flavor made it seem luxurious indeed, although I would not call this an American English, as it definitely had a British air about it, as the name implies. There was a bit of depth and complexity as well, but not to the equal of the finest latakia blends in existence. This was a good tasting, top to bottom coherent, well behaved English-with-a-twist and could be smoked all day long by folks who love sweet tobacco as well as those who love burley and latakia. I kept wondering what a little Drama leaf would do to this and I think I'm going to pick up more and experiment. A smoker who wanted to save some bucks and just wanted a good tasting no fuss tobacco would do well to scope out the Peter Stokkebye blends. And for those who fear Danish tobaccos, the ones I've smoked taste much more English!

English Luxury is an under-glorified blend, IMHO. This stuff is absolutely great. Packs and burns great. The Latakia in this blend is just sufficiently present, the nutty Burley makes itself known in every puff, smoothed out by the cavendish and somewhere in the background the Virginias give a very slight hay note. There's the slightest topping on this blend, something like brown sugar, which really adds to the experience. Rich, smoky sweet, and delicious. Medium strength, medium flavored, nicotine just below the medium mark, burns well. This blend is a great intro English, and good enough to satisfy experienced smokers as well. Top notch.

Out of the three Peter Stokkebye English's offerings (17, 52 and 306) at the moment, I think this one (17) is the boldest, focus on the Latakia, assisted by the Mexican Burley to construct the very base of this recipe, the Virginia (I don't see any bright one in my Mason's jar) and the black Cavendish are clearly on the backstage, very vague sweetness is showcasing in this mixture and you will get a hint of spiciness from the Orientals, just a hint, you have to pay attention to this and perhaps at most of the times it is unnoticeable! And frankly this mixture can't make your head spins but cautiously I suggest you have to put something in your stomach before you enjoy your well-prepared bowl, just my own opinion really, everyone's stomach is different if I'm honest! Its emphasis on the Latakia but it is not a Lat-Bomb!

This was my first real tobacco purchase years after the terrible Captain Black and Bugler, and right after the hot vanilla air of 1Q, fished out of a glass tobacco jar at a cigar shop. I was intrigued by the look, a mix of colors from bright straw to those matte black chunks of Latakia, the suggested quality of an English tobacco (via Denmark) and that smoky note. It was a revelation when I first put the match to it and let me know that pipe tobaccos could be varied and savory.

Looking back on it now, it is a very middle of the road English blend, which is not to denigrate the blend but to suggest it is balanced and a good choice for beginners. As an English, maybe better viewed as a Scotish style tobacco it smokes cool and pretty dry, even though the few times I've bought it it has been pretty moist. The primary flavor is the Latakia, not particularly smoky and definitely lacking the aromatic incense of some, but a nice leathery tone. I have to admit that all Latakias make me salivate a bit, literally speaking. It is a sweet English, probably a result of the Black Cavendish. The straight Virginias are pretty muted. There is some tang throughout leading me to believe that orientals are part of the blend even though unlisted. The sourness gets a little stronger in the last third and I would get distinct bursts of milk sugars right before it would gutter out, very much like Mackeson milk stout. Over time the Latakia has faded and benefits by a little addition.

All in all a good blend, one to be recommended without reservation but nothing to get too excited about. It is a nice steady smoke, a good introduction both to the style and piping in general, and pretty easy on the wallet.

Burns easily and is mild with the occasional harsh note.

I admit that I don't understand this genre, which is a sort of American mild pseudo aromatic with Latakia. It is unsophisticated and easy and doubtless has a market, particularly at its low price. Not for me however.

I mentioned on a pipe smoking forum I wanted to try some 'English' blends and was sent a sampler of seven with this in it. It was far and away the best of all of them. In fact it was one of the best tobacco's I've smoked to date. This is the tobacco that made me want to start cellaring tobacco's.

The only negative I had was the room note wasn't great, but it's not really supposed to be.

I have been smoking for almost four years. I am not a heavy, always got to have my pipe type smoker, and therefore am no expert. I have tried a variety of baccys from drug store, to bulk, to tins in a wide price range and have yet to find THE one. However, as of now, this is the one I have settled on. I don't think I have come close to finding the perfect baccy, but this one is good.

I do not like highly flavored weed (cherry, vanilla, etc) I just like tobacco. I would not like anything too strong, too weak, too hot, too cool, etc. I want something flavorful, but not overpowering. This is a good mix for that 'middle of the road' range. It is English, but it is somewhat 'soft' and even almost aromatic.

Best of all it is at least in my area easy to find and not very expensive.

Until I find Mr. Right Tobacco, or at least something better, this will coninue to be my mainstay.

While this baccy does not smoke hot or bite and leaves no bad taste or odor in the pipe or mouth, I can't find any redeeming quality that makes it desirable or a stand out. It packs OK and lights OK, but the smoking is extremely one dimensional, becomes quite harsh toward the end of the bowl, and lacks any real flavor that makes it likable. Also has a humectant added that makes it impossible to dry out to any appreciable degree. Will not become a staple in my lineup and will not be reordered. Also, would not recommend for newbies.

Very nice, light English blend. Minimal if no casing detected which may account for the slight harshness of the smoke. It's mild, flavoursome and pleasurable. It's reasonably complex and a nice blend of Cavendish, burly and latakia, leaving a nice smoky, earthy taste. Nicotine is minimal. It burns to a nice grey ash, packs and burns well and no bite. The room note is tolerable. Smoked in a Peterson Dublin 999. 3/5 stars

I like the balance on this American English mixture. A very consistent smoke from start to finish, the Latakia doesn't fade away towards the bottom of the bowl. Black Cavendish is not overwhelming and the burley has a very pleasant and subtle presence. Downside: tongue bite if not smoked very carefully.

Update: the flavoring has become too overwhelming for an English mixture. After this pouch, it's gone for good.

If i look forward to any tobacco then this is it..Seeing it being carefully weighed out from the jar in my specilaist tobacconist its all i can do to restrain myself from snatching a piece from the scales and filling my pipe. The quality is second to none and although a confirmed virginnia puffer this delicious blend is perhaps my favourite. It has a delicious fragrance something of fruit..ie rasins?..figs?..and on smelling a couple of days later what i can only describe as rose?. Its quite dry even at its freshest, certainly more so than say Marlin flake or old Gowrie but this in no way adversly effects its burning qualities. The aromas are judiciously applied and in no way overpower the natural tobaaco taste. It burns slowly with no tongue bite and has much complexity due to the variety of tobaccos which include Virginnia, Burley.black cavendish, etc..So this is a tobaccco that has a wonderfull aroma for the smoker yet none of the sickliness of some aromatics, and has all the flavour you will ever need. Without doubt a four star tobacco.

Pouch Aroma was very sweet due to the Cavendish. The aroma of Virginia and Latakia graces the nose yet promising a nice mild english blend.

Packs well. Flame hits Fruitness with a slight bitter choclate element, can feel the Latakia in the back of my throat, some depth and creaminess added by the burley. Maintained this throughouth the first 2/3 of the bowl. Became more fruity somewhat like a sour cherry flavored dark choclate kept in an oak cask towards the end as the Latakia became more noticiable and the burley tapered off.

Room Note: Smoked outside, people enjoyed it and a few commented that it smelled like sage.

A gift sample from a friend. Already aged 7 months in a jar. Lights and smokes well with the burleys nearly as present as the Latakia (definitely not a lat-bomb). I don’t detect any particular flavor (vanilla, etc) but agree with others that there is some added sweetness, either from casing or the black cavendish. Further down the bowl I taste more spiciness, perhaps cinnamon. Can’t be from Orientals as there are none. Maybe the Latakia? The Virginias are less noticeable at this point. It’s an easy-going English for sure: a nice smoke in the winter but light enough for warmer weather, if my sample lasts until then!

A solid 3-star English.

Smoking now:

Packs and lights fine. Smells sweet for an English. My understanding is this is topped with an sweetened topping.

Has a woody, grassy, earthy quality. The Latakia is in there but it’s very mild and isn’t a smokey herbal type of flavor but a mild earthy quality. Retrohale is pleasant. There is a mild sugary molasses sweetness to this which makes it rather nice. A mild and slightly sweet English blend. Does not bite or tingle the mouth. Something that you could smoke all day. It’s mild, smooth, and not too complex by design.

Burned dry, left a lingering but short smokey after taste in my mouth. Wasn’t unpleasant but it was there. All and all it’s not bad, nothing special but it hits the spot if you like that sweetened Latakia style blend. Very mild flavor. Something I can smoke at my local lounge all night with drinks.

PS English Luxury is a light English blend. The flavor starts out very mild and becomes a bit stronger as tobacco burns down.

At the start, the mildly smoky Latakia competes with the sugary cavendish for center stage, with the latter taking over by mid-bowl. The burley lends a nose-tingling spiciness at the beginning of the smoke and some notes of wood and leather towards the end. The Virginias are barely noticeable, offering some grassiness toward the end of the smoke.

I've rated it Recommended but, for experienced English smokers, it's probably more of a Somewhat Recommended blend.

Due to its mildness, English Luxury is a good morning smoke and would make a good introduction to Latakia blends.

It took me a while to get the quality of this blend. Usually, you smoke an English blend for the body, the heaviness. Here, at first, you encounter this light blend, with a very small concentration of Latakia - maybe too small. Too much Cavendish, I also read here, and those who said it were right. Maybe. It was an extremely hot day where I live, and I decided I want something light, and yet flavorful. I packed half a bowl, lit it up and gave it a go. Apparently, it’s a perfect blend for a hot day in the dessert. It’s light and fun, smokes rather cold, not high on nicotine. I believe it’ll also be a nice blend for beginners who want to try an English. It gives a hint of what Latakia tastes like and makes you want more.

This is a very mild 'English', and the Latakia is noticeable in every puff but it is never dominate. While the components often mesh together, sometimes the VA or the Orientals seem to be forward, while the Burley seems to be supporting the Latakia. Altogether, very pleasant. Fans of other mild English blends (Squadron Leader, Presbyterian, Germain's 1820) may wish to try this: it's not a 'match' for any of them, but falls into a similar category.

PS- Lux.English… First off, I personally view anything that attempts to over enhance the flavor/taste of my beloved Virginias or burleys blends unnecessary, and I smoke such blends, more or less as novelty or when I want change. When the flavor enhancer is a sweetener the blend is called an aromatic, where the enhancer is latakia it's called an English blend, same effect as I see it. For me, I personally prefer both enhancers kept to minimum, where they enhance the base tobaccos not bury them. Also IMO the latakia in this blend goes beyond the enhancement level, and is pretty much the major player in LE's taste and aroma. With that said, I do keep some LE on hand for those times when something different is called for, but if you prefer as I do, a dominant burly/Virginia taste and aroma, keep in mind that this tobacco (at least IMO) has a latakia dominant taste. Only somewhat recommended for those that prefer there tobacco blends more (USA) traditional.

2015 Update I have had a pound of this this stored in a jar that I partake from. It has been in the jar and aging over the years. I have smoked it again recently to compare it to the other english/lat blends I have been sampling. I still really like this blend, but think it is definitely more of a lighter english. The sweetness and flavors really open up around mid-bowl. The flavors are softer than other english blends, but still present and well balanced....age seems to have mellowed and married the flavors well. I still love it, but think there are other blends that are more flavorful, if that is what you are looking for. Black Mallory, Quiet Nights, Meridian, etc...

So far this and Black Mallory are my favorite English blends. I have many more to try, but have been quite impressed with this one. It has the Latakia saying 'hello' now and again, not as often as I would hope, but it is perfectly balanced with an earthy sweetness, not to mention that awesome nuttiness that I crave. I'll be ordering more soon!

UPDATE 3/2012 I love, love, love this blend. This is hands-down my favorite Latakia/English blend. It is fun and complex. It is sweet, tangy, smokey, rich, with a hint of bitter earthy notes. Now that I have tried several Latak./Eng. blends, this one has 'something' that the others don't (IMHO)...not sure how to put my finger on it but it rings my bell. It has a balance of bitter, sweet, tangy, and smokey that is just delicious to me. And it makes my pipes smell like cookie dough when I'm done (at least that's how I describe it).

I have discovered other English Latakia blends that I also love as much or more than this one, though this is still up in my top 3-5 blends. I know that 'something' that this blend has, it's the nuttiness....I think it's the burleys that provide this, but other blends have similar flavors and I love them.

Wow is the first word that came out of the mouth after firing this wonderful blend up in my meer. I have tried a couple from the Frog Morton series and this seems stronger in flavor and taste than either of them, which is definitely a good thing. I have been on the aromatic side of things for the most part and I see this as my jumping ship from the dark and wet/gooey side. Considering the price, this is one of the better English LIKE blends on the market. It is English like in that cavendish is added. However even with the addition of the Cavendish, this blend smokes and tastes more like an English than an aromatic. The tobacco's aroma is pleasant, burns cool with little bite, and tastes very much like a milder English with a hint of cavendish. It does not take the place of some of the lighter English blends I like, like Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe (EMP). However for the price one might find a place for this in the rotation.I give this a three star rating due to price and taste. Q

PS It is also good to try spiking it with a bit of latakia(for a a heavier English flavor) or Perique to ones taste.

These reviews are more for my own reference. I didn't find this blend varied too much in comparison with Nightcap and it didn't have such a sweet after taste like Squadron Leader. Just an average English blend.

This a lighter "English" stye blend. The Orientals are mostly prominent and the Latakia more in the background. There's a sweetness that probably comes from the Cavendish. That sweetness dissipates as the bowl goes down and the Latakia becomes more noticeable. Every thing keeps very tame and gentle.

This could easily be one of those blends you'd puff on all day long mindlessly but it will also suit a more reflective evening with more focus on the actual tobacco.

If I were more of a Latakia smoker, my cellar would probably see a big bag of it soon. Since I'm not, I like to keep my "English" moments more exceptional in quality. I'll stick to the few pounds of more special tins I own.

Back when I was still smoking bulk aromatics from the local tobacco shop, I chose this tobacco as my introduction to the English blend. Well, I liked it and haven't looked back since, soon moving on to quality English blends and increasingly, my beloved Virginias. Although I don't keep it around anymore, I still consider English Luxury to be a good smoke for the price. Unlike some of Stokkebye's other English offerings, the Latakia is balanced nicely against the Virginias and Burleys. The presence of cavendish also helps make this a very approachable blend for those looking to escape the rather one-dimensional world of aromatics. In that regard I would consider this a peer of Frog Morton - nothing compared to the Dunhills and Gawiths but an enjoyable smoke nonetheless.

Hmm. First thing that comes through here, are the burley and virginia's. I see quite a small portion of black leaf here, and considering it's also comprised of black cavendish, the latakia content is extremely light. It shows through in the smoke. I feel if the virginias were different, this would be enough to increase my rating by another level. The georgian variety of virginia must not do it for me in this blend. Not sweet. Not fruity.. not that delicious raisins and spice i associate with good virginia. Just cig tobacco. I agree with whoever mentioned this might be appropriate as a crossover english, especially a crossover blend for a cigarette gone piper. It's not bad, but far too bland for me.
