I took a 100g tin of this blend to my pipe club meeting a few months ago. About a dozen veteran puffers were excited to sample it for the first time; a pipe blend made of cigar leaf. They were not disappointed. Exceptional and unusual flavor here, and the consensus was that it would probably make for a fine,rich cigar if rolled up.

If you enjoy Dominican cigars and pipes filled with rich, ribbon cut Virginia, get the best of both worlds and try this one!

Whatever McClelland's has to offer has come up short in this blend. I don't like cigars as it is, but the least they could have done was add some good Virginia leaf, lord knows they have enough of it, as opposed to whatevet flat-tasting, orange detritis they chose as a base for Dominican Glory. I will say that there were a few times, though I don't know how I managed, that I woud get a whiff of that smokey Virginia tang that has keped me loyal to McClelland's for years. The two or three times that I experienced this, however were not enpugh to justify my having to pay for it.

The aged Dominican cigar leaf provides floralness, herbs, vegetation, leather, earth, cedar, wood, moderately creamy, light sourness, tangy citrus, light coffee, nuts, pepper, grass/hay, and cocoa as the lead component. The matured Virginia offers tart and tangy citrus, some tangy dried dark fruit, earth, wood, light bread and some grass as a secondary player. The strength and nic-hit are a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium. The taste almost reaches the medium mark. Won’t bite, but has plenty of rough edges, and a few harsh notes, particularly if you puff beyond a moderate rate. Burns clean and a tad warm at a reasonable pace with a very consistent, mildly creamy, tangy sweet, rugged cigar flavor that translates to the lingering after taste, and stronger room note. Lacks a little depth and body as well as sporting a light bitterness in the last quarter of the smoke. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires am average number of relights. Unless you are an experienced cigar smoker, I would not classify this as an all day smoke. Maybe not even if you are.

The word that kept coming to mind with this one is: soft.

There is a cigar influence in the flavor that is there, it's just that there isn't enough flavor for me.

It certainly did smoke cool though.

Room note approval rating from the wife was one of the lowest to date. (and she's a pipesmoker too)

I am wrestling with this one. I am finding it hard to review a pipe tobacco that smells like a cigar, tastes like a cigar, has the room note of a cigar, yet smokes in a pipe. And all of the above not a very good cigar.

It is an all brown rough cut tobacco, it is rather mild and non biting, but if I am going to smoke a cigar, I think I will smoke a cigar and a good one. If you favor low end cigars one might like this one. It has a cigar flavor as one might expect, it packs easy and burns easy in the pipe, it burns into cigar colored grey ash all the way down and rather dry so it has that going for it, I just did not really enjoy this blend in my pipe. I have had some good blends with cigar leaf in them and I did enjoy them, but I still felt that I was smoking a pipe, the cigar leaf added character and flavor to the blend. This just tastes like a low end cigar and leaves the room smelling like a cheap cigar. Thus I cannot rate this high either as a pipe blend or even as a decent cigar.

I mistakenly bought this Dominican Glory thinking I had ordered the Dominican Glory Maduro. Nonetheless, this is a pretty decent, mild smoking mixture with just the slightest “twang” from the cigar leaf. Had I not known from the description that this contained cigar leaf I would have thought that slight twang was from a pinch of Perique. Although I’ve enjoyed smoking this blend me thinks it misses its mark for its cigar-leaf tobacco genre/classification. As such, I think it’s only worthy of 3 stars. Otherwise, it’s really quite a mild & naturally delicious treat. Despite McC now going out of business I was able to procure a tin of the Dominican Glory Maduro which reportedly has more cigar leaf. Stay tuned for an upcoming review on that one.

Short choppy cuts of light chocolate with a very distinctive cigar aroma. But not a mouthwatering rich brown cigar like the color in the tin, but more like one of those green claros. But that's what the ad copy says and off I went. I'm not much of a cigar buff anymore but I do enjoy one on occasion.

Disastrous is the best word I can use for this. Perhaps that was due to my own misunderstanding but I was thinking this was going to be one of McClellands incomparable Virginias but with a cigar leaf overtone. Yes, there was Virginia tobacco in here but it tasted strictly bottom shelf. With the wealth of high quality Virginia in the McClellands vaults, I was surprised at how dull and flavorless this batch was. The cigar leaf tasted cigar-y to be sure but along with being mild was kind of harsh and King Edwardian ( as with their cigars, more paper than tobacco). It was all very cheap tasting and not refined like most McClelland blends. Up till now, Holiday Spirit was the only McC total failure in my book. I'd rather smoke an entire tin of that one than another single bowl of this. I made it thru only 4 bowls, with varying degrees of moisture content. Nothing saves this from a single star. Makes me definitely wary of the Maduro version and I may hold off on that one for awhile.

A McClelland disaster!

Another victory in missing the mark. A base of cigar leaf ribbon seasoned with small broken virginia flake with quite a lot of humicant added. Not much flavor comes through, smokes somewhat wet and the virginia flake is so moist that it effectively will not burn. I think I know what they are trying to do, cigar filler tobacco types are actually very bland and dry by nature. Anyone who has experimented with smoking cigar leaf in a pipe has found out. By adding a humicant it makes the cigar leaf more pliable to work with(from being to brittle) and to remove the "dry Bite." But the result is a blend of no refinement and lack of character. This really needs to be reconceptualized for it to be a worthy product.

What a disappointment Dominician Glory is!. I am a big cigar fan (yeah, I like little cigars, too) and thought that this might be ticket for those times when a quick cigar fix was in order.

Wrong!!!. This stuff seems to bring the worst of the two worlds together. The dominican is flat and bitter, w/o the compensating cigariness. The virginias seemed out of place and just adds a bite that good cigars never seem to have. Cigars are supposed to have a bitter edge but also very rich, full body that DG misses by a mile.

This blend reminds me of really cheap machine-rolled cigars of the drug-store variety. If that is your bent, then you may like this stuff. If, however, you like good hearty long-filler, hand-made Central American cigars, spend your money on those instead.

Oh, yeah, I can't believe that the maduro variety would be much of an improvement.

I picked up a 1994 tin of this at the CPCC show a few years back. I had yet to try the DG, but did try DGM a few years ago. I found those two to be quite different. My memories of DGM were that it was more a virginia presence than a cigar presence; whereas, I found the opposite with DG.

To me, DG is as close as I have experienced to a pipe that tasted like a cigar. I am not a heavy cigar smoker, but I do have a pretty full humidor, and will occassionally treat myself to one when the mood hits or conditions make a pipe unfeasable. They are mostly for guests who will say they wish they brought a cigar when they are watching me enjoy a pipe. lol

So my perceptions of a cigar is that they are very monotone and so is this blend. It has a cigar flavor that is slightly sweet from the virginia and it never waivers. It is good, but can get taxing in a large bowl. The tin note on this is very nice. It is not ketchup if this is an aversion. Like all McClelland's it is high quality and it performs wonderfully.

This is a hard one for me to rate. I was between two and three stars and decided to go with the two stars as I just don't see broad appeal. For a pipe blend it is kind of boring as it is really monotone, and although it is very similar to a cigar, I have feeling the cigar lovers would just prefer a cigar to this.

The Cigar leaf and Virginias are well noted and distinguished.

Good for People that enjoy non-aromatic pure and strong tobaccos.

Is related to Purple Cow, but in my personal oppinion, this is much better.

Dominican glory was a real snoozer for me. Nothing right or wrong with this blend, just boring. Lots of other great tobacco to reach for before this one.

The cigar thing really does not come through for me. I don't taste much cigar note at all. Didn't do much for me, but who knows, maybe it will be a favorite of yours?

As always the quality of product was excellent as McClelland has never disappointed. You may not like a particular blend but you can never complain about the superior craftsmanship.

Somewhat recommended.

the cut of this is long ribbons of red virginia mix with long strands of black leaves, and some bright virginia, my tin is stamp 041203 which means is 7 years old at the time of this review, it's easy to packed somewhat easy to light, the smell from the tin is of ketchup according to my wife, I don't mind at all, the flavor i got was very monochromatic, this is a very sweet virginia with the cigar leave weaving in and out but never taking center stage, the flavor never seems to varied smoke either slow or fast, it does seem to bite a little but only if pushed; there's nothing wrong with this blend but it just never seem to grab me. Maybe a little orientals or latakia may bring this mixture to another level.

IMHO this blend is under-rated. Not a complex smoke, but the cigar leaf is tasty and mild. If you like cigar tobacco, it is great for an AM bowl with your coffee. The VA is only slightly appreciated towards the bottom of the bowl. It lights easily and remains lit without much fuss... although I had to pack it a bit tight. It burns well to the bottom with not much left over but a grey ash,and no "gurgling". I look forward to trying the Dominican Glory Maduro next, as I would prefer a stronger cigar leaf presence, and since it is rated higher than the Dominican Glory (plain), I suspect I will also enjoy it.

I love a good cigar and I bought thinking that I would get a cigar taste in my pipe. Well, it wasn't there. That is not to say that I dislike this tobacco. This is a smooth, interesting, mild tobacco. It lights easily, stays lit, and has a nice smell. But if your expecting the taste of a cigar, this isn't it.

The only McClelland tobacco that I had smoked before this one was Christmas Cheer 2006 and I did not notice that McClelland Ketchup smell. When I opened this one... WOW... now I know what everyone means.

I recommend this tobacco for blending with other blends to cut their strength, such as Gawith's 1792. I usually start with a 50/50 cut. I smoke cigars, but seldom catch the taste of cigar leaf in this blend. Although the tin I am using was aged 5 years or better, I cannot smoke this blend by itself. It burns too hot. I've tried it in numerous well seasoned pipes and it starts out well with a nutty taste, but heats up without much effort and starts biting the tongue.

Great Stuff!!!!!!!! I have to agree. If you enjoy a good cheap mild cigar and drugstore pipe tobaccos this blend is your blend. This has the best of both worlds Cigars & Pipe Tobacco. " A mild blend with a pleasing aroma. If you like the smell of Tobacconist shops that is. This combination can not be beat.

When you get a Tin Open replace the plastic cap and start to smoke it in a week or two. This blend get much better and richer after opening. I like to add a pinch of Deer Tongue to it. There is a little aroma of sweet Virgina leaf and little sweet cigar smoke aroma. Man is this a ALL AMERICAN CLASSIC PIPE SMOKE. This is buy far the best cigar blend on the market. If you go back and forth between Cigars and a pipes this is also your blend. This blend is much milder and smoother then GL.Pease Robusto. which I find very harsh with to much oriental leaf in their blends as always. Redd

06/12/2005 If you crave a cigar smell and flavor in the bowl of a pipe here it is...If you want the smell and taste of a good cigar this is not it! Also it is cut like an American Aromatic which makes it burn way too fast. Might be o.k. if it came in a broken flake. 3/23/2006 I keep revisiting this blend hoping to make friends with it. Hasn't happened. I have lowered this rating to one star. Still looking for that blend with a bit of cigar flavor. This blend tastes like it has some paper ground up with it.

If one were to look at the can of Dominican Glory on the shelf at their local B&M they would just think it was a smaller can of Christmas Cheer also distributed by McClelland. But, this blend is something different all together. Upon opening the tin one is greeted with the usual McClelland ?ketchup? aroma. The odor surrounds your sense of smell and taste. However, if you transfer the contents of Dominican Glory from the tin to a jar, leave the jar open for about 1-3 hours, replace the lid and leave it, the ?ketchup? odor will not be near as strong. At first this seems to be a very pleasant blend, and if one were to inhale, it doesn?t choke even choke you as some latakia?s will. The tobacco lights without a problem and one never should have a problem keeping it lit. At about the middle of the bowl you really begin to get sick of this blend. The aroma it gives off is almost unnoticeable and there really isn?t any flavor in the whole bowl. One good thing about the blend is that if you want to really puff on your pipe, try Dominican Glory, because it almost never gets hot, and this reviewer never really noticed any tongue bight. For a person that smokes a cigar as well as a pipe this would be a good choice for them. If you are a cigar smoker, and want to look like a pipe smoker, go for it!! This is a tobacco that will not be in a rotation of mine at all. Five or six tins will be bought and left to age, perhaps a bowl once every 2 or 3 months; but, no more than that.

If this tobacco was aimed at cigar smokers that like mild dominican cigars - it's a hit ! Better than any crappy tinned cigar. However, I can't imagine a seasoned pipe smoker (whether he enjoys cigars or not) being impressed with this tobacco.

There's not enough to it to recommend. It's like a train that never gets to the station. I have tried this a number of times with the intention of finding out what I'm missing (and I often am happy that I bite my tongue-no pun intended and reserve judgement) but this is not an interesting tobacco IMO. It appears to be very mature wrapper leaf that doesn't have anything the complements it for depth. Of course my palate runs to stronger tobaccos so that's just my opinion.

This will be brief. I really like McC. blends, they are a mainstay for me. I first tried this and thought HMM, not bad. I guess it was the newness. Some will like this, but for me, keep cigar tobacco in a cigar and pipe tobacco in a pipe. To be fair, w/o the cigar leaf I think this would be a nice red VA blend. It seems familiar, I wonder.......

very mild, very easy on the pallet and a nice light taste in the mouth..this is a blend that works for me because i have a collection of 105 different blends and when im in the mood for something light this fits the bill...if i had a small collection i would not buy this blend..with all that said, this blend is a nice light experience..oh im a cigar smoker to and enjoy my one stogie a day from my very large cigar collection so this probably helps me enjoy this blend a bit

Having been very pleased with Robusto by G.L. Pease, I was looking for a blend with cigar leaf that was on the sweeter side (Robusto is a bit heavy on the Latakia). I was after that deep, dark tobacco taste that I find at the end of a bowl of MacBaren's Navy Flake, but stronger.

When I opened the tin, I was positively revolted by the aroma, which was like some kind of sour, spoiled food. My friends refused to touch it. And I waited until I was home, to try it in a pipe that I didn't mind ruining.

It did not ruin my pipe. Quite to the contrary. It gave a very satisfying, cool, sweet and remarkably well-balanced smoke that I thoroughly enjoyed. Once lit, the awful tin aroma dissipated and I was quite pleased with it. I did not find the cigar taste I was looking for, but this is a respectable, easy, smooth smoke that is neutral in both strength and flavor and therefore suits any mood or time of day. The room note will not win any awards, but will also not be disagreeable to anyone, and does not linger. I won't be keeping this in my humidor with my other tobaccos though, as I'm quite sure the incredibly sickening tin aroma is a danger to everything around it.

I enjoyed this greatly. I am one of those pipe smokers who will stick a cigar butt into my pipe and toke happily for the next hour or two as it simmers in my bowl. Doing so, of course, produces a sticky mess in your pipe and utterly fouls the breath while also knocking you on your ass. This is a much more subtle gentlemen's version of that experience.

Honestly, this added a bass note that I often feel pipe tobaccos lack - and as such I was inspired by this blend to begin adding cigar leaf to my own blends and have had great success from doing this.

My only request is for MORE cigar leaf!

McClelland's Dominicon Glory is a mild cigar blend that ages well. I am reviewing a can that is over four years old and it just as lovely as any other McClelland blend. If you are a McClelland fan do not hesitate to try their cigar blends for it taste much like any of their other Mature Virginia blends. I detect little to no cigar leaf flavoring for it marries perfectly with the Virginia's. Not an every day blend for me but a treat nonetheless.

This is a good mild tobacco. As for the cigar leaf in this blend I did notice it while smoking my pipe, but it is very subtle. If you want a strong cigar note to your smoke then this is not for you. However this is a good smoke none the less, and I do recommend you try it. I will be buying more of this blend.

I bought Dominican Glory with the memory of the old Balkan Sobranie Havana/Virginia mix in mind (how long ago was that?). When I tried Dominican Glory I was a little surprised that there wasn't more cigar flavor. But, that aside, I will keep this tobacco on hand for those times when something different from my beloved English type mixtures is required. I love the stuff.

I don't quite understand the poor reviews on this blend. Perhaps the name of the blend made people expect something other than what it is. I tried this blend in October 05' and the tin was dated Dec 04', so it had only a few months of aging. What I found was not a tobacco made to taste like cigars, but a tobacco made to taste good, and that is what McClelland accomplished with this blend. It doesn't have that strong, putid vinegar odor like most of their blends. It smells good and tastes good throughout the bowl. One tends to taste the virginia over anything else.

This is definitely one I'll be smoking on occasion.

Domincan Glory.05/03/07. I'll cut straight to the chase.If you are a lover of milder cigars,you'll most likely love Dominican Glory."I thoroughly enjoyed it" It reminded me of a very nice suttle cigar and easy to light,with a great mild taste to bowls end.Nothing overly done with this one,and it left a very nice clean greyish ash,with just a slight hint of moisture in the bottom of the bowl. Cigar lovers seeking a milder taste should most likely think it's very near perfect.

Personally, I love great cigars as well. So when a friend gave me a tin of this, aging since 1998, I had grand expectations. I guess I can only agree with many here who have said that if you thought you would get the taste and aroma of a fine cigar with this, you're in for some disappointment. After my initial letdown, I've tried to enjoy this simply as a pipe tobacco, forgetting the cigar talk. As such, it's pretty good. Not bad, not great. The aging of 8 years has made my tin pretty well lose the infamous McClelland "ketchup" like notes, always a good thing. But frankly, what I taste is just the Virginias, and a fairly mild serving of them at that. I have yet to find a pipe blend utilizing cigar leaf to really satisfy me. Maybe one day it will happen. Greg Pease comes a whole lot closer with his Robusto blend than this does. But still, it's obviously a pipe tobacco, not a bona fide cigar taste or arome. The person who first successfully combines the two will be my hero! Unfortunately, this isn't it.

Not a bad tobacco, but I was waiting for something fuller and more cigarish than this, reading the tin description. The typical McClelland ketchup saucing is present upon opening the tin, but it disappears quite quickly during the smoke. After having smoked P&W Churchill and Schurch Mogano, the cigar leaf into this McClelland seems pretty bland, too delicate, but it's a classic with dominican cigars too. The blend is mild, good as first bowl of the day, for sure it isn't an after-dinner.

This blend was surprising in several areas: 1. It did not have the usual McC "vinegar" tang. 2. It did not have much cigar flavor.

That being said, it was not a bad blend. The ribbon cut meant it was easy to load into any size pipe and easy to light. It took flame easily and remained quite cool under normal puffing rates. Neither can I say that it was a really good blend, as it was quite bland and uninteresting. The Virginias never bloomed with the sweetness I expected, nor did the cigar leaf make more than momentery appearences. I tried it in various size pipes, at differnt times of the day. At best, it has to be considered a "breakfast blend"; mild enough for all day, but not nearly interesting enough to smoke more than bowl.

I received my sample from Nightcap junkie who had tried almost all english, oriental, virginia and 'cigar' leaf tobaccos. Fortunately for me he does not like any of them so I get to smoke them.

My sample was neatly dated on the bottom of the can 10/15/97. Nicely aged so my opinion may differ from others. I personally do not like McClelland tobaccos. This one however I liked. This is not a complex tobacco by any means but virginias seem to blend nicely with ' cigar ' leaf. No tongue bite at all and weed is even tasting to the bottom of the bowl. No condensation but tobacco was bone dry probably from being stored in unsealed can.

Overall nice change of pace but probably not a daily smoke.

I?ve been an on-again-off-again pipe smoker for some time now but I?ve been a regular smoker of cigars for twenty years so I wanted to weight in on this blend as a cigar lover. I like this blend. The red Virginias dominate the blend and the cigar leaf is very light. I think this gives it a good balance because it is a pipe blend and not a cigar so the cigar leaf doesn?t overwhelm the Virginias. I like the taste of a good red Virginia anyway so I found this blend?s taste to be very satisfying and the room aroma excellent. I initially wanted to try the Maduro as that is the type of cigar I like to smoke but the company that sent this to me sent the wrong tin. Oh, well, the Maduro will have to wait for another time. I have the feeling that if I smoke this style of blend on a regular basis I will probably smoke the Maduro. If I enjoy the Maduro as much as I enjoyed this blend then this will definitely become a part of my regular rotation.

There is nothing bad about this blend. In fact, it is fairly enjoyable. It is hard to describe why it "misses." Like most cigar blends, this one tries to blend cigar and pipe tobaccos to get the best of both worlds. Those "worlds" clash more than integrate here. The cigar flavor is very light, and I would call it more of a condiment than a major element. I don't think that the cigar tobacco is that wonderful. Where it intersects with the pipe tobacco, there is a slight ashy-bitterness, which, while not offensive, does not make you want to smoke this for a long time. The flavor elements of the matured Virginias are somewhat obscured by the bitterness as well, producing a slightly muddled sense.

My advice: If you want a flavorful cigar/pipe blend, try Robert McConnell's "Pure Havana". If you want a pipe tobacco with cigar nuances, try Robert McConnell's Maduro. With those two blends available to me, I don't see the point in keeping MDG in my rotation.
