The Cyprian latakia is smoky, woody sweet and is a shade more than a team player. The Oriental/Turkish is woody with a little sweetness, and a very minor sour note that shows up every now and then. The Virginias are grassy, tangy sweet with a mild earthiness. The toasted Carolina is not that noticeable, but it does provide a slight nuttiness here and there. Has very little nicotine. No chance of bite or harsh spots. An all day smoke that burns well with a consistent flavor, some creaminess, and leaves a little moisture at the finish, but no dottle. A good place for the beginner and a nice change for the experienced smoker.

I thought this was based on John Cotton's #1 and #2 but I see now it's based on #1. I don't recall smoking that, but I did smoke a fair bit of the 1/2. Excellent blend, but too long ago to recall the details.

This is an interesting blend. It seems to be a standard latakia/orientals/virginia but it tastes sweeter, brighter and creamier than most "balkans". There was an underlying essence that I was quite familiar with, so I did some sampling. Indeed, this tasted to me as thought the latakia and orientals were housed on a bed of McClellands Royal Cajun Ebony. That same mild but full tasting, dark roast coffee essence pervaded this one, with the condiments on top. I'm not sure if the RCE is actually used, but it certainly tasted like it. It was one smooth character, never biting or offensive, with a sweet creaminess that would be a great place for newbies to balkans to start their journey. It's hard to imagine any balkan fan not enjoying this one, although it's not my personal favorite.

Someone asked if this were similar to McClellands Oriental #14. Based on my memory of that, I think he's correct, although I didn't have any for comparison. This is a 3.5 star blend, just narrowly missing what I consider greatness. Well worth a try for someone who likes their balkans sweet and mellow.

This is a much more laid back tobacco than the #1 version because unsweetened black Cavendish has been added to lighten up the taste while providing fullness and the throttle has been eased back a little on the Orientals. The Cavendish also sweetens--naturally--the mixture. If you are a latakia lover who wants a more delicate taste than Butera's Latakia #1, then you'll find it here.

This paricular blend combines the best of two worlds - Butera and McClelland.I love the Esoterica series and Pelican,both produced by Germain and Sons. I also greatly enjoy the Frog Morton OTT and Bombay Court,both produced by McClelland.Mr.Butera obviously only attaches his name and his high standards to the best blends available.I must make note there is a distinct difference between American English Blends and English blends from England ,this one falls into the former category, very much resembling Frog Morton Ott. There are many elements to this tobacco,but the one that is in the foreground is the Virgina.I was looking for a change from strict Latakia blends and found it in this.The Orientals are very pronounced ,the Latakia very subdued,and the Virginias dominant.If you like a flake but not he bite associated with it ,this might be something you should try.The blend is full in flavor with no bite at all.The latakia and orientals merely lend a helping hand to a strong virginia base.The result is a rich and slightly bitter(in a good way) flavor.THe aroma is heavenly and it burns very cool.There is no aftertaste and the room note is exquisite! A great after dinner smoke preferably in a large pipe. At least 1 full hour of unparalled pleasure.I give this 4.5 of 5 stars! (nothing is perfect, excvept perhaps Penzance!) Enjoy! P.S. It does have a certain Mclelland quality about it.

Do you like McC's Frog Morton ? Then you'll like this blend. It's been about 5 years since I last smoked FM, but I distantly remember a slight vanilla top note and RVL#2 also has it. The restrained use of Latakia, smoothness and flavor make both blends very comparable. Now , do I like this blend ? Once in awhile, as a change of pace, it's ok, but not as a steady diet . It's a little too mild, low in N and I'm really not into the Latakia/Vanilla combo. I won't buy again but I'm sure others will find this a very acceptable blend.

So Latakia lovers ever tried Butera’s Latakia # 2? I would think that if you are a Latakia-phile you likely should give it a go. First I was surprised to learn that it was blended by McClelland and I suppose that is not a handicap as I enjoy several of their tobaccos but marketed as Butera Royal Latakia No 2. ( I haven’t tried no 1).

Out of the tin this smells like dried wood with a nu-like background. As usual it is very dry, consisting of dark medium brown with a little orange thrown in for contrast which I would think is the Virginia content. They tell me the Latakia is Cyprian but they don’t say what the Turkish or Orientals are.

It lights on first strike and won’t stop burning till it is gone to a fine white powder. The taste is pure smoky but in no way strong at all. Therefore I really wouldn't call it a lat bomb by any means. I suppose the Virginia tobaccos soften the flavour but are not in the least traceable on the tongue. So we get smoky, smooth taste without the sweetness from Virginia's. The other puzzling content is the Turkish or “Oriental” (precisely what this is I don’t know) which in no way alters the Latakia dominance but is in no way over bearing. Sometimes Orientals can lead me down a bitter path but there is none of that present.

I would not call this anything but a medium strength, pleasant Latakia smoke without being the bomb everyone seems to fear. As you know I smoke outdoors so the room note is mute. There is no flavouring and no casing. Unlike many other blend these feature Latakia in a blend promoting that tobacco unlike the usual English blends that mask it with other featured tobaccos. I would call it a pure Latakia blend that opposes such blends as Nightcap and Penzance in a positive way. I don’t think lat-philes will be disappointed. It is a refreshing orient-less Latakia featured tobacco.

A great all day smoke.No bite & it burns like all quality tobac does. The Latakia is plentiful mingled in with the Virginias giving it a nice smooooooooth taste.The cut is ribbon for easy loading and no drying needed. No nicotine overload here but lots of flavor to carry you through to the next bowl. Now go smoke a bowl!!

I have heard that this blend was an attempt to duplicat the old John Cotton #1, and couldn't wait to try it. Actually, it came pretty close, but perhaps just a bit fuller than JC #1. It seemed to be a very close relative of Ashton Celebrated Sovereign, with Cyprian latakia instead of Syrian. In appearance, it is a well variegated blend of many colors, slightly finer than medium ribbon cut. The aroma was well balanced, with the latakia, turkish and virginia components all present. Lighting the tobacco continued the pleasant experience of visiting old friends. It was rich, smokey, spicy and sweet all at the same time. Complex and with lovely nuances that I expected from Butera after tryng Blended Flake, but did not find in Latakia #1.

You can very nearly classify this as a sweet English. The majority of the overall flavor is that of sweet Latakia. I do get a little Oriental woodiness to go with it. Pretty much nothing but sweetness from the Virginias. Not a bad smoke if you're a Lat fan. If you like the Frog, you should like this just fine.

Mild to medium in body. Medium in taste. No added flavoring, but some of the sweetness might be an addition. Burns very well.

This is a quite nice English blend with a decent smokes. The tin note is good, nice smokey smell followed with herb and spicy flavor. Easy to pack and nice burnt, is not difficult to maintain the light and i dont need much of relight to enjoy this one.

There is no strong flavor or taste that i can detect from this one. Just a smokey taste and little bit spiciness or herbs flavor that i usually found at oriental herbal market with little bit sweetness on the edge but not too strong. This blend is just a mild to medium taste which stronger taste come at the middle of the bowl. From cherring until the first part middle of the bowl i just got a mild taste without any strong kick of nicotine also.

I think this one almost similar with H&H ten to midnight but with a better cut and better taste. Recommended for daily smoke and for those whose love mild english blends.

A very nice English Tobacco. Opening the tin reveals a blend that is very much on the darker side with a relatively high moisture content. The aroma from the tin was pleasant for me as a smoker, smokey with a hint of being sweet. The relatively finer cut made for easy packing and there was no problem with lighting it which was a bit of a surprise given the higher moisture content it seems to have, at least to the touch.

The smoke itself was flavorful though not overly strongly so. The taste was in line the tin aroma, smokey and slightly sweet with a hint of nuttiness backing up the full tobacco flavor. Again given the full flavor and relative thickness of the smoke, I found it surprisingly mild on the tongue and mouth. The room note was as you would expect for an English, fine for me as a smoker but probably not appreciated as often by non-smokers.

Bottom Line - A very nice high quality English Blend, nice flavor and relatively thick smoke but not harsh at all, smokey/slightly sweet taste. Highly recommended as a mild mannered English but a bit on the expensive side for an all day smoke.

Excellent stuff, takes a match like nobody's business and stays lit all the way down. It's creamy naturally sweet and rich with voluminous smoke output. It does move down the bowl a bit quick a pensive pace reveals more, even with my enthusiastic puffing it never grew hot and Uncle Nic is very gentle which I appreciate.

Equally enjoyable to Latakia No.1; however, I do have a slight preference to the Basma in No.1.

I'll cellar a few tins of both, they're readily available and worthwhile.

Well that was certainly quite spicy! It was reminiscent of a maduro cigar. I certainly understand why so many smokers love Latakia. It was smokey without being overly so and I could detect a bit of virginia sweetness in the background. I would say this was a great way to start my foray into Latakias!

14 Sept 08 I have to update my review a bit, as I have tried several more English blends since this review. I do still like it quite a lot, but I think my tastes have shifted more toward the less sweet/more latakia heavy RVL#1. My recent purchases of this tobacco have been newer tins, marked 2007, and I can tell they're not nearly as good as the more aged 2005 tins I'd previously bought. I've mixed it with some RVL#1 at 50/50 proportions, and I like that quite a lot. I recommend trying this and the RVL#1, and try mixing them if you want something in between.

22 Feb 08 This is my first review on this site, and I hope I can add something useful here. I've only been smoking in earnest for about 10 months, but this is the tobacco I've smoked most, and I seem to like it best. I only have 2 pipes, and I certainly am no expert, so please bear that in mind. :)

I have tried the Latakia No. 1 as well, and I have to agree in general with PipeStud's characterization of this as a more delicate taste than No. 1; it seems to have more sweetness and a bit less Latakia.

I love the smell of this tobacco out of the tin. It reminds me of a smokey campfire, or perhaps barbeque. Seems to be a good moisture level upon first opening, perhaps a bit on the moist side. All the tins I've bought thus far have been stamped "302005". My understanding (not sure) is that 30 represents the blend, and 2005 is the year.

It has a mild to medium sweet flavor and a decent bit of Cyprian Latakia, and I have definitely grown to notice and enjoy the mild nutty flavor. This is a very smooth tasting smoke, to me.

My experiences seem a bit at odds with some of the other reviewers here. . .

I'm smoking a 2005 tin, opened in fall 2007. I have been impressed by the quality of the leaf and the blending. I also must say that this has a fantastic, latakia-rich aroma that I find absolutely delightful.

Where this disappoints is in terms of flavor. In short, there is none. I was shocked that a blend that could smell so wonderful could have so little impact on the tongue. . . almost like an aromatic that you endure just so other folks are happy. (Not that a latakia-rich aroma is going to make others all that happy. . . but you get the idea.)

I was so disappointed in the lack of flavor that I thought I might actually toss the remainder of my tin after three bowls. But I've never done that with a blend that was so well-made and that smelled so rich. So I continued. . . and I did find that the flavor improved slightly if you could dedicate a pipe to it. As another reviewer here has noted, this feels very much like a relative of Frog Morton; it just lacks the distinctive qualities that make the Frogs so interesting. More second cousin than sibling.

I would highly recommend this blend for new-to-English smokers or those who plan on smoking it all day. But if enjoying a pipe is something you do only once or twice a day, as is my situation, then I think you'll want something that can deliver more flavor along with the entrancing aroma.

Probably smoothest, best-balanced English I've tasted. It closely resembles Pelican, also from Butera, in that it gives special prominence to Orientals. But it has a bit more latakia and is bit earthier in taste. It's just exquisite blending, with some of the depth you normally associate with flakes in a ribbon cut. I still like Margate better but this is just superb stuff. Packs good nicotine, I might add, and you can't make it bite.

Similar to "American" Ashton english blends, you can clearly taste McClelland's hand into this. It isn't an english mixture in the classic sense, more of a modern evolution of the gender. I like the Germain's productions for Butera better.

Nothing to complain about and much to compliment, this is in the genre of the Frog Morton series. It is perhaps tastier than the original Frog, but not as complex as the latest Frogs with perique (which I do not smoke much anyhow). I have yet to review Ashton's two English blends for comparison.

This is unbelievably cool and winning. If one wanted to smoke absentmindedly, you can't go wrong here. Yet like the Frog series mentioned above, there is a ceiling that keeps the blend from reaching higher notes of flavor and complexity. Not quite muted, sooty or soapy- just controlled. Controlled has its place, particularly in crowds of non-smokers or when the tongue is fatigue.

I believe that some of the leaf is cased, perhaps the Orientals or Latakia specifically.

I do not spend much smoking time with the Frogs anymore, but enjoy them when I do. Royal Vintage Latakia #2 might replace them if I return to such friendly, unique territory. I would like to try RVL#1.

A lot of good things have already been said about this blend, but I'll too sing its praises. Yes, this is a McClelland based product, but with Mr. Butera's own particular brand of inspiration and polish. It's not as sweet and ketchupy as McC's, and it has all the elements in perfect balance, each introducing itself to you as you work down the bowl. Latakia provides the right amount of condimental spice, while the virginias gird it with a sweet, satisfying base. The turks add just the right hint of elegance and toasty enjoyment. When you take the fastidiousness of a master blender and partner him with a company that produces some of the world's finest blends, you get a tobacco match made in heaven. Very few things in tobacco or in life are perfect, but Butera Latakia No. 2 comes pretty darned close. A great blend!

Butera's Royal Vintage Latakia No. 2 happens to be my every day favourite smoke--like the steadfastness of a quiet wife and the excitement of a wild mistress all rolled into one. It is amazing--simply a brilliant weed worthy of a supreme hobbit's affection (one weed to rule them all). The balance here is truly a masterpiece. The tin calls this gem both "rich" and "soft" and that does not really make sense yet it is true. The amount of Latakia is just right and I can only think that the toasted Carolina in combination with it (and the other additions) is what makes this tobacco so bloody special. The smoking of this ribbon weed (nutty, creamy, smoky, and smooth) truly is both "original" and "distinctive". I highly recommend this, but leave enough for me because I do not know what I would do without it in my normal smoking routine.

After a surprise experience with a sample of a McClelland bulk English, and subsequent positive experiences with the Ashton English blends, I was looking forward to great things with this tobacco. Unfortunately, it didn?t seem to pan out that way. (I?m sure the majority of readers already know this, but just in case ? McClelland makes most Ashton Blends, and the Royal Vintage Butera Tobaccos among others) Latakia #2 is not a poor blend by any means, but I just didn?t get the same range of flavors that I did with the sample blend. (Wish I new which one!) I have an awful lot of McClelland produced English blends in the cellar, so I?m sure I'll get to one that blows my mind soon enough!

Aroma: Probably the best tin aroma for an English that I have experienced. Smoky sweet, and almost has the smell of an old tudor mansion. (Figure that one out.)

Visual: 80% Black and Dark Chocolate, with the lightest tobacco only reaching the caramel color spectrum. Short/wide ribbon cut, and ?thick? looking pieces.

Texture: Soft and maybe a bit on the moist side, which doesn?t bother me a bit. Interestingly enough, I pour all of my tobacco onto a piece of clean white paper before packing each pipe, and this left a seriously dirty mess when I would pour the excess back into the tin. ?!

Pack/Pipe: A little more difficult to get the proper pack than I would have expected from such a manageable cut. I would recommend packing with a bit firmer hand than usual. (I am a flake smoker, so this could have something to do with me tending to pack lightly).

Light: One match to char, one to send it on its way. Usually required two-three relights to finish off, which is a lot by my standards.

1st 3rd: Fantastic smoky flavor with not nearly as much sweetness as some of the McClelland English blends I?ve smoked. (ie: Ashton Old Dog). It has a taste that stays on the tongue. Kind of like lemonade. (The way it stays on the tongue, not the flavor!)

2nd 3rd: Actually gets a little less flavorful here, which is not my experience with most other tobaccos. Not bad, just a bit muted. (Could have something to do with the ?tongue? effect stated above). Often needed the first additional match here.

Final 3rd: Usually lost even more flavor here, and if I didn?t keep the ember rolling, lost a lot more. Very seldom smoked entirely to ash and bits, usually had a small amount of dry but not charred tobacco remaining.

Notes: Having the tin open for a while didn?t seem to affect this blend too much. A very consistent smoke.

I tried this blend because it is rumored to be a duplicate of one of my old favorites, John Cotton's #1 Mild. Although it is close, there are many subtle differences. Even though it is definitely not the old JC#1, this blend has become one of my current favorites.

This leaf comes in a round tin with an attractive label. Upon flipping up a ring and ripping off the top, the smoker is rewarded with a burst of raisiny-citrusy aroma, over a background of rich Latakia, Virginia, and Turkish tobaccos. The cut is a medium ribbon, with no stems or knots. You can easily make out the different components. The tobacco is loose and contains just the right amount of moisture. Although a snap-on plastic lid is provided to keep the tobacco fresh, I like to store the partially used tin in a Zip-Loc bag for extra protection.

Packing was easy in the larger bowls that I prefer. To give some extra springiness to the bowl, it helps to air out the leaf for five minutes or so before packing. The unlit tobacco has a tangy aroma which promises greater things to come.

The first match yields a rich billow of dense white smoke with a tangy, nutty taste and some citrus overtones. Level it off and apply another match, and the bowl burns clean to the bottom without additional relights. The ash is very light grey, fine, and loose.

Cruising down through the bowl, the taste is of a well-balanced English blend, although without the heavy nicotine hit of the Dunhill family. The smoke is creamy and cool, with definite weight and body. The smoke curling off the top of the bowl is sharp and crisp without being harsh. This is a great tobacco for blowing smoke rings. The flavor is full and rich without being overpowering, and definitely balanced. No single component of the blend stands out above the others. There is a distinct nutty taste as the bowl progresses past the half-way point.

Most of my smoking is done out of doors. This blend seems to expand in the still air, and achieve a satisfying fullness without seeming the least bit heavy or close.

Down near the bottom of the bowl, the smoke becomes a little dryer and thinner, and then, it is gone. Too bad, I always want more, but am satisfied for several hours.

If you like English blends that are rich and full without a large dose of nicotine, this is one you should try. Old John Cotton may be gone, but the aroma of this blend is close enough to awaken old pleasant memories.

This one tastes as if it were a first cousin or even sister to Ashton's Celebrated Sovereign. The diference between the two is that this blend is a little more restrained and therefore can be an all-day smoke. It is a little moist upon first opening the tin, so I leave it open for about ten to fiteen minutes before packing my pipe.It lights easily and smokes without a fuss, maybe one swipe through with a pipe-cleaner for excess moisture, but apart from that it has joined my daily rotation. I love the way this matures as you smoke to the bottom of the bowl with a earthy smokiness that you wish did not have to end. I recommend highly!!!

Opening the tin finds a wonderful full stringy English-cut blend. All componets in this blend can be detected in a complimentary way with each other. There is definitely a citrusy note that interplays off and on all the way down the bowl.

The blend easily packs and does not need a relight. It burns to a medium/fine gray white ash, without condensation in the heel at the end.

After my initial bowl or two I was not greatly impressed. Maybe I had rushed the experience. Now I find that several days have passed and when trying the blend again, I appreciate the subtle nuances to a far greater extent.

Just a really nice, smooth, what I would consider as an all-day smoke.

Nutty, sweet, and smoky, with a light citrusy underpinning to brighten it up, and quite a bit of spice dancing around in your mouth from the orientals. Just what you'd expect from the description. It's the same general strength as Dunhill Std Mixture Medium, only more complex, and doesn't have that pungent bitterness from the orientals like Std Mixture Medium. A very nice daily smoke.

i recieved a tin of this for christmas.boy was i glad i did.i fell for this tobacco right away.i have smoked a bunch of this tobacco,and i never get tired of it.it burns great,tastes great,and smells wonderful(i love it when i walk out of the room,and come back in,awesome aroma).the only negative thing about this tobacco is,it is`nt sold in bulk! man i wish they would sell it in bulk. this is a good quality english tobacco.i highly recommend this to anyone.just make sure you leave enough for me!
