Gold of Denmark, I am told, is a staple Mac Baren's blend that is one of their best sellers in both the USA and overseas. I was fortunate to be gifted a dozen Mac Baren's tobaccos recently and couldn't resist popping the lid on this one before all others. I guess the name, "Gold of Denmark," had me hooked.

No trouble to pop from the tin and load, Gold of Denmark offers a mellow, smooth and light smoking experience. It is somewhat rough at first, but settles into a quite enjoyable smoke. It is an aromatic that should crossover well. If you are a fan of Virginia leaf, Gold of Denmark may not deliver what you want - it certainly had more of a Burley taste to me.

I did not find this blend to be a hot burner at all and it did not goop up the pipe I reserve for aromatics. But then, most Mac Baren blends are cased to some extent and I've never had one of their offerings foul one of my pipes.

I now understand why Gold of Denmark is a hit among Mac Baren fans... It is certainly one of their best offerings.

I must admit that when I was given this blend, I expected your typical sweet Danish blend but I was pleasantly surprised. First, I have to say that I am a big MacBaren's fan, I have loved and smoked them for years but for some reason had never tried this one. I do not get the "bite" that many complain about with MacBaren tobaccos, I find them to be full, tasty, well balanced blends overall. This one is no exception. I really do think that those who complain that MB blends bite could smoke this one without an issue. Of course, smoke it too fast and you might get a bite, but I think that applies to most tobaccos.

This blend first of all, is a mix of dark to light ribbon cut tobaccos with a mix of cavendish, burley, and virginia. It has a lightly sweet pouch aroma, sweet but not overly so. It comes at a pretty good moisture content to just smoke without dryuing, but a little drying out and it becomes perfect. Now, to my surprise the burley gives this a little more full bodied smoke with the virginia adding some natural sweetness and the cavendish adding a slight aromatic almost honey like with a touch of vanilla flavor to it but not at all overwhelming or too sweet. It really is quite peasant to smoke and smoking a whole bowl runs through a gamut of flavors making it simple but also a little complex. Not a boring blend at all. It burns quite well requiring little relights, and it burns down to a steely colored ash without much if any residue in the bottom of the bowl. It does not gunk up your pipe, it smokes very clean. The room note on this one is very pleasant, and I found that while this blend is medium in stregnth and favor, it is very gentle on the tongue smoked in a normal cadence. I actually found this blend to be a pleasure to smoke and would make a great all day blend. After smoking it, I went and bought a good deal of it to cellar and have on hand. It has enough nicotime to satisfy but not enough to that it would spin your head or give anyone any problems. So, I give this blend overall the full 4 stars as I really find I enjoy smoking it and could not find anything to detract form it in any way. I highly recommend it and I think it will surprise many people.

It's a typical Danish confectionery product, but not overly sweet. Several grades of Virginia, rubbed out burley, black cavendish. Sort of halfway between Mixture, Golden Ambrosia and Black Ambrosia, both in appearance and taste.

Flavoring is sweet, candy-like, almost buttery, but not overwhelming: it still smells rather natural and it's not a sticky-goopy aromatic. A typically "average-tasting" product, made with good care, balance and quality leaf.

Personally I prefer this one to both Ambrosia blends: less cloying, more elegant. Usually it smokes great, very fragrant and biscuity, with good balance between the cavendish sweetness, the casing and the earthy notes of Burley. The smell is very "pipey". At times, though, it may turn out to be a little flat and watery, empty. Probably it depends on the pipe: it smokes best in medium bowls, not too large neither too small. Burning qualities are good: no tonguebite, a rather cool smoke, and a regular burning rate with little need for relights. It's only medium-light bodied, but still rather tasty.

I can't say I am raving about this blend, but it's enjoyable. Probably a touch less black cavendish and it would have been more suited to my taste. Pleasant blend: I won't buy another tin soon, but there's no reason why I shouldn't do it in future.

Rating should actually be two stars and a half, but there are no half stars ratings here...

I bought a pouch of this blend after reading on here that it had been discontinued. My online tobacconist had it listed, so I decided to get it, thinking it might be one of my last opportunities to try it.

Opening the pouch, it has the typical "fruit cake" kind of smell a lot of aromatics have. The tobacco felt pretty dry and rough to the touch. But not in a "stale" kind of way.

I'm on my 3rd bowl now, and so far it's always taken me two matches to get it lit. The starting flavor is light and pleasant.

The room note is OK, nothing remarkably good or bad.

I puff a lot and my tongue has suffered a little with this blend. It burns down to a grey-white ash without needing relights.

My first two bowls gave me a bit of a vitamin N buzz. (3rd one now too) It develops a chemical taste the further through the bowl I get. Gets a bit gurgly halfway through.

I like it, but it's not one I'd add to my regular rotation.

I would agree with everything Strong Irish wrote in his review. This mixture would make an excellent all-day blend. It is slightly sweet but it has a natural tobacco taste so it seems to have a minimum of additives. It smokes down to a dry gray ash with no bite. It isn't complex but it does have some subtle shifts in flavor as toward the end of the smoke. It's not one of my favorites but I'll likely keep a tin or two of it in my cellar.

This is a pleasant mixture. Burley, some VA and black CA marry well together in an aromatic, high quality smoke.

The casing reminds me of maple syrup or something similar. People always compliment me on the room note.

Easy to fill and easy to smoke, the taste will remind consistent throughout the bowl-slightly aromatic taste- that do not prevent the true tobacco taste to emerge all along.

With Honey and Chocolate, GOD remains my favorite aromatic smoke.

This easy going mixture is part of my regular rotation.

Gold of Denmark is a high quality tobacco topped with aromas of dried fruits and what reminds me of French toast with some maple syrup.

The tin I opened was marked "June 08" and revealed a loose cut mixture composed of various leaves ranging from golden to dark brown completed with some black cavendish.

Filling the pipe was quite easy as well as the lighting up. The tobacco burned consistently well and taste included also some pure tobacco taste and nuttiness from the Burleys. My tongue was only sparsely tickled throughout the bowl. The tobacco burned dry until the last bit.

I find this mixture to offer more nicotine than Larsen's 1864 and Stanwell's vanilla which is an advantage for my liking.

As with every McBaren's offering, taking your time and filling in the bowl properly - i.e. well packed- will ensure a pleasant venture and relaxing moment.

My adorable wife loved the room aroma and never asked me to take a break from smoking.

Gold of Denmark is ideal for whomever would like to try a high quality light aromatic mixture that does not sacrifice the tobacco taste and also includes a minimal level of nicotine to make it a very satisfying smoke.

Upon opening a tin of Gold of Denmark, I was pleasantly surprised by the smell of fruits, nuts, and honey. A very sweet smelling blend overall. When I smoked it, I did not encounter much tongue bite, but the bowl does tend to get a bit hot. Drying out the tobacco prior to smoking would certainly take care of the problem, or just settle for a very slow smoke.

However, what made me fall in love with this delicious smelling blend, was the aftertaste. There was no distasteful aftertaste, if you will. My mouth tasted like a very mellow nutty flavor for the rest of the evening, and I did not mind one bit. Furthermore, the blend was delicious to taste when smoked. I highly recommend it to anyone who does not mind taking the time to either dry out the tobacco prior to smoking, or who would rather smoke very carefully and slowly. Delicious!

This tobacco was a Christmas gift. I don't usually purchase Danish blends as I have come to find them very much alike. This was no different. It started out mild with a pleasant taste and good room note. The nicotine strength was average and the flavor was like sweet raisins-actually quite pleasant. It burned evenly but about half way through it started to bite and the flavor began to disappear. Perhaps I was smoking it too fast. Whatever, this is a nice tobacco-somewhat ho hum but that has been my experience with any Danish I have tried. Nonetheless,I would recommend it for a change of pace.

Tongue bite, tongue bite, tongue bite! Too much flavoring in this tobacco, right from the start, it bit my tongue.

Too bad, this tobacco was darker than Plum Cake or Scottish Mixture, with a great aroma, but boy! did my tongue ever get it!

My regular "tabak". Smoked in the study, after dinner. Gold in a tin. A pleasent aromatic rise from the tin when opened, a nice room note when smoked. Packs nicely, also freesh it might be a tad moist. Not for smoking-just easily packed to tight. Very easy smoke. One relight at the most. It seems important, to fully enjoy this tobbacco to reserve a pipe for it (I dedicated three).

Well worth its price.

A fresh tin of this was nothing special to my tastes. The tobacco looks great and has the perfect (typical) Mac B cut that loads into every pipe with no problem. It's about 80% black cavendish and is very wet. I like many of the Mac B blends and consider them to be my favorite blender- for the quality of tobacco and a restrained hand in adding casings. This blows the rest of their blends out of the water! I think they had a contest with Lanes to see who could use more casings and PG. The tin aroma is definately fruity and leaning toward cherry and the room aroma is about the same. It needed a bunch of re-lights from a fresh tin and burned down to a wet dottle.

I let the tin sit for awhile to dry out. I've been smoking this same tin for about a year now and it does get better, even with the heavy casing. It's much drier now to the touch and there's no re-lighting problem. The aroma in the tin has lessened and no longer smells like cherries. There's just a faint hint of something sweet. In short, it's not worth the trouble. A tin of Mixture is better and ready to go when it's cracked. I'll finish the tin in another year or so, but won't buy it again.

Upon opening the tin, the aroma, for me, is sweet and offers strong hints of figs. The tobacco is mostly black & dark brown in color which is not what I expected. There is very little light or golden brown tobacco in the mix. The tobacco is too moist for my taste, so I took out a few bowls worth and let it dry out for a few hours. This tobacco seems a little difficult to pack properly and I can't figure out why. I also had a hard time keeping this lit, probably packing it a bit too tight. The flavor is on the sweet side but not as much as I would like, with respect to the virginias. There seems to be too much Cavendish and Burley in the mix. Probably neither one in itself but combined they tend to over power the virginias. I've only smoked five bowls so far but this doesn't seem to be anything special. I've smoked drug store blends that were as good and for 1/3 the price.

A very mild and flavorful smoke. You can get a bite if you rush. If this were the only tobacco in the world, no one would complain, but given all of the flavor and variety out there, this one is a little bland. I might buy it again sometime, but I just consider this to be "generic" pipe tobacco. The room note may be the best part. It got great reviews from the gallery.

I let this air out for 8 hours. Lit on one match and needed no further lights. Burned dry, but with a fair amount of black residue. Lots of clouds of smoke. I found the Scottish mixture to be more aromatic while smoking than this one, though it was more aromatic in the tin than McB Scottish mixture. Go figure. Heated up my smooth thick Cavicchi Dublin quite a bit. Perhaps a sandblasted pipe would be a better choice for this kind of heat. After smoking McB Scottish and Gold on the same day, I preferred the Scottish which had more graham aroma while smoking. The Scottish had quite a bit more nicotine than Gold as well.

Hello all, I received this as a gift from a friend, I'm impressed by his selection since he doesn't smoke. Upon opening the tin the aroma was sweet and figgy, but not too sugary like others I've smoked in the past. Nice round smell, matured with hints of bran or oats. I could definitely detect the Cavendish and the casing, but could also picked out the high notes from the VA. It packed quite well without becoming knotted after a little rubbing and fluffing. The tin I got was not too moist at all, no need to dry it out at all for me. Nice burn, I charred twice because the first match went out too soon, and then lit up for the rest of the bowl without any need for relight. I was little too eager to try it out I guess and it got a little hot, but I jut ashed it, tamped it and left it for a bit. The first third was fair, I enjoyed the nice room note, which was actually unique from many other aromatics I've had, nice little surprise. In the next third it really started to come into it's own, the casing stayed way back and the sweet VA and steady burley came forward. It had virtually the same high notes from the VA as in the tin, and I also noticed that the same nutty, bran taste that I liked in the tin came forward with the burley. Only minus at this point I noticed was not a whole lot of smoke volume, something I'm partial to. The last third burnt right down to the bottom, but was a little ashy and flat. Nicely balanced overall with a mild effect. As soon as I get yet another pipe I'll smoke this more often as my go-to aromatic. happy smoking!

IMHO Golden of Denmark is a "bridge" between the classic Scottish Mixture and a more aromatic one of the likes of Black Ambrosia. Just a light aromatic.

It came from Amsterdam (not sold in Italy) in a 100grms black tin.

Smelling blind at the tin opening, mild notes of fruits and nuts, honey and some spirit topping I cannot identify. A very gentle and balanced, non-agressive tin aroma. The weed is medium ribbon, a fine-looking contrasted colour of the like of some full-english mix. Just opened GoD was bit wet, after two months unsealed it's just right.

A wide bowl Castello KKKK has been used. Tobacco chars and burns regularly, releasing a mellow smoke with a faintly acidic/fruity note to the tongue, while to the nose the nuts prevail. The strength never exceeds the mild side.

Pay attention and don't force the draws in any way, otherwise it will get hot and steamy. Fortunately my Castello has thick walls... and I'm getting more and more accustomed with McB.

High quality tobacco, no doubt. If an aromatic of McB is my choice, then Black Ambrosia fits better my sweet tooth.

This is a Mac baren burley based mixture with some Virginia/Cavendish and some light honey touch, the tin aroma is honey/chocolate/dried fruits, the smoke is semi sweet nutty burley with hint of chocolate and honey.

This is not a heavy aromatic tobacco, very similar to Golden Blend with some black Cavendish and dried fruits note, the smoke is not very sweet, it taste and smell good with the typical Mac Baren flavor and room note and without artificial flavoring.

This and Navy Flake are my favorites of Mac Baren burley blend, I smoke it frequently since few years and I am quite happy with it.

I think I finally figured out this tobacco. At first, I smoked this stuff right from the tin and it bit like a crocodile. It was hot, steamy, goopy...everything I seek to avoid.

I thought I would give it one last try, but have it dry out overnight. Am I glad I did.

Gold of Denmark, when dried, is not bitey at all. It is an aromatic Danish blend that combines a light fruity flavor with the familiar MacBaren honey-toast. When I feel like an aromatic smoke, I reach for this.

Due to the overnight drying requirement, I cannot give this top ratings. But I do recommend this to those seeking a more subtle type of Danish aromatic.

I ignore if there are several presentations for this weed as I noticed that one of the reviewers mentions opening a tin. I was given a polyethene pouch not unlike any other "drugstore" $5 blend. First time I tried it I almost cursed the guy who presented me this... I was overly humid, bathed in PG and cased in a vanilla/honey sauce that tasted anything but tobacco. It had all the qualities of an acethylene torch and scorched my tongue even tho I took extreme care to smoke it as slow as I could while keeping the pipe lit.

Since I believe that everything on earth has something positive, the best I can say about this is that I got it for free. I dumped it on my tobacco cabinet considering that it might camouflage the room note of some of my more aggressive blends. Today I decided to give it a second chance. As of now the tobacco is quite dry, although still pliable. It lighted fine on the first try and much of the overwhelming casing was gone, or at least subdued. It is still a hot weed, it demands to be smoked extremely slow, letting the pipe rest for long lapses; still, it's quite hard to keep the bowl cool. The room note is now less overwhelming and the taste of the last third of the bowl is almost pleasant. However, the Burley and Cavendish overwhelm the Virginia, granting there may be any. Its taste is acid, somewhat reminiscent of licorice. The aroma is heavy with vanilla.

Summing up, I cannot recommend it for any occasion. If you must have an aromatic, look elsewhere.

A balanced mixture of pressed virginias, burley and much black cavendish results in a good all day choice. Slightly sweet aroma and taste that remains uniform thru the smoke that burns to an even ash. I found the taste similar to other Mac Baren blends with this tobacco mix and therefore not unique. I'd prefer this one since it's not so heavy with burley and I normally favor virginia flakes. It took me a while to master the packing technique which resulted in frequent relights when the tobacco was moist just after opening the tin. However, not a wet smoke especially with some drying. No bite if you smoke it slowly and certainly much better than any drug store blend. An enjoyable change for me.
