Faintly reminiscent of Lane's 1Q or RLP-6 aromatic offerings, yet in a class all its own. Upon first lighting up Ole Shenandoah, your initial surprise will be the complete lack of tongue bite; this holds true consistently throughout the bowl, as this tobacco has the least tongue bite of any any aromatic going. This blend packs easily, lights readily, and simply refuses to go out. It burns completely to a fine, white ash, leaving minimal dottle to contend with in the bottom of the bowl. How is it for taste? Imagine a blend of warm butter with just a hint of vanilla and honey, then add sweet nutty overtones to round out the flavor. After the bowl is done, expect a pleasant lingering sensation on your palate with no bitterness at all. Mild enough to be an all-day smoke.

The burleys are nutty, earthy and toasty with a little molasses as the most obvious component. The black cavendish offers a little sugar in a small support role.The cocoa, brown sugar and vanilla toppings cover up much of aspects of the tobaccos, while the honey and nuts are a little less noticeable. The taste level is a step past the center of mild to medium. Has little nicotine. Burns clean and cool with no bite at a reasonable pace, and leaves just a little moisture in the bowl. Needs an average number of relights. Has a pleasant after taste. An all day smoke.

I'm on my second tin of 76 and, thus far, am well satisfied with this blend. It has a pleasant tin aroma which is a combination of raisins and brown sugar. When I read this was a Lane product, I was skeptical that 76 would be a sticky, overly flavored tobacco that left dottle and would not burn or burned too hot....happy to report, I was wrong. 76 has just the right amount of moisture, packs great, lights easily, burns fairly cool and stays lit. It requires little attention and produces a heavy, thick smoke with a sweet room note. This is easily and all day smoke that will leave you hands free to perform other tasks. You can sit your pipe down and come back after a minute and it's still there, ready to go. I would have to say, this is fast becoming my favorite aromatic.....

It's been a while since I've put a mild aromatic into my pipe, and I have to admit my palate is a bit out of practice. My first impression is a sweet flavor with hints of cinnamon or nutmeg, as though I caught the gingerbread man and shoved him into my pipe.
I should have read the other reviews before opening the tin, since this is clearly not a summer smoke. While the smoke itself is very mild, every element hints at winter, fireplaces, warm blankets, and carolers. All things inappropriate for 80 degree weather in June. I closed the tin and labeled it, "Do not open until Christmas." When the yuletide comes around, I may be able to give this tobacco the review it deserves.

A great aromatic, all things considered. The first thing that entered my mind after lighting the first bowl, was Boswells Christmas Cookie. I immediately questioned whether this was simply because I smoked a fair bit of CC through this pipe prior to this. I then packed another bowl in a different pipe. Yup, still Christmas Cookie. There is a slight difference, but it is marginal. It honestly seems as if someone attempted to copy J.M. Boswells recipe and got it about 85% correct. I still favor the "original", but for those not local to Boswells this would present a good budget minded substitute. Lot's of sweet notes of vanilla, a bit of chocolate here and there, and a touch of liquor, maybe rum.
Overall, I would consider this likely the best tinned aromatic I've had. At the price I paid for it, about $4.50 a tin, my only regret is not buying 8-10 of them.

I purchased a few tins of this because it sounded like it was worth a try and the price was right. Overall it's not bad, has a pretty good choc/vanilla flavor that lasts through to the end. It burns good right out of the tin without drying. Its mild on the nicotine so enjoy a big bowl if you wish. Not really any doddle at the bottom at all, doesn't gunk up your pipe and most importantly no bite! This is a great aro for someone starting out for sure, and an all day smoke for the more experienced.

Ah yes. Tobacco sales chicanery at it’s best. This is actually Scotty’s Butternut Burley re-named and tinned. Even the description is the same word for word. See my review on that blend for details.

This blend was fairly new to me. It had a nice aroma when opening the tin. Very little moisture and was just about right. Easy to pack and stayed lite after the first charring light. I packed a good sized bowl and it burned evenly through the entire bowl with no dottle in the bottom. Produced a nice rich thick smoke. A nice blend of Burley and Cavendish with no bite. Reminds me somewhat of Sutliff Molto Dolce but in a milder form when smoked. Would be a great starter blend for someone new to pipe smoking. Plan to smoke it regularly. Also thought it was reasonably priced.

Ole Shenandoah. Hmm.
The reviews I read about this tobacco were off the charts! Rave, rave, rave. Sounds awesome. And I'm not snooty. I like English, Balkan, Aromatics and plain ole smokes too. So I thought, "hey! I'll try this one...and since it's on sale, I'll grab 15 tins!" Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking, but I thought it and the compulsive person in me left the train station without me.
So there I was now waiting to get my hands on this tin. They arrived. I finally got around to opening one about a month later. Sort of smelled pleasant in the tin. It had the vanilla scent, but maybe I expected a bit more of it. But that's OK too. Then I packed and smoke it. Hmm. Not a lot of vanilla flavor. Not a lot of tobacco flavor. What the heck did I just smoke? Was the cob pipe funky? I got zilch out of it by way of flavor. But I figured it was just an off day. Then about a week later, I took the tin out for a round of golf. I figure, it would be pleasant enough to smoke around others and this is supposed to be a great winner, so let's take it. Again, zilch. Not much to it. I smoked it. I had it with me and I continued to smoke it, but it wasn't satisfying. In fact, I was starting to think what I was going to be able to do with the other 14 tins!
The folks around me though did like the smell of it, but I had to ask them if they did. Sometimes when smoking a pipe on the course, folks will edge closer to smell the smoke and comment about how they like this or that or how it might remind them of someone. But they did like the scent here, so there was that.
So I came back, popped it all into a pint jar and said forget about it. Done with this stuff. But a couple of months later, curiosity got the better of me and I opened up the jar to catch a whiff. It smelled better. Fuller. It smelled like it had smoothed and grown into itself. Here's to a new bowl of it and to giving it another chance. I packed it up and lit it up. It was indeed smoother and fuller in flavor! The vanilla was coming through and the tobacco tasted richer. Nothing to write lasting songs about, but it was tasty and smooth. It also gave me hope for the remaining 14 tins!
No nicotine hit to speak of. No bite either. It was a smooth smoke and alright in its own right. If continued cellaring brings out the remaining flavors in the tobacco, both from the leaves themselves and the marrying of the flavors, then this could be raised to 3 stars.

I had fun tasting all of the Ole Shenandoa blends (easily gotten at pipesandcigars.com). They have great tin art and really nicely put together aromatics with crisp, tobacco taste, yet with aromatic agents that are not too sweet.

This blend is nicely done. It is balanced well with and even draw of sweet tones and the subtle hints of chocolate and sugar (but not too forward for me). Vanilla sweetens and evens this out nicely. It was a pleasant smoke from beginning to end and had consistency throughout. Wasn't goopy nor did it burn too hot. A nicely done aromatic with no real downfall. Smoked great in every type of pipe I threw at it. Nice room note. A great evening smoke when hanging out with the family. Wouldn't mind having a tin or two around on reserve. Not a one and done for me. Not too complex, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Lit this up for the first time while working in my cold home office on a snowy day. I opened the tin and found a pleasant vanilla scent. It had just enough moisture, not at all wet out goopy. The tobacco burn easily to a nice white ash. Unlike so many other vanilla-based aro's there was no bite at all. Taste was consistant to the end. Overall a very comforting smoke

From the tin it’s fairly wet and a little goopy, and is ribbon cut. The aroma is as the description says. It is buttery, nutty, with vanilla and honey. Hints of chocolate and a fruity sherry or brandy topping is also present.
It smokes like the aroma. Buttery, nutty, vanilla, honey, with a hint of chocolate. I also notice some caramel and the brandy topping. The Burley is a little nutty with some molasses. Cavendish adds a light touch of brown sugar.
The descriptions says no bite and that is true. Absolutely no bite and smoked very cool. Required virtually no relights. It smoked dry but did leave some moisture in the bowl. Very little nicotine, and in combination of the zero bite, could be smoked all day without pause. 3 out of 4 stars.

Note: I have read that this is identical to Scotty’s Butternut Burley. They also share the same description. I find them to be identical with a few small differences. Scotty’s Butternut Burley has a touch more honey and the sherry/brandy note a little stronger, as well as the toppings being an shade more pronounced and distinguishable. That being said it would be difficult to tell the two apart if blindfolded. They both have the same review notes, so I am using this note to distinguish the two. Barrel No. 76 gets 3 stars, Butternut Burley receives 3.25.

It's Butternut Burley in a tin. Y'all do realize this, right? There's a lot of chicanery in pipe tobacco marketing and this is as good of an example as anything.

A solid vanilla aromatic
The best thing about this blend is the smoothness of the smoke. It was the first pipe tobacco that I tried (along with Dunhill EMP) and there was no bite to be found.
The second best part is the topping, which is dominated by vanilla, maybe brown sugar, and hints of chocolate.
Finally, the tobacco itself is flavorful and is composed mostly of burley, black cavendish, and some Virginia leaf, which remain discernible even with the topping.
It is good but not quite perfection.

A decent smoke in a sea of a chocolate and vanilla aromatic blends.
The chocolate and vanilla topping is strong but pleasant. The chocolate plays well with the nuttiness of the burley, which I feel is at the forefront of the blend. The cavendish adds some richness to the blend. The smoke is smooth and flavorful, but I find this flavor profile in numerous similar blends, such as Captain Black Regular, Mac Baren 7 Seas Regular, etc. What sets Barrel No. 76 apart is the predominance and quality of the burley in the blend. It is quite tasty.
I finished a tin with some age to it, though I forgot to check the specific date.

Not sure why I have these Ole Shenandoah blends floating about, since the last one I smoked was terrible. Sadly this cousin was also inbred. The tin aroma has a gross, hospital smelling, musty sour affair going on. Who knows what the smell is trying to accomplish here, maybe some type of ol' timey tobacconist angle?
The stuff is generously topped and fairly moist out the gates. Not a huge problem as it let well enough. The lit flavor added some sweetness, yet it still did not impress me in the least. It wasn't as gross as the initial smell, it was just very boring; like smoking empty calories without tasting the desert you know isn't good for you.
The last Ole Shenandoah was down right gross. Barrel No. 76 isn't much better, but was at least tolerable as a bland smoker, so I decided to give it a weak two stars in deference to others with a different flavor palette.

Ole Shenandoah is great for an aromatic. It isn't a wet, hot mess like most are. Smokes cool, leaves only ash and actually holds its flavor throughout. There is something besides vanilla in the taste that I can't quite make out. Ginger? Nutmeg? Whatever it is, it peaks out from behind the vanilla on occasion and gives you another flavor to taste. Very nice.

I was happy to see that the tin scent of Cocoa, Raisins, and Vanilla all carried over in the smoke as well. Reminds me a lot of Christmas Cookie from Boswell, as the combination of all the scents and flavors is absolutely scrumptious. Overall a very pleasant smoke that put up no fuss and burned cool.

I rate this blend 7 out of 10. One thing I have learned from reading reviews on this site is that tobacco tastes are very subjective and just because a lot of other people like a blend does not necessarily mean it will be one that I personally enjoy...so for that reason I encourage you to please take my reviews and ratings with a grain of salt. That being said, Barrel No 76 is definitely worth a try!
It is a mild and pleasant aromatic. I enjoyed the flavor and didn't experience any sort of tongue bite or any of the unpleasant chemical taste (or aftertaste) that I absolutely DETEST in pipe tobaccos. It was a little wet when I first got it but dried a bit and mellowed after sitting in the tin for a few months.
I am not a reviewer with such a sophisticated palate that I can pick out for you all the different nuances and flavors that I got out of this tobacco, I am just an average guy who enjoyed smoking this blend. It's pretty mild (which I like) and does a good job of blending the sweetness of flavor and aroma with the natural flavor of the tobacco. I can attest that there aren't any overpowering flavors or fruit notes or anything like that.
My overall favorite aromatic tobacco right now is Lane BCA which is similar to this blend but, in my opinion, much better. Another one that I favor over Barrel No 76 is Peter Stokkebye Dansk Black which is also an excellent blend and was my previous favorite before I found BCA.

Not bad! I purchased this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. A very mild casing gives the tobacco the center stage. Great for the price. I have reordered once and plan to cellar the next tin. I'll update when it has aged. Not going into a regular rotation, but will revisit, often.
