The base of the blend is the citrusy, grassy/hay-like Virginias. Playing an able supporting role is the toasted, nutty burley, which also has a little earth and minor molasses. Every so often, it competes with the Virginia. The smoky, woody, medium spicy dry tasting Orientals are an obvious underscoring background player. The nic-hit is mild. Won’t bite, but I recommend a slow puffing cadence because it’s a thin ribbon cut, and smoking it fast will create a cigarette note or two along with a little harshness. Requires few relights, and leaves almost no moisture in the bowl. Has a pleasant after taste. An all day smoke if you wish it so. More of a two and a half star blend.

Newminster - No. 80 Norway Pipe Cut.

An even-cut, medium brown, ribbon. Straight up, there's no chunky broken flakes or tiny shag pieces in the blend. I detect no added flavour from the pouch's aroma, it just smells pure.

Of the tobaccos' I get the most alacrity from the Burley and the Virginia, the Burley more-so. At the start of a bowl it's an even split, but as it burns down the nuttiness gets stronger. I get no bite from No. 80, and no added flavour, it seems a fairly natural taste: a creamy VaBur with a splash of Oriental pizzazz! The room-note's pleasant enough and the nicotine's mild.

There's the good points, here's the bad: the burns speed, damn, it's lightning-quick.

I'm sure lots of folks would love this, but I find it a bit of a bore.

Somewhat recommended.

Nice Oriental-laced flavor with a gentle sweet edge and some nut-like tobacco tastes. It would probably make a good transition blend for a former cigarette smoker, although there is enough here to hold the inveterate pipester's interest. Probably better when used as an all day smoke than as the focus of a special moment with your pipe.

I've been looking for a mellow, smooth, all day type of smoke. Norway seems to fit the bill. For some reason aros scorch my mouth. I like the strong stuff, night-cap, ropes, coins, etc. But they are not a anytime, all day type of experience. Norway could be stronger, but it is a grab it and go. Doesn't take a lot of deciding. My wife even likes the room note. I may try blending in a little strength, but I'm glad I found it.

Bag note is very light but burley forward. Tobacco needs to be pulled apart and allowed some dry time before packing but the cut is easy to pack in about any method you prefer. Initial light is very burley-ish, mild and very reminiscent of some older OTC blends (I.E. Half&Half). False lights rises and is easily tamped down for a quick and easy relight. the first 1/4 bowl is very mild and does not offer much by way of complexity. As the bowl progresses the burley gives a little nuttiness but there is not by way of sweetness from the Va., the Orientals had very little to add other than a very light tickle to the tongue and sinus. I was a little disappointed with my pairing of black coffee, the blend did not offer the strength and complexity to fit well with the stronger drink and the coffee tended to overpower the smoke. Ice water seemed to be a better palate cleanser for tasting the smoke. Overall the blend is pleasant enough and gets better as the bowl progresses but in my opinion lacks the complexity and natural sweetness that i look for in a blend. This is a "stuff and go" type blend, very easy to smoke while your mind and hands are occupied elsewhere as compared to blends that are more complex which beg you to sit and contemplate.

Newminster No. 80 presents as medium and light brown ribbon with a nose of high-content brown chocolate and a distinct granulated sugar note. Moisture content is on the dry side.

Those chocolate and sugar flavors translate directly to taste on the charring light along with an initial Oriental presence that is obvious on the retrohale. The first third of the bowl balances average burley and oriental tobaccos while that sugar flavor is detectable on the tip of the tongue. The middle and final thirds are lackluster without even the chocolate and sugar notes to mask what is essentially a poor quality tobacco blend.

For a pouch note of such promise, I found the smoking experience sharp and bitter. No. 80 reminds me of a Stokkebye rolling tobacco with a bit of chocolate and sugar casing. The burley used here isn't of the quality to provide its own unique flavors, the Oriental is bland and overwhelmed, and the Virginia is muted. One plus is that No. 80 smokes very dry (though quite fast and hot), leaving little mess in the pipe. But this can't hold a candle to the excellent No. 400.

(What this blend will do, however, is help one appreciate good burley. I wanted to like this one, but couldn't give it more than a star.)

Very nice balance of burley & oriental. Burns well, not much relighting required. No bite, quite smooth. Medium in the vitamin N department. Giving it a 3 bcs to me, a 4 has to really move me, which this didn't.

I've read few reviews on here that say that this is very similar to Prince Albert. My grandfather smoked Prince Albert, and consequently it was my first experience with pipe tobacco. If you were to hand me a pipe filled with this Newminster blend and told me it was PA I would be very inclined to believe you! PA is a bit hard to find in my parts, so I think I will keep some of this blend around for the nostalgia’s sake.

I am new smoker and my reviews should be considered with this in mind. This blend was recommended to me by fellow blogger on PipesMagazine. This was smoked with my morning coffee with creamer and honey.

Tobacco has been cellared in jar for 30 days. Ribbon cut. Packed well and seemed a bit dry but almost ideal. Had to relight once halfway likely due to me slowing my cadence. I usually smoke a little fast and must slow down. As per other reviews this definitely burns fast.

Flavor was a nice mild flavor. The sweet nuttiness was predominant with hints of spice from the orientals.

I consider this a very nice tobacco to introduce new smokers to orientals. Virginia/Burley are very common and my first newby tobacco was Carter Hall which I love.

I can understand where more experience smokers rate this below a 3 likely because they consider it bland against the world of Latakia and Fired Kentucky and higher quality Va/Bur blends. I give it 3 stars from a new smokers perspective. So if you are a new smoker looking to start carefully and dip your toe into an oriental this is a good choice at a great price. I am certain this is why it was recommended to me.
