Well, like all tobaccos taste is in the tongue of the beholder. I love this stuff. Smooth as can be, mild for an all-day smoke, smells good enough to eat. Even my anti-smoking friends love the aroma. I find it easy to light, keep lit and to enjoy. Nothing more can be said - I love it and will continue to buy it as my go-to tobacco.

Packs easily, burns well, doesn't bite, doesn't go bitter on me, and most importantly has a nice, mellow, albeit somewhat generic, tobacco taste intermingled with the taste and aroma of its casing that brings marshmellows, grahm crackers, and maybe coconut or banana to mind. It is sweet, but in the way a vanilla wafer is sweet, not the way maple sysrup is sweet.

This is an aromatic, so I've judged it against other aromatics. I wouldn't recomend it at all to someone who abstains from anything but natural tobacco, but to anyone who likes aromatics or wants to try one, it comes highly recomended from me because it outperforms nearly all the other aromtics I've tried.

I have been smoking LL-7 regularly for years now. It is an aromatic that burns cleanly and that I never seem to tire of... my basic, morning, comfort smoke in a big pipe that I can enjoy over several cups of coffee.

A mild, inexpensive, well-balanced natural aromatic blend.

WOW!!! I just found out that one of my favorite bulk blends that I buy from my local tobacconist is actually made by Lane and sold under a different name. I would have reviewed this blend long ago if I had bothered to ask what this really was instead of "Irish Puff"! I can see why they changed the name though (who in the world calls their blend LL-7?). Anyway, this may be the best bulk aromatic tobaccos ever. It is one of the only aromatics I smoke regularly, period. This tobacco is completely bite free, and will not fatigue the tongue. Certainly not complex, it is very tasty and has some actual tobacco taste as well. I know most of the pipe snobs will turn their nose up before they even try this, but they should try it none-the-less. This is much better than 1-Q will ever be and I wonder how many other reviewers have smoked this under a different name and don't know it- especially since this is the first review written about what may be Lane's best tobacco! Try it- at this price you have nothing to lose!

The Virginia offers a little grass and citrus. The woody, earthy burley is a little nutty, though like the Virginia, isn't always noticeable. The mildly sugary black cavendish isn't as vanilla-like as I expected, but then again, the chocolate/vanilla topping may be hiding it a little. I also get some caramel here and there. It's not that complex, but it is a decent all day smoke that's a little creamy, though it seems to dull out in the last quarter of the bowl. The strength and taste levels are mild. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace, and has little nicotine. Doesn't bite or get harsh. Requires few relights and leaves a little moisture, but no goop, in the bowl. An all day smoke.

this is a mild blend with notes of vanilla and sweet chocolate. the casing is moderate to heavy on this one. taste wise it is a creamy/nutty smoke. takes fire well after few attempts of the regular charring and lighting, but thereafter it is smooth with minimal dottles left in the heel. the room note is acceptable. nothing super about this blend but for the regular aromatics smoker who is looking for something sweet and buttey it worth the try. kinda remind me of altadis black and gold in its buttery taste but this one is a bit more sweeter.

This tobacco has become a new favorite for in-the-house smokes. It offers a pleasing room note, but LL-7 has a quality tobacco taste. There is never a bite from this mellow blend which I appreciate when the palate gets a little tender after more aggressive blends have had their way with the roof of my mouth. This blend is like the strong man who knows his strength and demonstrates it with skill and reserve.

For those who would like to smoke a really good aromatic with the pleasant room note of a Captain Black but want no cloying sweetness or overpowering topping, just quality tobacco taste with a hint of casing, you owe it to yourself to give this fine blend a try.

The blend is comprised of stringy light and dark ribbons which makes it very easy to load into a pipe using the Frank Method. The moisture content seems about right. The tobacco itself smells somewhat reminiscent of raisins or maybe molasses.

It lights easily and seldom requires relighting. Taste-wise, it has somewhat of a light caramel cavendish flavor. It is not bitey on the tongue at all. I find that the flavor tends to build up in my mouth as I progress through the bowl leaving a pleasant aftertaste. As you progress through the bowlfull more of a natural tobacco flavor begins overtaking the aromatic flavor. It burns pretty cool compared to most Virginias and doesn't require much in the way of smoking techinque. My wife likes the aroma and said it reminds here somewhat of vanilla but she really can't liken it to anything in particular.

This is a pretty pleasant tobacco to smoke. I like both the flavor and aroma. After smoking it for a few weeks, I decided that I like it enough to order more of it. Usually I smoke Virginias or English blends, but this one seems to accompany the others very well without being drastically different. In the morning, or when I'm in the mood for a lighter smoke than the typical latiaka bombs or don't have time to carefully puff on a Virginia then I usually go for a bowlfull of this.

No kidding..........WOW!!! This tobacco is a really good aromatic that still taste somewhat like tobacco. I can puff like no one has ever puffed and it will not bite me back for doing so. It produces a wonder full smoke (great for those fun smoke rings) and taste really good. Even better it doesn't hurt my pocketbook.

My local tobacconist couldn't come up with a clever name for this great tobacco. He & she (husband and wife) labeled it simply LL-7

This is a good example of wise use of burley for aromatics. A cool smoking blend with a enough casing for aroma without being too cloying. Smokeable to the end of the bowl, which is a rarity for most tobaccos of this type. It never turns harsh or sour. The room note is pleasant and makes the smoking more enjoyable. Highly Recommended.

I have purchased this particular blend from three sources. The first was in Houston at Croft's; excellent shop, marvelous tobacco. I then bought a pound from an old shop in Lake Charles, La. The stuff was not the same! Turns out, it was a bit wet from their humidor and had to be dried out. Whew! The same LL7 after that. My daughter bought me the third pound in Lafayette,La. Perfect amount of moisture, just like Crofts'. Now to the tobacco; there are only two things detrimental about this blend. The name and the fact that it leaves no cake buildup in the bowl. Yes, you heard me right, no cake buildup. I smoke it in a few of my older pipes that have a properly trimmed cake and they need NO MAINTENANCE! Okay, they do need cleaning with a paper towel and a pipe cleaner every few bowls, but I don't need to worry about cake buildup. I just LOVE this blend. If Lane stops making it, I guess I'll have to move on to another tobacco. That is the only way LL7 won't be on the top of my choices for a mild, pleasant, satisfying smoke.

While this is not a complex flavored blend it is full of flavor and has a great aroma. After 2 ounces it has been easy to pack and stays lit and burns even to the bottom leaving no dottle.

A winner here for Lane and for those wanting a reasonibly priced bulk baccy.

I've been led by the reviews here to assume LL-7 takes home the Blue Ribbon for Cavendish tobaccos. That may be true, I've sampled only a handful of such blends in the course of my pipe smoking career. It's certainly the best of the bunch that I've blown through--and that includes such hit or misses as Nat Sherman 509, Lane's other contender 1Q, and Captain Black White.

I've noticed while reading reviews for most "controversial" blends, that the greatest concern from die hard fans seems to be their intolerance for dissent. "Don't review an English if you hate Latakia" it is said. Or "Tell people your taste preferences before you review." Those are noble thoughts, of course, voiced to shoot for some degree of fairness in the review. Then again, do I have to say what I like and dislike before every single review? Doesn't seem very practical, on second thought. For those who believe that only fans of a certain artifact are entitled to voice an opinion, I say the input you receive will be unbalanced and skewed toward your mindset. Yes, your precious rating may see-saw, but do not worry. Those who buy tobaccos only for the number of stars probably aren't worth lumping into your fan base.

With that said, I will say LL-7 excels in the Cavendish group because it burns cool, provides a generous allotment of that classic "Cavendish" flavor without being goopy, has a nice thin ribbon cut for an even burn, and a price point to please the masses. Why do I dislike this? It's not a knock on Lane, but the style of blend. Cavendish tobaccos' intrinsic flavor tastes artificial, and the kick never exceeds anything beyond slightly greater than mild. That's an opinion.

Which is why I must ask myself, why do I still seek these blends out? As many have said before, the room note is spectator-friendly. But smoking this just to smoke when around others has its drawbacks. If a person finds their eyes wandering in the direction of my pipe, I'd rather not bother with the ensuing conversation.

For my last consideration, LL-7 has replaced MacBaren's Vanilla Cream in the aforementioned rotation category. That's right. I'm a hypocrite.

As many people have pointed out, LL-7 is very similar to 1Q and RPL-6 in that it's a smooth, mild, easy smoking tobacco available at a very attractive price. Judged by itself, this is a four star tobacco. Comparing it to the others, I'd say that this is of slightly darker tone to 1Q, and certainly nothing like the fruitiness of RPL-6. For my own taste I prefer 1Q which seems to have just the right balance of taste, whereas I find LL-7 a little too dark. LL-7 seems to have all the emphasis in the bass notes, whereas 1Q is the full orchestra.

Another four star offering from Lane. I must admit that I was hoping for something a little different. Lane already has the top selling tobaccos in the USA in 1Q and RPL-6, and I rather hoped for something perhaps slightly stronger than their very mild, nicotine-less aromatics. But LL-7 is just another in the same vein. No harm in that, but I'll stick with 1Q. In fact when my supply of 1Q runs out I'll go back to Captain Black Royal, which I think is better than all three of the Lane bulk aromatic tobaccos.

Don't get me wrong. For a sweet aromatic, this is one of the better ones. It is more coarse cut, burning slower and allowing more tobacco taste to come through. It is not too wet or over flavored either. I would compare this to a premium version of Captain Black. Many reviewers say that about Lane's RLP6, but I think the opposite. (Read my review on RLP6 if you wish).

The one thing that kept this review from being better is that the taste seems very common to me. It reminds me of some of the drug store blend tastes that take me back to the amateur days. Sure, this is a better tobacco, but I'm not exactly searching for a premium version of Captain Black. After all, a high end Hyundai is still a Hyundai - a good vehicle for the money but still a Hyundai, not a Lexus.

Here is my take on Lane's LL-7 in a nutshell. If you like Lane 1-Q then you will probably like LL-7. I find that the aroma of the unlit tobacco is the same between the two. The room note is also very similar. I think the added burley in this blend gives you more 'mouth feel' as people like to say. Personally I find that I get a tad more flavor and mouth feel from LL-7 than I do with 1-Q. So much so that I will be smoking this from now on vs 1-Q. The cut is the same between the two: ribbon. Same packing, lighting and smoking qualities. I get a sweetish vanilla taste along with a few random hints of chocolate. I also get a taste of nuts from time to time. Most likely from the burley in my estimation. Nicotine wise it seems pretty mild, very similar to 1-Q. I have nothing against 1-Q and will probably enjoy again in the future but I think I'll turn to LL-7 more often in the foreseeable future. 4 stars, recommend very much!

Lane Limited - LL-7.

The pouch contains a blend that looks about 75-25% brown to black, smells sweet, and is a little too moist. But, being fair, it's still smokeable from the pouch, just a touch damp.

The flavour's quite a basic, sweet, aromatic one, giving more caramel than vanilla. Where the tobaccos are concerned I don't really find it has anything to shout about: honey-Cavendish and Burley, with a little Virginia. Mechanically LL-7 does well: a good burn, no tongue bite, and a thick/cool smoke.

The nicotine feels mild, and the room-note's nice.

LL-7? It's pleasant enough, would suit beginners and aromatic fans, but any more than one bowl bores me.

It seems like any other sweet aromatic out there. Somewhat recommended.

Two stars.

I've never been a big fan of Captain Black (at least the white version) because of it's goopiness and overly sweet taste. LL-7 is a close relative, but with the sweetness and goopiness both toned down. I smoked this sample in an XL Boswell, a Duncan Hill Aerosphere (a yard pipe, but a good smoke, especially for aromatics), and a Gatlin-Burlier 1/4 bent apple. The pack and lighting were only fair, par for the course for many aromatics. The blend also required more than the average amount of relights.

The flavor of this one was surprisingly good for me. It started out with a toasted caramel type taste for the first 2/3 of the bowl, then faded slightly to a burley/Virginia sweet nuttiness. I found myself wanting another bowl after finishing one, something that is easy to do with this all-day smoke. It burned down to a dark ash with no dottle, except in my Boswell, which is bored a little high in the bowl. That's not the fault of the tobacco.

Price is the thing that makes this tobacco stand out in a rather crowded pack (vanilla aromatics). There are some great buys to be had on the internet. I found it at LilBrownShack (http://www.lilbrown.com) for $14.40 a lb. I don't buy my tobacco on price alone, but it is a consideration, especially for someone like a college student on a budget. The aroma will help attract the co-eds to him, too.

Now the ratings: flavor-14 out of 20. Lighting and burn-5 of 10. Price-10 of 10. Overall score-29 of 40. LL-7 gets three stars from me. Give it a try, it might surprise you.

I am excited to review LL7 one of Lanes better aromatic blends next to RLP6 and 1Q this blend is something else. A few months ago I had some BCA and 1Q and decided to mix it up and forgot about it until last night, I packed a bowl a realized wow!!! this taste so much like LL7 and told my wife this like I made a huge discovery or something. The only difference was the BCA-1Q mixture was alittle sweeter and the Black Cavendish was alittle more defined as LL7 is not as sweet and has a different kind of a spicy hint to it that 1Q and RLP6 does not have but that's a good thing let me tell you what. LL7 besides being so dang smooth has this chocolate liquor flavor with a touch of marshmallow just rocks my world and is so enjoyable I look forward everytime I pack a bowl of this wonderful aromatic blend and goes perfect with a cup of coffee or after dinner. The fact that it is not a goopy overly moist tobacco blend and its a beautiful color and keeps your nose (yes your nose) coming back to the jar to sniff the stuff because the smell is as good as the taste. I am not sure what gives it the mild spicy note it has to it but I like that when smoking LL7 and keeps it interesting every single time you smoke it, I think a touch of perique would go very well in this blend once on awhile and one could play around with it blending other types of tobaccos and create something really delightful. The nicotine level is low amd the room note is very pleasant which is a plus for those who have picky other halfs, thank the Lord I dont face that problem because my wife likes the camp fire smell to, isn't that awesome?!?!?!!! Yes it is... I highly recommend this fine aromatic and is perfect for a novice pipe smoker and a perfect all day smoke hands down. Good job and two thumbs up Lane Limited for a worthy pipe tobacco please keep this one on the market because I will help support and keep this blend alive and well. It was slightly wet with what I believe to be PG or some other humectant. The flavor was so disgusting I dumped the bowl before I finished. The bottom of the bowl was soaking wet. It's been almost a week and my pipe still stinks and is only beginning to dry out. LL-7 is tied with Firedance Flake for the worst tobacco I've ever smoked. I am assuming the LL stands for Lane Limited and who knows what the 7 stands for, maybe the 7 times it took to perfect the blend. Guess I will never know. I was given a good solid one-ounce sample of this a few weeks ago and wanted to give it a whirl. It has a very sweet vanilla/caramel smell and is really moist. Not sure if Propylene Glycol is used but probably. I loaded it in a cob reserved for such purposes, that way I do not have to worry about ghosting. It is smooth, sweet and somewhat like a desert in that once I started puffing, I did not want to stop. I do not take the aro road very often but it is nice to relax sometimes with one. It does not stand out, and I have never really been a big super 1Q fan but in other reviews it seems to be the benchmark for comparison. Good but next time I am in the mood I will go back to my Captain Black White. I am sure the room note on this one is a crowd pleaser, but I smoke alone on the porch. Nobody opened their door and asked what stinks so that is always a good sign. And if they ever did complain, tough.

Lane Limited LL-7 is definitely a blend I will keep on-hand as long as I have a pipe. It is excellent. Flavor is complex, but not overpowering. I thought it was very balanced, easy smoking, mild-to-medium flavor, and pretty light on the nicotine. Nutty, soft vanilla, maybe a bit of chocolate. Maybe a bit of oatmeal. It reminded me of 1-Q, only better. No candy-coated flavor coming through.

Update 2022-07-26: I pulled this jar out of my cellar and loaded up my Peterson 314 System. My tastes have generally moved away from Aromatics, but this was still a very enjoyable smoke. It had flavors of cloves, cinnamon, toasted raisins, and maybe ginger. The first half of the bowl was good, but the second half was sublime. By the very, very end, the casing sweetness was getting a little much, and I dumped the last few puffs. This bowl never got wet. I was able to smoke a lot of it before I needed to tamp and re-light. After that, it was an average number of re-lights. I'll go back to non-aromatics in my next bowl, but I am glad I have this in my rotation.

Update 2023-01-23: My cellar is getting pretty overloaded and I am on the verge of needing to cull the herd. I tried this back-to-back with RLP-6, and I maintain that this blend is superior in every way.

Thin brown and black ribbons emerged almost wet from the bulk bag, the scent very reminiscent of RLP-6, although the cut is different.

This behaved particularly well in my corncob pipe after about a half hour's drying time. Loosely packed (as seems to be the key for smoking all the Lane aero offerings) produced a bowlful that after the charring light, a gentle tamping and the ignition light burned to the heel of the pipe without further relights.

I didn't know that I was becoming an aromatic tobacco fan until recently, in particular because of Lane's RLP-6 and its slightly English cousin HGL. This is slightly different from Lan'es other aromatics, but only slightly. Wheras 1-Q is the bulk version of Capt. Black Royal and RLP-6 is the bulk version of Capt. Black White, LL-7 is definitely Capt. Black Copper. Unlike its Captain cousins, the Lane bulks contain much less humectant and for me are therefore much more pleasant to smoke....not to mention a helluva lot cheaper, even with shipping from an online retailer.

Like Lane's other aeros, this one offers negligible nicotine. However, when compared with BCA and 1-Q, LL-7 and RLP-6 both offer a shade more nicotine, probably because of the inclusion of more burley in addition to the ubiquitous black Cavendish.

Flavor starts with almost a smores (i.e. graham cracker, marshmallow & milk chocolate) scent but quickly becomes more caramel-like by mid bowl. Thanks to either the blend or my body chemistry, this one doesn't even tingle my tongue, let alone bite it. I can and do smoke consecutive bowls of this; the gentle rounded tobacco flavor, lightly done toppings, low nicotine and burn characteristics make this an ideal all day smoke for me.

My experience with Lane aeros is that the best flavor is reached by mid bowl in most pipes. And like Lane's RLP-6, 1-q, BCA and others, this one sings best in a corncob pipe. An all day smoke for me if not an every day smoke; it is a bit one note and could become boring for some smokers. For me, this is a solid 4 star aromatic blend and is worth a try at the typical $2.00/ounce price point. My current order of preference for Lane's aeros is (from most enjoyed to least) would be RLP-6, LL-7, 1-Q and finally BCA...but I enjoy all four and keep at least two of the four in regular rotation.

If you like Lane's aromatics, this might make a nice addition to your repertoire. It is very moist, sweet, and smells lovely. Makes a nice potpourri too. I store this sort of think in my handkerchief drawer. None of Lane's blends hold my interest for long. But some folks love them, and for what they are they aren't bad.

Like most Lane tobaccos LL-7 is not something you smoke for the nicotine. This is a very mild aromatic comprised mostly of Virginias and then topped with a mild chocolate flavoring. The chocolate is present but it doesn't stand out either in the jar or while it's smoking.

If I want chocolate this probably isn't the one I'd go back to regularly, I save that for 7 Seas. But this is a nice cheap tobacco that can be used to tone down stronger blends.

Flavor profile is definitely light grass/citrus from the Virginias, very much the earthy cocoa (this particularly on retrohale) nutty notes from the Burleys, and just a slight vanilla/chocolate note from the top dressing. The top dressing is probably more subdued for me since this blend has about 2yrs age on it. It's a very well behaved aromatic. Not too hot or wet. Could definitely see this being a go to aromatic or all day for aromatic fans. If you're looking for an aromatic to enjoy around others pick up an ounce or two of this from a local B&M or online retailer.

A delicious smoke that I find myself craving, especially on hot days. It has a good lighter tobacco taste that isn't too overly cased or flavored in the smoke. It does however give you just enough of the aromatic side to know you're smoking an aro by the actual smoke entering your mouth, not just the room note. Never bites even puffed hard until the end, leaves a pleasing aroma that my wife doesn't bitch about... both on me, around my mouth, or in the car etc. Many other tobaccos (even aros) she says I "stink". I do sometimes find it a bit light in the tobacco flavor department but if I want one to smoke while I mow or dink in the garage this is it.

This aromatic burns well enough and does not cause immediate tongue bite. It does tend to get wet in the pipe and tongue bite is noticeable the following day. The scent in the pouch is a somewhat chemical smelling vanilla. The aftertaste is simply bad. I couldn't detect any room note. Normally I'd forgive a lot, but in this case the aftertaste is bad enough for me not to recommend this.

Lane limited makes great mainstream blends. I enjoy RLP-6 very much and this seems to be similar except it is a ribbon cut. The cut makes LL-7 burn a little hotter in my opinion. The pouch note is sweet with a hint of chocolate. A little moist but not overly so. Upon lighting the nutty burley comes through and the smoke is on the mild side of medium. Very little nicotine. Can be smoked all day with no trouble. I would place it right between 1Q and RLP-6 on the flavor scale.

This is a great chocolate/vanilla aro. Awesome after taste. I mixed mine with about 1/3 granulated 5 Brothers, which I always do. This is also between 3 and 4. I might like it better than 1Q.

Received as part of the customer appreciation pack from P&G. Smelled very good in the pack. Taste was sort of hit or miss when I was smoking it. Was sitting outside a hotel smoking when some other smokers and non smokers came out and commented on how good it smelled. One asked if it was captain black, so it might have a similar room note. Overall I find the blend o.k. I will smoke out the sample, but will not order more.

Update 6/04/10: Can't stand it anymore, just to sweet and smells like a strong potpourri. Guess my tastes are changing.

Pouch: Moist, smell of chocolate and vanilla. Contains mostly cavendish with some virginia and some burly.

Flame: Burns well, medium body, smooth, no harshness. No tongue bite. Taste of chocolate, vanilla when the cavendish lights. Nice initial tingle which goes away quickly.

Nose: Smooth, creamy steamy chocó vanilla. Smells like the bag. Nice easy to like flavor. Like 1Q but chocolate not vanilla, bit more body and flavor.

Down Bowl: Stays somewhat dry, no bitterness. Flavor uniform as bowl progresses, mild N, no bite, slight nose tingle, no mouth tingle at all.

Aftertaste: Smooth chocolate, little tobacco taste, no bitterness, slight tingle in mouth. Flavor in nose is chocolate.

Conclusion: Mild strength, mild moist smoke, tasty but not like tobacco, nose smell is chocolate and pleasant. Try PS Nougat if you want more tobacco taste. LL-7 is a tasty morning treat with ice coffee flavored with cream liquor. Nice in hot weather.

One of life's great mysteries to me is why the same people who rave about this blend also dislike Lane's 1-Q. To me, if you let 1-Q dry out for a day, what you'd get is very similar to this. They both have the same saturated sweetness.

This is by far the most interesting and enjoyable aromatic tobacco I've had the pleasure to smoke. Not being one who likes aromatic blend this is a nice blend. From start to finish it consistently stayed the same flavor. Most blends lose flavor or get bitter. Whatever you taste at first light is still when you empty the bowl.

I was gifted this one, it's not terrible but it's far from great. It a typical aromatic for me. It's fragrant from the tin smells like a chocolate caramel candy. Its very syrupy and moist.

As for the flavor it's very smooth and chemical tasting with some caramel and vanilla flavor with some chocolate and nuttiness.

It leaves a sticky mess in your pipe, and needs some relights.

Wow! This is a good aromatic tobacco! It actually has flavor—flavor that’s balanced between the tobaccos and the topping, and, doesn’t have a dedicated agenda to destroy your tongue! The aroma, both in the tin and in the air, is very pleasant. The smoke has enough body to make the retro-hale noticeable and a pleasant sensation. This is a contender for the best all-day, any day aromatic.

Typical light vanilla, creamy flavored mix. I am fairly certain this is a long, thin, ribbon cut version of RLP-6. The tastes are virtually identical. Very mild smoke. Nothing exaggerated or mind blowing. Just light creamy marshmallow like back taste. I smoke a lot of RLP6, so I like this just fine. Some pipes prefer a different cut to others, cube, flake, ribbon, etc., so this may help you choose this blend. Nice with a pinch of Stoke's Dark Fired added for a hint of smokeyness.

I fondly remember Lane's BCA and 1Q, soI decided to order up some of their other bulk products with hope in mind.

I opened the tin and knew immediately this was not going to be a great experience. The contents was thin, dry, and came across as a generic medium to dust on the flavor of the week. The Vanilla or Caramel was simply nondescript "sweet" topping. The product packed and burned well and offered no challenge to a novice wanting a bland unobtrusive smoke. I did enjoy it more than the Hazelnut blend I also ordered, but not enough to repurchase it.

In the end I just used it to mix with other weed laying about. I guess I was not enthused by something named after the girl rock band L7 (perhaps).
