This black cavendish blend offers very little tobacco taste. What you get is a vanilla with a little depth, a hint of chocolate, and a light sugar note. Barely has any nicotine. The taste level is closer to mild than it is to medium. Won’t bite or get harsh. Needs a light dry time. Burns cool and clean and slightly slow with a smooth, very consistent flavor. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights as it burns a mite wet. Has a very pleasant after taste and room note. Can be an all day smoke or a mixer.

Sutliff Tobacco Co. - Black Vanilla.

It's a black, coarse cut, sweet smelling blend, which arrives as you'd expect a steadfast aromatic; moist. I like to smoke my blends a touch damp, but others may deem it necessary to let it air.

I don't find the flavour quite as 'clumsy' as a lot of the vanilla aromatics. The vanilla forms a LOT of the smoke, but the fire-curing adds a subtle smokiness, and detracts it from being too typical for this genre. It creates big plumes of smoke, which, although smelling sweet, might require an open window! The burn from BV is perfect; cool, dependable, generating a bite-free smoke.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: like I said, lovely!

Black Vanilla? A nice smoke, one which deserves a recommendation:

Three stars.

I am not sure how I missed Sutliff tobacco for so many years and have smoked some very good blends that have stayed in my rotation, but Black Vanilla is the best I have had. When it went on sale at P&C last month, I bought an ounce of several Sutliff blends, including Black Vanilla. This is the vanilla blend I had hoped to find for a very long time. It is a pure black cavendish with a very pleasant room note. It is one of the few vanilla blends that I can actually taste the vanilla. Be sure to use a big bowl to smoke this one, or you will be reloading. No bite, burns cool. This is a winner!

An excellent Vanilla flavored pipe tobacco. Mild, nice room note. I'm a sucker for Vanilla flavored aromatics. This is right up there with the best. The smell in the pouch is nice, reminds me of a pipe tobacco I smoked years ago called Carmella. Highly recommended.

Smoking now:

Bought for mixing but wanted to give it a smoke on its own. The smell is sugary, and vanilla. More sugar than vanilla. Obviously pleasant. Thicker course cut of moist but not sticky tobacco. No dry time just packed and smoked.

As with other aromatic cavendish mixtures the char light takes patience. Once it’s going it’s an easy going sugary slight vanilla smoke. Very light body. Retrohale is smooth and easy with notes of sugar and vanilla. Rather consistent as the bowl smokes although the vanilla dissipates at the half way mark, however it stayed sweet and pleasant. No mouth tingle or bad aftertaste.

Would add sweetness and vanilla to whatever you’re blending.

This is one of my favorite all day smokes, yes it's a simple blend black Cavendish with vanilla but sometimes less is better. I like that the aroma stays with you throughout your bowl. And the Cavendish give enough flavor to make every bowl worth smoking. There's times when I just want a good experience I don't want something complicated I don't want to figure out what's this or that I just want to enjoy my pipe and the beautiful day. This simple blend allows me to do just that. This blend is a little moist but lights well is easy to pack and burns down nicely relights are necessary especially if you like to pause awhile. There is no tongue bite here to take away from you enjoying yourself. Wife likes it as well, "it's nice" she says.

I don't know about this to be honest. I've had Super value and Smokers Pride "Vanilla" and they both tasted more vanilla than this. To me this is a relabeled bag of black Cavendish. Squeeze a handful of prunes as hard as you can, and look at that glop, and this will be similar in both visual and stickiness. It's not bad, but its just so so to me. I mixed some with a measure of SWR that was getting a bit dry, approx. 50/50, and basically made general atmosphere flavor. To be so goopy, it had very little vanilla odor in the bag as well. I bought this as a diff black cav mixer mainly, but honestly, figured I'd sneak a bowl every now and then due to the supposed vanilla flavor. Meh, just a black Cavendish mixer.

This is a very solid go-to for me. Well cut, perfect moisture. Thick smoke that slowly surrounds your head. Vanilla is definitely the main flavor, but it is subtle, yet warm and rich, more like a black vanilla bean. No bite. Room notes are pleasing. My wife likes it, and she has very stringent room note standards.

In the world of Vanilla black Cavendish's I rate them in two categories. Shade of black and strength of Vanilla. The darker BC like this and McClelland VBC and Lane BCA seem to be much better quality than say House of Windsor's Argosy which was grayish black. This VBC is heads above most except the two I listed above which is saying a lot since the world is literally littered with Vanilla Black Cavendish blends. Not super sticky and not giant unmanageable chunks of gloppy leaf, this came somewhat dry and has a truly exceptional aroma. Classic pure vanilla scent. Sutliff produces noxious mixtures of just about any flavor you can think of to spray leaf with and those blends have made me gag after a puff or two. Sutliff Black Vanilla got the perfect Vanilla taste and aroma down pat with this stuff. I taste chocolate cake with Vanilla Icing which is exactly what I was wanting. McClelland's VBC has the Butterscotch down, Lane BCA has a great base but the 1Q type aroma leaves me wanting a little more Vanilla, that's where this blend shines. Aromatic where passerby's and others in the room will cheer but not sickeningly sweet. Dry for ten min on a plate, burns down to last 1/4 effortlessly and then dump the bowl, the bottom tobacco acts as a filter wringing out tar and goop so chuck it. Price is bottom shelf, very cheap. BTW this was Altadis Black Vanilla before Sutliff acquired it and used great leaf. Mix 1:1 with a golden Cavendish to make an AMAZING smoke!! == Its usually backordered at Pipesandcigars.com which means when you get it, it will be super fresh due to the turnover.

Another mild, pleasant aromatic. Like a lot of the other dark mild blends, this one has a spectacular room note, mild flavor and no bite. It's great for someone getting into the aromatic world, but it is missing some body. It's a little sticky, and even when dried it gurgled a bit. Not horrible, but I usually have to run a cleaner down the stem once or twice during the smoke. Overall, if you want something for the room note- this is a sure winner. If you want an extremely easy to puff all day type of aromatic, this one will please. If you want something with good flavor and body, you'll need to look elsewhere or add something to the mix.

Normally I like an aromatic that is a bit stronger and brings a bit more "body" into the taste. This felt a bit flat for me. Was rather wet and needed drying out a fair bit to make the smoke more satisfying. I think the coarse cut likely contributes to this. When the moisture is balanced it is a very enjoyable smoke, smooth with the odd whiff of vanilla amongst the tobacco. Otherwise it can smoke too hot when wet and tastes bitter and "wooden". I found this one higher maintenance than other aromatics.

As a newer pipe smoker, I am mainly exploring the different blends (I favor aromatic blends, although I am dipping my toes into the non-aromatic blends now) to find what I like. Opening the bag, what I smelled was vanilla with some spices, but it was not a heavy scent. The flavor I tasted was very light vanilla with not really any of the spices from the tin note. I did not have any tounge-bite with this blend.
