A mellow, fragrant latakia blend aged with stave cubes cut from barrels used to mature and flavor Frog Morton's own special whiskeys.
Notes: Notes: The name Frog Morton comes to us from the works of JRR Tolkien. Frogmorton: A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the East Road, between the Three-farthing Stone (fourteen miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (twenty-two miles to the east). Immediately to the north of the village, the stream known as the Water broke into two, creating a wide watery region - this feature seems to have given Frog Morton its name, which means "frog marsh".

Frog Morton's Cellar has easily become my #1 favorite blend. I love rich English blends. I gave FMC a try and this is the best combination of every aspect I love about an English blend and aromatics. some people think this blend borders on an aromatic and they would be right. my English pipe took on a bit of the flavoring however was not detected after a few puffs of the next bowl of a different blend which made me love FMC even more.
it is a rich Latakia blend with the perfect amount of a sweet whiskey flavoring that is not too over powering but really makes the blend come full circle.
If you haven't smoked an English or a Latakia blend before and are interested in crossing over from aromatics or Virginians, this is the blend for you.
If you are a hard core English fan like me, than this is the blend for you.
you are going to love it.

My wife, a Frog on the Town lover, and I received our first tin of Frog Morton's Cellar a week ago. It's gone! I have only been a “somewhat” fan of McClelland English and “Englishish” fan. But McClelland has really rung the bell with their new aromatic English Frog Morton's Cellar. The tin scent reminds a bit of smoky eggnog, in a good way. With that said, I think FMC is a very light aromatic and not a full on aromatic. I think it would be described by some as a “crossover” blend. I was pleased to find that FMC arrived a little dryer than many of the other McClelland English blends and became “pipe ready” fairly quickly. The “stave” (a cube from an oak whisky barrel) imparts a wonderful rum flavor that I don't find to be overpowering. But, if you prefer your whiskey in a glass, there may be too much for your liking. FMC burns cleanly and the flavor deepens as each bowl progresses. Even though there is a fair amount of Latakia in the blend, the room note is pleasant. I did take the time to take the stave out for those that are wondering if the weight of the stave ends up leaving less than 50 grams of tobacco in the tin, and there is no need to be concerned. With the stave removed, I weighed the tobacco on a digital scale and as it weighed out with the full 50 grams. In terms of “Lady N,” there isn't much here which is something I find to be a minor negative. All in all, FMC is a winner. Highly Recommended.

The Cyprian latakia is smokey sweet, earthy and woody, as it plays obvious background notes throughout the smoke, though never really rising to the top. The Virginia is grassy, citrusy with a little dark fruit and earth as the main component. The whiskey flavor is choice and ever present as it tones down the tobaccos to a lightly moderate extent. The taste level is closer to mild than it is to medium. Has little nicotine. Won't bite or get harsh. Needs some dry time, burns rather slowly with a consistent flavor. Requires some relights and leaves some moisture in the bowl. Has a routine after taste. Can be an all day smoke. For someone looking for a mild aromatic English or thinking of crossing over from aros to English, this is a decent blend to start with, though it lacks depth and a bit of character.

I received this blend as a sample and are very impressed. Fresh, the smokiness of the Latakia was evident - immediately won a point from me as I love Latakia. However, the Latakia is definitely not overpowering - just the right mix! Typical English...but then, after awhile you get those notes of Whisky. On the tongue, that same notes are continuing....soft English blend with just the right amount of Latakia for the general smoker; and then that hint of Whisky. A very light hint of fruity sweetness as an afterthought. A definite winner.
Update Oct 2014: I've opened a new tin (the previous review was on a sample), and I just had to do this update because opening the tin was a burst of flavours which could not be picked up fully in a sample. I remember walking through a huge barn of KWV (Cape wine makers) many years ago, where the sherries & ports were aged - thousands of barrels. That same cellary/sherry nose was what was bursting while opening this tin. Keep on smelling, and you'll pick up the whisky infusion with an accompanying sweetness - like a whisky liqueur.
Well, still a winner for me.

I've probably smoked only 3/4ths of my tin of the FM Cellar, but this one is easy to review because the taste never changes, no matter what size pipe or V or U shaped bowl I use. As consistent a blend as I've ever smoked. I compare this favorably to IRC's Gourmet English, but the Frog is more flavorful and the state's misting of a good Whiskey really made the presentation much sweeter than the original FM. In fact, for some reason i found this one to be much different. I think McClelland's made sure that only their finest quality leaf was put in the tins of what will surely one day become a classic. I can't wait to taste this one again once it's gotten 5 or 10 years of age to it (gee, I hope I last that long).

I have been a smoker of Frog in a Pond for some time now--and have cellared quite a bit. For whatever reason, I have been resistant to the other Frogmorton blends--but with the recent P&C sale decided to give this a shot in the 50g tin.
Opening the tin was wonderful! Sweet, smoky, and a rush of bourbon--all promising something completely different from my other English/Balkan tobaccos. For the first bowl, I decided to use a small DG Duke Bent that had just had its monthly alcohol cleaning--and was yet unsmoked.
There is a cube of whiskey barrel in the tin. Thinking I was being punked, I took it out and weighed the baccy. It was the advertised ~50g. The cube is an extra--just don't try to smoke the thing. Or chew on it, as you will get splinters in your tongue. Don't ask me how I know this fact...
Nice taste on a dry pull to check the pack, and then the char light. This tobacco did not rise up that much, and did a nice full burn on the smoking light. It was wonderful. The taste of the bourbon, virginia, and latakia all came through individually--sweet, smoky, tangy with a hint of sour--and a delicious creamy smoke and satisfying mouth aftertaste.
All of it kept this character until about halfway through, when the blend of the sweet virginia and the lat mixed into a solid but defined tobacco experience. The taste of the oak peeked though very identifiably several times--and added to the flavor and charisma. Moving to the last of the bowl, all of it moved in and out of the various flavors, keeping distinction and not a muddle. Nicotine is there, but not so much as to detract from the holistically smooth experience this blend delivers.
No slurpy mess at the bottom or in the stem. The aroma of the smoke is positively delicious. This tobacco meets a solid goal in bridging English and Aro without whoring to either. I am sold--and sorry I did not order the 100g can. This will be remedied several times over on my next cellar purchase. Ummm, I hope that is not considered hoarding.
I think that this is a wonderful tobacco, and a nice treat throughout the day. Unfortunately, there are no subtle notes of rainbows, unicorn farts, spring rain, evening chrysanthemums, or Balkan Sobranie to be found here--just a pleasant, mildly complex and satisfying bowl!

I am blessed with a good pipe mentor who helped guide me to a can of Frog Morton's Cellar as my first smoking experience. I feel like I have now been jaded by not walking my way through the gamut of aromatics. Since that first puff it has become one of my mainstays and I never allow myself to run out.
It is a rich English blend that has retained a hint of the sweetness of the whisky stave. It's not overpowering and is more subtle and goes along nicely with the rest of the experience. There is also a hint of cedar that is noticeable and give the sensation of being in the woods sitting around a camp fire.
It is as perfect of a blend between English and light aromatic as I have found. The refined palette won't be disappointed.

I like Frog Morton’s Cellar because it is mild. I find the taste of whiskey at the forefront followed closely by the smokiness from the Latakia. It leaves a little bit of a nutty taste on the finish that I think comes from the Oriental. There is no bite and find it a little sweet. I would call this an aromatic English. Although I like it, I still prefer Frog Morton on the Town to this blend. I would recommend this and would personally enjoy this on a regular basis.

There is a little block of wood in the can that you should not try to rub out. It takes hours and your fingers will end up a gnarled, bloodied mess. Do what I learned to do: bypass the little block of wood and go directly for the tobacco, which is fine stuff.
I was smoking this at a demolition derby the other night and a gentleman sitting nearby stated that he liked the smell better than all the exhaust we were sitting in. Therefore, I proclaim the room note exquisite. The wife was not so descriptive, saying "It smells ok." Still, I'm sticking with exquisite. "Frog Morton's Cellar: It smells better than car exhaust!"
Reading the can, one discovers that Frog Morton is a real frog who enjoys smoking pipes and drinking whiskey. This makes him about 100 times cooler than Kermit. Frog Morton's Cellar is a blend with actual cubes of wood in it that have been cut from the actual staves that make up the actual barrels that Frog Morton uses to age his own whiskey. Wow, who knew frogs were so inventive?
Ok, the Frog Morton story is cute and charming and all, but, alas, we know it's not real. McClelland got a hold of some old bourbon barrels, it seems. This then, is a "stave-aged" latakia/virginia blend that I quite enjoy and will be buying more of.
The tin note is sweet and bourbon-y. Rich-smelling. I don't consider this an aromatic in the sense that some sort of sauce has been poured on the weed itself, but it definitely has more going on than straight tobacco.
It is a well-balanced blend, taste-wise, with no one element being prominent. The bourbon element plays well with the latakia and virginia and there is a woodsy quality to the whole thing that comes from, obviously, the chunk of wood the tobacco is aged with. This woodsy quality is not as noticeable in the tin note but really comes out in the smoking. That block of wood may have been up against some bourbon for quite a long time, but it is still 99.99% wood, so it's no surprise that it has a pretty profound effect on the blend.
A delightful and inventive offering.

Frog Morton's Cellar is the most recent addition to McClelland's "Frog Morton" line of Latakia-based blends. This tobacco comes with a small cube of Oak wood from an old whiskey barrel, thereby imparting the blend with a smokey-sweet hint of bourbon.
The tin pop gives a nice scent of a wood fire and fine spirits. The moisture content is not too moist, that it cannot be smoked straight from the tin, yet a short breathing period brings benefit prior to packing. The leaves are mostly black with a few ribbons of tan. There is a slight stickiness to the touch, however, the blend burns clean and leaves no tackified residue on the bowl walls.
On the initial light, the smoke is dark then slightly sweet with the whiskey flavor coming through. Once the bowl is burning properly you get large plumes of fragrant smoke. The bourbon flavor is strongest in the first third of the bowl and then it becomes more subtle as the smoke progresses. Mid-bowl, the flavors are subdued, leveling out to a mild pure tobacco taste. As the bowl winds down, the blend starts to give one last rise in flavor and then it is over and one is left with a small pile of pure grey powdery ash. Bowl walls are clean and ghosting is almost non-existent.
Overall, this is a very nice blend that you can enjoy anytime, even as an all-day smoke. It pairs well with a good whiskey or a strong coffee.

This is a fantastic blend, I have had Frog Morton regular and On the Bayou and this beats the other two by far. That is really saying something since they were all fantastic blends.
The blend yields a whole lot of virginia sweetness with fair amount of that Latakia smokiness we have all come to expect from the Frog.
However, the time spent aging in a whiskey barrel and the addition of the charred stave really refined this blend and transformed it into something both unique and delicious. I chose the medium rating for flavoring, not because I think this has a thick topping like a traditional aromatic, but because the time spent with that charred oak whiskey barrel really added to the flavor. There is a delicious whiskey, woodsy, flavor and aroma that lasts throughout the smoke.
This blend truly is someting amazing and I recommend it to all!
Try it with an early morning cup of coffee, they go together tremendously!

McClelland - Frog Morton's Cellar.
Another blend from a trade with Gentleman Zombie; thanks Franck, this is another beauty!
I never realized the unique cube of barrel that's in this until I was going through my list of favourite reviewers to see their thoughts and I read SteelCowboy's: a wooden whiskey block; that's a bit different!
The tin contains a predominately black mixture, probably a 75-25% ratio of black to brown. There's a little more to this than the label 'Ribbon Cut' can imply; it does indeed contain ribbons, but it has many different sizes in there, right from slight pieces of shag to chunky fat pieces. It's all of a great hydration, so on with the smoke:
The whiskey comes through as just enough to give flavour to the smoke, yet it doesn't take over.
The tobacco taste is superb: woody Latakia with vibrant Virginia. There's no harshness, it's fairly tame seeing as it contains a lot of Latakia; I find it quite placid for a Lat'.
Frog M' burns well; evenly, quite cool, but it can burn a smidgen too quickly, so I take it steadily.
This hasn't got even the tiniest nip in it, it can be sucked like mad and tongue bite eludes me!
I rate the room note well: it's charismatic, yet it doesn't smog the place!
Thanks Franck, a four star blend!

Wow! This my introduction to Latakia and English blends. I usually smoke aromatics but with all the recommendations I asked my wife to get me a tin for Valentine's day.
Upon opening the tin, I thought that I smelled a faint petroleum scent with a sweet/sour note, catsup like smell. I loaded up the bowl and it was dry with a hint of moisture. The char light I thought to myself, "I don't know about this stuff." However, by the end of the bowl, my mind was made up... "This sh*t is good!" The Latakia is peppery, there is a very faint taste of whiskey, and a nice creamy smoke. This has more vitamin N than I am used to getting in my aromatics, but not too strong. Burns to a nice salt pepper ash. I tend to hit the pipe hard and it started to burn a bit hot, once I started sipping it cooled nicely. No tongue bite.
With all that said, you will have to excuse me, because I have another bowl to pack! I highly recommend it. Glad I decided to branch out of just the aromatics.
Update: I was smoking it the other night and my wife came out to sit with me. We discussed the aroma of this tobacco and she hit the nail on the head! She said that it smelled like the air in Western Ireland where they burn peat in the fireplaces. I still love the taste of this stuff. My wife even took a puff (she's not a pipe smoker but rather a cigar smoker) and she also enthusiastically said that it tasted good too. I just bought 4 more tins for a rainy day ( um, week).

I'm still quite new to the hobby. That being said, I LOVE this stuff. Very soft, creamy smoke with just enough flavor to keep you wanting more. The last tobacco I reviewed was Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe, which was a little too strong for my liking. Frog Morton's Cellar was nothing but an improvement for me. The tobacco itself has a great smoky flavor that isn't at all overbearing with a subtle hint of whiskey, thanks to the barrel stave included in the tin. The smoke is very light, and easy to enjoy. In fact, after I finished the bowl, it didn't even feel like I had smoked anything. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to start in on the hobby. Bravo, McClelland.

I'm finally through my first full tin of this blend, and good- googly-moogly, I'm loving it.
Appearance: Mostly ribbons, with a view larger, broken pieces of Latakia. The colors range from tan to pure black.
Tin Aroma: Sweet. Very sweet. Hints of whiskey and fruit and a little leather and smokiness.
Flavor: I would not classify this as an all-day smoke for most people, as the sweetness of an American English most be too overpowering. For one or two bowls, though, the sweetness of the whiskey plays beautifully with the smoky Latakia, creating complex flavor that never gets boring and always offers a little bit more. I would say this is a good dessert smoke or any time you are craving an English around people who are picky about room notes.

I'm finding it difficult to classify this as a true English style tobacco- it's more of an aromatic or dare I say "American English"? Far too sweet and goopy to be called an English tobacco and it never seems to dry out on the mat- But alas I've enjoyed this tobacco very much- my wife says it has a pleasant roomnote- the Virginias are cased very sweet as well as the Latakia which is underlying and more of a smoky sweet. Mid bowl the casings are dwindling and they reveal a blend that is somewhat lacking- muted and mild. My tastes for an English blend are not satisfied with this one. This would be a great blend for an aromatic smoker looking to branch out.

After smoking tins of GLP's Sextant and Navigator and discovering that booze and latakia in the same blend don't work for me, I told myself to stay away from this one - no need to try it. However, a well-meaning pipe buddy was bound and determined to send me an ounce to sample, which I did... and since I record my tasting notes via this site on everything I smoke, here they are. Please disregard this "review" if you enjoy this kind of thing.
I like the idea of this, and I think it's well done. The latakia is well to the rear and provides its usual smoke. The whiskey flavor is a bit too pronounced for me, but as I hinted at above, this is a personal bias. The cube is a nice touch and I loved McC's Stave-Aged virginia blend very much. But as with the other booze/latakia blends, the mixing of the two threw the flavor into cloudiness, almost as if the two offset each other but also became less than the sum of their parts. Crossover blends are conceptually nice, but I find that most of them fail to excite my taste buds. Add at least one star to my rating if you like the concept because I think McClellands made this blend into exactly what they were shooting for. In fact, if you think you might like this, you should definitely give it a try. If you're pretty sure you won't, as I was, try it only if it's free!

I've got the pantry stocked with Frog Morton Cellar. It is in my regular rotation, and currently my #3 pipe tobacco.
Initial thoughts: Wonderful tin aroma. Perfect moisture level. Lights easily, and just cruises effortlessly thereafter.
Taste? At first, the Latakia spiciness is front and center. The first third of the bowl produces a stinging nose exhale. No Virgina sweetness noted.
Middle of bowl: the Latakia takes a step back and assumes a supporting note. The Virginia sweetness steps up to the plate. Milder. Can be nose exhaled now with no burn.
Lots of flavor throughout the bowl. Medium strength. Needs almost no relights. Doesn't bite. No noticeable nicotene buzz.
Frog Morton Cellar is tasty! Pairs well with bourbon, rum, or coffee. 3.5 stars. Highly recommended.

Mortgage your house; sell your firstborn; do whatever you have to do to stock up on this blend. The expression "hit it out of the ballpark" is an understatement for Frog Morton's Cellar! It's more like the shot in "The Natural" where the ball keeps going and going and going.
Tin Aroma: Upon opening you are met with the scent of the whiskey. However, it is not overwhelming as some blends are. Mild latakia follows giving the blend a needed "umph" factor. It should be noted that this blend is quite moist. That said, it's moisture did not pose a problem when lighting up.
Taste: As good as it gets. This blend rests easily on the tongue. The latakia balances everything out. Some smokers say that latakia is too strong, but I disagree. In the right amounts latakia is a spectacular leaf. In this case McClelland uses just that perfect balance of latakia.
Frog Morton's Cellar is a rare treat indeed. It is one of those "if I could only have one blend" types. I'll definately have many tins on hand :) I just couldn't fit the stave in any of my pipes.

I am honored and pleased to be the first reviewer for this amazing blend. Mike and Mary from McClelland's came by our monthly meeting for the GCKPC last week and brought us samples of both this blend and Stave Aged Virginia. I spent Thursday and Saturday with this blend and have smoked 10 bowls out of 3 different pipes.
Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of any of the other Frog Morton Blends. I know many love them, but for me I'm more of a Syrian Star kind of man and love my Syrian latakia and tend to shy away from Cyprian blends. I was also very skeptical about this blend because of the "wood insert" in the tin. I wasn't sure how it would work, and as these tins have only had 2 weeks to age it's still pretty new. So with that in mind, here's the review.
I started at pipe club packing my Bruce Weaver lovat (a great english smoker) with a bowl full of the fragrant Whiskey touched leaves. Taking a whiff out of the tin you get a sense of the Latakia, but not overwhelmingly so like some of the other Morton's. This seems to just tease you. You also get a light sense of the whiskey but only when your nose is near the stave.
Once the bowl was packed I performed my pre light ritual of 4 big inhales through the pipe to clear the chamber and test the draw. On inhale one the flavor hit me. A delicious taste of of an almost sweet liquor hit my mouth. I sniffed the tobacco again but got no smell to match what I was tasting. The next 3 inhales all felt the same. So I decided to apply heat. Upon the Charring light I was now greeted with a stronger taste but now with that creamy smoothness of the tobacco joining it. I got a good char and then moved to the relight. Now here is where it gets impressive. Keep in mind this is non-dried tobacco straight out of the tin. I smoked the bowl for 1 hour and 5 minutes straight with no relight. The tobacco burned smooth and even and the flavor profile was delicious. After about 20 puffs I passed my pipe to club president John Cermack (a Morton Lover of all flavors) and told him he had to take a puff. His reaction was as surprised as mine and I had to pry the pipe out of his hands so I could resume my smoke.
The first 10 minutes or so were creamy whiskey goodness which slowly brought forth the latakia flavor. About 20 minutes in I had a good hit of the latakia but the sweetness seemed to go almost buttery. After 40 minutes a nice nutty flavor emerged that really stayed for the rest of the smoke. The smokes since have all followed very similar patterns with a few hitting the buttery flavor earlier in the smoke, but all have been completely wonderful and refreshing. This will most likely become a regular in my rotation. Mike and Mary have truly come up with a new and amazing blend. My applause to you and my thanks for giving us at the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club a chance to be early samplers of the blend.

Well, as a tobacco with such reputation, I expected more. And here lies the problem. This is good tobacco, but it lacks a lot of depth and personality.. I tried Frog Morton on the town before this from Frog Morton line, and it delivers well on all aspects. But Cellar doesn't.. From the tin note, the very strong note, you'd expect a very strong, flavourful tobacco. With promising whiskey and latakia flavour and aroma. But when you pack it and smoke, You get a faint rum taste or an after taste to be exact, and a very faint sweet latakia, a trademark of McClelland. And speaking of packing, the cut is all over the place, from small ribbons, to large ones, with a lot of unkempt leaves and a considerable amount of twigs. Which is a bit annoying, but since it requires a considerable amount of drying time, I could pick up the twigs. Once packs and lights it's a nice, light, all day smoke. With medium body and faint flavour. I will enjoy the tin, but won't order another

I gave myself more than 2 weeks to smoke it before I decided to make my review of this tobacco because I really wanted to get everything from it before I express my humble opinion. Firstly this tobacco has very good rating almost everywhere … which was the reason I really wanted to try it. Although it is not available in the UK I got it from online retailer in US … paying through nose UK customs taxes. IT WAS WORTH IT. First of all tin note of this tobacco is AMAZING. It definitely reminds me smell of good quality Christmas Pudding. Brandy, vanilla (lot of it) and all these spices you would normally came across on Christmas table. For those who don’t know what Christmas Pudding is … just imagine Eggnog. Smell is so tasty that You would like to eat it. Very nice aroma of this tobacco comes not from some additives and artificial aromas but from chunks of oak from wooden barrel which was used for maturation of Whiskey… so in fact it is NOT AN AROMATIC tobacco but proper English Latakia blend. Interestingly you will find chunk of that wood in your tin with tobacco also (I’ve got 2 pieces in 100 grams tin). When you lit this tobacco room aroma is fantastic also. Sweet, Christmassy (again), caramelly… sublime. Taste is fantastic, very sweet. Definitely caramel, vanilla and … I would say rather Brandy than Whiskey. You would taste good Latakia and Virginia in a background. After about half of the bowl all that sweet package gently fades away leaving you with very good quality English - Latakia blend and it stays like that to the end. Nice white - greyish fine ash is what is left on the end. This tobacco smokes cool whiteout any bite whatsoever. There is no tobacco that I came across that I could compare to this one regarding room note and aroma, so I can’t say that it is similar to “X’ or “Y”. It is unique to me and as Artisan’s work is brilliant. I only wish that it would be available in UK soon as it is one of my favourites now. My rating: Flavour 10/10, Aroma 10/10, Strenght: 9/10. OVERALL RATING: 9,5/10

Yech.
Reminded me of the terrible day 40 years ago when I filled a bowl with my Dad's room-pleasing Captain Black. Vanilla casing! Augh!. I've long enjoyed the Frog Morton Latakia line, bought this from the label description, didn't expect anything so powerfully aromatic and candy-flavored. Whisky? No. Vanilla Turkish taffy is more like it. I'm sorely disappointed.
Live and learn. Will be looking for an aromatic-smoking friend I can dump this on.

This tobacco has a nice smooth smell upon opening . The Latakia is not overpowering. This carries over into the smoke. It has a nice smooth consistency on the palate and is a very enjoyable smoke. I am not going to classify whether it deserves to be classified as a true English or belongs in some other hybrid category. I'll rate it for what it is, is it a good smoke with enough interest and enjoyment to be smoked more than once? This is easily a good smoke. If your new to Latakia it's a great smoke. If you smoke a wide array of tobacco, it's good hands down. The smoke was smooth, enjoyable, not goopy in any way and burned nice to the end. Not too heavy on Latakia with somewhat of a sweet note. Well balanced. Definitely worth a try and fills a gap between the heavier Latakia hitters and the wannabes. Room note - not a fave for those closest to you - they'll definitely let you know your smoking that man tobacco in the house again lol.

Very, very nice. The Latakia is fairly bold, smoky, and woody with a touch of spice. The Virginias are sweet and toasty. The whisky flavor is light, but discernible. I love the interaction of the toasty note from the Virginias with the whisky flavor. This is delicious.
Mild to medium in body and taste. Mild in flavoring. Burns well straight from the tin.

I like FMC quite a bit. I used to avoid aromatics because of the usual tongue bite or soapy flavor that some of them have. I generally like Latakia blends, but the War Department often remarks about "burning camel dung." FMC seems to meet all requirements. It tastes good, no tongue bite, minimal snide comments, and it burns all the way down the bowl.
I've tried it in three different pipes. It performs best in deep narrow bowls.

Mild, sweet latakia and Virginia blend. Mild whiskey flavour from the piece of whiskey barrel that is included in the tin to continue to add flavour to the tobacco - incredibly good smoke. It actually has hints of vanilla or even butterscotch just about throughout the bowl. Good puffs of white smoke too. Smoked really cool and absolutely zero bite. Excellent and my favourite tobacco so far. I finally found my "must have", and ordered 5 100g tins.

Definitely a lovely flavored-english blend: smooth, creamy, smoky, subtly sweet... a quality smoke in every way.
So why not four stars? I'll get to that in a moment.
This is the third of the Frog Mortons I've tried. They're all lovely: the base of these blends provides a solid, stable flavor profile that the master blenders of McClelland know how to tweak into wonderful variations of a theme. But no matter how lovely the details of these variations may be, the base flavor predominates.
I liken it to an omelette: no matter how you vary the fillings, it's still an omelette. Some fillings will be better than others, some won't work at all. If the omelette is over- or undercooked, nothing will taste right. But a great omelette, cooked just right, transcends the particularities of its fillings, no matter the difference in flavor. The omelette is the canvas on which to perform flavor variations.
Ultimately, this is why I give it three instead of four stars: Frog Morton's base blend is a wonderful three-star canvas, and to me this variation does not lift it to the next level: Cellar is a subtly-sweet-bourbon-whisper variation of what is essentially the same flavor profile as the other Frog Mortons.
I can see why many of my esteemed peers believe that this is the variation that lifts the base blend to the next level; but, truth be told, I actually prefer both Bayou and Town to this one. They're all successful variations on a theme, so ultimately it comes down to a matter of taste preference. Which means that this, as well as the other Frog Mortons, are worth a try if you're shopping for just the right velvety smooth subtly-flavored English.

I initially bought this on recommendation from someone, as a good introduction to English style blends, but with the condimental tobaccos(oriental, latakia) dialed back. Interestingly enough, I had also ordered some Samuel Gawith Skiff and Squadron Leader, Dunhill 965 and Early Morning Pipe along with it, but back to that later..
Tin note - Smells OK, if not perhaps a tad sweeter than I'd hoped. I am not a fan of aromatic blends, and this stuff smells like Captain Black white mixed with cheap bourbon and camp fire ashes to those not used to latakia. Even still, I find the latakia in this mix to be of somewhat lesser quality, or perhaps a completely different variety to every other blend I've tried with it. It smells(and tastes) more sooty and charred to me, however this could also have been the topping interacting with the latakia smokiness in a bad way.
The tobacco in the tin - as many others have said - is of an irregular cut and consistency. Some leaf is cut wide, some narrow, some ribbon, and some almost looks cube cut. I am not sure if my tin got a rough ride somewhere between McClelland and delivery to me, but there appears to be a LOT of fine tobacco dust in the bottom. This became such a nuisance for me that I had to pour the whole tin into a sieve and shake it out. I also found that due to the inconsistent leaf cut, this blend didn't burn evenly and I had a lot of trouble keeping it lit(especially in smaller bowls). Which leads me to the other problem with this tobacco and virtually every other McClelland tin I've bought - this stuff has a familiar dampness that I can again liken to Captain Black and other OTC aromatics. A type of sticky moistness that I suspect only comes from an application of humectant. I left both FM Cellar, and a new tin of Old Dog open for a full 24 hours and they were still somewhat tacky.
All that said, drying the tobacco out did improve the taste a lot. I could actually taste a nice tang from the oriental, perhaps a slight smokey(although somewhat ash-like) taste, all very light and mostly unoffensive. Despite being dry, I still find the smoke a bit steamy, and it leaves an odd taste in my mouth that persists. Wife likes the room note, and said it smells like someone is brewing some kind of spicy tea next to a campfire.
Would I recommend this to an aromatic smoker who is looking to try something a bit different? Sure! For that purpose, it certainly has a variety of flavors to offer beyond what you'd typically find in OTC aromatic blends.
Would I recommend this to someone looking to try English or Oriental blends? No. After smoking Dunhill EMP, 965, SG Skiff, Squadron Leader, and a variety of other touted blends, this really isn't a fair representation of what English blends taste like. Skiff or Early Morning Pipe would be a far better and fair introduction to those flavors without being overbearing. Frog Morton Cellar, to me, is a somewhat uninteresting aromatic-ish blend that doesn't really deliver as either aromatic or English, and left me wondering how this blend became so popular and widely recommended.

Va-Lat mixtures with whiskey topping are one of the most tasty and satisfying blends the market has to offer, speaking of which, this Frog Morton’s Cellar stands proudly and fierce like an Einherji in the Valhalla of pipe tobaccos.
Don’t be baffled or discouraged by its aromatization : once the tin is opened and the tobacco been sitting for about a couple of hours, the most pungent and bold shades will soften and smooth, and you’re left with a nice ribbon cut ready to fill your bowl with.
McClelland’s leaves are always top quality, and you can appreciate their distinctive traits even in their aromatic blends, simply because the sauce they use is not overwhelming like most of the aromatics out there. The sweetness of the Virginias and the smokiness of the Latakia, everything is there at the right place, accompanied by the charming, warming, alluring and smooth taste of the whiskey.
The combustion is uniform, and the smoke is surprisingly clean and effortless. The times I smoked it inside the house I received compliments for the pleasant room note, which is curious considering it contains a strong and spicy tobacco like the Latakia.
As a rule of thumb, Latakia topped with liquors in general reveals to be a smart choice. At least it did so far.
If you’re thinking of cellaring this, It’d be a wise choice. Besides, I find it smokes best when fresh, as all the other aromatics I’ve tried out. The Latakia tends to lose its spiciness pretty consistently, yet the whiskey ghost still linger somewhere in the blend.
Cheers everyone, Brandr ODS

I'm smoking it... just now. Bought in Switzerland in 2013 at a top end price, it's really very expensive, here in Europe. Packed in an aluminium tin, quite nice, but mainly functional to preserve a perfect moisture, helped by the whiskey soaked oak chunk inside (!)... the result is terrific: sometimes I think that yankees do it better. Medium cut, not very rough, nice mixed colour, quite dark.
Scent: really good, no doubt, with a seemingly natural good whiskey flavour.
Taste: not strong, nor really full bodied, but tasteful. Maybe not so soft as only super-EMs are, but no biting at all, and satisfying.
Room note: not intrusive or heavy, it's ok, and easy.
Burning: a bit faster than my ideal rough mixture, more on the easy side.
Best Briars: the good ones...
My goodness, not the best tobacco I've tried in my life, but this blend is good. Recommended. It lacks only a bit of strenght, and is unfortunately so expensive...

You know this blend doesn't need another review. Seems the reviewers fall into two camps, those being introduced to English blends and those who prefer english blends. I still can't really quite get over the whole McClelland Katsup smell in their Va's, Bar b Que sauce is the pleasant way some folks have described frog morton. Smells like soft mellow latakia with katsup on it to me.
However, after the charring light it tastes like tobacco, a pretty mellow, easy going, causal blend, burns cool, stays lit, though the taste doesn't vary much it's an interesting taste.
It took me a few years to get around to trying this blend. I'm not going to ever turn it down, but I don't know if I'll buy it often. If a friend were asking me about trying their first non aromatic and didn't want a VA/PER this is the blend I'd direct them too. It's inoffensive.

If you have yet to try this outstanding blend, what the hell is wrong with you???
The tin note is very strong. The latakia plays a light role in the scent, and the whiskey bounds through like gang-busters! Fantastically sensual!
The light up is very mild, and creamy. The flavors are only there for an instant, and tempts you to puff again, giving you a peep show of their potential yet again. Its like a game of cat and mouse of sensuality that leads you down a road to Frog Mortons cellar, where you come to the realization the journey was half the fun, the finish is yet to come.
The bowl smokes down effortlessly, and by the time you reached the end, you tear slightly, wishing there was more. Kinda like that night in Panama City that you keep mentally reliving (not the one where you see Grandma Naked....)
Please, do your tastebuds a flavor, and try this blend!

Very simple but superb blend. A solid light and sweet latakia blend perfect for any occasion and easily an all day blend. Not gonna hit heavy with the latakia but has enough going on to give you a smile while you puff. It gets very creamy with age which gives it some added depth all together. It hurts to see this one no longer produced but luckily I have a few tins for the future!

Frog Morton’s Cellar
Yet another post-mortem review for another dearly departed McClelland blend.
Frog Morton’s Cellar holds a special, sentimental place in my heart, as it was one of the first blends I really, truly fell in love with. First off, The Hobbit was the first book I ever read (so FMC had that going for it). Secondly, FMC had “that smell” – the smell I was initially in search of when I (quite literally) awoke one day with a vision, a revelation – a message from God – that pipe tobacco was going to be my salvation from the pricey purgatory and malodorous netherworld of cigars.
As a novice pipe enthusiast, it was a couple of years before I discovered tobaccoreviews.com. I posted a number of reviews back in 2016, the vast majority of which I went back and deleted once it became self-evident to me (as well as anyone else who may have read them) that I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about when it came to reviewing, evaluating, or appraising pipe tobacco. (Only three of those reviews from 2016 remain, the only three I feel to have largely gotten more or less correct). After a self-imposed sabbatical, I presently believe myself capable of commenting on the rudimentary results of my exploratory research into those things deemed worthiest of being found in a briar.
One of the reviews I deleted (I am pretty sure) was a glowing (flaming?) over-the-top, 4-star evaluation of Frog Morton’s Cellar. After posting said review – and a more careful re-reading of other reviews of FMC – I was struck (dumbfounded) to learn that FMC was, in fact, an aromatic blend. As an apprentice pipe smoker who started with aromatics, I quickly became somewhat of an osmotic with regard to aromatics. (In point of fact, chemophobic would be more apt a term, as I mostly enjoyed the tin note of aromatics – it was only after their ignition that I encountered difficulties: the applications of chemicals, the tendency to burn hot, and the fright of “ghosting” were all issues for me). So, I was somewhat embarrassed and more than a bit chagrined with myself for having been so unsophisticated and naïve to have posted such a blushing review of FMC (an aro, of all things).
After McClelland ceased operations, the only thing really left to buy was Frog Morton’s Cellar (another indication -- I thought at the time -- that FMC was an unexceptional blend). The only reason I purchased an additional 2500 grams of the stuff was the faint hope that I would someday be able to unload it on ebay for a considerable gain (once all the other Frog Morton merchandise had been bought up). Suddenly, and quite sadly, this blend that I initially loved so much had become too light, too airy and too soft for me (I was seeking big, bold, full-flavored, robust tobaccos -- the more nicotine, the better). As a result, I’ve been eyeing my 37 cellared tins of FMC rather dejectedly ever since.
After smoking the last of my jarred FMC (in what now seems like a distant childhood memory), I never opened another tin of it -- until today.
I really wasn’t looking forward to doing this revised review of FMC due to the expectation it would become my first 3-star recommendation (or – perish the thought -- perhaps only garnering a 2-star endorsement) given my “new-and-improved,” more experienced (elitist/highbrow) palate.
Having sampled quite a bit of FMC in the past, and not having smoked any of it for at least two years, I decided to put all of my prejudiced notions aside in order to craft a more accurate, fair and balanced review.
Wow -- never have I been so pleasingly and pleasantly humbled . . .
Presentation: The people who put this mix together really knew what they were doing. A beautiful, black-and-tan (mostly black) rough, mixture-style of coarse-cut that looks oddly inviting and pleasing to the eye.
Tin note: Great whiffs of wood, scents of sweet smoke; very Latakia forward. In no way did Frog Morton’s Cellar smell like an aromatic to me (I didn’t detect any whiskey, unlike many other reviewers had).
This stuff tasted great, from start to finish. I loaded a considerable amount of FMC into a rather large Jeppesen bent brandy (basically, a Danish house pipe with more than 2-inches of chamber depth), and it performed flawlessly, from beginning to end. Beautiful, thick, creamy smoke. Dry, cool-burning -- never hot, no bite -- and no relights. No moisture, no dottle; only fine, white ash remaining after all was said and done.
Is Frog Morton’s Cellar something I would smoke again? Absolutely, without question or equivocation.
Is Frog Morton’s Cellar something I look forward to smoking again? Yes – absolutely – without question.
Is it a problem for me that Frog Morton's Cellar has hardly any nicotine to it? No, not at all -- I will take taste over nicotine in this particular instance.
Is it a problem for me that Frog Morton's Cellar is still -- and always has been -- an aromatic blend? Hell. No.
Would Frog Morton’s Cellar be a tobacco I would consider cellaring? Absolutely, without question – and in retrospect, I am so glad to have purchased as much FMC as I did, when I did – my only lament being that I didn’t procure more of it when I had the chance. (Most regrettably, Frog Morton’s Cellar was the only one of the Frog series that I tried).
My sincerest apologies to Frog Morton's Cellar for whatever misgivings or reservations I may have harbored about your honest, truthful, upright integrity as a quality mixture.
This Frog Morton’s Cellar review has been the most unexpected, most enjoyable and gratifying bombshell reconsideration to date. Unquestionably, 4-stars.

I was extremely excited to finally try one of the famous blends out of Frog Morton. Happily, I found it at a local B&M for a decent price. Upon opening the tin, there was something odd about the tobacco. It was hard, and cube cut. Nowhere on the tin did it say anything about cube cut. Alrighty then, it’s a mystery folks. So, in picking up this oddly tough, rough, and charred tobacco, I tried to break a piece off. Man oh man, this stuff was tough. After countless minutes of attempting to roll it out, I took a knife with a serrated edge. I’m telling you, devoted reader, I think it dulled my knife, that’s how hard this stuff was! I had to think here, hard and long. Perhaps it’s like a plug, and didn’t need to be broken down. So I attempted to shove the cube into my largest pipe. Miraculously it fit, so time to get a smoking! The topping is definitely wood, and it lasts throughout the whole bowl. It was extremely hard to keep lit, but I finally got a nice smoldering going. Halfway through the bowl, I noticed the tobacco had completely combusted into an open flame, charring the bowl of my pipe. In an attempt to ash the pipe, and put the fire out, the flame strengthened, and engulfed my favorite Nørding. In a panic, I threw it out of my car window on the highway, where the flaming pipe was run over by a semi who was not expecting such turn of events.
All in all, I’d give my experience an 8/10. The strength was mild, the taste was very woody, and it burned hot hot. Lost two points for destroying my pipe, and scarring the poor trucker who almost flew off the road.

First, this is an aromatic, that is what I consider it to be and that is what I review it as. Now as such it is a fine one, it burns great and it does not bite. As for the flavour, it is sweet; the whiskey is the main course with any other notes on the side. The latakia is noticeable but discreet and much of the tobacco taste in this blend is masked by the added flavour of whiskey. It maintains it's profile throughout the bowl, no real surprises there, but it is pleasant so no complaints from me.
I do find it a bit weak, no strength at all. I tend to favour bolder blends but if one is looking for a mild, tasty aromatic this one is a sure bet. The rest of us can cut it with some burley to add some extra spice.
Conclusion: Great taste, great burn, had it been stronger I would have added a star. But these are two strong stars!

I am a fan of rich and flavorful Latakia forward English blends, but occasionally I find myself in the mood for something on the sweeter side. When this craving hits me I turn to Frog Morton's Cellar as it is still smoky and earthy as an English blend should be, yet the hint of whisky that has been infused into the tobacco gives this blend a slightly sweet taste. If you are a fan of English tobaccos, yet hate Aromatics, do not let this statement put you off. I would not say that this is an aromatic or even an English aromatic, just a slightly sweeter than normal Latakia/English blend. I absolutely love this tobacco and will continue to buy as much of it as I can to keep around for those days that I just have to have something a bit more on the sweet side

Lightly aromatic from the whiskey with notes of vanilla and toast, this blend is so very well balanced between the virginas, latakias and whiskey topping. Nothing overpowers and what really stands out is the balance.
If you are new to latakia, or fearful of it, then this blend is for you. Light enough to not over power, but enough to give you that smokey, earthy aroma and taste. Sort of a gateway to latakia.
This goes well with anything and anytime.

Raise your pipe if you are tired of reviewers who seem to be more concerned with raising their review numbers with a cursory bowl and a summary than getting to know a blend.
Smoking more than one bowl, actually more than three tins was necessary for me to figure this one out. More so than any other blend, I've found my experience of Cellar to be dependent upon bowl diameter, depth and wall thickness. Summary: wider is better, deeper may be if you are a strong puffer, otherwise short to medium, and the thicker wall the better.
Latakia responds well to roasting vs hot incineration to release its taste (as do aged VA tobaccos). Cellar has the added dimension of eminently burnable essences from the wood chunk that you will either love (me and many others, it seems), hate or miss altogether. Keeping this blend at a smolder, distilling the flavors and delivering them to your mouth is the key and most critical for this blend. With my puffing habits, a wide surface area worked the best in a well insulated pipe.
As far as the review of the tobacco goes, yes, it quickly became a favorite of mine partly out of dumb luck in pipe selection. This is a tobacco for bourbon lovers, probably also for lovers of oaky vanilla-ish old red wines. It benefits from at least 9-12 months in the tin before opening and then finishing within a week or two. I've never been able to keep a tin longer than a year, no matter how many I buy, so I cannot comment on aging longer than that.
I ignore all other tins when the cellar is open, it is a definite favorite and go-to.
Pipe Used: Large pots are my favorite
Age When Smoked: fresh to 1 year
Purchased From: smoking pipes and others
Similar Blends: This fills a void left by Mephisto (rum was delicious too). Other vanilla-scented latakia blends like the "mushroom" genre and Nording's Fox Hound have stronger topping taste if that's what you seek..

This isn't a bad tobacco, just not what I expected. I was expecting an English like Squadron Leader with an additional flavor. I got the additional flavor, but wanted the amount of Latakia present in SL. Again, there's nothing too wrong with this - nice, soft flavor of whiskey and no bite at all. Not a lot of tobacco flavor though. I'll keep looking.

This is my favorite frog I have had so far. The others I have tried are the original FM and FMATP. I gave those two pretty low marks, so the bar is low. With this I find an lat blend that is pretty easy to smoke. It can be pretty tasty to satisfy the contemplative smoke, but also easy to enjoy when you are busy doing chores or such.
I guess you can say it is a good all day smoke. My major problem is that I would turn to two other blends by McClelland to satisfy either of those needs. For the contemplative lat blend, I want some Blue Mountain. for the lat blend to smoke while I am busy with other pursuits, I want some Old Dog.
I am not sure what kind of impact the stave has on the leaf. I plan to use the stave in another blend of which I have been smoking to see if it makes a difference there. I am not sure whether there is a whiskey topping added as well, but there is definitely some sweetness that goes beyond what I would normally get from a McClelland Virginia.
That said, I will probably not order any more of this one, but I do recommend it as I don't think someone can be too disappointed with it, because it is just so easy to smoke.
That, and the stave is kind of cool.

Perhaps my real issue is that I simply don't like whiskey flavored tobacco, but I think I'm going to toss this tin after trying to enjoy it several times. It tastes like I'm smoking the chunk of barrel that ships in the tin.

I was looking for a baccy which was my favourite when I lived in the U.K. "The Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture", and by George! I think I've found it!! Many fond memories conjoured up by one single bowl. Ah! Bliss!! Now all I need is something which equates to the "Balkan Sobranie #759 Mixture". - Wil Davis (NH)

After reading a couple of positive reviews about FMC, I sent off to Mars Cigars for a 100 gram tin. I've always been a fan of the Frog series and hoped this one would also be a favorite. To make a long story short, FMC is my favorite of the series and a top 5 tobacco for me.
FMC has a rather pleasant note in the tin and my wife likes the room aroma, which is really nice because I have been smoking a LOT of this blend. It has shades of brown and black in the tin and is a ribbon cut. I've found a loose pack works best with it but it still requires more than the average amount of relights. FMC has a very nice mild taste with a touch of Latakia in the background. There is also a bit of sweetness there, perhaps from some VA combined with the whiskey soaked barrel stave put in the can.It is also reasonably priced.
I am on my 4th bowl of this tobacco today, something that rarely happens with me. That should tell a lot about how highly I think of this blend. Scores for Frog Morton's Cellar:: taste- 19 of 20; lighting and burn- 7 of 10; price- 8 of 10. 34 points equals a high ** score and another winner for McClelland Tobacco.

I have to echo Big D's review down the line. The only 2 things I can add is (1) the faint hint of the bourbon taste that dallies on the tongue after a bowl. A pleasant reminder that gently fades...too cool. The second item is the room note: definitely not the typical Latakia insect repellent odour. Oh no. Almost like a fireplace in the cabin fragrance. Playing with the tweezers and magnified lamp revealed a generous amount of stoved VA in the blend - balances the Latakia component nicely. I generally prefer Virginias overall, but this Frog invites back-to-back bowls with non of the usual tongue fatigue. Another cellar dweller for me!

Well, it has been a very long time since I submitted a review. Partly because I fell off the pipe for a number of years, and partly because, when I did fill my pipe, my ole faithfuls (namely Pipeworks & Wilke Bleeker St since Dunhill too a breather from mixing A21000) stood proud. My wife lets me smoke inside, she often comments on the nice aroma, so, why stray from aros...
About 6 months ago, now that I have my smoking room finished and professionally vented, I felt it was time to take care of the smoker, not the audience...on to English blends I went...started with Dunhill MM 965, liked it. Then onto Squadron Leader, really liked it...but, never felt compelled to write a review. While these 2 blends all but knocked my PW blends out of the rotation, they still did not drive me to review.
The next blend, Frog Morton OTT...wow, now, I felt like I landed on a keeper. This became my daily go to...ever, ever so slightly, it helped me get back to my beloved Bleeker St., marrying the natural, earthy flavors of the English with a bit of sweetness...Encouraged by the nature of this blend, and still yearning for a bit more sweetness (not the right word, as I do not want Maple sugar sweet, but some added notes to accompany the Lat) I ordered FM Cellar, hoping to notch up the aro/sweetness/flavor component just a bit...well, this blend is spot on brilliant, (to me and my palate)....I am 50g into this tobacco and very satisfies...so much so, I am writing a review....
I am not going try to make an attempt to explain the flavor, smoking characteristics etc...this review could be akin to a car review that, rather than quote the marketing brochure 0-60 speeds to show that the car is fast, the reviewer simply states that 'my butt dyno tells me this car is fast".
The few reviews tell me this tobacco is good...the words on the tin tell me this tobacco is good...my palate tells me this tobacco is STELLAR!
Give it a try...

The underlying flavor profile is that of the original 'Frog Morton'. That is where the similarity stops. The hunk-o-bourbon barrel in my 50g tin(and I think that tin size may be important here), perfumed the tobacco exquisitely. If you are a lover of bourbon, this is not to be missed. the tin aroma is like sniffing from a glass of well aged bourbon(pick your distiller), combined with, of course, the smokey latakia of the blend. The aroma and flavor remains completely through the bowl. I see the tin size as important due to the ratio of wood to tobacco. I think the infusion in the smaller tin is amazing, but could be less so in the 100g tin. That is, unless there are two pieces, or one larger one in the larger tin, I don't know. Lastly, is the weight of this piece of barrel subtracting from my tobacco? Either way, it's worth the price of admission. This will undoubtedly make for a wonderful aging experience. Top scores to McClelland for a unique experience!

I had the privilege of trying this out of print blend and am sad to see it go. I'm a fan of latakia and this blend really hit the spot for me. JimInks' review pretty much nails it IMO.
I'll add to it to say that I find FMC somewhat sweeter and more flavorful than the original Frog Morton blend - I understand why many people enjoy it, but I think that the legendary status of it somewhat exaggerates how great the blend is. It's pleasant tasting & has a pleasant room note, but it's still a little thin-bodied. I like my tobacco to have a stronger flavor & a higher dose of vitamin-N than what FMC delivers.
I enjoyed my 50g tin of FMC more than I did the tin of original Frog Morton that I smoked, but again - this isn't one that I'm really going to be missing. Glad to have experienced it, but there's a lot of other stuff I enjoy more.

This could easily become my favorite tobacco. I have trouble packing my pipe, but this blend was very forgiving. It took a couple of lights and it stayed lit all the way through. My cadence is too fast, but I did not get any tongue bite and it did not heat up my bowl too much, another problem I have.
I'm not a fan of Latakia, but it's mild in this blend and the whisky is just there, not overpowering. The taste is mild, smooth English with a pleasant room note. This blend is now on my short rotation list.
I will smoke more before I make a final decision, but for now this blend is a keeper.

Quite a nice baccy.
I started the Frog Morton venture with Across the Pond. I favored that, but realizing there wasn't anymore of that readily available, I got a tin of this. Then, I got a load of 5110 for the forseeable future.
All three are in the same vein with differences in nuance. I still prefer the subdued latakia in across the pond which must be attributed to the differences between Syrian and Cyprian Latakia. I find 5110 and Cellar to have a bolder Latakia presence. They both just have more of that campfire smoke where its clipped a bit in Across the Pond.
Amazingly, I find the differences between Cellar and 5110 to be relatively negligible. Cellar might be a bit more nuanced. It smokes and packs a bit easier as this may just be that the cut of the tobacco is a bit more quality controlled.
As cool as the whiskey stave is as a novelty, the main thing it offers is smell from the tin. If I put the same stave in with 5110, smells the same. I'm not sure the wood really adds any flavor to the tobacco. I really never taste whiskey as a a part of the tobacco's flavor. Any flavor that might be construed as such I attribute to the blend of tobacco. That may be sacrilege to lover's of this blend, but I really don't taste a whiskey flavor difference between this and 5110, smell from the tin aside.
It's a great smoke due to it's great cut and pleasant to experience beautifully quality controlled tobacco. It's better than 5110 for those reasons alone, but I really don't have much of a reason to pursue this tobacco in great quantities with 5110 being sufficiently stashed in my den.

There is indeed a noticeable presence of Latakia in this smoke; in my experience it presents as smoky/Woody along with a trace of a floral note. Just a trace. The whiskey, which was definitely one of the reasons I purchased this, (as well as the barrel cube) is apparent but not overwhelming, and tastes like a good quality product. The Virginias give a tanginess of their own, which plays really well with that of the whiskey, as well as also giving another note which would be more like a subdued hay quality, with a touch of earthy. This blend smokes cool in general, and will nip really only if pushed. This is also in part due to the whiskey. Liquor cased blends can burn hotter. Nicotine is rather mild. I myself found the room note pleasing, but as a smoker, I'm biased. I wouldn't push one's luck on this blend's room note. I would say everyone should give this a try, with advice that aromatic preferring folks might not find it sweet enough, and might be put off by the whiskey and Latakia. Non aromatic preferring people especially those who love aged Virginia might find something to appreciate here. This is not a lat bomb, but I wouldn't call it a blend for Latakia rookies. All in all a great blend, one I would get again and again .

These may be common, but I'm relatively new to pipe smoking so this blend to me was a bit of a singular experience being the first I have had that is both aromatic and English/Latakia. This smells good in the tin. Very whiskey-like topping dominates the bouquet.(I do not believe it is all from the stave-cube either, but an actual sauce) Some floral notes, but they are tough to pick up on because there are such formidable vinegar/alcohol fumes present. From a fresh tin, that was all I could smell. It may dissipate with some aging. I mention all of this because other reviews seem to have had less of the whiskey influence. May be that mine was just very fresh. After some dry-time, it smoked well if not a tad damp needing only two relights past the initial true light. The taste was a sweet and smokey English with that whiskey note managing to hang around until the last I smoked of the bowl. (I rarely smoke the last bit.) Bite free and if you enjoy the liquor, you could smoke this all day. For me, it will be a few pipes a week-smoke. Delicious, really and it seems quite popular. I imagine it will be around for a long time. The Frog Morton series has been a solid two for two for me. This and 'On The Town' are two pipeweeds I'll be keeping in stock. The only inhibitor to perfection I could possibly see with this blend, is the topping. The strong whiskey note makes it so specific a smoke, it may limit the appeal for some. Then again, how many pipe smokers dislike whiskey? haha

I'm not sure if the block of wood you find inside actually adds to the flavor or is a collectable gimmick, but Holy Wrinkle Balls, this is some great stuff. I have to wonder what they pour inside, since my nose was tingling from the vapors and high octane spice. Whiskey, mulled wine, burnt wood, and what must be gunpowder mingle to amp up the flavor.
Mmmm, I love this smoke. It is deep and spicy. One of the few that does not get boring by the end. I do wonder if what they put on must be toxic... nothing that tastes this great is ever good for you.
It has been awhile since I had the original Frog Morton, but this one is easily on par if not better than the original.
Everytime I make a tobacco order, I try to get a good mix of makers and blends, but as time goes by, there is more McClelland in the cart and I wonder why I even stray.

I've been on a mission to find some good tobaccos. So often that has been met with disappointment and I wait, hoping that with age or maybe a few more bowls, I'll come to like some particular tobacco I just spent a bunch of money on. (I'm speaking here of blends other than FMC.) In some instances I find one I "kind of" like and then it gradually starts to grow on me and I learn to appreciate its subtleties. This has been my experience with other tobaccos to date.
Well with FMC I can honestly say it was the first time I was actually blown away by a tobacco. I quite literally said after the first couple of minutes, "Wow. This is really, really good."
I hadn't tried any English blends before, and I realize many put this in the "intro" category, but honestly, if this is intro I'm not sure how much further I need to go. (My only hope is this blend will continue to be made available internationally come what may in the USA. But enough about politics.)
Tin note: subtly smokey from the Latakia with a mild alcohol scent present as well; present but not domineering.
Taste: Simply unbelievable. I wasn't sure how I'd react to the smokey Latakia, in fact I was a little worried that I would find it too strong, so if anything I went into the bowl with some trepidation about how this was going to go. Well, boy was I wrong! I couldn't believe it. I should have probably known that for someone like myself, who loves the smell of wood smoke at any time of the year, I'd probably also like a smokey taste. For anyone who, like me, was reticent about these smokey, Latakia blends, the only thing I can say now is this: do you like smoked meats? Do you like smokey BBQ sauces? Then you'll probably like at least some measure of Latakia, because that's what it's familiar to I think.
If I were to paint a word picture of how it tastes, I would say: Hints of woodsy, single malt scotch sweetness with the subtle flavour and aroma of wood smoke mixed with hints of the sweet incense that tree resin sometimes give off on warm summer evenings, all in one taste profile. This is Autumn in the northeast in a bowl.
This is a good all year round smoke but it would especially pair well with summer mornings/evenings as well Autumn days and nights when the geese are flying overhead and when the days are milder and the morning and evenings cooler.
Room note: I smoke outside so I'm not sure and its not always easy to tell on your own, but from what I can tell of it the note would likely be a slightly "woodsmokey" scent with hints of sweetness from the whisky profile.
Highly, highly, highly recommended. (Is that clear enough? :D)
Let's put it this way. I smoked one bowl and immediately went out and bought three more 100g tins. I've never done that before and most of the tobaccos I've tried, I haven't reacted to with much excitement. (Until FMC, it was usually "yeah, that's pretty decent" at best, and in many instances it wasn't even that.)
I think if you like smokey-sweet and a bit of single malt smokey goodness, they you'll adore this tobacco.
UPDATE::
I'm progressing through this first tin of FMC and I can say I continue to be impressed by it. In fact, I've decided to cellar at least 18 large tins of this blend.
Age When Smoked: Mason jarred for 1 month.

This tobacco mix looks interesting. Mainly black, some brown and bright tobacco in a mix of wide, medium and fine, very irregularly cut ribbon, heading towards a Wild Cut. The dominant tin notes are fresh, fruity tobacco and sweet Whisk(e)y, reminding me of Drambuie® or Southern Comfort®. I call this one a Flavoured English Mixture, not an Aromatic. Base and body of this blend is definitely (soft) English. A cube of a former Whisky barrel in the tin delivers a Whisky aroma (which I find much more difficult to identify in smoking than in smelling, and I am a Whisky enthusiast), plus a note of wood.
FROG MORTON’S CELLAR is a light, easy-going, fruity, tasty and fragrant smoke with a mild aroma range, able to satisfy Scottish, English and Danish pipe smokers. An interesting gate for Aromatic smokers to approach English blends. Good quality tobacco. A short drying time is advised. Good smoking “mechanics” (stuffing, lighting, burning, etc). Consistent taste throughout the bowl. The Whisky flavour is difficult to catch and Latakia is very low but always present. There must be a touch of additional, artificial sweet topping, which I am sensitive for and never appreciate. I favour purely natural tobacco-sweetness and reserved salty tastes. All a matter of individual preferences.
For my personal satisfaction, I miss depth and a determined character in this mixture. Disappointing after-taste. I also miss the aromas of campfire, peat and leather in the added Latakia. FMC might be an occasional light smoke for in-between, mainly to satisfy visitors, as this blend is pleasantly fragrant. A very dark roasted, unsweetened coffee is a matching company.
A recommendable trial mixture for Aromatic, Danish, Scottish and soft English smokers. Not recommended for hard-core English and English-Oriental smokers (too little Latakia, no peat, no Oriental, no spice).

Smoking with Da Whisky Frog.
This is my first Frog Morton blend. I've been neglecting Mr. Morton's invite for quite a while. I chose "the Cellar" based on reviews of the series (this one has the highest marks) but mainly because it contained two of my 4 basic food groups: Tobacco and Whisky. What's this? Put the two together? Whisky flavored, Smokey-smooth Latakia?
Ka-ching I'm in. Be right over. Light-er up Morton and pass da bottle.
Smooth mild (not heavy didn't clean the grill after the Q) smell. But smokey with the flavor of real whisky. When you pop the tin lid the spirit of Whisky/Alchohol hits the air. I was surprised to see the chunk of whisky barrel in my smaller tin. I thought it was only in the larger cans. I keep it in, but take it out when going for the pinch.
The taste? Imagine smooth smokey quality Latakia infused with Geniune Whisky flavor and sweetness combines with the tasty and just amount of touch of sweetness in high quality famous McClelland Virgininas!
Bam! All day, any-time smoke is born. I can see why some pipers put aside other blends for this one for a while, The Whisky Frog has that kind of holding power.
Now just to blend my other two food groups.. pizza and sex.
4 stars. Have a seat with this Frog and smoke it up, in the cellar, or anywhere you wish.

I don't have much to add to all the other positive reviews. My experience was that this was a very agreeable introduction to English blends and as the year has progressed, it continues to be a go to for a reliable "english" experience. I couldn't detect any particular whiskey connection as promised on the tin, but as I really do not like whiskey, that was a good thing! the tobacco remains very smokable 6 or more months after opening the tin - I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing with regards how freshness is maintained in the Frog Morton Cellar (I'm always a bit wary of any bread for example that is still edible 2 weeks after purchase - what did they shove in it to allow that to happen?, etc!) - anyway, just an observation that for an ocassional smoker of English Blends, this seems to last well after opening so may be a good choice. As said elsewhere, my experience is that this tobacco is very docile and can be smoked at whatever pace suits with next to no bite.

Very nice and enjoyable. Out of the tin the nose is mildly sweet and subtle. The ribbons are uniform and alternate between light and dark browns to black. Moisture fresh from the can is perfect for immediate use. Gravity feed....char...tamp....and light leaves you with a one match smoke. Cool. Mellow and subtly sweet this is a blend that is easily French inhaled and rolled around the tongue. I'm not sure if the charred oak chunk is really effective but it's a neat idea nonetheless. I will definitely keep this in my library as it is a nice simple smoke.

One year in a mason jar and this blend has become even more mellow than when I first opened the can. It is a beautiful smoke and ages very very well.

I'm a huge fan of the Frogs, but struggled a bit with this one. Smells terrific, but can be a bit of a challenge to keep lit if smoked fresh (my tin was pretty fresh too).
Seems to smoke best if you pack a bowl one or more days in advance. My last one sat for three days before I lit up, and it smoked like a charm; noticeably cleaner than the more Oriental-heavy versions like On the Town and Across the Pond.
Of course, letting it sit loses much of the rum aroma imparted by the toasted oak stave, but it's still there (faintly) in the background, and some nice vanilla-ish notes come through in the smoke.

I really had High hopes for this blend. It packed ok, Moisture out of the can was acceptable. Date code on my small can is 470413 , Really nice chunk of wood in the can. Stayed Lite pretty well, Didnt bite nor get too hot. Very Weak in body, Very very mild nicotine, No whiskey flavor present. It reminds me of several other MC bulk latakia blends. very dissappointed. It did smell pretty good in the can.

An absolutely wonderful little mixture from McClelland. I would recommend this for experienced English smokers and new ones alike. I am enamored by how dynamic this tobacco is. The bowl open sweet and remains so throughout the bowl, however, the sweetness looses prominence towards the bottom of the bowl and gives way to some light spiciness. Froggy's blessed cellar smells so good on might mistake it for a bourbon latakia aromatic, but there is no casing as far as I am aware. This is a great smoke as the season change and the cold weather sets in. Just wonderful!

When I came back to pipe smoking after a 20 year hiatus I wanted to avoid both strong nicotene and dull tobaccos. I am a one-pipe-a-day smoker, two at the most, and I smoke to relax and think.
My needs are very simple: a reliable inexpensive pipe (I chose a Grabow), and a reliable flavorful tobacco. Pipeworks and Wilke #10 turned out to be an excellent english blend summer smoke, but as summer waned and autumn approached it seemed a bit too mild. I read the reviews and eventually was tempted to try Frog Morton's Cellar, and it has become my favorite. I've come to enjoy latakia and this has a bunch, but the latakia doesn't overwhelm. It just gives it a woodsy smoky flavor. I don't like aromatics and don't really need them since I smoke outdoors or in my ventilated woodshop where it won't bother others, but I find that the subtle whiskey flavoring compliments this tobacco very much. I've noticed that the wife likes to come out on the back porch when I'm smoking and sit with me. This is a good sign, yes?
With most tobaccos there seem to be days when the pipe just seems bitter or "off". With Cellar this hasn't been a problem. As I say, my needs are simple. This is a fine, fine tobacco and I couldn't be happier with it.

I'm a new smoker, I've tried Mac-Baren's Mixture Modern, 4Noggin's Killington, Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding and Mississippi River, and Dunhill EMP, and a few others. I started out with Non-aromatics, and the killington's is the only non- aromatic I've smoked, and the FMC was my second tin of tobacco after the mixture modern, in comparison to it, I really enjoy FMC much more, and after the others along the way that I've mentioned, I come back to FMC and just enjoy every puff of it. I commited my David Jones pipe to it, and haven't smoked anything else out of it but FMC. It's a cool smoke, stays lit pretty well, no tongue bite at all. I like plum pudding's peppery latakia flavor, and I'd have to say that FMC tastes like it has less peppery taste to it. I am a fan of the latakia, but not a fan of Seattle Pipe Club's Mississippi River if that helps. I'm not a connoisseur, and can only compare it to what I've tried and my personal tastes. I am a fan of dark chocolate and black coffee, so if you like cream coffee and milk chocolate, then maybe this isn't the tobacco for you, however, a cup of flavored coffee sounds like it would be really good with it! Maybe I'll try that next time - oh btw, I've probably smoked about 50 grams worth of it so far, and it gets better everytime. Thanks, hope that helps.

Frog Morton Cellar happens to be the first blend with Latakia that I ever tried. After reading reviews on it for some time, I decided it was worth my while to finally give it a go. I'm exceedingly happy I did.
Every time I load my bowl with Cellar, I find something new to like about it. The very first time I tried it, I must admit I was confused due to never having tried a blend even remotely like it. I didn't like it, I didn't dislike it, I was simply perplexed at the complexity of the flavors. I remained patient, and after only the second or third bowl I was hooked on this stuff. It's still paying off and even returning dividends. The quality of the blend is immediately apparent to me: it simply looks beautiful in the tin, smells earthy and fresh, has a perfect moisture content and I can honestly say it burns more equally and cool than any other blend I've tried thus far. It's effortless for me to light and probably the easiest for me to smoke.
Cellar gave me a nice, light introduction into Latakia blends and remains one of my favorites while still surprising me with its complex flavors and scents. Just writing this review down makes me yearn for my next bowl.

What manner of magic is this? How has a mere toad bewitched me? What is this wooden charm imbued with mysterious flavorings buried beneath its black and purple ribbons? I wake in the night craving it, my mouth waters when I think about it, my wallet opens at the sight of it, and it vanishes before my very eyes more quickly than my flight to the tobacconist when it is in short supply!
My god its delicious, but I have to remind myself that it is indeed a Latakia, and one that is quite full-flavored for my pallet. No matter! I can smoke it all-day, but for me it must be done carefully for the strength of the leaf. Kept in a rotation with my less-acidic whiskey-sweet Latakias, the flavor is savoured more than if smoked in multiple consecutive bowls--and consecutive bowls of Frog Morton's Cellar are smoked often in my house. Its a must-have for me at all times. I count the hours between shipments when I run out.
If it were up to me, I would prefer a flake or cake as ribbon-cut leaves burn a bit too quickly for me, but only a fool would consider that a deal-breaker! And all the better for me if someone did. More for me to buy!
I defy you to find its equal! Hail to the frog!

Smokey rear end latakia for sure. Love it!!! Having graduated away from aromatics (very soon after joining the Men of Briar), I've been on the hunt for blends that keep me coming back. This is one.
I maybe shouldn't include JM B's Northwoods in this review but I dig the Smokey Bear herein. I love JMB's Northwoods and Countryside but I need something lighter yet flavoured still. I like the flavour of this one. The Booze element is just right by me; not too strong yet enough to remind the smoker that whiskey makes for soemthing savoury and worth while in the right blend.
This is the right blend. The War Department agrees; it makes for a pleasant smoke and Justice For All.

Excellent blend! Open the tin, smells like good ole froggy (Frog Morton) with a kick of whiskey. Perfect! Lights well, smells great while smoking, and actually tastes great. The sweet & smokey flavor of Frog Morton is present with an enhanced aroma. It seems to be a tad sweeter, nuttier, and creamier than regular Frog Morton. This is a must have tobacco, or at the very least a must try blend for all pipe smokers.

McClelland Got this one right. If you're taste buds are use to a latakia bomb....This blend probably won't do much for you. But as a cross over blend from aromatics to english blends this may be just what you're looking for. Here is a blend where you can taste the Virginia without it being overwhelmed by the Latakia. I found this one to be a little wet out of the tin, but dried out perfectly within a half hour. The burn was slow and cool and very enjoyable. I would give this one a try if you want a lighter english crossover blend.

I don't always smoke aromatics. But when I do, I want them to be like FMC. Similar in genre to SCTM from just for him, but a higher grade of tobaccos. As an English / balkan fan, I have limited time for aro's, and this one will be Occupying most of that time. A perfect gateway blend for aro fans into real tobacco. A nice change of pace for Latakia whores, such as myself. Well done Frog. Ribbit.

Opening the tin it reminds me a lot of Boylan's Creme Vanilla soda.
Smokes fine, burns cool, with a creamy mouth-feel. The Latakia shows-up about mid-bowl, albeit subdued considerably.
Overall a pleasant tobacco; however, a bit too understated. Mind you that's the point, simply not quite to my liking though. This might be a good blend for English/Balkan devotees who are looking to please others with their room-note; compromise. Personally, I don't puff to please anyone be it pipes or cigars.
I'll finish the tin quickly, I can see it fading fast once opened; however, I won't seek it out again. Mac Baren's Solent is sort of similar with a bit more Latakia upfront.

i was going home for thanksgiving so i was looking for a smoke with an exceptional "room note." i'm not a huge fan of aromatics, so this seemed like a good idea. that was the reason i chose this blend initially, but i will probably buy it again for more selfish reasons. it smokes incredibly smooth, and has a unique, pleasant taste that doesn't bite the tongue or cut the throat. i've only been into pipe smoking for a couple months, but this blend is truly unique, in a good way.
the chunk of whiskey barrel adds a nice touch. the whiskey is definitely there, but its not overwhelming. to paint a pictue of its user-friendliness, i shared a pipe with my brother-in-law, who used to smoke cigarettes but has never smoked a pipe. he was amazed by the taste of this blend and its smoothness. so, if you happen to be someone looking to get into pipe smoking, i'd recommend this blend as a good place to start.

This is a delicious blend. I "nearly" like Latakia but want it to be restrained. I tend to mix in some Kentucky Select to tone down the L. That being said, the tin aroma is very pleasant, as is the burning aroma and room note. The whiskey presence is subtle. This is not an L-bomb by any means, but it is satisfying. It is a very fine smoke, and all I can say is, "The Frog gives good Cellar!" Turfprince
P.S. I wish I had said this as nicely as robinbj; anyone who has a dream about their naked Grandma clearly has had an altogether mellow smoking experience. . . .

First off let me say this would be a 4 star rating except for the fact I am a heavy latakia lover and this excellent tobacco is just a tad bit too mild for my English, Oriental, Balkan taste. That being said, I am storing some of this after my first tin because it just begs to sit for a bit with that stave chunk in the can. This is definitely an all day smoke, very mild with a hint of latakia flavor, I do not know the latakia content but the taste seems to favor the sweetness of the whiskey yet not too overpowering to loose that Frog Morton taste - just lighter. If your thinking of moving away from full aromatics this would be a great place to start. Absolutely no bite even with my heavy touch. If you like an milder more flavored English, then this is it. A keeper for sure. After this tin I may up the stars, we'll see.

Smoking now.
The aroma from the jar is Latakia, tangy Virginia and a noticeable alcohol aroma. Mines been in a jar since 2017. It is not wet or goopy. Perfect moisture.
The Virginia and Latakia are about 50/50 maybe. The whiskey barrel stave or whatever they do to this does add a sweet and pleasant aspect to the smoke. The whiskey is noticeable in the aroma and flavor. The leathery, musty, herbal, Latakia is very apparent. The Virginia is tangy and sweet. Its all very mellow, silky smooth, no rough spots or harshness. It’s rather simple, Virginia, Latakia, whiskey and it’s delicious. The retrohale is easy and magnifies the flavors. There’s nothing mind blowing with this, it’s a good comforting simple smoke. Behaves perfect, average relights.
Sometimes I get bread, tangy, sweet, other times it’s vegetative, leather, smokey, then I get the sweet whiskey alcohol flavor. It’s all wonderful. Gets kinda bbq at the end of the bowl. What a shame this is gone.
It’s not a religious experience, it’s not that good, but if you got the money to spend get some or make friends with someone who has some because it’s worth trying. Unfortunately nothing I’ve had matches the simplicity, behavior, and flavors of this blend.

This was the first Latakia Blend I ever bought a tin of, and it turned me onto the genre. I recently found a jar, and figured I'd throw a review up.
I purchased this tin roughly 3.5 years ago, it's been stored in an oft-opened mason jar, and still requires a fair amount of drying. The jar note is very boozy and smokey. It takes a light fairly evenly, despite the rough cut, and it burns well.
Age has chilled this blend out somewhat, as I find it's not as Latakia-forward as it used to be. The booziness mostly dissipates after the first few puffs, and the almost maple-life sweetness of the stoved VAs come through. Combined with the Latakia, there is something very warm and comforting about this smoke. With the Oriental leaf absent in this one, there is very little spice. I always enjoyed this as an end-of-the-evening smoke, when I was looking for something with a rich flavor profile, but not too much complexity. There's a good reason this was such a best-seller. That said, I do prefer my Latakia blends with Oriental leaf and less (or no) of a top note.
Nicotine strength is very low.

One word: LATAKIA. Latakia is so strong in this blend, but I LOVE me some Latakia. It’s smoky, yet very tasty. I can’t really detect the whiskey too much, that’s being because I’m not a drinker. The tin note is that of a mild sweet vanilla (whiskey) top note. This is a great Latakia/Virginia blend mildly flavored with whiskey, it smokes smooth with billows of creamy white smoke in the air. I would not consider this an aromatic in the true sense of the word but an English Navy blend? I was given some of this at my pipe club from a few friends of mine and it will be missed. Another one that if I had known McClelland was shutting their doors would have bought. Probably better I did not know as I would have gone bankrupt buying everything come to think of it.

When I started smoking a pipe just over two years ago, I did the typical aromatics only thing for a long while until I ran across something that said FMC was a great "gateway" blend into the English style blends. So I gave it a try and hated it right away. I was put off by what I thought was a leather and soap taste. At the time I didn't realize that my very inexperienced palate was to blame. I let it sit on the shelf for a couple weeks and tried it again...I fell in love with it about midway through the bowl. Long story short, it became my favorite blend and would barely venture out to smoke anything else. So, on to the problem. McClelland has shut down and well... no more FMC... I am crushed by the loss of this great blend. So if anyone knows of a blend that comes even slightly close to this one... I'd be willing to give it a try. FMC will be missed dearly...

Froggy Cellar was my first experience with a whiskey topped tobacco and honestly it's still one of the best. The latakia does what latakia does and adds a bit of sharpness and a little bitterness. The whiskey top is subtle enough that it's present but doesn't overwhelm the flavors of the tobacco. I also seem to notice just a hint of saltiness when I smoke. I thought maybe it was from something I ate before I smoked it but it's definitely there and it's not at all off putting. In fact it might be one the reasons I prefer this over other whiskey tobaccoes I've tried. It is a bit damp and should be dried for a bit before packing the pipe.

This "aromatic" english is mellow and tasty. The whiskey barrel stave imparts a subtle sweet whiskey note that never dominates the bowl, but sits in the mix delightfully only enough to gently sweeten the blend. The sweetness does not in any way resemble the sugary sweet toppings that are applied to aromatics. I did have pockets of more sweetness during the smoke, which I found interesting.
The Cyprian Latakia is smoky, woody, and earthy, complimenting the whiskey beautifully in the same way that peat smoke rounds out a glass of scotch, while never dominating the bowl, either. Towards the bottom of the bowl, I started to get a slight bit of the more peppery smoke from the Latakia, but nothing harsh by any means. The Virginias are stoved and musty, with some darker hay notes popping in here and there to round out this blend.
Will need just a little bit of extra dry time, since Mcclelland blends seem to retain moisture a bit more than others. The ribbon cut is more of a chunky cut, but packs well and lights well. It also smoked very well with only a few relights, leaving a hint of moisture in the bowl. The nicotine hit is pretty mild. Overall, a great mild english, or a great gateway for the new or interested English smoker.

Full of sweet and smokey Cyprian latakia, Virginias gently add a dry grassy note and plenty of dried fruit. The Frog’s whiskey selection is choice and along with a drop of vanilla enhances the richness of the blend without sublimating the tobaccos too much. Can be a bit flat at times, so pairing with a fine burbon may be in order. Needs a little dry time and requires average relights. Burns on the cool side. Room note is very pleasant. The piece of barrel in the tin is a nice touch and lends to it’s exceptional aging abilities so don’t be without a few tins in your cellar.

This is my immediate favorite among the FM series. I love the very lightly used whiskey topping. It blends terrifically with the modest smokiness of the latakia, and also complements the natural sweetness of the virginia. I don't even mind that this is more of an aromatic smoke. Its smooth, burns well, and hasn't ever bitten me. I'm not sure the wooden cube in the tin is actually cut from a whiskey barrel stave, but it's a unique and neat touch by McClelland nonetheless. Out of the five blends, this will probably be the only one I reorder in the future. Well, maybe Across the Pond also, depending on availability. Very nicely done!

I bought this one to smoke at New Years Eve 2016. The tin was new and just before midnight i filled up a bowl in my Savinelli New Art 122 (also bought to celebrate). What a disapointment. No taste at all. This was after reading about this blend for a few months and really looking forward to try it. But why the heck was people so excited about this one? Probably the biggest disappointment in my pipe life so far. I put the tobacco in a mason jar and wondered what to do with such crap.
About 8-9 months later, I was sitting in my chair, thinking about what to smoke today. I found this tobacco in its jar in my cabinet. "Need to get rid of this" I was thinking and filled up a bowl. The next hour would be the best pipe moment in my life. It was totally another flavour than at New Years Eve. It was so tasteful and a perfect combination of all the components. I was sitting on my balcony just smiling.
I find so many different tastes in this. Whiskey of course with much sugar. From time to time I say to myself it tastes a little like banana. And it is all the way to the bottom. If you like sweet blends or blends that are not similiar to anything else, try this one, and you will understand why so many love it. But I recommend you to cellar it for a year or longer for the best experience.
Greetings to the pipe community from Sweden.

UPDATE 5/21/18 This is a truly special tobacco. As I come back to it roughly a year after I tried it for the first time I only realize how special this blend really is.This is a mild Balkan with the whiskey flavoring and barrel stave support the traditional Balkan flavors and McClelland VA’s in a way that I would say all toppings SHOULD support the natural tobaccos’s. This has that subtle malty flavor the I love in Balkans and the whiskey supports that flavoring. The stoved red VA adds an earthy quality to the sweet VA’s and Latakia. I find that I appreciate thise even more now with age both to the tobacco and to my preferences. I started thinking I was an aromatic smoker...then I was convinced I was an English, leaning toward Balkan blends. Then I smoked Frog Morton Cellar. The wold has changed. I feel like Paul of Tarsus after he went blind and finally awoke and saw he light! This tobacco really lives up to the hype. The stave in the can i akin to the wheel to the Neanderthal. I have never smoked a bowl that I wanted to never end, this was it... and I went through a tin of it prior to this review. The blend is amazing. The Latakia is present but not overwhelming. The Virginia's are present and subtle, well balanced. The flavor from that little piece of wood delivers a vanilla hint along with some bourbon/caramel. This is the way to enjoy tobacco. Bravo McClelland.

This blend gets better each time I smoke it. It's rich, creamy, and sticky. It reminds me of whiskey leather, dark barns, oak, and grand old libraries. Prunes and chocolate. Not as luxurious as And So To Bed, and not quite as balanced as Frog Morton On The Town.

One of my favorites! Although classified as an aromatic, it is more of a “light aromatic.”
(Note: like many people, I started off smoking aromatics, but I find I no longer enjoy them. Too sweet and goopy for me. “Light” aromatics are as far as I go these days).
Really no detectable casing. The use of a whiskey stave is nothing short of ingenious, since it adds sweetness and flavor on a very mild level, allowing the natural flavors and taste of the Virginias and Latakia to do their own thing. I find this blend has a delightful room note and wonderful flavor. Compared to other Latakia blends I've tried, the Latakia has a softer presence in this blend, despite a pleasant woodsy tin note. The standout, imho, are the Virginias, which add a sweetness and flavor all their own. This is more of a chunky ribbon than a spun ribbon, and there is quite a bit of moisture, but I find it smokes very well without any drying.
If I can muster the patience to cellar some of this, I'm guessing it will really shine. I agree with other reviews that consider this a crossover between a mild English and a light aromatic. It reminds me a bit of Syrian Star, but a tad sweeter and richer due to the whiskey stave. I heartily recommend this blend.

again, frog morton for me has not been my favorite, although i will continue to try them. very smooth blends, light, and this is no exception. you get a smooth very mellow latakia with a casing of sweetness, from the burbon infusion. i wont really be back to this one anytime soon. it was a well made tobacco but just not my thing, id rather try another frog marton before this one again.

What can be said about Frog Morton Cellar that has not already been said. I will make this short and to the point. It is a very mild English blend with phenomenal taste. It is pretty much middle of the road on everything except strength. It burns cool, but fairly quickly and has an absolutely wonderful room note that, in my opinion, beats out most aromatic blends that I have tried. I am a Frog Morton lover in general, but the Original, On the Town, and Cellar are my favorites of the blend with Cellar first, On the Town second and Frog on a Log third. In my opinion, on the bayou and across the pond leave something to be desired. With all that said, each one has their own distinct characteristic and therefore obviously have their place on the market.
Cellar has just the right amount of whiskey flavored imparted to the blend that it is not overpowering, yet is absolutely there. I think it could have a fuller taste in my opinion which would knock it completely out of the park, but that is a minor complaint for an overall superb blend. This would be my top choice to recommend to others who are wanting to get into mild English and Latakia blends. I don't think you can go wrong in that area.
Lastly, in my opinion this would be one of the six Desert Island blends for me. It is an excellent change of pace and mild tobacco when compared to my others which are Penzance, H&H Anniversary Kake, Dunbar, Dunhill Flake and Orlik Golden Sliced. Cellar is well worth the try and I would be surprised if you don't come away either loving the blend or saying that it is worth being in your rotation in some capacity.

One of the first blends I tried after getting back into Pipe Smoking after 20 years, and I have not looked back. I love the tin note. The charring light is sweet and aromatic. I love the top, middle, and bottom of the bowl. No matter what other blends I try, I keep coming back to FMC. Over the past year, I have been trying many tobaccos, but I always enjoy this the most. Tangy, a little spicy, and smoky. No bite ever. Definitely an all day blend. I'll keep several tins on hand as long as it is available. I do wonder- Why no bulk?
Latakia and sweet VA's throughout along with the subtle flavor of whisky. I have also tried McClelland's Stave Aged Virginia 35, which I like, but it is not as complex and rich as FMC. Ditto the other Frog Morton's.
Highly recommended.

When I came back to pipe smoking after a 20 year hiatus I wanted to avoid both strong nicotine and dull tobaccos. I am a one or two -pipe-a-day smoker and I smoke to relax and think.
I enjoy latakia in small amounts and this has a bunch, but the Virginia tobacco really rounds out and complements the latakia It has a pleassant woodsy smoky flavor. No nicotine hit worth mentioning. The tin note is a little like dark molasses. I've noticed that the wife likes to come out on the back porch when I'm smoking and sit with me. This is a good sign, yes?
With most tobaccos there seem to be days when the pipe just seems bitter or "off". With Cellar this hasn't been a problem. I have noticed that it never completely dries out, even if I leave the lid off overnight, so it must have something added. This is a fine, fine tobacco and I couldn't be happier with it. Lately it has gotten expensive so I haven't ordered any. Here's hoping the price comes down soon.
May, 2017 The price came down so I ordered a tin. I can confirm that this is very good stuff. It is about the same mildness as Carter Hall, the other tobacco in my small rotation. It is good codger tobacco with terrific flavor. For me, highest ratings.
I just found out that McClelland has gone belly up and this will not be available. Too bad. I'm really going to miss it.

I was a customer in one of Columbus' smoke shops when this series of blends came on the market and all were opened and offered for sampling. I tried them all but didn't care for them as English blends for the following reasons: they were too dark, they were too sweet, they were too moist and they seemed over processed. For these reasons I passed on them in favor of blends that smoked more "cleanly". This last Christmas I sat next to a person at a party who was smoking FM's Cellar and it seemed interesting in aroma, though, still quite dark. Then I remembered that I had bought a box of tinned tobaccos from a guy at the 2016 NASPC show and a tin of FM's Cellar was in it. I opened the tin and discovered a dark and fragrant English blend with a chunk of an oak whisky barrel in it. The blend smoked with a slight aroma that I decided was a little whisky-like and I liked it. On the other hand, I'm with a minority of reviewers who felt that it's overall strength was a little lacking. One of the notable aspects of this blend is that it smoked consistently down the bowl and was at its best in the bottom third - most unusual. So, though a moderately pleasant smoke, I won't be hoarding this blend but can give it three stars for a good effort.

The Frog Morton series is very delicious set of mild English blends. When the tin is 1st opened the blend has a creamy whiskey taste. Which unfortunately overpowers the the tobacco flavors. But fear not after sitting in the tin for a week it mellows out and the traditional FM sweetness comes through. Now the boring stuff...lights fairly easily and stay lit but isn't a fast burner. Doesn't bite.

This is a tobacco searching for an identity. Is it an English or is it an Aromatic?? Yes it is good and lots of flavor but almost too much flavor for an English and perhaps not quite enough for an aromatic. I like it and I smoke it but between this and standard Frog Morton....I give a tip of my hat to Frog Morton. Celler is good, don't get me wrong but I personally like the flavor of Frog Morton just a bit more and the flavor really comes and goes quickly. I am a sucker for sweet wood smoke flavor and I get more of that with Frog Morton, almost as much as from Boswell Northwoods than the Celler blend gives me. You do get nice sweet flavor but not much of the sweet wood smoke flavor I prefer. This is a great blend as you can see by the many positive reviews and I don't think many experienced smokers would not like this blend.

Well, it has been nearly 9 months since I last acquired a new tobacco and therefore about 9 months since my last review. So let's jump right back into it!
Having tried 'Bayou' and the original Frog Morton, every time I brought those up with other pipe smokers this blend always came up. Their suggestion was always along the line of "You have to try it!", so I have.
Now I understand their enthusiasm. This blend straddles the line between English and Aromatic, bringing out the best in both categories. Unlike many aromatics that can sometimes come across as acrid from being too heavily cased, this blend brings that whiskey flavor to the forefront for about the first half of the bowl. Its a largely caramel/butterscotch/vanilla flavor, backed up by a woodiness. Behind that, and later in the forefront, is the wonderful and typically English tobacco tastes. Spicy Latakia, and musky/smoky stoved Virginia.
The room note is also notably better than many English blends to non-smokers, that whiskey character giving it a rather pleasant tinge.
Overall, this is a truly exceptional blend that I'd recommend to any smoker. New or old, sweet-toothed or savory crazy.

The tin aroma is a mix of the typical McClelland ketchup note (which, as usual, disappears when smoking it) and the sweetness of the whisky flavour (with the gift of a barrel piece inside the tin). Smoking it, we have an original, interesting EM but to me is a little bit too mild in strength. 3,5/5 in my personal rating system.

One of the most creamy Latakia blends that I have smoked. Very tasty with a subtle note that I can't put my finger on. As another fellow reviewer noted, there appears to be some flavored black Cavendish in this blend. It is most notable when the tobacco has been removed from it's tin and allowed to breath. Once again, I am at a loss for specifics. It is just a pinch and reminds me of some of the Latakia aromatic blends of the 50's. No real whiskey taste though, yet the stave cube is a novel touch( might use it to rehydrate other whiskey blends). Creamy, Smokey, and Sweet best describe this blend. Cheers.

This is pretty good tobacco. Read lots about it and decided to give it a try. It is difficult to tell what it is. It is a Virginia/Latakia, but it is very mild and reminds me of a Burley flavored with Latakia. It lacks the full flavor of Early Morning Pipe and/or Nightcap. Sort of reminds me of Carter Hall on steroids. It is a very pleasant smoke and I have been enjoying a bowl each day.

Far to weak!! There is no power no full tobacco flavour known by many english mixtures. The tobaccos in the tin are most black but i do not believe that is all latakia. A hbig portion black cavendish seems to thrown in here. And the virginias are to mild to shine through. So it is a boring semy sweet mixture with hints of chlorine due to the peaty malt and a little campfire. Not satisfying smoke

I'm a McClelland fan and I feel like you need to be to enjoy the Frogs. The tin aroma is smoky, barbecue, and whiskey with the slight ketchup I expect from most things McClelland.
It's an easy english blend to get into if you're new to them. The aftertaste is an oaky flavor that's very pleasant. It's a flavorful blend and smokes dry. If you puff too quickly it'll bite.
It's a mild to medium room note, probably only pleasing to me, but that's ok.

The initial tin note enticed me for the bowl soon to come. The aroma of whiskey is present in the tin note but recedes to mild latakia and sweet virginias when lit. As is often noted this blend is a great transition blend for those aromatic pipers looking to try an English blend.
Tin moisture was mostly on point and smokes relative dry depending on the pipe and smoker. Smokes cool and doesn't bite.
I recommend Frog Morton's Cellar to those looking for something different, whether your an curious aromatic smoker or an affirmed English lover.

This isn't bad, but I was disappointed. Been debating a Frog Morton's for a while, but where I buy from only carried the larger tins. Finally decided to go for it, and since this was listed as an English blend which lately is all I smoke, I gave it a shot. It's pretty good, but, not what I was expecting. The added whiskey flavour makes it much more like an aromatic than an English blend to me, and as much as I like the smell, the taste of burnt flavours doesn't do it for me. Wishing I grabbed the Craftsbury Series instead. I'm not saying it's a bad blend, just, if you aren't into aromatic/flavoured blends, this should be passed on.

Man is this a good tobacco. I completely agree with TXBulldog's description. The smell upon opening the tin is wonderful -- the latakia is not overwhelming and the aroma is so pleasant you might mistake this as an aramotic. In fact, when it burns, it smells and tastes like a well balanced combination of a light aromatic and an english blend. It burns very nice to the end -- I was surprised on how long this smoked. The taste and flavor is just right -- if Dunhill (another great tobacco) overpowers you, this would be a great substitute.

I have added this to the below on 11/13/15. Having just finished my 3rd tin, I have to say that this blend is rapidly becoming my favorite. It never seems to bite and the taste is consistent. Very smooth and mild but still with sufficient flavor to keep me from getting bored. I have changed my rating to "Highly Recommended".
After reading the reviews here, I decided to buy a tin and, having just bought several more tins, I felt ready to give my thoughts. I tend to enjoy Westminster by Pease, along with regular Frog Morton and Frog OOT. I had a pretty good idea what to expect in this new to me FM variant.....sweet and smoky. Well, the sweet is there but not much in the way of a smoky taste. I felt like I already have the Englih blends handled and was looking for something different. FMC seems to have fit that need quite well. Please read the following with an awareness that I can only talk about how this tobacco and my senses combined for a smoking pleasure.
I usually want a bit of complexity and read that FMC has some complexity as you get further into a bowl. I never found that. What I did find was a blend that matches well with my personal chemistry! It had a nice sweetness from beginning to end. Every now and then, I could taste a bit of the latakia but that was very much in the background. It was the sweetness that dominated and I really enjoyed the bourbon additive. This, at least for me, was a very mild smoke and I consider it to be my best choice for a midday pipe. Considering what I was looking, Cellar is a winner. If you're looking for a typical English blend where the latakia and other orientals lead, you're going to have to look elsewhere.

I got my first tin of Frog Morton's Cellar in the mail when I was a sophomore in college, but for whatever reason I did not have an opportunity to smoke it for about two weeks. I opened the tin and smelled what is easily the best smelling tobacco I have ever smelled. The aroma of the deep, smoky latakia that blended perfectly with rich, sweet, and whisky laden red and yellow Virginias made those two weeks agony. When I smoked FMC for the first time, it did not disappoint! The latakia and Virginias coalesced just as perfectly as the tin note suggested they would, and the hint of whisky tied it all together. This impeccable blend greets every pipe with a Han Solo-esque, "I'll take it from here," and then delivers. I simply cannot say enough about Frog Morton's Cellar. It is my favorite smoke by a landslide! What is more, the little collection of whisky stave cubes that you accumulate in your drawer after a few tins is an added bonus.

When I first bought this tobacco, a part of my first TAD(a hodgepodge assortment of tobaccos), I was 3 months into pipe smoking and enjoyed mostly aromatics. This tobacco was my crossover, the blend that broke the barrier and opened the door to English blends, and eventually others.
The tin-note is rich, smoky and sweet, with the unmistakable scent of a good, aged whiskey. The tobacco does come quite moist and requires drying time for the best results. The cut is typical McClelland- chunky ribbon- yet, it packs easily. The charring light greets you primarily with the smokiness of the latakia and a promise of the sweetness to come. This tobacco is extraordinarily SMOOTH. As the bowl progresses you get rich and smooth smoke, a full flavored tobacco with a mild to medium body, satisfying yet not overwhelming. The flavor you get is consistent from beginning to end- the sweetness from the Virginia and smokiness from the latakia, combined with the whiskey notes and a slight vanilla note can be detected as well. This is a sweet blend, but not in a cloying aromatic sort of way. This could easily be smoked several times a day. It's just darn good.

This is on my top 5 favorite pipe tobaccos. This is for a latakia lover and brings a little bit to aromatic lovers. This is a great latakia smokey blend but has a little complexity by adding a whiskey flavor. I am a little disappointed being a bourbon lover that the whiskey flavor is not stronger.
This is a great smoke but causes a little tongue bite. Still worth checking out.

This is the blend that got me to take the pipe up again after a 35 year hiatus. The description got me interested, so I said what the hell and stuffed a cob full and gave it a try. Wow, I've been missing this? I worked through the tin over the next two weeks (I'm just a one bowl a day guy) and the magic never left. Nice tin note, OK room note (not sure, pipe is strictly relegated to the outdoors), nice mild taste and what I really like is the very pleasant aftertaste it leaves. There are a lot of very positive reviews here with good reason. This will be a regular for me eventually. Right now I'm having fun exploring all the tobaccos out there. Not sure that barrel stave does anything though.

My second attempt at a review - from a novice pipe smoker.
I bought this tin because I've found that I enjoy smoking English blends and this was one of those that are quite highly rated. I ordered this at the same time I bought McClelland's Legends (a great strong English in my opinion). I opened the tin and left the top off for a few hours before I smoked this. This was a milder smoke, similar to what I've smoked so far and the flavor was quite pleasant. Because I'm a novice, I don't know if this is a big deal to most smokers but; the difference to me between a good smoke and a great one is a good smoke tastes good from beginning to end but a great smoke gets better the deeper you go into the bowl and leaves you feeling like you want more. This is a great smoke.

I am new to pipe smoking and Frog Morton's cellar is my first name brand smoke. Up untill purchasing it, I had been "enjoying" the random store blends from my local shop. But by venturing out a little further away, I was able to grab a tin of this fantastic blend. The tin note had a smokey spice scent with a hint of bourbon. I smoked it fresh out of the tin, and had no issues with initial light or with the bowl going out on me. So the moisture content sems to be just right. It really seems to enhance my beverage of choice while smoking it, be it coffee or whiskey or a combination of the two on a weekend. My wife really likes the room note or rather the beard note that hangs on to me afterwards. All in all I am really happy with this blend and intend to keep it in my rotation while I explore all the other tobaccos out there.

Nothing noteworthy about this blend. I like the whole series of Frog's, and this one is good like the rest. Easy to get along with, with volumes of smoke. Packs and lights easy too. However, until proven otherwise, I do not think that chunk of burnt oak is from a real barrel stave.

This is the second blend I've tried in the FM line, the first being FMATP which I found to be overly sweet with out much of a Lat hit. Now comes Cellar, not to sweet but there is a sweetness in the background. The Lat shines in this blend and seems to be enhanced by the additional whiskey. I can't seem to get enough, when I finish a bowl I just want more. But isn't that why we smoke to find a blend that just hits all the marks and keeps you going back for more? This will be a mainstay in my stable. I Could go on about FMC but it's all been said more eloquent persons than myself so I'll leave it at that. If you've been on the fence with this this one, jump down and dip your foot in the pond. You won't be disappointed. I remain your Brother in Smoke. 4 Stars

I tried this blend at the recommendation of an employee of my favorite store (my local Tinder Box). I normally don't take this employee's advice because I'm more of an aromatic guy and he prefers the heavy english blends that taste like you're smoking leather furniture. However, knowing that I like bourbon, he drew my attention to the whiskey barrel piece in the tin. I was intrigued. He let me try a bowl from his tin and I was hooked. I find this blend to be sweet, tangy, smokey, and a little nutty. The whiskey flavoring seems natural and not cased on. I immediately bought a 100g tin and then a 50g tin 2 weeks later. (I was afraid of running out.) I have enjoyed this tobacco with coffee, bourbon, Irish whiskey, and even sweet tea. What's also nice is the room note. I can smoke this in the car with my fiancé riding with me and she enjoys the scent. This is a must try blend!

Cellar is an interesting English variation. Latakia dominates. That's one of the important ingredients of English style tobaccos. In a classic English Latakia is combined with Orientals and some Virginia. Cellar just has Latakia and Virginia with a light dose of whisky added. It makes for a mild, tasty smoke. An interesting variation. I give it a 3.

This is a very good smoke and I was quite pleased with it. I did not notice any tin note when I first opened it, but I was sold when my local tobacconist told me that it was aged with a block from a whiskey barrel. The smoke was extremely pleasant and I found it to be a pleasant blend of english and latkia. The smoke was pleasant and sweet but not too sweet.
I will say that I mixed what was left of this blend with Frog Morton's On The Bayou (another great smoke) because I liked both and figured that I would like them both together. However I did not like this Frankensteinish blend of these to tobaccos. The perique from the On the Bayou did not mix well with the small portion left in the tin of Cellar that was left over, but i digress.

This blend tastes more Aromatic than English and it rides that line quite well. It has the flavors of an English blend with a rather mild intensity. That said, I would recommend this for my aromatic friends more than English lovers.
If you're accustomed to Balkan, English, and Latakia blends then you'll find this immensely weak, but tasty nonetheless. One thing it has going for it is consistency of flavor. I suppose it is, in that way, a true English.
Although I must say that it's lack of intensity makes me very reticent to trying other Frog Morton blends.

I am new to piping, so this review may not be as informative to those of you who have been at this for a long time.
Tin Impressions: The art on these tins is really incredible. Mr. Frog Morton makes you really anticipate what the tobacco is going to be like by his scenery. The art sort of takes you back to the days when pipes were in their popularity. The tin-note is also very robust, manly, and pleasant. Many people say it smells vinegary/ketchup-like, but I say it smells like a bag of Wild Bill's Beef Jerky. That's what I smell when I stick my nose in the tin. Either way, the tin-note does not carry over to the taste while smoking it.
Smoking Impression: The first few draws tastes like sucking whiskey through a straw. It is very powerful in the beginning (perhaps too powerful?), but mellows out to blend in with everything else after the initial draws. I find everything to finally be perfectly blended when you get half-way through the bowl.
Room-Note: I smoked this around a friend of mine, and I will suffice it to say that he stuck close by the entire time. So, it does have a rather pleasant smell, at least to us it did!
Warnings: The whiskey stave (the block of wood in the tin) is more for athsetics than flavoring, I believe. And, after smoking Cellar, your pipe will be gunked up really bad. So, expect a long cleaning process afterwards!

Well what can I say that hasn't already been said... This is the bees knees. An everyday smoke all day. The smell of the tin, pouch, can, whatever is heavenly. I have to stop myself from just smelling it and get to puffing it. The wooden stave added in is a nice touch. It sits on the edge of aromatic and english. I can't get enough. Not a lat bomb but a nice mellow smokiness with some sweet sweet whisky.

I normally smoke straight English blends. I decided to take a chance on this based on some reviews. This blend in not overly strong and really reminds me of a Balkan blend. The whiskey or sucralose, cannot really distinguish the topping, is not overly strong and adds just the right amoubt of sweetness to the tabacky. Very enjoyable blend. Will be ordering another tin of this for certain. No tongue bite is a nice plus!

This is a case of where many components come together to make something different altogether and unique. Whiskey does interesting things to tobacco, like amplify sweetness in VAs and mellow Latakia so that it isn't so overpowering. In this blend all the flavors meld into a completely different profile not quite English, but not quite aromatic either. A true AromEnglish blend for sure and bound to be loved by lovers of both alike.

I've smoked two bowls now and it's quickly become one of my favorites. I've liked the original Frog Morton (one of the better English blends) since I first picked up the pipe and I wasn't sure what to expect out of an aromatic Frog Morton. It's got a sweet-ish whiskey flavoring, but it's not sickly sweet at all, almost like a sweet-tea flavor. The tin aroma is absolutely delightful, the room note is pleasant (wifey approved!), it's super easy to light, and it burns nicely.
I'm going to have to pick up some more of this stuff and jar it for a while. Will be interesting to see how it changes with some age.

This is nice. Out of the tin I let it dry for a little more than an hour. This is my normal practice with McClelland products. After the charring light it produced nice, creamy, voluminous smoke. The smokey flavor is present but the sweet Virginia in this blend comes through just right. I can buy the whiskey flavoring and believe it works wonderfully with the heavier latakia that is present. I get carmel undertones that play off that aged oak, whiskey character.
This one should be sipped, so it doesn't turn acrid, which I believe could happen if pushed. If you aren't a huge latakia fan... This might turn you, it's pleasantly sweet, but still has that English character.

Frog mortons cellar was a true hit for me. The smell of the tobacco of the tin is very much like smelling a good whiskey. Packing the tobacco was very easy and really smoked well no problems keeping this lit using a false light and relight technique. Now the smoke was a taste of good smoked whiskey, and it was felt without any bite. This blend is solid in my book and I will continue to smoke this in my rotation.

This week I have been binging on English blends, and Frog Morton cellar has been the clear winner. Lots of reviews already, but here are my notes. Light and steady Latakia flavor, never overpowers and smooth, creamy smoke has no bite. Slight peppery feeling in mouth, and a light scent through the nose. 100% chance I will order more of this immediately.

Smooth, Nutty with a hidden punch. I will compare this with the flagship Morton (My favorite blend). They are very similar, but the cellar (a piece of whiskey barrel) adds a unique spice to the taste. A variation but not an improvement. Personally, my advice is to buy the original. If you love it (I think you will) then buy each of the variations. They will provide some fun comparison.

While some label this a "crossover" blend, I consider this an aromatic tobacco.
The tin note is sweet and smokey. The darkness of the tin may be misleading because this is a very tame and mild blend. There a little bit of smokiness, and decent amount of sweetness and the toppings. It smokes cool and usually burns leaving no dottle.
My tastebuds want something with more umph so I don't think I'll buy this again. I did find FM On the Bayou more intriguing than this blend though. The perique adds a nice dimension to the smoke that isn't present here.
There are three blends that come to mind when talking "English" with a topping. This, SG Perfection and Sutliff Kasimir. Among the three, I find Kasimir to be the best.
This tobacco is readily available so you should be able to give it a shot. It's just not for me.

For someone who has never cared much for whiskey flavored blends, I sure have been smoking a lot of them lately. I wanted to give this one a try because everyone seems to say that it is the best FM blend. As much as I loved Across the Pond, I had to take this feedback to heart and pick up a can of Cellar. Upon opening the tin, the smell of whiskey was evident, along with a gentle smokiness from the Latakia and a sweetness provided by the natural tobacco.
I'm not going to tell you about the complexities of this blend because frankly there really wasn't any. It packed and lit fine while still fresh from the tin. It produced a lot of creamy smoke without much effort. It's a straight-forward whiskey blend with a touch of Latakia. I'm not a Latakiaphile, but I honestly thought it could have used a bit more in the mix. It was a little hard to find with the already present smokiness of the whiskey flavoring. It remained consistent throughout the bowl and never got hot or bitter. That alone warrants 3 stars to me.
All in all, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a change of pace from their regular English blends, and it would be perfect for the aromatic smoker who would like to venture into English territory. However, I really didn't see the hype associated with this blend, as there are other whiskey flavored tobaccos (without Latakia, however) that are just as good if not a bit better. I honestly prefer Across the Pond way more than this one and find myself craving it. I gave this BARELY 3 stars, simply because it burnt flawlessly and it does it's job well as an English/Aro crossover. I'll stick to Across the Pond for an everyday FM blend for now.

My #1 Tobacco.
I cannot get enough of this stuff. Super mellow, great flavor, clean burning, and no bad remarks. The past 3 times I've been to my local tobacco shop I've bought tins of this, rather then buy anything else, it's perfect. I'm hooked. I'm trying to buy new blends when i go to the shop, however this is now impossible since I MUST buy this every time they have it in stock.
The room note with this blend is amazing, my wife loves it. When friends come over they are astounded at how pleasant the the room note is.

Well, if you like the original Frog Morton, you will like this one too. Personally I am torn between finding it light but smooth and pleasant some times, and vapid and gimmickly flavored/artificial other times.
Yes, the block of oak in the tin is a gimmick. But yes, it also DOES impart flavour: you can clearly feel some oakiness and extra sweetness (bourbon whiskey?) in the smoke.
Overall, it IS Frog Morton, but with a bit less meat on its bones and more "makeup". In some pipes it is flavorful, in others it's dull and bland. What is sure is that, even if never completely convincing and satisfying, it's a very easy and pleasant smoke.
The Frog Morton line is a bit infuriating to me: I have never found tobaccos which are so full of "faults" for my taste... but which I keep returning to regularly. Easy to smoke and likeable, but also easy to forget. Some sort of love/hate (well, no, not hate... just scepticism) relationship. Anyway, unique blends, that's for sure.

This is a wonderful pipe tobacco. A combination of virginias and latakia blended together seamlessly, with a slight topping of whisky that gives just a hint of 'something else' and adds to the expert blending. A pleasure to smoke. Smooth and full of flavor and smells, nothing overpowering. Strength is mild to medium.
Presented in an attractive tin with a piece of whisky barrel inside, this is pipe tobacco that is a pleasure to smoke.

Disclosure: I only smoke bent pipes outdoors (yes, the wife objects to indoor smoking) and cannot speak to "room note" as such but the aroma from the burning tobacco hitting my nostrils is what I enjoy the most about pipe smoking.
This stuff has grown on me faster than a weed in a rainy spring. When I first tried it I was unimpressed. My reaction was, where is the beef? But every time I smoke it I like it more and it has become one of my favorites. I find it semi-sweet and very mellow but satisfying in taste and aroma. I have been known to sprinkle spirits on pipe tobacco so to me the whisky barrel cube in the tin is not a gimmick as some may think. The latakia comes across sort of in disguise and without dominating the blend, which is another plus in my book. McClelland has hit a home run with this blend as far as I am concerned.

My favorite non aromatic. Sure to be labeled as a classic this blend is a delight to smoke. It was the tobacco that encouraged me to try more non aromatics and the first Latikia that I fell in love with. The best way that I know to describe this is a tobacco with depth and charm. This is one that I always keep in stock because it is perfect for all occasions. If you are a fan of aromatics but looking to change over I highly recommend this blend.,

Baaah! I really thought i was going to love this one. Not so. I love the other FM's except on the town. The chunk of wood is cute and certainly imparts it's flavour well. But it's too light, thin even and the plonk they have used ends up being the main taste. Gets bitter towards the end. Next.

My first Frog Morton tobacco... Meh. It's okay. A solid, if not remarkable blend. A suitable canvas for the bourbon aromas which have permeated the leaf.
You notice the aroma right away... Oaky, vanilla, caramelly. The scent translates nicely into the bowl, especially upon lighting. Marries well with the Latakia, but this seems reasonable, given the generic profile of the blend.
All in all, a pleasant, if forgettable, smoke for this lover of true English blends. I think I'd rather just have a solid English blend with a nice glass of any number of top-shelf bourbons.
A good gateway blend for those switching from aromatics or non-lat tobaccoes, but not for me.

At first I wasn't sure what to think about this tobacco. The aroma from the tin is as you would expect, yet very peculiar; the "new shoes" smell from the latakia, and sweet whiskey. The flavour is not as jarring as the smell, it is very enjoyable and smooth. I do find it tends to want to leap out of the pipe while smoking, but otherwise burns consistently and is very cool in the mouth. Overall, it is definitely different and recommended if you love latakia or are looking to switch from aromatics to English blends.

Rarely (if ever) have I taken such an instant liking to a blend.I believe most Aromatic and English lovers will find an aspect to like here. (The stave cube from my first tin has found a home in my second, now that there's room). Only downside of this one for me is that I can't buy a pound drum of it at a time..... truly a treat IMHO. Very smooth tobacco with a hint of smoky whiskey that is not overwhelming. Leaves a sweet whiskey flavor on the back of the tongue for a while that is surprisingly pleasant. For someone who is getting away from aromatic's, this should be at the top of your list! The tin note is very nice, especially with the staved cube from a charred whiskey barrel in the tin.

Imagine mixing a fine sweet whiskey, a bit of bakers spices, and Baileys Irish cream together. Them allow the concoction to absorb the first rising whiffs of smoke from fruit wood campfire and you have Frog in his Cellar.
By God is this a wonderful smoke! From the sweet cream and almost yuletide like spice of those first few sips, through to the more robust virginia and latakia combo and then finishing in a dance of whiskey and Irish cream.. Its almost like a three course meal.
A nice bit of nicotine but not too strong at all and you're in heaven. You can go all night with the frog and still want more by daybreak. In fact this blend will find its home in one of my deeper briars as it is a rare treat to find anything in life where a little is good and a lot is better.
Even now I find my tongue is aching for the taste. Let your pipe sit and smell the bowl and try to convince yourself that you didn't just smoke Baileys Irish Cream! Love it.

This is a smooth blend and one that I would call an aromatic. The flavors are whiskey, vanilla and smoky latakia. This smokes cool, without bite and that for me, is an unusual trait for an aero. I feel the blend has a bitter background flavor but a flavorful sweet/sour top note. I can see why many people would like this blend ,but for me , I just have a personal problem with the taste of latakia and vanilla , but this is very well done, I'm thinking Sillems Black in style (slight difference in taste) or 4N's Bald Headed Teacher but without the burley or maybe McC's Stave aged Virginia 35 Ribbon with Latakie forward rather than Virginia. Anyway, I'll give this 3 stars, which is very high for me with any Latakia/ vanilla blend .

I must say that this is a great addition to the FM series. The various tobaccos come together quite nicely leaving one to have another bowl straight away. The only fault I have with this blend is that it is quite moist right out of the tin, definitely needs some drying time if this irks you. Like the others in the FM series, I wish I could get these in bulk. Highly recommended.

I'm fairly new to pipe tobacco as I'm transitioning from smoking cigars to more pipes as of late. Being a cigar guy might be why I've immediately taken a liking to latakia blends. This is the first of the Frog Morton blends I've tried and I must say I enjoy it very much. I would call this far from an aromatic myself...I can smell a bit of the whiskey scent in the tin but get none of the flavor or aroma once burning. This one is quite a bit lighter than my other favorite Latakia blend (Nightcap) so I find myself reaching for this tin more often as it doesn't burn out my palate like Nightcap sometimes can. I love the lingering aftertaste after finishing a bowl.

Maybe it's my love of Virginias or maybe I simply don't have the nuanced palate to appreciate this blend, but Frog Morton's Cellar hit me wrong from the start. The smoky bbq aroma of the tobacco offended me at the tin opening and went downhill from there. It tasted like wood and dirt from the first light and just got more pronounced further down the bowl. I thought I may not like Latakia but seasoned smokers have posted how it's presence is light to nonexistent. Whatever it is, I did not enjoy it. Maybe as I become more experienced as a pipe smoker I will appreciate it; so its off to my cellar for Frog Morton's Cellar.

This is a mix between Captain Black, some latakia, and a smoke scent. Latakia is on the rear, quiet and almost nonexistent for latakia smokers. Truly an aromatic blend, but too similar to Captain Black to deserve 3 stars. The block of wood in the can does not impress me. The price does.. it is over 3 times more expensive than captain black or similar cheap blends. The whisky is an invention to me, since the aromatic flavor is certainly artificial being identical to other blends.

I really like the aesthetic of the tin and the barrel stave that comes with it.
It is a bit hard to keep lit (for me anyway) but it is a very cool smoke. The taste is over all fairly mild but it has a hint of an aftertaste I don't like (an unpleasant artificial taste is the best I can describe it).
I smoked 3 bowls of it in a brand new Stanwell Deluxe (which I had intended to dedicate it to) and while it smoked well, the aftertaste I mentioned really bothered me. So then I then I smoked it in my Peterson bulldog (2 or 3 bowls) and I enjoyed it more because the aftertaste wasn't as pronounced (I am guessing because it has long since been broken in) but it still wasn't what I was hoping for after reading all the rave reviews. I then switched to my Savinelli straight Dublin with a filter and liked it best out of the lot. The aftertaste was barely noticeable and on the relights it really had a great flavor, smoky and a little nutty (to me anyway). But unfortunately that wasn't very consistent throughout the bowl.
Maybe whiskey flavored tobaccos just aren't my thing. It is still a good tobacco, I just can't give it 4 stars.

I get excited about other blends of course, but this one, along with a few others, is always one of those blends I want to go to when I look upon my jars of tobacco, trying to decide with which to fill the bowl... though it does seem to border (and perhaps it just IS) an aromatic tobacco experience (vanilla has to be added it seems to my taste buds) it is a wonderful experience from opening the jar, to charring light, to the very end of the bowl. I love the mild latakia and virginia taste and what perhaps is the whiskey coming through, as well as whatever else it is dancing off my tongue and in my nostrils! For me a very sweet smoke, and similar to Beck's Ol'Limey Bastard. Both are very good in my humble opinion.
EDIT: Well, the longer I've smoked and the more I've smoked, the less I've come to love Ol' Cellar. Hate to say it... but have to be honest with myself. For me, it increasing tastes cased with vanilla and something else. This does not destroy it for me, and I still enjoy it, but I do choose others over it pretty often now. Perhaps my pallet is maturing, perhaps it's just the natural way this hobby works, and perhaps it will return. However it feels more cased to me now and is less of what I prefer. I've come to prefer blends that have little to no casing... down one star...

This is my first review. I sit here now, jazz playing low on my back porch. Just lit up a bowl of Frog Morton's Cellar....wow, just wow. To give an idea of how amazing this is, I just made an account to give this major props. I read numerous review and was skeptical that it could be as good as everyone says. I'm relatively new to pipes. I come from the cigar world, now loving the even slower pace of the pipe world. I had not found anything that just blew me away. Soooo many likes but no loves. I tried many aromatics which were ok but just missed something. I tried Oxford flake, and premium English blends that were very good, but still just did not just make me overly excited. I pulled the trigger and ordered a 50g tin of FMC. Had a long day at work, came home and worked out. Sat down, smelled the opened tin that I JUST had delivered and just melted. The Latakia, as everyone says, is definitely there, but it's just so tame. It's so smooth I can't describe it. The wood stage from the whiskey barrel is genius IMHO. It gives it that extra sweet was and complexity. You just sit there discovering new tastes and smells. Makes me appreciate my pipe and reflect on my day. Reminds me of sitting by a bonfire at night with a cool breeze coming off the lake while set up in my hammock. Love it. All I can say. Being my first review I'm sure this is just scattered thoughts. Just had to make an account and brag on this tobacco. It's a beautiful thing to come across something like this. I found my tin, my go to relaxation button. I'd type more but I'm using two hands and my pipe went out, time to get back to my happy place. The wife loved the smell, also big plus. Definitely a tin for beginners to pipe vets. Seems to burn cool and slow with absolutely NO tongue bite while staying buttery smooth. Much respect from myself and my Peterson pipe for this blend. Take that trip through Frog Morton's Cellar, but be warned, you may not leave.

Okay, first a bit about me so you know where I'm coming from. I recently began smoking a pipe again after about 25 years away from it (spawned by the inheritance of my Dad's pipe collection). First task: Rediscover what kind of tobacco I like. A friend is partial to McClelland tobaccos, so that's where I started. In the past few weeks, I've tried the following McClelland leaf: Frog Morton's Cellar, Holiday Spirit, Town Topic, and Deep Hollow, and 2045 Oriental Mixture (bulk). In addition, I've tried Orlik Golden Sliced, and a few identity-unknown tobacco shop blends known simply as "Cavendish Caramel," and "Oxford."
Okay, what I've learned is that I don't like Latakia. The smoky, ashtray taste just rubs me wrong. I know Cellar is a popular blend, and loads of people love it, but for me, the Latakia is just too much. McClelland's 2045 Oriental Mixture is better. It has less Latakia in it than Cellar. I really wanted to like this because of all the positive reviews, but I just can't get past the ashtray taste.
Others may like the oak campfire smell/taste, and if so, that's fantastic - McClelland needs to sell this stuff to someone. But they won't be selling it to me. Instead, I'll be stocking up on Town Topic and Deep Hollow, my go-to blends.

I've reviewed many tobaccos and never given below three stars, but I have to make an exception this time--and I'm a big Frog Morton fan. Here are the problems:
Goop. This redefines a goopy tobacco. My entire bowl was wet with goop that I had to scrape out and eventually dry out.
The scent is nice when you open the tin, but it is overpowering for the first few days the tin is open, and then fades into irrelevance. After a few weeks of being open, this tobacco has almost no taste.
The cut of the tobacco is by far the worst I've ever seen. The ribbons are of such varying sizes and fineness that it's impossible to pack it properly. My pipe hisses and doesn't allow a good, clean pull. There are a ton of stems too.
I'm so frustrated with this blend I'm actually throwing out the rest of what I have left, which is about a third of a tin. Very disappointing.
