This is a very fine ribbon cut tobacco, and it is a good smoke. It is a combination of Virginia and dark fired Kentucky tobaccos. The flavor was slightly sweet/nutty tobacco with a little spice from the Kentucky. This sounds like it would be fairly mild from my description, but it delivered a medium strength and flavor when combined. I found this to be a satisfying smoke. I liked this, and it is a serious bargain.

Edit: Now that I have read some of the other reviews, I think I should mention that I am smoking this in a pipe and not a paper tube. I find that hydrating it a little brings out the flavors. I have smoked over two pounds of this, and it is a 3.5 on the four-star scale for me.

The Virginias are grassy with a little earth, wood, some citrus, and a very light fruitiness. They form the base of this blend. The dark fired Kentucky is mildly sweet, fairly smokey and floral, woody, earthy, and very nutty with a fair amount of spice, and is very obvious in every puff. Obvious enough that it often takes attention away from the Virginias. The strength, taste and nic-hit are medium. A thin ribbon cut that needs hydration to bring out more flavor and reduce the burn rate. A moderate puffing cadence to avoid a cigarette note or two is recommended. Burns well even with added moisture. Has a very consistent flavor, though can tingle your tongue. May bite if puffed hard. Requires very few relights as it easily burns to ash. Leaves no moisture in the bowl. Has a spicy, lightly lingering after taste, though the room note might not please everybody. Some may use this for RYO, but it works well in a pipe as an occasional during the day smoke. I do suggest having a drink handy when you smoke it as it can dry your throat a little, especially if you use a pipe with a big bowl.

Go to a park. Watch the ducks play in the lake. Nod at the lovers under a tree. Walk a few miles among the flowers and grass. What do you smoke for this venture? "Amsterdam" adapts the "Halfzware" style of mixed Virginias and dark-fired Kentucky that shows up in rolling blends like Drum "Gold," but makes it fit for a pipe smoke. Compared to recent pipe smokes of Drum "Gold," this blend is not as sweet or as strong in flavor as one might need with the hotter-burning cigarettes, but instead a mellow mix of bready and sweet Virginias with the spicy smoke of the dark-fired. For slow smokers, this is a great blend that works well outdoors.

This is a good plain unflavored tobacco for new pipe smokers who want to quit cigarettes, the flavor is spicy and nutty, very close to cigarette flavor but much better, also this can be used as RYO smoke

Peter Stokkebye Amsterdam is an exceptional bulk tobacco for an exceptionally low price. Virginia forward, like cigarette tobacco for the pipe – but much deeper and nuanced. Medium strength, middle of the road, all day blend. Could be added to with condiment mixing tobaccos or sealed up and stored with a splash of dark spirit. I prefer using a larger bowl for Amsterdam, as it relights well. A serious bargain – seriously overlooked!

The pipe tobacco version of PS Amsterdam hand-rolling tobacco, this blend comes noticeably damper, suggesting a conscious effort by the manufacturer to differentiate this from the RYO version in deference to pipe smokers. So what did I do? I smoked it rolled as a cigarette to test that hypothesis. Burns well, despite higher moisture content than RYO version. Significantly more tang than the RYO version. Overall an enjoyable smoke, though I must respectfully disagree with a previous reviewer: this is nothing like Bali Shag in cut, aroma, or flavor. If you want an excellent rolling tobacco, skip this and get some Bali Shag (or even some PS rolling tobacco).

In a pipe this blend becomes more alive. A nice KY/VA tang on the palate. Burns well, if a bit hot when over-puffed (probably a function of the cut). A good vaue as an all-day smoke for frequent pipe smokers. Lacking in the depth or complexity required by special occasions, or by occasional pipe smokers. Those who smoke Prince Albert, Half and Half, etc, should really try this one for a step up in flavor and an inexpensive introduction to Virginias.

Recommended as a step up for those currently smoking OTCs. Outstanding value in quantities over two ounces.

Reviewing as a RYO/MYO cigarette tobacco. Semi rich sweetness balanced by bold natural smokey tobacco flavors. Real overall flavor sensation that I find irresistable. "High test", best served in moderation. I think fantastic for short, thin diameter nonfilter roll type cigarettes. Great value. For me, best served fresh, maximum moisture as provided. Outstanding, I think sets the standard by which others are judged.

Edited 5/23/12: Half way thru second lb. This bag seems darker with more Kentucky in the mix, but conversely the taste is milder with less Kentucky influence. Regardless, still fantastic RYO/MYO smoke. Four stars!

Edited 7/5/12: Third lb as good/consistant with the second. Four Stars.

PS - When not inhaled, get mostly mild plain tobacco taste with slight hint of Kentucky. Out of the "pipe tobacco" / RYO Peter Stokkebye group of blends, this has the most N and is closes to any appeal for the pipe smoker. Others in this category not so much appeal for the pipe smoker, at best as mild value blenders for toning down other tobaccos.

When you first open the bag you will notice it is a bit dry, this is fine in my opinion and works well for this blend. Packs well and lights easy. I have tried both the Shag cut and Ribbon cut; both cuts honestly create different flavor/effects. The shag is more harsh, burns faster, and is much stronger in spiciness. I prefer the ribbon cut.

First half: Spicy Kentucky immediately enlightens your senses. You can puff at will pipers, this blend is smooth with little bite unlike the shag. Smokey campfire meets a nutty sweet bread loaf

Mid Bowl: The sweetness is completely distinguishable from the spice yet both remain equal leaders. Burning okay, relit twice. Loving every puff.

Bottom bowl: Bready notes galore, with spice on the back of the tongue. Ashing wonderfully to the end. Last hit was pure hay.

Overview: Room note was Campfire and pure tobacco. Taste throughout was sweet and spicy with lots of bread. I have to say this is my go-to everyday smoke. I love this blend dearly. If this was the only tobacco left on Earth I would be a happy guy.

I wanna give the most honest review I can with this tobacco blend so first off over the packing of a pipe this is far better for a RYO tobacco. If smoked in a pipe it will be smooth and is a all and all good smoke but for the best taste it really must be inhaled otherwise you'll miss out on its design. Its nicotine level is on the medium side but being a natural nicotine has a tendency to relax but by all means can absolutely be smoked in a pipe of course. Having a nice smokey tone to it and a smooth Virginia note this is a very fine tobacco blend and is highly enjoyable. It is not for the new comer but more so for a seasoned smoker although a person is always free to go for it. I find it very enjoyable and I'm not a cig smoker anymore but it is very enjoyable in that form being twisted in a zig zag or JoB paper will get the job done and you don't want a filter taking away from the taste. A velvety smoke that's alittle sweet and no bite whether in a pipe or paper. When smoked in a pipe a slow draw and slight inhale will give the best results but understanding that it does have some nicotine I do not want to down play that. I would recommend this because its high quality tobacco and is very good, its not processed and has no chemicals, its how tobacco used to be when smoked in cig form. It is what it is and suits both cigarette smoker and pipe smoker. I would also suggest it being smoked in a corn cob for the reason that it could add to your pipe cake a taste you would not really want not that its bad and is like a ash tray because its not, just that it is a stand alone tobacco with its own character robust but mellow and smooth. Pleasing in every way PS Amsterdam is a fine choice for all the reasons above, happy smoking my friends!!!

Virginia and spicy Kentucky starts as a middle of road Virginia blend and then things get spicy, easy to light and even easier to keep lit it produces a lot of ashes, smokes better when dry completely worth to keep around but don’t know about hoarding it, I have smoked this blend on and off for 15 years and it really depends in what you get, I have received pouches where there is almost no black tobacco and I have received pouches that is almost black so your mileage may vary, decent nicotine hit also.

A well made blend in the vein of Kendal Dark or Kendal Kentucky. Rich, earthy and woodsy, smoky, hearty, spicy.. almost no sweetness... tasteful, yet not as tasteful as Kendal Dark or Kentucky are, so I'll go with "only" 3-stars. Not much to tell about the taste, rather tart Virginias with only mild sweetness, and the above mentioned Kentucky's qualities. Works well! ;-)

Light and airy smoke that reminds me or fresh mowed summer grass, sweet Lemmon rind, sweet straw, and a light peppery finish. The tobacco came fairly dry in bulk packaging, smoked quickly but focusing on slowly working through the bowl I did not experience any tongue bite.

I would not consider this blend having depth or complexity but for a predominantly Virgina blend I enjoyed several flavor notes playing off each other through the bowl.

Peter Stokkebye - Amsterdam.

Quite a 'to the point' smoke, with nothing pretentious about it. At the risk of sounding sexist, it conjures up the term Manly!

The only low thing about Amsterdam, from an objective point of view, is the cut; as it's fine and shag-like this can cause a rapid burn that's too hot. Take it easy with a bowl! The smoke has a higher proportion of fired Kentucky flavour compared to Virginia: smoky and nutty. To my taste the Kentucky takes on more nuts from its Burley roots as the bowl progresses, and the fired note abates. Subjectively speaking, it bites hard; this, obviously, I don't like!

I find the room-note a little unfriendly, and the nicotine strong.

Not my cup of tea, so two stars it its result!

Somewhat recommended.

I always inhale this stuff, whether it be from a small corncob or cigarette tubes.

Smell is fantastic. Creates voluminous smoke. Taste is mediocre- drying it out (almost to the point of bone-dryness) helps a bit. Strength is a hair over medium, in my opinion.

Bland and disappointing compared to the genuine Amsterdam Shag rolling tobacco, which was much much tastier. But this dual-purpose incarnation is about a quarter of the price... a so-so tobacco for a wonderful price.

Stokkebye's Turkish is incomparably better for cigarettes.

A fine ribbon cut tobacco that has a natural smell in the pouch with perfect burning qualities. An old school, straight forward baccy that is inexpensive and available. There's a good amount of nicotine and a small bowl, slowly smoked is required.

The nutty slightly dry and very spicy taste reminds me of a good cigar that is better enjoyed, for me, after a meal. Those who smoke European style Kentucky cigars or pipe tobacco, will have an honest and pleasant encounter with this offering.

Almost 4 star in corncobs, don't know why.

A friendly blend with a natural flavor. Needs no preparations. Dry enough to enjoy directly from the package.

Recommended for value-Li'l Brown has it for $20 a pound! An unremarkable but solid recut/rebrand (?) of what was originally a RYO tobacco to get around the higher taxes. I couldn't resist it, or the Norwegian, at that price, but it is more something I will just keep in a (really big) jar to have around, smoke occasionally, roll a cig out of, emergency reserve for the apocalypse, etc.

I won't be smoking a lot of it, because I have so much that is better. That said, it isn't bad. Nothing sublime, but no rough stuff either. It packs a tolerable pipe, and rolls (rubbed out a bit) a decent cigarette. I've tried it both ways. My brother is a RYO smoker, and he liked it enough to take an ounce from me to mix with his usual roll, American Spirit US Grown.

The most interesting element is the addition of Kentucky, but it isn't really the knockout kind of Kentucky. One can tell it's there, and it adds a pleasant smokiness.

This is one of those tobaccos where immediately upon finishing the first bowl I loaded up another one.

Taste is of dried fruit, grain, and a slight smokiness.

Easy to pack, light and keep lit. No drama.

Very pleasant, and definitely worth buying more than an ounce at a time.

As a new RYO / MYO cigarette smoker coming from Camel No. 9 Regular, this blend (ribbon strand for pipe) and filter were recommended to me by a friend as a substitute for "store bought." Not only is this blend a wonderful flavor and strength, it provides greater satisfaction than 'production' cigarettes. As I am new to RYO / MYO, even with very basic 'starter' equipment (Zen Classic Shooter - $6.99), one can learn in a short amount of time (about 3 weeks in my case) to make a better smoke than you can by at a fraction of the cost. I have tried other blends specifically for RYO / MYO cigarettes to be more expensive and less satisfying.

As someone who rolls cigarettes but is trying to completely move away from it, this is the perfect blend as an everyday all-day smoke.

It is positively rough, thanks to the Kentucky, has perfect moisture, packs easily, doesn't usually require relights, and is very affordable.

The Kentucky is pretty smokey and spicy, and is playing a leading role, but is mellowed and added to just the right amount by the sweet virginias. This makes it stronger than other similar blends, such as the Danish blend. It's more flavorful and feels like "real tobacco" rather than other, chemical and flavored everyday smokes. No BS here.

It does tend to burn a bit fast and can cause a bite if you puff too fast, but for me it has been rare. I rotate my two cheap Brewster pipes for this one.

I Was told that the room note is that of cigarettes. But this is not a blend meant for special occasions or once-a-week smoke. This is, for me, a daily smoke to replace cigarettes. Compared with the sticks, it's cheaper, has better taste, and is not as unhealthy. What's to lose?

For the specific use for me - this is a four stars blend.

I smoked Amsterdam shag for almost 10 years (RYO) and then something changed within he last year or two. The mix of tobaccos has become quite different and lots of times, I end up purchasing a can only to find it moldy! Bleh.

I love these ribbon cuts. Loading is a cinch, although it is possible to overpack this stuff, and that, as we shall see, may have consequences.

Lights as quickly and easily as expected, though the crown was quite unruly and wanted a good firm tamp to settle it back down. Didn't really need a true light; this stuff burns quite readily, though not, surprisingly, all that quickly.

The taste off the first light is cinnamon and wood smoke, and that's what you get for the remainder of the bowl. The cinnamon is the only flavor on the retrohale. Spicy and simple, simply spicy, in a way that feels like perique but doesn't taste like perique. That's the Kentucky, I suppose, and though I'm not a fan of perique, I like this even less. Less character. Sipping gives you wood smoke, tugging gives you cinnamon.

And then, yes, there it is... ladies and gentlemen, Nathan has been bitten for the first time in his short but enthusiastic pipe-smoking career. Unpleasant. I had to "reset the pack" with the poker on the Czech tool and slow way the flip down.

Back to the dominant flavors of wood and spice. Because I smoked too hard to begin with, I got a little bitterness, but that fixed itself as I corrected my cadence.

Good nicotine level, though my rating on this particular smoke is probably skewed by an empty stomach. This is an uncomplicated, quality blend that doesn't ask much, except for a light pack and an open-drawed pipe. It's an oatmeal sort of pipe tobacco. Nobody loses sleep waiting for a breakfast of oatmeal, but when you haven't the time to fuss about with complicated preparations or the inclination to sit and ponder nuances of flavor, a bowl of this honest, uncomplicated leaf will suit quite nicely.

I'm reviewing this selection as a dual purpose tobacco. Picked up some pipe cut and some shag to compare as a rollie. Taste and aroma are nearly indiscernible, the only difference in is the cut- the shag is much easier to roll. The pipe cut can be rolled though, without issue, and smokes just fine. In a pipe it's not at the top of my list, but not bad in any way. For the price, Amsterdam pipe cut is highly recommended for the folks who enjoy pipes, RYO, and spliffs.

Is a mixture based or cigarrete tobacco. Virginia with little Dark Kentuck. The flavour is mild,but taste is full, tastes smoke with little cinammon and cloves. In the room note, rassembles chocolate and coccoa. Interesting tobacco, different of all other mixtures that i tried. Ideal for all day smoke, however, smoke slowly and in small bowls. Large Nicotine ammount. Good. Recommended.

This is quite a pleasant surprise. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend and have been smoking it nearly every day after work. I’m not a huge fan of DFK, but it’s administered well in this blend.

I have been exploring some “shag cut” tobacco and I’ve found I am enjoying them a great deal. They take some getting used to. One must smoke a bit more slowly to avoid bite, but I think this experience is helping with cadence. I’ve always been kind of a faster smoker. 12 years of smoking a pipe and I’m still learning. Packing is a breeze, so it’s a small welcome change from the flakes and plugs that I smoke quite a bit of. Worth your money, even if it’s just an ounce purchase just to try it. Cheap, satisfying, and lovely. A solid 3.5. I’ll definitely order more.

Peter Stokkebye Amsterdam: The appearance is predominantly reddish brown with some tan pieces in the mix. Mine is the ribbon cut for pipe smoking and it packs and lights easily. The initial flavor is a balance of Virginia and Kentucky, with the Virginia taking the lead somewhat. When puffed vigorously, the Kentucky flavor steps up and overshadows the Virginia. Overall, it is a pretty good balance between the two types of tobaccos. The rest of the bowl is like the first part of the bowl, just good, unadulterated tobacco flavor with a pleasant tang. I smoked it in a Comoy's Guildhall billiard with a healthy cake. The smoke is of medium intensity in terms of body and flavor. There is little depth or complexity; this is a straightforward tobacco lover's dream. The nicotine strength is medium as a pipe tobacco.

I admit I am not an expert pipe-smoker. Rather the opposite. I tried this Virginia based tobacco as it brings me back to my earliest smoking attempts (full of mistakes) in my twenties. Overall it is not an easy smoke (it burns quick and the risk of tongue bite is high for a newbie like me). The taste is mild, liquorice notes are clearly present. It needs to be smoked very slowly. Overall not exactly my favorite, but in any case the Amsterdamer is a classic to try once in a while. Could be interesting with a pinch of added Burley (in fact I think there is a variety ike that available).

If you are searching for a no nonsense tobacco that won't break the bank and offers a very respectable nicotine punch, search no further!

Thin shaggy cut, some very long strips, and some chopped up. One can definitely see the difference in the dark fired and VA leaf.

Pouch aroma is the epitome of a dark fired blend. There is no mistaking it! This blend loads and packs well. I prefer to pack on the tighter side to reduce burn rate and temp. To me, if dark fired gets too warm in a pipe, it tastes like you're smoking pure vulcanite.

This blend burns cool and even, zero tongue bite. The Virginia brings the perfect amount of sweetness and balances out perfectly with the DF. I was quite surprised at the strength of this blend For the first time in years, I was able to feel the nicotine. Most blends do very little if anything to my nic receptors. Not a perfect example of an indoor blend, but it doesn't exactly leave a negative room note either. I've really enjoyed this as an outdoor winter blend, especially ice fishing here in Michigan. Great with a black coffee!

I'd agree with most of the reviews on here that Amsterdam seems like a RYO tobacco with how thin cut and Virginia forward it is. But, I'd say this blend does a better job of blending in more varied tobaccos to create a well rounded profile.

Amsterdam is a relatively smooth flavor with hints spicy smokiness peeking out occasionally from within the mellow Virginia. If you're looking for a super unique flavor to wow you I don't think that could be said of this particular blend. Amsterdam is a straightforward smooth to medium bodied smoke that is reminiscent of a strong cigarette, with it's price and availability I'd recommend you give it a try!
