A straight burley blend that is nutty, earthy, and woody with a definite molasses flavor and a little cocoa. Has a mild nicotine hit. The strength is mild, and the taste is a couple of steps past that mark. Won't bite or get harsh, though it does have a rough edge, and a slight sharp note from the white burley. Burns a little slow due to being a cube cut; cool and clean with a very consistent taste. Requires a few relights, and leaves very little dampness in the bowl. Has a very pleasant, short lived after taste and room note. An all day work and play smoke that may not be complex, but has enough going for it to hold your interest. A good starter burley blend for someone who has never tried the genre.

This Match is very close to the original. I spent a weekend comparing the two versions. The original seemed a little fuller, deeper in the molasses taste, and that's the only difference I can tell. The cut and look of the tobacco is the very same. In a blind taste test, it would be very hard to tell which was which. I gave four stars to the original.

EDIT: The batch I got in the Spring of 2015 tastes as I have described it above. However, the cut was changed to a rough cut with some small chunks, and the tobacco is lighter is color. This version burns slower, but at least it tastes the same. Others have reported the same change in cut.

10-20-2016 Update: Apparently, Sutliff has listened to the complaints as the productions of this year's Match ERR are exactly like my original description.

I was recently gifted about a half oz of the original ERR, and now I am smoking my way through about an oz of the Sutliff match. This match is very close. The original may have a slightly more pronounced bass note, but I would be challenged to tell which was which if smoking from two unmarked baggies. As a match this is a 4 star review.

The smoke is a burley forward mild Vabur with a slight mellow sweet note that is hard to identify. It is molasses perhaps. It is good but not very exciting. It presents as the OTC you wish you could buy in pouches at the grocery store and filling station. The flavor is consistent for me, and it had good light/burn characteristics.

It has smoked cool and dry for me in a variety of pipes, and I suspect it would benefit from a dedicated pipe with no ghosts to intrude on the mild flavor.

As a blend this is a 3 star smoke. If you enjoy this type of blend, get some now, and you will not be disappointed. If you need a flavor bomb to satisfy you, look elsewhere.

Sutliff's Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match.

Having only picked up the pipe in 2013, I never knew the original ERR.

Never have I purchased a tobacco that had more 3-star reviews than 4-star reviews, so, this was a first for me. What then would have motivated me to deviate from the norm to try a long-ago, discontinued, over-the-drugstore-countertop pipe tobacco that is readily referred to as a "Grandpa classic" and "Codger blend"?

There is a back story (which I have told before) that warrants re-telling here.

The whole reason I ever picked up the pipe in the first place was due to what can only be described as an otherworldly, paranormal experience I had when I literally awoke one morning to Richard Pryor’s ghost screaming inside my head: “PIIIIIIIIIIIIIPE!!! TOBACCO PIIIIIIIIPE!!! PIPE TOBACCOOOOOOO!!!”

It was the closest thing to a religious revelation that I have ever experienced in my life -- as if I had been commanded by a burning bush: “The redolent scent of Jack Lundy’s pipe, from the fertile fields of your earliest childhood memories on Loma Verde in Palo Alto, 1965 – that is what you shall seek, My Son” . . .

Within three hours of that awakening, I owned my very first pipe (a Peterson rusticated Donegal Rocky, a venerable workhorse, still in regular rotation today). And ever since that day, I’ve been searching for that most sanctified scent which emanated from Jack Lundy’s pipe, more than a half-century ago.

Back in 1965, when I was 4-years-old, Jack Lundy was our next-door neighbor in Palo Alto. To me, Mr. Lundy was “the milkman”: he worked at Peninsula Creamery, delivering milk and ice cream for a living. His daily work attire resembled a World War II officer’s uniform: khaki pants and shirt, with brass buckled belt, bow tie, and a crusher-styled aviator’s cap, replete with leather visor. I remember Mr. Lundy delivering “snowballs” to our home at Christmas: a round dollop of vanilla ice cream, covered in shredded coconut, with green plastic holly leaves at the base of a red candle that sat atop the concept.

But Mr. Lundy was more than just “the milkman” to me; more than just the next-door neighbor. Jack Lundy smoked pipes. He kept a round pipe rack on his end-table, just next to the family room couch in front of the fireplace and television set, where he used to sit, impassively smoking his pipes. I remember Mr. Lundy smoking his pipes as he watched boxing matches or baseball games on his black-and-white TV. When visiting their home, Mr. Lundy would hand me wedges of colored salts that I would then throw upon the logs burning in his fireplace – salts that would produce brilliantly colored flames of red, green, blue and aqua. Turning from the heat of the hearth, I would see Jack on the couch, cross-legged, pipe in hand, puffing ever so gently on his briars.

The oracular epiphany of that morning literally changed my life: I have been a pipe smoker ever since that magical, mystical vision came to me.

Jack Lundy was already an "Old Codger" when he passed away more than 30-years ago.

What pipes did he smoke? What tobaccos did he smoke? I wish I knew. I wish I could go back in time to 1965 and sit with Jack on his couch, and talk with him about his pipes and his tobaccos.

Back in the mid-1960s, I am reasonably sure that Edgeworth Ready Rubbed was perhaps something that Jack would have most likely sampled himself, and so -- this Sutliff match being so close to the original, according to those who would know -- I wanted to commune with this blend, using it as a kind of Ouija tobacco, in a séance of sorts, to see if this native American spiritual leaf could somehow transport me back in time . . .

I did not have high expectations for this blend -- I prefer ardent, robust tobaccos -- and I've had lots of bad experience with aromatics and "flavored" tobaccos, but I was going to try this one out.

Well . . .

If this wasn't called Ready Rubbed Match, it could have very well been called "A Charlie Brown Christmas Blend -- 1965".

There have been occasions when I have smoked back-to-back bowls of tobacco before. The untimely passing of close friend, or in times of great stress and/or great joy. But I have never smoked back-to-back bowls of something that I am trying for the first time (no matter how good the blend).

To say that I was "pleasantly surprised" by this blend would be The Mother of All Understatements. This stuff is amazing.

Maybe I just got lucky with a phenomenal batch of bulk when I ordered this.

As soon as I opened the box I could smell the chocolatey cocoa topping ("okay, this has definitely been topped" I thought, "We'll see how this goes").

The stuff looked good enough to eat -- it looked like some kind of enticing animal feed on my tobacco mat. On the char my very first thought was "Wow" . . .

Nutty, chocolatey -- nicely topped -- no goop, no moisture. Burned perfectly cool. I have two Peterson Dracula Rhodesians -- I smoked the first bowl in one of them -- and it was so amazing I smoked the second bowl in the other because I wanted to replicate the experience of the first as closely as I could.

The following day, I put this stuff in a Dagner cob -- and it just really pairs perfectly with a cob. This will definitely be one of my top 3 Christmas cob blends from here on out.

As I was smoking this, the thought kept going through my mind: "This tastes so familiar -- I've had something very close to this before -- what was it"?

Brashboy mentioned Watch City Deluxe Crumb Cut, and I thought to myself "No -- no, no, no -- that's not right, DCC has Cavendish and Latakia in it". But I went and grabbed some DCC from the closet and, lo, it was indeed very, very similar in flavor profile (so, yes, it was the DCC that was the familiar taste).

To put this review into proper perspective, I will offer the following tangential comparison between two things for the purpose of insuring that the bullet of my thought makes its mark.

Wild Turkey 101 is my bourbon of choice (I will drink other bourbons, but I only buy the 101), and I've been getting it for years at $14.99 a bottle from San Tomas Liquors. It is, by far and away, the best bang-for-the-buck bourbon money can buy, and -- IMHO -- to spend a penny more on any bourbon is simply throwing money away. The nose is sweet caramel, bourbon spice, nutmeg and cinnamon. The vanilla is pronounced and brings with it some sweet cream. The wood is a bit hidden until you add a splash of water and then it rolls out next to the vanilla. It tastes of caramel like a Werther’s original. Sweet corn is followed by vanilla and red licorice. Some citrus, a slight grainy malt and a bit of smoky ash round out the undiluted flavor. Add some water and the oak begins to express itself much more and the corn becomes even more prominent. Smooth and warm going down, with a slight burn, but overall a great mouth feel. It has a long finish, initially dominated by Caramel but fades to wood, sweet grains and dark fruit.

Recently I discovered Mellow Corn: A 100-proof, Bottled in Bond corn whiskey (Moonshine!) made the same way as always by Heaven Hill since 1945, and it is THE most absolutely out-of-this-world hooch I've ever had: notes of vanilla and corn, with ethereal notes of spice, citrus, honey and a fruitiness that reminds me of Juicy Fruit gum. Vanilla taffy, Juicy Fruit gum and corn lead the way on the palate with airy notes of toffee, spice and citrus coming in behind. The finish is vanilla, Juicy Fruit gum, marshmallows and corn run it’s course on a medium finish. This is 100-proof 'shine that is smooth-as-silk, with none of the sharp edges one would expect, and virtually no heat; it goes down like wine (which makes sense, because it is, in fact, high wine). I get this stuff at Total Wines & More for $10.49 a bottle (less than one would pay for a cheap bottle of wine).

The point being that Sutliff Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match is the Mellow Corn equivalent of pipe tobacco: it's old school, it's unpretentious, it's undervalued, and it's a damn good Burley blend that's been expertly and discreetly topped for a deliciously nuanced, aromatic-non-aromatic tobacco.

I cannot believe this does not have more 4-star reviews than it currently does.

I really just wanted to update this to add that I have since smoked a bowl of the Edgeworth Ready Rubbed from the 70s. The topping flavor of the match is very close to the original or what was left on the original anyway. The years were not too kind to the box I bought. I do have another box in the cellar that will hopefully provide a better smoke. Still, it wasn't terrible as some other tobaccos I have had in that age range.

I also recently finished up the last of the match that I had in the cellar and there is really nothing else that needs to be done to amend the original review as I feel the same as I did before.

I have never tried the original ERR'd, so I have no point of comparison between the two blends. I likely never would have tried this, but our esteemed Mr. Inks got tired of me bashing Sutliff and was determined to change my mind. This is one of the three blends he sent me to do so.

Overall, I did like this blend. It is an easy going burley smoke along the lines of Lane's BLWB, but substantially better IMO. It won't bite and will give you an enjoyable smoke when your mind may be elsewhere. This one won't spellbind you with complexity while you contemplate changing flavors. It is a codger burley, plain and simple, and a good one at that. It has the nutty type of profile one would expect from a burley that is amplified by the light topping. Don't let that lead you to believe that this is a sugary flavorless Aromatic though. There is plenty of burley adding some body to this one letting you know that you are indeed smoking tobacco.

I wouldn't put this up there with the comparable Uhle's blends, but I do recommend it. It is a great smoke at a great price.

I decided to try the 'grandpa classics' of the pipe tobacco world. Stuff like Prince Albert, Half and Half, and Edgeworth among others. To my dismay the original Edgeworth line had been discontinued but I heard there was an almost exact match by Sutliff, so I went online and got myself some.

I will be getting more.

This stuff is a little strange but darned good! It smells like chocolate out of the bag and made my mouth water. The cube cut is something that I had never seen before and didn't quite know what to do with, but I loaded my pipe as is and was surprised at just how well the little chunks burned. It isn't overpowering or complicated in taste, being just a chocolate sweetness with some walnut. No bite, no fuss, really tasty flavors. Now I want another bowl!

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Match Edgeworth Ready Rubbed.

It's listed as ready rubbed but as well as the fully rubbed pieces there's also a lot of cube-cut pieces and broken flakes. There's a slight chocolate aroma from the baggie but nothing heavily aromatic. It's a steady medium brown in colour and the moisture's good.

After a few bowls I increased the rating from one, to three: be careful when you load this, and watch your tamping, otherwise the cubes can easily block the mouthpiece's hole. Providing it's loaded, and tamped correctly, it gives a good burn with a cool smoke. To me, the added flavours' are medium, with the molasses easily trumping the chocolate; it gets very sweet as it burns down. Where the tobaccos' are concerned, I get a lot more nuts compared to Virginia-grass; it makes the general flavour a bit like a nutty chocolate bar.

The nicotine's mild, and the room-note's pleasant.

Even though this is a good smoke, it becomes a bit boring quickly; hence, three stars, not four.

This is a really delicious version of ERR! I do prefer the new Lane version in the blue tub that was recently released but only by a small margin. Sutliff's version having larger chunks that burn slower and is available in bulk at a lower price is also a 4 star blend in my book. I just love quality Burley's like this with their nutty, cedar, #2 pencil taste and aromas! Some molasses and cocoa topping perhaps but nothing too dramatic. A very old school aromatic... A small MM Washington gave me the best smoke. Pack It super loose until it is dry, then pack lightly.

I purchased my 8 ounce's from Pipe and Cigars and the moisture was a tad too high but honestly I would rather it arrived like that than dry and crumbly, for one thing some tobacco's lose their essential oils when dried too long and two cube cut tends to turn to dust when dried too long... Price, aroma, flavor... ERR Match is a winner for me! ERR and its Matches bring me back to the 1940's, FDR Fireside chats, Tube Radio's and The Andrew Sisters.... Enchanting!

Downgrading this a star, as subsequent batches have been inconsistent. The last one did not taste much like ERR'd. Hopefully Sutliff corrects this down the road, as this was an excellent match blend. Still good, but lately it's not as good.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 2/19/12

Based on a sample received from a friend, perhaps 3/4 - 1 oz. Another ERR'd match blend - how boring. It's been done to death, and never correctly.

But I smoked a bowl of this and was so intrigued that I trudged down to the cellar (yep - my cellar is in the cellar!) and grabbed a small jar of the real deal for comparison. The look was a bit different - the ERR'd was darker and the plugs were smaller. But the aroma was the similar cocoa and nut. The darker color could have been age, as my ERR'd is all at least 7-10 years old.

Is this the same as ERR'd? Well, blindfolded I'd have a great deal of trouble distinguishing them. This had the old familiar flavor of nutty burley with the slight cocoa finish that made it slightly sweet. It didn't bite the tongue and was consistent in flavor throughout the bowl. Almost zero complexity, but that great flavor to the end. No ashy taste or harshness, unless overpuffed. This is close enough to ERR'd that any differences are largely irrelevant to me. I smoked a bowl of ERR'd right after I finished this and noticed no glaring differences, while being uncertain about different nuances. May have been some present or it may have been in my noodle.

Four stars for an Altadis blend - is the sky falling? :) But if this sample is any indication, they nailed this match blend where so many others have failed. Four resounding stars!

There is little to add to what has been written, except that I first smoked Edgeworth in 1972, when it was produced by Larus & Brother, its creators, and it was the slices, not the ready rubbed. This Sutliff match is very, very close. The now-unobtainable Wessex Slices claims to be the "original Richmond recipe." It isn't. Not by a long shot. The even-more-unobtainable Solani Aged Burley Flake comes a lot closer. And the Lane Ltd. version of the Ready Rubbed, available until Sutliff bought the rights to the name, was just about spot-on. The current Lane Ready Rubbed tastes just about like Sir Walter Raleigh, at twice the price.

This Sutliff Match is just plain good, except when it isn't. The quality, or the taste anyway, can be rather uneven, and that has to do with a deficiency of the cocoa-molasses toppings. When Sutliff skimps on those, or the Burley does not absorb them, this can be pretty blaahh.

But, when all goes well...there's no better Burley smoke at any price.

==UPDATE=== I had experienced this before, but forgot to add it. For a real treat, and an advanced tutorial into what this tobacco has to offer: Smoke 1/3 of a bowl (or so) and set it aside for a couple of days, then fire it up again. SUBLIME!!!!!

Also....others keep referring to this as a "Va/Bur." It ain't. It is 100% Burley. That, from the head blender at Sutliff.

My rating & comments are based solely upon the merits of this Sutliff rendition as I have not tried the original Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. From the accounts that I've read this "match" version is purported to be most like the original with regard to the tobacco's presentation (cut) and smoking qualities. This is a good quality blend that delivers a delicious light nutty & molasses flavor. Nothing complex here ... but IMHO there are times when one desires a simple smoke that's easy to enjoy without a lot of hoopla ... and this is a very good one for that purpose. I can see this being an all day smoke for me. If this Sutliff ERR match is anything close to the original blend I can understand why the old codgers liked it (I said that as though I'm not an old codger at this point in my life)! I will try the Lane version as well for comparison ... but me thinks this one is quite darn good!

Sutliff got the Burley codger thing down pat with this one. The room note is pure codger Burley, and that is a good thing. I'm not the biggest fan of cube-cut, but overlook it for this blend. The Virginia is there, too, though only in a supporting role, but rounds out the flavor nicely by adding a hay-like note.

First off, this is fine tobacco. It is cube cut, so gravity-fill the bowl with little or no tamping. I knock the bowl against my knuckle as I fill it to make it settle. I smoked the real Edgeworth Ready Rubbed, and this is close. Seems to me ERR was a bit darker and stronger, but it's been a few years; and plenty of other ERR smokers thinks this match is right on the money. Certainly, it's close, and that also is a good thing.

I know that batches of a blend can differ, just as age will cause a difference (mine is fresh). But I think the cocoa note is very subtle in the pouch. If I hadn't read it was there, might have missed it entirely. Picked up no molasses at all. Contrasted to other Burley blends with cocoa (see below), the cocoa in this one is faint, based on my sample.

Great tobacco, great taste, and $12 for 4 oz. as I write this. If that ain't four stars, then nothing is. Will definitely reorder. It's like smelling my Granddad's pipe again, maybe better.

EDIT: frequently get a taste that is very floral, Lakeland-like, especially toward the bottom. I like it.

I try not to over-analize my tobacco so much that I forget to enjoy it, but that being said I shall now launch into my first ever tobacco review...I smoked the original in the '80's and '90's and was never very impressed, always finding it to burn hot and flavorless. My tastes are pretty varied and lean toward OTCs for throughout-the-day enjoyment, non-vanilla aro samples for fun every now and then, and Lats and (most recently) Va/Pers for more contemplative times when I do actually feel like paying attention to what I am smoking. As I enjoy many of Sutliff's Match blends when smokingpipes added it to their bulk section I decided to try this Match. Glad I did. Baggie note was burley with molasses which I found instantly compelling, and moisture seemed about right. There was no problem packing or lighting the course cubes/flakes. I found the burn rate about right and couldn't get this stuff to bite even when puffing like a steam engine. The nutty burley flavor came through and stayed consistant. I found the heavy-ish molasses/cocoa flavor to be quite a delight but it might be a bit over-done for some palates. I had expected a mess of sludge and goop toward the end of the bowl from the heavyish casing but it burned right down to the bottom of the bowl to a nice gray ash.There wasn't much of a Vitamin N hit, but I think I may have a high tolerance for same. As for room note, it doesn't seem heavy or really pungent at all. For me, it's an enjoyable, non-pretentious and uncomplicated smoke. I have to admit that I reserve a bit of each 8 oz order aside to blend in some Revelation Match at about 5-1 ratio for something similar to - but less bitey than - Eddie G. Robinson. I was looking for another codger burley-type smoke to add to my rotation and have found it in ERR Match. I was pleasantly surprised by it, and if you try it maybe you will be too.

My father was an Edgeworth fan for a long time. He smoked it consistently throughout the 1950s so consequently when I started trying my hand at pipe smoking I gravitated to what he recommended. While this match version is close, it lacks a little bit of the fullness and body of the original. That being said, it is still a good old fashion American burly pipe tobacco. It burns consistently and cool. It remains pretty tame as burly based tobaccos go. It has hints of molasses and chocolate in it and the flavor stays from start to finish. It isnt wet or sloppy and packs reasonably easy. While it is not quite as I remember the original, it is a nostalgic tobacco that takes me back to a time when life was simpler and I was a young dude enjoying the company of a pretty and very plump young red haired girl who had a thing for the odor of pipe tobacco. IMHO, if you are a fan of original, pick some up. You probably won't be disappointed.

I have not smoked the original nor Lane's version so this review is based on the blends merits only. This is a pretty standard burley and Virginia blend topped with a chocolate and molasses flavor. You get a cocoa taste similar to Prince Albert but with a molasses undercurrent. I enjoyed this blend and I think you will too.

This is a very nice VaBur. The topping is lightly done. A bit of molasses and a wee touch of cocoa. The Burley is nutty and very mildly earthy. The Virginias are a little citrusy with a touch of hay and a mild sweetness. Makes a nice "messin' around in the garage" smoke. I never smoked the original and I didn't want to buy a whole tub of the new offering by Lane so I opted for this just to see what the fuss was about. It's a solid 3 star smoke.

Mild to medium in body and taste. Flavoring is mild. Burns well.

I can't compare it to the original but on its own it is very good. I love burley and this ticks all the boxes. Pouch aroma is very straight forward and hay like. Nutty, mildly sweet and natural tasting. The cut is easy to pack and light. Not complex but who cares. If you like old fashioned tobacco you will love this. I am looking forward to trying the new Lane Ready Rubbed.

This is the first of several "Match" tobaccos I'll be reviewing. I've recently purchased five of them from P&C, they are: Edgeworth Ready Rubbed, Revelation, Country Doctor, Barking Dog and Model. Since I've never had Edgeworth before, and since I'm the most curious about that one, I've decided to start with it first.

Let me say, right off the bat, I really enjoyed this tobacco. The choco-chunks of burley and additives really hit the spot. The flavors, a little bit of chocolate, molasses and, for me, some black licorice. I guess I would classify this blend as a semi-aromatic rather than a full aro. This baccy really worked well in my MM Country Gent (with filter. In fact, that worked out so well I intend on smoking all of these match blends in a Country Gent).

As many of you know by now, I've become a real purist, scorning most tobaccos that have large amounts of "spicing", but, this blend is less saturated than many current day offerings, in fact, I don't believe they blend'em like this any more (this is like smoking history). I can see why many lament the loss of the original, for if it tasted anything like this, it's a true loss to the pipe smoking world.

I've never had the original, and that's a shame, but I really appreciate the fact that a match for this is still being blended—kudos to whomever has decided to do this, and, keep it going! I'm looking forward to trying the other blends. I give this one a strong three stars (I even briefly thought of giving it four, but, hey, it's still early in the game).

This is a four start blend for me not because of what is was but what it is now. Milder blends and some aro's are looked down upon by some as not having huge Wagnerian flavor profiles that define the milestone BIG blends. I will offer that we are burning stuff in a small chamber and huffing that smoke directly into our faces. While I make this a hobby it never ceases to amaze me. I suggest to the reader that defining each level of appreciation is art and science and finding balance is key. Maybe in my next life I'll smoke the labels off of CatsPaw ropes and plugs but for now I can enjoy this tasty blend all day long and never for a moment fake my enjoyment of it.

This review is based on a one ounce fresh sample. I have never smoked the original.

The tobacco may have been rubbed out, but it’s now cubed. It lights easily, and I rarely had to relight. I filled the pipe by simply scooping it.

It tastes nutty, but there’s a mild sweetness to it. I also sense a pleasant, light amount of cocoa/chocolate. It burns at a moderate pace, but stays cool. It’s never harsh, even with quick puffs. There’s a moderate amount of nicotine, but it’s not overwhelming. However, it does get strong towards the bottom.

I would recommend this to burley lovers.

Having now smoked the original ERR, I can say the Match is very close to the original. Perhaps the difference is due to age. The Match was of a recent production. Whereas the original was from 1973. If I’m still around in 2063, i will revisit these blends.

No nonsense easy to pack. Burns effortlessly and cleanly leaving white ash. Classic burley nuttiness in abundance that really remains consistent the whole smoke. Not complex and on the mild side. As good, if not better than SWR. Great in cob or briar. Not to be missed by Burley lovers.

Edgeworth RR Match … Back when the original was popular, I never remember trying ERR, or for that matter never even seeing it for sale in my area, so the best I can do here is talk about what I found in smoking the new match product.

While browsing the P&C.com tobacco listings, I found several match blends that I could not resist trying, one being for Union Leader and the other this one. I must say I'm not disappointed with either one.

The tin/bag aroma is pleasant Tobacco/cocoa mix. Comes as easy to manage smaller cube cut of a mostly dark brown color. Now having smoked at the very least 4oz of this stuff, I come to see this blend as a mild and very worthwhile smoke, best enjoyed when I have some time to sip and taste, not because a more rapid puffing rate produces bite, but the flavor wants to drop-off as the heat increases, thusly missing all the varied flavors the blend has to offer. I did find some cocoa taste in the smoke, bite was no issue and a good burn was had without much fuss. But IMO I found this tobacco a bit low on it's "nic" level.

I ordered four ounces of this from Cup o Joe's, to see if it was in fact like Edgeworth Ready Rubbed.

When it showed up, it looked like crushed plug, much like ERR and Sir Walter Raleigh.

It had the faint smell of cocoa, just as I recalled.

Upon lighting it is very similar to Edgeworth RR. It simmers well in the pipe, and I find it to be a pleasant and enjoyable experience. As Briar Rabbit pointed out in his review of Edgeworth, it does taste a bit like spicey pecans. The cocoa undertone is present throughout, and I found it highly enjoyable

Towards the end of the bowl some liquorice flavor peeks in, and there is a gentle molasses sweetness that pervades my taste during the whole bowl.

Up close, the room note is pleasant, but after leaving the room and returning, it is a more neutral pipe tobacco smell.

Puffed slowly and gently, it is a pleasant and inexpensive companion. It is excellent with a cup of black coffee.

If you miss ERR, drop six bucks and see if this makes you happy. It is certainly worth a try. Having smoked it a while, I have become very fond of it. My next order will be for a pound.

Very good burley based blend with deep Molasses and chocolate flavor , this stuff is incredible with coffee. The taste also remind me of graham cracker . I Smoked bowl after bowl to compare with Lane Limited Ready Rubbed , in my opinion this is a step better the cut is fun to work with ( Note that i never taste the original Edgeworth i'm only reviewing these 2 on its own)

Sutliff - Match Edgeworth Ready Rubbed - I am reviewing this tobacco on its own merits . I understand this is an OTC type blend . Comes in bulk with large cubes . It burns fine , no problems mechanically . My problem is with the taste . I love my Burleys but this one is not for me . It starts out fine with a cocoa hit like the pouch note . After it gets going the flavor from there on out is very chemical tasting to me . I guess it is supposed to be molasses or anise ? I don’t care for it at all . Carter Hall still being a good smoke for me . This goopy mess is headed for the trash bin . I guess I am in the minority here but that’s fine with me . To each his own . Only my opinion of course . 1 star is too many .

Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match is what I would call “granola cut”. It is very similar in appearance to other burley blends such as Sir Walter Raleigh, as it is mostly broken round chunks of tobacco that closely resembles granola. There are some smaller flecks and cube cut pieces as well. The moisture from the bulk bag is usually nice, and doesn’t needed any drying time. The tin note is very strong cocoa and molasses, along with some nuttiness from the Burley.

Upon lighting you are greeted with the mahogany burley. It’s nutty and chocolatey. The topping is noticeable in every puff and is of molasses, cocoa, and maybe a light touch of anise. It doesn’t really fade as you smoke the bowl down, leading the taste to be very consistent down to the end of the bowl. I believe the topping helps amplify the natural flavors of the Burley so the flavors of the tobacco and topping marry together well and at times can be difficult to distinguish. Overall the flavors are very full, especially for a blend in this genre.

Edgeworth Ready Rubbed Match can be a little difficult to light due to the cut, especially if there are larger chunks at the top of the bowl. Once you get it going though it stays lit very well. I find it smokes best lightly packed. It does not bite but can get a little rough if over puffed. It has a little bit more nicotine then other similar blends in this genre, but I could still smoke this blend all day. 4 out of 4 stars.

I’ll keep this review short because it is a very simple bend and one that I love. I smoked the original from time to time in the early 1970’s. As far as I am aware, it was only available in slices at the time and was considered a rather high class tobacco at the time. While it was a good smoke I didn’t really appreciate it at the time because my taste in tobacco hadn’t matured yet. In any case, I honestly don’t remember what it was like - it’s been a long time now. On a whim I recently ordered a pound because I prefer Burley and the reviews were good.After smoking it regularly for a couple of weeks, it became my very favorite blend and I bought two more pounds. I also have a tub of Lane Ready Rubbed. Some reviewers say there is little or no difference and I disagree. While the Lane’s cut is different and makes loading and lighting a bit easier, it doesn’t have the subtleties of the Sutliff. The cocoa in the Sutliff version, while mild, is more present than in the Lane and there is just a bit more sweetness. The Sutliff has a bit larger and chunkier cut but once well lit burns just fine and at a moderate rate. If I could give it five stars, I wouldn’t hesitate. This is my favorite tobacco as a confirmed burley smoker and is now likely 90% of what I smoke.

Found this to be very enjoyable. Start with the cut. Cubes and broken flakes rubbed out to a chunky mixture. Loading a bowl best to just scoop it up with just a very light tamp. Takes a light well and stays going. When lit coco, chocolate, and molasses mix in with burley. Great combination. Not overly sweet or strong Burley. I've never had ERR or LRR, so I can't compare to them, but on its own merits will give high marks. I've been having several bowls daily and greatly enjoying each one.

After having smoked the original Edgeworth RR back in the 1980s, the Lane incarnation ERR, and the newer Lane Ready Rubbed I certainly wanted to try this. My 4 ounces appeared a little chunkier than either of the Lane varieties; similar to the original cube cut but not totally a cube cut. medium brown in appearance with a moisture content good for smoking. There was definitively more of a cocoa smell than any of the other ERR varieties and a bit of a menthol-like smell (perhaps anise?). Loading and lighting were no problem. I couldn't get much of a Burley taste, or any true tobacco taste for that matter, out of this one. What I described as menthol-like was all I perceived throughout the smoke. I didn't taste any chocolate, molasses, or typical anise as such. Not bad for a "set it and forget it" type of a smoke, but due to its lack of Burley/tobacco flavor I'll pass on this one for the future. I actually like the newer Lane version better than this. As an aside, I find Peter Stokkebye's Cube Cut Burley to be closer to what I remember of the original Edgeworth RR. Although the price point was good, I rate it at 2 stars.

Well...anything I could write has pretty much already been said in the reviews that have already been written. I pretty much agree with all the positive ones. This tobacco is GREAT!! Now I am referring to the match blend by Sutliff. I was never lucky enough to have tried the original blend. When I first opened the pouch and smelled the leaf I was greeted with a kind of flowery odor that reminded me of Mixture 79. I thought oh boy...this is going to be terrible. I absolutely hate M79. However...I packed a bowl and sparked a match and was immediately elated. What a wonderful taste. Smooth, nutty and mildly sweet. The first couple of centimeters had a tiny bit of bite. But after that it got milder...smoother and just downright delicious...all the way to the bottom. It was a tad moist out of the baggie and I did have one relight. But after that it smoked all the way to the bottom evenly to a gray powdery ash. It reminded me a bit of Prince Albert Choice. But it has a character all its own that is noticeable and unique. Very mild but not wimpy. Solid and sturdy. A comforting smoke that will leave you wanting more. From what I have read in the previous reviews Sutliff has done a fine job recreating this wonderful blend. In fact I am enjoying my second bowl with my coffee as I write this. Sure makes a superb start to your morning ladies and gentleman. Do yourself a favor and try this blend. I don't think you will be sorry. For some it may not turn out to be your go to smoker...but I bet you it will end up in your regular rotation.

Not quite my cup of tea but this is a very faithful match to the last iteration of Edgeworth Ready Rubbed by Lane Ltd. In fact, I would say it is better than Lane made it in terms of cut, less larger chunks and a better moisture level, not as dry. The flavor and aroma are almost identical from what I can remember. Aside from the mild cocoa note there is a somewhat unpleasant characteristic earthiness with hints of black pepper and an almost cardboard/paper quality especially when puffed too hard. Aside from those issues, I have to emphasize how well it has been reformulated in respect to its predecessor. If you like typical non-aromatic cocoa cased burley blends i.g. Sir Walter Raleigh Regular, Mac Baren Golden Xtra, this is up there with them.

I stayed away from burley blends for years. Recently, I decided to try some and I am glad that this was one of the blends I sampled. Match Ready Rubbed is a comfortable blend. It is easy to light, burns smoothly, and delivers that Burley arome that I remember my grandfather smoking in his corn cobs. This is very easily an all day blend.

Normally I am not a burley fan, but this blend really caught my attention and has become a bulk purchase. Best way to describe it:

Long-smoking, a nice nuttiness to the burley (and not the bitter, walnut shell kind of nuttiness either, which I am not a fan of) mixed with hints of cocoa.

Recently purchased this as I found that most retailers have stopped carrying Lane Limited Ready Rubbed. The tubs that were available for purchase were either higher than normal price, or included ridiculous shipping costs.

This blend smells near the Lane product, dare I say possibly even better.

The blend was a tad moist, however a quick light removed most of the moisture. Presented with some nutty and woodsy burley flavor with a slight note of cocoa and a bit of sweetness likely to be molasses.

Great replacement and overall a worthwhile budget blend that I can see myself stocking up as long as I can find mason jars.

A nice all day Burley with a pleasant aroma and taste. The burleys are nutty and earthy with some sweetness from the molasses. There is some cocoa flavoring but it plays second fiddle to the molasses. No bite at all and a good value for someone who wants a simple codger Burley to puff on all day.

This is my all day burley blend. Everything bout it is great. The price, the tin note, flavor, and room note. The cut makes it an easy pack. Takes a flame well, tastes of wonderfuly mild earthy burley w a touch of cocoa. Not to strong. I often fi d myself think of the next bowl while I'm still smoking a bowl. That is the ruler I measure 4 star blends with. If you like burley try it. I caan see why this was so popular for soooo long.

Summary: easy-going bulk Burley/Virginia mix that tastes like hot cocoa with marshmallow. Still too much goop for me.

We all like the idea of the simple life. Roll out of bed on a Saturday, head on down to the corner store for a paper and a packet of tobacco, then load the pipe and go for a long drive. As far as OTC blends go, this one is fairly archetypal: a sweet-nutty flavor with a chocolate and vanilla flavoring that contributes a great deal of sweetness. It burns easily and delivers consistent flavor, so if you wanted something to smoke while thinking of entirely different things, it is perfect because the blend basically smokes itself. The only glitch is that it is light in nicotine and still too heavy in goop, which makes it sugary instead of having any depth of flavor. This is where it falls to "Prince Albert," although it would be great if that (stronger, less gooped) tobacco came in this rough cube cut! "Ready Rubbed" could be a top-ranked blend if not for those little glitches, but as it is, I wish it were available in the shops because sometimes you just feel like something uncomplicated.

This burley does not seem to be heavily cased. The smell is of chocolate and some molasses. It is a very chunky cut that does not require further rubbing out but you can if you want. Not too sticky or goopey. Packs and lights easily. Flavor is typical burley. Very smooth. Very much like ERR or LLRR. To my tongue this is smoother than SWR but I get more nuttiness from SWR. Sutliff compared to LLRR is very close. Not sure if I could tell the difference if I were blind folded. This is a solid smoke that you can enjoy whenever. Nice and cool and the room note is easy on the nose. Only bites if you puff WAY to hard. Strength is decent but nothing that will overpower you. I like it. Probably will conduct a smoke-off with back to back bowls with this and SWR to see how they compare. Definitely more body and strength than PA or CH.

Since I do not have a highly refined palate, it's hard to describe tastes and flavors that I experience. I only know what I like and do not like. So here's my rating scale and a brief reason for the rating.

★★★★ = Excellent - Apocalypse blend, cellar worthy.

★★★☆ = Good - Not part of regular roatation but keeping a few tins/ounces is wise.

★★☆☆ = Fair - A smokable blend that is worth trying again.

★☆☆☆ = Poor - Do not smoke! Trade off or give away to the unsuspecting.

Because tastes and blends change over time and depending on what pipe is used, I reserve the right to change my rating at any time.

A great tobacco. Great morning and mid day smoke. However, it just could not deliver a great nightcap smoke like some other Burleys can. It tastes of cocoa and cedar. A must try tobacco for smokers of all walks.

I am welcomed by thick cubes and ribbons of tobacco with a very present cocoa smell. At first light, the molasses and cocoa is the first thing I taste, afterwards I get some burley nuttiness with a faint anise/liquorice finish. It's a mild tasting tobacco with a casing that overtakes for the most part. My biggest complaint is the fact that in mid smoke the pipe gets clogged from the casing which for me is a big turnoff. I really wanted to like this tobacco, oh well... another disappointment.

Well, it's been almost 40 years since I had the original, but this "match" brings back nice memories, it's close. I'm typically not a Burley fan, as it's hard on my tongue, but this was no problem. It smoked cool and easy. As I smoked , the flavor brings back memories of "Pencil Sharping's" , it's actually very pleasant. This was a nice moment back in time , but,......I do have other blends that I crave more than this today.

Update, 04/01/2015: I have settled on this as a daily smoke. I have found that it needs to be smoked in a dedicated pipe to get the full flavor of the tobacco. The chocolate/molasses taste only increases when you do. Although I'm not ready to increase my rating to four stars, I am able to whole-heartedly endorse it as a throughly enjoyable smoke for when you have other things to do than wallow in a tobacco's complexities. Really good stuff!

Original review: I have been casting around to find a replacement for Sir Walter Raleigh regular since I have been disappointed with the current production of that blend. Somewhere I read that this is similar.

The cut of ERR Match is similar to SWR, but the flavor is not. I cannot entice an earthy tone from ERR like used to come from SWR. The burn of this ERR is very much like SWR, but the mouth feel is lighter, less substantial.

I do not mean to imply there is something wrong with this blend in and of itself. It behaves well, burns relatively slowly, doesn't bite, and has a pleasant flavor. I like the cut of this blend. It is mild enough (the nicotine level is fairly low) and has enough interest to be an all-day smoke for some but not for me.

I will not allow my disappointment at this being no replacement for what I remember of SWR influence my rating. Certainly this is a worthy blend and could appeal to many who like a light burley, lightly flavored. Recommended.

If I smoked Edgeworth back in the day, I don't remember it. In general, though, I agree with SopwithCamel's review -- basically a decent generic burley mixture, with hints of cocao upfront and a little anise towards the bottom. Burns a little on the hot/fast side for me, hence two instead of three stars, but no bite.

Smells sweet, of tobacco - specifically burley - with some cocoa. This is nowhere near as wet as I'd expect from a flavored tobacco. The nic is not too high, this smokes mild, smooth, and pleasant. It has a cocoa flavor and is reminiscent of Bob's Chocolate Flake without the Lakeland flavor.

So I don't have a clue where I got this but I was cleaning out some of my ancient tobaccos and found a one ounce beat up old baggie that had a hole in it with about half the tobacco spilled out. I started to throw it away but thought I would just smoke it up. Baggie said "Sutliff Ready Rubbed Match" so I assume this is the blend. Opening the baggie I got not much aroma other than perhaps some molasses and even a dab of coconut. I will say this was totally dried out and lit very easy. I have no idea if this is an aromatic or not but it certainly taste like one. It appears there is very little cavindish in this blend. There is a nice slightly sweet taste (molasses) with a hint of coconut in the background. It will burn a bit on the hot side if not sipped slowly. The taste, while not overwhelming is tasty. Near the end of the bowl I lost most of the flavor. The room note is nice with a hint of coconut. This is not a bad blend at all and I expect I will now purchase a little more to smoke from time to time but not in my full rotation. Overall this is a three and a half star smoke and I am glad I found it hanging out in the bottom of my cellar.

This blend was so so. It was very dry, and stayed lit well. I understand this was Norman Rockwell's favorite blend. It has a burley taste, and thats about it. If you are a burley lover I recommend this blend.

small cubes and a few crushed plugs. smells lightly of cocoa in the bag. very easy to pack and simple to light. burns cool even when puffed quickly. first puffs tastes a little like sir walter raleigh but the the mild topping burns off fast. one third of the way into the bowl you are rewarded with the taste of light molasses and plain old burley goodness that stay with you until the end. i did not pick up on the anise that some users stated. i do recommend this but i am not sure if i would buy a large quantity of this or a big ol' tub of sir walter raleigh. it would depend on which one was cheaper.

What I am about to say is probably tantamount to heresy…I hated this blend. I am clearly in the minority, but my observations are quite similar to the few haters out there.

The pouch note is a pleasant melange of prune, raisin, and molasses. The cut is almost like a crumble cake that has been partially crumbled. Ribbons mix with cubes, larger chunks, and dust. I can see the comparison to grape nuts with the chunks and cubes. I have found that many Sutliff blends are dusty. Unfortunately, this dust and tiny flecks make their way through the stem and into the smoker’s mouth.

The tobacco is a little sticky to the touch. The molasses topping is detectable and I did not find it pleasant. The smoke tastes of plastic and chemicals at times. There are some notes of toasted marshmallow and some pleasant bitter notes. Smokes wet and needed way too many relights.

I first encountered this blend about three years ago. Lil Brown was selling it under the Consolidated label as Ready Rub Edgeworth.

I received a package today wondering if it was different from the Consolidated version.

There are two problems with this blend: it does not really taste like the ERR of old; it does not taste of anything very much.

I am going to keep it for a couple of years, let it dry out (it is sticky fresh out of the bag) and try it again. But for now, there are better blends.

Update Tried this blend out in one of my old Rocky Briars, and something clicked. Though not exactly like the famed Edgeworth of yore, this match blend turns out to be excellent in its way. Update to three stars.
