This blend has been around forever, and has been enjoyed by many generations of pipe smokers. I looked up the date that it was first introduced to the market, and near as I can tell it was first introducted in 1912. Ever wonder how a blend remains a top seller for over 100 years? Simple, really - it's very good. EMP is very good - very, very good.

I think that it's been so popular for so long because of its simplicity. It's comprised of Virgina and Oriental leaf. There may or may not be some Latakia in there, but if it is it is only in trace amounts. The color is a pleasing blend of brown and tan tobaccos, and the tin note has a nice Oriental sweetness to it. There is also something vaugly smoky in there, and that may or may not be Latakia. Whatever the case, it's just wonderful. The tin note doesn't really translate to room note, because the room note is just a light tobacco aroma. Very nice. Call it cigarette-like if you care to, but to me (and my wife) it's just a pleasant tobacco aroma.

This is not a blend to smoke if you're looking for some sort of deep experience from your pipe, or you want to play with a broad palate of nuanced flavors. This is a blend to smoke if you just want to mindlessly enjoy a bowl of tobacco while reading or just bumming around the house. True to it's name, it is jut awesome in the early morning hours when you have nothing to contend with but peace and quiet - and a good mug of coffee. In a way, it has a classic OTC character to it. Just fill, char, tamp, light, and puff away. No need for fancy packing techniques, no need for constant relights, and no need to concentrate on it to try to pick out it's sublte hues.

I'm of that generation that was brought up to believe that Dunhill tobaccos are the pinacle of pipe tobaccos. I still think that they are shining examples of class and sophistication, where less is more and elegance is best expressed in an understated manner. (What C&D and Pease blends want to be when they grow up). This blend is no exception, and it is Dunhill's answer for the discriminating pipe smoker who wants a blend that he or she can just kick back and enjoy in those rare moments when life, family, and career are not imposing their demands upon us... those early mornings when it is just us, our cup of coffee, the morning paper, and peace and quiet.

But don't be put off my the "morning" conotation to it, because it is enjoyable thought the rest of the day as well - when all you want is just a nice bowl of tobacco to enjoy on your smoke break, lunch hour, or just doing nothing but enjoying a pipe.

This tobacco was good so good, that it reminded me of a time long ago....

Place, Vietnam. The Year is 1965. The Month, June. Day: The 7th; AKA Day 282 in 'Nam for me. June was the rainy season for 'Nam. I had been given some leave time from my base in Saigon and so I went to explore the City, like usual, my buddies didnt get leave, but I hoped to find some more GI's in some of the local bars. It was unseasonably dry that day. No rain. It was nice for once to not deal with dagum water in the shoes. I felt good, like it was going to be a swell day; I had every reason to think so. A week before, I had killed 10 Charlie in one night. I was satisfied. And now I had leave, who could ask for anything more?

I stopped in at a bar in the East Side of Saigon called Do Phing Pan Ngo, where all the action was. The bar was bustling with GI's. Different guys trying to sweep some exotic doll off of her feet and into the bed. I had similar plans. I walked to the bar and ordered myself a tall one, ready to relax and find a target. Then it happened. She walked in lookin like something out of a dream. So gorgeous, she was with her sexy Vietnamese hips and supple behind. I knew what had to be done. I ordered another beer, and started over to her. Just before I did, some officer cut in front of me. Dam. He had beat me to the punch. I was just a lowly grunt. There was nothing that I could do. The babe started shooting me looks as the Officer was talkin her up. I knew this would be my only chance to get laid until i was sent back into the jungles to fight charlie. Charlie would always be there. This doll wouldnt. I made my move. As I did it, I felt my balls grow 3 times larger. A grunt was about to steal a woman from Officer. I approached her; didnt say a word and just took her hand and left with her, leaving the officer to shove it. I led her off to a small hotel room where we made love with out even speaking. We made love many times before the morning of the next day came, i wish I could remember the number, but I lost track after 30. I would have set a company record.

As she is there sleeping I got up to watch the sun rise over beautiful Saigon, with a gentle mist sweeping the rooftops that morning and I smoked a fat stogie in honor of my recent accomplishments. It was the most incredible feeling in the world, despite my man tool nearly falling off. The beautiful woman was still asleep after having the night of her life. I dressed, and left the room, but not before leaving her my picture so that the kid would one day know who his or her father was. And with that I left, returning to base and eventually leaving 'Nam, never to return.

Early Morning Pipe felt like that special morning in Saigon.

The Cyprian Latakia is smoky, earthy, woody, musty sweet as the lead component. The red Virginia is a little tangy, dark fruit sweet with some earth and wood, while the lemon Virginia adds light tart citrus and grass as supporting players. The red Virginia is just a little more noticeable than the bright. The dry, slightly sour and buttery sweet, earthy, lightly floral, vegetative, barely spicy, woody Turkish/Orientals competes with the Virginias for attention. The strength is a step short of the center of mild to medium, while the taste is a couple of slots past that center. The nic-hit is a couple rungs past the mild mark. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace with a very consistent mildly sweet and savory flavor from top to bottom. Requires an average number of relights, leaves little dampness in the bowl, and won't bite or get harsh. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste, and room note. By design, it's an all day smoke. Two and a half stars.

The Murray's version was much richer in flavor, and I give that production three and a half stars. But the difference is not night and day.

EMP is a unique smoking experience as it contains all of the elements of what should be a strong blend, yet Murray's was able to pull back on the throttle just enough to give the smoker an "English" experience without being obtrusive.

EMP is mellow, mild, stays lit well, and delivers a sweet and unique taste seldom found (if ever), in any other blend of this type.

Update 2/17/14

Chanced into this from someone that was curious about how I felt H&H Daybreak compared to this. I haven't finished that tin yet but I smoked enough of this to re-familiarize myself with it. My original review stands, as I find this too limp-wristed for me. It has a gorgeous sour and thick tin aroma and an excellent room note as well, but the flavor is just too light. I can certainly see why it has it's fans, but it just isn't for me. I sure wouldn't mind being around someone who was smoking it, though! Dunhill latakia blends have a certain pungent tin note that Orlik has maintained, but this one is all aroma, little flavor IMHO.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 7/8/09

Let me put my bias out in the open and upfront: If a blend is going to contain latakia, it must either contain enough to drive the blend OR the other tobaccos must be flavorful enough to pick up the slack. Otherwise, what you have is a bland, dull tobacco blend. Such is the case here. I realize this is supposed to be light and mild, as a "first smoke of the day" but this blend would put me back to sleep. I find little going on here, other than a possible palate cleansing to separate two bowls of zestier tobacco blends. This was a Murray's era tin, by the way.

Ok, another bias - I'm no huge fan of Dunhill tobaccos as a rule. If they came back only with Elizabethan and 965, I would not miss the others at all. There's nothing really wrong with them but there's not much to recommend them, either. This one appears an afterthought - as though they decided they simply HAD to offset the heaviness of Nightcap (another uninspiring blend) with something wimpy and bland. There's red virginia in here??? They covered it up nicely, but how and with what?? Nothing asserts itself here.

Finally, some objectivity! My biases aren't necessarily yours. A lot of people like this and if you enjoy light, mild balkan blends, you should definitely give this a spin. Hopefully you like it more than I did. I'm packaging up what's left of my tin and shipping it off to a friend who enjoys it.

Appearance: Typical Dunhill broad ribbon cut, about 70% medium and light leaf, 30% dark.

Aroma: The Virginias seem to be on the sharrp side, rather than sweet and mellow. There is a fairly good Latakia and urkish presence.

Packing: Packs easily into medium and large pipes.

Lighting: Again, typical Dunhill. Always needs a full charring light. Slow, steady burn rae follows immediately.

Initial flavor: First taste is slightly harsh, not as gentle as I expected. There is more strength of flavor here than in Std. Mild Mixture.

Mid-bowl: This is not my wake up pipe tobacco. It seems to be more of a medium blend, but harsher than most other Dunhill?s. There is nice complexiy from the condiments, but the sharp edge keeps me from enjoying it. It also causes me to produce more saliva as a reaction to the flavor.

Finish: Even harsher at the end.

Summary: Not a nice tobacco at all, IMHO. It needs more mellow red Va. to smooth it down. It?s hard for me to imagine why this is as popular as it is.

I'm new to pipe smoking, and have smoked cigars in the past and always enjoyed the more fuller tasting ones. I haven't a clue as to why people that are new to pipe smoking are always told to start with an aromatic. I've tried and smoked at least a 1/2 a dozen aromatics and always found them lacking something. Sure, the g/f always mentions how great they smell, but when I'm smoking them I can't smell a thing.

And then there was EMP....I bought an ounce of EMP to try to "venture" out in the "English" blend world, and I have to say, it was a good thing I was sitting down when I had my first light of this magic. Not because it's strong, but I was so surprised at how great it tasted. Nothing like the aromatics I've ever had. The smoke was tasty, and a more complex than anything else I've smoked in the past. The taste and smell of the latakia, and the orientals really played their parts well. I sat there for a good hour enjoying the hell out of my first "real" bowl of tobacco. The next day I ordered a full pound, and threw out most of the aromatics I had.

They say you never forget your first love, and I think this will have to be mine.(in regards to tobacco that is) There's always have a place for EMP in my cellar.

If you're looking to move beyond aromatics to dabble in the realm of the English blend, what better way than to purchase a tin of Early Morning Pipe from one of England's most renowned tobacconist names? Dunhill is as synonymous with tobacco as Nike is with athletic footwear. It's the perfect place to start when seeking an introduction to English blends.

Early Morning Pipe is great on its own, but I found it wanting a little help from its big, grizzled brother, Nightcap. Adding some Nightcap to Early Morning Pipe is like putting a leather jacket and red bandana on Basil Rathbone...

About a month ago I found myself in a curious predicament: I had half a tin of Dunhill Nightcap and about three-quarters of a tin of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe. The Nightcap was a tad too strong, the EMP was a tad too soft. So what did I do? I mixed them together in a large mason jar with the intent to establish a nice medium-bodied Dunhill English. And the result has been absolutely wonderful! Matter of fact, it's the blend I smoke most often.

I've ingeniously dubbed it: "Early Morning Nightcap."

So if you, like me, find Early Morning Pipe to be ohhhh soooo delicious but maybe a bit too soft, mix a little Nightcap in there with it, christen the blend "Early Morning Nightcap," and there you have it, a beautiful Dunhill medium-bodied English blend that smells and tastes as good as you could imagine.

One of my favorite English blends. Complex, shifting flavors. Very well-integrated Oriental tobaccos with a restrained Latakia element. This is my favorite Dunhill, and Dunhill's only Latakia blend that I like. It was one of my first tobaccos, and has stood the test of time magnificently.

Many say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Since I am reviewing this while smoking what little EMP I have left, I guess it could taint my review. I have always loved the Dunhill blends, especially EMP. It leads with wonderful Orientals with the Virginia's and Latakia playing great supporting roles. EMP has a subtle sweetness with a "leathery, toasty" taste. The topping is, I am nearly sure, a fine mist of scotch applied so lightly that the spirits flavor normally found in some blends can easily be mistaken for something else in this blend. I find Red Rapparee as my new "go to" in this category. EMP will sadly be missed. Like many folks, I have sent a note of protest to BAT. Hopefully they will sell the blend to another manufacturer.

UPDATE 2/10/11. I enjoy the Orlik EMP very much. It is my desert island smoke. I disagree with those that say this is half strength and half taste of the Murray's. I think that opinion is true of the Orlik 965 but not of EMP. I have smoked EMP every day of my pipe smoking life and tasted an entire sleeve of Murray's side by side with Orlik and Orlik might be just very slightly lighter, but its so close that I think many would have a very hard time in a blind taste taste. Don't be swayed by old memories. Still highly recommended!

The textbook light English blend. The standard. If a blender can beat it, they've done something extraordinary.

EMP is perfect. Perfect moisture and cut, so it lights and burns easily. Perfect use of a little Latakia to round out the flavor and cut the edge off of the Orientals. Perfect use of tangy, mouthwatering Orientals that never smoke bitter or acrid. Perfect blend of bright and red Virginia, lending that malty sweet red VA flavor to the back half of the bowl.

I understand the hit-and-miss reviews, lots of folks have palates that aren't tuned to mild blends. I sometimes smoke a full Balkan for breakfast, I could see how EMP would not scratch the itch if that was what you were looking for. However, it makes no sense to sell this blend short. There are lots of sins a blender can cover up with a Lat bomb or by using overpowering flavors. With EMP there is nowhere to hide any mistakes - the blend is in such careful balance that flaws would be overwhelming, but there are none.

This one I judge reviewers by. It's like Casablanca, some film student can say that they didn't like it and I won't grumble, but if they've got to be contrarian and say that it's shit I don't need to hear their opinion any more.

Really enjoyed this blend for the mornings, or anytime during the day. You gotta be in the mood for it - it's got a sharpness to it. Smells great in the tin, and tastes delicious. Mild, toasty, sweet hay, easy smoke. Left a slightly sweet taste in my mouth as an aftertaste which is not a bad thing! Fine white ash in the bowl. Room note is slightly on the cigarette smelling side, however. Can get a tad bitter - but mostly good sweet and tangy tobacco smoke.

Dunhill Nightcap is one of my favorite tobaccos, so I've been anticipating this blend for a few weeks now. Tin notes, leather, raisin, and pear brandy(?) - some kind of fruit sweetness with an alcohol/phenol bite at the end. Faint smokiness, and big bready/yeasty strawlike compounds.

Initial char, hey... where did the brandy go? I'm getting rye bread with lots of caraway seeds, roasted marshmallow, and as I work my way through to midbowl, a strange nasal curry spice, like fenugreek or brown mustard with lemon. It's really good. I'm also getting a little burley burp, but that's probably more because I went straight to a bowl of this instead of coffee and breakfast. There is a slight spice, and a slight smoky flavor, but I'm still getting mostly a very subdued English flavor from this tobacco. Room is roasted marshmallow and fruit brandy.

At the bottom of the bowl, the phenolic sweet flavor got a bit more intense, that is to say, I could actually taste it. Everything started to come together wrapped up in a neat little bow, but then I started tasting burned maple and realized I had sadly hit the bottom of my new cob.

All in all, the tin description of "delicately flavoured" is spot on. I'm surprised how prevalent the "rye bread" notes were, that's pretty much exactly what I thought of Nightcap, however Early Morning Pipe was much more subdued and mellow, and the topping (if there even is any) was so mild that I really didn't even taste it until the last 3rd of the bowl. I was half expecting to hear Edvard Grieg's Morgenstimmung as I puffed this morning, but nope, just a good tobacco and landscapers trimming my hedges at 7:15am.

Been smoking this pretty regularly for a very long time (first tin in the late 70s). The blending notes always, until the switch to Orlik, included latakia. i don't care what anyone says, there's still some in every batch. Regardless, still good at any time of the day. I'm a sucker for light English, oriental forward blends and this does very well. As others have noted, it can get a bit bitter towards the end (last fifth) of the bowl if smoked in anything larger than a mid-sized pipe.

This is a very pleasant low content latakia blend.it has all the quality standards of dunhill blends.nice cut,right moisture,easy to pack and light.burns cool and slow, won't bite if you go hard.virginias taste perfect with sweet notes,grass and citrus.latakias aren't dominant and offer camp fire and sweet wood notes.an all day blend to me,pleasant room note a must try to get into light english blends!

I would like to thank you all for your reviews. I have purchased about 15 different 1 oz blends to try and saw this one recommended to explore the English blends. Here is some background to make reviews more meaningful, I wish we had some fields for it as it seems very reasonable that new smokers who are new to pipes may have some general trends in preference that differ from people who have smoked pipes for as long as I have been alive.

Background: I am 46, have newly taken up pipe smoking and have only otherwise smoked a few cigars (perhaps 20 or so ever). I would estimate that this is my 11 or so pipe bowl total (not just for this blend).

Impressions, Purchased one Oz baggie, was dryer than other blends I have gotten but not completely dried out, I don't yet have a sense for what the preferred humidity norms are. I found this blend flat and kind of boring. Other than when I breathed out (clean) air through my nose, I couldn't detect the latakia at al, it IS there ... but barely. Otherwise I found the taste to be mild tobacco, but otherwise kind of boring and un interesting. For context, I liked 1Q but it had only a little taste, but was pleasant and very slightly sweet. I liked Longbottom Leaf from JFH even more because it was similar, just with the volume slightly turned up. This EMP was in no way unpleasant in taste or room note, but it seemed like smoking to be smoking. I'm wondering if my addition to spicy food has left me tongue deaf! ALso, its too bad this site doesn't (seem) to have a forum for exchanging tobaccos that we have tried and do not prefer.

Well....as a new piper this is about my 10th tobacco. I had already decided English blends are my thing. I thought this would be a little lighter than mm and London mixture and certainly it was, perhaps too far. Lovely pack and burn. No relights. But..... An almost cigarette room note and smoke. I packed it more heavily thereafter. A better result but still some mild disappointment. I shan't reinvest in a tin, back to a heavier blend.

Dunhill - Early Morning Pipe.

One of my first reviews that seemed rubbish, so I've had another bash!

The ribbons are on the smaller side, so there's no chunks or clumps in the tin; it's practically a shag cut. Moisture can't be faulted, it's a case of 'open, load, and light', without wasting any time on airing.

On to the smoke: it's a fairly full flavour, but I get no sharp/harsh notes of Latakia, I'd call it a milder English. To me, the flavour seems totally natural: I get no undertones of added flavouring, or anything. I enjoy the first few minutes, but then I begin to notice the heat from it, and this lessens the rating. Also, if I'm honest, the lack of Latakia piquancy begins to bore me; I want to turn down the Orientals, and crank up the Lat'!

The room-note's not too good, and the nicotine's medium.

This is a top quality smoke, it just isn't my idea of how an English should taste. Taking any subjective factors out of the equation leaves a four star blend, but it's worth only two stars to my taste.

That, in my mind, makes three seem fair!

Recommended.

A lot has been written about it. In the 80s and 90s it was part of my rotation and I have not smoked it since. Recently I bought a tin to go for it once again, just for a change and revive memories.

It’s a straight forward English mixture, very simplistic though. No complexity of aromas. Nevertheless, nice Virginias and nice Orientals. I cannot make out any Latakia. But there could be a little fire cured Orientals that deliver this hidden smokiness. What I particularly like, is that touch of sourness, that you first smell when opening the tin and accompanies the taste when you smoke it. It may originate from a different fermentation of some Virginias. There is some sweetness, too, but quite discreet. The sharpness rather comes from the Orientals.

EMP is a good smoke for in between. Not for those special, relaxing, delightful moments. EMP has been on the market for one hundred years, it definitely has its place among the classicals.

I really like this blend. I might even grow to love it someday. Although the Latakia is light, it's always present. The Orientals add a nice sour woody touch. I can't say that I can taste the Red Virginias, but the Brights are very clear. They make this blend for me adding wonderful sweet citrusy notes that counter the other components perfectly. This is a great flavor profile. I like strong blends in the morning and evening and mellower fare in the afternoon. This fits nicely in the afternoon slot. 3.5 stars.

One good thing about a lock-down is that it gives you a lot of time to go through your tobaccos and smoke them as if stress never was invented.

MP is good. You notice as soon as you light up and taste hay and citrus and freshness.

The tin promises enjoyment, it smells so good and balanced and of orientals.

It can be packed quite tightly, must be in order to keep it lit all the time.

The first puffs are light, the peppery smokiness is only in the nose if you retrohale.

As you progress the smoke becomes heavier, smokier and spicier. The taste intensifies. I suppose that's why it's called early morning pipe: it gradually wakes up with you.

It's medium to strong, stronger as the bowl gets emptier. Likewise its taste develops from medium to strong.

No flavouring other than the orientals.

The man who sold me the tobacco said that the smoke would keep the mosquitoes away. He clearly didn't care for MP. I quite like it's smoke, tolerable is say.

It delivers what it promises. Highly recommendable.

Early Morning Pipe is a blend that is supposed to be on the mild side, smoked as the first bowl of the day. Thus, this will not be a heavy English; not even a medium English, which is why this review should be examined from what it is supposed to be: mild, and that, it is.

This blend is slightly oriental forward, offering those typical woody, sour, yet subtly sweet notes from the Orientals, while the mixture of red and bright Virginias offer the bed upon which the orientals sit. The Virginias are musty and earthy, with a hint of grassy citrus notes coming here and there from the brighter Virginias. There is hardly, if any, Latakia in there, but I would say that there is a touch, giving the blend a touch of smoke, bringing everything together. About halfway down the bowl, the Orientals smoke a bit sharper, which can lead to a bit of harshness depending on your cadence and how you are smoking it.

The Dunhill ribbon cut is phenomenal, leading to a very easy pack and light. Further, their moisture from the tin is nearly perfect. The controversial nicotine level from this tobacco is somewhere just above mild, I did not notice any effects, really.

Overall, this blend does what it is supposed to do. For me, I found it only a bit harsh and sharp directly from the tin, which could improve some with age, but an enjoyable smoke for the morning or when a very mild English is in order.

Update 04/25/2018: Aging this tobacco helps greatly. I lit up a bowl of a tin that I opened at the end of August 2017, and even this short amount of time served to mellow the blend in the areas I described as "harsh" before. Possibly deserves to be bumped up a star...

Summary: a sweet English blend with less of a Latakia blend and more presence of Orientals, with the Virginias leading.

Dunhill tobaccos are known for their elegance and simplicity, and this blend benefits by showcasing its powerful sweet and rich Virginias but using slightly less Latakia than a full English with a higher proportion of Orientals, giving it a sweet-sour taste with the smoky Latakia backing that up. With the characteristic thin cut and perfect moisture balance for which Dunhill blends are known, "Early Morning Pipe" lights magnificently and burns evenly. As the bowl goes on, the Latakia flavors become more pronounced but also less acidic, bringing out more of the smoky taste than a tangy one. The Virginias caramelize and meld, becoming less sugary and more like honey bread with lemon, upon which the Orientals continue to build, making the mixture more tangy and addictive over time. Many combinations of these flavors appear in ephemeral form, barely grasped before they are gone and not forgotten but reduced to vague impression like waking after a dream.

Known in the hallowed halls of Pipe-smoking geekdom as “EMP” – Early Morning Pipe, as the name would suggest, is artfully blended to be enjoyed as the first pipe of the day waking up the palate with a full-dose of Oriental and Turkish leaf backed up by a mix of bright and dark Virginias brought together by a generous bit of Latakia.

Despite the name, EMP is not a beginner’s top-of-the-morning smoke unless you consider MMA fighting a mere 'scuffle'. It’s a medium-bodied blend that delivers a good hit of nicotine (that’ll wake anyone right up) and is quite powerful although not as nuanced and enveloping as London Mixture, for example, but very much related.

With less Latakia than London Mixture, and certainly Mixture 965 (Dunhill’s “Latakia bomb”) the Orientals shine through bright and clear with an almost creamy mouth feel. Smoke it hot and it'll put a million pin-needles in your nostrils however... this blend begs for a slower puff and a larger bowl to truly get all the layers to unfurl fully.

Why do most bonafide wine collectors and cognoscenti revere Burgundy? For the same reason this is one of many pipe-smoker's go-to blend and it's easy to understand why.

In fact EMP was a blend a took to early, and sort of left it as I began to experiment more and more with the likes of Pease's, McClelland, and H&H's other English-Orientals... and yet I always come back home to EMP.

Like a doting wife of fifteen years it's easy to take for granted and forget just how much magic there is in a bowl of this stuff with so many newly-fangled blends out there with cuter names and snazzier packaging. But the classics are the classic precisely because they are timeless.

I've moved from buying this by the tin to getting it by the pound. Yea, it's that kind of blend...

RECCOMENDED FOR... those who love a particularly flavorful and big smoke. THIS IS NOT MILD (IMHO) like many people will suggest (I suppose if we're comparing it to Nightcap then yes it is mild-ish, but then again calling this a mild blend utilizing Nightcap as the definition of a standard 'full-bodied' blend is like calling Megan Fox a plain sort-of-girl in a spectrum that ends with Sofia Vergara)-- which is to say, there is a whole word of tobacco out there, strength-wise, before EMP's nod on the richter-scale. This is a medium-to-full bodied blend and sometimes a bit too testicular for the mornings; but just goldilocks right for all day smoking (and room clearing).

Any similarity between this and the original Dunhill Early Morning of years gone by is not even in the realm of possibility. This stuff, made in Denmark is apparently residue from the floor sweepings of the old Scandanavian blends. I smoked Dunhill for years and even had several private blends with them. This is not even close to anything Dunhill ever put their name on. Newbies may like it for the name but certainly not for the reputation. Ordered 8 ounces of this stuff and am still trying to find someone I dislike to give it to.

I highly recommend the blend as I do any of the famous name blends among pipe tobaccos. And don't get me wrong I do enjoy it and it does share an affinity with coffee. My only problem is that I find that Squadron Leader fills this niche better for me.

With all of that said I have wonderful memories of looking out over the northwest Michigan woods this summer at my 80 acre retreat (deer camp) watching the sunrise after restoking last night's fire. With a cup of coffee in one hand and a pipefull of EMP in the other. I didn't pack any SL on that particular trip, but it didn't matter.

I don't know anything about this blend before Orlik, but I do like it as it is.

Well, a classic English blend. Fresh outside the tin you can smell the orientals and the latakia. Red Virginia is present but not dominant when you light it up. If you choose to cellar this tobacco, it's going to develop a sweet taste and the leatherness of the latakia will fade away but in a positive way.

Burns cool without any tonge bite.

The stoving deepens the sweetness of the Virginas and Orientals, delivering more of an earthy and dark fruity notes. I find a hint of light brown sugar as well, possibly from the stoving. The latakia is light but always present and very supportive. The orientals are spicy, earthy, and makes this blend feel more as lighter London Mixture (which I long to return). A favorite light English blend and stands up to its reputation. You've probably tried it but if not, every pipe smoker needs to.

This is the first premium pipe tobacco I ever bought, purchased from a local vendor, before I started handing over my military pension every month to smokingpipes.com and 4noggins. (That first tin bought in Canada at market price cost me $50!) For about the first month of my pipe odyssey this was the only thing I had to smoke, and I soon became very bored with it. This may be no fault of the tobacco. Anything can become boring, I guess, if it's all you have. Just ask most married people. (Though I should say that I love my wife and would have no other, unto eternity, amen.)

Hearing of the imminent (supposed) demise of Dunhill tobaccos, I bit the bullet and cellared a few more tins of Royal Yacht, 965, Nightcap, Durbar, etc., but held off on EMP, making a bulk purchase for immediate evaluation. I have to say, I looooooove the way this stuff smells. I've already developed a certain amount of nostalgia for the tin note. And I realize this is not meant to be a full-flavoured, "deep" experience. As a light english, I suppose it fills a niche. But there are just sooooo many more superior blends available on the market today, and so many I haven't even tried yet, that EMP, at least in its current Orlik iteration, doesn't make the cut. I'd much rather smoke Meridian or Red Rapparee or White Knight, etc. Maybe the comparisons aren't fair, but the bottom line for my pallet is that EMP simply lacks much flavour and becomes tiresome in fairly short order.

The other thing is, since I'm not a morning person, this product seemingly lacks applicability to my life.

Update 2018-10-13

Went back to this jar of EMP, and what do you know? the flavour has opened up quite a bit. It seems to me like all Dunhill tobaccos need about 6 months in a jar before they taste like much. I've actually been enjoying this in the mornings (what do you know?) now that fall is in the air. (Plus my wife and I have had our first child so mornings — of necessity — have become a thing for me...once in a while.)

When I first smoked this (as a newb) I guess I was expecting more smoky Latakia flavour, but I appreciate this for what it is, which is mostly a virginia and oriental-dominant blend, with a bare smidge of Latakia. I've seen this compared to Royal Yacht, which I couldn't understand in the least at the time, but now, it seems the Virginia component here is in the same ballpark, and maybe even has a bit of the same sauce on it. I still find this very light in flavour, and it seems (imho) to have — like — zero aftertaste. Nevertheless it's good for early morning dog walks, and (like most Dunhills) nothing else really compares to it. I think this blend does exactly what it is meant to do, and if that's a worthwhile trait, then it's hard to fault it. I'm upgrading my rating from 2 to 3 stars, but I think this needs to be aged before it's really any good.

(I've recently purchased a few tins of this because it is about to go extinct!)

"Do yourself a favor and buy this tobacco. It's better than sex." category for this one. Very spicy, sweet, smoky, burns ultra fast. On the second part of the bowl the fragrance reminded me of the pleasant smell of a burned spruce/pine cone.

I smoke this tobacco every morning as my first pipe, and sometimes in the evenings as my last. It is perfectly consistent, never fails to burn down to the bottom, and is forgiving of lazy pipe filling. It has just the right mix of oriental and latakia tobaccos to hit the spot, without being overly tangy or smokey. I happen to be especially sensitive to nicotine content, and I find this blend to be fairly mild as long as I am not greedy or in a hurry. Near the end of the bowl I will start to get that familiar nicotine tingle, but it never sets me spinning(I am looking at you Nightcap). I have also never gotten bitten by this blend, no matter how reckless I am with it.

Great all day tobacco for me, and is what I usually recommend to those wanting to dip their toe into English/Balkan blends.

This is a classically English blend. When I think of what an English should taste like, this is what I think of. Yes, it is a lighter English, but that is the point of the blend. If you are like me and love a pipe in the morning but don't like the heavier blends early on then this is a blend for you. It has a mild sweetness about it which I like. The Latakia has notes of campfire, earth and are a little sweet but does not overpower the Orientals and VA. The Orientals have a slightly sour note that reminds me of butter milk (in a good way). The VA's add some complexity to the blend. The red is tangy and slightly fruity. The lemon adds citrus notes and notes of hay. This blend is complex like a Davidoff Classic is complex. Mild does not mean bland. If you are newer to the pipe you will miss all the nuances, but with time and patience it is a wonderful first bowl of the day. The finish on this is short for an English blend and I like that because it allows me to pick up another blend and not loose everything it has to offer which is unlike what many English blends tend to do for me.

I love this blend. Early Morning Pipe has been one of my favorite mixtures for the decade that I have been smoking. It's light, subtle, and simple. It's clear in other reviews that this is an issue for a lot of pipemen. For me, however, this is it's strength. It packs easily. It smokes so easily, so effortlessly, that it's hard to for it to turn on you.

This is a tobacco for the beginning of the day, when blowing out your palate with a full flavored leaf is ill advised. This is a blend that you can puff on while you go about some chore or duty. This is a utilitarian blend to be smoked when the act of smoking your pipe isn't your focus.

Finally got to try this tobacco as it is very hard to get in my country. The excitement was high, given it being one of the most famous tobaccos around. The tobacco in the tin is your standard Dunhill ribbon cut with varios grades of lighter and darker brown.

The moisture level was almost perfect out of the tin. Packing was very easy.

Lighting was effortless and it stayed lit very well. Needed only a few relights throughout the bowl.

Now to the bad points. I was very disappointed with the taste. Actually, there was almost nothing to taste at all. There was no sweetness from Virginias, a very subtle taste of orientals and I could not taste any Latakia at all. There was some bitter sourness in the taste and I could almost detect menthol like taste in the smoke. Very weird. The tobacco is quite strong in nicotine. Tried to smoke it after a meal and still got buzz from nic hit.

The room note was tolerable.

Only few times I managed to smoke to the end of the bowl. It is very harsh in taste after two thirds of the bowl. Definitely will never buy this tobacco again. I don't get what the hype is about this tobacco, there are so much better tobaccos out there.

I only had a sample of this but enough to make a mark on me an to write a review. This is another awesome blend. No aromatics. The tobacco heap in my hand was just ..... oriental. Its like walking somewhere in the middle east; or maybe on a tour of Paul's missions to Laodicea, Philippians, Corinth, back to Syria. OK, so the Oriental / Latakia is there. And I like that lot. The same notes of the fresh tobacco was also the room note.

The nice thing is; that "overpowering" Oriental smell was just rightly balanced in the bowl. You smell it when you exhale, but on the palate, a well balanced smokiness and a touch of sweetness. I don't know if it was the coffee or the tobacco, but I had a lingering and satisfying sweet spicy creamy after taste on my tongue.

I can see why its Early Morning - the tastes you like (Latakia & Oriental), yet not in quantities that will shock you back to reality.

Highly recommended.

This is a superb blend that is flavorful but not too strong. A mild English blend with rich flavor. And what a glorious aroma! Great for all hours of the day. Doesn't need any special drying. Consistently great flavor,especially good in older English pipes. I've stopped smoking anything else. It gradually builds in strength as you move from the top to the bottom of the bowl, but never is overwhelming. If you like Squadron Leader,Skiff, Rattray's Red Rapparre, 221 Baker street, King Charles and the like, you must try Early Morning: it is the most flavorful of the bunch. Note: this blend is, in my opinion, superior to the old Murray blend: the ingredients are of higher quality and it is much smoother than the older, greatly over-rated blend. The only other blends in it's class are Dunhill's London Mixture, which has too much Latakia for me, and Dunhill's Royal Yacht, which is similar but with added sweetness. p.s. when E.M.P. was unavailable, many other companies tried to replicate it--with very limited success. I've noted some peppery accents in the middle to late bowl. You should go for the original & best.

A fine blend. I like this as a wake up but I would think this might be too strong and maybe too much smokiness( Latakia?) for some in the early morning . I love the stringy cut that makes packing and lighting easy. Immense smoky Oriental flavor with a slight sour lemon background . Although Latakia is not listed , I find this smoky .Allow this to breath some in the tin before you load up or it will steam. No bite, big flavor, smooth, all day anytime smoke.

It's a great "on the go blend" no messing around rubbing it out, charing lights , tamping, just stuff the pipe, hit it with a match and smoke. When packing, I like to roll the tobacco in a tight ball and stuff the one piece into the top of the bowl. This method tends to smoke slower and less ashy.I Always have a tin close at hand.

Do you want something milder but similar, try Germains, King Charles Mixture?

While I can't find any strong fault with this baccy, I can't find anything with it to get excited about.

Came a little too dry, Packed and lit easily, but doesn't stay lit well. Taste seemed a little fruity to start out, went bland by the half way mark and got a little nippy close to the bottom with a slight bitterness creeping in. The Virginias were there until about half way down and then there was no obvious distinction of any particular tobacco.

My overall impression is of blandness. According to some of the glowing reviews below, maybe I had a bad batch but, I can't really recommend this above 2 stars.

The first tobacco I tried after many years of cigarette smoking.

The tin has a great smell, but when smoked it is rather bland.

Not as mild as someone might expect, but I prefer stronger and tastier stuff like Nightcap.

As a whole, a well-balanced, pleasant tobacco: sometimes I like to smoke it. It is simple, never boring, and in some moments of the day it is just what I need, but not usually the kind of taste I am looking for.

UPDATE February 2004: With some more experience, and some slower puffing, it's actually quite a tasty blend. It's quite stout and "heavy" on the throat and palate, and quite nicotine-laden. Its toasted/oriental taste reminds a bit of Gawith's Squadron Leader. It can get a bit bitter towards the end of the bowl.

One of the most stable Dunhill products, quality wise.

UPDATE February 2011: After having enjoyed the most recent version by Orlik of London Mixture, I decided to give another try to this classic. Well, it seems that Orlik did a good job in recreating it! Sure, the tobaccos could be more mature, but the percentages are spot-on, and the recipe seems faithfully recreated. Actually, I find it smoother and creamier than some of the late Murray production! This version is just as deceptive as the older ones, in that it's not as light as the description would suggest: actually, it has a nice medium body and taste. The "delicate" in Dunhill's description is just to say that it's not a Latakia bomb, although the smoky weed sure is present together with a fine array of orientals. Nicotine content is not so low as some might think, and IMHO it's better as an all-day mixture than something to smoke "early in the morning". Certainly stouter and "more English" than, for example, GLPease Piccadilly. Funnily, too, I think it's stronger than London Mixture (which is MY idea of a mild though tasty Latakia/Oriental tobacco). This recent version has a great balance between sweet and rich Virginia, the nutty and slightly salty orientals, and the right amount of smokiness. Good job, Orlik. What it lacks is the incredible refinement, evolution in the bowl, complexity and taste (without the "thickness" on the palate that EMP sometimes can exhibit) of Samuel Gawith's stunning Skiff Mmixture. While the two tobaccos can be comparable in basic purpose, composition and "philosophy", the Skiff has a particular extra charm and magic of its own (which the Dunhill probably had some 20 years ago too but somehow got lost). Oh, well, anyway it's a return to form, and I could almost (barely) raise the rating to a "Recommended". Just don't make the mistake of thinking it's a mixture suited to a beginner wanting to explore the world of English Mixtures strating from something light and easy: it may disappoint due to its lower Latakia content, and scare because of its thickness and (relative) heaviness. But if you have the experience to appreciate its nuances, it is doubtlessly a quality tobacco... just not the best around in its genre (for that, go to Skiff Mixture or GLPease Westminster). And I still DO think it's a bit too heavy in nicotine, especially compared to the supposedly stronger London Mixture... Regrettably, I haven't had the opportunity to smoke it when it was still a Dunhill blend, so this review is based on it Peterson-brand version.

It is a very elegant blend, quintessentially English, if you will. Restrained, but packed with flavours. Stronger than I expected for something that is meant for the early morning. Full-bodied and definitely mild, this is an all-day smoke.

The Latakia is barely noticeable and it serves as a condiment, definitely not a Latakia bomb. Orientals really shine, giving the blend a nutty taste, Virginia provides some underlying sweetness, and Latakia adding a bit of smokiness. Very satisfying!

I have no idea why it has been rated so low by some of TobaccoRevievs' luminaries. For me it is a very welcome addition to my rotation.

Try it, it will not disappoint, Definitely a four star tobacco.

UPDATE: I have smoked this blend in a few pipes now. I will be stating the obvious when I say it must (as any other tobacco) be matched with the right pipe. My best match was a Mountbatten pot, with a very generous (broad) bowl. Of course, it might have been the briar quality. Anyway, the difference in taste was substantial, depending on the pipe used. So, please, try it in several pipes before you review.

As one of Dunhill’s most successful tobaccos, I was glad when Peterson brought it back. While not terribly complex, there is something for everyone to like here. Not heavy at all, it’s a blend that lets your mind wander, perfect for reading a book or other task that requires most of your attention. My favorite blend that contains Latakia.

EMP was my first love and the one blend that really got me hooked to pipe smoking. I do still enjoy it every once in a while (surprise: especially as the first bowl in the morning with a nice cup of tea) but have since come to appreciate other fairly mild English mixtures even more (e.g. Rattray's Red Rapparee).

A solid 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Update 10/2020: AdmittedlIy I was enthused when I heard that EMP would be back under the Peterson brand. This was the reason I revisited this particular blend. Alas, while the first few bowls very quite convincing, I quickly grew tired of the blend. It just lacks the "je ne sais quoi" that other of my favorites possess. Consequently, I will have to downgrade this to 2.5 stars despite my great recollections of my early pipe smoking days and the pleasures it once offered me.

Following the expert advice of a gentle Armenian tobacconist, I first fancied this delicious and elegant smoking experience in 1967, just a couple of months after receiving my college degree. Until then I had only been exposed to aromatic OTC American and Dutch tobaccos.

This was a true awakening experience. I left the store with several tins, including: Balkan Sobranie, Night Cap and 965. I always remember how this gentleman guided me into the latakia and oriental realms.

After decades of sporadic close encounters with this fine product, imposed by my demanding globe trotting profession, two years ago I was most fortunate as my brother got me two tins of this precious ambrosia from an expensive NY outfit. ($20 each).

Today I have just finished one tin. After only few lightning strokes, I am actually enjoying a peaceful early morning smoke while typing this note, but do not feel compelled to engage in any comparisons to discern the nuances with my past experiences. Actually: I do not give a damn! It continues giving me the most gratifying bliss.

Of course: four stars

Mixed feelings about opening the second tin...

Hi,I have been a pipe smoker for nearly 40 years and I have tried many different kinds of pipe tobacco:aromatics,english,oriental,perique,Belgian Semois tobaccos. After all this time,I only smoke EMP anymore.It is my favourite pipe tobacco. It is not too heavy,nicotinewise,it has a full taste,it is not displeasing to others in the room,it burns well and it is readily available.As someone noted before,there is a reason that this tobacco has a more then 100 year history.I travel a lot and always have my EMP with me.It is true that this tobacco is a great introduction to English tobaccos for new pipe smokers,but my case shows that even seasoned pipe smokers like myself greatly enjoy this ancient product.I see it as my old dependable.

Over the past few months I've gradually progressed from aromatics to light English and Oriental blends and a few flakes. So the time came to order a tin of 'Early Morning Pipe' and see what all the fuss was about.

My first surprise was when I opened the tin and found tobacco cut into such thin little ribbons. When I picked it up it reminded me of RYO tobacco. In fact if I had some papers I could have tried rolling a cigarette.

The second surprise was when I loaded up and smoked. This stuff smoked so fast it disappeared in a flash. Wow - one moment there - the next moment gone. I was so surprised I just stood there wondering what on earth this stuff was. So I tried again, and again it smoked so fast it was gone.

Luckily I'd just bought a slightly larger pipe, so I tried EMP in that and the smoking experience was much better. This is a tobacco that, due to the very light ribbon cut, either needs to be packed expertly or smoked in a larger pipe.

Once the packing and pipe have been sorted, the smoker will be rewarded with a distinctive, pleasurable smoke that has a slightly 'sour' edge. This sourness is something the smoker will either love or hate. For me, EMP has gradually become a regular daily smoke and I find the taste satisfying and moreish.

There's usually a reason why a tobacco becomes a best seller and remains so for a long period of time. In EMP's case it's due to the particular cut which when packed properly produces nice clouds of medium strength slightly sour smoke which leaves many smokers just wanting to load up and smoke it again and again.

Tin note for me is is quite nice. Slight smokiness, ever so light Virginia hay and that wonderful slightly sweet/sour oriental. Packs and smokes nicely with only a couple relights. Taste for me is oriental forward with slight Virginia sweetness followed by a soft Latakia. Overall this is a good mellow smoke.

Peterson- Early Morning Pipe

This is one of the essential English blends, that every pipe smoker should at least try.

Not overly smoky, some sweetness from the Va’s and overall a great mix of components.

Having smoked both the Dunhill and Peterson versions, I must say that they taste quite the same, age may change the profile slightly, but the quality leaf is still intact.

I started smoking EMP in the 70s. It was one of those I most enjoyed. Then AD stopped the production and it is only now that I try it several décades later. Kind of "proustian" attitude in opening the tin and recognizing the smell with the Latakia as dominant. Smoking it is - as in the 70s - a pleasure for those enjoying a not too strong English mixture. It seems to me that nothing has changed and that I am still a young man...

This is truly a delightful blend and is aptly named, as it is perfect with that first cup of coffee in the early morning. Early Morning Pipe is a very light and mild English that is well balanced and has plenty of flavor. The Latakia is present but is not overpowering, the orientals bring a little spice with slight floral essence and the virginia adds just the perfect amount of sweetness to tie it all together. Each component of this blend is masterfully balanced and its lighter flavor makes it a perfect summertime English. The Dunhill ribbon cut lights easily and stays lit, does not bite even when pushed, and burns down to a fine white ash with zero dottle or moisture left in the bowl. This is simply a pleasure to smoke from the first light to the last puff.

Just had my first tin of this, which is a bit odd after 4 decades of pipe smoking. Was expecting something too mild to be of much interest, but as I should have learned over the years, what the tin says, the name of the tobacco, and other people's reviews can be incredibly misleading. First off, I was surprised by the solidity and weight of the flavour - not limp-wristed and light at all, but solidly medium. It has been my experience that well-blended and well-behaved tobaccos often tend to be described as 'mild' in reviews. I think they are often so described because they lack course and irritating elements and seem to smoke more agreeably, not because they are actually mild. That's the case here, IMO. The taste is pleasantly full, nutty, and with the required creaminess of the VA detectable. It burns steadily and without bite. I definitely get a hint of Latakia in the nose, but not enough to spoil the balance. Nice interest from the 'orientals' but without any of that pepperyness or aggressive spiciness they sometimes ruin other tobaccos with. Bloody good job from the blender.

This was one of my first tobaccos I ever bought, is my all time favorite.. the tin note is sweet almost like sweet raisins and earthy. It packs well and lites well. The smoke is cool and earthy sweet with a bit of a woodyness to it. It is very pleasant in the room and actually has a good nic level to it but most definitely not over the top so early morning pipe really does fit the description.. if you can find tins of this buy them. This blend never disappoints morning,noon, or night it is always a great smoke..

Warning: my tin shows that Dunhill - Early Morning Pipe is produced in Denmark rather than the UK. For your guys know and I don't wanna edit the tobacco profiles anymore.

Moisture: the new tin may be a little wet and need some air time.

Cut: beautiful ribbon cut and easily packed

Burning: classic

Tin note: woody and sour, a little bit grassy, with the subdued smoky aroma, if not unnoticeable.

When smoking: the Oriental is pretty dry, woody, a little bit sour and the Virginia is tangy, and a little bit sweet (very hidden); the Latakia is few and smoky, if not unnoticeable. I need pinpoint that there is pretty much harshness or muddiness, which does not come from when you are smoke but the aftertaste in your mouth.

I totally agree with Jimlink:” The dry, slightly sour and sweetly woody Turkish/Orientals are noticeable without being overwhelming, and the Virginias are choice cuts: the red is a little tangy and dark fruit sweet with a hint of earth, while the lemon adds a slight citrus flavor and grass.”

Strength: I also need pinpoint: although this may be a "weak" English mixture, it is not weak. Actually, it is pretty strong.

Conclusion: this is a strong, balanced, mild to medium body, medium deepness, oriental forward mixture with decent pleasant harshness or rough edge. I wonder the blender is not meant to make "weak" tobacco but lightly Latakia aroma, Oriental forward tobacco with some kick when the sun arises. Until now, it is the best Morning pipe tobacco I have found in market. Just the refeshing and pleasant rough edge intrigue me in the meanwhile make it not all day smoke for me.

My rating: Enjoy + Require buying → Three and A Half Stars Rating due to its rough aftertaste in the mouth. But if you wanna a refreshing tobacco in the morning and taste some beefy body and bold strength with some sharp edges, as a crowing rooster wakes you up, this may be your favorite.

Definitely get the light and red Virginia here. Quite simply tasty. Light on oriental and Latakia, but they are there.

I've been smoking this in rounds with Durbar and 965. All of these offerings have the same flavorings, just in different amounts of focus.

All are English type blends with Latakia and orientals. This one just stays significantly lighter on the Latakia and orientals, so the Virginia's are the showcase. I've come to find this one to be my favorite of the three as its not heavy and can easily be smoked all day.

This is the blend that drove me to the conclusion that people try too hard to categorize blends, or maybe that the way the categories are defined are kind of meaningless. I love so called "Balkan" blends...and this tastes nothing like what I would taste in those other blends. This is an oriental forward blend. It is subtle and mild. The tin note is so unique, I love the woody smell of the orientals. the Latakia is almost not detected but adds a sweetness to the scent. This is a woody, nutty smoke and as the name suggest is a great way to start the day. Goes great with coffee and has almost no nic hit.

I have done a 50/50 with London Mixture and it is an outstanding blend...but that is not for this review.

This is one of my favorite blends. I truly do start the morning with it. I am not great at distinguishing subtle flavors, all I can tell you is this is one fine tobacco. I buy it in bulk, it is a bit cheaper. I cannot smoke where I work, If I could this would be my all day smoke.

I generally prefer full strength blends with a higher nicotine content. This is one of the exceptions. There are also far more complex blends out there yet this is one of my all time favorites. A desert island smoke. The Orientals are pretty forward here with incense quality and an occasionally sweet vanilla-like taste. The Virginias are grassy and sweet, the Latakia is mildly smokey and woody. The smoke has a smooth buttery quality. Bulk EMP smokes as well as the tins and EMP smokes beautifully in any pipe. Five stars out of four for me!

I like this stuff. I can't explain way though. Just overall a good earthy blend. I have noticed that the bulk and the tinned blends are a little different from each other but I guess that's just from the bulk being able to breathe. Both are good though.

This is a great, mellow English. As we can see, much ink has already been spilt reviewing this classic blend, so I will be brief. The main thing that I'd like to add is that as someone who is currently not a heavy latakia smoker, I can confirm that latakia is certainly present in this blend. That seems to be an open question for some reviewers. It is included with a light hand indeed, but it is definitely there. I can see how latakia fiends might not be able to detect such a slight amount, but as someone who doesn't smoke it often I always notice when it is present.

I find the blend to be a refreshing mild English with a nice light Oriental/Balkan character. It is a rare combination in that it is fairly mild yet (IMO) also fairly complex and interesting. I would think that it would be a nice change of pace to add to just about anyone's rotation. Three and a half stars.

I'm fed up with the newer Dunhill blends from STG. They're not properly maturing the virginias which have a noticeable harshness similar to whole leaf tobacco. I think the remedy for that is give the tobacco a heat treatment to purge the volatile elements and/or extended aging. They're not making a close enough effort to recreate these blends. Murray's version had a high proportion of ready rubbed stoved red virginas that looked almost dark purple. This version is just ribbon. The latakia seems noticeably higher. All in all, the mildness and complexity of the predecessor isn't present in this newer version.

This rating is suprisingly coming from one that predominantly smokes full-bodied english and balkan blends. I am always happy to find a blend that SO EASY to smoke, yet still delivers enough taste to enjoy and want to buy more. This blend delivers that...reminds me some of the Frog Morton blends. For me, packed and smoked well right out of the tin. Wife like the room note, suprising because she never likes room note of non-aromatics. I would not hesitate to recommend this to any pipe smoker. Well done again Dunhill!

As I look to expand my pipe smoking horizons, I find myself gravitating towards many fine English blends. EMP is no exception. I ordered a tin online after reading some reviews and because of the Dunhill legacy of fine pipe blends. The tin note is not overpowering but the Latakia is quite noticeable. Slight grassy hints from the Virginia components also stand out. The ribbon cut packs easily and after a light tamp it took the match with no problem. The moisture content was perfect right out of the can. Initially the Latakia smokiness comes out but it quickly combines to make a well rounded taste. My wife walked out onto the lanai at this point and commented on the nice "campfire" aroma which was a plus! As the bowl progressed the creaminess of this blend made for a very relaxing experience. I am certainly not a tobacco snob and a relative rookie with non aromatic blends, but EMP kept me satisfied right to the bottom of the bowl. It burned cool with no bite even when I increased my pace a bit. There were occasional hints of spice but it was a truly smooth experience from beginning to end. Afterward, I could taste the lat lingering on my tongue with its lovely smokiness. I smoked this right after breakfast with a mug of coffee but I feel it would be equally as pleasing any time of day. I never tasted any of the earlier Murray version but Orlik seems to have done an excellent job of keeping up the Dunhill legacy. Highly recommended.

If you are looking for a light English to make the switch from aromatics to English blends, then this is the blend for you. It is not overpowering in any sense of the word in either taste or nicotine. It has just the right amount to keep things interesting. It lights well and stays lit with no further prodding. The moisture level for me is just right, YMMV. It burns down nicely to a fine ash at the bottom of the bowl. Recommended.

I like Oriental-forward mixtures a lot. This one just doesn't do it for me. I loved Dunhill's Standard Mixture Medium and I love others, like Presbyterian, Gordon Pym, McClelland's Wilderness, and C&D's Tuskegee Airman. This one just tastes muddled to me and I have never had a wholly pleasant smoke with it. It's not terrible, but just kinda boring. Overall impression: Meh.

My review is based on the bulk supply only and not the tin, which I understand could affect the taste.

Latley ive been going through the long time pipe standards...My Mixture' Nightcap, etc.. But after reading the reviews it seems even at $8.95 a tin of Early Morning could wait or be missed entirely. But it so happens my local Tobacconist added the Dunhill standards in bulk to their eventory, so about $4.50 an oz. it was worth the shot.

The prelight aroma had that familar Dunhill latakia smell. However when lit this latakia/va smell was mixed with a bitter taste. I thought my tastebuds were playing tricks on me. I wasnt impressed or pleased. It stayed bitter. Just read the last review and the piper mentioned "sour" yeah.... That!

A friend asked if he could try it. By all means... I didnt tell him my thoughts. He lit up and after a few minutes dumped the stuff out of his Peterson. What do you think? Bitter! He said, and reached for his whisky blend. The key word here pipers is BITTER. Not for me.

April 22 2014 additional review. I would take this blend to work and smoke it in a tiny corn cob on breaks. Its not so bitter in small qtys and seems to work better in a smaller bowl. Ive grown to appreciate it more... Im adding another star.

I used to like this blend more than I do now. I think, today, there are many other English style blends that are significantly better than EMP (you can check my other reviews for some of them). Back in the old days EMP was considered a mild blend, but no longer. Since returning to the pipe after having quit for almost twenty years, I find that EMP's nicotine level to be too high (nowhere near as high as Nightcap, however). I wish tobacco blenders today would produce more blends with less nicotine. Don't get me wrong, EMP is a quality tobacco, everyone who enjoys English blends should try it, but it's no longer for me.

I got acquainted with Dunhill?s Early Morning Pipe after trying two stronger Latakia blends: My Mixture 965 and Balkan Sobranie, so in many ways it was a very agreeable surprise to find an optional, milder smoking blend containing Latakia and Orientals.

A difference I find with many of its stronger relatives, is that EMP has a sharper effect on the palate immediately after lighting up. Not sweet, not dense, but almost thrifty, its components seem to incessantly compete with one another, as if seeking to desperately assert themselves before being gobbled up by the others. Mid bowl, however, the flavour settles down, achieving some nuttiness and strength but without entirely leaving the mild zone. Mild in this case is not equivalent to smoothness, and that is one of the paradoxes that quizzes me about EMP, for that initial sharpness seems to remain the only constant effect throughout the smoke and, by the end of the bowl, it can reach a certain degree of harshness on the bitter side. I also find it tends to burn a tad drier than other Latakia/Oriental blends, and in spite of the respectable amount of Latakia I find it difficult to reach the ?zone?.

Otherwise, it is a very lively and enjoyable smoke; a good change of pace when seeking to drift slightly from the more conventional blends of this type, and a recommendable overture to fuller English compositions. Maybe Dunhill?s idea was to create a smoking continuum, in which EMP opens the day, followed either by Apertiff or Standard Mixture Medium, finishing with My Mixture 965 or Nightcap. Nowadays I find that the transition from EMP to any other Dunhill Latakia blend has become too steep and radical for me. IMO, London Mixture is by far a better starting point, and virtually an all day symphony.

The mildest kind of Latakia blend, with a thoroughbred Dunhill finish. A perfect introduction to the English School, for people who are not accustomed to this kind of flavour. Personally, after years of smoking stronger Latakia mixes, I find this a trifle bland; even in the lightweight category, S. Gawith & Co.'s Skiff seems rather more interesting. But there is no gainsaying that satin-smooth Dunhill univocity [put that in your pipe and smoke it!] and this is recommended as the mildest kind of Latakia blend.

I smoked this in a long, svelte Dunhill prince, whilst sipping very dry, very cold champagne, and felt præternaturally suave. But why does elegance no longer excite us?

EMP has a mild but firm flavour and smoke. It burns evenly and softly and carries with it a mouth watering intriguing complexity throughout the bowl. The tobacco holds on to a consistent peppered spice that is hard to distinguish but it's soft mellow taste has a hint of spearmint and a freshness that stays on the palate after each bowl.

I have had a few tins of EMP and it is becoming a "must have" in the inventory.

The smell of pulling grass was obvious at the time of ignition, but it gradually weakened from the beginning of the formal period. The V grass used in this grass is very sweet, and the initial sweetness is almost close to the upper limit of English grass. There is a certain sense of stimulation in the early part of the nose, but it is much weaker in the middle and later part. The middle section is the main line of this grass flavor - rich sweet toasted air, in addition, the flavor has not changed much. Because the sweetness is still not low in the middle and later segment, it may even be a bit boring. It is worth mentioning that the strength of this road is not as gentle as its name, small mouth suction, otherwise it will be on the top of the head throat. Overall, this grass has not many characteristics, but as a daily rotation of pulling grass is still qualified. I tried the Peterson branded one. I liked it, even though I'm not a big English blend fan. It's called Early Morning Pipe, but it's not one I'd start the day with, personally. More of an afternoon smoke in my opinion. I've got more of a sweet tooth, so I'd go for something sweeter and more mellow to start the morning.

Give it a try if you're into English blends. No complaints from me.

Though one of the classics-- Im going to break out of the norm, and say this is a bit of an abuse of Orientals and Latakia. Compared to other Oriental/Latakia heavy blends, like Skiff Mixture, It seems as though EMP's Flavor isnt full enough, This does not make for it to be an unpleasant blend. This one of my first smokes, and a few jars will always sit on my shelf as a safe smoke on non-creative days. A solid 2.4 Stars.

Imagine you and your wife setting up your best friend on a date with your wife's best friend. The plan is that all 4 of you will go out to a nice dinner together. Soon after everyone is seated and the wine has been poured, your friend looks down at his phone for the entire night, and your wife's friend brings up politics. Soon everyone is frustrated, disinterested, and confused. In the half-yelling confusion, you spill your wine all over your wife's dress (a dress which she borrowed from the same friend sitting across the table). You and your wife escape, leave, go home and watch a movie with popcorn and cheap beer. You two look at eachother and say: "wow - what just happened?"

That is EMP. Ok, maybe not quite that bad. But I have to ask... what happened? Golden and matured Virginias taste great together. So do orientals and latakia. So do all these tobaccos when blended together into a nice light English mixture (see, for example, Presbyterian). But for whatever reason, it seemed like each tobacco was just not quite there - each one was just disinterested in the others. The latakia was not doing its role as a nice smokey seasoning. The orientals were just there, but did not wow me. I couldn't tell what the Virginias were doing but they seemed to not get the memo to bring their sweetness or grassy A-game to Peterson's all day light English mixture.

This blend aimed to be what Presbyterian achieved: an all-day, light English smoke. This objective was not aquired. But, as I said, you and your wife still made it home for popcorn, cheap beer, and a movie - so not all was lost. It may taste like smoking burned hot air, but the tin note and room note are pleasant enough. I hope I just got a bad tin and that I'm wrong in my analysis because after all the EMP hype, I wanted to love this tobacco. I just can't.

I have heard so many things about EMP that when I saw it at my local B&M I had to get a tin. I am down to the end of my tin which means I'll offer some thoughts.

As you first open your tin you find your tobacco in a fine shag cut. This is easy to pack, and in my opinion it came at just the right sort of dryness to pack in my pipe as is. The tin note is strongly Virginia forward, presenting sweetness and a light note of Latakia. It's easy to light and requires the average amount of relights.

I find the taste to be Virginia forward so it gets a slight floral note which is quite endearing. When I first smoked this blend I couldn't find any trace of the suspected Latakia, but as I have puffed away, there is a beautiful sweetness and light complexity of the smokey Latakia. I find the flavor consistent all the way through the bowl. No added topping that I could detect. Overall the taste is a medium/light. No tendency to bite. Lady N is not as strong in this one and it makes for a very pleasant all day smoke.

Overall I think this is a highly enjoyable blend and I would easily stock up on a few more tins.

I think of Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe (henceforth EMP) and Nightcap as sister blends; two sides of the same coin (I always tend to forget the third blend in what is actually a trio, The Apéritif).

I also think it's easy to romanticize these two blends. They're pretty much legendary, they have great names, the tin art is beautiful, everyone has an opinion. And there is something fascinating about two blends designed for smoking at specific moments of the day.

Now, Nightcap I love, but I've long been a bit unsure of EMP. It's so much milder, and there are so many other good light English blends. In fact, EMP has very often seemed to be too light when I've smoked it. It's one of those blends (like Presbyterian) where the latakia is more of a condiment than a main part, to the extent that some people are unsure if there's any latakia there at all.

I realised that I've almost always smoked it around noon or in the early afternoon. Should this matter? Possibly - probably - not. But I've spent quite a lot of time with EMP lately, and I have exclusively smoked it in the early morning. Before breakfast, with the day's first cup of coffee. Often in the still chilly spring morning air on my balcony. And I've really gained a new appreciation for it. I think it works very well on a fresh palette, not yet burdened by the tastes of lunch and breakfast. Pairs well with a strong coffee.

The smoke is rich and thick, the taste is musty and woody - I taste a lot of cedar wood in particular - from the orientals and discretely smoky from the small amounts of latakia. It's mellow and mild in taste and just under medium in nicotine. It burns extremely cool, not a hint of a hint of tongue bite. The room note is possibly a bit too much for those unused to pipe smoke, but pleasant for the smoker.

I'm currently smoking my last Dunhill-branded tins, acquired a couple of years ago before they disappeared from the market, before they were re-released under the Peterson brand. As far as I know they're still the same as it's still STG who makes them. As my tins are aged, I'm sure the taste I get has mellowed even further from what you'd get in a new tin.

Nice look when opening the tin - a nice variety of cuts and colors. Yellow to light brown Virginia and Orient shares, dark pressed tobacco slices and almost black sprinkles of Latakia; all smelling of sweet bread almost a bit like fruit jam.

Dried it out in the sun for a few minutes then stuffed in a larger bowl; loose and springy - works great. Takes flames easily burning slow and steady leaving only light gray ashes in the bowl and not too much moisture in a filter.

When burned the EMP is slightly moving up and down from spicy with a moderate lata note to a real sweet cake like taste. Hay; sometimes sweet pepper but always very creamy and tasteful.

A nice all day maybe, but not for those who like a good Latakia punch. Recommendable for novices who like to taste natural tobacco flavors. Best for me on a cool summer morning alongside a coffee.

I would consider this to be a good "All day" English Blend. I can generally smoke this before I go grouse hunting at 4 AM, and not feel green and nauseous. The smoke flavor is perfectly balanced. Not too heavy on Latakia nor too lacking. You can taste everything that is put into this blend easily. The Virginias give a nice hay flavor while the perique gives a slightly peppery finish.

Classic Mild blend from the colossus Dunhill.

A nice classic English Mixture sporting a distinctive herbal and malt flavor from its Virginias, well balanced with a little smoky hint of Latakia (definitely not too much) and natural aromatic spicyness of a good amount of Orientals.

The balance in flavor out of the tin corresponds to a nice variety of colors. When just opened it is less dry then other Dunhill blends like fabulous 965.

It could be indeed considered a good morning blend and a nice introduction to EMs for beginners. Balanced in flavor among all the different leaves it gathers, it is easily packed due to a thin ribbon cut, stays lit well and burns steadily.

Nicotine department is rather faint, but the taste is medium and really enjoyable by those who want to start with a good Latakia/Oriental couple not being overwhelmed by them. The Virginia leaf is malty, fresh and stays there throughout the entire bowl giving this blend a good balance.

Overall a recommended, balanced and very easy and enjoyable blend for everyone.

A good introduction to proceed towards more structured and deeply smokey Mixtures and flakes.

Early Morning Pipe was my first blend with Latakia some time ago. And I would recommend it to every young pipe smoker who wants to try an English blend.

When I smell on the tin, I can tell that there is apparently orients in it. There is some smoke, earth and a certain sweetness in the tin, which I can’t correlate with something. While smoking the tobacco, the Virginia plays a significant role in this blend. It’s quite sweet and tastes a bit like citrus fruits. There are as well some natural flavors like earth, grass and hay. The Latakia adds a smokey and woody taste, while it stays in the background. The Orient are clearer to recognize than the Latakia without being in the foreground at some point. They just add some dry sour spiciness to the tobacco.

Everything in this blend is perfectly geared to each other, which makes it a pleasant smoking experience all over the day. In my opinion, this is the best tobacco to start your journey towards blends with Latakia. After some days without an English blend I still like to return to them by smoking an Early Morning Pipe.

This is a tobacco that I’ve been waiting to try for a long time. Finally, I decided to open an aged tin (almost two years). I had to smoke half a tin, using four different pipes, with and without filter, in order to give a final word on this blend.

It is a renowned blend and appreciated by generations of pipe smokers more experienced than me and I didn’t want to hurry with a verdict, but here I am, coming with my own, personal and subjective opinion. What I like may or may not like to another, what I feel and what another feels can differ. Remember t his.

So... we open the tin after almost two years and we smell.... we take a good sniff and... no special smell coming. It has a normal tobacco smell, more like a rolling tobacco or cigarette tobacco, but with a slight smell of oriental and latakia.

At first, I had to leave it to dry for aprox. 15 minutes, but then I began smoking directly from the tin. Now, when writing this review, I’m smoking it directly from the tin, in a straight biliard pipe with the filter removed. I only needed two lights and everything went perfect. It burns excellent, you don’t need to relight it and it doesn’t bite at all, even without a filter.

I realized that smoking this blend without a filter brings out more of its aroma. I also recommend this to be smoked in a nice ambient, in your room, in quiet and peace, at night... yea, at night with Early Morning Pipe. You can smoke it very well in the morning too, with a coffee it goes great. But I prefer to smoke it at night when it’s quiet and peaceful, so I can enjoy the tobacco and pay attention to what I’m smoking, having my senses more developed at night when my mood is calm.

The first draws were easy, letting the tobacco to light up on the entire surface. Further, the next draws brought a cool, smooth smoke. All tobaccos can be detected easily, and are very balanced, none of them getting in front of the other, but they’re all making a team. It offers a slightly smoky taste, of burned wood and a slight sweet taste of virginia. It has “something of it’s own”, a taste that makes it pleasant. I begin to taste the latakia only after approaching the half of theh bowl and towards the end. If I take a break, it leaves a good aftertaste of latakia and oriental which I can enjoy even after smoking.

My personal problem with EMP is that it’s too light, both in strength and in taste. Being a smoker of strong cigarettes, I like to feel the smoke. Even when I smoke cigarettes, you won’t see me smoking Kent, Parliament or anything light with no tobacco taste. I smoke Marlboro Red, Chesterfield and Camel, strong cigarettes with strong tobacco taste. The same applies with pipe tobacco. I like strong blends. I love tobacco and I want to feel it at maximum intensity. And EMP doesn’t help me with this... After smoking Nightcap or Elizabethan, I was waiting for something special, but in my case, it wasn’t. In my case, this is a daily tobacco, which I smoke when I’m walking my dog in the park and enjoying a walk in fresh air. Yes, unfortunately this is too light for me, the latakia is hard to detect (i’m a latakia fan), so if you’re crazy about latakia and you like strong blends, this might not be your type of blend.

Yes, it’s ok to smoke in the morning, but not to wake you up like a cold shower, but to wake you up slowly, peacefully... but it is too vapid for me. I like it, it’s ok, but just ok. It didn’t blow me away.

The Room Note is quite pleasant. It’s a bit similar to cigarette smoke, so cigarette smokers would prefer this in the detriment of a heavy latakia blend.

I think I would recommend this tobacco to beginners in English blends because it’s easy to smoke. And I would also recommend it to those who no longer smoke cigarettes, although they might need a bigger nic kick.

I hope I haven’t offended anyone, I am aware that I’m talking about a very special blend for extremely many smokers. But for me, it just didn’t work out.

A beautiful blend, that should not be restricted to early mornings.

I've really been enjoying Dunhill's "Early Morning Pipe" in the evenings, and I find it to be perfect. The Virginias are fine, the Orientals make it tasty, and it is perfect with the late sports report on TV. The name belies its suitability for any time of the day. I'd suggest this for those who are experienced, and who like English blends.

Wow, what more can be said for a pipe blend that has been reviewed 524 times? I smoked a few tins of this years ago and liked it. My problem and I am not sure if it is indeed a problem is that I am always buying some other blend that has a fancy label, exotic description written by the best dime store novelist out there, its future existence or should I say its future demise which seems to be happening a lot lately is on the chopping block, etc. Back in December I ordered in bulk some of the Big 3, EMP, 965, and Nightcap. The Early Morning Pipe smells to me like a light 'My Mixture 965' with a mild woodsy and spicy taste and is a great way to start the morning.

Packs and lights easily. A mild aptly named smoke. Rich grassy and a little spicy. A light tobacco taste and room note. I think the most accurate description i read called it a top shelf OTC. Not the most complex tobacco, but good light flavorful smoke. Would add to my rotation, but with Dunhill disappearing I would prefer to stock up on their other blends, which will be harder to replace.

I've enjoyed this blend on occasional mornings with a light roast coffee or English breakfast, I do recommend the pairing, and perhaps some classical music. The stoved red Virginias are sweet and earthy and provide a nice platform to the blend,The lemon Virginia lightens the smoke and highlights grassy notes. Orientals are tangy and lightly spicy while the Cyprian Latakia is woodsy and exudes a gentle smokiness. Burns clean but leaves a little moisture, needs average relights. Mild and easygoing. Yes, an appropriately named blend. Dunhill will be difficult to get in the near future if you live in the states, so if you like it stock up!

A wonderful, wonderful blend! I'm rather an "Latakia-Skeptic" - means, that I only like blends that contain moerate doses of Latakia and have a unobtrusive Latakia aroma to them, Lat-Bombs aren't for me. Early Morning Pipe definetly is one of those english blends I admire.

Opening the lovely, classy tin, a delicious, smoky and roasted aroma comes up. Its aroma reminds me of standing at the beach, eperiencing all the lovely smells... The scent of the salty sea-water, a decent, woodsy smokiness, like that of people having a BBQ around the campfire at the beach. There's also a roasted, almost "roasted-bread" aroma, reminding me of bread being roasted above the campfire, and a ethereal, herbal aroma of herbs to season the BBQ is also present. Some sweetness is floating through there too, from a guy selling cotton candy to the kids at the café.

And Early Morning Pipe truly is a blend for smoking at morning to me! Spicy, yet sweet. Nice aromas, yet not too much for the morning palate. The Virginias give off a nice, very mild sweetness, and in interplay with the Oriental leafs it creates a unique aroma of ethereal herbs, wood and earth, roasted bread and some nuttiness. The Latakia underscores the experience by contributing a woodsy, sweet smokiness, that's smooth as silk on the palate. There's just enough Latakia to make its presence known, yet it is noticeable in every puff. Those three components create synergetic interplay of oriental, herbal, smoky roasted and sweet aromas, that'll leave you wanting more after the bowl is finished. I love it! I feel like this blend has got some sort of mild casing to add some sweetness, and I also get some coffee-ish notes by times - but it'S only hints of it and if there's any flavours added it's well done and well interlaced into the tobacco composition.

Really deserves 4-stars and being a classic blend that seems to be around since the beginning of the century. Well done, Dunhill! You got me with this blend...still I find the prices rather high, but yu make some great english blends - if not the best!

Update: My old tins arrived, 2 EMPs, one even still vacuum sealed. I guess it's Murray's 80's, as it has the old font (all lowercase-letters) and above it the "to the majesty...." writing and logo and is marked with "United Kingdom". Label printed on the tin and weight only in grams. It's a whole different tobacco!! The tin-note is sweeter, and less spicy. In the pipe the tobacco is very creamy, almost a whipped-cream note to it with a vanilla-ish undertone, which I'm most certain comes from a tonca-bean/cumarin additinon! Flavouring for this blen "very mild".

It's also a tad sweeter than the current Orlik incarnation, but also has a pleasant spice to it. I love it.... I find the my tin of Murrays EMP to be superior to the current incarnation! Both are very good... but the old tin is divine, really! When nowadas EMP is 4-star, the old tin iI have is 5-star! ;-D

One of the oldest blends around. It's a very simple balkan/english mixture: virginias and orientals more or less evenly mixed. The cut is a very nice ribbon that packs easy and burns well. Out of the tin may be a bit too wet, can be smoked but will probably burn, it's better to leave it dry for some minutes before smoking.

The tin aroma is somewhat strong, the orientals and latakia taking the lead. When smoking it has a decent body, the smoke is creamy and the taste is nice and smooth. The oriental leaf is the more noticeable, but the blend is very balanced. The taste is more or less the same from beginning to end, and makes for a very relaxing smoke, with a mild nicotine hit. The room note may be too strong for non smokers, as it happens with all balkan/english mixtures.

It doesn't have the complexity of other blends that go for a more stronger presence of orientals, add kentucky for some more variety or go for some extra spice with perique. Early Morning Pipe it's a simpler blend and, in result, it's a very balanced tobacco. Some smokers will find it too plain, uninteresting or boring, while some others may find it to be their favourite blend, an all day smoke. At the very least it deserves a try, if just for the legacy and history of the brand.

Early Morning Pipe has been blended since 1951* and got a lot of history behind it. For decades, many good guys in different corners of the earth used to meet sunrises clenching a pipeful of EMP and being completely fond of it. I like the tin art, that Cock & Sun emblem. I also like this blend's unique name. Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe has a notable place in pipe-smoking culture and deserves respect. That's however the only things I like about this blend.

Other than that, I really struggle to comprehend how a light soft blend of sourish Orientals could be recommended as the blend of choice for the first pipe of the day. In my world, early morning is rather the time when I most crave a nicotine fix and when I need some strong black potions like Black Kenyan Tea or Black Coffee to finally wake me up and to cheer me up for the coming day. Same goes about tobaccos: the first tobacco of the day better be dark and strong, like GH Dark Bird's Eye, SG Black XX, Irish Flake etc. Nothing is farther from that purpose than EMP. It's rather soothing than cheering. I honestly tried it early in the morning. By the end of the bowl I was wanting to go back to sleep.

But well, I'm severely nicotine addicted and I'm not used to be awake on EARLY mornings. I'm a night-owl kind of guy. The mileage of non-addicted early-birds may definitely vary. Then I guess the likeness of the Cock decorates the tin not by chance but as a direct and honest warning: For Early Non-Addicted Birds Only!

I find this tobacco very similar to James Fox’s Campanile, so I am going to review it in comparison with it. For starters they have the same narrow ribbon – almost shag – cut. EMP has a more bright overall hue though. Both contain minimal bits of black (Latakia) tobacco. Both have a woody tin aroma, but whereas EMP has a more defined but less pronounced cedary scent, Campanile has a more fragrant fruity tone which I find more appealing.

They are both Oriental forward but whereas Campanile is more feminine/floral/sweet and sour and tangy, EMP is duller (i.e. less bright) in that while possessing the Oriental tang it is less sweet and more woody/cedary/nutty and can fail occasionally to register flavour. Latakia while present is almost imperceptible in both. EMP seems to be a tad stronger and a little more sharp/peppery than Campanile but still it is a mild mixture.

Flavour-wise though, I think Campanille is more expressive. EMP also burns slower than Campanille which is a significant plus.

It’s as though EMP contains duller Orientals (Izmir?) while Campanille brighter (Basma?). I think I prefer Campanile. Both mixtures can be smoked all day. Also EMP gets better with a few months in a jar. I don't know how it used to be but as it now, I believe it does not merit four stars.

One of my top 5 tobaccos. What can be said that has not already been said here. Excellent combination of Sweet Va and orientals. One of the most consistent smokes out there. Mild English at its finest! I smoke this at least once a day usually in the morning. I have several tins as well as many Mason Jars in the cellar. If I get cut off from the world in the Zombie Apocalypse I want to make sure I got some EMP laid in for the duration! A must try smoke.

I wanted a light English for a winter smoke, winter not being as good a season for light aromatics. I'll be honest. I've tried varying strengths of English and Balkan tobaccos and found myself not liking them too much. I ordered some of this in bulk. Here are my first impressions.

Mild but very English. Not latakia heavy, but it's there and the smoke is kind of woodsy. Underneath is a spicy tobacco which drifts across my palate with an exotic flavor. I assume these are the Orientals. I can't taste the Virginia. There is a bit more nicotine than I like but not enough to make me dizzy. The tobaccos are very good quality and well blended. The taste is consistent and pleasant. It sits very nicely on the tongue, even as the smoke progresses. I think the name is right on - this is a very good first smoke of the day.

Tried this tobacco last night. The tin note is mildly smoky as would be expected with a blend containing Latakia. The tobacco is a loose ribbon cut and the moisture level was just about right. It packed well and after the charring light and a little tamping it burned extremely well. No need for re-lights as it burned nice and cool with no gurgle. I liked the fact that I could achieve high levels of smoke with just a few good draws. Then when I throttled back the tobacco responded and I was able to enjoy a nice therapeutic smoke. I am not a daily smoker and savor the times I am able to get away and enjoy a good tobacco. I have found that although I do enjoy a quality aromatic at times I have definitely gone over to "purer" tobacco blends. Quality virginias, vapers, and now english blends have become my smoke of choice. When reaching for a quality english blend early morning pipe certainly fills the bill. The smoke is well balanced with no surprises. I enjoyed the full bowl, it smoked cool top to bottom with absolutely no bite. The N level is very moderate but nonetheless does contribute to the experience. Other reviewers have mentioned that EMP is not as complex as some other Latakia blends. I find that is one of her endearing qualities. It is a tobacco that gives you what you expect when you light it up. No more... No less... After all isn't that what you are looking for?

This is one of my all-time favorite english blends. For my palate, this delivers the perfect combination of latakia with virginia and oriental tobaccos. I start every morning with EMP and have it in continual rotation. What I like best about it is the mild-to-medium nicotine hit -- not too weak but not strong as some of the other Dunhill blends.

The tobacco is perfect right out of the tin (I have not tried bulk yet but will have to soon considering how much of this I smoke). No drying time is needed. Packs very well into the pipe with little effort.

Dunhill Early Morning Pipe is a great tobacco that just can't be overlooked. The creamy latakia and the stoved virginias are always enjoyed by the pipe smoker who cares for classic tobaccos and can be smoked all day long without any heaviness. It was my first english mixture eight years ago and I am always pleased to smoke it from time to time. The combustion is easy and the taste never tiresome.

My first smoke was a little harsh, perhaps due to my 'haste' to get it to deliver its worth. Subsequent smokes have proved far more exciting and interesting, without any tongue bite or harshness. On the balance, this is a well rounded blend though not as mild as many reviewers have stated. It tends to light well and and stay so for most of the smoke. A little sweetness does exist but the Latakia and the Oriental 'spicyness' are evident all through and tend to dominate. Good for a morning smoke but just as good for an all day smoke.

Early Morning Pipe was one first English mixtures I tried. I didn't know how to feel about it at first, but as I kept smoking it I discovered a great tobacco, which now has become a faithful companion.

Thin ribbons, yellows, medium reddish browns and dark browns and does not present a pronounced contrast. The tin aroma is very pleasant, slightly smoky and earthy with some sweetness to it The taste is very balanced, slightly sweet, a rounded Oriental quality. I picked up some nice tobacco flavor with a very slight hint of some smokiness.

EMP goes really well with coffee. The bowl starts very good and becomes even better as you go. A good balance between Virginia types, Latakia, and probably Perique. The Virginia component is not dominated by a heavy cured taste. Enjoyable to the end.

EMP is a very satisfying smoke, with enough character and complexity to keep you interested. Very highly recommended to anyone, specially for those who are willing to discover the realm of non-aromatics tobaccos.

Dunhill EMP was my very first trip into English style tobacco territory and I consider myself lucky for that. I keep ordering new tins sporadically and I have some unopened tins from different eras in my private stock that I open on special occasions. It used to be an absolute favorite of mine.

Today I think it still is a good and decent smoke with the VAs and Orientals leading the game and Latakia being the supportive element in the background. A no-brainer, easy handling, very consistent.

BUT: My personal perception must have changed quite a bit and I call it "the fragrant blend", because I still love the smell, the fragrance while I smoke; But when I focus on the taste alone, EMP seems kind of vapid to me now. I'll have mild green tea with it rather than coffee, if that explains it.

After almost 25 years of smoking aromatics, but having discovered Cuban cigars in the meantime, this was my very first English mixture, and it got me hooked. It opened a whole new world of pipe tobaccos for me. I still enjoy flavored tobaccos, but at the same time, depending on my mood, I savor Va/Pers as well as Oriental and English blends.

Opening the beautiful tin, your nostrils are greeted with the spicy, peaty scent of Latakia, which reminds me of an Islay Single Malt Whisky, with a subjacent floral sweetness from the Orientals and the Bright and Red Virginias. Filling and lighting your pipe is easy with this ribbon cut.

Despite the tangy Latakia, EMP is a smooth and rather mild, creamy smoke, which offers a subliminal sweetness. There'll be no tongue bite whatsoever, if you smoke it gently. It burns down evenly to a fine dark ash, rarely requiring a re-light when tamped down from time to time. It's a great all day smoke.

The room note is spicy, but inobtrusive.

A very pleasing english. As a relative newcomer to pipe smoking, the English blends I have tried are less easy to distinguish between than the various aromatics which tend to have more immediate and distinctive characteristics to the nose, particularly before lighting. At my current stage of experience, I am still limited to distinguishing english blends in simple terms of strong or not so strong, harsh/bitey or smooth and "contains weird twang or not" (eg the pepper afterkick from Squadron Leader that I just can not get used to). So, working within my limited terms of reference and experience, EMP is a smooth, medium strength English with no weird twangs of any description and I fully recommend it!

First let me say, I don't smoke a pipe everyday, but I do smoke the pipe at least 2 - 3 times a week. Now that being said... I do like this blend! The first bowl I smoked was early in the morning before breakfast and It set the mood for the entire day. I sat there on the back patio watching the sun come up and the birds flying around looking for food. This blend does have a little nic kick but not enough to make you sick or dizzy. I'm not looking for the nic, I'm looking for a good tobacco to be that medium blend where you can sit there and enjoy a bowl for an hour and relax. Now, for the room note, not so good for the reciever. My wife thought I was smoking a cigarette or something along that line. For myself, it tasted good and the smell was fine. I did have to take a shower to remove the smell so the wife would come near me... Wait...(lightbulb went on) next time I want some alone time from the family, this will be my blend! Lol!

What can I say ? I just love this tobacco. It's one of my favorite tobaccos. When you light the bowl it's fresh. Then comes a light strong but also sweet latakia taste. It's probably not the best english blend type, but for the moment I can say it's the best I've tasted. Maybe in the future I will say the opposite but now it's sure to me. As my rating suggest, I highly recommend this tobacco...

This is probably the best tobacco I have ever smoked, based on quality of leaf. The flavor is mellow but progresses just a little throughout the bowl, yet not quite an aro. For someone who is looking to crossover from aro's and try non-aro's, then this is where I would point you. Not quite an English blend since the Latakia is very very mild, if not unrecognizable. This is an extremely enjoyable smoke for anytime of the day despite its name, however I found it to be the most relaxing in the evenings.

This is obviously, beeing a dunhill blend, a fine tobbaco. It is assantially "Nightcap" light, dunhill is making up for the lightness by adding some spiciness to the overall flavour. Out of the tin best smoked indoors with a 9mm filter pipe light to medium packed and dont be greedy. Dont pack strong just get a bigger pipe, it can get kind of hot this way but still enjoyable. Best thing with this tobbaco is that it good for any ocasion before or after dinner with or without coffie or ilght alcohol ,sitting ,standing, you get the point. This one wont have a strong after taste or leave you with a sticky feeling in your mouth. Maybe this tobbaco will be good in a small unfilterd pipe dried up and medium or ever strong packed.

A straight forward mild flavored English-Oriental blend with a bit too much nicotine for my taste. On charring light Early Morning Pipe is semi-sweet in flavor and the Latakia is immediately noticeable. The first portion of the bowl is quite nice and I get a slight coffee note on exhale along with a twinge of an ammonia-like flavor. A pleasant spiciness does build a bit but it’s never overwhelming.

EMP performs well and stays lit nicely. It does seem to burn pretty fast but it still remains relatively cool in the bowl and on the tongue.

By Mid-bowl the flavors and strength build some and I start to notice a few more of the fragrant qualities found in quality oriental tobacco; there's a musky scent that's simply delightful. It seems to always be at this point where I hit my stride and experience something that is much more to my liking. However, this is also where the nicotine creeps in. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a show stopper, it's just not what I look for in a light English blend. As far as overall strength goes, EMP's tobacco flavor strength is Mild to Medium, but by end bowl I'd rate the nicotine build-up as Medium to Strong.

If you fancy milder flavored English blends but prefer more nicotine strength, EMP would be a nice choice. However, I can think of about a half a dozen other blends in the same category that I would rather smoke. GLP's Meridian comes to mind as does Sam Gawith’s Skiff Mixture, Rattray's Red Rapparee and also Presbyterian Mixture. These share the Oriental-forward flavor characteristics without turning up the dial on the nicotine drip.

Relatively mild, for this style of tobacco. Very light on Latakia (some suggest there is none at all). Smooth. Flavorful. Yet a bit more Virginia-forward than I prefer in an Oriental blend. There's a tangy, BBQ tin note that translates to the smoking flavor. I prefer a drier, Oriental-forward blend and while Early Morning Pipe is a fine tobacco, one could certainly reach for a richer, spicier, and less tangy blend in this niche.

Occupies an interesting space between a traditional English and a traditional Balkan. For that, three stars.

Well now, I know I've trashed some of the current Dunhill re- issues by Orlik (e.g., MM 965, Nightcap etc) and have complained of their use of inferior Latakias - as compared to GLP and C & D Latakia choices - after giving some thought to the matter, I have to say Early Morning Pipe (EMP) has really grown on me in a good way. Now on my third 50g tin since January, I have to say, yes, it is a fine English blend. The tin says "Sweet Oriental carefully blended with Bright and Red Virginias, pressed and lightly stoved. Great as the `first pipe` arousing the palate for the further pleasures of the day". I have to agree.

There is an excellent set of Virginia choices in this blend producing a very heavy sweet dense smoke. Like all the re-issues, water content is fine out of the tin, gravitation loads like a dream and keeps lit without fuss. Produces a fine ash all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

As I sit here chugging along, the Virginia sugar base really rings through, with a mild spiciness added due to the choice of Orientals. Although most of these Dunhill re-issues are fairly loaded with nicotine (thinking here of Royal Yacht), EMP seems on the lighter side.

Dunhill EMP is really a fine smoke and I highly recommend this as an all day smoke - not just a day opener. Give it a shot and I'm sure you'll agree.

I smoked this and Standard Mild for years. It was usually EMP because it was available in bulk. I did miss this, plus London Mixture, Durbar, Standard Mild and Aperitif when Dunhill blends were discontinued. I do like to stick to one tobacco most of the time. These milder, more subtle Dunhill blends, for me, can be savored better than if I'm switching smokes often. EMP can taste like nothing if you've just smoked something really different, but if I'm sticking to just that blend, I detect all kinds of great, but subtle flavors. It's also a good mild all-day smoke. During Dunhill's absence, I tried everything under the sun and settled on Squadron Leader. This still might be my favorite. I first smoked Dunhill around 1962 and yes, it probably was better then, but my nose was young too. At any rate, I find the new EMP very good. It's ribbon cut is somewhat finer than before, but doesn't seem to effect the smoking quality. I'm waiting to see if it will be available in bulk. I've heard it will be, but know there were many rumors about Dunhill coming back that were inaccurate,at least the rumored dates. I'm glad it's back ! I've tried Standard Mild/Mellow and EMP so far. Next up will be a tin of London Mixture.

People have called this monochromatic, and I can't really disagree - though the interplay between the orientals and virginias, while subtle, seems to me to be perfectly harmonious. This is a tobacco that has always lived in the nose for me -- not sure if that makes any sense -- but the sidestream smoke is just delicious, sort of a naturally sweet, mild toasty natural Virginia goodness (always reminded me a bit of burnt marshamallows) coupled with an Oriental pungency that I never seem to tire of. There are just enough other hints of flavor from the other tobaccos to keep things interesting. I can be a bit bitey if smoked too quickly. I preferred the bulk Orlik to the Murray's in this one -- but have only sampled one tin of Murray's, so perhaps it wasn't a representative sample.

It may well be that absense makes the heart grow fonder. Hopefully rumors are true, and I'll have an opportunity to test this tobacco again later in the year.

Rich taste and nice balanced strength. For sure it fits perfectly for the first pipe of the day, especially in autumn and winter.

For many years I didn't omit to buy a few tins. And consumed all of them with great pleasure.

If you wish to smoke an elegant English mixture this would be a perfect choice.

This was the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked. I began my continuing journey through the world of pipes and tobacco with EMP in 1994. For whatever reason, I never returned to this blend until just recently.

This is a great blend for a new pipe smoker in my opinion as well as deserving of its status as a favorite by so many seasoned veterans. Because I enjoyed this so much as my first tobacco, I bypassed the usual early indoctrination through aromatics and postponed my enjoyment of that type of blend until much later in my hobby when I could appreciate them. I think one of the main reasons people are predjudiced against aromatics is that's what they burn their mouth on when they take up the pipe so they associate them with pain and/or categorize them for the beginner only.

In any case, a more natural English type blend like EMP lets a new pipe smoker know what tobacco tastes like, and does so in a gentle way. I wouldn't introduce someone who's never had an adult beverage to whiskey by serving them some rotgut cheap immitation, or even worse, something disasterous like Southern Comfort, nor would I introduce them to wine with a 4 pack of Bartles and James - they'd get a nice single malt or a Pinot Noir, with a little coaching on how to make the most of it. But I digress.

What Cragganmore is to single malts, EMP is to pipe tobacco. The stoved Virginias provide a slightly sweet and full base while the orientals provide just enough spice. The result is a smooth rich satisfying smoke without any rough edges that packs and burns nicely. If you light this up looking for a latakia bomb you'll be disappointed. I think of it more as a Virginia blend with a little oriental leaf to add fullness and complexity. The condimental leaf is just that. Don't let the name fool you into thinking this is some sort of sawed-off or diluted immitation of something else. It's a fine blend in its own right that meets all reasonable expectations. Highly Recommended - four stars.

I have often spoken up for a more restrained expression of English blends in the past. A via media, to use the Anglican term, is what I think best sought when dealing with bright Virginias and the always temperamental Latakia. Here is a mixture that has rather fallen short, though not by adulterating the smoking experience with a massive and pretentious quantity of Latakia.

Perhaps I am never again to be fully satisfied with an English blend, but even the more restrained approach taken with Early Morning Pipe, for me, fails to deliver. Upon lighting up one is titillated with the musky tang found in so many other fine Dunhill English blends. This is not to be the lasting or predominate flavor, however. The smoke very soon gives way to a mundane note of bland, hollow blonde Virginia that tastes like poplar wood smells like when it is burning. Perhaps one or two more times that true English flavor will reassert itself, but again it is not to last.

For my part, I will always reach for a far stouter and heavier tobacco to have with my tea in the morning, and do not generally understand the sentiment that lead to the formulation of Early Morning Pipe. It would seem that the experience I have had smoking this is similar to what others have described when experiencing what they perceive as the uninspired blandness of Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture. Elizabethan happens to be among my favorites and I will be sure to take it over Early Morning Pipe any day.

I've smoked this right out of the tin and aged a few years too.Its's always a pleasure.At least a few days a week I fill up a smaller size (group 3)and puff away the morning at work with this classic blend.I work in a retail environment,and no one who comes in has ever said anything but positive things about it.It's the perfect after breakfast blend and is highly reccomended..... Preppypipe =====UPDATE===== The last couple of tins were quite flat and burned hot..Try G.L.Pease's Piccadilly.It has become my first bowl of the day and is a worthy replacement.

I forgot how much I enjoyed this blend until a friend gave me a can recently. This was a blend that I enjoyed in the early 80's and somehow I lost track of it. Being a fancier of oriental in particular, and red virginia in general, this really is a smooth, flavorful smoke. I enjoy this with a big mug of black kenyan coffee in a backyard recliner. It packs easily and burns consistently down the bowl to a grey/white ash. I seldom need more than one relight, so long as I tamp along the way. The flavor becomes fuller to me the farther down the bowl I go, ending with this smoker in a state of satisfied bliss.

The normal morning here begins early. A cup of coffee with the wife, toast or a light breakfast, wake up and begin the day. The second cup of coffee generally is accompanied with the first pipe of the day,and a scan of the local newspaper.I have been smoking a pipe now for some time and a creature of habit the first bowl is usually 3 Nunns,Escudo or Early Pipe. By this time the wife begins her daily routine, though, doesn't seem to mind the aroma of my morning selection. "It's better then some of the stuff you smoke" is her comment regarding the room note. Definitely a Dunhill Blend, (My Mixture 965 and Night Cap are two of my all time favorites)it packs and lights nicely. Average number of relights. They don't list Latakia in the Tin Description but it displays a Latakia presence,especially after the halfway point. A smooth,some what mild taste with little or no moisture build-up. A slight nutty and smokey taste increases near the end of the bowl. More often then not, if I start the day with it, it's a Dunhill day, a bowl or two of My Mixture 965 and ending with the last smoke of the evening, a bowl of Night Cap. Overall, a very nice tabacco, if you like English blends, you'll enjoy this one. If you're thinking of trying an English blend this would be a good one to start with, though some may think it strong.

Dunhill Early Morning Pipe: Tin note of mildly smoky, sweet fruit, and spices. Tobacco is black, dark brown and tan ribbon cut. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and consistent, with notes of floral, spices, earth, wood, leather, spicy, peaty sour vegetation, toast, tangy stewed fruit, lemon zest, bready, dry hay, acidic, herbal bitter, mildly savory, a citrus soda background note, and a peppery retro. Oriental/Turkish are leading with Virginias supporting. Latakia is supporting from afar. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is good.

I bought a tin based on reviews. I learned the hard way that good reviews are not a warranty for a good experience.

Tin note: smoky woody campfire - smells good

Packs and burns nicely, no relights neccesary. You get woody, peppery taste with underlying harsh and sour note. This is tolerable in the 1/3, but after that is just getting more sour and more harsh. Bad sour aftertaste.

Wife not approves, says it smells like cigarettes.

I don't recommend this to anyone. I don't know what to do with a tin of this.

This is about the strongest I like my pipe tobacco. I feel anything stronger than this tastes/smells too much like a cigar. This can really be smoked all day, but is best in the morning w/ black coffee, or to end the day. It's a straight up English, but light enough for everyone to really enjoy. No perique also...which is good because that's the only tobacco I don't enjoy.

one of the better Peterson blends. to me it is well balanced in flavor. as with any tobacco with latakia you get that leather smell and taste, as mentioned before a great one to introduce you to English blends. I always keep my tins at least a year before opening. Peterson is a good value in a name brand decent quality tobacco. worth trying.

A wonderful light english mixture that can get the job done anytime of day, not just the early morning. It can also be a good introduction to englishes for somebody new.

When you open the tin, you’re greeted by a savory sweet smell. The latakia is definitely there, but the virginias and spicy orientals are much more noticeable than in a standard english blend. Very nice and savory.

Upon lighting, you’re met with the bready, earthy, and slightly fruity virginias and spicy, floral, and incense-y orientals. The first time I tried this I thought there might be perique due to the spiciness, but it’s just a spicy variety of oriental that gives that tingle. The sweet and smoky latakia is in the background on this. Just a nice, smooth layer underneath the virginias and orientals to give it some depth. In the finish you get some more of the virginias and the incense from the orientals. The spiciness continues pretty consistently down the bowl. This blend also gives a creamier mouthfeel than heavier blends like Nightcap, for example, which tends to leave my mouth feeling quite dry.

Overall, this is a really solid blend with high quality tobacco. While I usually prefer a bit heavier englishes, I could easily see this becoming an all day smoke for somebody, as it isn’t super rich, yet it’s still satisfying. It’s also good if you’re in the mood for an english blend in warmer weather, when a heavy blend could be too much. And, like mentioned above, it would be great for people discovering englishes for the first time. I’d definitely recommend this blend, and I give it 3.5 stars.

EDIT 12/05/22: I’m raising this to 4 stars. After smoking it everyday for a few weeks, it grew heavily on me. Just a really hearty and comforting blend. I get why it’s called Early Morning Pipe. Not complex, and if you’re looking for a lot of Latakia, look elsewhere, but sometimes it just feels like a warm blanket.

Creamy, nutty, smokey, and mild. This is the most difficult review Ive had to date. Been smoking this stuff for a few years now, off and on, and still can't really figure it out. Closest I can get is it's like a mild nightcap, sans perique. Very, very creamy. Lightly nutty. Somewhat smokey latakia prescence. A bit of oriental spice. Grass and earth from virginias. Smokes cool and dry. No bite. It's a simple, easy smoker. Not boring, not exciting. Very center of the road. Meh, I could take it or leave it. It is a nice first smoke of the day, go figure. Only real complaint is the relights, this stuff goes out on me alot regardless of moisture, packing, pipe shape yada-yada. I've had to bury many a lighter simply for the sake of progress. 2.5-3 stars. Can't guarantee you'll like it, but I can guarantee you won't hate it.

My little review is not needed but I am giving review for new pipe smokers. I am a new smoker of only 3 months and I cannot break down the nuances like more seasoned pipers.

What I will say is TRY IT!! I was afraid of Latakia thinking the smell was strong and it would surely make me dizzy or sick. This is farthest from reality. This is now my favorite blend and is what I was seeking as I sampled codgers and aromatics. Latakia in small doses is like comparing a great steak to a tuna sandwich, both are good but one has rich depth that scratches that itch. Although EMP is a codger (100 years old) is packs flavor.

If you are a new pipe smoker you need to at least try MATCH Early Morning (New Name - Match Sunrise)” because it’s only $2.50 an ounce. Don’t be afraid of Latakia. It’s the steak of tobacco.

What else is there to say about EMP?

The tin note is mainly Latakia and some sweet and sour orientals. Comes moist even with a year or two in the tin. Let sit in the morning sun for a few minutes and she’ll be up and at’em.

This is a nice light Latakia / English blend. It’s not dark, or of strong bold flavor but has enough flavor to make this highly enjoyable. The Latakia is 50/50 balanced with the orientals in my opinion. There’s that familiar herbal Latakia smoke but also that floral sweet and sour of the orientals. The Virginias add a touch of sweetness and body but mostly in the background. Has a mild, pleasant taste with nothing to overwhelm the palate. A relaxing all day English blend. Had a creamy aspect to it. The retrohale is nice and you’ll notice the orientals. Leaves a very slight but nice aftertaste. Does not bite. Nic hit is very mild. Slight mouth tingle, a little pepper. Great with morning coffee.

Now… comparing this to another light English blend of similar stock, SG Squadron Leader: I’ll say that if you like one you’ll like the other although SL has a smokey barbecue characteristic to it where as EMP does not. EMP befits it’s name well.

If you’re new to English blends or non aromatics this is a great place to start! It is by design a mild easy going all day English smoke.

It's like diet Nightcap, which is a good thing. It's a nice full flavored Latakia blend that won't overwhelm the palate. Goes great with morning coffee as the name suggests. It's a little more than I'd like in the summer time, but I'll be reaching for this often in the colder months.

I like turkish tobaccos, I like virginia tobaccos, I like latakia tobaccos, and I really enjoy mild english mixtures.

That said, I do not care for Early Morning Pipe.

I've been trying to like it for almost 20 years and it just doesn't do it for me. Regardless of pipe size or change in puffing pace it just always ends up tasting "soapy" and unbalanced to me. My best guess is that the percentages of VA/Turkish/Latakia in EMP just does not agree with my body chemistry.

With pipes, and with anything, if you enjoy it...then it's good...if you don't enjoy it... then it's not.

This is going back to the cellar for another long, long nap.

Please bring back Dunhill "The Aperitif"!!!!

From the tin, Early Morning Pipe comes at a great moisture level and is ready to smoke. It’s very finely ribbon cut, and light in color compared to most English blends. The tin note is smoky, sweet, tangy, earthy, and a little woody.

Upon lighting, I am greeted by the orientals. They are tangy, spicy, earthy, and a little fragrant. This is followed by the sweetness of the Virginias. They sport a touch of grass and some light fruity notes. The Latakia is a background player but provides a nice smokiness, as well as a musty woodsy note. The magic of this blend is the interplay between the sweetness from the VAs and and the tanginess of the Orientals. The great YouTuber, Muttnchop Piper, compared EMP to orange juice. I liked his analogy so much I must quote him. He said that EMP is like orange juice in that it is sweet and tangy, but with a little bit more sweetness than tanginess so it keeps you coming back. I think he hit the nail. The sweet and tangy notes make it a great morning flavor profile, not just the name!

EMP packed easy, smoked very cool, and did not get aggressive. It required minimal relights and did not leave any moisture behind. The Nic hit is mild, but just enough to get you going in the morning and wake up the taste buds. I would recommend it as a first pipe in the morning, along with a cup of coffee. Could be smoked throughout the day as well if one desired. 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Sadly I never got to try the Dunhill version (altho I am still looking to buy some that some foresighted soul may have salted away), but as a fan of English blends such as Old Dublin I found this to be an enjoyable smoke, that, despite the name, is good at any time of the day. A great blend to go with the first pot of tea in the morning to wake you up.

I'm reviewing the Bulk Version from Dunhill

I bought some bulk EMP and Nightcap back in 2017 when I started pipe smoking again. At the time, I found both of them a little too "intense" so I jarred them up and basically forgot about them.

For New Years 2021, I decided to try them again starting with EMP. With my appreciation now for Latakia I find it to be an enjoyable smoke. The orientals give it some spice/sweetness and the latakia adds that "campfire" background. It's not overpowering and makes for a good morning smoke with coffee.

The ribbon cut packs easily and lights easily in any of my pipes. It really shines in taller bowls it seems to me.

A delicious tobacco. The fact that he is so well known and legendary makes his recommendation seem less interesting, but if someone is starting to smoke a pipe, maybe they should not miss it. By having a small dose of latakia, the new pipe smoker will not be overwhelmed by this ingredient that here works as a dressing, which although it is always present, never becomes the only protagonist as in other latakiate mixtures. This is due to the good proportion of orientals that the mixture has and that give it that floral and woody touch, making one doubt whether it is, strictly speaking, an English or a Balkan mixture. However, neither the high presence of Orientals nor the Virginias prevent the smoke from tending to be quite dry.

In my opinion, Early Morning Pipe is a rich, tasty, very well balanced mixture and even at the risk of being corny I will say that it seems very fine and elegant.

The comparison of these Peterson work with the old Dunhill ones is difficult, since these are younger than those of the prestigious British brand and it will be necessary to see how aging feels to be able to establish such comparisons. We will discuss it in three or four years, in the meantime I plan to stock up on more tin to repeat ...

Inspired by my latest stash from The Danish Pipe shop, I decided to smoke Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap for a couple of weeks as the first and last bowl of the day, respectively.

So, Early Morning first. Tin note immediately tells that this is an english blend, although probably on the milder side. And this is how it smokes too; mellow and well-rounded, but with enough tang to keep it interesting. The most identifying characteristic of EMP to me is the very strong undercurrent of an earthy, almost clay-like flavour, coming from the Turkish I'd guess. This is dominating enough not to be entirely pleasant, to be honest, and takes one star off of an otherwise very good tobacco.

This is a tobacco with legendary status. I wanted to love this. I fully expected this to be the tobacco which would become my main favourite blend.

However, the Perique in here isn’t like a normal Perique. Something unusual about the way the tobaccos combine. I didn’t get on with it, so I jarred it and came back to it several months later. It was then 5 times better. However, it’s just not quite right. Something strange about it. It smelled amazing in the tin. But the flavour was just odd.

What I wanted this to be, can actually be found in My Mixture 965 which is a better English blend, much much better, and is also not at all strong. MM 965 is actually a blend for the early morning.

Nicotine - weak. Flavour - medium but also strange, and the strangeness dominates. Strength - weak. The tobacco is also fussy and the flavour changes hugely as it ages.

Overall 2 stars. People reading these reviews who have not tried this EMP before - I would recommend avoiding it and trying My Mixture 965 by Peterson, which is probably what you are actually looking for.

This blend is delightful. It is a nice English blend that has come complexity but it is light in nature. It really is nice in the morning with some black coffee. Latakia drives the bus so speak but this is followed by the oriental flavours. Some English blends are very bold and can be a little overwhelming but this is not one of them. You can happily smoke this all day and you will have a consistent bowl no matter what happens. It again is bold enough to cope whatever you throw at it including adverse weather. I have noticed though that this can bite if you are not mindful. I think the blend is Virginia heavy rather than latakia and oriental like some other blends and this can catch you out. However this is rare. An enjoyable smoke and a good place to start in the world of English blends. It is where I started.

So many reviews here, so I will just add some of my personal hints: this is a well known classic and this blend well deserves this title.

For me this has become my go-to blend when I am in the mood for some virginia with a hint of "Englishness".

A lot of folks recommend this as an entry level blend for English pipe tobacco. Personally I would rather recommend a bolder blend, SG Squadron Leader comes to my mind, as this seems to me a more appropriate representation of this kind of tobacco. However, for people who want to be extra careful this blend may still be a good choice. The orientals and the latakia will definitely not overwhelm you here.

I've been smoking this in the mornings... as the label indicates one should. It's a pleasant, easy smoke. About a third of the way down the bowl, I caught a very pleasing taste of bacon, almost a faint hickory... Maybe a muted canadian bacon but not quite a full blown pan fried rasher. Early morning indeed. This tobacco is growing on me.

This is a pretty good smoke. The virginias are smooth and sweet. A bit harsh and sharp at first, but a few days in the tin works wonders. I can't really pick out the orientals. The latakia is perfect at first. Funky, sweet, and smokey, but diminishes significantly after the first few puffs. After that it settles into a smokey burnt hamburger flavor that I don't particularly enjoy in my tobacco. Yea this is recommended as a solid, repeatable way to get your nicotine fix without a bite. But I would not bother with ordering this online. Much more interesting tobaccos out there.

This is a great tobacco that matches perfectly its name. If you know how an early cool, bright and calm summer early morning feels, you know how this tobacco tastes. I start my day sitting on the back yard with a full pipe of this blend.

I cannot dissect its taste to the tobacco components of the blend just because I am not that good yet at identifying them in a mixture. But it tastes great with a mix of sweet and sourish tones that form something close to those favourite slightly citrusy refreshing candies from my childhood. The taste is very similar to the Dunhill's Night Cap, but if you let smoke hit the back of the palate, you will get a very distinct tangy and citrusy flavour that is missing in the Night Cap blend. And to me, exactly this tangy taste matches so perfectly the character and feeling of the fresh early morning. It really tastes as if you "smoke" that morning.

The blend is pretty mild in all respects, and this, I guess is what it is supposed to be for the first pipe after you wake up. Room note is tolerable. English blends are strange in this respect. They taste great, but smell not so good.

Aftertaste is very pleasant and pretty persistent. It survives my morning coffee and breakfast and fades away completely only closer to lunch. I really do not mind it. There is a bonus for the ones mixing pipe smoking with cigarettes during the day. When I take a cigarette in the middle of the day, when the aftertaste already disappeared, it all of a sudden comes back and lasts for another half an hour or so. Pleasant surprise.

Burns clean to dry grey ash and leaves almost no moisture in the bowl. Does not bite.

I really hope that STG after acquiring this blend from Dunhill will not screw it up. It would be a shame to lose it.

Samuel Gawith's Skiff Mixture comes close to EMP in many respects, but it lacks that fresh tangy flavour of an early morning.

This is one of the best english blends in the market. It is suitable to both the novice and the expert pipe smoker. One of the easiest to stay lit blends i have tried. The taste is straightforward, woody and earthy. It has the dinstict aroma of latakia, perfect for long winter nights by the fireplace. I strongly suggest it as an introduction to latakia containing blends.

This is a pleasant tobacco of good quality. As stated by other reviewers, it is extremely straightforward. It won’t blow you away with an N-bomb but it is not weak in the Vitamin N dept. , it won’t have you reaching for the Talisker to compliment its smokiness and it won’t have you oohing a aahing at the rich, fermented, Virginia figgy sweetness. It is almost like your ideal hand-rolled cigarette. It lights easily and smokes cleanly. No bite. No goop. No hassle. If you let your pipe go out and relight it half an hour later, it doesn’t overwhelm your palate. It is like a Habitat bookcase. Unshowy, high quality. The kind of thing you look at one day and realise you’ve had for 15 yers and it still looks great and you have never once even thought about it. There is one thing I would change about this blend and only one: I really want to grab 10 tins and cellar them for 15 years. What this blend needs is aging. As a Turkish-forward, ribbon-cut blend, it is lacking in richness. I believe this blend will absolutely shine after ten years in the cellar. But right now, it is “a smoke.” The bacon roll of tobaccos. Easy, tasty and just “there.” And that is not a bad thing at all

This was my first English blend. The only other tobaccos I had smoked prior to this were aromatics and Virginias, so when I looked up reviews of good starter English blends, EMP came up. I was surprised immediately of the strong aroma from the tin even before opening it. Upon lighting up, I immediately could taste a stark difference between this blend and any other tobacco I had ever smoked. There is absolutely no flavoring whatsoever; there is only a natural tobacco taste. The Latakia was quite noticeable to me, considering as I said before, I had never had an English. Overall, the taste is what I would describe as mildly earthy/woody, with hints of spice. It's truly a mild blend that does indeed go well with your morning coffee. Thanks to this blend, I can truly say I am a fan of Englishes, and will definitely be trying some similar blends in the near future. As far as room note, this may be a blend to stay away from smoking indoors. My partner says she hates the smell of it, though I see no problem with it.

I just received Dunhill Early Morning Pipe as a gift and just smoked the first bowl.

This is a really solid tobacco. It reminds me of a more down-to-Earth version of Dunhill's Nightcap. It smokes well, and began to "hit" me by surprise at around half the bowl, but its outro wasn't as extreme as I might have anticipated at that point. In fact it didn't really build from there and make me nauseous, because at a respectful pace the Early Morning Pipe is actually pretty casual. It really is something you can read a book with, listen to some music to, or just watch cars go by. It was a very low-stress smoke. The bowl stayed lit and, with matches outdoors (I don't like butane), required very little encouragement to get going and keep going.

The note wasn't great. This isn't an aromatic or as recognizable when combusted as many popular blends. It's more smokey and less incense-like, so if it's one of those smokes where you want that sort of ambiance, you probably wont get that from Early Morning Pipe. What you will get is a pretty rich experience that doesn't busy you too much, unless you want it to, in which case it seems complex and full in flavor. I feel like this is more of a "sit down" and enjoy type tobacco, and that you'd have to be pretty enthusiastic to smoke this casually or on-the-go, but it doesn't put you down after the smoke.

I can see why the guys at Dunhill saw this as a good Early Morning blend for that morning when you have some extra time and you want to set a relaxed beat and rhythm for your day. Clearly it's also a good tobacco for unwinding and putting your work aside.

Four stars.

Having tried a few of the Dunhill blends, I thought the Early Morning would make for another good experience.

I was wrong. It is a simple blend as most indicate, but rather than a simple pleasure, this one is simply not good. The Orientals are virtually AWOL, and the Virginia’s are grassy and spicy in a sharp, unpleasant way. Of the three bowls I tried, two degenerated halfway through to the point where the ash dominated the flavor (much like a poor aromatic). The other remained distastefully bland throughout.

At this point it is destined for the big bowl with the plastic liner in the kitchen.

The is a latakia forward blend in smell and flavor. Very subjectively, this tastes like exactly what I want. It's difficult to describe when it just strikes me as so very good.

Why: A great first-time to long-timer morning mix. You don't want to be busting your lungs. You want lite. You want something that doesn't do too many trade-offs in giving you an easier smoke. The mix is Virginia combined with Oriental/Turkish choices and Latakia.

Looks: It looks lite with ribbon cut gold and red Virginia and Oriental/Turkish. The darker Latakia is less prominent but don't let that confuse you. It leans in the Latakia direction when you try it.

Using?: Pack a full pipe. It's fast. You might even have yours lit on the false expansion first light. It goes to ash quickly. Not a slow burn by any means. You can finish it off with a cup of coffee. You can pretty much even enjoy this at even its hottest without tongue burn or wet tastes.

Result: The trade-off for lite is in the smell as the flavoring is absent, yet much like smoking a Latakia blend. There is a lite spice taste. For its ease of use, speed and mild, smooth pipe smoking, this is a must for nearly every pipe user, especially those new to Pipe, but that doesn't stop it being a long-term part of any collection. It can easily be used daily and vanish after a little while. Dunhill easily has cornered the Morning market with this one. They also have the evening one cornered with the very similar Nightcap blend. Both of these are some of Dunhill's top pipe tobaccos of choice.

This is an oriental forward english (which I belive might also be called a balkan blend). Sometimes in this kind of balkan blends the orientals can be a bit too tangy or sour, but this is not the case with EMP. The smoke is delightful in its mellowness, but there is a bitter undertone too. But it does not assert itself in any disturbing way until the last part of the bowl when it takes over. I am not sure about the "early morning"-quality, because when the bitterness takes over it tends to irritate the back of the throught and also upset the stomach a bit. But unlike some other reviews I don't think the nicotine is that strong (defintely not as strong as London Mixture). But yes, the end of the bowl is stronger and might give a little nicotine hit that perks you up a bit. Apart from the bitter end note I do think this is a very nice and mellow tobacco. The burning qualities are very good, producing a cool smoke and the complexity is there but perhaps a bit toned down compared to other english blends. But for that reason EMP offers a very nice choice if you want to enjoy a mellow balkan. If the end of the bowl did not turn bitter it would definetly deserve 4 stars, but I really don't like having to toss away the last quarter of the bowl in order not to end on a bitter note.

There is no better way to start a day than to light a bowl of this fine blend while enjoying a cup of tea and a game of chess to put the brain wheels in motion.

Just bear in mind this is a light tobacco, delicate and refreshing.

This is one of those tobaccos that I bought over ten years ago and just forgot about it. I've been tempted to crack it open on several occasions but never did, until now.

EMP is my third blend from Dunhill that I've ever tried. They are ridiculously hard to find where I live. Impossible, in fact. So my experience with Dunhill isn't as much as I would like it to be, because Elizabethan Mixture was simply superb. I didn't get along with My Mixture 965 too well, so I was really curious to EMP, quite the legendary blend as everyone is aware of.

I'm not sure what can be said about this that hasn't been said already, but I have really, really enjoyed it. For me, this has got to be the perfect Latakia based pipe tobacco. It's smooth, it's sweet, it's smoky - it's everything that I want it to be. And I absolutely love Dunhill's ribbon cut. It's so easy to work with and packs perfectly every single time, and burns down to the end with just a few tamps along the way.

It's not a terribly complex smoke, but I don't think that was ever the intention. I think this was just intended to be a mild, pleasant, well smoking tobacco, and that is exactly what it is. You just light it, forget about it, and enjoy it.

I love how the three different tobaccos play off of each other. You can taste each of the Turkish, Virginia and Latakia's in there. And they are blended absolutely perfectly. Great with a cup of strong, black tea.

Starts off floral, light lemon grass and citris with a nice smooth smokiness. A very smooth, mellow smoke. Flavors intensify a bit mid bowl. No harshness at all. A great early day smoke, definately lives up to it's label. A top shelf smoke especially considering it's available in bulk at bulk prices. Goes great with tea.

To me this is not an English, the stoved Virginia dominate the whole bowl but luckily we have some seasoning from the Orientals, and the Latakia, well I can't say I detect any significant portion, there is a hint there certainly! More like a Balkan to me! Apart from all that, I still very much enjoy this lovely Dunhill recipe! In a great balance and lives up to its name! A very nice first puff of the day which always enhances the spirit.

Early Morning is the gentle brother to Dunhill's 965 and to a lesser degree Nightcap. It retains all that charcoal goodness found in the other two, but in a milder form. The latakia is still very much alive in the tin and when lit, but the oriental and virginia is allowed to shine as well.

Don't get me wrong, I still am a huge fan of smoking Nightcap's fireplace ashes, but there are times when I don't want too much English in a blend, and this is where Early Morning shines.

It is a great choice when you want to enjoy an English in multiple bowls.

This one is quite hit-or-miss for me. I smoked it next to a cigar (Upmann) and i enjoyed it very much, it seemed spicy and lively. One time i smoked it next to Dunhill Apéritif, and it seemed absolutely tasteless... and even without any direct comparison, it sometimes wowed me, but generally didnt impress me... maybe because i usually smoke on the evening, and after a full, tasty meal, my palate is saturated and just doesnt care for EMPS delicate nuances...

For those who enjoy many pipes a day, i understand how this might be an interesting choice for an all day smoke, i can hardly see myself tiring from this taste, but for those like me who want to keep their smoking to a minimum, and who wish for every bowl to be an experience, well, i feel that EMP doesnt have much lasting appeal.. It is a delicate, lighter english blend, and thats it.

2017-06-21 Update: after about a year, i can definitely say that I do not really care for this tobacco. Its a fine blend, and following a few comparisons, i can now say that even though it is labeled as a ''light'' blend, this is still a rather full bodied tobacco, with lots, LOTS of leather, and also something meaty and bready about the core Va / Or taste, the latakia is there in support but not the star. It is not airy, or delicate, it is just muted. Overall, i find this blend rather bland, not tasteless, but bland.

Never got round to reviewing this, as I was not ready to decide between 3 and 4 stars. Now I've settled on 4. My go-to tobaccos are stronger blends - Nightcap, 965, Artisan's - but this has been in rotation with Squadron Leader as a "lighter" smoke. Lately, I'm favoring EMP over SQL. Why? It is a bit rounder and mellower. If I reach for a larger bowl pipe, I go for EMP more often than not.

This is an English blend with very little punch. It smokes easy and it agrees with almost any occasion. I tend to enjoy more strong tobaccos, but this is a pleasant smoke for those who prefer it softer and mild with little latakia and a nice leaf of orientals slowly spicing the virginias.

I have been smoking this blend for a month, and I have to say, it is growing on me. The more I smoke it the more I appreciate the subtleties of its flavors. It is specially enjoyable outdoors. I´m not passionate about this blend yet, but in my young experience smoking pipe tobacco, it has become the blend I´m turning to when i´m unsure of what to smoke.

I was looking at some of the "best" reviewed tobaccos with high marks. Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (EMP) was the one many people thought it was "a must" to try. I got my things together and after searching for nearly a whole Saturday, I managed to get it. I opened it up and was greeted with a pleasant smell that has been recited over and over here. Peat, some sourness, sweet vanilla, little bit of hay. It sure made me want to smoke it :).

Spring morning and a bowl of EMP in my hand ready to light. I lit it relatively easy and was a bit disappointed at how uneventful the experience began...continued and...ended. Moreover, it smoked hot, had a nasty bite to it and was extremely mild to the taste, absolutely nothing what the smell of the tin promised. Not really sure if I quite got it right, I decided to put it aside. The next morning, I switched pipes and made sure I packed and lit it "by-the-book". Oh boy, it was a much better smoke with the taste of cream, peat and sweetness coming out. There was still a bite, still smoked relatively hot, but the experience was much more engaging. After I went through half of the tin, I realized that this tobacco is very finicky. It requires attention to detail when packing, lighting and sipping it, it needs a particular day with a particular humidity, it requires a lot of things to go right. Its like a a lady that you need to court appropriately and play your cards right to enjoy what will come next. However, if you do it right, you will be enjoying one of the best tobaccos out there.

My advice, before setting it aside and not "getting it", don't be too hasty. Try a different pipe, different packing style, different day. A lot of people did describe EMP as uneventful and boring. And I agreed with them when I first tried it, and I was wrong.

Blend Name: Dunhill Early Morning Pipe (Bulk)

Description on Tin: Sweet Oriental carefully blended with Bright and Red Virginias, pressed and lightly stoved. Great as the first pipe arousing the palate for the further pleasures of the day.

Looks: Mottled brown ribbon cut with a smattering of lighter and darker leaves

Tin Aroma: Pleasing. Moderate sweet virginias with an undercurrent of smoke and spice. Smoky and toasty. Reminds me of baking bread over a campfire in a way.

Taste: The orientals are the major note, with hints of smoke and sweetness joining in the party. It's flavorful, but without being overwhelming. Medium in body, medium in flavor. Retrohaling brings up more spice and smoke, but isn't something I advocate doing a ton with this blend. It strengthened the flavors, but didn't add much to them.

Smokability: An easy smoker. 2 lights for the whole bowl, and smoked down to white ash.

Room Note: Lightly smoky, seems a bit cigarette-ish, which is no surprise as the blends are composed of almost the same things in different proportions from what I understand. As usual I smoked outside, so room note observations are from my shirt and beard 45 minutes after I came in the house.

Ponderings: I like this blend. It does in fact wake the palate without being overwhelming. Made for a beautiful morning here in Minneapolis sitting on the front step, with the birds chirping as the day warmed. It's a thoughtful blend, in that it requires no attention whatsoever.

This smoke is for: Anyone looking for a simple smoke they could have all day that's quite balanced. People looking for an easy entry into English/Balkan blends. People looking to work on their pipe packing/smoking technique, as it packs and burns easily.

Summary: Overall I like it. Since it's not too pricy I'll probably always keep a few ounces around.

This is one Dunhill mixture I held off trying for some time. Being fond of Nightcap and Mixture 965, I assumed that this blend would be bland to me. Quite the contrary, I found this blend to be stronger than I thought. A clean pipe, and a slow smoking technique brings out the best in this blend. I have a half a pound of this now cellared.

This was a huge disappointment. I was excited when it was re-released, but this isn't even similar to what I remember. Tastes like hundreds of other chemical-ladden blends from Scandinavia. It is so sad to see what has happened to this blend that was for years one of my cherished favorites.

This one was mild across the board for me. None of the tobaccos really stood out. It contained the mildest Virginia and Latakia I've ever tasted. I didn't detect any of the Turkish. I didn't think it was a bad smoke by any means, just nothing special. I actually liked the old Altadis match better than the original. That one had an outstanding Red Virginia that really made the blend. EMP does have good burning qualities. One relight after char and burns to a fine white ash.

A very good mix is mild smokes and does not burn the tongue. Your level of nicotine is between making the smoked stimulant and intoxicating should smoke at a slow pace no by not burning you language but not stun you, its flavor is average and very pleasant smoking, room is a little less sublime than the aromatics but leaves a good fragrance like a little to Easter but without being so cloying incense.

Kinda new to pipes but ADHD and OCD keep me buying a LOT of different things to try. Probably my favorite thing about pipe smoking. SO many things to try. ANYWAY, this tobacco is SO not "me"! But... I know the Dunhill stuff has been around forever and lots of folks are in love with it, and I was in the mood for something not sweet or flavored and wanted to try something "English". This stuff ROCKS. I love it. Which, is really weird cause as I say it's SO not "me". I dig chocolate, rum, raisin-ish, vanilla, caramel... you know the aro thing. This is NONE of that. PLUS I really do NOT like Latakia. I've gotten some stuff from P&C that had latakia and tossed it immediately in the trash upon opening. I stayed with it though and was rewarded with awesomeness. My wife doesn't really like ANY tobacco product but this one was one of the least objectionable to date, which for anyone else is a 5 Star Rating in terms of Room note.

If you enjoy English style tobacco,s there is nothing not to like here. The Taste is wonderful, Turkish and latakian notes just in the right measure no bite, great ribbon cut keeps lit and smokes beautifly with just the right amount of moisture straight out of the tin.

Perfect for the early morning smoke, Dunhill got this one right.

3yrs down the line and still this blend is my old friend.

I think the review by Pipe Newb nailed this tobacco. I wish I could pick out the flavors like he does. Not much more to add other that this is a good tobacco for me to just light, smoke, and enjoy without much effort. I tend to be a wet smoker, but this tobacco is one of the few that burns to the bottom of the bowl for me without much prodding.

I love Nightcap as well, but EMP is more milder and has a nice subtle character to it. A very comforting tobacco if you enjoy English blends I think.

I always find it amazing how people who typically don't enjoy English blends will try one and then write a review on how bad it is. I laud them for trying it, but if it is not your cup of joe in general and you don't like it, drop it and move on IMHO.

I bought a tin of this on a whim in the Hong Kong airport in January. I didn't know anything about it but had not smoked in a while and wanted to find something I enjoyed smoking.

I've never been a cigarette smoker and so my nicotine tolerance is not very high. I began smoking through the tin and being my first experience with anything English, it was a bit much at first. As I made my way through the tin, the nicotine buzzes began to lessen and become enjoyable, and the flavors began to appear.

This is a fine english tobacco. It's not too heavy on the Nicotine, the cut is a standard ribbon - well cut, I might add. The tin note is good - no toppings or flavors here, of course, but a great english aroma.

It packs easily, initial moisture content was very good, and burns well. The room note isn't something I would want in my home - remember, it's an english! But it is a great light english blend for those beginning to venture into the English world, and also for those who have been there many years. This is a staple tobacco and it's no mystery why.

A good, flavorful tobacco - another popular English that I wanted to try after enjoying Squadron Leader. Not as heavy on the Latakia as SL, but makes up for it with a more complex taste. I had to do a few relights, but this was straight from the tin and it wasn't really a chore. In keeping with its name, this would not have ruined my mouth for the rest of the day; there was no tongue bite at all and I had no trouble swapping between this and an aromatic through the day - I fully tasted and appreciated both. I would enjoy this tobacco any time.

Early Morning Pipe is another classic english blend, light and peculiar. It is recommended for a morning smoke, but if you are a latakia lover you can also use it in the afternoon and in the evening. I like it, but it is nothing special. A normal english mixture, nothing more nothing less. In my personal system rating (from 1 to 10) my score is 7 and two stars.

UPDATE 2020 - 12 - 30 : In my opinion this is a two stars latakia tobacco but….. Really I do not think a latakia mixture could be a morning pipe, a morning smoking, but if latakia is your all day smoke, then I think this is a four stars for a morning smoke. Yes a four star! Balanced, quite light in the English tradition, perfect for a morning pipe. So, generally two stars, but four stars for a morning pipe and for this reason I consider it appropriate adding a star to the final judgment.

This being #400 as far as reviews go, I'll do my best to add something to the mix. This blend has been a favorite of mine for several years and is a classic go-to light English blend. I had smoked my way through a number of tins, and only recently got into the bulk offering. I'm not sure I can tell much of a difference between the two, though the bulk seems significantly less homogenous as far as the positioning of the leaves in the bag. That is to say that from pipe to pipe there are variations in the percentage of each component tobacco. Variations that are detectable in the taste. That is not to say that this is unpleasant, just that some bowls are tastier than others.

The tin aroma is only faintly sweet from some of the darker virginias. The latakia is definitely notable on the nose and dominates the smell. The orientals don't seem to add much to the aroma. The room note is very similar to cigarettes. I haven't gotten any complaints regarding smell. The tobacco is fairly dry and easy to light, requiring few relights. This smoke is a roller coaster ride of earthy and sweet Virginias punctuated by the dry earthy and aromatic floral quality of the oriental. The latakia provides a steady bass that is ever present. Overall a tasty smoke that is smooth on the retrohale. This medium bodied smoke is not particularly strong nicotine wise, but is notable if pushed hard. I definitely recommend every piper try this blend at least once, and if you didn't like it in years past, give it another look. Wonderful with black coffee. I have noted a bit of tongue bite when I have pushed it unwittingly hard, though this is generally a smooth smoke. I definitely plan on continuing to age some of this long term.

This is the first tobacco I ever smoked from a Tin. I originally learned about this from the /r/pipetobacco subreddit where its often a part of most newcomers "haul" and decided if enough people were talking about it then its worth a try. This is light airy smoke with gentle flavors great for the first smoke of the day, another added bonus is this blend right out of the tin smells just like a barbeque which is a great smell however it doesn't taste like that at all.

All and all no regrets over this purchase and this is another ill likely be smoking for some time to come.

Another one I really could not understand why people like this tobacco. Burns too quick. Not distinctive in any way. Strenght-mildness no. A very special aroma, no. Why then? For the first bowl go with SG Skiff, you will like it more

Edit: I am close to giving up on this tobacco. Smelled..again and again. İnhaled from nose, blowed away from nose...Not inhaled...Nothing. I can not pick up anything either with the smell or the taste of this tobacco, that is special.

Wow...wasn't ready to find this so good. Breaking in a new pipe with this and have to say this is a real good blend. Light (not overly so), naturally sweet, interesting. It is thought provoking as in "When the shop has this in bulk why did you buy it in a tin?" and "Why haven't you gone back to buy the other 10 dusty tins that were hiding on the shelf behind the Mac Baren tins?" Easy to like, burns slight hot if not careful. Very good overall. If this is Nightcap "light" I've got to try Nightcap.

I've been working my way through numerous highly rated English blends, from both Dunhill and Samuel Gawith. The main difference here, is the lack of a latakia content, and more red virginias, what are, for me, at the heart of this smoke. There is a decent intertwining of the virginia and orientals, and I imagine the latakia is very subtle, just to balance the blend out.

It's a cool, easy smoking blend, and very vibrant for an English blend, compared to say a latakia heavy, like Dunhill 965. This has a wonderful aroma in the tin, and that aroma does carry through into the taste, with a subtle wood and oak, balanced with a clear, crisp oriental/virginia mix. I can see why this may remind you of early morning, when the day is so clear, and you've got a spring to your step ready to start your day.

The virginia isn't as strong as something like Rattray's old virginia, and the overall blend of other tobaccos in here make this really mellow, and I can empathise with the recommendation by Dunhill here as having this as your first bowl of the day. Overall, about 3 out of 4 stars for me. A good quality tobacco, but a little too subtle in taste to give that full body experience that other Dunhill English blends can submerge you with.

I love this tobacco. It is meant to get your day started with a nice nicotine kick. If you're not used to heavier blends, then you might want to baby step it. I find myself reaching for this over my other Dunhill Tins. The orientals in this are just enough to create another realm to the flavor while enjoying the other aspects of a traditional English blend.

Don't want to write too much, but if you want a bit more umph to your smoke, and still have an excellent flavor, try this.

Update: I have been going through phase of limiting my Latakia intake but this blend still finds its way to the top. The shifting flavors make this a very complex blend. The Orientals and Virginias seem to do most of the flavor driving with just enough latakia to keep it interesting. My favorite Dunhill by far.

This is a light english if you're looking for lots of latakia, as many seem to be, look elsewhere. It is a subtle tobacco one to be savoured. The merest smattering of latakia weaves in and out of the virginias and orientals. A nice subtle blend. I like to add perique to it but it's very good without too.

I really appreciate the quality of this tobacco. It burns great and has a pretty good punch. Several folks have mentioned that Early Morning is a bit uninteresting. Funny, the first time I smoked it, I was reminded of the term "plain Jane" but it is a good sort of "plain Jane". That hot cup of black coffee mixes great with Early Morning. Later, try Early Morning layered with Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture and/or Balkan Sasieni.

I am not a fan of this stuff. I get tongue bite no matter how I smoke this. The flavor is bad and it is just not an enjoyable smoke. I have found a good use of it though. I never smoke a bowl to the complete bottom so this makes for a good toss away buffer between the tobacco I am smoking and the bottom of the bowl. As soon as I near this stuff I am done. Bowl is cleaned and Dunhill trashed.

I can see why this tobacco is suggested as a "great first pipe of the day" I smoked it right after breakfast with a cup of black coffee and let me tell you. Sublime! Tin note is leathery with a hint of tangy citrus. You can almost smell eggs and OJ with bacon and beans in the tin (well, perhaps just in my imagination). The star of the show is definitely the tangy bright virginias however they are not overpowering and compliment the Turkish exquisitely with just a dash of Latakia. the Nicotine is very low. I am not sure why people below are saying this tobacco has a heavy nicotine content as it really doesn't and I am sensitive to nicotine and don't like a heavy nicotine hit. This is a great first pipe, second pipe, all day smoke and a light after dinner smoke however I would go for a rich full English for after dinner, the point is this is just a great all around blend and a must for everyone's regular rotation.

I smoke aromatics more than I do English blends and I don't smoke very often.

If you are a bit of a weekend warrior with smoking like me then this is a good English blend for you to try.

It is the most finely cut tobacco I have smoked to date, which I think is why it smokes down so consistently and so nicely (just ash at the end of most smokes). The flavor is pretty mild so I can see why folks who smoke daily would get bored with this but for me (1-2 bowls a week on average) it is perfect. It is not sweet like an Aro, but it won't leave you smelling like you slept in a cigar bar the night before.

[RABBIT TRAIL] It has been my experience that the more frequently I smoke, the more I have a taste for stronger English blends.

For example, if I have smoked 3-4 times in a given week and light up a bowl of Billy Budd (which is a full English tobacco) it is actually quite enjoyable. However, if I have gone 2+ weeks without smoking and light up a bowl of Billy Budd... well, it's nasty. Way too strong, and too much flavor.

Not so with EMP. I can light up a bowl of this pretty much whenever and I consistently enjoy the crap out of it[/RABBIT TRAIL]

Dunhill Early Morning Pipe: First Impressions.

Scenario: Saturday morning, 9:00 AM. I've just finished a breakfast of country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit, hash browns, OJ, and freshly brewed coffee. I poured a second cup of java, and grabbed my newly refurbished 1970's, Jobey Dansk freehand, and a new tin of Dunhill EMP. This is my first time smoking this blend. I am a huge fan of Dunhill flake and Dunhill Nightcap.

The pipe packed and lit very easily. The tobacco had perfect moisture right out of the tin. Three false lights, and three tamps, and its off to the races.

I was looking for a milder version of Nightcap. My first few puffs were frankly, "yuck." Stong puffing produced copious smoke and a harsh, unpleasant taste. The pipe burned hot, and the experience wasn't enjoyable. I experienced a little stomach gurgle from the nicotene content. Time to tamp the pipe and reconsider the situation.

Apparently this is a tobacco that needs to be sipped slowly to be enjoyed properly. As soon as I adjusted to a more leisurely pace, the tobacco mellowed out, the pipe cooled down, and the taste and experience improved dramatically. The tobacco still didn't have a very pronounced taste, and it wasn't strong at all. EMP tasted like a straight Virginia blend to me - no Oriental tobacco was noticeable in the taste. The strength is what I was expecting though from a mild, early in the day, blend. The burn remained good, abundant smoke - a mild, mellow experience.

This tobacco is perfect for a first smoke of the day. Not surprisingly, it pairs well with coffee.

The first half of the bowl was one star for me, the second half, three stars - so I'm giving it two stars for now. It is not nearly as enjoyable, to me anyway, as Dunhill flake or Nightcap. I prefer something a little more full flavored like FVF. I will smoke the tin that I have, but I don't see myself buying this in the future. YMMV.

I wanted to see if a more leisurely approach, sipping slowly, would provide an enjoyable full bowl experience. I poured a third cup of coffee, and packed a second bowl. I should have paid closer attention to some earlier reviews regarding the high nicotene content, because Dunhill Early Morning Pipe proceeded to lay me out. Five trips to the restroom. Nauseous. Shivers. Cold sweats. I had to fight to keep from throwing up. A most unpleasant experience for a couple of hours. I am recovered enough to where the experience is "almost" humorous, but in the future, I definitely won't be smoking two bowls back to back. It seems like I have to learn everything the hard way, and this was surely a lesson, albeit painful, learned. Don't take this tobacco blend lightly. It may be an early morning blend, but it still has the nicotene punch of its big brother, Dunhill Nightcap.

Upon a recommendation from my father I tried a tin of this Orlik-blended Dunhill classic. I have smoked almost the entire tin before posting these personal impressions; smoking this in a variety of pipes, at different times of day, and with (and without) my usual beverage accompaniments.

To those who thoroughly enjoy this, my best wishes to you for your continued pleasure, but for me it misses badly. Perhaps it is my personal oral chemistry and the fact that I do recall smoking any "Balkan" without Latakia other than some McClelland Grand Orientals before, but EMP's flavor is just not to my taste. The first bowl, smoked without beverage, was very sweet. The tobacco itself is gorgeously presented in the tin and the tin aroma is promising. However, at the 1/3 point in the burn the blend turned extremely salty, objectionably so. Moreover it seems to contain the same 'cavendish' Virginias that are found in Orlik/Dunhill 965 and Standard Mixtures. In those blends I found them overwhelming, smothering the blend. I think this same treatment is in London Mixture as well but the Latakia in it perfects that blend (into one of my favorites). Here it does not marry well with the potpourri of Balkans/Orientals it has. In fact, I cannot tell what these varieties might be.

The last 1/3 of the bowl turns astringent.

At other times I find the blend better and suspect the long, beautiful ribbon cut has not given itself to blending well resulting in a wide variation from bowl to bowl.

Smoked with my favorite 100% Colombian coffee I rarely finish the entire bowl. Smoked with some scotch, it is passable. It does remind me of a mix of Rothmans and Camel cigarettes in both taste and room note.

Well, I have now 'been there, done that'.

The Dunhill Legacy is to pipes what the proverbial apple pie is to Americanism. The Dunhill line of tobaccos ranks among some of the oldest and most respected, put on a pedestal with names like sobranie.

Whether today's Dunhill blends do justice to the blends of yore I cannot say, and for the purposes of this much beloved web site the point is a moot one. I personally believe the Dunhill tobaccos are of the finest quality one can buy, and the legacy behind them is just icing on the cake.

Early Morning Pipe is what I consider one of the finest in the pantheon of these fine blends. It is not a powerhouse, but beautifully balanced. In the history of pipe tobaccos some names can be misleading, or utterly unrelated to the tobacco itself. This is one blend where the name is perfectly fitting. This is an excellent first pipe of the day, not overwhelming to the palate. It is full of flavor but nothing so big and bold as to overwhelm the palate. This to me is also one of the few Dunhill blends I would consider to be an "all day smoke". Wonderful blend, beautiful virginias and orientals blended with a deft hand. Masterfully balanced. Highly recommended and another must try for anyone considering themselves an avid participator in the quest that is pipe smoking.

Some companies just do things better than others. Not being blessed with an "einstein" for a tongue, I simply trust my simple tastes and find myself in sync with this blend. As reported earlier the same held true for Nightcap. Both Dunhill [sic] Orlik blends are, for me, simply right, simply delicious.

I have been disappointed with MM 965, it used to be smooth, nutty and slightly sweet, now it's just plain old harsh and tarry, I hope it's just a bad tin.

Early morning pipe however was a pleasant surprise, smooth yet full flavored, it has that typical dunhill dry and robust taste.

I may simply smoke this instead of 965 from now on.

After reading so many good reviews on this website, I decided to try this stuff myself.. this blend of tobacco left me nothing short of nauseous. It tasted like a stale cigarette, and leaves a smell in the room that smells exactly the same. It is heavy in nicotine, which I do not find pleasing for a morning smoke. or an afternoon smoke... or anytime for that matter.. I don't understand how smokers like this stuff. If you want something that taste like a cigarette, then smoke a cigarette. I couldnt even get half way through a full bowl.. after i write this review, im going outside and dumping it in the grass.. waste of $10.00.. total CRAP..

OK, deleted the old review, since I found out that much of my taste was completely off in this blend and in others. (I had some bug of some sort.)

This is quite good blend, with the Orientals being the dominant flavor here.

UPDATE (2012-11-01): OK, just revisited this blend after picking up some bulk at my local shop, and apparently I've missed it a lot. This is just fantastic now after I've had about year of sampling other blends. This one stands out. Upgrading to 4 and adding to my personal hall of fame (i.e., "favorites" on this site). That makes 3/3 Dunhill blends I've smoked added to my favorites. Something tells me I should be smoking more Dunhill.

First pipe of the day it always does the job, enough N to keep me happy until lunchtime, enough light oriental flavour to make smoking it enjoyable, but mild enough to manage with the first coffee of the day. I don't smoke this at other times of the day, but there's no reason for that other than I have too many tobaccos and not enough pipe smoking opportunities.

OK ORLIK! I've tried your offering of My Mixture 965 - good, Royal Yacht - good, and now EMP - most impressive. Once again, from opening the tin both the aroma and texture are a near perfect representation of Murrey's recipe and the flavour should be savoured on its own merits, without dwelling on the past. A number of EMP devotees (of 20 years +) in the shop allowed me the privilidge of getting one tin before they bought the entire stock. They give it the thumbs-up also, so I am definetly not alone. Definetly 4 stars until I can see some consistancy over time, but I think this new EMP will get more and more admirers.

Only the Virginia Flake and Navy Rolls and two more mixtures to go and this will complete my return and reviews of the 7 factory blends that Orlik has re-launched under license.

For me a great allday-smoke. Highly recommended for pipesmokers entering the world of english-blends for the first time. Since you won't get a heavy latakia-punch like other english-blends. Tobacco has perfect moisture. Burns excellent. The sidestream of this tobacco is wonderful. Gentle sweet. I don't know why, but everytime i smoke EMP the image of bacon and sweet honey comes into my mind.

update 9/24/2009 this stuff is getting better and better with every bowl i smoke. Fantastic. I enjoy it in the morning as much as i do enjoy it in the evening. Every puff reveals a different taste...sweet, oriental, mystic, subtle smokiness of latakia in the background. i like this blend...case closed.

EMP has been around for a long time and has changed several times, according to who is making it for Dunhill. The original was pure ambrosia; later iterations varied. The best of it is as fine a mild or light English as there is, it is still near the top of my list. The sweet aged Virginias are round and mellow. The orientals are lightly spiced and fragrant. There is an unknown ( to me at least) that adds a wine-like quality that lingers on the pallet for some time. I understand it has become hard ( if not impossible) to find in some areas. If you can't find it or are not happy with the present form of it, try the Altadis matching substitute. It is not bad.

EMP is still the most well balanced, friendly smoke, good and original flavor in the Va/oriental tobacco available today, this blend is my reference to evaluate other Va/Oriental blends made by other tobacco makers.

This smoke is delightful, Tasty and mild. Inexpensive (I buy it in bulk), easy to smoke and maintenance-free. The perfect all-day smoke.

Simply; if you like oriental blend, buy some Early Morning Pipe!

Lately I have smoked quite a few oriental and I can say that compared to the rest I was not impressed.

If this was the first of the kind I had tasted, I would have written a better review. It contains a good dose of nicotine. It has a honey, mild taste of Virginia, which is enriched with a good quality oriental. There is no way I can smoke it in the morning. Maybe late in the evening.

I have written enough about the last Dunhill (I will not try another after De Luxe Navy Roll DUNHILL) I have bought.

Update :How times have changed....

Now, after several years I think it is one of the best oriental tobaccos, and always take care to have 3-4 closed tins in my "cellar". Very mild and sweet flavor. Easy going tobacco for every hour of the day.

The only thing that I can think better to wake up with than EMP and black coffee would be waking up to Heidi Klum making me breakfast. No seriously, it is a great morning smoke. Light and soft with just the right amount of latakia for a 5:00 a.m. pipe. There are very few for that matter Orientals that have such a small amount of latakia, it is a nice change of pace. Don?t smoke it too fast, you might burn your tongue. There is for me a noticeable jolt of nicotine that I get from this blend. This is again one of those blends that I would consider classic.

Dunhill's (Orlick) Early Morning Pipe has the least amount of nicotine of any Dunhill blend that I have smoked. Unfortunately, that fact did not help this pitiful weed. Indeed, the stuff looks fine. It is a pleasant earthy-coloured ribbon cut. It smells unremarkable in the tin--essence of rolling tobacco. I did my best to smoke this stuff but I only found that it made my pipe too hot, my wife retch, my throat sore, and my mouth shrivel. The part about my wife I certainly can get by, but the room note even made me ill. In a word, Early Morning Pipe is dreadful. I could barely smoke this appalling rubbish. A colleague of mine smokes cigarettes and occasionally a pipe. He enjoys Early Morning Pipe. Like I mentioned with Peterson's Irish Oak, this might prove well as a transitional smoke for those looking to make the switch from cigarettes to pipes. Admittedly, by mid-bowl Early Morning Pipe improved slightly by a mellowing of the harshness. Still, I will not smoke it again. Indeed, if I had to begin every morning with this foul weed I would eventually end up jumping off a bridge by afternoon. This is the 100th review of Early Morning Pipe to date.

This was my first english blend I tried back in the '70s and it remains my reference point for the genre. EMP is my favorite vehicle for Orientals. It is gentle enough to smoke all day, although I prefer a variety. Everything I could say has already been well said. This is easily my favorite Dunhill.

Update 5/05: "Favorite Dunhill" it may remain, but the quality of them all has dropped precipitously to mediocre; I've demoted by two stars. If there is some kind of dating method, buy only old tins. So much for a grand old name.

I hope the infection doesn't spread to Gawith.

I'm given to understand that this is the prototypical light English. That said, I fail to see what all the fuss is about. I found EMP to be rather lacking in the character department. This observation becomes particularly apparent when comparisons are drawn to similar blends such as Piccadilly. I would have another bowl if offered, but can't see myself purchasing another tin.

Unbelievable! Quite simply unbelievable! For some reason I have avoided trying this weed. I think it was the words mild and delicate that caused me to instill a subconsious aversion to trying this. I have since been cured of this aversion to say the least. I recently read somewhere that the references to strength that Dunhill(Murray) uses on the tins is in reference to Latakia content. Well, this may not have a high Latakia content, but it is certainly rich and satisfying. This blend showcases how important the Va's are in an English blend. These are simply the best there are. This has become my new favorite Dunhill blend, right beside Nightcap. I detect no flavorings here, just the absolute very best weed there is. The blend does pick up some intensity the further down it burns, but never nips, nor gets sour. The last third marries the VA's and Orientals into a perfect tobacco bliss! You must try this.... Now...... Hurry.....!
