Soft and aromatic blend of all AAA burleys.

Notes: Prior to 1864, Red Burley was the type of Burley grown in Kentucky. The Civil War was raging and because of a scarcity of seed, George Webb purchased what was available. This new variety, White Burley, proved to be superior and forever changed smoking history. This soft and aromatic blend of all AAA Burleys is testimony to that fact.

Mild to Medium Very Mild Mild to Medium Pleasant to Tolerable

A mild light and dark Kentucky burley blend with light cocoa notes, abetted by some very earthy, woody nuttiness. There's a light vanilla topping that mildly sublimates the burley. The strength is a couple of steps past the mild mark. The taste is a hair short of the center of mild to medium. Has a mild nic-hit. Won't bite, but may get slightly harsh if puffed like your life depended on it. There's not that much complexity here because it's designed to be an all day semi-sweet companion that burns well with no chemical taste to disrupt the experience. I do get more nuance of flavor when I use a wide bowl to smoke it in. Burns cool, clean, and slightly slow with a very consistent taste to the end. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights. Has a very pleasant after taste.

This is a fair blend. I would explain it simply as a mild burley with a light sweet topping. It's not exceptional, but it's also not bad at all. At the right price, I would add it to my rotation. It's a good smoke when you want something nice and mellow and not soaked in casing.

Just some food for thought. People who advertise that they either don't like aromatics, or don't smoke them often, then give a bad rating to a aromatic tobacco, are a bit ridiculous. If you do not like a type of tobacco, your rating is going to be negative most all of the time. Don't rate what you don't smoke.

I ordered this blend along with Black Swan and Molto Dolce since I figured if I hated those two Aromatics, at the very least this plain Burley would be one that I would enjoy and it was! I got a mild Cocoa and Vanilla type topping but nothing near what I would call aromatic. A very pleasant and mild White Burley with a whiff of topping, although known for their Aromatics, Sutliff having been around for more than a Century have access to very high quality Burley as well and Kentucky Planter showcases what good Burley can provide when blended by a master blender. Smoke this in a wide bowl pipe, preferably a cob, the wide chamber will allow a lot of tobacco surface area to be lit and provide the most flavor, smokes very cool and has a little nicotine kick but still suitable for a newbie wanting to try a Burley blend. I would purchase this again and do recommend it to veterans and newbies alike, there's a lot to enjoy here!

This topping is either chocolate/vanilla or I'm getting a cocoa note from the Burley that's combining with a vanilla topping. Either way I'm getting a very nice chocolate/cocoa/vanilla flavor here. Tastes great. I get just the faintest hint of Kentucky. The Burley is mild with a hint of nuts. This is a fine blend and if it had just a little more body it would be 4 stars for me. As is I have to go with 3.

Mild in body. Mild in flavoring. Mild to medium in flavor. A very nice smoke.

From the description, I expected to like this more than I did. It presents as a basic burley. It has a slight topping that that provides a whiff of sweet or vanilla. There is a sour quality to the flavor profile. The topping mostly burns off in the first half bowl. This is a solid but unremarkable smoke. I may warm up to it as I finish the tin, but it is more of a 2.5 stars for me.

I expected a full tasting Burley with a slight aromatic touch. Popping the tin and huffing the tin had me looking forward to firing up a bowl. Well that's where it went downhill, after filling the pipe and a char light I knew this wasn't going to go well. As I got the bowl going the blend was hot and flat tasting, the aroma was alright but it was tasteless. I smoked it in three different pipes and it was the same, even in a Meershaum. I always have some BCA on hand for just this occasion. I ended up at about a 50% mix, then waited a couple weeks for it to marry together. Well that saved the day the BCA sweetened up the Burley and slowed the burn rate down. It still starts out a little hot but settles down quick. The BCA is the dominant tobacco, it burns clean and has a pleasant sweetness, As for Planter by itself, you can forget about it!

This Burley blend is AWESOME!!!!!! This is a nice mellow smoke with no bite what so ever. It packs nice lights easily right out of the tin. It has a nutty flavor with a hint of vanilla. It burns to a nice white ash and keeps its mellow flavor all the way through the entire smoke. The room note takes you back to simpler times. If you are a fan of Burley tobacco's or are just looking for a nice mellow change of pace this is a must try. The only complaint I have about this tobacco is that it only comes in 1.5oz. tins.

These tins were gifted to me and apparently came from the 2011 Chicago pipe show. On opening the tin, the first thing that strikes me is the broad cut of most of the tobaccos that comprise this blend. It looks similar to many C&D blends cut wise. The smell is lightly sweet and fruity in the tin. This burley is fairly dry and ready to smoke. Disturbingly there is a sticky dried out mess of tobacco dust and Im guessing topping at the bottom of the tin. This stuff gives cocoa and vanilla flavor that hovers above the quality burleys that lie beneath. This is a pleasant set it and forget it smoke for anytime. It is def an aro though given its pleasant sidestream and topping that comes through in the taste. I would recommend this to burley lovers that don't mind some topping and don't rule out a mild smoke. Similar to H&H CBK but milder and with vanilla as an additional topping.

This tin was obtained as a sample from this year's Chicagoland pipe show. For this review, a Peterson Donegal 106 Rocky was used.

I'm not partial to aromatic pipe tobaccos. However, I do give them a try once in a while so as to better "educate" myself. I'd like to be able to provide some sensible suggestions should one ask me for my recommendation. I try not to be bias, and I do try keeping an open mind and rate aromatic blends for what they are.

Upon opening the tin, one can detect an aroma which registers to be something like vanilla. The Moisture level was okay, and the tobacco packed well. Strength is not present in this tobacco. Finishing the entire bowl was an agonizing task as the taste was so bland. The tobacco did burn well, all the way down to the bottom of the bowl. I had to relight only once, but that was due to smoker's error.

So far, in the Sutliffe aromatic line, there is only one blend I can recommend, this definitely is NOT it.

As the first reviewer of this blend, I was hoping to write a good review. However, it is what it is. I am NOT RECOMMENDING this at this time.

Not exactly mild and not exactly strong, this blend comes in somewhere in the middle of the Burley blend strength scale. The tin presentation is of a rough cut broken flake of darkish components. The tin aroma is of a typical Burley blend masked, to a very great extent, by a topping of sweet and, vaguely, vanilla flavoring that just gets in the way. This aroma is for tin presentation only and disappears as soon as you put the 400 degrees to it; so, don't let it bother you and proceed to a very decent Burley/Kentucky smoke. In every pipe I smoked it in, this blend smoked best in the top half of the bowl and became stronger and harsher as you proceeded down the smoke. Kentucky Planter never became harsh enough to raise a complaint and I agree with reviewer Gentleman Zombie 2015-03-28 that it is a fine blend that needs something a little extra to bump it to four stars. Still, a good solid Burley smoke that I am stashing away at three stars.

Similar Blends: Kentucky Planter reminds me of something I have smoked in the past that I can't quite name. It is lodged halfway between two other Burley blends that I have smoked and reviewed recently: Butternut Burley by Pipes and Cigars (milder end) and John Cotton's Double Pressed Kentucky (stronger end).

A beautiful mahogany brown wide cut tobacco... call me weird but I loved the feel of this on my fingers. Slight scent of vanilla in the tin. Required no drying time - just locked, loaded and lit.

I didn't find much flavor to this one. There was a very light vanilla in both the taste and room note but the barest smidge of tobacco taste to the rear, which came forth a bit more as the bowl progressed. Neither flavor asserted itself much. I liked the fact that this stayed lit extremely well and gave off nice clouds of smoke. Struck me as kind of a OTC-meets-aromatic blend, with neither side overruling the other. I And it didn't get the least bit perturbed with more aggressive puffing, as it turned just barely bitter. Smoked slowly it was an extremely laid-back blend with no overbearance of flavor... just perfect for someone that smokes all day and wants something that won't demand his attention away from other tasks. If that sounds like something you'd like, this is recommended.

I really wanted to try this tobacco. Besides, this is my first tobacco Sutliff. Tin beautiful, when I opened it, felt a sweet aroma. I am not a fan of aromatics, so was disappointed. I was waiting for something else. As well moistened tobacco tin and cut finely enough, but smoking is not as not affected. Light smoke, sweet taste. People around like flavor. I do not regret that bought this tobacco, but more of it will not baying.
