Scottish Mixture’s smooth, flavorful and mild middle-cut blend is enduringly popular. The fresh and delicately flowery aroma comes from select grades of Virginia, burley, Kentucky and a small portion of Oriental tobaccos – refined with a dash of the finest Scotch whisky.

I returned to pipe smoking after an almost 15 year hiatus. The first time taken up the pipe, it was as I was transitioning from my late teens into my early twenties. As many beginners, I started with heavily treated aromatic blends because that's what the shop keeper had on his counter for a meager college budget. Finding my pipe cumbersome, & the tobaccos harsh within a short time I'd abandoned the briar "for a season."

Years passed & I dug out my old briars after discarding cigarettes. After locating a pipe/cigar shop, I went inside to seek the elusive "perfect tobacco." This time, the shop keeper took the time to explain what an "aromatic" or an "english" tobacco was, and what makes them so very unique from one another. Seeing tinned tobaccos on his shelf I inquired why they were so expensive compared to his bulk offerings. His reply, simply: "You get what you pay for."

I grabbed Davidoff's Scottish Mixture only because I'd heard of Davidoff products & enjoy whiskey. ( I know, such PROFOUND criteria...) THIS was the blend that extended it's hand to me & said, "welcome to pipe smoking...glad you're here." It's characteristics blend between an English and an aromatic. This blend smoked easily, and was quite forgiving as I began to learn packing & lighting techniques. For the first time, I could begin to distinguish Virginas, Orientals, Burleys, etc. This was the first tobacco I'd tried that wasn't tongue bite with a side order of sugar.

Understand, I'm not saying this is perfection. I'm saying it deserves higher regard for being just what it claims to be; a quality product.

Full in flavor without much strength pretty much describes this Davidoff offering (IMO, of course).

I have struggled with Whiskey blends over the years. They just seem to burn a little warm to me but this one was different. I smoked a couple of bowls back to back and enjoyed every puff. I think I smoked multiple bowls until the tin was empty. This is delicious stuff!

Davidoff - Scottish Mixture.

This one seems to get a pretty middle of the road recommendation: at present it's mostly two and three star reviews. Here's my opinion:

The tin has a really subtle whisky note to it. It's that light it could be whisky, brandy, or any type of spirit. The amount of water to the blend is exemplary; open, fill, and smoke!

Once I'm piping some Scottish Mixture I straight away think I'm in the more positive category of reviewers.

To begin with, it lit easily, and straight away burned well. As many people point out, the whisky has been lightly added; it is light, but my opinion on that is if I wanted a blend that's packed with whisky flavour, I'd buy a strong aromatic. In Scottish Mixtures defence, it does say it's only been refined with a 'Dash' of Scotch!

I enjoy the tobacco flavours that come through. I reminds me of an English that's been told it's "got to chill out a bit": there is a slight woodiness there, but this is very insouciant. The Kentucky and Burley are, to my palate, the most headstrong of the tastes and they account for the majority of the smoke. The Turkish and Virginia are a lot farther down the flavour profile.

In my opinion, the nicotine's medium in Scottish Mix'. As I've often said though, that's a positive to me; it can be enjoyed by all different varieties of smoker: nicotine lovers, and flavour only folks.

After a few bowls I can easily say I enjoy this. It's not my favourite, I'd still only Recommend as opposed to Highly Recommending, but it's good. My first pipe full said "four stars", but a few bowls say "three is a justifiable rating".

Recommended.

A nice but a bit neutral blend.itried several scottish blends(R.Mc connell, dunhill aperitif)but this blend is nothing like others.the reason is the lack of latakia.when you open it you definitelly get whisky.good quality tobacco packs easy burns nice and never bit me!you get the nut and spice mixed with some sweetness wich is good.i would wanted more whisky flavour.you can start your day with it and end it it's mild and easy going.defenitelly worthy trying because you try a different scottish mix(no latakia).it will not dissapoint you but you won't get something unique from it

I’ve been smoking a pipe for nearly 25 years but only occasionally and without delving much into pipe tobacco although I was always in search for special cigarettes. For one or other reason I hadn’t smoked a pipe for quite a few years until last spring I decided to buy a tobacco again. The best – of disheartening few – makes available in my country is Davidoff so I tried my luck with the Scottish mixture and I was awed by this tobacco! I could not believe there were so good tobaccos available in Greece without me noticing. Many years ago I had tried some McClelland blends and those were the benchmark for me but it was so long ago I could not adequately compare. I then tried the Medalion Flakes which were also awesome and then I went to the Danish mixture which I did not like at all and left unsmoked. Meanwhile I sourced some very good tobaccos from abroad (Nightcap, McClelland Grand Orientals etc), and my knowledge of tobacco evolved swiftly. I wanted to come back to the Scottish mixture and see it anew. How would it taste to me now that I have smoked some really good tobaccos with pedigree?

Well, my first smoke at a café near the shop where I bought it was slightly disappointing. Not bad, but not much flavor either. In any case innocuous. Calling this tobacco aromatic sure does it a disservice. Casing is barely, if, noticeable at all. So, I thought I was going to mix it with some oriental leaf I have bought in bulk and make something out of it… Yet the same night I tried it again at the calm of my home office and it was perfectly fine, not exciting but still a good tobacco. It was mild in both strength and flavor with a wonderful sweet nutty aroma (burleys and orientals dominating if I have to place my bets) and also tasting fairly natural. In taste it was that it was lacking somehow as I mostly enjoyed this tobacco through the nose. It has much better aroma through the nostrils than flavor in the mouth. Quite dry on the palate, not much Virginia sweetness here but wonderful aroma. It also burns easily to the end and in general behaves nicely, does not get hot, and produces no tongue bite either you sip or smoke more aggressively. It produces a considerable amount of smoke as opposed to flake tobaccos I’ve tried, and it is indeed very forgiving as I read other reviewers stating as far as mechanics are concerned. For sure there are better tobaccos out there, but still this is highly recommended as a tobacco to start one’s adventure with. So three stars from me. It’s the tobacco that got me into smoking a pipe and giving up cigarettes after all…

Bearing in mind the inflated prices of Davidoff tobaccos in the already over-priced UK tobacco market, I cannot see any scenario in which I could recommend this to a pipe smoker, new or old. To be frank, I get a bit angry that a blend with this kind of low quality feels itself fit to command as ludicrously high a price (at the time of writing) as £22.90 for a 50g tin.

If you want a low-nicotine, mild-tasting smoke, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I tasted almost nothing smoking this tobacco and I'd recommend Clan or Gold Block from the local petrol station before I recommended this total rip-off to any undeserving soul.

In the midst of trying Scottish Blends. Davidoff comes across as a mostly neutral smoke. I don't taste the Scotch, but enjoy it nonetheless. The thing that surprised me was the N hit. Mush stronger than I was expecting. And I smoke NightCap and other strong choices often. I would put it in a similar category, but as one having less, but not bad flavor.

In contrast with English (more Latakia and Orientals than Virginia, orientals and Latakia dominant) and Balkan (more Orientals than Latakia and Virginia,Orientals dominant) in Scottish mixtures, Virginia is the dominant tobacco over the Orientals and contains little or no Latakia.

See my review in Peter Stokkbyee's "Balkan Supreme".

The taste of this mixture is so good, but the flavour is milder.

Whisky is noted mainly in the Blend, in the Tin, the tobacco, but much less in the smoke, bu noted. In the tin, the flavour is very good, bu the tobacco seems to be litle dried, not wet.

Not for people that enjoy Latakia, bu very good fot those that like natural aromatics. 3 Stars.

What a treat. Nice to find a lighter style English without overtly portioned Latakia. Rounds out my English blend for a lighter style when the mood strikes. Pleasant tin aroma and room notes. Wanted something similar to McConnells Scottish blend, and this hits the mark perfectly. Burley adds a nice “in the background” character, in sync with the Virginia sweetness. Davidoff website indicates “ refined with a dash of the finest Scotch whisky.” I didn’t notice this, but maybe because I was sipping a double rye whisky while enjoying the pipe. Highly recommended. As a start, the name of this blend got my attention. Despite it's whiskey topping, I think this is far from my expectations, but in a pleasant way. To my opinion, this could be an all day mild to medium tobacco, as the virginia and burley proportions are very well balanced in almost equal parts. Tends to smoke better half way down, showing nothing but white ash. Yeast and citro notes may hit you, with citron being slightly more present at the beginning. Recommended.

Medium-mild in strength and very tongue-friendly. Rather complex in taste. The most obvious being Burley, Kentucky (which is fire cured Burley) and Virginia. In each draught another one takes the lead. Some Oriental leaf is there, very much in the background, just enough to donate a little spice to the blend. A delicate floral note can be picked-up now and then, which can originate from natural tobacco or topping.

I am normally scared off by artificial flavourings. Here I find it unobtrusive. According to the producer, this blend has been cased with Scotch Whisky. But – I cannot find a single trace of it. The introduction (title) of this internet page states “Cut: Ready Rubbed”, which is definitely wrong. It is a Medium (or medium-fine) Ribbon Cut. Anyway, it is a smooth, tasty and mellow all-day smoke, not leading into depth.

This tin was dusty when purchased, aged 18 months, had proper seal, still a tad dry when opened.

Tin note somewhat Flake Medallion -like: fruitcakeish. Atypical perhaps if Dav, some sizeable stems, woody bits.

Flavoring all but gone post-char, decent base tobaccos, which took several bowls for me to discern. Here I'd hazard a guess that by removing the Turk component, it would make a smokeable VaBur. Burns very hot even at idle, tongue bite not a problem though.

As it is this blend is not flat...exactly, but its monotonous enough to be a one-tin wonder. I'll finish the tin, but won't be revisiting.

This is the first Davidoff I tried. I was immediately reminded of cigarette smoke. Perhaps because of the burley and Turkish. I even tried to inhale it to compare the experience. During the second half of the bowl, I was able to taste the added flavour. The hints of whisky, and the sweet caramel I suppose. Interestingly enough, the added aroma is just kept at the limit, or this would be an aromatic. Clearly a blend that appeals more to taste buds.

All in all, this is a quality tobacco. And I will remember that.

A mixture that is not bad except when compared to other similar mixtures. It is smoked with pleasure and ... with some care, since although it cannot be said that it is a tobacco that bites, it heats the pipe and is not absolutely harmless to the tongue. The aromatic component is more noticeable in the tin than during smoking, without this meaning that it goes unnoticed. The flavor is quite good and what predominates in it is virginia with the soft touch of liquor. If there were no other mixtures I could smoke more of this, but since there are many better mixes I don't think I will repeat this one.

It's simply a beguiling mix of tastiness. It doesn't like to bite it just wants to please. Some people may criticize a lack of character. Now for me the Virginia taste is greatly refined by the various condiments, resulting in a great blend.

Good quality. Solid taste. Honest but not bold.

Tin note is light and floral, which is typical of an oriental forward blend. The scotch is also noticeable, but not overwhelming. Medium sized ribbons pack and light easily. The orientals and scotch are balanced pretty well. I'm typically not a fan of whiskey flavored blends, but you can tell that the quality of the ingredients put this blend into a higher category than most whisky flavored blends. Burns well, and as with most blends, is much better when you smoke it slower. First few bowls didn't impress me all that much, but as I made my way through the tin, it began to grow on me.

Actually other than the barest suggestion at lighting up time this tobacco has no taste at all.

This is suprising as Davidoffs do a good tobacco. The Danish is great, and their Blue n' Reds are rather mild but at least have something about them.

The tin aroma almost saves this one, but not quite. I pushed this harder than usual and got no bite. Have to say it burns well all the tasteless way to the bottom of the bowl.

This blend is to scottish blends what MacBaren's Plum Cake is to english blends: mild, sweet, and approachable. Much like the latakia in PC, the orientals serve merely as a condiment, occasionally poking through with just a hint of extra spice to keep your attention. Similarly, the kentucky adds just a pinsh of earthiness to the blend. The main player here is definitely the virginias which provide ample sweetness to the blend. The whiskey casing is not distracting but serves to highlight the natural flavors of the tobaccos used. All in all this is a straight forward and playful blend, not complex but non the less satisfying for anyone looking for an all day smoke.

I’m sweeping some old tins from my cabinet, and this– alongwith Royalty and English Mixture – were sleeping since 2011.

Davidoff Scottish Mixture was the most expensive tobacco in Italy before the EUR. For this reason, plus the reputation of being produced in Holland (instead of England) at the time, I’ve stayed clear from trying it. Then, in 2011 I had the chance to buy some Davidoff’s at the Dubai Free Shop, and that made things easier.

I’ve never been able to imagine what this Scottish Mixture was about. It took me very unprepared when at the opening I saw the tobacco: basically a VaBur with some darker speck, not Latakia but some fired Burley. Maybe some Orientals too, very difficult to say. Whisky ? if that is in, it’s a feather. Very mild aroma, very natural. The quality of the leaves looks good but not fantastic, if I can say that… Humidity was perfect.

The smoke: the first bowls were from “acceptable” to “horrific”. This baby is not for the uncommitted smoke. After ten bowls or something, I understood that something pleasant could be had by the slowest and committed smoking. Every acceleration brought salty and bitter smoke, everything but pleasant. The pros: DSM is never prone to be hot and bitey, but every time you rush it becomes flavourless and cigarettish. Something like this I remember of the Gold Block.

At the end of the tin, I’m sure that will never buy DSM again. But cannot say it was a disaster. It’s simply that me smoking the pipe with this flat mixture is a non sense.

There is a claim of scotch added here and it’s definitely detectable however, it’s a highland or speyside addition, raisins and oak. As an Islay drinker, this is tolerable but not what’s preferred. Smokes a bit warm, my tin was perfect, not too moist, not too dry. I do not recommend rubbing out here, load in ribbons, lightly tamp and light. Have patience with this one the best of the flavour is in the mid to last 1/4 of the bowl similar to Davidoff cigars. A nice nutty/tobacco flavor tapering off to the Speyside leather, raisins and oak. Very good room note - no it won’t remind you of your Grandfather and his Dunhill but it won’t upset any who happen to be with you. Classic Davidoff and I wonder if the negative reviews smoked too wet or dry - this one needs and deserves to be perfect to light. It’s worth a try, it’s mild enough to be a daily bowl, and it won’t disappoint. That said, it’s not a feature tobacco or one to highlight in your collection.

I have tried this both 'fresh' and aged and although aging does slightly enhance some of the wine-like Virginia aroma, practically everything else fades. This is a 'smoke-now' tobacco.

Hello everybody.

Don't really know why the hell did I fall again in these kinda aromatized things.

Nothing special to underline here neither bad nor good. I do not sense the oriental as long as I lack kentucky punch. If they are really there they must be hidden quite well. The casing, which I found soapy and overwhelming on opening the tin, disappear troughout the bowl and that's good news. Unfortunately its place is never taken by any other news. Mild in strength and in "soul" I'd say.

I puffed rather slow and it doesn't bite, and this is the only other good thing I found.

I don't feel I'll have to recommend it, nor blame it to death. I only keep asking myself where might be the whiskey they talked about. :)

This is the lightest tobacco I have ever smoked. Let it dry for a few minutes and smoke it in your largest bowl to bring out the best this blend has to offer. The taste is somewhere between Darjeeling tea and walnut, neither of which I care for very much. The room note is walnut.

This tobacco is so light, you can comfortably smoke it at the office. The office is the only place where I would smoke this, because there are better options available for any other situation. This is my least favourite of the Davidoff offerings, and I won't buy it again. If you like a light smoke, Davidoff Danish Mixture is a better choice.

A very mild smoke. Perhaps timid is the word. Mac Baren's Mixture kicks this ones butt. After smoking a pipe of this, I honestly munched a handful of peanuts to make sure my tastebuds were still there and working. Yep. I taste peanuts. Packed a different pipe full of this stuff and tried again. Not because I liked it so much, but because I had to solve the mystery of the missing flavor. That and I could not believe something from Davidoff would come out so insipid. So much for brand familiarity. I find Mac Baren replacing several other brands lately, and not just because my local tobacco store is heavily laden with Mac Baren offerings.

If Mac Baren Mixture scottish blend is too strong for you, this could be what you're looking for. Packs nice. Smokes a little warm. Don't pack it too tight - you won't get any more flavor out of it that way.

This one smells very nice in the tin, sometimes has a sweet and nutty taste which I like, and rome note is good !

But despite my best efforts to puff as slow as possible and find a way to get the best of it, Scottish Mixture bites the tongue and smokes hot. A few weeks later, thing have gotten worse : the topping is now, well, weird, while the smoke is still hot and harsh.

I will not finish the tin, and of course will never buy another tin. This is a disappointement. It seems to work for some people though...

Agreeable but underwhelming.

I can find little to criticize here. Alas, I can't find much to praise, either.

First, the praise: the aroma, both in the tin and in the fragrant clouds it creates, is very nice indeed.

It is also, however, a bit mild for me, and its casing causes it to overheat a bit quickly.

All in all perfectly pleasant, and utterly unremarkable.

I found the whiskey taste limited, but present, the oriental is a classy touch, but unfortunately it does have a soapy danish style casing taste to it....a shame, perhaps it's coming from the oriental and not flavor enhancers but a bit disappointing from a major tobacco company. Worth a try if you like whiskey blends.

I really like this blend. The smell out of the tin is fantastic, it packs and lights easily, and stays lit. I did not get any tongue bite whatsoever with this blend, and it smokes all the way down to the end of the bowl with a fine grey ash.

One thing I LOVE about it though, is the sweet taste you get mid- bowl. I sip this slow in a church warden, and the flavors really shine when smoked gently. And that sweet taste I talked about earlier is simply fantastic. Nice cool, sweet smoke.

I don't care about the room note as I smoke this to please myself, and it pleases me just fine.

A quite decent blend, I would use this as an all day smoke, nice on the palate, hard to keep lit sometimes, but other than that I really enjoy it. Nice on the palate good flavor, needs a little rubbing out but thats half the fun sometimes. I definitely recommend this to a beginner, due to the fact that it has almost no bite at all, and it doesn't make a mess in your pipe. I think three stars is well deserved.

(Edit June 2, 2016) Its been six years since I've had this blend. I would say that this was my first really good tobacco. It was my first tinned tabac, that's for sure. Anyway, six years later, I am missing this blend...The aroma was so unique and the top notes of "Scotch" combined with all of the other flavor profiles were so singularly...special. Maybe it's nostalgia that makes this blend seem better than it might be, as it reminds me of great times, but I just remember finding such pleasure in this blend.

Wonderful mixture of quality tobaccos, being Virginia and Burley the main components, lightly spiced with Orientals and a definite but mild touch of whiskey. Very little tongue bite, great burning qualities and a mellow taste that's neither sweet nor bitter due to a perfect balance. Scotish mixtures are vaguely defined in the world of pipes, but when I think of this category, Davidoff's is the most representative in my mind.

Although I know some smokers may cringe, I prefer this blend in a corncob and with a Guinness Extra Stout. It claims to have a taist of Scotch, but as a single malt lover, I beg to differ. The flavering is by no means unpleasent, but a far cry from resembling scotch.

The ribbon cut is easy to pack and lite, and doesn't need airing/drying before shuving in and stricking your flint! It burns cool with no bite. I have been smoking this blend out on the lake in windy conditions with no stove cover, and hasn't burned through. You'd think ribbon would burn hotter, but not here.

I've used two tins, but have two more aging in my stash.

I first ran across Davidoff Scottish Mixture on a trip to Dublin in 2001. I did not bring any pipes or tobacco because one of the first items on the list was to go to the Peterson store across from the University and buy a new Peterson. I have always loved their pipes, owned several, and thought it would be a real treat to buy one at the Peterson shop. I had a great time and ended up buying two new Petersons, a Strand and a Deerstalker which is to this day the favorite of my 35 pipes.

The salesman asked if I needed tobacco and I asked what he recommended and without hesitation he pointed out the Davidoff Scottish Mixture and told me that this was his favorite pipe tobacco. Well, since they carried the entire line of Peterson's tobacco and he was recommending this one instead, I figured I would try it. I also knew Davidoff Cigars and find them quite good.

This is my favorite tobacco. It has a very pleasant taste and the best room note ever. It is not an over powering aromatic. Not saccarine sweet nor woodsy. Hard to describe. But even hours and days later, when most room note has degenerated to "ashtray" smell, this one smells just as pleasant. It is the only tobacco I smoke indoors.

I have a seven day rotation of my pipes and dedicate pipes to specific tobaccos. I rotate through a number of different tobaccos which I enjoy. This is the only tobacco with seven dedicated pipes (the seven best of my 15 Peterson's). I smoke it daily.

A mild-medium tobacco, good for anyone who enjoys a blend that has a burley nutty note, some grassy flavor from the Virginia (not much) a slight bisquit flavor, and overall a good blend not overwelled my one flavor or another. Cool burning, no tongue bit, and most of all a smoothness from the blend. I like well balanced flavors in this pipe.

The tin notes are wonderful and fresh. A nice job of balancing 4 tobaccos - Virginia, Dark Fired Kentucky, Burley, Orientals.

This bend has taken a down turn in processing and presentation since I tried it last some years ago. It's been simplified as blended ribbon instead of the previous ready-rubbed cake. The subtle flavor is different also. Before, it had a mild cased sweetness with an undertone of something dark-sweet like carob and chocolate otherwise verging on almost bland. Now, it has a very light smell, something along the lines of dried mango. In fact I think it's the same casing used in Peterson's Whiskey but to a far lessor degree. I didn't notice immediately that flavor coming through in the smoke but it creeps back in after a while. The smoke is a bit rough and definitely not as smooth as it once was. I couldn't make out the individual tobacco components; It's just all blended into a bland irrelevancy. This sort of thing concerns me and is a sign of where the industry is headed: Further consolidation and simplifying blends for cost savings that will end up making inferior products. This blend is not utter rubbish and could be salvaged by blending in some other condimental leaf to give it some character but it's just not worth smoking it on it's own.

Edit: a few more bowls down the line, and I think my original one-star review may have been harsh. I am currently categorising this as a subtle smoke. I find myself drawn to it when I fancy a natural, non-invasive, smooth and mild smoke. It is somewhat interesting however, as various components are balancing themselves on my pallet throughout the bowl.

Original review: Does not really taste of much at all. I am new to Oriental ‘dominant’ blends, or otherwise ‘Scottish’ blends, but I cannot distinguish any pleasing note from this. Maybe all of the components are balanced enough to mask each other out. I have a feeling this is common to Oriental blends.

The flavor, when you can keep this cool, is not bad. Has a little sweet and sour thing going on and a fair amount of earth. The whisky is very mild and taste great. Problem is, I can't keep this cool and it causes the flavors to go all out of whack. If you're one of those who can keep the temp down on this beast you have my undying respect. I like Virginia blends and this one is very mild, with a pinch of pepper. When I opened the tin, I noticed the smell of raisins. It packed easily and stayed lit all the way through. There was plenty of smoke and a noticeable hit of nicotine, but not overbearing. This is one of those blends you can light up and forget about as you go about your day: it's there, but doesn't get in the way. However, before you write this one off, the quality of the tobacco, like all Davidoff tobaccos, is outstanding. I recommend you try this mixture just for the subtleness of the flavor and quality of the tobacco.

I really enjoy my pipe tobaccos that have a bit of spirits topping them so I decided to take a chance and bought a dusty tin from my local B&M. Upon opening one can defiantly tell this was topped with some sort of liquor, had I not known it was whisky I might have guessed rum but in no way was it overpowering. I have smoked enough blends to tell the blend is topped but it is very far from being an aromatic, the usual thin ribbons mixed with chunky Virginia flakes in various browns and black strands, at a perfect moisture to pack right from the tin. This is a tasty mix that reminds me of the best blends from Macbaren, Navy Mixture and Plumcake but without the bite. Not the best of the genre but I really enjoyed smoking a cob in the car on the way to work this week, after work the other half of the bowl made for a nice DGT ride home. Three stars!

I feel i can't do this tobacco review any justice unless i list out the pros and cons, it is just such a weird blend for me that I do not even know where to start

Pros: little to no maintenance, once I had gotten it lit that was pretty much all it needed, the flavor was not so bad a little strong and overbearing at times to me but then again I am kind of new to blends of this nature, cleaning the pipe afterward was not as laborious as after some of the other blends I have tried.

Cons: I got the dreaded pipe gurgle at some points, although, this could be attributed to my lack of experience again, my biggest peeve with this blend is that it lost a good portion of flavor towards the end of my bowl, it also smoked quite hot and times.

In summation I will finish the tin, but will not purchase this blend again.

This one started like an old car that had been sitting out in the garage for several months -- with a sputter, a stall, and then...a smooth ride on a fine country road once I found the right pipe/technique. Not overly moist in the tin, in fact my first tin here is very restrained in it's use of humectants (though they seem to be in there).

Experimented in different pipes but never got the tongue bite others have mentioned, but then I'm not a hard puffer. I believe pipe baccy is to be sipped and savored, not cooked and burned down faster than you can say, "heel"! OK, humor is not my strong suit...moving on:

After trying it in a handful of pipes (all tries pleasant but unremarkable) I found the magic combo: my new Brigham 4-dot rusticated bent, with the Scottish Mixture gently rubbed out--this was the final touch needed for a really smooth, pleasant smoke. Try the rubbing-out; it really opens up the flavor of this blend while helping keep a bowlful lit easily (not a problem in any case but a performance improvement).

It's not exceptionally rich or complex (I'm mainly a non-aromatic smoker, leaning toward unflavored VA flake and Oriental mostly). It's just a pleasant, easygoing and pleasant smelling smoke (so I'm told), good for a backyard party or a hike in the woods with friends without a single complaint or sneer from anyone, but rather quite a few compliments about the aroma.

The flavor doesn't evolve or develop much from match to dottle but that's ok with me; I was looking for a pleasant spring/summer smoke primarily, meant to be enjoyable for others around me as well, with summer socializing in mind. My man at De La Concha in New York steered me toward this with those criteria in mind and he didn't disappoint. More tins to be stocked.

I'm afraid I'm not terribly excited over this blend. Davidoff has some really good blends, so I had high hopes for this one when I opened the tin. The tin aroma is awesome, but smoking it is another matter. I hate to say it, but it really is bland, and hot burning. Now, it's not totally hopeless. Its whisky casing does lend it a malty taste, and it can be quite sweet and round. But it does burn terribly hot, and in the end requires too much nursing for it to be worth the effort.

It might be a pipe issue, so I'll probably try it in different pipes now and then and adjust the rating if necessary, but for now it lands on "somewhat recommended".

Someone said it's similar to Mac Baren's Scottish Mixture, I have to disagree on that, to my tastes they are nothing alike. But maybe that's just me.

This mixture was given to me as a gift, non-tinned. It was of the precise moisture to dryness tobacco that I have tried. Usually blends are a little on the moist side for me, not this one perfect.

Strength: To my tastes this is up there in medium range of nicotine strength. You can really tell this one is going to give you a little more than others.

Flavoring: Now I tried this blend and noticed something unique about it. It wasn't until I read the description on here that it contained rare scotch whiskey...BAM...that is what I tasted oddly enough. BTW, goes great with Scottish Whiskey.

Room Note: Rather nice for me.

Taste: Taste was somewhat ashy at the initial 5 min mark, but is excellent during relights.

This Scottish Mixture by Davidoff has been on the market for some time because I first bought it 30 years ago. I remember it then said on the tin: "Made in Holland"(where I live as well) so it could have been made by Niemeyer. Who produces it now I cannot tell. The mixture is about the same as then (although all tobacco's were rather better in the old days) with the same whisky and chocolate/coffee notes, and very tasty for that matter. Indeed, the cut does resemble Plumcake but from there on, the two are worlds apart. This is much smoother on the palate and burns rather better, whereas Plumcake is a biter if you're not careful. I do recommend this fine mixture to lovers of a quality aromatic. Rob.

UPDATE: NOV15 2007 I did imply that I will give an update - so here it is.

I find myself reaching more and more often for this. I cannot say that I always have the luxury of truly relaxing while I smoke this - bit it is OK.

I also notice that people around me do not seem to complain all that much about it - it is not really discreet but the scent has a certain agreeable quality.

Overall, I like it. Perhaps not as much as some other blends but I do. I will buy it again - if I come across it - but I will not go looking for it...

INITIAL: OCT31 2007 Well, I am just smoking my first bowl.

The open tin smell does remind me of McB Plumcake. The tobaco itself, Texture-wise also reminds me of McB Plumcake.

It did pack quite well and it took to light immediately.

Right now, I am holding the pipe in my hand and I am taking gentle puffs withdrawing the pipe as I am savoring the taste in my mouth. This way, it is quite good. But if you just keep holding the pipe with your mouth throughout the process, when your hands are "tied up", then it is too light and all complexity is lost.

This should be good for breath smoking. I think it can make a very good companion for moments of relaxation. I just think that it tends to burn hot - if not puffed really gently - and this makes it hard to really enjoy.

One might say it is somewhat like an aromatic that Mac Baren might produce, but it doesn't burn hot or bite to the degree of a Mac Baren aromatic. Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend is somewhat like this one, but that's a stretch.

The room note is quite pleasant. If you're an aromatic smoker looking for something different, you might want to give this one-of-a-kinder a try.

Something must be wrong here. For you see, I seem to be smoking something quite different from the tobacco others have reviewed here, or even the one described on the tin this came in. I detect no Orientals and perhaps only a hint of Burley. The majority of the stuff seems to be made up of bright Virginia in a broken flake form.

What really astounds me is how anybody could say that this tobacco has anything, in the least, to do with whiskey, with the exception of what is printed on the tin. If one must make comparison between this leaf and some sort of potable, I would have to hearken back the sorts of punch that were drunk by the likes of Dr. Johnson, with their citrus undertones with the overall essence of perfumes and flowers. To me every shred of this tobacco seems an attempt by a Continental concern to produce the sort of Virginia based aromatic of the English Lakeland tradition. I happen to like such mixtures and, as a result, found Scottish Mixture to be quite palatable. Not at all Scottish, though, and certainly not in the way of whiskey.

Regards,

A. Morley Jaques

Typical davidoff presentation of quality tobacco, ribbon cut. I recently tried Mac Baren Plumcake, which has rum in it ? this one is supposed to have whisky in it, and now I understand more what the liquor does to a tobacco. The two are somewhat similar in taste and aroma. It tastes good, but I can?t have it too often (you can?t eat mussels or rabbit, or liver everyday, twice, three times a year is enough ? but it IS very tasy). My wife REALY likes this one and wonders why I don?t smoke it more often. All in all more like a Danish cavendish with a touch of whisky than a real Scottish mixture, but a good change of pace anyway.

I have always respected Davidoff: for their fine cigars, and for their cigarettes. When I used to smoke cigarettes, theirs were the best. As a consequence, I couldn't help trying this pipe tobacco, the only blend in their line which is imported in Italy. Well, I would have hoped something better from this roughly-cut, scotch whiskey-flavored cavendish/burley... The tin aroma is overwhelmingly sweet, but the smoke isn't much: it is almost pungent, spicy, despite the only average strength. I like it moderately, but the main problem is that I grow quickly tired of it. Sometimes I don't even finish the bowl, also because it tends to burn a bit wet and bite slightly. The room aroma, despite the sweetness of the tin smell, is pungent, too, and not very pleasant to some. An average tobacco, rather nice if smoked slowly, but without the necessary appeal to make it enter in my "always to have at home" group.

UPDATE: Ten years later from my original review (and much more experience in pipe smoking), I have revisited this blend. It's cut thinner now than I remembered. And it's not a bad blend at all. Still tends to burn a bit hot, but no evident bite: actually a nice smooth tobacco. Not the most exciting one, but think Mac Baren Mixture with a little bit less sweetness and more nuttiness. Delicate and pleasant. Almost tempted to give it three stars!

Good quality tobacco, cased with Scotch whiskey. If you appreciate an aromatic smoke, this one is for you. It is similar to other whiskey cased mixtures (e.g., Radford?s Old Scotch), but perhaps with a little more body and depth. The tin aroma is too heavy for my taste, but my SLW finds it agreeable. It is easy to pack, but not that easy to light. I think there is PG in this one, as the first puffs tickle my nostrils and produce an astringent effect in the throat. It does not burn cool. The flavour is alright, in that it does taste of tobacco, but eventually the casing overpowers the taste and settles in the pipe (NB: if you don?t want your briar to taste of sweet Scotch for weeks, don?t try it!). All in all, this mixture is closer to Irish coffee than it is to tobacco or Scotch whisky. Not bad if you like a sweet, aromatic smoke. Personally, I would rather drink Scotch than smoke it.

A very quick burning tobacco, although this might have to do with the fact that the particular product had been preserved for at least four years in a half full mason jar.

Although not classified as a semi-aromatic I find the flavoring of the mixture to be quite noticeable, something that is not uncommon in Davidoff pipe tobaccos. It obscures the pureness of the tobaccos and paradoxically even of the added tastes themselves. The mixture does not easily cause tonguebite though and if one desires more added flavour, this will be a good buy. I notice predominantly the burley with some hint of whisky and not so much the virginas, kentucky and latakia.

Tin note of moderately pungent, earthy sour vegetation. Tobacco is a Ready Rubbed of brown, dark brown and light brown. Moisture content is great, larger pieces may need a little rubbing. Burns moderately with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild to medium. Flavoring is very mild, with notes of Scotch whisky. Mild whisky taste on initial light and falls to the background soon after. Taste is medium and moderately consistent, with notes of mild whisky, peaty vegetation, toast, herbal floral, nutty, zesty lemon grass, spices, savory, tart sour citrus, earth, molasses, bitter orange peel, acidic, a wood and tangy dark fruit background note, and a peppery retro. Burley and Kentucky seem to by swapping the lead with Oriental/Turkish and Virginia supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
