In the deep, dark, middle of the night, you stroll along a narrow country path. A cloud of fragrant smoke from your favorite pipe trails behind you. You have ventured out to taste the flavor of the night, examine the shadows, the starlight, to savor the moonglow. You smoke Nocturne, mysterious, intriguing, rich and profoundly flavorful. It is a very good night.

A dead-ringer for the more recent release, I finally finished these two tins and the differences are minimal. This too was overly moist in the tin, which lends some credence to my theory that if you want you tobacco at the same moisture level in 20 years, avoid flat tins and go with these taller ones. This needed drying time as well.

As with the recent release, this had a tin note of smoke and tang. The smoke was slightly less apparent and, of course, that could be my mind playing tricks. The latakia was slightly more subdued, making this one more dark Virginia and figs with less creamed coffee and spice. The orientals seemed a touch more prominent and juicier. Complexity was well apparent but not overbearing and I was able to focus on other things when I chose. Again, not enough strength and boldness to make this a rotation maker but if you can find a tin for a reasonable price, go for it. Then again, save some money and go with the more recent vintage, as the differences are minor and you can always age this one.

Very rare stuff and many thanks to a fellow reviewer who sent me a couple of ounces to smoke. I absolutely loved it. Admittedly, the tobacco had ripened for 20 years and that mellowed the Latakia to the point where it played very softly in the background. The Oriental and Virginia leaf had become as smooth and tasty as any combination I've ever tried. Huge in the flavor department and perfect as an evening smoke just before retiring for the night.
