Ennoble with the aromas of coffee and a little chocolate, this pipe tobacco is very aroma-rich, but mellow in the smoke. Ripe Virginia tobaccos are composed with an addition of black cavendish according to an old recipe of the company.
The grassy, citrusy, lightly dark fruity, earthy Virginias are the lead component. The mildly sugary black cavendish is mostly a secondary player. The coffee topping has a light richness while the chocolate tends to be in the background. A very light caramel essence underscores the experience. The toppings sublimate the tobaccos to a moderate extent. The strength is a couple of steps past the mild level, while the taste is just past the center of mild to medium. The nic-hit is very mild. The tobacco is light on moisture, burns clean and a little warm at a reasonable rate, and can bite a fast puffer, so I recommend a sipping pace. The flavor is very consistent all the way to the end. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires few relights. Has a decent after taste. An all day smoke that gets three stars for taste, but two overall for the bite potential.
This is one of the best Larsens you can get. The words mellow in the smoke are very precise when you describe the feeling. It has a very discrete coffee taste with a touch of a chocolate. If smoked slowly towards the end you get a taste of a fine malt scotch. Very nice, highly recommended and one of my daily blends.
This one comes a bit on the dry side, but burns and tastes well without remoistering. Packs, lights and burns easily. The coffee aroma is distinct but you can still taste the Va's and a bit of the Cavendish which is added with a very light hand here. There are also slight notes of caramel. This is a good tobacco for warmer days and for when you don't want to spare too many thoughts on the weed in your bowl. Pleasant, but plain, in a good way! Unlike with so many other aromatics (and many Larsens, for that matter) tongue bite isn't really an issue here. If smoked like a pipe should be smoked anyway, it won't bite. If puffed too hard, tongue bite will occur, but rather moderately. It burns pretty dry which is good for the pipe and the overall smoking experience but be sure to have something to drink nearby cause it can dry out the throat a little.
Solid three stars for good craftmanship and enjoyable product.
