I get a little toast and nut flavor from the earthy, woody burley, but a lot of it is covered up by the toppings. The Frangelico has an essence of hazelnut that I barely notice, though the Irish creme is more obvious. I see a little black cavendish in here, but it must be unsweetened because I'm only getting brown sugar from it. The strength and nic-hit levels are mild. The taste is in the center of mild to medium. It's a little moist, and may need a slight dry time, but it burns cool and clean at a moderate rate with a mostly consistent, if fairly routine taste. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and requires a few relights. Won't bite or get harsh. The pleasant after taste and room note are weak. It's pleasant enough for a work day smoke.

I've smoked a few Hazlenut flavored tobaccos before but the extract version only. This was my first (and probably last) foray into the world of Frangelico flavored leaf. The nutty alcoholic essence (thus the name, maybe?) just didn't do anything for me or the Burley within. Kind of a downer... Oh well.

A good aromatic with an irish mist topping. This is a pretty good blend as aromatics go and this is what I would expect from C & D, who is known for high quality burley leaf and not using PG in their products. So for this fact alone I will give it three aromatic stars.

What is keeping me from awarding a fourth star is two fold. The first would be that I seldom looked forward to a bowl of this and used it mainly as a way for me to enjoy a smoke while putting off a pleasant room aroma. But the second, and more important reason, is my discovery of CAO's Eileen's Dream. It is a similar based blend with the same type of topping that I really enjoy. So much so, that Upon opening a tin of the latter, I gave the rest of my Nutty Irishman away. There wasn't too much left.

Tin note: Hazelnut (C&D call it Frangelico, but what it amounts to is hazelnut in other words; that is what Frangelico tastes like. They also mention whiskey -- Irish Mist specifically -- but for whatever reason I always have trouble discerning a whiskey flavour in any blend. To me it just comes across as a slight sweetness.)

Taste: Hazelnut, hazelnut -- and, oh, did I mention hazelnut?

If I were to put this in a nutshell it would be this: If you like hazelnut flavoured coffees, chances are pretty high you are going to like this. If you don't, you probably won't like it.

It's actually a pretty good blend. I don't have many aromatics I'd consider cellaring -- Lane 1 Q and Cult Blood Red Moon have been the only two I'd consider doing that with so far (and I haven't yet) -- but this one I would and plan to do just that.

I smoked it on a cool summer evening and it was great. I could also see it being a nice autumn or winter's evening smoke. It could even be considered a Christmas smoke.

I think this one will probably become my top aromatic for when I want a change from my norm. Something about the flavour of nuts, like dark fruit, just seems to work really well with tobacco. Cult Blood Red Moon can get a bit ashy toward the bottom, but I didn't find this with Nutty Irishman. Nutty Irishman too has a more distinctive flavour than Lane 1 Q (though I think Lane 1 Q still wins the room note war) and that is more often than not what I want when I decide to pick up an aro instead of my usual picks like Old Dark Fired, Aperitif, Brown Sugar Flake, Cut Virginia Plug or Frog Morton's Cellar; i want a dessert blend at that point.

Definitely worth trying and definitely worth tossing some tins in the cellar. I doubt it will age any better mind you, but just to have some around in case it disappears off the market.

I was pleasantly surprised by this blend. It smelled great in the can..noting nuts and sweetness. When I smoked it tho...it wasnt at all what I expected. Maybe my tastebuds are different but to me Nutty Irishman was like smoking the equivalent of a spiked holiday eggnog...and I liked it. This is going to be a brand I will smoke again.

So far I'm really enjoying this blend. Creamy and smooth, with a touch of nuttiness, perhaps hazelnut, that comes through occasionally. Not overpowering, and definitely a good blend for a novice piper or aromatic fans.

The bag-note is most delicious to me, wow! Very rich and quite complex aroma of candied/caramelized hazelnuts in the forefront greeting you 'Come in, have a seat, a pipe and a drink!'. You clearly get some of the honey from the Irish Mist, as well as a very mild boozy undertone and - what I find very interesting - a somewhat herbal quality in the back! I was stoked by now..

In the smoke it revealed itself as something I wouldn't have expected this blend to be! I was expecting a strongly flavored aromatic to be quite honest.. and - albeit the flavoring clearly dominating the tobaccos - the flavoring itself is very unobtrusive and "smooth on the palate". A potpourri of aromas, of which none ever takes the main stage!

There's the wonderful note of candied hazelnuts, a very pleasant, buttery creaminess, that's harmonizing and interacting wonderfully with the distinctive herbal qualities of the blend. It's less sweet than the scent would suggest, as you'll also find these tart, herbal and spicy notes in perfect balance with the sweet notes. The burley drops in with its nutty, oaty, and earthy qualities, as well as he adds a 'toasty' character to the smoke. A mildly boozy undertone is everpresent and very unobtrusive, as well as natural feeling!

Quite a surprise, but I really like this blend and I consider buying a tin or two when I get the chance to next time! ;-) Nutty, herbal, spicy, creamy.. a lot of things going on (don't expect an overly complex blend though, yet there's a lot to find, if you look for it!)

Cornell & Diehl - Nutty Irishman.

Note: from bulk.

A blend comprised of mainly medium brown ribbons, with a smaller proportion of darker ones. My moisture's good, but as this was a bulk purchase I can't comment on a tin's.

Subjectively speaking, the toppings don't work well together for me. The Irish Mist would be better without the Frangelico: the creamy, decadent, flavour of the Mist is contested by the caustic Frangelico. It's a shame there's not more black Cavendish, this might smooth it out some, but seeing as I can't taste any, it doesn't. The Burley tastes good-enough, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: pleasant.

It wouldn't be fair to rate this with just one star, but it's certainly getting no more than two:

Somewhat recommended.

I never did like Irish Mist so when a guy in our group shared a little of this I had my doubts. Smelled like Irish Mist and nuts right out of the bag. Light up gave me plenty of that Irish Mist flavor along with some nuts. You know while I did not care that much for the overall taste it was a rather pleasing smoke. I can see if someone drinks Irish Mist they would love this blend and the nutty background is nice. To me not in my rotation but it was a nice smoke.

I'm a NASPC member and work a shift on the front table at our annual show. People give us items to raffle-off and lots of them are tins of tobacco. This year, in addition to the many unopened tins we received, were four tins that were opened and half full. We winnowed them out and, at the end of the show, another member and I split them. Nutty Irishman was one that I took and smoking it has led to this review. I liked this blend as soon as I sniffed it and smoked it. The tin aroma is somewhat akin to sniffing hazelnut coffee beans, in addition to traditional tobacco aromas. Smoking this blend was an interesting experience. The tin aroma did not translate to the smoking aroma at all (that I could perceive) and the first bowl broke down into a sequence of experiences. The top fourth of the bowl was devoted completely to burning off the practically unnoticeable toppings and allowing the Virginia components to run in front of the burley. At about the third bowl mark things mutated into a wonderful smoke of burley and black Cavendish tastes that was four star material on it's own. Unfortunately, this all unraveled somewhere in the bottom third of the smoke. I can echo the sentiments of reviewer Ivycap 2010-09-11 in that I thought that this blend became tasteless, ashy and hot in the bottom third. So, smoking it puts the taste and aroma of your smoke all over the place. Still, I can recommend it - three stars.

The blend smells nutty, a bit like a syrup for flavoring coffee.

The burley is nutty, and the hazelnut flavoring makes this taste even nuttier. The specific hazelnut flavor is very prevalent on the retrohale, while the smoke has more of a general nuttiness with normal breathing/puffing. I'm not a hazelnut fan so I found the flavor far too strong to enjoy much.

Overall I would rate this as a delicious and decent quality aromatic. The tin note is wonderful and translates to the smoke well. I mainly get hazelnut above all and don't really notice the Irish Mist. I don't notice really any cavendish, and seems mainly thin ribbon shag-cut Virginias and Burley. The moisture content when I opened the 2oz peanut tin was just fine to smoke. Upon lighting you get full hazelnut flavor and a decently light tobacco. Later in the bowl I do start to get a bit of a chemical taste.. similar to the chemical taste I feel I get when smoking Molto Dolce... though not nearly as bad as that. The room note is really great and my wife fully approves. I would give it more stars if it didn't have this chemical note toward the bottom half of the bowl.. though I will most likely not buy more.

A very boring tobacco that gives off a sweet scent pre-light. As soon as it is lit the sweetness is revealed to be but a scent, not a taste. The nuttyness it's named after is nowhere to be found, it's all a dull taste of ash that is quite unpleasant. Never again.

Tried a 2 oz tin - before I knew it, it was gone! Good tin aroma, nice room note. Smokes cool in my briar if you let it burn slowly. If you're a fast puffer, then it can get hot and lose some of the taste. Needs to dry a little after opening about a week or so. I just bought another 2 tins - opened one today and will start using it next week.

I read the description of this blend and wanted to like it. I love Frangelico in a brandy snifter, so thought Nutty Irishman should be a wonderful aromatic.

I bought 2oz and thought it smelled wonderful in the bag. It seemed like a cross between Frangelico (hazelnut liquor) and Bailey's Irish Creme. I loaded a bowl and at first light thought it had a chemical taste. I hoped if I smoked the bowl down, it might get better, but it did not.

I've also had experiences where a second bowl is sometimes better than the first. I filled and lit another a few days later and NOPE! It was still funky and had a chemical taste. I didn't taste hazelnut, irish mist or anything else for that matter. It was just bad, and I'm sad to say it.

I love aro's and about half of my regular rotation is comprised of them. Nutty Irishman will not be a keeper for me. I don't even plan to finish my 2 oz bag.

I purchased 2 bulk ounces of Nutty Irishman from a local tobacconist. The pouch note is very sweet and smells of artificial hazelnut, overripe banana, white chocolate, and booze. Upon initial light, the taste and aroma are sweet and mildly nutty. The burley is woody and creamy, but overall has little character otherwise. The black cavendish offers a thin-tasting, metallic sweetness that could also be attributed to the heavy, artificial topping. At the bottom two thirds of the bowl, an ashy, peppery taste is prevalent. The ribbon cut was a bit moist for optimal smoking and gave me tongue-bite. After drying, it smoked much cooler and took less effort to keep lit. Nicotine strength is very mild and could be puffed on an empty stomach or all day long. Could be used as a blender, as the topping could easily suppress other less-than-desirable tobaccos, but not recommended otherwise.

A light, relaxing, comforting smoke. Not very interesting or overly complicated. Not overly sweet or cloying in anyway. Named after the classic drink which this tries to mime pretty successfully. If you’re expecting more hazelnut and less alcohol, you might want to curb those expectations a bit as this is trying to accurately copy the drink.

Has a pleasant aroma and mouth feel with a bit of a soft creaminess to it that gets cut through by the occasional hint of whiskey. The hazelnut is pretty subtle but not unnoticeable. There’s an occasional hint of toasted nuttiness thats very pleasant.

Nothing about the blend is very extreme and it’s quite well rounded. It’s a bit wet and doesn’t fully dry for me, but it doesn’t get too hot if smoked at a moderately slow pace. If you push it too hard the alcohol will become more noticeable and start to bite. You won’t have to baby it and it doesn’t need too many relights. Very mild with not much nicotine. Not very full flavored but nice and subtle.

Not great, not terrible. Probably dead center for me. More of a 2.5 than a 2. Try it out and see how it fairs for you, as this one seems to be all over the place as far as reviews go.

No nicotine, no bite , no gurgle. Similar in taste to Erin Go Bragh in a pouch, which is Irish Whiskey flavored. Room note is OK, my truck had a nice smell when I got back in, not fabulous, but certainly acceptable. Didn't get any of the hazelnut flavor, I wouldn't reorder. Moisture content about perfect.

An aromatic that isn't over the top, has a pleasant flavor and burns well. The nuttiness of the Burley comes through the subtle flavorings of Irish Mist and Frangelica. It's a tobacco that isn't overly complex and that could be an all day smoke. No tongue bite and burns clean and without goop. Overall a decent blend.

This is an excellent smelling tobacco in the jar and the room note is extremely pleasant, if you like hazelnut. I wanted to like this from the start, but it took a lot of fiddling with my technique and equipment to get it just right. I would get an fantastic flavor filled puff or two on the front end and it would quickly start to taste ashy, slowed my cadence to no effect. Last night I decided to try it with a filter and the results were great. The Irish cream and hazelnut were came through well from the top of the bowl to the bottom effortlessly. As a caveat, I am new again to pipe smoking, after a long (15 year) inexcusable and unacceptable absence.

What a treat! Upon cracking open the tin I noted the frangelico and Irish mist right off the bat. First bowl was delicious mild smoke, about half way I notice I needed to slow down just a bit. The "one who loves me" loves both frangelico and Irish Mist and therefore has given "the nod" of tin & room note approval. This, for now, has become my #2 go to blend.

Nutty Irishman has a delicious tin aroma that's not that far off from their newest Mixture Monster Blend in that it has a Toffee, Cream aroma. Taste is the same without a bite which is extraordinary for an aromatic that is this moist and delicious smelling, Recommended for aromatic Cavendish smokers, you guys will really appreciate C&D's use of fine leaf and top shelf toppings.

Taste like Butterbeer for any universal fans out there. A nice warm butterscotch from the charing light till about half way. The nuttiness really comes through at the bottom. Great smoke on a cold night

This is a review of the Bulk version. I have heard that the tin is different from the bulk. The pouch note is sweet and woodsy. The moisture level was fine and there is a dark chocolate kind of tone to it. Admittedly, I have had nither Irish Mist nor Frangelico. The taste, to me, is that of honey and wood. Almost all blends that pass themselves of as nutty seem to be more wood-like. The Cavendish balances things out without turning this into another Black Cavendish blend. It lights well and stays lit. The taste is the same until you reach the last third of he smoke. The sweetness takes a back seat and the Burley comes forward. There is plenty of smoke and the nicotine level is low. The wife says she smells something like cigarettes in it, but she will tolerate it well enough. The ash is fine This will not ghost your pipe and there is really no after-taste. I would recommend this tobacco to someone who has only smoked aromatics and wants to transition slowly. I think it is to flavored to win the approval of an English or pure Virginia smoker. Finally, the last third of the bowl does pair well with coffee.

I normally don't smoke aromatics, but an employee at my local tobacco shop said this was one of his favorite blends so I thought I'd give it a try. Very nice tin note reminiscent of hazlenut-flavored coffee. This flavor also comes out while smoking, but wasn't overwhelming. Especially toward the bottom of the bowl I could taste the burley as well. Very pleasant room note. Goes fine with coffee in the morning, but I likely wouldn't purchase it again. It's fine, but rather run of the mill and nothing to write home about.

Beautiful tin aroma. One of the few aros that can taste as good as it smells. Has a nice sweet almond-like taste and aroma. If you've ever smelled almond scented lotion it is kind of like that. Very alluring. It does kind of muddy and become ashy toword the end of the smoke. It burns a little hot as well.

This is the bulk offering. It smells like frangelico, boozy irish liqueur and coffee, oh boy! The taste, however, is wholly unremarkable, oh no! A basic or typical cavendish forward aromatic. There's some hazelnut, grass, nuts, a slight booziness. It's smooth and creamy, kind of tastes like Baileys at times. It'll get harsh/sour if puffed fast, but even with a slow cadance it has a bitter finish and I find the aftertaste routinely unpleasant. There is no chance of bite, which is nice. The tin-note is superb, the room-note is great, I have received several compliments from the dissidents around me. It has everything going for it, except a desirable flavour profile. I like it more than I don't, love it less than I'd like. 2 stars.

This is not a top tier aromatic, but it is an incredibly solid choice. Smooth as silk straight out of the tin, and no chance of tongue bite. This is easily an all day smoke. It is unimposing with a gentle nutty flavour that persists to the bottom of the bowl with the help of burley. As someone who loves to puff all day, I enjoy having a jar of this around between stronger blends. There are more complicated and flavourful aromatics, but this one does the trick if you like nutty flavours that aren't overly sweet.

I am tempted to generously give this a higher rating, based on my personal taste. This wins me over because I don't have much of a sweet tooth. I love the hazelnut/burley forward taste. However, there are aromatics in a different league than this.

Final Verdict: 3/4 this is a great workhorse tobacco.

Nutty Irishman extends a welcoming appearance of about a 50/50 mix between Black Cavendish and assorted Burley. This Frangelico/Irish Mist plastered tobacco displays as a finely cut ensemble of handsome ribbon, showing shades of true black and variegated browned tones, made for a rather appealing looking specimen. There is a bit of held moisture but nothing too concerning when all was said and done.

Although I never personally had a Nutty Irishman cocktail, I must imagine that the pouch nose emulates the famed drink reasonably well. Genuinely the aroma endows a very nutty vanilla tempered sweetness, some fashionable creamy liqueur resonance, and a delightful chase of inviting alcohol. A rich invigorating mellowness vibrated through my internals as I really savored this attractive essence.

With the flavor, a sweet toasty hazel fashions the elemental makeup for the stylishness of the blend, very pleasing. Coming in predominately and pronounced like Nutella less the chocolate, it finishes smoothly with a slight buttery down to earth tone. I further recorded what seemed like the weak vanilla influence. This lent a quiet impression of a candied nut with perceivably a dash of dull raw cinnamon like spice.

Obliging high notes are formed by witness of the Frangelico liqueur which offers some very passive malty caramel-honey subtleties. This tends to combine in general with the discreet zest kicked up by the latent alcohol content. At times, however, the Irish Mist does send a clear shot through but for the most part it rides peacefully in the backdrop modeling a bit of distinctive clove. There is also an occasional floral impersonation that moves forward from the middle band that projects some piney complements adding an interesting variation to the melded top-coat characterization.

The toppings do most certainly dominate the smoking excursion, yet the Burley base does primarily bring a sweet karo-like woodiness tailed with lowly sour tinges. There is also an additional mocking of natural rounded nuttiness to a lesser degree. For the most part the Cavendish lies dormant within the spectrum of flavor as I was largely unable to register its influence, only offering tracings of a basic earthy quality.

Overall, I wouldn’t necessarily say that Nutty Irishman’s flavor is one dimensional, but it is narrowly focused being heavily orchestrated by the hazelnut note and spirited spice. This is not necessarily in determinant to the blend’s merit but merely underscores the fact this recipe is a rather simple taste affair.

I found that this mild to medium sweet spiced nutty profile was generally enjoyable the first half of the bowl. However, it seemed like at the half-way point the bottom kind of dropped out. Namely the additives fell off abruptly leaving just a kind of basic earthy Cavendish ho-hummed taste. What is more, I did sense a newfound roughness in the smoke’s texture at that juncture, prior to the blend tendered rather smoothy in all fairness.

In acknowledgment of the latter concern, nevertheless, mechanically Nutty Irishman scored well truth be known. The tobaccos burnt exceptionally cool and with an even metered pace most likely due to the condition of the cut. The exhausted plumes of smoke were standardly hearty, and the ensuing room note, being a dulled nut-oriented earthen woody spice, proved to be very moderate and unassuming in nature.

For the most part, the texture tended to be creamy and well balanced giving the feel of the smoking experience a genuine savor and relaxed mantra. Additionally, I did find that the blend largely possesses good body with respect to standard constitution and density. It presented absolutely no discomfort regarding palate lashing and nicotine agitation.

A few final edifying comments, nonetheless. Mainly, this is one of those aromatics that should be purchased in smaller volume unless you intend to smoke it profusely or at least jar it. When I first received the mixture, I tried a few sample bowls. Admittedly the pleasing tastiness of the blend really caught my attention. As circumstance would have it, I shelved the sample bag for a few weeks. With that I found that the initial flavor intensity had significantly diminished, and the pouch air took on some realized degrading funk. Drink it up, smoke it up, or dump it in a Mason to preserve its ideal condition, bottom-line. 2.5 to 2.6-ish pipes. . .
