This is an excellent blend. Nothing to compare with Cellini's stuff which I don't like. The tuscany wine is an invention, however the Da Vinci by Dan is simply a great smoke. If you like aromatics such as Blue Note, Sweet vanilla, Autumn Evening, WO Larsen Vintage etc. (all of them first class aromatics, to me) you simply cannot miss the Da Vinci. After many tins, I always find myself amazed by how good the aroma and smell of this blend is. It is well balanced, and it deserves 5 stars with no reserve. Aromatics are like cakes: there's not a "best" one, however you should know the best of all kind, and refuse second choice blends. This is first quality, and it is a bit expensive unfortunately.

The black cavendish offers some sugar, and is a little more noticeable than the mild grass, citrus, dark fruit, and earth from the Virginias. The lightly sweet and more tart Tuscan red wine topping sublimates the tobaccos quite a bit. I figure the light undercurrent of vanilla and caramel comes from toppings as they obviously don’t come from tobaccos. The taste level is a little closer to mild than it is to medium. The nicotine content is light. Won’t bite or get harsh. Burns fairly cool at a slightly slow pace with a mostly consistent flavor, though it’s not quite as sweet as expected. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and needs a few relights. Has a decent, short lived after taste. Can be an all day smoke. More of a two and a half star production.

One of the few aromatics that you can actually taste. Whether the taste is wine or not is debatable but the pouch smell is superb and the smoke flavor on the tongue pairs nicely. Indeed everyone nearby appreciates the smell, but even so, the one with the pipe gets the true experience. Very unique blend and flavor worth trying at least once to see how you like it.

Currently smoking Da Vinci from 2012, when I received this sample it was still perfectly moist in excellent jarred condition. I've let it dry pretty well sitting in a bag, but the flavors are still as they were fresh from a jar. A very smooth and sweet VA/black Cavendish mixture with a very hard to pinpoint flavoring. I mostly seem to get a sweetened black Cavendish vanilla like flavor, little bit of something like a caramelized sugar or toasted marshmellow all throughout. I don't get any sort of wine flavor at all. I've smoked about 8 bowls of this blend, and it's a solid aromatic. Dan Tobacco really know their aromatics. These types of blends are not my preferred style, but any black Cavendish sweetened aromatic smoker should thoroughly enjoy this blend. It steps it up a notch in smoothness and a curious flavoring, I'd say better than American Cavendish aromatics.

Dan Tobacco - Da Vinci.

In the tin: good hydration, mostly dark brown, the ribbons are medium in size. The aroma from it's slightly sweet, fragrant, and sharp; wine.

The smoke? I can't say I'm much of a fan! The tobaccos are nice but the wine ruins it; for me. I get a 'relaxed' character from the sweet black Cavendish and rich Virginias, they taste quite sumptuous together. But sadly the Tuscan wine/Chianti, has far too much sapidity and bitterness to it. In all fairness, a DGT can reduce this quality but I'd rather enjoy a pipe straight away rather than having to wait around! It burns well, without needing much maintenance and doesn't bite.

Nicotine: a little above mild. Room-note: nasty.

Da Vinci? The tobaccos are nice but the topping spoils it. Not recommended:

One star.

Da Vinci gives a sweet and delicious smoke. Among Dan aromatic tobaccos, this is the one I prefer. It is as sweet as other blends, but have a more complex composition.

Tin aroma is wonderful, as well as room note. This is a "social tobacco" that will make non smokers tell that is smells delicious. In the tin the tobacco shows an open range of colors, from cream to black.

Tried several tins on the past years and the recipe is consistant. Aromatic fans wont be dissapointed.

Even with being a primarily VA & English blend smoker, I do like a good aromatic now & then as a change of pace. Many of the aromatics that I have tried just do not cut it as far as flavor, and also are so "goopy" as to burn and smoke too hot even with air drying. Very few can impart good taste, even burn, and quality tobacco. DaVinci is most assuredly one of these rare few.

The blending of VA, Black Cavendish & the light wine topping is simply exquisite and very balanced. This blend is very easy to light and rarely needs a re-light at all. To my palate, the red wine could be defined as a good Italian Chianti. The leaves in this blend are of high quality, with very few stems if ever found at all. The VA & Cavendish marry together quite well, and play off each other imparting a memorable smoking experience.

The room note is excellent, and biting is not a worry at all.

If your tired of sub-par aromatics, I urge you to try DaVinci and experience this quality blend.

This blend is highly recommended to those who enjoy aromatics. The Tuscan wine taste is distinct but not overpowering. The packaging is very cool with the Mona Lisa image. Have received many compliments on the aroma even from militant anti-smokers. This blend is not to be confused with Cornell and Diehl's DaVinci which is a powerful English blend, that packs a pleasant punch when one is in the mood for Latakia.

Dan Tobacco has yet to let me down. I love...well....like McClelland and other aromatic brands but I have yet to find a brand like CAO Dan Tobacco where I can pick up a tin of any of their offerings and be 100% satisfied. I bought this Da Vinci last week and never thought twice of what I might think. Great casing, great flavor.If I could give it 6 out of 5 stars, I would.

I?ll make this short and sweet. DaVinci ought to stick to painting and drawing and keep his Tuscan wine in a glass where it belongs. This is another one of those marketing gimmicks that attempts to be more than it is: a burley concoction with exoticism thrown in the mix. Like most spirit/tobacco marriages, they don?t work. I?ve yet to try a good one, and there?s nothing here to remind me of Tuscany either. This is typical aromatic candy, acrid in taste, waxy on the tongue ala Nat Sherman and a bowl that burns to the touch. There are too many other great things out there to waste your time with this one. Like most CAO products, highly overrated and overpriced.

This is an enjoyable, lightly aromatic tobacco. It smokes cool and dry and possesses a set of fairly deep and rich flavors that don't completely overwhelm the underlying tobaccos.

I picked up a pouch of this last month while on the road and, despite the insanely high price I paid, I've enjoyed the dozen or so bowls I've smoked. The pouch features a ribbon-cut mix of golden and black Cavendish with perhaps a little golden Virginia as well. There were several large sticks in the 50 g pouch, which is about the only negative I can think of. Moisture was perfect from the pouch and I loaded up straight away.

This is supposed to be an aromatic flavored with Tuscan red wine—Chianti Colli Senesi of all things. As others have pointed out, anyone familiar with the red wines of Tuscany (or anywhere else, for that matter) will probably find this to be a load of hokum. Prompted by the pouch text, I suppose I can smell something vaguely wine-like in the aroma. But if it's winey, it's more like the caramel-raisin-vanilla complex of scents that define wines like Malmsey Madeira and Tawny Port. Whatever it is, the aroma is pleasant and has genuine depth and fullness.

The tobacco in the pouch I bought was quite dry and I find it offers a clean, dry smoke, too. I have no idea what the tobacco is like out of the tin. The flavors on the palate are similar to the pouch aromas—dried fruit (raisins and prunes), caramel, a little vanilla. It's also quite a smoky blend for an aromatic, which I like.

Da Vinci is not something I will smoke often, but I do think it is a very good aromatic. The flavors are rich enough and the nicotine is high enough that I always felt satisfied after a bowl.

Wow, this is an amazing blend! In fact, (it may be to early to tell) I think I might like it better than Blue Note!?!? I mostly enjoy non-aromatic blends but if you're like me and you want a change of pace from time to time, or if you're planning on smoking around a crowd but you still want to enjoy the smoke, then hands down this is the blend to turn to. It most certainly is one of the better aromatics out there.

This blend is a wonderful aromatic,this blend is for those who bear a sweet tooth but not sickeningly sweet!I personally would recommend Davinci because it's a delightfully tasty aromatic blend in both taste and smell.My tin doesn't have alot of moisture which was a good sign,it can take 2 lights to get it fully ignited and well puffed... I expected this from a black cavendish.Now the black cavendish is a real treat as well,goes very nice with the chianti I feel there was no need for the virginia as this blend is a very dark and mysterious aromatic.This is definitely a top 10 in the aromatics dept. and for Black Cavendish it's in my top 5.Not recommended for smokers of 'simple' aromatics.

Mild in strength but an elegant blend. The Virginia shines the most and the special processing presents a rather bitter sweet smoke with some nice tartness. Not an everyday sort of blend for me but certainly one with a visit every now and then.

I did not do this start your writing with "Da Vinci Dan Tobacco" , since the same name tobacco products and Cornell & Diehl. One of my friends it was during his visit to Zagreb offered this tobacco and I liked the room note - he was rich, aromatic, but not tiring. Later, I tried another pipe from s friend and I was even better ... No, not no longer, the last time in Graz, I bought a bag of tobacco and kept on the table. I smoked latiakias and so I looked at the bag, and bag me ... Before about a week when I was already fed up of all possible latakias and bald hadeded teachers, I decided, and opened it ... First - the smell, something between bourbon, light Cavendish and something sour, but pleasantly sour ... more on that later. Tobacco magnificently large cut, see a golden Virginia, Burley and Cavendish ... Thus, tobacco smoke is a great, genuine, mature aromatic dessert, but right now that out loud, not too strong aromatic, aromatic, but let's say that goes well with an afternoon tea ... Of course it is in the tobacco and artificial flavors, but very mild and tolerable, so that even the biggest opponents aromatic tobaccos not have to lay pipe after this tobacco. Otherwise it sour note that I previously mentioned, really gives "retrogusto" chianti and this feeling all the time smoking on the palate and tongue with a slight but noticeable aroma of good whiskey. However I doubt that the tobacco served with the Chianti "Colli Senesi" as suggested by the inscription on the bag before it was Denmark alchemy, but very discreet and tasteful ... Otherwise, this tobacco would recommend our offspring Heather (when clean pipe) as an excellent "second echelon tobacco" - after the Original Choice ... Tobacco burns well and developed a great cold smoke ... As a curiosity - our Herr Dreier in Graz selling it as "mein Tobak" in bags of 100 grams for 14 euros, and the original bag of 50 grams is 8 euros. Recommendation - Prepare before smoking another pipe, because you will attract - yet, yet.

Rating - the best among aromatic I smoked the last ten years. For each recommendation ... Only the price - but can not always have everything!

A quality aromatic, without any of the flaws of most aromatic tobaccos I know: this Da Vinci tastes like what it smells and it smells great. Also, smoked with the right cadence, it doesn't attack the tongue. It is highly recommended to smoke from time to time and alternate it with the usual mixtures. It may not be to smoke every day. The brand advertises the flavoring of a Tuscan wine, possibly a Chianti. However, some experts say that it is more similar to the flavor of a hot German wine, with aromas of cloves, cinnamon ...

I give it three and a half stars rounded to three.

Wine flavored tobacco seems intriguing but this blend doesn't really possess an aroma and flavor that I would identify as such. I was expecting tannin notes from a heavy red wine. The open tin smells like the candy Skittles. There is also a slight perfume-lavenderish note underneath that. It smokes very smooth and light with no natural tobacco elements coming through. A very light fruity and gentle sweet taste that fades quickly with that Skittles candy flavor mildly lingering. Just completely misses the mark for me.

Disappointing! This is an ordinary flavored mixture. A classic flavored Black Cavendish with the addition of Tuscan red wine, but unfortunately wine does not make the difference. Essentially this blend does not stand out for its quality, since it is the result of a very risky compromise (flavored black cavendish with red wine). It doesn’t convince me at all. Banal, mediocre, only for aromatic taste’ lovers. In my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 7 and two stars.

This is my favorite aromatic. I just finished my second tin and I have a third one waiting. The smell is classic dried fruits, and the smell translates into the smoke. Very good quality tobacco also. No complaints at all, just compliments.

I opened this tin with some trepidation, as I'm not a big fan of aromatics, however, I can't let tobacco go to waste. Really, I didn't know what to expect as the reviews varied wildly on this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. The tobacco was slightly wet (which is typical of many aro's) and nicely colored, light baccy's, medium baccy's and some dark baccy's. The nose was simply outstanding from the tin, and this carried through after the light. It lit well and poured out gobs of aroma. Let there be no doubt, this is a true aromatic. A good aro. The taste reminded me of a cross between Revelation (the Match I recently puffed) and a black cav, and, something else (what that something else is I couldn't say). I didn't really catch much of the alcohol additive. It did burn hot especially towards the end (I had to spit frequently) and the backwash was a bit acrid, but, other than those two negatives I enjoyed this blend. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser, too. Frankly, this is one of the better aro's I've tried and I heartily recommend it (especially to aro puffers).

Thankfully, I didn't have to pay a dime for this tin. It was mistakenly sent to me by Pipesandcigars.com, and when I notified them of the error, they told me to just keep it since it would not be worth the return postage to send it back. They then sent me the tobacco I had actually ordered, "Devil's Holiday." Kudos to pipesandcigars.com, they have great customer service!

Is anybody else wondering if some of these pipe tobacco manufacturers, when they produce aromatics, are focusing on what the stuff smells like when it burns while virtually completely sacrificing taste? It sure seems that way to me. Another reviewer stated that this could have been flavored paper for all he knew, which I think really hit the nail on the head.

God only knows how many bottles of wine I have consumed in my 47 years, and I detected NONE in this tobacco. There was a hint of vanilla, and that's about all I got out of it.

There is nothing wrong with this tobacco. But in my opinion, there is very little going right with it either.

Da Vinci was the first tin of tobacco I ever bought. The tin aroma was sweet, with the chianti standing out. It packed okay, lit okay and smoked okay, but nothing stood out and grabbed me. So I set it aside and sampled other better and worse tobaccos.

I cam back to this tin, wondering if my slightly more experienced palatte might appreciate it now.

Nope.

It's just as boring as I remember it. No flaws, no virtures, no hits, no runs, no errors. Perhaps my single star rating is a bit harsh. After all, truly bad tobaccos earn their bad ratings. But I honestly can't "somewhat recommend" this tobacco either.

I was doing my laundry and a piece of bubble gum was in the dryer with my sox. It was heated,melted and then tinned by Dan Tobacco,and sold as DaVinci. I hope that expresses my sentiments.

I don't smoke aromatics much, but this is one of the few that I really love. I try to keep some around along with the other aromatics I have found to be of excellent quality-- G.L Pease Barbary Coast, Benjamin Hartwell Evening Stroll, Ashton Original Oldchurch and Butera Sweet Cavendish. I thought that Chianti flavoring sounded unusual and being of Italian descent, I had to try it. Unlike a lot of aromatics, this one burns cool and dry for having so much flavoring. The flavoring definitely dominates the tobacco, but hey, that's usually the reason to smoke an aromatic. With the Chianti flavoring, there's not another aromatic around like it. It has a wonderful bouquet both in the tin and while smoking. I find most aromatics too perfumy, wet and hot. (I'm talking tobacco here guys). When looking for the opposite, I end up with something that is too mild. This blend provides full flavor while remaining dry and cool as with the other aforementioned blends.

I do quick draws (tobacco reviewed with less than 5 bowls smoked) for two reasons: 1. It kicks ass, and while needing a few superlatives to complete a decent review, I have enough of the "gist" to recommend it 2. It sucks so bad, I'd go out on a date with Divine before I subjected another bowl to it. This is a number 2.

Ahem! This tobacco promises "..a sweet mild, pleasant smoke and a fragrant aroma..." and, it's "matured under addition of full-bodied red chianti...". If this is Chianti, it is the Chianti of a fevered 7 year olds imagination. Lilting hints of Grape Nehi, formula 44, and cotton candy, dragged kicking and screaming through a coconut grove, saturated my otherwise unsullied Peter Heeschen sail. For weeks I shall have nightmares of Gigantic Norsemen battering my bedroom walls down to exact a terrible revenge upon me for having raped their countryman's masterpiece. The overall smoke had the finesse of Carrot Top playing Iago from Othello, the complex layering of spandex, and the nuance of a pool cue wielded by Guido the loan shark. Seeking a reprieve for this tobacco, hoping that at a minimum, my wife would endorse the room note, I timidly asked her reaction. Without even taking her eye from her book she opined "..smells like a macaroon from the ninth CIRCLE OF HELL!!"

An interesting blend, the tin-nose is great, akin to Potpourri, which I don't mind in the least although some might object.

The blend is surprisingly dry and somewhat natural. Not your typical N. American style goopy aromatics swimming in Propylene Glycol and sugar. Although there may be some limited PG in the base ingredients.

It packs like an English and combusts like one too, zero gurgle, no relights, combusts quickly but never overly hot on my palate and I was puffing along with cadence.

The flavours are not overly complex; decent but not amazing. Considerably, I do like the fact that it does taste like natural tobacco with a mild to medium Nicotine component. The Virginias are not the best quality and taste more like Burley to me, again decent but not great. However, something does have a very slight Oriental taste to it, perhaps the overlapping blend-ingredients.

The casing (or more likely topping) is not over the top. Tuscan Chianti, well maybe . . . it's there, but I could not tell you what it is in a totally blind tasting.

Overall, worth the price of admission although not something I would pack often maybe once or twice over the snowy winter. Therefore a tin ought to last me quite awhile.

Not cellarable for me.

I received an unopened tin from 2003 in a recent box pass. I picked it out because of the age and the fact that I'm usually a fan of Dan Tobaccos aros.

The seal was still good and it opened with a nice whoosh. The aroma from the tin had lots of wine notes to it still, which I was afraid would have evaporated over the years. The tobacco is a little dry and had sugar crystals across the top.

I jarred the tin in an oversized mason jar and gave it about 2-3 minutes of tumbling to break it up and mix up the tobacco.

I loaded up a small Canadian and gave it a charring light then true light. The wine note comes through the smoke strong and clear. Its the main player through the bowl. I didn't find it over sweet, but playing between sweet and slightly sour at times. The burn is great and even. No relighting required and it burned down to a nice ash with minimal fuss.

This might be really good paired with some port or even a dark red wine. I put it in a similar category to Pembroke (wine instead of cognac)

I am an aromatic pipe smoker and this gets my highest rating. To get the best flavor, I let it dry out considerably. The Tuscan wine topping is very noticable and adds to the excellent flavor. The room note is great and tolerated by non-smoking spouse. Dan's similar blends (Blue Note & Milonga) are good but not great compared to this, I suspect due to the wine infusion.

As I'm not that much of a Aromatics fan, your best bet is to take this review with a grain of salt. I ordered a sample of this, when I started out smoking the pipe. Back then I mostly smoked and enjoyed aromatics, like many new pipe smokers. Intrigued by a "rum-flavored" aromatic, I figured out this could also be up my alley. Well...I was wrong.

I don't drink, nor like any alcohol, but ever now and then and if well blended I like some Rum or Whiskey in my pipe tobacco. But Da Vinci has a really intense, acidic and fermented and alcohol-ish scent of red-wine. It holds up to the description, yet the flavoring is rather strong. So when I packed a bowl I had mixed feelings.

On first light I was struck by a intense alcohol-ish flavor. The red-wine scent from the unburnt tobacco is also to be found in the taste. Sweet, but not overly with some fermented quality this blend is dominated by the red-wine flavoring. This will most certainly appeal to aromatic lovers and especially those, that like or love (red-)wine as the they managed to get a flavor of real wine into the smoke.

Yet it wasn't for me and I had to dump it after the first half of the bowl. It left me with a aftertaste of red-wine. Really as if I had been drinking a glass of red-wine (which for me is a negative, but a big plus for anyone who likes wine!).

I'll settle for a 2-star rating. Certainly rather a "speciality" for fans of alcoholish pipe tobaccos, and a must try for wine-lovers. Dan Pipes aromatics are either "hate it or love it" imho. Obviously I diddn't love this one, but I see there is a branch of pipe smokers who will like and even love this!

I purchased this as a pouch in Salzburg and enjoyed it quite a bit. I've tried 4 or 5 bowls now. To me, the pouch scent is not really wine, it is sweeter. More like a fruit cake. The ribbon-cut tobacco packed nicely and burned really well. The taste when lit was pretty mild. Lady Nic was also mild in my opinion. The room note was pleasant and not overbearing. The taste let up a bit towards the end so I'll most likely not be trying too hard to make sure I smoke future bowls clear to the end. All-in-all I found this to be an interesting aromatic, so 3 of 4 smoke rings :)

Da Vinci is a high aromatic. I’d describe the tin note as sweet fruity candy soaked in red wine. No surprise should you be familiar with other Dan Tobacco aromatics, such as Blue Note. This one is a tad less sweet and therefore has that slight winy component in substitution.

The taste is creamy, nutty, sweet, fruity and winy. Also VAs and BC come through quite nicely, when the flavoring gets a little less intense after the first couple of draws. From start to finish Da Vinci gets less sweet and more winy. It may start to bite a little with eager puffing, but otherwise remains smooth and creamy. Strength wise I’d call it above medium among aromatics without filter. The room note gets a lot of compliments.

If you are specifically looking for an aromatic, this is one of the better ones out there and among the best DTM has to offer.

I don't drink, anymore at least, but I imagine the taste is what wine snobs call a "dry wine". I also detected a hint of almonds and perhaps a very mild cherry flavor. The flavor overall is pretty mild, especially compared to other wine flavored tobacco products. I managed to smoke the ounce I bought from a tobacco store, but probably wouldn't smoke this again, even if it was given to me.

I don't normally smoke aromatics. But when I am in the mood for one, this tobacco is definitely in the running. One thing I like about it is that it's not goopy like some aromatics and I don't get any glycol note at all. It's not a nice flavor of aged wine and maybe a hint of brandy. Great room note.

This is a real aromatic. If you crave tobacco taste looke elsewhere, but if you have a sweet tooth, this is a good quality Black Cavendish/Virginia blend with a fruity Vanilla flavor. Burns perfectly from initial light to bottom. The last fourth is dominated by a roasted sugary taste, but still very pleasant. Bystanders are very pleased by the room note.

A rather expensive tobacco, with an interesting character. The box declares "A real pleasure for all spoilt smokers and tobacco connoisseurs who prefer a sweet mellow smoke and fragrant aroma". "made from golden virginia grades and soothingly sweet black cavendish" "matured under addition of fullbodied and fruity red chianti wines...".

Out of the tin, it is not too dry nor too wet. The fragrance is extremely pleasurable and reminds of Panettone (traditional christmas italian cake). Once lit, it burns relatively well. May bite the tongue a bit, and despite the claim on the cover, I don't consider this tobacco to be particularly sweet when smoked. It is certainly mellow, with occasional earthy notes, some rare bitter sips, and a relatively mild room note in the same Panettone flavor. These flavor themes tend to come back after the smoke, leaving a pleasant aftertaste which may tend to sweet.

I am torn on this tobacco. It is not my favorite but also a relatively valuable product. If you buy it with the hope of finding Chianti notes you will be disappointed, but it may surprise you anyway with a product that is an overall appreciable experience.

I really like this tobacco. I am not usually a lover of aromatics. This is due to two main reasons. First, they are just a bunch of false advertisements. How many times have us pipe smokers been forced to say "I don't taste any _____"? They always have these luscious and mouthwatering tin descriptions that never live up to their own hype. My other complaints with aromatics is the burn characteristics. Aromatics are by far the hardest genre of tobacco to get to burn well. Kinda frustrating when you think that most beginners are starting on aromatics. It is hard enough to pack and light, and keep a pipe going. Once you add a wet goopy blend you have the definition of frustration.

This tobacco does not suffer from these qualities. In fact, it is almost hard for me to think of this blend as an aromatic. The burn on this stuff is great. It does not appear to me to be moist and it stays lit quite well. At the conclusion of a pipeful of this blend I am met by fine gray ash and a dry heel, something that does not often happen at the end of most aromatic bowls.

As to the flavor of this blend. This is where things get tricky. The flavor is very nice, but I don't understand the "Italian Red Wine" that they claim. I tend to get nice flavors, not really discernible from each other but really tasty. I sometimes think I get a hint of coconut out of this one, but it is fleeting and far in between appearances. I do not see any wine relation here.

Overall really nice. Another great offering from Dan tobacco.

Highly recommended.

I tried this one along with Black Velvet. I found them both similar in strength and overall taste. Both are a spicy aromatic. With Da Vinci, the tin aroma was fruity - almost sherbert-like. If you concentrate on the tin note you can pick up a wine-like essence. There was the hint of caramel while smoking. A very nice aromatic when you are in the mood for something different. Not harsh, no bite, a good, clean smoke all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Never ashy or cigarette-like. Burning characteristics were superior without any moisture or gurgle. A good tobacco presence throughout. Along with Black Velvet, a very tasty aromatic.

I came to this blend during a time when I was mostly smoking English blends. With that in mind it made a surprisingly distinct impression on me. The tin note is a wonderful aroma of raisins and nuts that immediately hits your nose when you pop the top. The flavor surprisingly follows the initial aroma quite well. I enjoyed this blend in short and wide diameter pipes and found that it is a terrific blend to smoke indoors especially over a book or while writing a paper for college. It is fairly dry for an aromatic which I liked and the room note reminds me of what I feel like a man's study or library should smell like, I loved to open a book that I had been reading when I was smoking this and just take a deep whiff! I got several comments on this blend as I smoked it around others, especially girls would tell me that the smell reminded them of their grandfather smoking a pipe when they were young.

It took me practically the whole tin before I could put my finger on what I thought of this blend.

Pembroke is one of my favorite blends because of the way the cognac so beautifully suffuses the flavor. So when I learned that red wine was the casing in this blend I figured I had to give it a try.

It's not a bad smoke. It burns beautifully and nicely fills the mouth with smoke. The room note gets applause from everybody. But try as I might, I could not make out any wine taste unless I convinced myself it was there, and even then I knew I was deceiving myself.

There is a flavour there, but I couldn't put my finger on it until I came across a couple of reviews that helped me define it. I find myself agreeing with The German and Smokey45 that this tastes like nothing so much as flavoured coloured paper. But it is nicely flavoured colour paper.

I can see why it has its fans, but I won't be buying another tin.

Read some positive reviews so thought I'd give this one a try. The package: quality leaf looks with the proper moisture content (as far as my preferences go). Design of the 50g bag so,so, but then again I'll move it to a proper jar.

The experience: Opening the pack reveals a somewhat pleasant smell, but I kinda missed the really pipe-tobacco-straight-out-of-tin-smell; wine? Nope – not detected. I doesn't have the could-just-eat-it kinda smell. First few puffs and a bit of disappointment; yes it is an aromatic, and it does have something there, but it just ain't fully flavored. The aroma is somehow there, but I do get the sense of comparing coke light to coke regular – know what I mean? Burns well till the very last bit, no bite.

Audience verdict: “stinky, but you don't have to leave the room. yet”

The afterthoughts: not sure I would buy this again; it is kinda flat in the taste, kinda diet, low cal.

One of my favorites so far. This I believe may be something I keep around for a long time in stock. Tin note is great. Almost a subtle spicy wood smell. That same aroma greets you apon first light. Sip slow because this one can sour if pulled to hard. A very mild smoke that I have found is great for mid to afternoon smoke. A little to subtle for after dinner though.

This is the first tinned aromatic I've tried. First impressions on opening the tin are of a very sweeeeet vanilla candy. I get nothing of the advertised wine beyond a vaguely fruity scent.

The aroma carries through well to the smoke. I was hoping it'd be a little more subdued. Very sweet, without much tobacco flavor. Too much flavoring, too little backbone to this one, and the room-note makes my girlfriend nauseous after a little while. Not completely without redeeming factors, I smoke this for a change of pace (out of a cob) but I won't be buying any more.

Opening the tin this tobacco smells like a strong mixture of vanilla, with a hint of honey.

Smoking at first is unsatisfying, burns a bit hot too.

Room note is a hint of vanilla, but not exactly pleasant.

After caking the bowl with this, the bitterness leaves a bit.

If you can manage to smoke this entire tin, the reward comes in the last 5-10 bowls.

It's a nice sweet smoke, I was very able to detect the wine flavoring; it in my opinion it becomes very prominant and sweet the last 1/3 bowl, it's a bit to sweet for me a lot of the time. The room note is top notch. I only gave it 3 stars because I reach a limit on how much I want of it.

I must admit, I never would have selected an aromatic blend enhanced with wine. I do enjoy Rum blends, some Brandy and Whiskey blends but never thought a wine and tobacco combination would be appealing. That being said, after a long conversation with my local tobacconist one day he suggested I give this blend a try. Well, the man knows his bussiness ! I found Da Vinci to be smooth, sweet and delicious. The hint of Tuscan wine is mild and fleeting both in the pouch and in the smoke creating an excellent dimension. The blend has an overall honeyed sweetness that when combined with the mild and musty red wine flavors creates a truley unique and one of a kind smoking experiance.

Da Vinci is a "MUST TRY" for the fan of aromatic blends.

The pouch aroma is sweet and reminds me of fruit and caramel with a background hint of vanilla. Although the blend is infused with Tuscan red wine, I failed to detect it in the pouch. The tobacco lights easily and initially burns cool, providing a sweet smoke with caramel and fruit flavors coming to the foreground. As the smoke progressed hints of wine and spice also came through and I began to detect a flavor not unlike the Green River Black Cavendish tobaccos used in blends like Benjamin Hartwell's Evening Stroll and Backwood's Black and Gold. Like many aromatics Da Vinci has a tendency to get hot and damp toward the end of the bowl and despite slow smoking I did experience a small amount of tongue bite.

A very smooth, luxurious smoke with the famous ?Blue Note? touch in the background. The Tuscan red wine has just the right touch to make this blend very tasty. Bold yet not overpowering. Dan Tobacco has never let me down and the room note is awesome. This blend did not bite but left a velvet-like taste on the tongue. ?Elegantly tasty? describes this blend well. Flavor: Disgusting. Not like smoking tobacco at all. Tastes like rotten fruit with sour milk. The casing is too much, so disgustingly sweet it actually gave me a headache. After smoking a bowl I felt like I had just eaten 2 Lbs. of fudge.

Aroma: Think pixie sticks with fruit melange air freshner.

Tin Aroma: Its only saving grace. Interesting and, although overly sweet, pleasant.

Room note: Fruit melange air freshner.

Burning characteristics: burned HOT HOT HOT no matter how I smoked it. It didn't bite much but after a few puffs I had to stop because the pipe was super hot. Left penty of nasty residue at the bottom of the bowl.

Overall: An unpleasant experience. I tried a few bowls and gave the tin away. I don't mind sweet now and then but this stuff was just too sweet. If I was a hookah smoker and wanted to experience flavors other than tobacco I'd probably like this stuff. I'd recommend this to a hookah smoker or people with an extremely high tolerance for pounds of sugar. Not for a more serious pipe smoker.

I got this tobacco to smoke with my Cavicchi pipes. I liked the sound of casing this tobacco with Chianti. This tobacco is a little wet out of the tin, but has a great nose. When lighting this up you need to let it sit for a minute to let it dry out. One you light it up though this tobacco burns cool and sweet. I get hints of cinnamon and cherries. This is good especially after a more potent tobacco like an English blend, which brings out the sweetness and makes it almost dessert like. btw.. Burning hot is usually a sign of the smoker not the tobacco. I have never had this tobacco burn hot and I have had multiple tins.

I had almost put the pipe down altoghether, and then I found this wonderful blend. In a word "Awesome". The Tuscan Cianti fusion creates a magical aroma with a taste to match. Added bonus - the wife absolutely loves the aroma. Everywhere I go, I usually get at least one "Oh my Gosh! What is that?". The taste is a wonderfully smooth red wine overtone with little to no tongue bite. I have found none better, however, I have yet to try Milango (yet to find it).

Now, here's the rub: CAO was bought by Dan Tobacco last January. Dan has decided to discontinue production of the CAO pipe tobacco blends. Supplies are dwindling fast. What is the future of these wonderful blends? Nothing official as of yet. The CAO rep said there wasn't any mention of it at their last sales conference. The word on the street is that Dan sold the formula to one of their manufacturing companies in Sweden, who will rebrand and redistribute the blends in the future.

I like this a lot better than Blue Note, actually and have given it one higher star than its cousin. Its tastes like Blue Note + a red wine topping - think of it as port-flavored pipe tobacco. Da Vinci also has a slight spice-note to it that I like a lot.

All the flavor is from casing, though, so do not expect too much true-tobacco taste. That said, it makes a nice dessert smoke and makes the room smell fabulous. Because it is so heavily cased, smoke this in a cob pipe with a small bowl.

In a side note, I found that stored under the same conditions as Blue Note for full year, this blend keeps its casing flavor far better and does not go stale as fast - another plus with me since I don't go through aromatics very quickly.

upon purchasing this tobacco a while back i was very suprised on the smell. it smells amazing! i immedietly thought it would be way to sweet for my liking but to my suprise it wasnt at all. the taste was apparent through the entire smoke but was never overwhelming. i have found i like it the most when given a day or two to dry a little bit. but it comes straight out of the bag dry enough to be enjoyed. (i bought it from my local tobacconist who carries it in bulk so i have not had the chance to try it out of a tin but im assuming the moistness is very close to out of the bag.) i personally love this tobacco and now buy it in the bulk. personally it reminds me of tirimisu for whatever reason it reminds me of it. i find it as a good smoke for the beginning or expirienced pipe smoker. it is a good all day puffer. unfortunatley i dont get to puff away in the mornings as much as id like to. but i do enjoy this tobacco very much so it is an old friend to me and always remains loyal. my favorite expiriences with this tobacco is after dinner sitting in my recliner with my head tilted back puffing away and through the faint but apparent smoke clouds infront of me i cant help but smile.

I love this stuff. It's the first tobacco that I smoked and I still think it's one of the best around. The room note is wonderful. The flavor is not too strong but still tasty. My wife even recognizes when I have this packed. An all round great aromatic. Not too sweet and not too bland. It travels the mid road with me. I love to go back to this from time to time to remember when I first discovered the magic of smoking aromatics in a pipe.

Da Vinci is a classic, luxurious, aromatic smoke. The flavor has wonderful depth, and remains true all the way through the bowl. I taste light red wine, yet I would not characterize this tobacco as terribly sweet. Despite being an aromatic, it burns relatively cool. Don't be put off by the rich tin aroma -- give it a try.

The middle aged man poured himself a brandy and found his favorite chair. His velour smoking jacket echoed the richness of the Da Vinci he puffed in his rusticated Savinelli. Feet up, workday done, he inhaled the aroma of the liquor in his snifter and leaned his head back. The clouds of white smoke billowing from his pipe and toward the open window carried his worries away.

In fumo e verita. Indeed.

This is rather a nice oddity. There is a sourish smell - not unpleasant - on opening the tin. The tobacco is in chunks of several colours, and fairly dry. Some of the winy overtones come through when the pipe is lit, but the basic taste is of tobacco, and for an aromatic, tobacco of satisfying strength.

It is best to regard Da Vinci as a jeu d`esprit: a light-hearted but not insubstantial composition. I preferred it by far to its stable-mate, Blue Note.

This is the least favorite of my dealings with Dan's Tobacco. While it does smell good from the tin and the taste is somewhat acceptable, it just does not turn me on. Still, the tobak is of high quality leaves so I cannot give it less than two stars.

To Kylepoet: If you enjoy tobak's that smell good and does not set your tounge on fire or your g/f running for the fire extinguisher, you might want to sample Trout Stream from Pipes and Cigars. My g/f loves the smell and I have received no complaints from anyone else either. She also likes Dan's Tobacco Blue Note. But then I have my taste preferences and others have theirs.

An arotic smokers dream.Ive smoked or rather tried to smoke tobacco infused with some type of spirits before but they all fell short of a tranquil experience.Hot and bitter after the spirits burned off.Da Vinci keeps its flavor throughout the bowl,any size. A beautiful blend of golden and dark tobaccos with equal portions of each.Packs and lights well with clouds of blue smoke at the first touch of flame.Puff slowly though tounge bite can occur remember this is an aromatic. Even with the flavoring my tin was not moist but rather dry and ready to burn,honestly as a reformed cig smoker I dont have the patience to wait months or even days. An enjoyable experience for any pipe lover especially for the drugstore smoker lokking for an improvement.

This is one of the first tins of tobacco I ever smoked. It was actually a lot of fun. I smoked this everywhere-- I was even rude or bold enough to walk into the grocery store with the bowl still smoldering-- and if ever a pipe tobacco could be called a chick magnet. . . well, anyway, it was a pleasure. Up until I bought my third tin. Then I don?t know what happened but I just felt like I needed something a little more substantial. Is that fair? Substantial, or something more notably tobacco than noticeably aromatic. Nevertheless, a fine smoke on its own merits, a fine beginner?s blend.

This blend can be confusing, even to an aromatic smoker. When I first bought this tin the tin note was like falling in love. I really loved the smell of the tobacco. The smoke was a little overwhelming though and I found I could not smoke it regularly. The longer this sits and the better I get at smoking, the more I like it. This is still an occasional smoke but it is one I look forward to. I would recommend it to buy if you're looking for something unusual.

Da Vinci has a wonderful looking tin, appealing to just about anybody causing them to buy some. Guess what, it happened to me. But, it was really worth it.

When you open the tin, pull back the covering and get ready for a wonderful aroma to greet you. The blend is comprised of strands of tan, brown and black tobacco that are awaiting the walls of a briar. The aroma is definitely wine and a little spice, but enjoyable. The tobacco comes dry enough to just load into your pipe and set it on fire.

When lighting the pipe you won?t have any problems keeping it lit. The blend stays burning nearly all the way through. You can smoke this at about any pace that you desire and not have to worry about tongue bite; unlike Blue Note which has the tendency to bite back.

The room will be filled with the presence of a winery. Sit down, break out a glass, and kick back and enjoy this wine blend by Dan Tobacco. This will not be a continual blend in my rotation, but I will definitely have several tins in my cellar.

This tobacco has a lovely aroma in the tin, kind of sugar-cookie-esque and sweet. As far as aromatics go, I've got others in which I would invest, but this is satisfying and tasteful for what it is. When I smoke aromatics I tend to lean towards vanilla- or peach-type flavor, and this is different. I got a good deal on a couple tins ($10 for both) and I'm glad I bought them. If you like to experiment, try a tin. If you already know what you like, stay there.

Tuscan red wine? Where? Only at the Olive Garden...

REVISITED: Later Impressions (basically a restatement of what I already said, but I felt it was incomplete):

This burns a little hot and smokey if allowed, but when in the mood for an aromatic "not in normal rotation", I am not disappointed. The room note truly is pleasant as the description says; though it is not specific, at least to our noses, and is vaguely sweet and confection-like. I was busy on the porch while burning and I believe my normal puffing style allowed it to get hot. Halfway through the bowl it turned briefly bitter and cigar like. Cooling and a pipe cleaner later, it was ok, though again smokey and bitter on relight. This lessened towards the end of the bowl.

My review maintains two stars and I doubt I will buy this again, simply because the negatives can be avoided while achieving the same positive smoke with another blend.

I am sure my experiences with this blend are similar to ones that every piper has.This was my first "real" blend. It was the "Tuscan" in the description that got my attention. I did not know of anything to do with "Virginia" or "Cavendish". I picked up a couple ounces with very little to go on. At the time, it was a flavorful affair and is probably a large reason why I kept with pipes. I loved the room note, as did anyone I smoked around, and the taste was a nice and pleasant thing.

Now, something like a year into the hobby, and I can barely stand it. The room note still gets compliments, but the flavor side ranges from candy to bitter (with little in between). The only complexity it has in flavor is the fact that it will taste worse and worse as the bowl goes down. It burns fair enough, but if let it dry (in pouch) for more than a month it burns hot enough to scorch me. The only way I can stop it from keeping it from causing me physical pain is if I keep it slightly moist, which is no good. I can smoke large bowls and get no real nicotine from it, not that I want to smoke large bowls of it.

The only reason I still use it is because I can smoke it around crowds. I am even a moderate fan of aromatics, from time to time, but this is not one that I like.I am grateful for this blend and its history in my collection, but I have moved on.

Oh, my... I hope the Tuscans, Da Vinci's heirs, and the makers of Chianti never find out about this one. I've had raw grappa that tasted better. I asked my g/f what she thought, she asked me to put it out because it was attracting bugs. I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest of this stuff, maybe it makes good fertilizer. From now on, I'll keep my Chianti in a glass on a checkered table cloth, and exercise extreme caution with any aromatic I pick up. it's my fault: I got sucked in by the ad copy.

Anybody have an idea of a decent aromatic that won't send my g/f looking for the fire extinguisher?

I'm not going to lie to you. This tobacco is what got me hooked on the pipe. As my tastes matured, though, i found myself pushing this tin further and further to the back of my desk drawer. I hadn't smoked this blend in a while, so i decided to give it one more try before i threw it away. The bottom line is. Too much flavoring. I mostly smoke virginias these days, and to come back to this was, how do i say it, not a pleasent experience. If you like aromatics, i might recomend it to you. Not for me anymore, i've moved on to much more beautiful things.

If you like heavily-cased aromatics, then this is for you. There's very little tobacco flavor left in the background! Burns rather hotly, too; leaves too much residue. I'm a pipe-newcomer and I don't care for this stuff.

A truly unique aromatic blend overflowing with flavor.This is one that my girlfriend loves for me to smoke.I found it on the sample table of one of my pipe club's meetings.Untill then I'd never heard of it.I'll be buying more of this spirited blend.. Recommended! prep ====Update Sept.1st "04"=== This blend got really "sicky sweet" really fast.The flavor also lingers around in a pipe forever, similarly to "Blue Note". I do'nt plan on trying this again...

I bought this on a whim from the local tobacconist's deep discount chest--at sixty percent off what was the worst that could happen?

Well, turns out it's an excellent smoke. On opening the tin, one is greeted with a boozy sort of coconut-y/vanilla-ish smell (those are the technical terms, I'm afraid...) And as a rare bonus in an aromatic, it's nicely dry in the tin, not goopy at all.

Smokes fairly drily, with an intriguing flavour. Tastes closest to an anisette biscotti dipped in vin santo. Flavour intensifies but does not change over the course of the bowl.

It's a taste that goes right to my heart, and I smoked the tin in record time. There will be more purchased as this will become a regular part of my rotation.

I have somked this on occassion for a couple of years, and I must say, I don't smoke it for my own pleasure. This is one of the "wife pleasing" varieties. The kind she is glad to see you pull off the mantle when company is coming for dinner.

This tobacco is all top dressing. Were it to be removed, the tobacco wouldn't make a decent cigarette. It has all the intricacies of a bowling ball, and about the same number of notes as a didgeriedoo. Underneath all that candy-coating lies a tobacco with all the character of a pirhana. You can do it some justice by mixing in a few coctails, say, scotch on ice. However, I wouldn't recommend Chevis Regal. There's no sense ruining a good libation like that. No, I'd say Wild Turkey would do the trick. You need something strong to dull the senses enough to muddle through this brand. If you have a wife that hates you enough to kill you over that latakia-burdened blend you use, then DaVinci will definitely have her helping you find your lighter and tamper. But if you smoke pipes for your own pleasure, and it's tobacco you wish to taste when you smoke tobacco, then I'd say let this one be.

This is yet another one of my favorites. I find its flavor very sweet and appealing. I would say that it smokes with an almost creamy sweetness with a hint of Chianti. This flavor change places as you progress through the bowl ending with the full flavor of Chianti. Some might not like this due to the fact that the flavor lingers in your mouth for quite some time but if you find it pleasant it is not a problem. There is no noticeable bite and smokes relatively cool the only problem is that it smokes very wet out of the tin. I tried several different packing techniques and tried to smoke as slowly as possible and it still smoked very wet. Once things are allowed to dry out a little the problem diminishes. Room note is pleasant to neutral. A great after dinner smoke.

This stuff just doesn't do it for me. It has way too much sweetness for this boy. While I don't mind a bowl of blue note once in a great while, this was just too aromatic for me. I think that this should mightily appeal to the aromatic smoker however, as the tobacco is of high quality and the flavor and room note are wonderful, however lacking any natural tobacco essence whatsoever.

I had my doubts about this tobacco when I first openned the lid and smelled the fruitiness, as I prefer the Vanilla aromatics.

It packed fairly well and lit pretty easily, not really harsh as I thought it would be, although it can come up and bite the tongue if smoked to fast. It has a unique aroma and flavor about it that I find appealing not as fruity as the open tin lead me to believe. I did find this tobacco to keep my interest as it gave a little sweetness to the taste about half way through the bowl.

This is similar to Blue Note, Sweet Vanilla Honeydew, and Gold Blend that really needs a designated pipe to smoke this tobacco. I did prefer this in a smaller bowl over my larger bowl pipes.

Very potent in the tin. This is a nice smoke that lights well and is sweet on the pallet. Fruity, I can't tell what flavour hits me the most. It is cased with chianti.

It starts off a little weak but the flaour builds as the bowl burns. I was very impressed with the flavour and will keep this on hand when a sweet aromatic is called for.

Very enjoyable blend. The tin aroma is sweet and fruity. I expected the wine flavoring to overpower the blend, but it is quite subtle and smooth when lit. I recommend letting it dry a bit bafore smoking, as it burns a bit hot straight from the tin. Overall, a very good tobacco.

This seems to be one of those love it or hate blends, with lots of 4-star or 1-star reviews. The tin note was very nice, suggesting figs and dates (some say raisin), and a faint tickle on the nostrils which suggest some volatile acidity from the wine. My own experience in using either wine or coffee for flavorings is that once the sugars combust you are left with bitter dregs. That’s why coffee flavoring is so difficult to achieve in pipe tobacco. As for wine, I find that something more concentrated like ruby port gives a better end result than wine. I mention all of this because there is a tartness present which some seem to like - “Pleasantly sour’ as one reviewer put it - while others are put off by it. I find it subtle enough that it doesn’t really bother me that much. My main criticism is that the only real flavor I get is when there seems to be a concentrated flavor burst from a clump of black Cavendish, tasting of vanilla and caramelized sugars, while most of the time the light golden Virginias are rather boring and nearly tasteless. One reviewer described the blend as “flavored hay” which is kind of what I think, too!

For whatever reason this blend does put out a high volume of smoke for an aromatic. The first time I had a bowl I looked around the deck worried that maybe an ember had set fire to some dried leaves! In the end, I only smoked seven bowls of this over the course of a few months, then went on to tweak the rest with a reduction of tawny port and couple drops of walnut oil which I then baked onto the tobacco at 145 degrees for about an hour. That turned out nicely, but nothing I’d want to bother with again.

Even if cost is no object and you can afford to buy one of everything on the market to try, there is still the question of your precious pipe time. I’d say the risk is too high with this one that you will be disappointed as I was, and even though I’m giving two stars for my own lackluster level of enjoyment, I can’t really recommend this one. Read the other reviews carefully before you decide!

CAO Da Vinci (manufactured by DTM): Tin of vanilla, spices and mild dark chocolate. Tobacco is mostly dark brown and black with a little tan. The fat ribbon cut has some moisture, no drying needed. Burns slow with relights. The strength is mild and nic is mild. Flavoring is strong, and nothing like the tin note. Flavor notes of mildly sweet and tart red wine. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of lemon grass, tart dark fruit, dry herbs, wood, salty caramel, spicy, mild earth, mild floral, mild sweet background note, and a mildly peppery retro. Virginias is leading with Flavoring and Cavendish supporting. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good.

I tried this as it came in a sample group- it is a good everyday type smoke and one that is enhanced by a moderate consumption of your favorite red wine. I smoke this in a churchwarden type pipe and enjoy the cooler flavored taste in a more traditional way. Decent room note.

I bought Dan Tobacco's Da Vinci because a woman who works at The Briar Shoppe said she loves how it smells. I like to smoke there, their free matches are the best in the world, and I want them to stay in business, so I paid nearly double what I would pay online to try this. I usually just get pipe cleaners there. The woman came and sat near me as I lit up, so I guess the room note is good. Da Vinci smokes well and tastes pretty good, but the flavor comes from what has been added, rather than from the tobacco itself.

Tin note is very sweet with aromas of caramel and some kind of fruit(thinking plum) dominating. Lit fairly easily and stayed lit without gooping up though it did have its hot moments. I am a fan of red wines and have only sampled chianti a handful of times. The taste of the tobacco when smoked starts out very tangy sweet with the higher range notes of plum, citrus and some vanilla. Mid to end of bowl it develops into a more deep, bass note of plum and a rather spicey, licorice-like aroma in the nose. Overall, it does not strike me as wine though the tin description does allow one to use their imagination and make this association. However, it is a decent quality aromatic and my only complaint is its very notcieable lack of true tobacco body and flavour.

A quality tobacco, but perhaps not my cup of tea. I still don't undestand if it has a taste -and in that case tastes good- or not. Too mild, it's good for me most after breakfast. Later I feel it becoming tasteless and I prefer something with more (english) taste.

A must try if you like aromatics.
