Hey, I like this Pennington Gap! It's slightly aromatic (whiskey flavoring perhaps?)and has a pinch of Perique and black leaf (cased cavendish) but the Burley really shines. And, being the nicotine lover that I am, this one really hit the spot, especially in the evenings right after dinner.

I would especially urge those who enjoy their Perique in small doses to give this blend a try - absolutely delightful.

I should also mention that the cube cut of the leaf and the perfect moisture content makes this one of the easiest blends to pack and light that I've ever found.

Pennington Gap was a real change of pace for me, as I smoke mostly VaPers and straight Virginias. I was surprised, therefore, to discover how much I enjoyed PG.

Upon opening the tin, I was very pleased with the aroma, which reminded me of Raisinettes (one of my favorite dime-store candies). Being a cube cut, it is easy to pack, although it requires a bit of drying out before it lights easily. Once lit, it burns slowly and evenly, requiring no relights, and leaving a light colored ash at the finish with not goopiness. Despite the casing, PG is a very dry smoke with not even a hint of tongue bite.

PG is a very tasty tobacco throughout the smoke. The Perique predominates for the first third of the bowl. After that, the taste is of a rich, nutty burley (as opposed to the grassiness that I often detect in burley blends) and, toward the end of the bowl, the Cavendish takes over. The casing adds a sweet top note throughout the smoke. However, I wouldn't say that the casing tastes like bourbon -- more like honey and licorice.

A most enjoyable smoke and one that I would recommend to any pipe smoker who likes Perique and sweeter blends. Without a doubt, it is one of the best tobaccos I have smoked in the past year or so. At $4.50/ounce, PG is a fairly expensive pipe tobacco but one that is worth every penny IMO.

Oh god, This is no good. It suffers the same fate as Haddo's Delight to my tastes. A very good mix of quality leaf that I should enjoy that is doused with a nearly disgusting topping. This is supposed to be a whiskey topping, but doesn't taste like a real whiskey to me. More of one of those whiskey flavored syrups that you would get on a lower quality aromatic.

This one is slightly better than Haddo's, but is still pretty bad to me. I will somewhat recommend it to someone if they like the flavor profile of say, Borkum Riff Whiskey, they may enjoy this one a little more.

Tastes bad but does not bite. Never again.

I expect more from Cornell and Diehl, I usually like their burley blends and alcohol toppings, but this is not even close to hitting home.

It took a while for me to figure out how to smoke this stuff. There were a couple of issues to contend with. As to not bore you I will just give my conclution. 1)This stuff must be dried out almost to the point of being crunchy or you'll just end up with a goopy blob. 2) Due to the cube cut it must not be firmly packed into the bowl but rather loaded loosly to the top and then slightly tamped. If you tamp it down too hard during loading or smoking it will blob up and not draw well. Using these methods, this is a tasty, quality smoke, semi sweet with some complexity. Geared more to the Burley lover rather than aromatic IMHO, it does have the qualities of both. The Perique is an evident and nice addition. The Bourbon does add to a nice tin fragrance but not much to the taste. It does turn a little sour towards the bottom of the bowl, but don't we all LOL.

A very interesting tobacco, when you pop the tin it's as though you twisted open the bottle of your favorite bourbon. Right out of the tin you can taste the bourbon coming out. The Perique is there but not over powering this has a nice side stream aroma and very pleasant aroma in general. For some reason it does dry my mouth out a little, I'm guessing it's the flavoring however it has a good flavor that stays through the entire bowl. It packs well and smokes dry producing a nice soft gray ash with minimal re-lights. The flavor seems to get richer and sweeter as you get to the mid bowl and beyond. I feel that this is the Burley and Black Cavendish taking over. Overall a very good smoke!

I'll begin by saying that I tried this blend in the interest of finding a suitable replacement for Frog Morton's Cellar in my rotation, and for this task, it won't do, but thankfully it has merits of its own.

A nose in the tin doesn't produce the smell of Bourbon to me, but the aroma does bear a resemblance to whiskey. I'll take Cornell & Diehl's word that it's bourbon they added, but if so, the aroma has changed significantly now mixed with the tobacco. It doesn't smell bad, but it doesn't strike my fancy either.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the aroma does translate to the taste a little bit. I detect it as a faint "brown-sugary" accent to the already nutty flavor profile of this tobacco, and they marry quite nicely.

Overall, I'd say this is a blend worth trying, if, like me, you like the idea of an aromatic, but can't stand the goopy stuff. It has a mild flavoring that enhances the already decent tobacco. Well done.

Yikes! I think that the repulsive flavor I get from this is a combo of the Bourbon topping and the dark fruit of the Perique. Both are fine by themselves, but the combo makes me want to gag. It tastes like sweet and sour rotting fruit. The second half of the bowl is somewhat bearable because the topping fades a bit, but the first half is just too much for me. Never mind whatever good qualities the Kentucky may have, I can't get past that rotting fruit.

Mild to medium in body. Medium in taste. Mild to medium in rotting fruit. Burns very well.

I found this tin at the back of a shelf at the local tobacconist where it had been for 4 years and one month. Shelf aged tobaccos are always a good find, so I snatched it up. I wasn't sure if it's aromatic qualities would be a turn off for me, but I bought it anyway. Upon opening the tin, the aroma was pungent and alluring. This cube cut blend was lightly topped and was anything but cloying. The Perique was evident and it just smelled inviting. It packs easy and the flavor was that of tobacco with just a hint of whiskey. I don't know if the smoothness can be attributed to age, but this blend was really smooth. It burned cool and was a genuine pleasure to smoke. No goopiness, just a combination of quality tobaccos that really came together well. I can confidently say that I'll purchase it again.

When I was given this tin in a trade, it was new and fresh and was to me a little too green and overwhelming on my taste buds. I found it also tended to bite a little. I then put it up sealed tight in my cellar and when browsing the other day found it 6 years later and thought I would retry it. Thus my experience here is on a 6 year old tin. I found it to have matured nicely and am quite enjoying it now.

Upon opening it, the first things I noticed was that it is pressed and cut into small square cube cut very dark, almost black in appearance. It has an aroma of dark peat with a spicy sweetness. Looks and smells very rich. It is somewhat wet and sticky so I let it dry until it no longer sticks to my fingers. Like this it packs and lights up very easy and is great for a slow relaxing smoke. The flavor is a rich, deep, full flavor of burley with the bourbon topping present but not overwhelming and the perique adding it's spicy yet subtle character. It is not sweet really, but it is full on the tongue. Smoked fast it is hot but smoked slow it is very nice and cool. The room note is strong but pleasant and I could smell the perique amongst the sweet burly aroma. It smokes slowly down the pipe leaving very little moisture or dottle in the bottom of the pipe. Mostly produces a steely grey ash with white edges.

I like this blend with age on it and think it will appeal to aromatic smokers and non aromatic smokers alike. Because I found it overwhelming right out of the tin without aging, I am giving three out of four stars.

Early in my smoking career I bought a tin of Pennington Gap. It was contained in one of those earlier tins with the metal lid. When I broke the thing open it was dried to a crisp. I promptly rehydrated the contents and consumed the tobacco with few complaints. A few years down the road, I decided to resample Pennington Gap.

Things were a little different this time around. The first thing I noticed when opening the tin was the overwhelming scent of booze. This stuff was dripping in it. The tobacco was wet, very wet. I looked to the date on the bottom of the tin, noticing it was a fresh batch, just two weeks old.

I didn't bother to dry my first bowl out before smoking. I loaded up a small Grabow and fiddled with the light. It burned hot and uneven, which immediately indicated that I was too hasty in my desire to smoke the stuff.

The Burley predominates the entire smoke. I couldn't detect the Perique at all, and that goes the same for the Bourbon topping. Pennington Gap is a fairly heavy smoke. It won't kill you, but you will likely enjoy a nice nicotine hit. No real surprises here. If you like Burley blends, like Edgeworth or Prince Albert, you'll feel right at home.

I'll make sure to air out subsequent bowls before smoking.

Opening the tin I expected to smell that usual "whisky" flavor standing way above the rest.I did not. What I smelled was IMO,smelled like....(don't laugh)...Banana Pudding. I just happen to love Banana pudding though,so thats a good thing. I pulled the paper cover off the tin(which was before the blessed 8oz tin), and had a peek at the weed. RICH DEEP BURLEY CUBED THE BEST I EVER DID SAY I SAID, and PERIQUE,lawdy mercy,that good ol tobacco from down the road,so good and so right. Beautiful chunks with BLACK CAVENDISH mixed in. This is one of the most premium tobaccos of the whole damn wide world. It packed well and surprized me when it lit so well and stayed that way. The taste is again one of those lucious burley nutty warm/cool smokes. The bourbon is just right and plays softly in the background,disapearing and high-lighting the wonderful rich leaf. The Louisanna leaf has that stewed fruit taste,and it all goes together so well. True tobacco taste. An excellent tobacco blend from an excellent tobacco blender,Brother Craig Tarler. A+++++

update; Hey listen up here,you ever been to the fair? You know how ever thing cooking smells so nice and you wanna eat everything but the wife says you gonna get so damn fat and you eat it anyway? Well,thats how this tobacco is,it tastes like a dedgum carnival! TRAVEL east down to the carnival and taste this delicious tobacco.

Cracked open a tin with just under 4 years of age on it...

Appearance: Mostly dark with some brown chunks mixed in..very "rough cut" if you will..smells deeply of fermenting fruit with a slight tinge of alcohol. Really smells good to me...but I don't detect bourbon in the note..

Packing & lighting: Easy 3-step & go. My sample is at the ideal moisture content, that is to say a tad moist..which I prefer over dry. This enables a nice springy pack and it takes easily to flame.

Smoking: Pennington Gap starts off with a nice sweet note. To me it tastes of a "watered down" cavendish, in a good way. I get the black cav tastes but not in an overwhelming way. I like the occasional bowl of BCA etc.. but I tire quickly of that flavor. Its well presented here not dominating the smoke at all but just contributing a bit to the note and smoothing out the burley. I don't get the perique here really at all..if the description didn't list it I wouldn't have guessed its present. Perhaps a slight spice of it here & there but not much more. All & all a really balanced blend of its component tobaccos perhaps leaning slightly heavier on the black cav. I also don't get much of the whiskey flavor but it is present and for my tastes I wouldn't mind if it were a bit stronger. I was looking for an alternative to Borkum Reef whiskey which I enjoy the flavor of but cannot smoke due to how insanely bitey it is..speaking of bite you will find none here. This is an extremely well behaved tobacco and will tolerate poor technique without issue. A great trait for those times when you're not paying much attention to the smoke and get sloppy on cadence/tamping. That said, its worth taking the time here to really ponder the smoke as it can develop into something more then the sum of its parts would indicate. While its not a "complex" or "heady" smoke by any means you'd be doing a disservice here by not giving it a chance. Burns to the bottom with minimal relights..

Finish: Nice finish here sweetness remains to the bottom without any burley bitters. No goop or dottle mess left behind. Although this is an aromatic I can't imagine this ghosting a pipe with anything other then perhaps a slightly sweet essence.

Overall a good smoke worth the price of admission...can I have a bit more bourbon in mine next time though?

I have a three year old tin that I opened, sampled, didn't care for and put away for the future. Well the future is here and I'm smoking this now.

When first opened the tobacco was quite moist and the bourbon was much in evidence. Now with drying and aging the bourbon has calmed down and the tobacco is much drier, a good thing is this case. Due to the fine cut this almost packs itself and a single match had it off and running. Flavors are varied but a pleasant nutty burley, some raisins (the reviewer who said "dark fruit" hit the nail on the head) the a bit of spice from the perique pretty well sums it up. Takes very little draw to keep going, making it a cool, mild and "quiet" smoke. This will definitely be a regular. though not necessarily everyday, smoke. It is very well prepared and has a taste that's something different. This is one you'll want to try when you can sit and enjoy it.

UPDATE: Time in the tin has mellowed this blend for me and made it more palatable. The sourness seems to have been minimized (perhaps this is due to the bourbon casing wearing off?) and the perique does not seem as overwhelming. As a result, I am upgrading this by one star. It is still not my favorite aromatic and definitely not my "go-to" blend, but it deserves a try. Original review below.

I have to dissent on this one. On the positive note, it DOES actually smell like whiskey out of the tin (unlike most so-called whiskey-flavored tobaccos) and it has a nice medium strength and very good room note. However, the bourbon flavoring is nearly undetectable upon smoking it and all I got, time after time, was a strong sour/spicy taste. It does not taste that sweet at all. Not that this is totally unpleasant tasting, but nor is it something I crave.

On another note: The tin is only half-full (as some others have noted), which might be due to the fact it is sopping wet (with whiskey?), resulting in a very dense leaf. Amazingly, it actually stays reasonably lit without drying in this state. So, I don't see a lot of value per ounce here.

Pennington Gap might be a good one to try out for those you who normally hate aromatics but need something that won't offend others since it's little bit of sweetness seems to come mostly from the tobaccos rather than casings. For me the burley is too sour and the Perique is too much (it makes my nose sting) and the taste is just "ok". I would not buy it again.

This blend was a nice change of pace for me. It burned well with very little drying out, the flavor of tobacco and the backdrop of bourbon consistently called me back for another bowl, and the aroma was very pleasant. I tend to drink ale or bourbon with my smokes, so this worked well. Also matches well with a dark coffee. I liked it slightly above Barbary Coast, but not by much.

what a lovely piece of work craig tarler has done on this one! the bourbon topdressing can definitely be detected in the pouch aroma, with some minor fruit overtones in the background. the blend is mostly dark brown and black in coloration, with both cube cut burley and black cavendish in abundance. the real treat begins when match is touched to weed. the first flavor is a sweetness similar to a fine red Virginia, even though none is listed in the ingredients. apparently it's the bourbon working with the burley to create a different and delicious treat for the taste buds. perique is also listed, although i really don't seem to be able to detect it. maybe it's also working its' magic in concert with the bourbon. like any burley, the real key to enjoyment is to smoke slowly at moments of relaxation and contemplation. i wouldn't pick this as a tobacco to puff while mowing the yard; it would be too easy to rush the burn and ruin the experience. i'm a big fan of smoking burley blends in cob pipes. as i write this, some morley's best (another great C&D tobac) is tickling my tastebuds in a medium sized cob. speaking of which, sometimes i think we in the pipe community can get a bit too hung up on high grade pipes and expensive tinned blends. i've had many a good smoke with cobs and prince albert or half and half. sorry to get off the subject a bit; back to Pennington Gap. this is an EXCELLENT blend with a good room note. if you are any kind of burley fan, you MUST try it. will i be buying more tins? probably not; craig has been courteous enough to make it (and his other tinned blends) available in bulk. if i make it to the KC pipe show, at least one bag will be coming home with me, to be squirreled away in the cellar. can't wait to see what this one is like with some aging! bravo, craig!!

When first opened, this is a wonderful aromatic--smooth, sweet, tasty, with real character. A fun smoke, especially in the summer. Unfortunately, as with most aromatics, the fun subsides the longer the tin is open. After awhile, this seems to be nothing but a nice burley jazzed up with a bit of Perique and some black Cavendish. It's ok, but nothing spectacular.

That being said, if you like high-quality burley as your main smoke, you will probably like this. It's not nuanced, but it is reliably smooth and tasty, especially at first.

If you are an aromatic smoker, especially one who smokes Lane bulks or drugstore blends, run, don't walk, to get a few cans of this.

I tried Penningtoan Gap gap based on the review and recommendation of a friend (here and on a message board). He was right on the money.

When I first opened the tin and took a big whif I thought "Am I supposed to put this in a glass with ice, or in my pipe?" The bourbon smell was really strong. I wondered if I would taste anything else in the tobacco. I needn't have worried. It's a nice looking blend too. Mostly darker browns with some light brown and a bit of black. Felt a bit damp, but that proved to be no problem.

The cube cut made this an easy load. Just gravity feed it in, using the tamper once a while to even it out across the bowl.

The charring light tasted like a sip of bourbon. On the re-light, things got going well. I expected the bourbon flavor to disappear pretty fast, but it didn't. I suspect the topping combined with the Perique to keep a nice toned-down bourbon flavor going to the mid-bowl point.

After mid-bowl the bourbon flavor faded and the Perique came out a bit more. Then the burley started to show up with a slightly nutty flavor. It combined well with the Perique. There was a bit of an underlying sweetness that made an interesting combination with the burley. Must be the Black Cavendish.

Toward the bottom of the bowl, the Perique became pronounced, but not too strong.

Overall, a good smoke. Left a nice fine ash, and the pipe was nice and dry. Required minimal re-lights.

If you like Barbary Coast, Pennington Gap will be a good choice. Not as complex, but a nice change of pace.

"What a lovely piece of work Craig Tarler has done on this one!" "Pennington Gap taught me a lesson. Don't judge a blend strictly by its ingredients." "Pennington Gap is just great." "I normally don't care for aromatics, but I have to say this is some nice stuff."

With the above comments as a guide I bought two tins of this blend - I'll be buying my next installment in bulk. My normal Astley's, Dunhill's, Pease's, Gawith's, etc. are still my cherished friends...but bowl after bowl in pipe after pipe I really enjoyed this. The term "fun" has been often used in reviews (Fun? Hmm-m-m-m. We'll see about THAT.) Well, I can only say that I agree wholeheartedly. I sipped, I sidestreamed, I puffed like a steam engine going out of the station. It all worked, though severe puffing brought out the gurgle. I didn't care, pipe cleaners are cheap...I was having FUN! The aroma is OK, the burn is easy and complete, the taste is excellent, the SMOKE is sublime. With a nice satellite photo I'm sure you could pick out my smoke stream from 200 miles up! Clouds of the stuff! What a delight! Layers - no. Subtlety - no. Development - no. Back slapping, knee whacking, by gosh I like this stuff fun - you betcha! Buy it. Enjoy it. You'll be glad you did.

Pennington Gap is a unique blend! The tin note is, well, to say the least off putting at first. The flavor in the pipe is very good, the Burley is nutty and earthy with a bit of chocolate to my palate. The Black cavendish brings a smidge of sweetness and the Perique adds a tad of stewed fruit to the mix. The bourbon is there but not as present as it is in the tin note. Getting past that initial whiff of fruit soaked in Southern Comfort you have a pretty good smoke. Burns clean and consistent throughout the bowl leaves some moisture and has a pleasant room note. The nicotine is middle of the road for me. All in all a well done blend. Solid 3 for me.

Huh. Seems odd that this is only offered in 2 ounce tins (indicative of not being a top seller). After trying a number of new blends this year, I've decided I really like the combination of Burley, Cavendish, and a big whack of Perique. That said, I was still a little hesitant going into this one. I'm always a bit leery of heavily topped blends, I'd never smoked a cube-cut, and the reviews for this are all over the place. I needn't have worried; I think this may become a regular member of my cellar. The tin note is... Odd. The first thought I had was my dad's banana bread pudding, studded with raisins and sweetened with blackstrap molasses (his actual recipe). Ouch, right in the childhood. While a little bit more damp than I would normally smoke, it didn't look to be problematic. I disregarded all the admonishments about how to pack a cube-cut and bulldozed ahead. Took just a little extra fire to start, but behaved well after. The flavor is surprisingly close to the tin note; dessert-like without being cloying. About mid-bowl, the sweeter notes start to recede, leaving you with a nice nutty Burley and some Perique fruit and pepper. Didn't bite me, despite the topping. Burns very slowly, but can get hot if pushed too hard. Room note is a pleasant sweet tobacco note. Seems to smoke best in wider bowls. Another C&D winner, and a new fave for me. Now if only it came in bulk...

When you open the tin, the smell of some kind of liquor immediately floods the environment. When you bring it to the nose, it seems that instead of tobacco, it is bringing a glass with some type of alcohol, until the unmistakable perique that fights with the topping for the prominence also appears. The mixture is mostly very dark, with a good number of black leaves, and to a lesser extent dark brown, nothing strange if you take into account the tobaccos that compose it. In the tin that I bought, the tobacco cut does not come in cubes but in ribbon, with some black flakes rolled up on themselves that I took care of unrolling for better drying and equalizing the size of the strands. I let it dry for about fifteen minutes and although the tobacco is still a bit damp I carry the Santambrogio, one of the pipes I have for smoking aromatics.

When lighting the vapors of the alcoholic topping that it carries are released. Once in operation, the aroma and flavor are quite intense at first and similar to what it promised when opening the tin. Generous amounts of heavy smoke are produced during smoking and the tobacco burns evenly and constantly without requiring more than a few re-ignitions, even though the drying time was quite short. For the topping it reminds me of some other aromatic based on whiskey but unlike those this one is drier and does not attack my tongue at all, although I am smoking it with a faster and more carefree cadence than I usually do with this type of mixtures. The liquor gradually disappears during the smoke and, reaching the middle of the bowl, it only appears subtly from time to time. Curiously, the same thing happens with the perique, as if they were hand in hand from beginning to end. From then on the smoke loses a lot of grace and becomes progressively monotonous and flat.

In general it has been pleasant in its first half and I look forward to repeating it tomorrow in another pipe to see how it behaves the second time.

Update: I tend not to smoke many non flake blends, finding they smoke to fast, but this seems great in a smaller bent pipe, as I have recieved bite from prolonged bowl-fulls of this, my small bent cured this & allowed constant waves of the very nice sidestream smoke!

THis one was craned straight to the top of my favourite " other than VA's" -smoke list, this is a premium burley/perique blend with an aromatic bent. Some may think this too heavily topped, but I think the perique & cube cut balance the whole thing out very nicely. The rich woodsy/cherryish/spicy-sweet tin aroma is very appealing to me, both in the tin & bowl. Fairly intense this is , The C & D fellas Don't hold back with the perique! So if your like me & you like the intensity of a perique-heavy blend you will enjoy. Now this & McC's 2015 are my 2 favorite smokes to sit back & sink roots with a bottle of mash with. ( in moderation)

As I continue on my journey through the world of burley tobaccos I decided to give this blend a whorl. Wow- Tasty! I hesitate to describe this blend as a burley only because it is much more of an aromatic than anything else. I normally don't care for aromatics, but I have to say this is some nice stuff. The relights are sweet rather than bitter like most burley blends and the smoke is nice and rich. The casing is one of the better even though the tin smell is very strong. You can definitely taste the quality tobacco used in this blend, however the flavoring is certainly the dominate taste. This is fine in this case since the bourbon topping is done quite well. The only other aromatic tobaccos that are flavored with booze that I don't mind are mephisto and Orlick's scotch mixture, and both are not as good as this one is. It burns nice and cool like a nice burley should. If you are looking for a great burley experience and nothing else this may not float your boat, but if you want to try an excellent aromatic with a fine rich tobacco taste, give it a try. I think you will be surprised!

I hate to say it but this great tobacco may just well be the final nail in the ol' Latakia coffin. Until a short while ago, I was a sworn Latakia addict. That is until I met Barbary Coast and other fine high-quality Burley based blends. These types of tobacco have that real "tobacco" taste without being focused on a particular flavor (such as Latakia). Why it took me over a decade to figure this out is beyond me.

Pennington Gap is just great. Don't be fooled by the Bourbon casing. While the tin aroma is Bourbon big-time, the flavor of the tobacco is not. Instead, it has a full-bodied all natural tobacco flavor with touches of Perique spice and Cavendish roundness. Hints of natural (not casing) sweetness. A nice aroma but not aromatic in that goopy sort of way.

I guess Latakia blends to me are like Scotch whiskey, whereas Pennington Gap and other similar Burley blends are like Sour Mash. Both are dark and naturally woodsy/sweet, but one is smokey and the other is not.

Really good stuff. Try it!

I purchased this tin based on it's description. I like some Burley blends and the addition of Perique to spice it up a bit and Black Cavendish to smooth it out sounded very much to my taste. Finished with Bourbon I thought might be good if not over done.

When first opened, I found the blend to be a bit on the moist side compared to other C&D Vintage Blends. The aroma of Bourbon was pretty strong.

After letting the tobacco get a little drier, I dug in and fired up a bowl. My initial smoke was nothing special, perhaps a bit of sharpness from the Perique but not exceptional, just good.

Smoking several more bowls over the course of several weeks really put the hooks in me. This blend is very smooth and flavorful, with a welcome bit of sweetness I wouldn't expect from Burley. The Black Cavendish element contributes this I suppose, but it doesn't overwhelm. The Bourbon flavoring is done very well, it should please both fans of good aromatics as well as fans of Burley. The tobacco flavor is predominant, and it is good. Pennington Gap, like most really good blends, is more than the sum of its parts. It is a rich Burley lifted up with a sparing amount of Perique - which I have come to appreciate.

The cut makes for very easy loading and smoking. It seems to burn a bit quickly, but that is probably because it is so enjoyable. It seems to like larger bowl sizes. "The Gap" smokes very nicely to the bottom of the bowl and has earned a place on my short list of favorite smokes.

Pennington Gap is described on the tin as "finished with bourbon for that touch of southern hospitality." I'm not a big fan of blends finished with spirits, as I find they tend to bite a little more than I'd like. The tobacco itself is a "crumble cake," a coal-to-chocolate color with bright flecks of cube-cut burley, and the tin aroma is sweet, fruity, and slightly nutty (the burley shining through, I presume).

The tobacco's exposition is smooth and clean, with an easy light and an initial burst of flavor. There is a definite casing that is well-balanced with cavendish and burley, and burns off quickly, leaving distinct flavors of cavendish and something slightly sour (the bourbon?). Perique makes intermittent appearances through the first third of the bowl, becoming more pronounced as the bowl progresses. It's a tasty and satisfying smoke, very smooth, cool and gentle, exceedingly pleasant through the nose. I've smelled a friend smoke this blend as well, and it has a wonderful aroma.

I notice a bit of the sweetness returning towards the end of the bowl. It seems to take on some fuller dimension and linger on the palate at its finish, and leaves behind a very fine white ash.

This is easily my favorite C&D blend, and a great blend for a regular smoke.

Pennington Gap taught me a lesson. Don't judge a blend strictly by its ingredients. Based on the description, I should never have even tried it. Burley?no way! Cube cut?absolutely not! Bourbon?.I can't stand the stuff! And some way Perique and that Black Cavendish stuff is going to bring it all together?.Impossible! But I was tempted as I noticed that other reviewers that prefer English Virginia, Oriental, Latakia blends "suprisedly" liked this blend. And so do I. The pouch aroma is heavy with burley, and the aromatic prevails. The blend looks like something I would have made in a food processor. But, in the pipe, the burley and bourbon and Cavendish combine into a very pleasant uniform nutty smooth taste. Each seems to mute the strength of the other and combines into a very pleasant flavor. The Perique adds a snap to the blend. As much as I have tried, it is impossible to make this bite. Burley blends usually grab me in the back of my throat, but this blend does not do that. Although it is fairly moist for a C&D blend, it smokes dry, and cool. The flavor remains consistent from top to bottom. The bottom of the bowl had nothing but a very dark, blackish ash. The room aroma is very friendly. This is one of the few blends that I can notice and enjoy the aroma while smoking it. I prefer it in a small bowl, and I have been smoking it in a very small Meerschaum. In fact, I do not like it in a large bowl where the burley becomes more prevalent. My overall description of this blend would be "fun". It goes well with beer, burgers, dogs, and apple pie. I also recommend it in bulk rather than in the tin form. This is a heavy tobacco by weight (one can gravity feed this from a long distance), and the bulk form is vacuum sealed, and it looks and feels like a brick. The package could be a lethal weapon in the wrong hands. You can reach into the bag and run your fingers through the funny cut components adding to the fun. This would also be a great blend for a beginner for it's a non-goopy aromatic with plenty of flavor, great aroma, and no bite. Although it cakes easy, I would not use it for breaking in a new pipe for the aromatic may flavor the briar. I would recommend this to anyone regardless of their normal blend preferences?..just for fun.

When I write this review, I have actually used half a pot of Pennington Gap. The first thing to say is that I don't like it too much. At first, the reason I bought pennington gap was because I love Lakatia, but I want to have a different flavor and can be used separately, so as not to have only the aroma of Lakatia in my mouth all day, so I hope I can try bourbon-flavored tobacco. When I just opened the can, I was very satisfied with its rich aroma, but I felt that the smell was not very natural. I checked it on the Internet and found out that the source of the rich aroma is fragrance. When it is ignited, it actually tastes good, the aroma is still strong, but it also has a very thick sweetness, which is far more sweet than any tobacco I have used in the past, maybe it is because of cavendish, it is very sweet , I felt unhappy with the sweetness, and then I added a little Burley. The situation has improved significantly and it has become more relaxed, so that I can continue to enjoy the imitated bourbon fragrance. However, there is another problem with the pennington gap. The pipe is prone to overheating. Even if I breathe carefully and slowly, the pipe itself is still not easy to maintain the proper temperature. Perhaps it is because of my lack of skills. The cause of overheating must be cavendish itself. It is rich in sugar. In addition, pennington gap is also very easy to make me feel dizzy, and after burning, it produces a lot of tar and water vapor. I don’t know why, but I have used pure Burley, which contains higher nicotine. Never felt dizzy, guessing that it might be caused by fragrance. A Burley blend with heavy bourbon casing. Excellent cube cut that burns evenly when dried slightly, Gravity pack lightly or you will not get the proper draw. The burley gave me the typical sour flavors and the bourbon was just enough, but overall it was nothing to write home about. The nicotine punch was heavier than the flavor.

This is a medium to strong mixture. The Périque's presence is fair so it's not for people whom do not enjoy it. The Bourbon casing is beautiful, the BUs are very nutty and the CA bring some sweetness to a blend that is not overall sweet despite the Bourbon. Being Cube-cut BU, it burns slowly and does not bite if you don't puff like hell. This is a good example of a very high quality aromatic that does not smother the tobaccos' taste. If you enjoy high quality aromatics tasting like tobacco and do not fear a good dose of nicotine, Pennintong Gap might be just right for you.

This is a cousin to Barbary Coast but has bourbon as the main flavoring agent. It is not overpowering, but the granulated cut needs some drying time, and requires very minimal tamping in order to burn well. I don't like this as much as Barbary Coast, but it's good tobacco, and the flavor comes through nicely.

If one loves the smell of bourbon then this one is for you! Some sweetness from the bourbon topping and the black cavendish, but about mid way down the bowl that fades away and then you get the kick from the spiciness of the St. James perique. I was really suprised that this bourbon soaked smoke did not carry that taste all the way to the end but its probably best that the bourbon vanishes under the nutty and spicy tastes of the burley and perique. Overll a good smoke, not much taste for tall that bang you get when you open the tin, but over all a well balance C&D smoke that Ill revisit again.

You pop the top here on Grandma's Fruitcake soaked for days in Bourbon. Heady liquor aroma on top Fig Newtons, butter cookies, nuts and candied fruit. The bourbon is strong, but comes across in shades more like sweet red wine and Southern Comfort Liqueur. Moving in and out of the Nut-Cake-Whiskey-Raisin background, fleeting scents of peach, pear, grape, and especially banana - as Briarabbit put it in his review - Banana Pudding. (Amen, Brother! Nilla Wafers and all.) Another strange scent developed after the tin was open a few days, it was a fruity - yeasty aroma that reminded me of Flintstone's Chewable Vitamins, oddly pleasant.

Don't pack the cube cut too tight and it burns very well. Lighting up releases the bourbon flavor and the spice from the Perique and Cavendish. I swear for a moment I taste KFC Original Recipe's 11 herbs and spices, maybe this blend just makes me think of all things Kentucky.

In moments the bourbon is gone, and we're in cool, comforting Burley country. Always pleasant, nutty Burley, but this time it‘s haunted by the ghosts of the richer, spicier Perique and unflavored Cavendish. Wrapping up the bowl with over-roasted nuts and black pepper, with the slightest sweetness. The nicotine grows down the bowl to a decent kick at the bottom. If you didn't pack to tight, it will burn well to the heel.

I think this is an excellent flavored burley, sort of a gourmet chef's version the old American stand-by. That said, it's just not my favorite style. I give it 3-Stars for my humble opinion, but if you love good Burley or very light aromatics then consider it 4-Stars for sure.

Kentucky Cube Cut and Burley, rich Black Cavendish, all balance the flavor of Perique. Intense aroma and taste of bourbon. One more tobacco I bought from Israel, where fortunately the polite miss gladly sold them at lower prices, because they were old! Packed in 26-9-2007. I smoked 1-2 bowls as soon as I opened the tin. Afterwards I left it open for a little while to lose some of its humidity and intense aroma. The result was very good. No tongue bite at all. Sweet smoking. The tobacco should be gently pressed into the bowl in order not to be plugged. I was very impressed by the fact that I smoked 2 consecutive bowls without cleaning my pipe at all, and the balsa filter I used came out spotless!!! I wouldn't say it is an aromatic or that it behaves like one. I would classify this one under the Perique category.

A friend gifted me a tin of this just today. It is my first C&D blend. The tin was dated 4-14-09, so just a little over a year old. Upon opening the metal lid to the tin, I took a whiff of the tobacco and it smelled just like alcohol-soaked bananas - and VERY over the top. It also reminded me of very sweet bubble gum. "Oh, oh, where's the tobacco," I thought. It was also quite moist for the tobacco to have been 13 months old. You couldn't tell it was really cube cut Burley by the feel as all of the tobacco was very spongy. I loaded up a meer-lined briar and smoked a bowl. I have to say I was not impressed. Surprisingly, the strong tin note did not translate into the taste. As a matter of fact, there was no taste of it whatsoever. All I tasted was a spiciness that I attributed to the Perique, disagreeable at best, and thankfully, not all of the time. Not like what I am used to with Perique or Kentucky leaf. It actually made me a bit nauseous. Mostly, the experience was of smoking hot air - very boring and not enjoyable.

Now in all fairness, I will leave the lid off for a week at least to dry this some. I want the tin note to vanish as much as possible (hopefully all of it) in the hopes of bringing out some real tobacco flavor next time I smoke it. Until I dare try it again, only 2 stars. Not a good introduction for me to the C&D line. I almost wonder if I got a bad batch considering the many 3 and 4 star reviews for this tobacco.

UPDATE 9-3-10: No change from previous.

UPDATE 2-13-12: Looking for something different to smoke tonight after a long day of teaching which kept me on campus till nearly 10pm, I dug Pennington Gap out of a tobacco cabinet that consists of "hardly ever smoked" tobaccos. Although it had dried out considerably since its tinning from over 2 years ago, if given to me without prior knowledge I would say it was still quite fresh. It wasn't sticky to the touch, but stuck together with compression and a tad more springy. It still smelled of alcohol soaked bananas but not nearly as when first opened. In all fairness I would have to say it was like smoking hot air. Only the Perique made itself known from time to time with its spicy signature. There was a mild side-stream sweetness at times but not enough to satisfy. If there is any Burley - or Kentucky Burley for that matter - it has yet to make itself known to me. Now I am a lover of good Burley and smoke Aged Burley Flake, Burley Slice, and Edgeworth Sliced on a regular (daily) basis. The Burley in Pennington Gap is nowhere in the same league in my opinion. I know it is all about personal taste, but I just don't get all of the glowing reviews where the Burley is touted to be the holy grail here. I just can't see it, let alone taste it! Out of respect for my fellow pipe smokers I will hold to 2 stars, but personally, that's a stretch for me.

Now this is a great tobacco, albeit a decidedly weird one... It belongs in a bizarre, perique-drenched category all its own. At times, Pennington Gap fairly reeks of humid nights spent in a haunted bayou, savoring a glass of chilled bourbon while listening to the wildlife as it frolicks under a full moon. Alternately, it evokes images of sitting in the backyard under a blazing summer sin with a glass of iced tea in one hand and a good book in the other .... Either way, it's a seriously good time.

Pennington Gap is reminiscent in appearance and concept to G.L. Pease's Barbary Coast, only this blend is easy to light and burns smoothly all the way to the bottom of the bowl. It burns cool, doesn't bite at all, tastes naturally sweet, and it sings in pretty much any type of pipe I care to smoke it in. As the tin description indicates, the flavor seems to go back and forth between the burlies and perique, which is an interesting effect if you're smoking this at a time when you can really concentrate on the tobacco. The perique deserves special attention here, as for some reason this mixture really brings out that condimental leaf's fruity character and would serve as an ideal introduction to its charms.

The bourbon topping is heavily applied yet seems to actually cool the smoke, producing a flavor and texture akin to a chilled banana pudding. As a rule, though, I prefer to let the tin air out a few days. The flavoring seems to evaporate quickly, leaving behind a more natural taste that retains some of the cool mouthfeel. As good as this stuff is, however, I think of it exclusively as a summer blend -- I just can't seem to imagine smoking it much once the weather turns cold.

After years of smoking this, I'm still not sure whether to call Pennington Gap an "aromatic" or not. On the one hand, it's heavily sauced and has a noticeable amount of unsweetened cavendish. On the other hand, it doesn't behave like an aromatic at all. This is an exceptionally full blend, high in both nicotine and tobacco flavor (did I mention the PERIQUE?), which is hardly characteristic of aromatics. Also, the room note is unlikely to win you many friends -- it's pleasant enough, but pungent and quite strong.

I recommended this to anyone who likes, or thinks they like, perique. Otherwise, stay far away.

This is a decent blend that definitely differs from typical aromatics. There is a slight taste of Bourbon and a bit of woodiness but what you really taste is the Perique and burly. The blend has a good balance and lights as well as any tobacco I have ever tried. The casing does not foul up a pipe, and is very light. There is a bit of a kick from the Perique but it is most evident in the tin note, which is almost of rotting fruit.

Upon opening the tin, you really get the smell of bourbon....much different from their Blockade Runner which does not smell like rum at all. The tobacco is rather moist, so it needs to be aired out somewhat to prevent gurgling. It is mostly black in color with a few brownish bits mixed in. Puts off a lot of smoke, very nice room aroma and flavor ....not of bourbon, but of caramel. About halfway thru the bowl, the bourbon burns off and you can begin to taste the burley. It burns cool with no tongue bite at all.

A unique biphasic flavor experience....I think it deserves 3, if not 4 stars.

Because of the reviews that compared Pennington Gap to Barbary Coast (my current fave), I decided to try this blend. Thanks, fellow reviewers! This is a great blend, fuller than BC, but a bit more "touched" by the bourbon casing than BC's brandy. For me, the difference is the same as whether I'm in the mood for brandy or bourbon. Generally I prefer the brandy, but bourbon is nice for a change of pace. I'll have to get more of this!

This is a pretty interesting blend. Sir Craig has done this well. On opening, the tin aroma is amazing, and when you pinch a bunch of the cubed cut, it almost feels wet. I lay it out on a piece of waxed paper, and an hour later, it hasn't seemed to dry out much at all! I s'pose the lesson here is that this just isn't cased, it's drenched! And yet, it lights fairly well, and stays lit a lot better than I'd have thought. This is one of those occasional aromatics for those who don't usually favor them. Not at all an all-day blend for me, but it's a nice change of pace every so often. Not a bad biter for an aromatic either. It's just a neat, sweet-ish blend that isn't at all cloying. I'm surprised by some of you guys on your descriptions of the room note. I think it's outstanding. Just enough perique to pique your interest, and the black cav mellows out the burley. This is pretty neat stuff. Three stars.

Just as KFC claims to do chicken right, C & D knows how to mix bourbon whiskey in its pipe blend without overpowering. I generally hate booze and tobacco blends, as I?ve stated in other reviews. They?re exotic gimmicks, and you can?t taste the tobacco or the booze because they both tend to compete with rather than compliment each other. PG gets it right, and quite perfectly. This is a classic American cube cut burley without any bite and a grand whiskey, almost maple flavor. The Perique is evident though not overwhelming. It reminds me a little of the style of Canal Boat, though PG is much more interesting. Unlike Wilke?s Nut Brown Burley, which hurts my tongue, I never have this problem with PG. It?s a long smoke, perfect after dinner; cool, even burning and delightful. Even if you don?t like aromatics, you?d have difficulty not enjoying this one. More great quality from C & D right down to the tin art.

Four of five stars ------------------- update 2006 ------------------- Still great, though give it a few days to dry out. The pebble cut makes it sticky and wet, and the true tastes will not be fully revealed to you. At first shot, I thought Tarler was putting in that same crap he uses to poison the newly revised Strathspey. However, after a few days it got good again, and this is one I'll want to try several more tins before reaching a definitive consensus.

Four and a quarter of five stars ---------------------------------- Update 2007 ---------------------------------- Unlike Strathspey and other C & Ds, PG actually improved tremendously. Sometimes Craig Tarler decides to add rather than subtract from his blends. As other reviewers here have observed, C & D is not consistent in their blending style or quality control. In this case, Craig must've been hittin' the moonshine a little heavier one night and actually introduced a more generous dram of Kentucky bourbon into the mix. The result is a heavenly hash of flavors and genuinely earthy aromas. This is currently my favorite burley/perique blend; stuff to smoke all day. Please Mr. Tarler, don't change perfection, you've already achieved it.

This is a unique blend. The cubed burley is pretty good here. The accent of spicy Perique combined with the bourbon topping give you a great sweet/spicy combo. I smoke mostly English blends at this point. But this has a place in my rotation. It's really hard to describe this blend. Try it if you are looking for something different.

After Haunted Bookshop, I almost swore off burleys...Being a new Pipe smoker and perhaps not having the knowledge or experience I am acquiring. So I tried Pennington Gap with some hesitation- I was soo pleasantly surprised. Opening the can you get a great smell of Figs or raisins- a nice sweet smell. Also you can detect very faintly in the background the smell of the boubon topping. Lighting up, after the charring light, there is a wonderful full smokey sweet taste and some great spicy perique finish as you finish your exhale. I can't do it justice in words. Its a great sitting on your porch smoke Or taking a long drive. But not what I would take on a work break. It a slow burner due to the cubed burley, I would put aside some time.

Man, I had high hopes when I ordered this stuff....I couldn't wait for it to get to me. I opened the tin, took a sniff, and thought I was in for the bourbon tobacco experience of a lifetime.....

What a letdown! All I got a taste of was the Burley, and Granger does Burley better. At about 1/4 the price.

I bought a tin of this blend based on its description, looking for a suitable blend for a dessert smoke. I was not in any way disappointed. Opening the tin brought forth a delicious aroma imparted by the bourbon, just a little candy-like, with a decided hint of alcohol. The cut is very chunky, a style that for me took some getting used to. That accomplished, I found it to be a cool, sweet, nutty smoke that completely satisfied my expectations, and with a pleasant room aroma to boot. Although too sweet for me to use as a frequent or everyday smoke, Pennington Gap is a superb blend for relaxing with after a meal, with a good cup of tea or coffee. Delightful.

A very nice surpise! As close to an ideal Aromatic for non-Aromatic smokers as I have tried. The only drawback is the room note is rather strong. Not bad, just strong. A very nice change of pace when I don't have time to load and smoke a flake-type tobacco. I would not have recognized the Burley component as such. It is very smooth and gives the blend some strength without any trace of bitterness. Highly recommended and very tasty too!

Sometimes my taste seems to differ radically from that of some esteemed ASPers... I truly hated this tobacco! I was expecting something similar to Barbary Coast (cubed burley, booze topping, perique...), but how wrong I was! The tin aroma is something to die for: like bananas doused in good bourbon... very sweet, strongly alcoholic. I have never smelled so much alcohol in a tobacco! This, together with the high wetness of the tobacco and the presence of cavendish, made my mouth drool but also my brain to worry a bit. After all, Barbary Coast is much subtler when you first approach it by sniffing the opened tin. It was so moist that the paper in the tin was all heavily stained! Quite weird for a C&D product, maybe they messed up this batch? Anyway, the tobacco seemed to take fine to the light and burn well. Actually, in spite of the wetness and the alcohol, the burning rate was slow and regular, producing a cool smoke. But then where's the problem? The problem lies in taste: I find it watery, uninteresting, unsurprising. The burley is never as nutty as in Barbary Coast or other C&D blends, it just tastes like hot air. You can't even feel much of the alcoholic scent that is so evident in the tin! It's just a weak, "empty" smoke (maybe due to the Cavendish?), with some of the heavy notes which are so typical of Perique (and I don't like too much Perique!) and some hints of sweetness. Boring!

Very nuce stuff. Hints of bourbon with a touch of perique complement the burley. This was a little dry, but then I have decided that this is the way all C&D products come or they dry Colorado atmosphere gets through the tin seal. I add a few drops of water. Burns easily and cleanly. Yum!!!

My absolute favorite aromatic tobacco that I have smoked thus far. This comes as no surprise given my affinity for bourbon whiskeys. The initial tin aroma smells strongly of bourbon - possibly strong enough to put some off. However, the burn is not accelerated. Instead, it burns steadily and evenly, giving off a wonderful aroma. The taste itself is unique - extremely satisfying, full and sweet. It's extremely relaxing - best suited for when one has the time to enjoy it (or rather when one doesn't have the time, but would like to get one's thoughts in order). It seems to get better with every tasting. The perique, burley and cavendish complement each other almost perfectly - each picking up where the others leave off. This is an absolute must try, to say the least.

This is a wonderful blend. It's one of my favorites; up there with Haddo's Delight, Barbary Coast (which is very similar), Escudo Navy Deluxe, and some of the Wm. Serad line. I like VA and/or burley with Perique and especially when topped off with some type of liquor. Pennington Gap is sweet, but not artificially so. It is aromatic, but not overly so. It is eminently satisfying, but does not bite. It has body and adequate strength, but it is not harsh. I give this blend an "A".

I must admit, the more I try the Cornell & Diehl blends, the more I become a fan. I've already added Frog Morton Bayou, Mississippi Mud, Cross Eyed Cricket to the rotation, with the sole exception of Canal Boat not quite meeting my tastes. That was a disappointment, as I was hoping to add a mild burley (besides a Captain Black type) to my collection. I've read the reviews here for this one, so decided to try it out, and was pleased from the start. I didn't get that green taste I often detect in a burley blend, and the dark fullness reminded me of a mellow slightly sweet coffee, with perique adding some spice. This brand is pretty expensive in my area of the woods, almost 15.00 a tin (ouch) but I don't regret the experiment, and have foumd a perfect after dinner smoke, particularly when sitting outside on the porch. The one caveat, it smokes a lot stronger when in a moving car, etc, and the extra heat seems to make the nicotine effect a lot stronger, even with a cap on the pipe. However, that's my experience with it.

I do not have the time to describe the attributes of this tobacco in detail as others do. However, as I do wish to contribute some feedback, I will simply rate this tobacco on a scale of 1 ?10, including tenths.

Absolutlely a great tobacco with nice flavor and extremely good burning qalitites, no doubt due to its fine cut. I rate this tobacco 9.9 out of 10. You can't miss with this offering from C&D!

Appearance: Cube cut, fairly small and uniform size. About 50% dark, 50% medium brown colors. Quite moist for a C&D offering. I had to let it dry out bfore packing it.

Aroma: Opening the can releases an almost overpowering sweet and boozy aroma. After it dries a bit, some burley nose appears, although the booze seems to predominate.

Packing: While still moist, it can easily overpack. When dried properly (for my taste)it packs easily into any size bowl.

Lighting: Lighting is the usual two match affair. Not too slow or too fast to catch.

Initial flavor: To me, this tastes like Borkum Riff original. Way too sweet, and too much of the Bourbon. Much sweeter than Barbary Coast, which I like.

Mid-bowl: There is some tobacco flavor as it burns into the middle part of the smoke, but I still find the flavoring way too dominant. Burns cool and dry for an aromatic. (There, I said it. It's an aromatic, nothing but an aromatic).

Finish: Not much change at the end. It left the pipe dry and clean, and surprisingly little of the aroma lingers

Summary: No place in my rotation. There are other Burley based blends much more to my taste. This is probably the lowest rating I've ever given to a C&D product.

I purchased a tin of this at Campbell's Smoke Shop in East Lansing, Michigan. He must not sell a lot of tinned tobacco, because there was a pretty thick cover of dust on the lid of the can I purchased. I made the purchase on the strength of the reviews on this site. I was not disappointed.

Others have lauded the virtues of this fine blend so well that that there is little that I can add. It is pleasant to the eye. Its fragrance in the tin is rich and pleasant. I find the components unusual: Burley, Black Cavendish, Perique!, AND Bourbon. The blender did exceptiona work in conceiving and bleding this fine tobacco.

It is a delight to smoke. I rated it "I smoke this on occasion." only because at $10.00 per 2 oz. tin locally I will cannot afford enjoy it more often than an occasional treat. Pennngton Gap and MacBaren's Burley London Blend, though quite different,share one common denominator: they are two exceptional Burley based blends. I recommend them both.

Beautiful aroma in the tin, like berries of some kind.

First Smoke: First puffs are only the slightest bit sweet. There is a dry, astringent smoky taste that is probably the bourbon topping. I don't think I particularly care for it. If the underlying blend were slightly sweeter it would be better. Later in the smoke the flavor becomes somewhat sweeter and the bourbon smokiness lessens to bare detectibility.

Second smoke. Less smoky-bourbony this time and sweeter. Nice and sweet, gorgeous virginia flavor. You may ask why I said "virginia". Well to me this tastes like it has Virginias in it. Perhaps it's the Kentucky that tastes that way. Anyway this is a keeper.

If you're averse to booze-flavored tobaccos, don't be put off by the presence of bourbon here. This is a very well-put-together cubed burley blend. As with most C&D/Serad/Pease burley blends, it has a slightly "green" taste to it. This mostly gives way to the classic burley nutty flavor by halfway but never completely vanishes; the Perique keeps things lively, while the Bourbon-cased cavendish adds a bit of body and subtle sweetness.

Cool-burning, tasty, and bite-free, this is an ideal tobacco for breaking in new pipes, and the cube cut makes it well-suited for pipes with wide bowls, such as Savinelli Autographs. Were it not for the "green" taste, this could be an all-day smoke for me.

This one has a very crumbly, cube-cut texture which makes it a very even burner, and it smokes dry and clean to the bottom for me - in this respect outdoing its cousin Cross-Eyed Cricket, although CEC has a more flavorful taste. There's a noticeable bourbon flavor which gives it a unique smell, but which isn't overpowering at all in the smoke. Perique is noticeable, and the burley rounds out the offbeat flavor to a very enjoyable finish. This is an understated tobacco for me... When I first tried it, my reaction was muted, but with each subsequent smoke it has become better and better.

The perique is evident in the tin note, but rather than foot odor, it's coming across more musty -- probably modified by the aromatics, which don't smell like anything I could describe, other than to call them strange and sweet. I do pick out what I'd describe as cocoa, or something similar. Same in the smoke, I'm getting cocoa, and then something strangely musty and sweet, maybe even slightly fetid (but somehow not in a terrible way). Definitely wouldn't call it bourbon. Someone mentioned raisinettes, and though it's been probably 30 years since I've had them, that somehow seems fitting. Funny how finding a box to fit something into can change your perception of it; maybe now I'm getting a little "malted milk ball".

I don't really know what to think about this one. Before making the association to some candies from my childhood, it wasn't making much sense, but now it's kind of growing on me. Definitely isn't your standard cherry/chocolate/vanilla aromatic. Not overly sweet, or wet and sticky. I don't know if it'll make it into regular rotation, but I'd probably miss it when it's gone.

Despite typically being a Virginia based smoker, as well as having had my ass handed to me by C&D’s Burley Flake blends, this has quickly become one of my favorites. The burleys are perhaps slightly green but behave themselves with the black cavendish holding the reigns while the perique adds a good deal of spice and stewed fig. The bourbon topping is prevalent throughout the smoke and is really enjoyable. This is one of those aromatics that tastes exactly how it smells.

I bought this one because the mix Perique, Burley, Black Cavendish caught my eye. Never had that mix before so let's go for it.

Opening the tin I was almost overwhelmed by the aroma coming out of it. Super intense, my brain fired: dark chocolate, dried fruits but surprisingly not much of bourbon - which is totally fine in my book. Nice dark blend with the - for me - rather unfamiliar cube cut, a bit moist but this did not stop me to try it immediately.

Packs easy, takes light easy - and WOW what a super rich and satisfying smoke! Nice Perique characteristic, nutty, aromatic, sweet. Got to get more of that stuff with the next order. It adds a nice contrast to my usual VarPer and European Aromatics rotation. Did not taste anything similar so far... but then always keep exploring

I received a tin from 2010 in a recent trade. The age had treated in well for an aromatic blend. Tin note is fruity bourbon.

I packed a cob and lit it and got a definite fruit topping and the bourbon. Sipped like a bourbon it provides a good smoke with little bite. The retro was sort of a banana nut bread to me.

Nic was fairly high and I definitely felt it by the end of the bowl..

Not sure how it would be fresh.

I've smoked this one for a few years exclusively,I loved it from the very first time my match hit the top of my bowl.The smell of this blend to me is fruity,which i find odd seeing that it doesnt have any fruit topping.It comes fairly moist but lights well and normally have to relight a time or two.All the ingredients blend so well with this tobacco,and the burley is right up front!I always have some on hand.

Bulk: Being packed in a bag, it was quite dry with no really strong aroma. Dark brown.

Taste & Aroma: Nice woodsy sour quality.

Nicotine: Mild-medium

Overall: The sour aspect is something to experience in this burley-perique blend, but Bayou Morning Flake is considerably stronger, although BMF is a VAPER. 3.0 stars.

This is a nice blend that definitely needs to be dried out so to enjoy its qualities most fully. A very nice sweetish aroma mixed in with some nuttiness. It burns well after drying and produces a moderate volume of smoke. I found a chunk of stem which looked look a piece of mulch in my 2oz tin...C&D has some quality control problems as others have noted before. The perique hangs in the background but raises its head from time to time, not overpowering. All in all a nice bourbon cased burley but with little depth.

First off, I noticed the tin was not well filled. There should have been more tobacco. Upon smelling this blend, I find it smells like bubble gum. It's not bad, it's just somewhat overwhelming. This certainly smokes better than how it smells in the can, but it won't be something I'll try again. I prefer the G.L. Pease Barbary Coast blend to this. UPDATE: After some aging, i like this much more than I initially did. It dried out a little and that sweet bubble gum smell subsided. This now gets a third star from me.

This stuff smelled awesome upon opening the tin.

I believe the actual smoking experience gets better with age. The first smoke was hard to get lit and tasted somewhat flat. After letting it sit several months, I tried it again and was quite pleased with the flavor. It did taste somewhat more like it smelled after some aging.

This would be a good occasional smoke, but I would not consider it an "all-day" smoke.

I really like this. Smells great in the tin and in the rooms. Fairly consistent burn but it does tend to smoke a bit wet for me. I have taken to smoking it in a smallish Savinelli with the balsa filter and that's helped with the moisture. I stopped just short of "highly recommended" because I tend to cotton mouth when I smoke it. I thought it might go away after a while but I've burned through a couple of ounces and it still gets me unless I smoke it real slow (something I'm not good at). I'll definately buy more of this.

This blend basically tastes like every other blend of whiskey flavored burley, the only exception being that this one doesn't bite. It whiskey flavored tobacco is your thing, you'll probably enjoy it. It's rather dry and rough cut and causes no dottle in the heal of your pipe.

C&D best mixture I tried till now. More complex then "regular" aromatics. This is the 1st tobacco I tried that gives aroma while smoking better then when smelled in the tin. Not strong, mild, doesn't bite. One annoying thing though: a little itchy in the throat, I gave it evantually 3 stars because of that irritation.

Very similar to Barbary Coast but fuller, with greater body. Pennington Gap has a "stewed fruit" quality, a little less nuttiness and, I think, a little less of Perique's tang. The difference is essentially a matter of style-- both are among the best Burley's around. If you like one, you simply have to try the other.

Pennington Gap is my personal favorite... by a nose.

INTOXICATING!!!When you need a change from Latakia this is the blend to turn to.A very enchanting blend,full of aroma and taste. The Bourbon is pleasant and actually quite sweet.Sweet-not cloying! If you like Canal Boat, which contains Latakia I think you will be impressed by its Perique-Bourbon cousin-Pennington Gap.It actually does have a bannana pudding smell to it! 4 of 4 stars!

Something about topped cube-cut burley blends doesnt agree with my palate. They simply taste like slightly sour hot air to me. While I can recognize that this is a good blend, it simply doesnt do it for me. Still, its a well made natural aromatic and I would recommend it to those looking for such a tobacco.

On the quest for some lighter aromatics (partially to avoid stinking up the house in the winter), I stopped at this one. Not as complex to me as Barbary coast (BC is for when I want to take the time to appreciate it) but as others have pointed out, similar.

Now I find myself reaching for it when I think I want something sweet, and am always surprised to remember that great tobacco taste. Great blending -- topping is just right, and perique just enough to make me think that maybe I really don't dislike perique after all. a change of pace that's easy to like.

Now here is a blend perfect for relaxing with in the recliner or outside on the patio after a satifying meal. Add a cup of cofee or a glass of Iced tea and the experience can be sublime.

Pennington Gap is an interesting smoke and well worth a try, if only as a change-of-pace smoke. Like a few others, I didn't think the ingredients would suit me too well but, like the reviewer "Pipestud" I was pleasantly surprised by this blend. To me, Perique is nicer in smallish doses and PG fits that description well. Also, the very fine cut and excellent light/burn characteristics make this especially nice in pipes with smaller bowls, like the 3 or 4 Stanwell "Sixtus" pipes I have. In a Sixtus #211 or #212 this gets me almost exactly from my driveway to my parking place at work with a nice, easy "wake-up" smoke and, for that talent, I'll gladly recommend trying it and give it three solid stars.

This is the first aromatic tobacco I've smoked whose tin aroma actually translates into the same intensity of flavor on the palate. It's not the same flavor, necessarily, but the sweetness of this blend really comes through. The tin says there is some Perique, but I didn't taste it much. I like the cube cut, which resulted in a nice even burn and required very few relights. I'd have rated it higher but for the relatively mild flavor which doesn't take into account my abused taste buds. Good stuff, though.

This one of my favorite c and d blends! I am not normally drawn to a tobacco of the kind that is described on the tin but I figured I would try it based on the fact that alot of people who don't normally like aromatics like this. It is smooth and full of good flavor. Thankfully the topping just sat happily in the back and was actually a nice enhancement to the rest of the blend. The perique in this blend is a nice addition and while it gives this blend some life it does not overwhelm. Good stuff!
