As this is Mountain Pass in bulk, I'm essentially repeating my review of MP. A sugary black and golden cavendish aromatic with a creamy, buttery vanilla custard flavor. By intent, you won’t get much tobacco taste here, except for a touch of honey and grass from the gold cavendish, and light nuts, earth, and wood from the burley. Coarse cut with some ribbon, and lightly moist, the entrancing aroma from the tin translates well to what you experience when you smoke it. Has little nicotine. The strength is mild, while the taste level is a step past the center of mild to medium. Won't bite or get harsh. Burns clean and cool with a rich consistency of sweet taste from start to finish. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has very pleasant lightly lingering after taste and room notes. It is an all day smoke. It somewhat reminds me of Boston Cream Pie with a little extra chocolate.

I've been smoking Vanilla Custard for nearly 2 years now. It's not just a crowd pleaser...this is some ridiculously good stuff, and is a go-to aromatic for me. The tin note is amazingly creamy vanilla, and it does not disappoint in the pipe. To say this has the aroma and taste of cookie dough or cake would be accurate. If you like sweet flavorful aromatics which smell and taste like dessert, you don't want to miss this one.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Vanilla Custard - Z92.

This is one of those blends that's so indulgent the fear of weight gain arises after a bowl!

The coarse cut mix (with more brown Cavendish than black) smells decadent beyond belief, it screams vanilla custard! To be fair, even though the nose made me expect a blend that felt heavily cased, and wet, there's no issue there.

That word again: indulgent. That could be the review! The topping in this rules the flavour, leaving little space for many tobacco nuances. Sure, there's some of the usual Cavendish traits, but these have nowhere near as much volume to them as the vanilla. The burn from it's without fault, as is the temperature: cool. The texture of the smoke's quite heavy, but I can't see people minding that as it smells great! And finally, the nicotine suits me for an afternoon aromatic: very mild.

Vanilla Custard: makes it into my rotation! Four stars:

Highly recommended.

This is my favourite aromatic so far. It is rich - the bag smell was eggy custard, with rich vanilla. Smoke tastes the way it smelled - sweet, rich, dessert. Great for after dinner, late night smoke. Left a white ash, no dottle, and barely a smokey leftover taste in the mouth. No need to brush after this one! Also nice thick smoke.

I have to admit, vanilla isn't (by itself) a flavor I normally care for in an aromatic. Many are either too one-note, boring, or chemical-tasting for my taste. Some suffer a combination of two traits or even all three. However, since I sell this stuff, I figured I better try some to be able to (somewhat) intelligently discuss it with customers. To my surprise, the custard aspect really elevates this beyond just another run-of-the-mill vanilla pipe tobacco. While I have not yet had a chance to try the Mac vanilla cream, I'm not exactly running to it after having tasted this. This is super-sweet stuff, but I have a sweet tooth, so when the mood strikes me, that isn't a problem. And while I'm sure it has PG or some agent to keep it moist, and isn't heavy enough to ruin the taste for me. It's also pretty fun to open the jar at the store, because the smell (which is quite pleasant) just swarms the room, and just about everyone who smells it has a look on his/her face like a kid having just discovered the big candy treat at the bottom of a Christmas stocking. Sure, it isn't for everyone, but I can't think of a single pipe tobacco which suits every single person. If you don't care much for aromatics, run the other way. If you do like aromatics, at least take a whiff. We only started selling this stuff about 4-5 weeks ago, and already have trouble keeping it in stock.

Let me begin by stating that I like vanilla topping in my aromatic blends. Vanilla Custard is VANILLA! I don't smoke VC daily but.when I crave a sweet creamy mild smoke its my go to blend. No rough edges on this smoke its as smooth as glass. The flavor remains consistent throughout the bowl with no bitterness on the bottom. I've found VC pairs exceptionally well with hot black coffee and ice cold dark Mexican beer.lf you love vanilla aromatics as I do VC is a must try blend. If not I caution you to stay far, far away.

I get more of a butterscotch than vanilla flavor here. This is heavily cased and heavily PG'd, to excess, way overboard. I know PG isn't suppose to have a flavor, but it has a mouth-feel or something because after a certain point it spoils the tobacco & experience (and most of the Sutliffs I've tried have been this way). For vanilla lovers I'd suggest Mac Baren Vanilla Creme or Capt Black Gold (Lane MV1000 in bulk).

Not sure about the vitriol in the reviews for this tobacco, or why reviews on this website tend to be significantly lower for all tobaccos compared to other site, for that matter.

It smells delicious in the bag--my stomach started growling. Perfectly cut, perfect amount of moisture. No bite. Flavor while smoking is a deep, cooked/lightly burned vanilla flavor. At times was reminiscent of old fashioned kettle corn. Creamy, thick smoke that surround your head and hinders your vision.

Great stuff. So far, my favorite vanilla-based tobacco.

My review is based on a free pouch sample I received along with a recent tobacco order. I originally asked to have this blend added for review and described it as a coarse cavendish cut with some black. After fingering through the pouch I noticed a bit of ribbon and some partially broken flakes (very minimally on both counts). The first thing noticed upon opening the pouch was a very pleasing, but strong buttery-vanilla aroma. The use the term “buttery” first since that was very overwhelming, however, after lighting, there is no true butter-like flavor. There is a very prominent but pleasing vanilla taste throughout and a bit candy-like. It was very different from other vanillas I have smoked over the years. I would have preferred the buttery aspect that I noticed in the pouch aroma to translate more in the taste.

I suspect that due to the very strong, sweet-tasting vanilla, there was little hint of tobacco flavor. There was no bite throughout the entire smoke, and only a minimum of moisture/gurgle present while smoking. Surprisingly, with the very prominent vanilla casing, I expected more moisture along with a hot, bite-y smoke. As stated, there was none. There was some chemical taste as the bowl progressed along with an ammonia-like smell to the burning tobacco. This smell was most evident after putting the pipe down for a bit and smelling the wafting smoke. In spite of this, it was not much of a turn-off. As the bowl progressed it became a bit bitter, but without harshness to the mouth or throat. For those aromatic-exclusive smokers, you would be hard pressed to find a better vanilla. As such, easily a 3 star smoke. For those like myself, if you want more of a tobacco flavor in your smoke along with some cased aromatic flavoring, Mac Baren does it better with their Vanilla Cream and Honey Chocolate blends, as does Dan Pipe with their Milonga. That being the case, my personal rating for Vanilla Custard is 2 stars. For those who want a more natural tobacco experience, this one will not suit you and therefore I would not recommend this blend for that group. An on occasion smoke for me at best.

I should learn to read all of the reviews posted and take then at face value. I would have never tried this tobacco if I based it on the overall rating, I might have, never tried this tobacco, and that would be a crime. If you are an aromatic lover, then try this, if not move on - don't try it, and don't review it. I don't skew the numbers by reviewing English blends - I just don't have a taste for them.

The pouch note was well, vanilla custard. The pouch note carried over into the taste, subtle but very vanilla, The moisture level was about right and it burned well with few relights. A very cool smoke with no hint of bite. The is a mild , all day smoke and would be a very good tobacco for beginners

"Doc, my head hurts real bad every time I hit myself in the noggin with a hammer." "Well, sir, then don't do that anymore."

I love reviewers who start by writing that they hate this kind of smoke, then proceed to tell us how much they hated it.

If you like aromatics, then smoke them. This one, in my book, is one I'll continue to have on hand. Very pleasant in the bowl, and in the room. The vanilla custard aroma in the bag is delicious, with a definite dairy/cream note that is enticing. Flavors live up to the name, with occasional almond/amaretto tones on the palette and the room note. Every once in a while I get a faint hint of ammonia in the sinuses, but very light and not unpleasant.

I like this one mixed 50/50 with Sutliff Buttered Rum, that's dessert with a nice Brazilian Morgiana estate coffee roasted to just past first crack.

Sutliffe Vanilla Custard Z-92 We all have an inner child breathing within us. Even those of us who look to strong English or Balkans or who smoke only natural tobaccos have this inner child inside us. And sometimes dammit, that little bastard screams, pouts and throws a tantrum for a sweet vanilla dessert. And if that inner child also has behavioral problems and hyperactivity disorder, he'll seek out Sutliffe Vanilla Custard.

To say this is heavily topped is the understatement of the century. Whatever tobacco is there is unrecognizable, heavily laden with something that tastes exactly like a rich, slow-baked vanilla custard. Rich. Sweet. Tooth-rotting delicious. Intense. This may be the most heavily flavored tobacco I've ever smoked. And yes, it's wonderful.

Go, you purists back to your G&H flakes, your Peas Maltese Falcon, your 965 or whatever "pure" tobaccos you like... but when that inner child starts flipping out from lack of sweets, try a bowl of this. But do yourself a favor. Smoke this in a throwaway pipe, or a cobb or a meer that is used exclusively for vanilla flavored tobaccos.

Mechanically this behaves like any heavily topped, PG-laden mess. It is soaking wet from the humectants/PG, it hisses, it gurgles and at the end leaves a horrid goopy mess in the bottom of the bowl. Drying the tobacco beforehand only somewhat mitigates the problem. I found this to require a typical number of relights for a heavily topped aero. Slow smoking cadence and gentle puffing are essential for enjoyment of Sutliffe Vanilla Custard. BTW, I bought this from P&C during a 20% off sale on Sutliffe bulk. At $1.68/ounce, it was a bargain.

Nicotine? Uh...no. Full, rich, sweet vanilla and a room note that will give your housemates the munchies? In spades. Pack it loosely, puff it slowly and you might really enjoy this. I did, which is why despite its numerous drawbacks, I'm giving this a solid 4/4 stars. Highly recommended for aero lovers and for stodgy traditionalists who want to indulge that inner child.

This is a boy's tobacco. There's nothing wrong with that. At the same time, it's also a grandpa's tobacco, but he's a bland, boring, and somehow wholly ingratiating grandpa.

This is aromatic tobacco taken to its logical extreme. It's all aromatic, virtually no tobacco. It smells wonderful in the pouch. You almost want to keep it in the pouch and keep your pouch nearby. Smoking Sutliff Vanilla Custard doesn't produce much of an effect on the smoker. You'll barely realize that your pipe is lit. Puff, my sons. Puff to your heart's content. This won't bite your tongue. Not even if you give it a reason to.

You'll barely taste a thing, but, boy howdy, will anyone and everyone around tell you how good your pipe smells. Compliments? Yes. Any lingering taste or nicotine? No.

Not that there's anything wrong with with a tobacco like this. I'm not saying there's anything right with it, either.

I really wanted to like this blend...I enjoy tobaccos across the board, in search of a "dessert" like occasional smoke I expected this one to be sweet and heavily cased from the reviews I've read. P&c lists it as a top selling aro..it arrived and did not diss appoint the smell permeated the entire box like vanilla cake batter. I excitedly packed a bowl and the first light was terrific. This is what I was looking for a bulk I can grab a few on ounces of and pull out on those occasions when I get a "sweet tooth" with a good cup of coffee in the evening...as I relight my elation was torn from me before I even knew what happened.,I was hit by a horrible chemical taste mixed with ash like I was cleaning the inside of my bowl with my tongue. I press on and begin the pipe smokers checklist of self doubt I'm smoking too hot, to fast packed it too tight in my eagerness etc. you know the thoughts. I spend the rest of the bowl chasing that first taste like a crackhead chasing his first high, and while I get wisps of cool creamy smoke every so often, they are few and fleeting...no tobacco flavor, no vanilla, no cool creamy smoke,. About as pleasant as having a sweaty butthole all day. It needs to be fixed it your all dressed up and in public there's nothing you can do about it. I smoked close to an ounce in several pipes treating it like many of my aros leaving it in the ziploc bag it came in to "dry" a bit before storing it properly. I packed it light smoked half bowls but the result was the same every time.. Rancid chemical smoke with a room note that turned sour as quick as the bowl. Maybe I'll sprinkle it under the seat of my car and use it as an air freshener.. And although it's probably my ph I can't recommend anyone share in this experience... I'll press on to find another...

Summary: everything you want from an aromatic, with a small amount of wetness as the price for enduring flavor.

Those of you who categorically hate aromatics should just skip this review; I am agnostic on aromatics, thinking that most of them are pretty bad, but open to those that are good. Paradoxically, this allows me to select the best. The skinny is that "Vanilla Custard Z92" is a good-but-goopy aromatic. That is, the rich vanilla flavor and scent, like a cream soda and Yankee Candle at the same time, endures through the entirety of the bowl, and the implements that imparted it like alcohols and sugars take a backseat to this immense, buttery, sugary, and warm vanilla flavor. It reminds me of the Sutliff "Dark Decadence" but with less rum and maple, and more pure vanilla goodness, making the room smell like fresh-baked sugar cookies. However, I would recommend not smoking this one straight; mix it 60-40 with the Burley mixture of your choice and you will end up with something tasty. I used "Cotton Boll Twist" and ended up with a blend that makes people swoon for its room note, produces a kissable beard note, and yet can keep me awake even through CSPAN. This nice roast Burley Cavendish makes for a good smoke on its own, but is a bit too goopy, so I'd cut it with something -- if you haven't tried Ohm "Natural," this is the time -- for a fantastic smoke that any aromatic fan and most non-aromatic fans can appreciate.

I like aromatics and decided to try some Vanilla Custard. Sutliff is a premium brand and the results reflect that. A very smooth smoke with few lights needed, and a true vanilla aroma and flavor. I once tried Mac Barren's Vanilla Flake and got a horrible tongue bite. This one will not bite, and is now my all day smoke. The room note is incredible. If you like a good vanilla aromatic, or are just curious, give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.

This has way too much humectant. My pouch was incredibly old as it’s been at my B&M tobacconist for years, and was still moist and sticky! The pouch isn’t even sealed internally so no natural substance could behave this way. I still packed a bowl and I should have known better from my opening experience. The pouch note is amazing so I had to try it. I honestly can’t taste anything besides the tinge of the PG. The bowl sizzled and crackled as I lit it! I cant even hardly smell the room note through all the chemical laden smoke. Burns hot but it doesn’t bite... I still dumped out the last half of the bowl. I will echo an earlier review and if you want vanilla done right try some Mac Baren products. What a waste of my time and money! I won’t be fooled or intrigued by another Sutliff product. Leaves the aftertaste of mothballs.

The tin note, the room note, the flavor, everything. It is very rich to the point of being nauseating. The worst part about it is that the room note lingers, I can come back an hour later and still smell it. I enjoy most aromatics, but this is one that I cannot recommend.

This blend has the same artificial chemical taste as found in the bargain brand bagged tobaccos one would find at a Walgreens. I strongly suspect this is due to the amount of humectant used.

While the vanilla flavor is present, it is not enough to overcome the artificial flavor. It can only be described as cheap flavored tobacco that has no business being sold as a premium smoke.

Vanilla Custard is everything you would think of by the name. Great tin note (although I bought this is bulk), great flavor that lingers long into the pipe smoking, and a matching room note to boot. Revised review: After having this tobacco resting in a jar for six months I tried it again and was very pleasantly surprised. Though it does have the strong added flavor, it has mellowed a bit and was much more pleasant to smoke than when new. I will be smoking this occasionally for a change of taste from English-style tobaccos.

This is a good example of why a tobacco that makes a bad first impression should be kept and allowed to rest in storage for a while before making a final judgment about it.

Original review: A bit too strongly flavored for me. Leaves a lot of deposits in the pipe bowl.

For me, this was a good tobacco for helping me to learn how to taste pipe tobacco, and to properly light a bowl of tobacco. It's great for that because the strong flavor makes it easy to sense when I've used too much flame and overly charred the tobacco, and the sweet flavor is so strong that it makes it easy to sense when I'm getting a good vanilla flavor.

But for better or worse, I've found that I prefer less assertively flavored tobaccos. I have had the same experience with Boswell Berry Cobbler and Raspberry Cream: Helpful to learn from but just not my cup of tea for smoking regularly thereafter.

A quality product and I can recommend it for someone looking for the stronger flavor. I highly recommend it because it is what it is claimed to be: a full flavored vanilla aromatic.

Technique notes: My smoking technique is to focus only on smoking. No reading or work or other distractions. Just enjoying the smoke. Outdoors only. A few bowls per week of pipe smoking. Lightly charring the tobacco initially and with relights. Sipping. Occasional retrohale. Peterson pipe lighter with smallest practical flame. Sometimes a BIC EZ Reach lighter.

Am using a variant of the Frank method to pack a 2/3 full pipe without first putting loose tobacco in the bowl. I just take a wad of tobacco and press it into place Frank-style. Tobacco is stored in OXO POP container with size 60 Boveda 72% pack.

Savinelli 207 smooth is my favorite pipe and favorite pipe design.

It generally keeps its flavor throughout the entirety of the bowl. This an all-around great aromatic.

As a newer pipe smoker, I am mainly exploring the different blends (I favor aromatic blends, although I am dipping my toes into the non-aromatic blends now) to find what I like. Opening the bag and smelling it, I wanted to eat it instead of smoking it, it smells that good! The room note is mostly vanilla, unlike the tin note. Smokes really easy, was worried as it is a very moist blend but I didn't have to dry it to smoke it with no issues keeping lit and no tongue bite at all.

This tobacco has a delightful aroma and flavor. You can tell that you are smoking premium tobacco as there no stems, etc, to deal with. It takes a lite well and requires very few relights. I detected little nicotine, and experienced no bite at all with this blend. It smokes very cool. Everything considered, this is a great smoke all day and night.

Highly Recommended!

Don't we love reviews that start with "I'm not a fan of aromatics and I'm gonna tell you why I hate this one in particular."? This is not one of those reviews.

My tastes prefer semi-aro's with a light topping. An aromatic like Vanilla Custard would normally be one I'd avoid simply due to it's name but after reading the reviews here I had to give it a try. If it turned out to be overly sweet and or goopy I would have just mixed it 50/50 with Windsail Virginia.

Upon opening the bag, the aroma was so strong that I was sure it would need toning down, so I was rather surprised that VC smoked fine straight from the bag. It did not require any dry time.

What a lovely smoke. Yes it's sweet but not overly so. It's got a really nice flavour and the room note is very pleasant.

The course cut is easy to pack, it doesn't burn hot and although it does leave some moisture it does not leave any goop at the end of a bowl.

Mild, smooth, very tasty with low nicotine. Not even a hint of bite.

Normally I only smoke a couple of bowls of aromatics over the course of a day, since I enjoy most genres but I found that VC did not wear out it's welcome when I smoked a few bowls in succession at a social event.

For my personal tastes this is a three star blend but for what it is, Sutliff has got this sweet aromatic right. For aro lovers it's a four star blend. Highly recommended for aro lovers, would be a great beginners blend and for experienced smokers looking for a mild, sweet smoke for social occasions or a change of pace. For those who don't appreciate aromatics just no [So we can all be spared yet another negative review expressing why you hate aromatics]

Bought in bulk along with Sutliff Creme Brulee.

Rich vanilla smell. Decent vanilla flavor. Perfect mild sweet smoke with morning coffee. Not much tobacco flavor, but won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth the rest of the morning. If you’re looking for a mellow sweet tasting morning smoke I would recommend.

The initial smell of the tin itself smells like something you can eat. Burns a little hot after lighting it, but burns pretty well and evenly with good amounts of flavor. One of my favorite vanilla blends that I enjoy coming back to every now and then.

The aroma is exactly as the name suggests. It comes pretty wet, so needs ample drying time. A pleasant overall sweetness with hints of vanilla coming through every now and then.

This is a 1 oz sample picked up for something different. Sutliff Vanilla Custard has a wonderful jar note. It seems very much like vanilla custard. The jar note translates very well into the smoke and it is creamy, buttery vanilla that does remained me of vanilla custard with a trace of honey that comes and goes. The casing is heavy enough that I don't get a lot of tobacco flavor what does come through is very earthy. The smoke is very mild overall, don't expect a lot of smoke unless you push it, which should not be done as it gets hot. The nic hit is not noticeable. Room note is very nice. It will smoke a little wet and does need a few more than the average number of relights. This is a solid 3 star aromatic blend!

If you are in search of the ultimate Vanilla pipe tobacco this is it. Great in the morning with that cup of joe. Smokes cool, won't bite and burns to a nice gray ash. Delivers vanilla, vanilla and vanilla! Not one I would smoke all day as I am an English man, just not in the A.M.

Like Hawaiian pizza, most will either love or hate this, depending on how they feel about aromatics... This is sweet, very sweet. Buttery vanilla cream is how I would describe the taste; no tobacco at all. The note is much the same. It required only a few relights and brief drying time and did leave a small amout of dottle in the chamber.

My all-time favorite tobacco. An excellent all-day smoke. Yes, it's sweet, but that's why I like it. The pouch smells of rich vanilla custard, and the smoke tastes almost like Boston cream pie. Notes of chocolate come out after it is lit, and it makes for a wonderful combination. The room note is amazing! The smoke is so rich and thick, yet it burns cool even without drying. I keep at least 8 oz of this stuff around at all times, and carry a pouch with me to work on a daily basis. It is sure to please everyone who is lucky enough to be within range of your cloud as well. I have received numerous compliments from strangers while smoking on the porch of my favorite local pub. This tobacco pairs well with nutty, brown ales such as Newcastle. We all have our blends that we could smoke all day, every day: mine just happens to be cheap. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good, sweet, flavorful aromatic to keep around.

As this posts, I've only smoked for less than a year. I want sugary flavors. This is an ice creamy vanilla charged gurgly blessing for me. In the bag it's an air-freshener, that smells,... well reeks like cake batter in a very good way. I've heard people say it smells like cookies. In your choppers it tastes like very smoothe cremey vanilla. Vanilla Cubed! Like that other post says, the bag smell, and the smoke taste are different, losing the butteryness, but it IS Candy, deliciously so.

Didn't enjoy the tin note as much as some other aromatics, but the flavor is superb. Vanilla with hints of cake batter and honey. Flavor strength is higher and of a higher quality than most other aromatics. Unfortunately, the mechanics are not very good. Required many relights, burned hot, and left a good deal of moisture.

How can something smell this good, yet taste this bad? The bag note is absolutely premier. It is fresh vanilla cake, but like the best you’ve smelled. When I smoke it I taste a strange chemical and not the Cake. After all the positive reviews I bought 4 oz. Trying to choke it down. I’ll probably use it as potpourri though.

Always a fan of Vanilla Custard flavors, even when I used to vape. When I first stuck my nose in the jar at my local shop, I knew I had to have it. The 1st couple of bowls broke in my Morgan Bones so that could have been why I didn't enjoy it for those times. Since the pipe is broken in now I really enjoy it. Since that 1st 2 oz I have purchased another 2oz of it & will order more in the future. I am new to pipe tobacco, so take my opinions here with a grain of salt, but if you are a new pipe smoker with a new pipe, you gotta go through a couple of bowls more than likely. Oddly enough, it hasn't totally ghosted my pipe yet.

Tin notes, strong with the custard which I love and the vanilla is there as well. Taste, I kind of get a little creaminess of the custard but it seems I taste the vanilla a little more. Definitely better sipped. It can get a bit chemical if you don't pace your self and let the bowl get hot.

I too really wanted to love this tobacco after having tried the Creme Brulee which I love Sadly, very disappointed. In the bag it smells delicious, but in the mouth a horrible chemical taste and horrid aftertaste. I bought 8 ounces and have tried several times hoping it will improve. Unfortunately no. As someone else suggested perhaps a room freshener. Very disappointed
