A one dimensional bright Virginia flake with a lot of tart and tangy citrus, grass/hay, sour lemon, some sugar, mild vegetation, floralness, and light earth, floral, wood and acidic notes. The latter aspect weakens when aged. The strength, nic-hit and taste levels are in the center of mild to medium. Won't bite or get harsh, but fast puffing may create a little tongue warmth. Does have a few rough edges. An effortless experience that burns clean and a little slow with a very consistent flavor that translates to the short lived pleasant after taste. Requires a few relights, and leaves little dampness in the bowl. Has a pleasant room note. An all day smoke that doesn't dull your tongue, and doesn't cost much. It also makes a very good mixer for home blending if you're so inclined. Greatly improves with age. Three and a half stars.

This is as good and as basic a Virginia flake as you will be able to find. If other more high end or individualistic straight Virginias prove too temperamental or simply too expensive for you, Sutliff Virginia Slices are sure to help you realize what this style of tobacco has to offer without overtaking you with strength, heat, or overwhelming complexity.
This isn't Dark Star or Christmas Cheer, but it doesn't have to be. Hay, wood, and a little bit of citrus make up the overall flavor profile. You don't get much else on the palate, but what you also don't get is heat or anything to fatigue your mouth and tongue while smoking it. Sutliff has managed to capture the various elements that make a Virginia flake with no one attribute standing out or distinguishing itself and all for a price that can make this a daily smoke as opposed to a luxuriant indulgence.
Bulk tobaccos of all kinds should strive to be basic without being boring. Some of the best bulks do manage this: 1Q and RLP6 in the realm of aromatics, Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme or Balkan Supreme for blends with Latakia. Drugstore OTCs have it covered insofar as basic burley is concerned. If you're looking for good, all around bright Virginia zest and tang but don't feel like ponying up McClelland's or Samuel Gawith, 507-C from Sutliff is one of the best, probably one of the few, options.
It should be noted that this is a flake that is meant to be smoked as a flake. If you rub it out it will lose something. Fold and stuff and smoke it slow and you will be rewarded. You won't be excited, but you won't be disappointed.

A wonderful surprise. My physiology usually has ph problems with Brights. They, more often than not, bite the fool out of me. No hint of a bite with this flake. The flavor is just as JimInks stated, sweet hay with a touch of earth. I do get some citrus notes toward the end of the bowl. It's not complex, but it is very pleasant and relaxing. This is a 3.5 star flake, but since it's so "toothless" I'm gonna give it 4.
Mild to medium in body and flavor. I prefer it rubbed and dried. Burns very well.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Virginia Slices #507-C.
It's a little difficult to review this without writing what's already been said, but I'll give it a bash!
High quality. That could be the review, that would about cover it all LOL! Joking aside though, even the scent from the pouch is a paroxysm of class. And then, preparing the flakes couldn't be any easier: they're quite thin, and of the right moisture amount to make them a breeze to rub.
The ignition is easy, and it burns even and clean all the way down. The flavour of this blend, that phrase again: high quality. It's a simple Virginia one, albeit not as zesty as some Va's can be: as well as the slight citrus note, there's a bit of depth to the flavour. The biggest contributor to this depth is quite a formidable woodiness ( I guess that's my take on the earthiness a few other fellows identify!). I wouldn't describe the smoke as cool, but I would say it's one of the most lenient blends where bite's concerned.
I find the nicotine quite mild from #507, and I think the room-note's very pleasant.
Simple: four stars.

I purchased this blend because of the previous review. And I'm glad I did. This is a lovely, cool, tasty virginia flake. Excellent quality and a great value. Very well mannered and even burning. High quality virginia flavor with a slight touch of flavoring. Upon opening the pouch, you can smell the faintest whiff of anise. You can almost taste the anise while smoking, but not quite. I kept asking myself if this was really an Altadis product. That's how good it is. I thought I tasted a little perique on the finish, but I'd guess it's really the touch of stoved virginia visible while examining the flakes. It's very easy to handle. Perfect for those who havn't experienced the pleasures of a straight virginia flake. Rub out a flake and don't pack it too tightly. Delicious to the bottom of the bowl. My review is based on ageing for at least six months. My first bowl lacked the sweetness that six months of ageing provided.

Puff gently, and slowly. This stuff is very subtle. Citrus and grassy hay comes to mind. Might need a little drying time. My shipment was a little moist, but was still smokable right out of the bag. I use the fold and stuff method with this. Leave some extra out, so when it dries a bit, you can use the drier stuff as kindling. Slow burning. Leaves a fine grey ash. This is a good one with black coffee...

Quality Virginia flakes at a price that defies the market laws. Nice smelling tobacco that responds better to fold and stuff than fully rubbed. I always prepare my pipe at least one day in advance so that the burn and flavor are better.
The first part, I'm greeted by sweet hay and very little citrus. There's an extremely mild sweet licorice/anise flavor that permeates during the smoke, that's more evident at the beginning. The second part, I get more sweet hay and a light earthy almost nutty flavor, due to the maturation process. The last part settles into a stronger hay and earthy/ nutty flavor profile with an occasional sweetness.
A perfect creamy and mellow Virginia flake that never bites, to be smoked every day, on any occasion, by the Bright Matured Virginia tobacco aficionado.

I recently purchased some of this tobacco to blend with. I've only ever tried one other Sutliff tobacco being I'm usually stuck on my favorite 3 or 4 brands. I was looking for less expensive tobacco's to experiment with and thought I would give this a try. These are beautiful long flakes, thinly cut into strips. I'm not a huge fan of thick flakes, so the presentation of this blend is perfect. I've just realized that I've smoked more than half of my order without having even begun blending with this. IMO, this is a great, affordable tobacco. Certainly, there are better, more complex Virginias out there, but as an everyday light smoke, this works rather well. Straight bright virginia taste, sweet and sour, with hints of muscadine, hay and grass, citrusy. Also, I think this will age very well. I will definitely be buying more of this and believe that, if I can hold on to it without smoking it all by its self, it will go great with anything. I plan to press a cake with some perique. Maybe adding a touch of oriental leaf would be interesting. The possibilities are endless. I somewhat recommend this if you enjoy the brighter side of Virginias or if you would like to get into coming up with your own mixtures. As an affordable bulk tobacco, you really can't lose.

Grassy slightly sweet bright Virginia as described. Slices were easily rubbed into a medium shag. Packed well into the bowl, take care not to pack too tightly! Very mild with no harshness or overly large Nicotine punch. Most assuredly an all day smoke for the smoker who enjoys a good Virginia. As with nearly all Sutliff tobaccos this one is an excellent smoke and a good value as well. Believe it would mix well with either Kentucky or Perique, which I plan to do. Details into that experiment to follow. A good entry tobacco for the beginner.😀

Altadis 507-C Virginia Slices
Went to the Altadis site on the Internet and browsed through their offerings list. I am not an aromatics smoker but do appreciate that those that are could find one or indeed several things to try. What intrigued me most was the Benjamin Hartwell blends (Signature and Chesdin Mixture)Good stuff. They were nice enough to send me a generous sample of each as well as several other non-aromatics I thought were intresting. All smoked well, some better than others but the Virginia Slices was the best of the bunch by far. Being a big fan of the Kendal and Peter Stokkebye's blends this Altadis offering seemed to fit in very well. The closest description I can give is that it is a very similar tobacco to Peter Stokkebye's "Luxury" blends (not the Bulleye but the others since it does have some mild sort of top dressing,I believe)It rubbed out well and "stuffed" equaly well. Nice flavor and nicotene factors both. Not strong at all but still flavorful and satisfying. Good morning or evening or even possibly an all day smoke as well. The room note is I suppose is good but as I don't smell my own smoke I couldn't remark on that part reliably but my wife assures me it is "Nice'.
The added incentive is that it is not a British tobacco which , some of which by the way I love, but hate the supply problems they seem to constantly have for the smokers in the U.S.. I got the guys at PipesandCigars.com to order it for me so if anyone cares to try it that would be the place to go. Good stuff and very reasonably priced as well.

507c is a lovely, easy smoke. It is way, way better than the price would suggest, this has gone under the radar for too long. The flakes are soft and smell of baked bread. Once lit you are greeted with a grassy, pure Virginia tobacco that is a nice smoke first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee or as an all day staple, as it never gets ashy or harsh. I’ve put away 5 pounds of this if that tells you how fond I am of this pure, basic Virginia flake.

an absolute surprise. This is a very good straight virginia...mostly bright virginia it seems. Might be some other varietals in there, but in any case its a very nice naturally sweet virginia. Much better than one might expect. Id take this over a number of other more well known tinned virginias. The taste is sweet, without casing that I can detect, with a lot of hay and some citrus. Burns pretty cool considering. No bite. I like it a lot and have purchased a lot more.Aging will help.

Mine came in a an 8 oz. purchase from a cellar someone was reducing. It had been two years since purchase and jarred, etc. It came at a good state of hydration - maybe a little on the damp end of ideal. I rubbed it out and smoked it in several different pipes - a couple of GBD pots and a Grabow billiard.
My review in a sentence is that it was a little ho-hum. It did not strike me as especially remarkable but was competent. Virginias cover a lot of territory, and I got hay with a little citrus on the side in terms of taste. I am not tasting any sort of topping. There was a sweet note or two.
It was a fairly mild smoke and was easy enough to keep lit. The few natural sugars in this leaf did not give it a tendency to burn hot, although I had to be mindful not to overpuff looking for more flavor.
This is one of those blends where if I were on that mythical desert island with nothing but this to smoke, I would be grateful. It comes at a reasonable price. It is fairly mild in terms of strength and flavor. I went back and forth on the strength and finally decided it was closer to the mild-to-medium rating.

First off: the smell of these lovely slices in the bag is pure bliss. A lovely essence of honey and classic easy smoking Virginia. I lightly rubbed and crumbled the slices, but not too vigorously. Just the right moisture (not the ready-to-smoke dry like Three Nuns from the tin) for a pleasant smoke.
I think the lingering smell of this on me is probably the best part. Reminds me of European smokers, Dutch ones in particular.
I'll admit that I felt this is kind of dank and barnyard-like when first lighting up. And seemed a bit one-dimensional for the first few minutes. But as I smoked down the bowl, I enjoyed it more and more. No bite, but a decent little nic hit by the end.
Also, the room note -- which I liked -- is probably a bit strong for indoors (which I really don't do anyway). Comparing this to the toastier, Kentucky-laced Three Nuns, I much prefer the Nuns. But 507-C is a much lighter smoke.
Definitely a solid 3.5 stars.

All around a solid, natural and straight forward Virginia flake!
First mention - Bite free Virginia! At least for my tongue and many other reviewers I see have mentioned this.
While being Pretty mild in strength the flavor is very good and not at all airy and ashy like many mild blends. The flavor is medium and enjoyable notes of grass, and a pleasant zesty sort of bright flavors make it notably good. Not at all over bearing. This is shockingly pleasant for a bulk offering at a very reasonable price.
Considering this really has no bite and treats your mouth very kindly, it would indeed make a perfect all day Virginia blend. If your looking for a two pipes in a row blend, or say you’ll be sitting with some friends by a fire and you know you’ll be smoking a lot, this is your blend.!
I usually smoke much higher nicotine blends. This is light in that category. No spins or throat tightening. Room note is probably pretty sweet and natural tobacco I’d imagine.
If you Like natural mild Virginia blends with a very nice sweetness and want an added notch of fullness in flavor, than this is for you.
The flake has perfect moisture , it behaves excellent and smokes slow. No relighting with this flake.
My go to Virginia flake is Peterson flake, and I have to say these sutliff Virginia slices are quality , well rounded, bite free and any quality Virginia lover could probably find nice things to say about this.
I’m trying to find something to take a star away from this blend because it’s not my perfect paradise smoke, but it’s only because I’m used to stronger blends with higher nicotine. so that would not justify taking one away. So I’m gonna give this 4 stars and honestly say it’s one of the finest bulk offerings I’ve had to date, it’s very fair price, it smokes cool, has a great flavor and therefore is highly recommended!

Summary: a straightforward Virginia flake that shines after some age.
Bright Virginias are tricky because they are acidic and sugary. "#507-C" solves this problem by hot-pressing them, but the smoker needs to further solve this problem by aging the "#507-C" for at least six months. It burns easily, can get hot because of the sugars, but delivers the consistent lemon honey on toast flavor of a good bright Virginia mixture, and can be smoked all day with little fuss. The room note smells like a warm sweet smoke, more like buns from the oven than a cigarette, although it is still discernibly tobacco smoke. There is so little nicotine that small children and sugar gliders could smoke this blend without a problem. For the price, it may be the best value going in Virginias today, and it is easy to enjoy all-day with no interruptions.

I was late in the game to try this one. I am always trying new tobaccos and I love Virginias and this one was a surprise. It has become my all day smoke. For a bright tobacco there is no bite. The flavor is just enough to stay interesting. I have shared with other members of GKCPC and they were surprised at how easy this is to enjoy. Priced right and tastes right. I will see how it stands up to Scotch whisky when the weather turns here in KC area.

Basic but excellent Virginia flake. Flakes arrive broken up and very thin. Mine arrived a bit moist so some dry time was needed. Aromas of hay, grass and some zesty lemon notes. I've rubbed it out and stuffed the broken flakes in as are, both methods produce a good burning smoke. The initial flavors are grass, hay and some faint citrus. Best smoked very slow. No bite for me no matter how much I push. I feel like there is a very faint flavoring bit it is inconsistent and I can't quite place it but at times I get a bit of a creamy coffee taste. Overall this is a solid Virginia flake.

Sutliff Virginia Slices is one of the least flavorful tobaccos I have ever smoked. It doesn't taste bad, mind you. In fact, what flavor it has is pretty good for a straight VA. It's just that there isn't very much of it.
Don't get me wrong -- SVS is a quality tobacco. The flakes themselves are quite attractive in appearance, have a pleasing, albeit somewhat subdued, Virginia tobacco fragrance, are pretty near perfectly humidified, and rub out, light and burn just fine. The nicotine hit is about average for a straight VA (i.e., on the mild side) and the tobacco has no more than the usual amount of tongue bite when pushed hard (which you should never do with a VA). So, I imagine that it would make a great base as a blender, or if you wanted to flavor it with some sort of casing.
However, as a straight smoke, I wouldn't recommend SVS.

First review here, I feel like I just had to share this, I was a cigarette smoker for years and I enjoy the pipe so much more, I'm sure some can relate. So I am mostly into Virginia blends and flakes. Enough about me. I got a 1 oz sample of sutliff Virginia slices from pipes and cigars, it came at perfect moisture nice size flakes and rubbed out easily, medium brown in color, very light tobacco tin (bag) note. I smoked it in a brand new stanwell 9mm filter pipe. I say perfect moisture level because it packed perfectly and the draw was exactly how I like it. First lite tasted of hay and a little sweet but very lightly. It gives off plenty of smoke, is not very strong and never bit me. Because of the volume of smoke I found it easy to sip. I'm really surprised how much I liked this one since it seemed there isn't much flavor, but the way it burned was as perfect as I could ever want, I lost myself in what I was doing and found that I smoked down to the bottom of the bowl and never worried about it getting hot or slowing my cadence. Room note is close to a cigarette but not as bad. Most enjoyable smoke I've had in a while even though it wasn't the most flavorful. Anyone who used to smoke cigarettes will find comfort here. Lightly tamp now and then and sit back and enjoy with a good drink. I'll come back and update when I finish my sample. I'll be buying more for sure.

I am definitely a Virginia and Va/Per lover. I have recently been having an affair with burley, particularly the lighter, OTC blends. I've come to like most burley-based blends very much. I guess my tastes in pipe tobacco are fairly eclectic: I also like light English blends and certain other latakia blends - long as they aren't "lat bombs". But I find myself always coming back to Virginia and Va/Per blends.
So, after the fling with burley, I wanted to get several good quality Virginia-Va/Per blends for a nice change. Sutliff's Virginia Slices was one of them. I must say that the presentation is very interesting and attractive. These slices are cut considerably longer than most other flakes I've seen. I read that this is a European style. These slices rub out pretty easily, but my preferred method of flake preparation is a variation of "fold & stuff" I think of as "wad & stuff". So, I pulled a slice into a shorter section, then took a bit and simply wadded the tobacco into a ball and stuffed it into the bowl of my pipe. I repeated until the bowl was full. Bag note: smells like fresh, good ole tobacco. I couldn't detect a topping. This tobacco lights and burns readily to a fine, gray-white ash, and very few re-lights required. As with other Virginia blends, smoke this slowly to get the most flavor. Sip it! The smoke was cool and lasted a long time. Now, I usually have difficulty tasting the citrus notes everyone describes with Va blends. Plenty of grass and hay and all that, but citrus always seems to elude me. But with this blend, I was able to detect it! That sorta citrusy taste was subtle and would shy away whenever I tried to reach for it, but I was definitely getting it with this blend. Some earthiness in there, too, but lots of good, solid tobacco taste. Most Virginias leave a good after-taste for me, and Virginia Slices is no exception. It is also not hard on the tongue provided you don't huff n puff it. My favorite straight Virginia is G.L. Pease "Union Square"; Virginia Slices isn't going to beat it, in my opinion. But, just the same, this blend is tasty. Yes, it is a basic tobacco that is one- maybe two-dimensional. But, sometimes that's what is needed. This blend is good, especially for the price. I recommend it!

The sweetness for which Va. flakes are renowned is present, but turned down a bit in this blend, and the citrus notes are similarly reduced to a hint of lemony tang. What it delivers, predominantly, is natural tobacco flavor, remarkable smoothness, and little of the sharpness for which Va. flakes are notorious.
507c is a mild flavored blend with medium nicotine strength and good whole mouth feel. There may be a bit of top flavor – something dark, maybe licorice – I dunno; but frankly, it’s below the threshold of identification and more in the realm of imagination.
This blend is open to a little criticism because it starts to get ashy-tasting near the bottom of the bowl, and with its reduced sweetness and vague citrus presence, it becomes a little more cigarette-like than I’d like. The only thing that keeps the flavor on track is the grassiness of the tobacco. I don’t find a lot of nuanced flavor in this blend, and that tosses it into the utility smoke category for me; but it is smooth and satisfying, and I think it has a place in my deep rotation – even if it is near the bottom relative to the pricier gourmet blends.
I’m confident that most Va. flake lovers won’t be terribly disappointed by this blend’s lack of complexity and depth; but I wouldn’t go into this expecting to get my socks knocked off either. I would give this a strong 2-star rating, but since it's sold at rock bottom prices, it deserves more consideration.

I have more jars of Sutliff's Virginia Slices in my cellar than any other tobacco. Not only do I smoke it on it's own fairly regularly, but it's a big part of most of my home blends, plus I have quite a bit set aside for aging. It isn't a mindblowing smoke... it's just a really good, solid Virginia. And it's probably the best bang for your buck anywhere.
Tin/jar note upon opening is fresh and sweet, and a bit lemony. First few puffs... mild sweetness, a bit of tang, and some lemon/citrus. Burns clean and cool... it's a quality bright Virginia. And surprisingly for a straight bright Virginia, there is virtually no bite. About halfway through, flavors remain very consistent. A nice mild sweetness, tang, and light grassy and citrus notes. It stays consistent all the way through to the bottom of the bowl. Also, it's important to note... aging, even just six months or so, does wonderful things for this tobacco.
Bottom line: A really good, solid Virginia. Three stars when just smoked fresh on it's own... but considering how well it ages, it's potential in blends, and it's low price... this is a 4 star tobacco for sure.

Virginia Slices is a good bulk VA. Once jarred and left for 6 months opening it I could smell grass/hay notes, very earthy, slightly nutty, and a faint spicy note that reminds me a little of red pepper. The taste is simple but overall very nice. Notes of hay are out front for me, a little citrus note, slightly zesty, mildly earthy, with a woodsy note and a slight hint of that red pepper like spice note comes and goes on occasion. I also get a slight honey and orange flavor that I suspect is a very light topping that comes and goes throughout the bowl. Not overly sweet at this point but at times a note of sweetness comes through. This one is easy to recommend but not complex enough or big enough otherwise to earn the 4th star. Nic is very mild the finish is rather short and I enjoyed this a lot as my first bowl of the day in the mornings or as a mid afternoon smoke now that the weather is warming up. Because it is so mild I doubt that it will benefit from long term aging but it might sweeten a little over the short term. I will more than likely revisit this one at some point as it does fit well as a warm weather smoke.

So this a very easy smoke, i found it mild or les than that, has a good scent and taste, but nothing develops from there, nothing evolves. I found it mild and a bit boring and a bit too young. But good quality virginia for mixtures. Two and a half stars if fresh, there stars if jarred a few months and even more for mixes.

This is my second Virginia from Sutliff. I'm still in search of a Virginia to replace my favor Virginias from McClellands and Dunhill Flake. I have read somewhere that there is a topping but I can't detecting any topping at all. The long flakes are at perfect moisture content and rub out very easy. The aroma is a nice bright Virginia that has matured. It's very similar to Best Brown Flake from Samuel Gawith IMO. From first puff to last puff the flavor is very consistent and surprisingly hardly reminds me of a bright Virginia at all. A nice and deep, sweet, and creamy smoke, with a slight nuttiness. Burns a little on the hot side at first but starts to cool off as it goes down. Extremely very little tongue bite if any at all. Very smooth.
While it doesn't compare to any McClelland Va or Dunhill Flake, it is very similar to Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake but a hair bit lighter on flavor a nicotine which is a big plus due to how hard Best Brown Flake is becoming to find. An awesome flake at a awesome price point.
Update 3-30-2021 I got 2 oz of Virginia Slices today. I can now detect the topping as citrus. It's almost not noticeable. More of a orange citrus then a lemon and it does help compliment the natural citrus flavors of the Virginia's. I'm also picking up on a honey note which goes very well with the citrus.
Also a side note. I haven't confirmed it myself, but one source states that Virginia Slices are actually produced by Orlik and imported instead of being produced by Sutliff directly. Just a bit of useless info that some might find interesting.

One of the most economical virginias you can find, especially in flake(ish) form, and also, IMO, one of the best. It won't take you on a journey each smoke, but it certainly has taken me on a journey as I've come to know and love it.
When I first tried it, a little fresh, someone warned that it needs age---and, like all virginias, it will benefit from age (more on that in a bit). With those disclaimers in mind, I still found it quite good after initial purchase. A bit grassy, a bit lemon-grass-citrusy, with a bit of spiciness that betrays its relative immaturity but which is not altogether unpleasant. And believe me, i have had some extremely unpleasant experiences with harsh, new virginias, including my first bowl of a brand new tin of Mac Baren HH Pure Va, which tore my throat up so much I couldn't even finish it (after a year in a jar, this harshness disappeared, and HH Pure Va is one of my top tier va smokes). And don’t get me started on C&D virginias. Point is, I've had too-fresh virginias, and Sutliff 507c, I would say, was not overly fresh straight from SmokingPipes, still quite enjoyable.
Also, while i enjoyed the flavors, they don't require much concentration, nor do they change all that much throughout the smoke. This, along with its price, make it a perfect candidate for one of my "writing" tobaccos. Needs little concentration, smokes without fuss if you load it properly. Cheap and easy to get so i'm not worried about messing it up if i get so focused on the writing that i ruin it somehow---which hasn't happened, by the way. My other go-to writing blends are PS Cube Cut and Amphora Original.
Now here's where the journey part kicks in, because while the flavors won't develop much through one individual bowl, they certainly have devloped with a little age, and more than i expected. I'm still on the first batch i jarred, but because of my infrequency of smoking (relative to many of you guys) and because I don't smoke it exclusively, even during writing sessions, due to the fact that i cycle through it and PS Cube cut mostly, it still gets a decent amount of rest and time in that jar despite the fact that I'm returning to it and opening it every so often. Especially during the winter, where I smoke almost never except for on rare days like today where I get unseanably warm weather and go out in my jacket and smoke and type on my alphasmart neo 2.
This occasionally-opened jar, which says October 2020 on it, has become something different, though there's still that same 507c citrus DNA in it. Less grassy, no spiciness. It has become rich and creamy. And the citrus has morphed from a bright lemongrass to almost a light, sweet orange. When I do stop and think about it as I'm smoking, it i get major orange creamsicle vibes. And, dare I say it, might give me a flash or two of what i remember RGF being when i smoked a sample of that (i hear gasps and somebody coming to put a straightjacket on me already). Of course it doesn't have that extra magic given by RGF's burley, but i'm telling you, this is something that can bat way out of its league, and i'd be willing to bet a year- or two-old sample of this would do extremely well in a blind taste test against some of the more sought-after blends. (the only problem is that its appearance is extremely recognizable and would be hard to smoke it truly blind)
I have a little over a pound of this cellared, which for me is probably enough to last me decades, even if it's less than a year for someone else. I'll probably still buy more here and there, just in case it ever is completely gone or its price gets blown up like LBF (another of which i have aged to exponentially great results), but i have to keep in mind that i also have other things to smoke, and other virginias i love, like Mac Baren Va no. 1 and Mac Baren HH Pure Va, to name a couple other favorites. Despite that I keep saying HH Pure Va takes my number 1 spot for virginias, Mcclelland being gone, I go back to the sutliff much mroe often, and i'm not even sure anymore if it's only because it's so inexpensive.

A well behaved flake tobacco. Mild one dimensional flavor of pure Virginia tobacco. The flavor reminds me a little of anise and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. Flake burns well with the method of your choice, folded or rubbed out. Produces lots of smoke and burns to the bottom of the bowl with little attention. Room note is barely noticeable (according to my wife.) Priced right and worth adding to your rotation.

though the mfg description did not indicate any there seemed to be the slightest hint of a topping in the bag note which also came through very lightly in the smoke, it was not a distraction to the overall enjoyment of the blend. i found this to be very pleasant straight Virginia tobacco, it is a long cut flake that rubs out and packs easily. the flavor is typical of medium sugar level Virginia, it does require several swipes with a pipe cleaner in the course of a bowl to keep moisture down but it burns to a nice ash without any relight required. no tongue bite and a fair aftertaste. room note is okay. could easily be an all day smoke. has some hay/grass/maltiness notes. it is offered in bulk and seems to be pretty readily available (unlike many other favorite Va. and Va/Per blends right now). if you are looking for a nice, straight forward, affordable, available Va. blend to try, i would suggest this.

I enjoyed this. A solid Virginia flake that is quite a value. With as much Bright Va as this flake is composed, I expected a more citrus sweet experience, but the sweetness in this blend is more subdued and the depth of flavor in this one is quite full to my tastes.
I would compare this more to SG FVF than I would to GH Bright CR; the latter of which is more akin to my expectations. However, I do not think it is as good as FVF, but at the price and availability, it will certainly do in a pinch. This also performs as well as FVF IMO.

Beautiful, mottled flakes sliced thinly. Easy to fold and twist into the pipe. The room aroma is pleasant. The smoke is sweet and fruity. It's got a lot of body for a VA. The flavor is mild to medium in strength. It doesn't bite if you sip gently. Very sweet, citrusy, and delicious when exhaled thru the nose. Many moons ago my favourite straight Virginias were Rattray's Old Gowrie and Dunhill's Light Flake. New versions of both are readily available but, as it happens, they are not quite the same (some would argue, not even close).
I was positively surprised when, by chance, I tied Sutliff's Virginia Slices. Not because they purport to be a match to either of the illustrious aforementioned blends but because, in their own right, they are --in my view--within the same flavour range, as well as having similar strength and combustion rate.
None of the ketchup/vinegar undertones in Virginia Slices. Quite the contrary: the taste is superb, naturally sweet, akin to molasses and dried raisins. They're blended in such a way they won't bite, unless if puffed too hard. Similar to Opening Night, but with more flavour and intensity, as well as to Union Square, but with a more defined tobacco structure and greater strength.
Generally speaking I'm not a big fan of Sutliff blends, but these Virginia Slices are something else. Chapeau! Highly recommended to established Virginia flake smokers, as well as to those beginning to experiment with straight Virginias but wish to avoid tongue bite or the acidity of vinegar and ketchup.

I was surprised this one slipped under my radar for this long. It's bright, tangy, and acidic, with notes of sweet hay, and sour citrus. No bite to be found. About halfway it becomes slightly more rich and earthy, but maintains its original profile. The retrohale is sharp, and crisp. My wife liked the room note saying it smelled a little like toast and cranberries. I've only seen this available in bulk. Mine came on the dry side from Pipes and Cigars. I highly recommend this one. It's a simple, perfect, all day smoke that wont break the bank.

This is a good Virginia when fresh but definitely needs some age to really shine. When its fresh it tastes a little green and immature. Has some decent sweetness and hay flavors. Very earthy for a bright straight Virginia. I usually let mine sit for a few months before I am really able to fully enjoy it. After 2+ years it is exceptional. Retains the bright flavors but deepens in flavor and complexity.

Presentation: Comes in long flakes. I cut them in half and put them in a mylar bag. Slightly dense and moist. A nice color of gold and brown.
Palette: Tin note is citrus, orange and light grapefruit, a touch of honey, hay, light toast. Upon light up, it offers all the same flavors as the tin note. The blend doesn't change too much as the bowl progresses but it does become a little sweeter as the components caramelize. Don't expect much complexity.
Performance: Burns well. Decent pace with a few relights. Mild nicotine. Some moisture in the heel. Can run hot if chased and a little tongue bite.
Conclusion: This is basic as basic comes. What Sutliff lacks in this blend is complexity is made up for the price point and a really simple, no hassle straight VA flake that can keep you company for the years to come. I can't say what this tastes like aged, but I can only imagine that with like all pure Va flakes, age will do wonders and only solidify the flavors more deeply. Not my favorite VA flake but you really can't lose with this considering is ease of use and bulk pricing. A no nonsense blend and certainly don't need to think too hard while smoking.

It comes in beautiful flakes cut into long and wide strips, similar to Reiner's famous Blend 71. When cold, they have a pleasant aroma of Virginia tobacco, with just enough humidity to load directly from their container. It burns very well.
The flavor is typical of bright virginia hay, soft and light, with acid and citrus touches, quite spicy, more on the dry side than on the sweet side, although a slight sweetness is also sometimes appreciated. I have recently acquired it and although it is a young tobacco, I am already enjoying it. It reminds a bit of the yellow Capstan, although I like this 507 better.
I'll let it age about six months, as recommended around here, and will check it again. Then I will see if I raise another star or keep the three with which I rate it now.
Update 09/05/2021: the people here were right and seven months later this tobacco has gotten tastier. I leave pending the possible rise of a star for when the tin ends.

Nice mild Va and very much like other Navy flakes and similar Va flake that I have smoked. One night I finally tasted some citrus notes. Not sure why it took me smoking this on and off for over a month for that to happen. I started thinking about 7-up soda and was like wait a sec that is what I am tasting, especially on the retro! Came in a nice wrapped block of flakes. The flakes are loose and come apart rather easily. I had to cut them in half in order to fit into mason jars of my size choosing. The price is perfect. Between this and P.S. Luxury Navy Flake, I shall be buying as much of this as I possibly can and storing it just in case of a government caused tobaccopocalypse scenario where you can no longer order tobacco online. I can always buy tins of name brand stuff at local B&M for top taxed dollar but this could literally be your bread and butter and honestly it's pretty much just as good. I hear they age nicely. Bonus!
I smoke outside and this thing makes me choose a room note so I had to put something. My wife complains that I smell like cigarettes after I smoke Va and she's an ex cig smoker so it figures the better the pipe tobacco the worse the reaction from the peanut gallery.

By far one of the mildest all Virginia I have smoked thus far. This is very grassy, like wild native fields, ranging to hay and malt. Citrus, a descriptor I find a tad overused, to be very apt in this case. The sweetness has a pronounced grain and malt character. And it is sweet; naturally so. Mild without being boring. Tasty in fact . Puffing on it with no rough edges I can detect. Great price to quality ratio.

What is it like? If there's no Perique in the PS Deluxe Navy Flake, and yes, that's what it looks like, young Virginia should have room to grow.
