I found this to be an agreeable aromatic with a flavor that compliments the cavendish base very well. You'll taste the tobacco as well as the topping. Had I not known the name, I'm not sure I'd have identified caramel, but it works for me. Definitely worth a try if you enjoy aromatics. I didn't experience the dramatic problems with keeping it lit that the other reviewers did, but it does seem to require some relights.
This is a "cliff's notes" review rather than my usual format. Dark Caramel is a high quality / low taste aromatic from C & D. The tobacco is a typical C&D rough cut consisting of 90% broad shag cut leaf, chocolate milk in color with a smattering of black ribbon. The pouch aroma is outstanding, and this blend might be made more enjoyable by simply putting your pipe back in its rack and using two rubber bands to strap the pouch to your face for an hour. Lighting is suprisingly difficult for the typically dry level of humidity that C&D blends are shipped at. However, once underway, (usually 3-4 matches), the blend burns relatively quickly and one will normally reach mid-bowl before requiring another match. Taste is very hard to explain. The tobacco taste, while not strong, is definitely more pronounced than the topping. This is suprising considering the pouch strength. Very mild caramel flavor which turned ashy 1/3 way into the bowl in all pipes. I seldom smoked the bowl to the bottom, usually because the tobacco became unpleasant due to wetness. This was no fault of the tobacco humidity nor pack, rather a byproduct of the 300PSI suction I applied to the pipe in a futile attempt at drawing more flavor from this blend.
I'm sure C&D has many good aromatic blends. I just happened to pick two that don't fall into that category. (see Tawny Port full review).
