Medium to Strong Mild Full Pleasant

I have just completed my first bowl of the new Peterson's Perfect Plug and thought I'd offer my impressions to anyone who wants to read my blabber. When the tobacco first became available not long ago, I ordered four tins and recently popped the lid on one of them. Inside was a rock hard square brick of tobacco sealed in plastic. The color of the leaf was a mottled black/brown. I opened the plastic and took a whiff. I swear, the brick smelled exactly like Silly Putty (you know, the stuff that kids mess up the house with). The brick was somewhat easy to peel and after getting a couple of thin wafer like layers off of the mother ship I began hand breaking them up into small thin chunks (no easy task and quite time consuming). The leaf did contain some moisture content but not much. I loaded up the thin broken chunks into a favorite old briar and lit up... and lit up... and lit up... man, this tobacco is hard to keep lit.

The taste is very powerful Virginia/Burley with a bit of fruit like casing that was deep, dark and rich. The added flavoring, despite its depth (it never burned off), was not overpowering and never truly "sweet." I could tell this tobacco had been heavily stoved and pressed. Although somewhat similar in taste to G&H Dark Plug, this one is much more refined and didn't body slam my palate. It does carry a burst of nicotine from the start and the presentation of that wonderful drug is unrelenting throughout the bowl.

If you have some time on your hands (to prepare the leaf), and enjoy a deep and not too sweet Virginia/Burley that packs a nicotine punch, this may be a bell ringer. The amount of re-lights needed was annoying and I wish there was such a thing as a ready-rubbed version of this.

The Virginias have a fair amount of tangy dark fruit, earth, wood, bread, sugar, some grass, tart and tangy citrus, vegetation, mild floralness, a couple of cigar notes, and a pinch of spice. They are bolstered by the bold nutty, earthy, woody, sweet burleys. The fruit toppings remind me of dried fruit, citrus, and figs. They mildly sublimate the tobaccos. The strength is a couple of notches past the medium mark. The taste level is almost in the center of medium to full. The nic-hit is a step and a half short of medium. You'll need to be patient as you prepare it for smoking, and however you decide to cut the plug, you'll need to give this some dry time before lighting a match to it. Take the time, work with it, and you'll be rewarded with a mildly creamy, smooth, very deep, consistent, cool, clean flavor to the finish. It's slow burning, requires several relights, and there will be a little moisture at the bottom of the bowl. Won't bite or get harsh, but has a rough edge here and there. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste. The room note is a slot stronger. Not quite an all day smoke. Three and a half stars.

Update 8-5-2022. The blend has been changed. It’s a little more floral, sour, a tad spicier, rougher, less sweet, and the toppings are a shade less obvious. The citrus is much more prominent than the dark fruit. It has a light acidity which wasn’t present in the earlier productions. These variations indicate that the dark red Virginias were mostly or completely replaced by bright Virginias though the plug looks very close to what it was before. The strength, nic-hit and taste levels have not changed. All of the other previous aspects remain the same. Three stars.

Please what ever you do, do not write this off. Smoked in the right way this is a simply wonderful tobacco that can be enjoyed by all. Yes, even begginers.

I've found that there are some rules to help though.

1, Storage. Once you buy a tin transfer to an airtight jar. For me this is an occasional smoke. Something I can go back to when I fancy a change. It wont make the rotation but its nice to come back to. When that moment comes cut a slice or two and prepare the bowl how you like. Experiment to find out what best suits.

2, Be mindful of the N kick. You may not realise it at first but trust me if you fill a large bowl and your not used to it, after 45 mins your head will be spinning. So a pipe with a small bowl is best to start off with. Either that or half fill the bowl until you can gauge the amount of tobacco to add.

3, Find your rhythm. If you try to puff your way through this it will bite you in the ass as well as the mouth. Best to sip or break up with a drink of tea, coffee or something to do like read.

4, Sit back and enjoy. I like nothing better than smoking while walking the dog but this tobacco is definitely a sitter. It will help to find that rhythm. And if your head does start to spin well your already sitting down.

5, And the most important Respect the tobacco. If you take your time to get to know this tobacco you will truly appreciate it. It may deter some because of the faff needed to prepare. But with everything in life the more you put in, the more you get out. And you'll find that your hard work does pay off.

Peterson - Perfect Plug.

Delicious! It has a splendid aroma emanating from the unlit product, with a raisin/plum touch to it. Being a plug be prepared for a little extra time in filling the bowl, but it more than pays off!

The smoke has a really good Virginia and Burley taste to it, being well balanced with a very slight raisin note, also. Nicotine level is neither too much nor too little, medium. It gives a beautiful room note (IMO) that is very traditional and pleases all around. I don't smoke many plug blends but this is a belter!

Four stars.

Update: 14/01/17, after 3 years this is still my favourite plug blend, especially in a cob!

It took a bit of learning with this one, but in the end this is so far the best tobacco I have experienced. First, the presentation in the tin was so wonderful, it looked like dessert. Once I unwrapped the little plug I was hit with fermenting plums and raisins. Basically it smelled exactly like I'd expect it to based on appearance. Next, shaving down the little slices with a fillet knife made me realize just how dense this plug is. The tobacco is literally packed so tight it felt like slicing through a block of cheddar cheese. I first tried it cubed, and for smoking purposes I recommend this method as it seems to make for a cooler and more lasting smoke than rubbing it out. However, I find rubbing it helps me gauge the moisture content more than cubing. So, maybe the answer is half and half. Either way, this stuff needs drying time in my opinion.

I pack it looser than I would say, Sherlock Holmes. The smoke is thick and creamy, like custard, and has no bite. The flavor is layered first by the nutty burley, then the sweetness grass flavor of quality Virginia.

I find that with this tobacco in particular, the pipe matters. I use the thinnest bowl I have: a 1910 peterson straight pipe. Since I like to smoke it cool (it burns cool to begin with), I can feel if it is getting too hot before it even happens; that's why I reach for the thinner walled pipe with this one.

Nice looking chocolate brownie in the tin with a deep, earthy aroma mixed with some fruitiness, similar to Irish Flake but less intrusive. This can be ripped apart and rubbed out or cut into small pieces. I had my best success with small cubes.

I found the topping started mild and then burned off rather quickly, unlike Irish or University Flakes. What was left was a flavor that was deeeeep! Cellar deep. Center of the earth deep. Very tobacco-y with hints of porterhouse steak. Although I couldn't really perceive the topping at that point, there was a slight fruity flavor, but it was very subdued. But a citrus quality bobbed and weaved on occasion. However, the main course was that deep, rich tobacco. This was a good tasting smoke that misses a 4th star by lacking the complexity that I prefer. Quite frankly, I liked this one but the plug made for a bit more effort than I like when smoking. I prefer the Flake, but by the slimmest of margins. Try this one if you enjoy more darkness than light in your blends.

First encounter with a plug pipe tobacco. The processing in preparation is as enjoyable if not more enjoyable as the smoking thereof. Slices off of the plug require a sharp knife with even pressure to obtain a nice full flake. Over night in the plug can left this flake in perfect humidity for a smooth, cool and relaxing smoke. Report from the "war department" declare the aroma to be nice and tolerable.

Again, the process of getting to the smoke is therapeutic.

Summary: A dark, full tobacco flavor lightly cased in citrus and licorice. More easily cut and smoked than most sources would have you believe.

The Plug comes in a plastic bag like a confection, inside of a tin and wrapped in frilly paper. Before removing it from the plastic, a tin note of a -- well, there's no euphemistic way to say this -- manure or old musty sewer scent rises, as one finds with some Gawith Hoggarth blends. The smoker feels momentary dismay. When the plastic comes off, this gives way to a light citrus essence with undertones of anise or something similar that is hard to pin down. Slicing the plug is easy: place it on a piece of cardboard, whip out your trusty pocketknife and place it 1/16" -- about the thickness of the cover of your favorite notebook -- and push down firmly until you hit bottom. Roll that flake in your hand, then fold it and give it a few quick rubs between your hands, then stuff the resulting wad in your pipe. Maybe put the dishes away or check your email, then come back and light up. For me, this needed no charring light, but took thirstily to the flame.

"Perfect Plug" bears a rich and dense flavor with increasing nicotine strength throughout the bowl. The light fruit flavor, more like bergamot or berries than an apple or orange, fades to the background and the taste of stoved tobacco mixed with strong Virginia emerges. Similar to Peterson "Irish Flake," the dark flavors meld to form a low note to which the topping serves as contrast and complement. As the bowl burns down to an ember and then to ash, this flavor matures into a full flavor like one might get from nuts, meat or a dark ale.

Probably this blend best serves experienced smokers not because of its nicotine hit, which is lower than Samuel Gawith "1792 Flake" but stronger than most Medium-to-Strong tobaccos, but because these flavors -- like many of the best tobaccos -- start simple and then internal harmonies emerge, first as individual notes and then as sliding combinations of those. It takes some experience tasting to notice these. As far as strength and the perceived difficulty of the plug, those are minor obstacles; one can smoke smaller bowls at first, and slicing it is no harder than making drip coffee.

Plug looks just like the plug tobacco that "Jose Wale's" cuts a chaw off. Very dark a bit sticky and a deep rich depth of aroma that is followed through in its taste. No tongue bite, smooth cool smoke that anyone can enjoy. In my experience even aromatic only smokers enjoy this at least on occation. Keep it as a main stay or as a treat like a very nice bold burbon.

I must be missing something, I fail to see anything great about this.

This was my first plug, the next one had better be different. I can understand that making plugs enhances a blend, so maybe it's the blend I don't like? I'm not a fan of the extra work needed to get from a delicious brownie looking square to a rewarding smoke. Maybe I'm lazy. Well, yes I'm kinda lazy.

I worked this plug everyway I could. Rubbing it thoroughly. Cutting a flake and folding a la MacBaren Navy Flake. Smoked it immediately, cut it and waited a week before smoking. No matter what I did, it acted like asbestos.

I couldn't get this to stay lit to save my life. I used matches, butane lighters (not jet, Bic), and Zippos. I almost tried to use an Oxy-acyteline torch, but I just smoked another blend instead.

On the rare chances I got it to stay lit for longer than a minute, I was underwhelmed. Lackluster burley and bland VA. I worked way too hard to smoke for this...

The one thing I did notice: it has a big dose of nicotine.

Just a rare tobacco I don't like.

Figured I'd check this whole plug-deal out a while ago, and picked a tin of PPP. Peterson rarely disappoints, so it seemed like a good choice to start out with.

Tin note is quite nice. There is some "fruitiness" here that reminds me of grape, but it doesn't strike me as artificial, rather it's more in the line of what dark stoved VA delivers. Overall it smells mostly sugary.

Preparation was a little tougher than I expected, so do take care to sharpen the knife before you start carving. After doing exactly that, I found it to be be manageable without too much difficulty. I cubed up the end piece, as that one proved to be too much of a challenge to slice as thin as I like.

The resulting flakes came out very dense, so fluff them up properly, or use a little less so there's ample room for it to expand, or you'll be disappointed (this is where the difficulties some have reported about keeping it lit comes from, I believe). To me it tasted best when fully rubbed out. It does strike me as "somewhat" of an aromatic when smoked - the fruitiness comes through in the taste, but again, doesn't strike me as if something artificial has been added. The room note is reminiscent of this, also, and not at all bad actually.

To me this is more mild-medium in strength, and has so far remained largely consistent in taste from bowl to bowl, improving quite a bit once it has had some time to breathe. The line from just right to too dry is however a little bit narrow. Other than that I can't find any major faults here. Not even the burley manages to get on my nerves here - it's been used right here and not only adds a rounded out body, but also a very nice earthy and slightly peppery tone. It doesn't say anything on the tin about it, but I'm thinking there's got to be some KY in here (or the Malawi leaf is grown or prepared in a similar way as genuine KY)... but I'll leave that for more finely tuned palates to discern.

All in all this is a very nice blend that is very tasty, cool and long-burning. I probably won't be adding it to the regular rotation, but I might come back to it once in a while.

Well, I'm not going to lie, I just don't get it.

I purchased a few tins of this about 10 years ago. Smoked a few bows and settled on....meh. It is not bad, but I struggled to find what all the hype was about. I put it away and recently saw the tins and though I would check in on it and see what some age did to it. My conclusion? Still rather meh.

This is a great example of how different smokers taste different tobaccos. Based on some folks extolling the virtues of this blend, I realize it is me who is missing something. It is a quality product, I just can't find the excitement.

This is a true traditional plug. The type of stuff I imagine centuries ago people kept in a pocket and sliced a bit off when necessary. It is a bit of a pain to prepare compared to the ribbon cuts, but I personally have always felt a kinship with the traditions of pipe preparation, so I don't mind one bit. The tobaccos are very dark, and even with 10 years of age, it definitely needed some drying time.

The flavors are for me, pretty middle. Virginias are present, but don't present the great virtues of virginia. The burleys are there but don't give off the full nutty flavor. It just does not interest me that much.

Alright, so the tin note isn’t much, actually delivers little smell since the plug comes packed in a plastic bag.

So, after your take the plug out from that plastic bag you get.... a brick, man! This might look like a delicious brownie, but it’s so hard that you can compare it with a brick or a stone.

The tobacco is very well pressed, and to my advantage, it was full of sugar crystals. Unfortunately, I don’t have the code for the date of this tin, but it should be few years old if it has so much sugar crystals.

The tobacco itself also has little smell. Little floral notes, which keep reminding me of University Flake. Only after it is cut and rubbed the smell starts to be felt better, adding some nice citrus and floral notes, again, very similar to University Flake.

Can be quite hard to cut it in flakes, unless you have a very good and sharp knife, otherwise I would recommend you simply cut out the corners. Be careful, you might not cut the plug but you might cut your fingers, which will make the blood run into the tobacco and will be like a casing or topping for a new “sensational blend” with blood flavor (I know it’s weird hearing this from a Romanian hahah). Also, be sure to cut it on a cutting board, not on your desk, as you might scratch or cut the desk too.

I’ve smoked it both rubbed and flake. I took notes from time to time, and I will present everything I’ve encountered so far.

First month:

Tried different ways of cutting it, tried it flake and rubbed. Even if the plug feels like it’s dry (and hard as a rock), don’t be fooled. After you cut the flakes, make sure you leave them to dry enough. It’s actually quite moist and if it’s not dry enough you will encounter difficulties at lighting it and keeping it lit.

So, I suggest that you cut flakes as thin as you can and leave them to dry for at least 30 minutes, preferably one hour. After that, you can either smoke them as flakes or rub them.

If it was cut well, dried enough and packed correctly in the pipe, it actually lights up fairly easy. The first smokes deliver a straight taste, mostly earthy and bready notes, with just a little sweetness and some fruity notes barely noticeable. Leaves a nice white ash.

1 month later:

Yeah, the cake itself doesn’t smell like anything. I cut off two slices (two flakes) as thin as possible and let them dry. The flakes also have little to no smell. The problem was, I cut the flakes but forgot about them outside, and they dried over night. They were very dry, I was worried, but I decided to rub them and fill the pipe.

It did light up easy, but again, there was no taste at first. The taste started to appear gradually, very shy, giving hints of sweetness and citrus notes. By the middle of the bowl, if you sip/puff slowly, the fruity notes will come out more along with the sweetness of the virginia (which like I mentioned, was full of sugar crystals). The fruity notes are actually berry notes. However, the earthy and bready taste is more pronounced than the sweetness and fruity taste.

Another note I took, is when I let the flakes sit for 3 hours, since I had to leave home for something important. Got back home, laid in my chair and started watching a movie, when I was struck by an amazing cold, fruity, naturally sweet smoke. The burley was there, but not as straightforward as it was before and this was the only time I experienced these notes with this tobacco.

It is not as heavy in vitamin N as University Flake, yet it does have its good share of nicotine (which for me, is great). However, University Flake is, in my opinion, far better than this blend.

I believe this is a tobacco that is worth aging. Even if burley doesn’t age well, the virginia does, and in this blend, it might help a lot.

Almost 4 months later

Well, I’ve smoked this baby again in the last two days, and tried it as a flake and rubbed. burns very well for a flake, but the flavor isn’t as great great as it should be, so I recommend rubbing it.

Also, i recommend drying it more than less. even if it doesn’t seem to be wet at the touch, it actually is, and 30 minutes won’t do much to this. Leave it for at least an hour. Even if it’s super dry, it won’t bite, it won’t change its flavor (which is almost absent no matter what you do with the tobacco). But if it’s wet, even a little, it will light up damn hard, will ask for several relights and tamping.

Kept on smoking this and came to the conclusion that it’s a good, decent tobacco, but nothing special about it. Good nicotine amount, but tastewise is kind of poor, actually even sour to some extent and the casing/toping can barely be noticed, and at times it’s actually quite flat. Clearly under University Flake.

Boy, this tobacco seems like it doesn’t end! I have the tin for over 4 months and I still have half of the plug. I wish it would be the same with my favorite blends. Unfortunately, I rarely smoked this one as it doesn’t deliver me any real pleasure.

Don’t know what else to say about this. Ah, the room note is pleasant! Forgot to mention that.

Disclaimer: ive only smoked one tin of this stuff. I mostly smoke a good deal more than that before reviewing but i figure it may never get to that point, and id like to offer my opinion on this blend anyway. 3P is a nifty ultra dense plug that is very moist and hard. I dont smoke all that many plugs, but i think this is the firmest ive run across. A sharp knife will do the deed, and the resulting flakes should be well crumbled and given ample drying time if you hope to have a go at smoking it. Once accomplished, this little number can be gravity loaded and coaxed to burn fairly well. The plug smells of deep fruit. This translates to the smoke, and while it isnt very sweet, there is a prominent fruit scent throughout. I think of it as a less potent and deeper variety of what is used in university flake, approaching Erinmore territory in flavor (but not intensity). The va to burley ratio is very nice, and long stoving has melded the two into a lovely whole. Overall it is absolutely respectable and well done, has ample nicotine, and on paper would be my ideal smoke. While ive enjoyed each bowl of it, i never really craved it. I couldnt tell you why, i guess there really is no accounting for taste. I think this is a unique, very well made plug, and can offer a recommendation easily, i just personally follow my longings when it comes to tobacco, and for whatever reason i just dont long for it as i do for my old standbys. Easily a 3 star offering and could be 4 for some.

This is, in my opinion, the best Peterson tobacco. Now, Im partial to plugs I have to say, although it is a bit of effort to prepare. When i smoke all day and am on the run I take a ribbon or broken flake in a pouch (like Germain's Plumcake, or C&D's Opening Night, or GL Pease's Union Sq...etc) but often at home, I take the time to smoke plugs -- which I think carry a special quality of taste. Perfection Plug is very cool...and in that sense I can think of only Solani Aged Burley Flake being as cool as this. The taste is a touch smokey and the burley is high quality and dark and earthy. There is a bit of fermentation and the plug itself is almost black in color. It has that odd raison like smell to it when you unwrap it but the taste is 98% tobacco taste. Whatever else is in there is very very very mild. Overall, if you like plugs or want to try plugs, this is a good one. The Gawith Hogarth bulk flakes are sort of the gold standard for this type of pipe tobacco, but Peterson is now in the running I'd say. The nicotine hit is a tad over medium, but never harsh. It is a very cool long burning and rich smoke.

An excellent tobacco. It looks like a piece of candy, smells like something from 1001 Arabian Nights. I have cut off two thin slices, rolled the flake, and loaded it into my pipe. The layers need to be enjoyed together as a whole. I let it dry for 3-4 hours, then lit it. It had a cool, Virginia taste to it, that matured until the end of the bowl into something like a dessert, however it was never overwhelming, more many and earthly in character. It smoked like a good quality cigar, yielding the properties of the pressed leafs gradually. The room note is quite pleasant, I had a nice Chianti while smoking, it's a real reward. For the second bowl I rubbed two thin slices of tobacco from the same batch, used a different pipe, it gave off its Virginia character even better, that matured over time. It burns slow, you need to take care of it, however it is indeed worth the patience. One of my favorites so far. I find it interesting, that there was a difference when I smoked it as a flake. Perfect indeed.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 12-5-2014

I was sent a two bowl sample of this in the form of a very small rectangular cube. I sliced it in to very small flakes. About a half inch by a half inch and sliced the first few small flakes into cubes as the flakes would not easily rub out. I crammed them into a bowl in a rush out the door to work and had a very hard time lighting it. Once I got it going it went fine, but I found it rather boring as it got to the bottom of the small bowl.

The next bowl I did entirely different. I rubbed out the small flakes the night before and packed my Savinelli Trevi 320ks the night before smoking it so it would adequately dry. What a difference this made. The next day when I lit up it did so easily and I was immediately engrossed in a rich smoke pungent with dark fired Kentucky. Truth be told, I had a hard time finishing the bowl as I was feeling the effects of too much nicotine on an empty stomach.

The second time the bowl never got boring, but was just maybe a bit too strong for me. The person who sent this to me thought it may, perhaps, supplant Irish Flake as one of my favorites, but it did not do that. It did show me that Irish Flake was not the limit to how strong a Peterson blend could get.

And to the very strong blends, it is one of the tastier ones I have had. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes them strong and who can't get enough of Dark Fired Kentucky in their smoking diets. I may get a tin of this or two down the line to give it a fuller test, but for now I will leave it at three stars.

UPDATE 6-10-2019

I just got done smoking a full tin of this and after reading my previous review, I would not change a thing about that review, which is odd since I smoked so little of it before. The reason is that this is not a complex blend. It is very strong and very much a one note blend.

The combination of the Dark Fired Kentucky with whatever the topping is, will be the dominant flavor of the blend. I kept this tin in my truck after cutting the block into flakes and cubes. Once it is adequately dry, it actually lights up pretty easily. If you smoke it wet or fresh from the tin, it can be a little tough to light up. It performs wonderfully under fire.

There are really two reasons for smoking this in a small bowl. First, It is strong and a big bowl is pretty hard to finish. Second, as noted above, it is a one note blend and it can get boring after a while. If you are one who loves very strong blends, I would still leave this at three stars as I find HH Bold Kentucky from Mac Baren to be a more enjoyable "ass-kicker" than 3Ps IMHO.

After all the good reviews, I had to try this one. While it is a decent smoke, I don't see what all the fuss is about. While I did smoke the entire tin, I doubt I will ever buy this one again.

First, like a lot of plugs, this one is mottled to dark in color and very solid and tightly packed. Kind of reminded me of a hockey puck. It had the fermented aroma of many pressed and plug tobaccos, with raison or prune like scent. I could tell it was an aromatic but the flavoring is very subtle and other than a fruit like aroma, I could not tell what it is. This plug is so solid that I experimented between shaving some off with a knife and pealing some single leaf of the top and tearing it into small pieces. Both were easy to pack in the bowl but took several lights to get it lit. This was true even after letting it dry for awhile. The flavor was rich and full, I could taste the sweetness of the VA's and the fullness of the burley, but the strange fruit taste kept coming through. While I did enjoy smoking it, but to enjoy it, it had to be smoked very slow, I would rather it not have had the flavor added to it. I think the Va's and burley would have stood alone and provided a better smoke. I do enjoy aromatics, but this one interfered with the good tobacco taste instead of enhancing it. It burned slowly down with a steely grey ash and required frequent relighting to keep it lit which I found irritating after awhile. I never once was able to smoke it all the way down as the bottom layer of tobacco gained a lot of moisture and would not stay lit. I feel this was the result of the flavoring agent. The room note to me was more like a cigar instead of fragrant pipe tobacco and while not unpleasant, it was not anything I or others enjoyed the scent of.

Some really like this tobacco, I just thought it rather single layered and nothing to get excited about. I would not say it is bad, but there are many more that I would recommend over it so I can only give it two stars.

Perfect Plug? A perfect smoke, indeed!

Lovely tin note, of something raisin-ish that transponates to the smoke and spoils you with its fruity, mildly sweet and somewhat "warm" aroma. The Burleys lend a lot of body to the mixture, with some cigar-ish notes here and there, rich earthiness and some nutty notes underneath. Virginias rounding things off with its mellow sweetness and freshness, but the Burley is lead here for me.

The flavoring never overshadows the tobaccos, in fact I feel like they are in perfect balance and both take each half of the flavors I perceive. I also wanna mention that it ages wonderfully, I had 2 tins from 2013 and they are even more smooth and at the same time very rich in flavors. Smokes best for me in a cob!

Pack a bowl, play some music.. perfect smoking moment - 3P's! Ps.: I'm starting to belive the flavorings are raisins and/or dark fruits, along with some creamy-nutty flavor.. not in the natural burley's nutty quality, but moreso like a "nut-cream" flavoring alongside the raisin/darkfruit flavoring that's also mentioned in the descript. Anyways... I super love the aroma of this blend!

Update: This really only has a mild flavouring, but no other additives! https://service.bmel.de/tabakerzeugnisse/index2.php?detail_id=104605&site_key=153&stichw_suche=perfect+plug&zeilenzahl_zaehler=1

A perfect plug indeed. Beautifully presented plug of tobacco. Dark and chewy, the aroma has soft wafts of sweet tobacco and fig. It’s dense as can be. I cut against the grain using a a sharp blade. I cut it into small ribbons. I packed it loosely. The charring light gave a hint at the journey to come. The pipe flavor started light. The taste reminded me of a pistachio confectionary. As it progressed, the warmth of the flame melted the flavor of this blend into a beautiful chewy delectable smoke. The fruit topping accentuates the tobacco wonderfully. It is a very light topnote that tastes like its part of the tobacco, and not something artificially applied. Midway, it gives a nice nicotine hit thats a tad past medium in strength, but the flavor is full of refined, billowy wafts of perfection. I was really surprised how much I liked this pipe weed. It’s a bit of effort to prepare, but well worth it. I just ordered another tin. I like natural tobaccos, but I appreciate a good aromatic as well. This, and Irish Whiskey are the perfect synthesis of the two. Don’t let negative reviews deceive you. Try this blend!

This dark brown block of tobacco, freckled with tan spots is pretty hard, and it takes a really sharp knife or a plug cutter to prepare it. Containing some Brazilian leaf among the African Virginias and Burley it has a slight cigar-like smell underneath an unobtrusive fruity scent, reminding me of plums or fruitcake.

I usually cut a slice of 2-3 mm from the plug, which I then cross cut into cubes of the same edge length. After that filling and lighting your pipe is very easy: just let the cubes trickle into you bowl and tamp gently. After the charring light I level out the ashes and get the tobacco burning evenly with usually a single true light. However, an occasional re-light might be required.

As long as you don't draw too eagerly on your pipe, 3P's will give you a cool and satisfying smoke. Just tamp down the ashes regularly to keep it glowing. The grassy, tangy notes from the Virginias, the spicy Brazilians, and the nutty Burley mix nicely with the fruity casing giving a taste that reminds me of dark chocolate. Smoking too hot will ruin this complexity. The bowl starts with a medium strength, getting bolder towards the end leaving some grey ash.

Due to the Brazilian leaf the room note has a slight cigar-like scent, but also some sweetness from the Virginias. It smells more like an English blend than an aromatic.

Peterson's 3P is the most dense plug I've ever come across. You have to cut it pretty thin if you want any chance of it burning normally. If you cut it too thick or peel layers off the top, then it's very difficult or impossible to rub it out properly. You really need to take your time preparing this one if you want to enjoy it fully... otherwise you'll need dozens of re-lights and it just won't smoke right. But if you take your time preparing it and smoking it... this is an outstanding tobacco.

Although you may read about a "fruity" flavoring, with plum or raisin - don't expect a "typical" fruity flavor. This one is much more subtle and old fashioned. It's a deep, rich Burley/Virginia, with the taste of quality Burley first, followed up by lighter, sweeter Virginias. The fruit is there only mildly, it's a complex fruitiness, but not overpowering or super sweet.

Bottom line: I'm guessing that most of the one star reviews were from smokers who didn't prepare this one right... because when cut thin and rubbed out thoroughly, this is a beautifully complex, dense, flavorful smoke that I can't imagine anyone disliking.

Opening the tin I am greeted by a nice smelling brownie like plug, it smells fruity and chocolaty. I like to cut a flake and then use a grinder, it gives a consistent and flavorful smoke. The moisture is perfect for a smoke to the bottom of the bowl, leaving a white ash.

The first portion has a more Virginia like character with flavors of hay, some tanginess and a bit of plum from the casing. The Burley is there, nutty and woody, with some cocoa/chocolate but not as pronounced. As the bowl progresses, the Burley flavor slowly becomes more present, the smoke is now more mellow and the plum casing tends to disappear.

Now a warning, the nicotine will floor you if you don't respect a slow cadence. It starts very slowly, you don't even feel it but by mid bowl the nicotine punching will be there if like I do, you puff fast. Also the taste will feel lighter, overtaken by the strength. While at the beginning I thought that this could be an all day smoke, I changed my mind and will only smoke it as a change of pace with the right conditions in a small pipe.

I decided to further my knowledge of traditional plug tobaccos and had done a bit of online research into what to order next. I am into plugs and like all that they offer in terms of freshness and flavour over and above their flake counterparts so I selected 3P on the basis that it was largely Virginia with some Burley added to balance things out. GQ tobaccos had it on my doorstep the very next morning (Great service chaps !) I couldn't wait to pop the tin and was met with a smell very reminiscent of JF Germaine's Medium Flake. Very fruity in a citrusy orangey sort of way. OK that wasn't quite what I expected, but on slicing and rubbing out three small flakes the topping dissipated and was replaced with a complex Virginia aroma with lots of fresh cut grass and fermenting hay. Also present were a few dark fruit notes and after leaving it to dry, it had a smell of raisins and baking spices as well. It reached me very moist and needed four hours drying time but was perfect after that and the aroma was to die for. I packed one of my Falcon pipes and lit it with some trepidation, as stoved Plugs can be very strong. I was very pleasantly surprised as although this blend can be a nicotine powerhouse if pushed, It has a very rounded flavour profile with no harsh edges. Perfect Virginia flavour with all the complexity you could wish for and not overly citrus but with a fair amount of dark fruit, some chocolate from the Burley and a lovely layer of baked goods. Things only got better and it smoked cool and refined all the way down to a white ash. The room note was rich and satisfying and all from natural tobaccos. I am mightily impressed with this blend. It has everything I could wish for in a tobacco and has great potential for cellaring. My tin was from Scandinavian Tobacco, so it has less than a year of age on it, but if it is so refined now, things can only get better. Perfect Plug indeed.

Update:

After smoking this exclusively for 4 days, I think it is one of my all time favorites. It responds very well to DGT and it is the coolest smoking Virginia blend that I have ever encountered, bar none. A true 5* blend !

There are two Peterson's blends that Peterson considers necessary to distinguish as "experienced smoker's blends": Irish Flake ("recommended for the experienced pipe smoker", they said) and Peterson's Perfect Plug ("sure to appeal to the experienced pipe smoker", they said).

Well, I understand easily why Irish Flake needs such a disclaimer: after all, it's quite a high-octane stuff and is capable to send the faint-hearted into a nicotine-induced psychedelic trip. The reasons for a similar disclaimer are less obvious to me in the case of Perfect Plug, which is not as much strong as Irish Flake.

If Peterson really wanted to create something perfect I must admit they reached not too far from successfully accomplishing the mission. The blend which combines a perfect balance of good Virginias and Burley with subtle natural flavour of dried fruits and a healthy dose of nicotine is indeed a triple win. I believe it will appeal to inexperienced smokers as well. The only important skill they might need to master to fully enjoy the PPP is Preparing the Plug Properly. Fortunately, cube-cutting and gravity-filling (which I found the best way to go) are incredibly easy to learn. I need no relights when I prepare PPP this way.

Nearly Perfect. Highly Recommended.

Actually, all three Peterson's pressed tobacco blends (Peterson's Perfect Plug, Irish Flake and University Flake) are true masterpieces. It's pity they don't produce more varieties.

I have 5 tins of this that have been sitting in my cellar for over 5.5 years, they remain sealed. My review here is based on a sample if this that I was sent of this tobacco (approx one third of a plug). My friend who sent me this had allowed the plug to dry a bit, which may explain why I experienced none of the difficulties reported by other here about keeping this stuff lit. My friend also advised that he feels this may be a good replacement for the recently discontinued Mick McQuaid Plug (of which I have a quantity stashed, along with Warrior Plug which was also recently discontinued), I'm not sure I agree entirely with his assertion on this matter, even though this was a pleasant smoke.

The flake itself is a mixture of browns & blacks, the plug is very attractive in appearance, but I like the look of plugs generally.

The note I got from this plug on the nose is a sweet, slightly fruity alcohol-type scent. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it was very pleasant. The tobacco is robust enough to be present on the nose also.

Sliced on my tobacco cutter, I managed to shave off several flakes, and I smoked this both as a folded & as a broken flake with some rubbed out.

As I mentioned, my sample was somewhat drier than I imagine it would be straight out the tin, but the flakes were still pliable, and the tobacco took & maintained a light easily for me.

The taste is of the good quality tobacco, synergising well with the fruity topping. The main taste I get from here is like a Brandy/Sweet liqueur taste, which is very pleasant indeed. The tobacco progresses in intensity towards the end of the bowl, but the casing doesn't all burn off, meaning the mingling remains good until the smoke is finished. I would imagine this would go well with a good Brandy.

It burned to a clean ash with no dottle every time.

The nicotine strength was medium & I found the room note to be pleasant.

As this was a sample, when I crack one of my fresh tins, I'll update/amend as needed.

All in all, a good solid tobacco. I like it, and am glad to have my aged tins available to enjoy in the future.

Is it is good as MMP as my friend suggested? I don't think so, MMP is a magical tobacco. This - whilst very good - lacks a little something, but I don't know what it is. Maybe it lacks the velvety smoothness, but due to the similarities between them, I will be able to use it, to some degree, to ensure my MMP & Warrior Plug supplies last longer by substituting this for it on a day-to-day basis, and saving the MMP & WP for special occasions.

I will definitely keep this around for future use.

This is one dense plug!

When I originally got this tin, I opened it up smoked a bowl or two, and jarred it up. That was about 4 years ago. I recently came across this again, and decided to smoke the remainder of this tin. Moisture content was great for immediate smoking.

Tin aroma of rich, dark tobacco, some fig and raisin. I preferred to slice very thin and rub out. Rubs out nicely, and still leaves a bit of an oily sheen on your fingers. I'm excited!

As stated by Tall Puff O' Burley, this is a great blend for smaller bowls. It is a bit strong, but not overwhelming. Smaller bowl suggested mainly for being one-dimensional, not strength issue.

On packing, pack this blend loose! The initial lighting swells the tobacco quite a bit! After the charring and secondary light, tamp it down and you'll be all set

Slow, deliberate sips offers the best flavors. If puffed to had this can get extremely harsh and sour. Even with the slower smoking pace, this still offers volumes of smoke that doesn't have too bad of a room note. As stated in the description, I do detect some type of casing, but I have no clue what it could even be. It does offer a sweet, smoky beef-like flavor, if smoked slowly.

This blend is great with a strong, dark, French pressed coffee. Great fall weather blend, and smoking outdoors. If you like stronger dark fired blends, give it a go!

If you like bold slow burning tobaccos with a little fruit essence then this is for you.. I found it to be a very satisfying experience.. very consistent pleasant flavor.. a bit simple but big in scope.. preperation isn't all that difficult but you will need a sharp knife.. my best results involved letting the flakes I cut dry for at least a couple hours.. even after dry time numerous relights were needed.. for me this is like the perfect thing to smoke before bed.. it just caps off the evening with its robust yet gently sweet flavor.. the smell of it while smoking is fantastic.. not something I would smoke regularly but I did purchase some to age.. I think every once in awhile this kind of smoke is very pleasing.

This is the last of these rock hard, lightly flavoured Irish style plugs that's readily available in England, and this influences my opinion of it. With that in mind, let's begin.

This comes in a giant tin, and when you open it, unravel all the paper and cardboard to find the tiny rock of tobacco, you may feel that you are the victim of a practical joke. Fear not, this nugget has a density like plutonium and actually contains plenty of baccy - but the tin is silly and you'd need a rucksack to carry it around. I keep my plugs in a Wunup Baccyflap, or loose in my pocket.

The tobacco has a subtle aroma, quite grassy, new mown hay, with a hint of raisins. The way to prepare it is with a small, wickedly sharp penknife. Don't cut flakes with a chefs knife, you may as well buy flake, and it won't stay lit as well. Hold the plug in your left hand and cut thin shavings off across the grain, like woodshavings. Collect these in your left hand until you have what looks like 3/4 the amount you need. Then rub it just lightly to fluff it up. Don't rub it all the way out till it looks like a handful of pubes, but you want a mix of fully rubbed and broken flakes. Load your pipe, don't stuff it too tight, and put the crumbs on top as kindling. One match will suffice.

The flavour is gentle and comforting, bready and grassy, with a toasty, nutty taste developing as the bowl progresses. The flavour is mostly good honest tobacco, and should appeal to those who don't like their baccy with too much condiments. It burns slowly and may need one relight to consume the last crumbs, and the strength is about satisfying but not strong. The aroma is reasonably nice, says me a filthy smoker...

All in all, a lovely tobacco, and being almost the last of its kind, I'm bound to smoke a lot of it, as I love this tradition of tobacco preparation. Perfect? No, it's not Mick McQuaid, God rest his sweet innocent soul. But it will do lads, it will do.

3P is a great blend that I can imagine in permanent rotation. Lovely tobacco flavor with mild casing. Robust but not big-time like Irish Flake (though I love that as well). Good nic content.

My preparation is somewhat unorthodox but it worked well : peel off several thin layers and cut into tiny flakes/cubes with a pair of scissors, and rub out. Moisture content is somewhat high but burns well without extra drying.

I do love me some plugs. I first tried this years ago when first branching out from my exclusively aromatic diet. I wasn't ready for it's power or flavor profile just yet. But now that I've become a real pipe smoker, I decided to give it another fair shot. And needless to say, I found it much better and richer this go-around.

What you get in the tin is a highly compressed and cellophane wrapped 2 inch square of fairly uniformly dark brown tobacco. And when I say square I mean you could check 90° corners with this thing. Being so compressed, it is difficult to work with...patience my friend. Normally I use rugged tobacco scissors to cut a plug, but they wouldn't suffice here. Had to use a sharp razor knife very carefully. Cut some thin flakes, let the flakes dry an hour or two, then fully rub it out and dry some more as needed. This is the best way I've found to get 3P to burn satisfactorily and with no relights.

Taste is pretty full, with a smokey and very earthy character. The fermentation is evident and reveals a heavy presence of stoved VAs and dark fired burley. There is a topping here but I can't really place a distinct flavor on it, perhaps something almost floral. It hinders the tobacco flavors not a bit. No tongue bite at all, just cool, long-burning tobacco bliss. I can hardly wait to see how this plug evolves with age.

3P is an all-around pleasantly strong old-timey plug, and I'm glad to have given it a second chance. I don't know that it will be a mainstay in my rotation, though, because I lean more towards Irish Flake as my Peterson of choice. But I have cellared a few tins for the future. Give it a try...just be sure to dry it plenty, rub it plenty, pack it lightly (in a smaller pipe), and sip on it gently. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Appearance: I could eat it! Looks like nicely cellophaned piece of chocolate fudge. Dark and medium brown tobacco layers with golden flecks throughout.

Tin note:A lovely light-fruity and clean aroma with a delicate anise/licorice undertone.

Preparation and smoking: Straight out of the tin with no drying. Slice and Dice. About 1/16 inch cubes. Sprinkle it in with NO tamping; just level it off and light it up. Tamp the ash only to keep the ember going without putting any pressure on the underlying tobacco and you will be rewarded with a continuously cool burning, dry smoke with very few relights. It will burn to a grey ash with no dottle or tongue bite. Almost an hour of pure pleasure.

Taste: I am not good at describing taste but if you like the taste of Virginia and Burly you are going to love this. I would classify it as a med to strong blend. Smoke this in a thin-walled pipe and regulate your puffing (sipping really) rhythm to keep the pipe cool and you will be able to to appreciate the nuanced flavors and the complexity if this blend. I continuously sip this blend by taking small puffs or tastes as I call it and only stop to bring the pipe temp down (always keeping the pipe cool). Smoke too fast and hot and it will be a bitter experience.

Additional smoking note: I do enjoy this tobacco in a larger and thicker walled pipe but for a newer person a thin walled pipe will give better temperature feedback. I feel that many reviewers do not like this type of tobacco because they haven't been properly instructed on the techniques that will best bring out the flavors of plug and flake type tobacco cuts.

I opened a new tin of this today from my local B&M store. It had floated around at my pipe club and I had put it in my memory file that it was a different tobacco. Felt stupid with a senior moment. Opened up the tin to a very nice and dark tobacco brick. I was not in a mood to peal it off so I quickly broke off a chunk and tossed it into my coffee grinder. In 10 seconds I had the perfect cut tobbaco for my pipe. Filed it in a MPB GOLDEN GNOME Super Brebbia. First light was smooth and it took to the match very quickly. I tamp it down and relit. The smoke was on. It was a mild tobacco and paired it with Dumont coffee. Flavor was rustic. I got a lot of Virgina and a little spice. I had to relight only one time and the flavor stayed throughout the bowl. I did not get a heavy hit of nicotine and the coffee made for a nice smoke. My second bowl was slightly different as I peeled off and crumbled it into my bowl. This lighting was much harder and took more effort to keep lit and smoke. Flavor and taste was about the same. I think I will stick to the coffee grinder to prepare in the future. Never burned hot. Gave a good ash and my pipe stayed clean. Smoke time was slightly over an hour. I enjoyed it and think I need to go back to pipe club and thank a friend or two for correcting my senior moment.

Looking back, and being honest with myself, Peterson’s Perfect Plug was not an impulse purchase for me, despite I bought it locally after striking out on what I went to the shop for. The truth is, it had stuck in my mind at some point that 3P sports a “fruit topping”, and, based on my experience with Irish Flake, I somehow came to hope that 3P would be a less-fierce and less-oily IF that leaned toward Penzance. I know, right? Where do I get ideas like this?!?

Popping a fresh (to me) tin, I found 3P’s tin note to be somewhat muted, and it did not match my hopes and/or expectations, being rather funky and reminiscent of “clean” barnyards rather than floral or fruity, with incense. 3P smells fermented, all right, but more like it’s gone random and/or awry than anything done especially for analgesic effect. The plug is dark and quite dense, and it is moist in a way that suggests propylene glycol, albeit it actually dries quickly – like water - after it’s rubbed out. For my first bowl, I cut a thin flake off the end of the plug, and I tried to twist it to smoking condition, as is my wont with most flakes. Because the plug is so dense and moist, I wound up rubbing it out, then I stuffed it into my pipe and I lit it until it burned. I won’t bore you with the results of my first encounter. Succinctly, it turns out that I much prefer to thoroughly rub out and then dry 3P before smoking it. This makes it more like, say, Brown Irish X; not as strong, but that sort of Old-Timey, uncompromising, he-man type of smoke. And, despite 3P is nothing like what I sought out, and despite I don’t like the best of it as much as I like the best of Irish Flake, nonetheless I rate 3Ps 4 stars, overall. It’s deep and “dark” and funky and rich, and it stays itself from top to bottom. It’s strong and full, and – reputed VAs notwithstanding - I recommend it only to seasoned Burly smokers. Aftertaste is nothing more or less than the smoke trailing off. Room note is not for the faint of heart.

If the foregoing sounds like faint praise, it is rather meant to be somewhat cautionary, as IMO, the best of 3P is not very accessible, and it’s not really aimed at the Crowd, in the first place. OTOH, I would not have given it 4 stars unless I thought it has something special to offer experienced smokers.

Update, 10-14-15: I recently got into ½ a 3P plug that I had stashed in a jar for over 1 year. I’ve been smoking this cubed, in a pot, and I have to say, it’s especially nice this way! It’s fragrant and delicious, and a bowl lasts a while. But be careful, because it boils up like hot lava when it’s lit! As an unexpected bonus (I don’t know why), it now leaves my pipes smelling sweet! Now it has to go on my favorites list!

This plug was a surprise to me.

Recently, I've exchanged tins of tobacco with a friend, and knowing his taste and Peterson tobacco, I didn't have any expectations. I couldn't be more wrong.

From the moment I opened the tin, I knew this would be a good thing. Smells good, the moisture was at perfect level, you could cut pieces, rub them and smoke 'em right away, and the taste is ... delicious. I loved it. Knowing that it's Burley, and I'm not a great fan of burleys, i was ready for a dull, metal - chemical note of a burley. A lot of tongue bite, a lot of artificial flavour.

Well, It's nothing like that. Everything about it is perfect. I enjoyed it in my car while driving, and immediately after that in my smoking dan in front of the computer with some tea. Boy, that was good. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a tobacco so much.

Highly recommend it!

In a word, sublime. Not complex, but full and splendid. Coming from cigars, I've only been piping a few months, but THIS stuff is wonderful. Course there are a lot of great tobaccos. I peel off individual leaves, then crumble them into the bowl. I enjoy the ritual/ordeal. Still on my first tin, 6 more arrived today. I hope to NEVER run out of this fine smoke. I did stove one tin to experiment.

Revisiting the stoved tin after 5 weeks (220F for 2 hours 20 minutes (remove plastic before cooking)), I'm finding it sweeter, fruiter & more complex. I've tried cutting flakes, then rubbing, dicing into tiny cubes, but I'm going back to peeling off the individual leaves, then crumbling. I think it's a surface area thing going on.

A good, strong Virginia in plug cut. Do not try this if you are just getting started. It is indeed flavoursome, but a tough one. Very austere in its structure, no subtleties or exquisitness: just a strong, plain Virginia (far bolder and less sugary than Gawith's Full Virginia Flake), presented in tightly pressed chunks. Diffiult to break appart, but once done it can be a delight; cool, long lasting but beware. Sitting is advisable.

On one of four tins I received, to my surprise, I found the date "June 16, 2017." No dates were placed on Peterson tins prior to 2018, when plugs were produced by Kohlhase & Kopp. Given that all four tins belonged to the same batch, according to tax exempt marks, I will be guided by that date.

Appearance: the tobacco is a brownish-brown colored bar, similar to the color of oil. You can also see individual light straw streaks in the bar on the cut. The bar is very dense, and a pipe cutter will need a very sharp, unbendable knife to cut it. It is also worth noting that the tobacco in the pipe will somewhat increase in volume, so I do not recommend hammering it very tightly, so it can be smoked without strain.

Flavor: Very smooth, without the bright notes. The main note is a sweetish boiled dark fruit overlaid with rye flour dough and a bit of nuttiness. If you cut a slice of tobacco from the bar and then pull it apart into fibers, woody notes of cedar and sandalwood become apparent. A faint fruity aroma only complements the overall bouquet, adding a very light citrus note.

Taste: the extremely smooth taste of the blend hides the true amount of burley in it. The tobacco is so well processed and tightly pressed that the overall bouquet is very soft and solid, it is quite difficult to separate the individual notes. Nevertheless, the tobacco has a flavor, and it largely repeats the flavor: notes of cooked dark pears, raisins and apricots, bread flavor, some wood and a little bit of almond nut. As you smoke, the woody and almond notes increase slightly, joining the fruit notes but not crowding them out, and the bread note almost disappears. If you fill the pipe correctly, the tobacco smokes extremely evenly and dry, it doesn't go out, it doesn't bite, though it requires some attention to the burning temperature. It is worth to note that tobacco is rather insidious as to its strength: the first half of the pipe, though it feels a little stronger than the middle one, does not promise a catch. However, from about the middle of the pipe tobacco begins to gain strength, and by the end of the smoking it represents a serious test of the nicotine resistance. For this reason I recommend not rushing into it, not smoking it on an empty stomach, and being careful with the choice of pipe. Speaking of the difference in flavors in the different forms: in straight pipes the burley notes feel a little brighter than in bents. The tobacco has an understated woody aftertaste, and as it burns into a fine light gray ash, it leaves almost no moisture in the pipe.

The smoke from the tobacco is almost imperceptible in the room. It has a cedar smell and is easily dispersed.

What's the bottom line? Over the years, my love for this blend has not faded, even considering that, for me, it has quite a bit of burley in it, and its strength makes it impossible to smoke it all day long. What's more, it has now moved into the category of dessert afternoon tobaccos, which means that the supply I have can be stretched for a while.

Beautiful, cool smoking, Virginia Burley mix of pure delight with notes of Condor minus the dressings, very reminiscent of the old defunct Gallaghers Warhorse. Beautifully sweet and full smoke that left me more than sated and with fond memories from a lost world, spent ruminating with good old fellow pipe smokers.

Similar Blends: Peterson’s Irish flake. Delightful sweet smoke that leaves one very contented in both flavour and nicotine hit. My own personal preferences are for Burley Virginia mixes of this type and I find this plug more flavoursome and tastier than Reevor plug, which is very similar but for my personal tastes somewhat lacking in the sweetness that Peterson’s plug delivers. , Plug tobaccos are for the experienced smokers as preparation and correct rubbing out is essential to achieving the plugs full potential. I compare the flavour and smoke of the Peterson’s plug something of akin to the old Gallaghers Warhorse Plug that I smoked before it became unavailable from Gallaghers. , This tobacco took me back to the days of my early pipe smoking apprenticeship that was served among the old men at the coal pits that I worked in. , I bought the 3 p’s expecting to be disappointed given the somewhat unfavourable reviews, but I must say that I am glad I took the punt and bought a tin and will certainly be buying more of this and less of the Reevor plug. , Footnote, the preparation is the key to enjoying this splendid tobacco, I only re-lit the pipe once and then settled down to an uninterrupted hour of pure nostalgic bliss. The pipe full burnt down to a fine grey ash and the sweetness lasted till the very last puff..

Presentation: Peterson is sure using a lot of materials for the vessel of this beautiful plug. I'd love to see a rectangular package that evenly fits the square shape. Nevertheless, the plug comes in a large round tin with the Mountain Dew colored label. Opening it up it is wrapped in a tight cellophane barrier. This, along with Dan's Salty Dogs, comes super dense and one of the hardest plugs to date. Dark brown, oil in color and a few spots of brighter leaf. My plug, which I believe had a few years of age had some nice plume/crystals forming on the outside edges.

Palette: The 'brownie' as it's mentioned in many reviews, offers a semi-sweet Va/Bur note. Numerous mentions of plum, fig and prune which holds true. There is also a slight hint of fruitcake in the mix. The sugary fruit topping is noticeable. Lighting up, I get a great medium, rich and somewhat tangy Virginia. A touch of grass and some citrus but not too much. The Burley adds some great body to the blend and is somewhat nutty. A slight molasses but I think I attribute it more to the topping itself. The Burley here is a great partner to the Virginias and also adds a touch of candied nuts and dark chocolate to the mix. There is a light cigar spice on the retrohale but disappears after the first 1/3. The fruity topping is consistent throughout the smoke but does not in any way take away from the dominate leaf in the blend. Plum/fig compote maybe?

Performance: Burns cool and a bit slow. I find that depending on how you prepare it, you could have a very different smoke one from the next. I've tried this blend in many ways. I prefer a shag cut and let it dry out for a few hours and then load it into my bowl and then let it sit the night for the next day. I however do think that while shag cut is my favorite, it would benefit more from a fine ribbon instead. I will experiment more with the latter. A hair past the mid-point in nicotine and I like smoking this in a small and narrow bowl as the flavors get deeper and stronger, creamier as the bowl progresses. Not an all day blend and leaves a touch of moisture in the bowl.

Conclusion: It's a pretty famous blend and if you haven't tried it I think you must. It's quite unique in design and reputation. I'm still working on a tin that I bought from 2018 and only about 1/2 through. I also purchased five more tins after Peterson's acquisition of the Dunhill blends and it was a bit hard to find. I could probably get away with keeping these in the cellar for 20 years and open a tin every 3 or 4. Not a favorite blend of mind, but the form factor is really something else. It takes patience to smoke this one and is very temperamental in how you prepare it. However, given the statement, it is still a rewarding smoke from time to time when you want something a little different.

Tobacco for those with patience (or those needing to learn it). To enjoy this, get ready for a multi-day process of slicing, drying, rubbing out, realizing it's too wet, letting it dry some more, then... finally... smoking. Nothing wows me about the smoke, but the long process will culminate in a satisfying, if not standard, Burley-Virginia smoke. Tin note smells like crabapples. The smoke has a dull fig taste. Not one I will buy again, but its something I think everyone should try.

This is a very interesting offering from Peterson, and is a style of tobacco scarcely available in the United States. Upon opening the double-deep vacuum-packed round Euro-tin, one finds an inner polypropylene bag containing a very dense plug of tobacco, approximately 1 3/4 inches square by 3/4 of an inch thick. Its small size may fool you at first, but there are definitely 50 grams of tobacco packed into its compact shape.

The Virginia and Burley tobaccos blended here are distinctly of African origin, and as such are much more earthy and full than their American counterparts, and these characteristics are amplified by the process of hot pressing. However, this also serves to smooth off any rough edges and fully marry the flavors. The light sweetness of the Virginia is accentuated by a mild casing of fruit juice with notes of apple and perhaps raisin noticeable more in the tin note than the smoke. The smoke itself rewards you with a deep, dark tobacco flavor that is consistently uniform, but the experienced smoker will still be able to pick out the rich Virginia and the spicy, though not harsh, Malawi Burley with a flavor that sits nicely between air-cured and dark-fired Kentucky Burley, though with no noticeable cocoa note.

While it is not overwhelmingly strong, I enjoy this more in a small Falcon bowl than anything larger, as it starts to make my lightweight self somewhat woozy if I smoke too much of it. The Falcon also serves to mitigate any moisture issues, and allows me to smoke it without much dry time. I find the burn characteristics most favorable when I shave very thin slices from the plug with my sharpest knife and rub them out to a shag, thereafter packing it with light pressure into the bowl. A false light and maybe one relight through the bowl result with this method, given carefully measured sipping on the pipe and an attentive but light hand on the tamper.

I would recommend this tobacco to anyone who enjoys either Virginia or Burley (or both) as anything from a change of pace to even a once daily smoke. While preparation is more intensive than a ready-rub, it should not intimidate you and adds but a few moments of pleasant ritual to an evening pipe. Given that most of the once-common plugs of Ireland and the British Isles - such as Warrior, Yachtsman, Velvan, and Mick McQuaid - have recently been discontinued, it is a pleasant surprise to see this fine example on shelves in the US.

The tin I opened was dated 9-9-12 and was in the nice square tin that apparently, they are no longer making. Why, I do not know. This was a 2-inch dark brown hard brick and had a slightly sweet aroma. I was too lazy to cut through it due to the hardness so I just peeled off a layer. Not sure if this may affect the taste or not but it still smoked cool and pleasant. I also do not have the patience to let it ‘dry’ as some reviewers do and just crumbled it up and put it in my Peterson Tankard which has a small bowl. This has a really light casing to me and maybe due to the flake took some time to finish the bowl. I am lucky and have 3 more tins dating back to 2010 and 2009.

Great fun carving off flakes from the plug! I felt at home doing this as I've been a woodcarver and sculptor for many years. One does need a sturdy, large knife made razor sharp for best results. Caution advised for the inexperienced wielder of the blade.. Of the PPP experience, I kept remembering Erimore Flake throughout the days as the plug became smaller and then vanished. Beneath the fruity apricot note lay an undercurren t of raisin/figs. Altogether a great tobacco! But gosh, can't see myself doing all the cutting up procedures again. Hope they sell this as pre-made flake at some point. PPP rocks!

First attempt at a plug, and was pleasantly surprised. After reading the other reviews, I was bracing for a solid bout of having my head buried in the toilet bowl from the nicotine blast (after a nasty first experience with the burley-rich Royal Yacht on an empty stomach, I've learned to respect the N!), but my fears were soon alleviated after the first bowl.

Don't get me wrong, you WILL feel it, but if you've built up any sort of tolerance and, more importantly, take it slow and easy, you will be rewarded with the noticeable euphoric relaxation of a proper nic buzz.

The tin presentation is as others have noted: a dense block of dark brown, pressed tobacco sealed in plastic, nicely centered in a paper wrapping. Upon opening the plastic, I was met with a subdued aroma of tobacco (the dried figs and raisins, but not as sickly sweet as most) along with a very faint odor of fermentation, somewhat akin to a cigar, all brought together by what smelled to me like semisweet chocolate.

The preparation is fun, and what I was most looking forward to with my first plug. Yes, an adequately sharp blade is required if you choose to slice or cube this very densely packed block, as I did. Lacking that, I suppose you could defoliate the individual layers and tear then into strips with good result.

There is some moisture, but not too much as to seriously hinder lighting (I smoked this fresh, but would like to save some to age and see how that changes the experience). Now, keeping your bowl lit is another matter, as I had quite a lot of difficulty with that, but I attribute it to my inexperience with preparation and likely made the cubes too large. I imagine, as another reviewer mentioned, that slightly breaking up the cubes and mixing in more broken-up flakes as a sort of kindling would alleviate most of the issue.

The taste was at first monochromatic, like a straight Virginia, but darker and less sweet (again, semisweet chocolate comes to mind), but soon developed a richness and body that proved very satisfying, and a bit unlike anything I've tried before. I enjoyed this! I also noticed an aftertaste like green tea which was very nice.

After about 1/3 of the bowl, I noticed the mild sensation of my head swimming, and realized this was definitely an after-meal, sitting-down smoke. It is far from overpowering, but lightweights take heed! It sneaks up on you in this blend as opposed to hitting you over the head and being at the forefront like some others. It reminded me of drinking a Long Island Iced Tea, or more appropriately, a well-made, strong stout. You won't notice the kick until it's too late, if you don't respect the concoction and sip slowly!

Altogether very satisfying! I only knocked off a star on my recommendation rating due to the fact that the prep time and strength might put the impatient, new smoker off.

Still quite moist , i rubbed out the flakes with 3 fingers as the palm rubbing doesn’t work so well . This takes some effort . I let the tobacco sit in the tin a couple more weeks and now it was ready to go . I like it more with each bowl i smoke . Seems to smoke well in a GBD Dublin . Taste - Very bright citrusy notes on top with some nutty burley on back up . Not very complex but tasty . A little floral and spice . I enjoy this quite a bit . Zero bite . I would buy it again . "That's nae plug, laddy. Nao THIS is a plug!" Seriously, this is the consistency that all plugs should aspire to. Comes in the metal vacuum tins that STG are so fond of. Once opened, I recommend storing in a mason jar. Presented as a singular, dense, knife-edged brick of pressed leaf; smack your smoking buddy on the head with it, and he'll not be pleased. The plug won't mind, though. Depending on the age, it may be more or less tacky when cut, rather like stiff modeling clay. I personally recommend shaving off thin strips to-order, as opposed to hacking it all into flakes at once. Retains moisture better this way, and smokes better when moist. Once sliced and rubbed out into a shaggy ribbon, packing and lighting are easy. Generally doesn't need more than two good lights, although it does have a tendency to fluff up quite a bit. Pack accordingly. The topping is never in the lead, but never entirely absent either. The underlying tobaccos are stout enough to stand up to a bit of window-dressing, and are complimented by it. The primary tasting notes are of fresh-cut clover, roasted nuts, and occasional whispers of floral dark fruits. Doesn't evolve much during the bowl, but what is there is captivating enough. With a moderate cadence, it will smoke easily to the heel with little-to-no moisture and no bite. The nicotine is present and accounted-for, but not excessive. Lends itself well as an after-dinner digestif or a nightcap. The room note is not the best; reminds me most of a Nicaraguan Maduro cigar, with no trace of the topping. A pity, but not a crime. Readily available stateside, and not outrageously expensive. Not an all-day smoke, but easily a once-a-day. Certainly something that every smoker needs to try at least twice, if only to see what a "Proper Plug" is like.

The plug is a hard block of tobacco, but that doesn't prevent the flakes from being pulled out relatively easily, pinching them from one corner. But the work has not finished there, since you will have to continue reducing it to smaller and homogeneous pieces to be able to load the pipe and in the process you can take advantage of it to remove some of the thicker stems. More laborious than a ribbon, yes, but it will be worth it. Long live the diversity in tobacco pipe cuts !. In my case, there was no previous drying and it burned well, with some re-ignition more than average, but nothing that was annoying. I think it works a lot better by loading it a little tight, making it feel a bit of resistance in the throw.

The flavor is smooth and rich, mainly burley, with some sweetness from Virginia and a light coverage that gives it a fruity touch, sublimating the tobaccos a bit, but without hiding them, allowing us to realize that we are smoking tobacco. .

Peterson is a brand that doesn't make as much noise as others but does offer a good amount of quality mixes. Perhaps the fact that it is a consolidated brand, that its tobaccos are not in short supply, and that there are no rumors that it will disappear in the short term, hurts you when it comes to valuing it as it deserves. Even the fact that he reproduces a good number of mixes by the famed Dunhill can make Peterson undervalue, since all those nostalgic for the original mixes, for one reason or another, tend to say that the old ones were better (with good reason or without it, that doesn't matter).

Thanks Peterson! and keep up the good work ...

Recently I’m all on va/burs, so I’m going to give my 2 cents on this blend. Presentation is stunning, a black brick that will take your time to prepare a good bowl. I’ve tried slicing it in both ways, leaf by leaf and cut it in strips, or cutting it vertically and rub it. No big differences in loading and tasting it. Pack it loose, or it will jam your pipe. Lighting is medium easy, if you previously rubbed it properly. The first half is very satisfying, creamy, earthy, dark virginia makes an excellent base for the burleys which lead the dance. Flavours added are well present, and help for a creamy smoke. Unfortunately, there is an unpleasant change of pace at half bowl, and this happened with different pipes in different moments, so it must be organic to this mixture. I just couldn’t stand this, I think that the second half is the truth of a blend, when vapors of toppings and flavours have gone. This is why 3P is a two stars for me, I find these blends tricky and somehow disguised with too much chemistry on top. Still a great toy to play with.

Peterson - Peterson's Perfect Plug

A densely compressed tobacco brownie. I like to shave thin flakes from the end, then cube cut these.  As I do this, I notice the tobacco has kind of a waxy feel and this concerned me.  Also concerning were all the mentions of "fruity", "licorice", etc. that I found in prior reviews, in fact those almost put me off even trying this one. But these turned out to be of little to no consequence, as the waxiness doesnt translate into mouthfeel, and I found the toppings to be very mild at most.

This is some good stuff.  Dark and nutty and slightly raisiny in flavor, it reminds me of a heavier Irish Oak minus the perique spice.  The topping barely puts me in mind of Fox's Provost.  If you like either or both of those, you'd probably like this one too. Notes of earthy, cigarish and black coffee.  It has a definitely noticeable but not powerful hit of nicotine to a veteran piper.  Of course, it requires some preparation time first and then some drying time.  I recommend a slightly looser pack. Its not really moist but the longer you let it dry the better it will perform in the bowl.

I'd like to start this review with saying there is a learning curve to making this blend an easy smoke. It comes in quite a perfect plug that does stay very nice. I prefer to spend some time and make a ribbon cut little bit at a time.

The strength of this cut was more than I imagined it being. I would up liking it very much, but not quite your average aromatic.

The taste and flavor had me quite pleased as it was a fruity flavor and taste, but at the same time natural. The wife note was also quite pleasing as it was a pipe smell, but at the same time fruity and pleasing.

After you put some love into packing your bowl, you can achieve a long cool, enjoyable smoke.

Ok so my initial impression of this tobacco was that it was flavorless and and not so strong. That was a year ago! over the last year I have come back to this plug several times. As my taste buds matured the plug got better as far as taste goes. I quit smoking cigs about three months ago and put down my pipe for a month. After restarting the pipe I began to review all my tobaccos and man let me tell you that this plug is amazing. A little fruity but not as much as UniFlake and a lil spicy. It has a very full taste and lights well. If you are a cigarette smoker this blend isnt likely to do it for you because I believe cig smokers enjoy more pronounced flavors and struggle with complexity. If your first impression of this plug was not great just hold on to it and keep coming back to it.

I prefer to use a small bowl Downie and using a sharp knife, I prefer to shave pieces off of the block creating very thin curled pieces. PPP smokes wonderfully, growing in strength as the bowl progresses. I don't quite get the fruitiness that others describe, but that doesn't detract from this fine quality weed. Recommended.

Update: I must be a little slow on the learning curve with this one as it took multiple tins before I could appreciate the nice fruitiness of this fine weed! Good stuff!

Perfunctory Pontifications on Peterson's Perfect Plug:

Pry open the Package and Peruse a Plug in a Plastic Pouch. Pull open the Pouch and Participate in the Pleasant Perfume of Prunes and Produce Past its Prime, which Portends Potent but Pleasurable Paroxysms of Pleasure.

Peterson's Paleolithic Plug is so Petrified that it Pleads to be Pulverized Prior to Packing in your Pipe. This Perplexing Plug - as Pitch-black as a hockey Puck - Packs Prodigious Potential for Piping Pleasure but must be Properly Prepared with Pocket or Paring knife. Puny Pieces the Proportions of Peppercorns are still too Prodigious for this Potpourri of Pleasure (from my Perspective).

Once Packed, it is Particularly Prone to Punching like a Pugilist if Puffed too Powerfully. If it Punishes the Proboscis when Puffed Proactively, Pampering Peterson's Perfect Plug will Pacify and Please the Palate. Puffed Placidly, it Pleases with a Palpable Pungency and Pleasurable Piquancy. It will Positively Perk up the Piper who is Pooped and needs a Pick-me-up. There is no Paucity of Punch in this Pastiche but Plenty of Plaudits are due for the Plenitude of Panache.

While Puffing, the Perfume in the Parlor is Pungent and not Particularly Pleasing. Its Performance in the Pipe may be Problematic but Peterson's Plug Pays for any Problems by its Palliative Properties. No Parsimonious Plug, Peterson's Pushes the Piper Past Pedestrian Practices, into a Perspicacious Protocol that Pays off with Pandemonium in one's Piehole.

This tobacco makes me think two things when I smoke it. One, this is a neutered Irish/Stirling Flake with a little fruity topping. Two, this is remarkably similar to Stonehaven and if people knew it you'd never see a tin of this again.

Earthy English style VaBur. Nice dense plug. It seems a little wet when you shave off some flakes, but it smokes fine without drying. It is not as full in strength of flavor or nicotine as Stirling Flake. It's not as heavily flavored as Stonehaven. The fruit topping is not as blatantly raisin-y as Stonehaven. My appraisal is that 3P is kind of an everyman's version of GH Dark Flake or Stirling Flake, because those two are not for every man.

I would like it a little fuller and stronger, but I like stout tobaccos. I think 3P has its place. You could literally smoke it any time of day and multiple bowls if you were so inclined. Those of you who have chased Stonehaven and been unsuccessful, 3P gets you about 3/4 of the way there. If you can't tolerate nicotine this will give you a chance to see why so many of us like these nicotine heavy smokes without making yourself sick. 3 stars, the world needs more tobacco like this.

Peterson Perfect Plug upon opening the tin smells just like a subtle brownie. Not overpowering but hints of chocolate and vegetal nuance. It makes my mouth water.

Preparation is a snap and if you let it dry out, it is easy to keep lit. I have only tried it rubbed out.

The smoke is smooth as silk and coats your tongue with a creaminess that I assume comes from the Burley. The Virginias give off a little hay field and grassy aroma that is primal. It smokes evenly in that what you get at the beginning of the smoke is the same flavor note on which you will end. The aftertaste is quite pleasant.

Vitamin N is prevalent but not overpowering. It stays lit if you give it enough drying time. You kind of need to plan ahead an hour or so to enjoy this. My first bowl of this stuff was a hard fail as it was too wet to keep lit. Work with it. It is very much worth it.

A big yes from me!

I purchased a tin of Peterson's Perfect Plug in 2014. For the past 5 years it has been aging on my shelves along with a million other tins. So I decided to try it. Over the last week, I have smoked the entire tin. To start, I found 3P smokes best when cut and dried for about 45 minutes to an hour before packing it into my pipe (Brebbia bent billiard). The Virginias are definitely prominent. There is an essence of a slightly sweet fruit topping, but it is subtle. It complements the Virginias well. It requires a few relights. The flavor is consistent through out the bowl from beginning to end. 3P was a pleasure to smoke. I experienced no bite no matter how hard I pushed. I can see it being an all day smoke. Although not among my "go to" blends, 3P is a pleasant change of pace. Well done.

This plug is a straight up brick in the tin. Initially I got a dark chocolate kind of note from smelling the plug. After a bit, the tin note is like a sweet tobacco and it reminds me of that of Erinmore Flake.

There's some time needed for preparation since you need to slice it followed by getting it in a state to pack. I tried cutting into flakes and then cubes, thick flakes and rubbing them out, and thin flakes and rubbing them out. I didn't care for the cube method at all; the plug is so dense I was relighting every couple minutes. The thin flakes beat the thick ones.

Once you're packed and lit, the burley is the main element I taste. I get a nuttiness with some citrus overtones, though they are rather vague. It reminds me of a milder Peterson's Irish Flake.

First, there is a cellophane wrapper around this plug, so if you want to age this you need to remove it and then place it in a jar. Wrappers like this have pros and cons but it will slow the aging process. The tobacco is of good quality and old fashioned I get but it is far from complex. The VA's have some grass and citrus notes and the burley has some nutty, earthiness about it. The fruit toppings are citrus and slightly sweet. The nic is really closer to the med. level but the overall body is med. full. However, I find that the topping really mutes the overall flavor profile of the VA's. It is a nice smoke overall but not a favorite for me. The room note I found to be almost too strong. I smoke outside only and after finishing and going back out 20 minutes later it was still very prevalent. It will bite if it is pushed but there is no reason to push this one what you get with the first few puffs is all that is there.

The only plug avaiblable at my local B&M, i thought i'd give it a try. I was surprised by how dense the plug was. Cut a thin slice, rubbed it, let it dry for a few hours, the preparation is fun and somehow, all the effort and anticipation build up to a greater smoking expercience. Hard to light, hard to keep lit. I'd compare this mixture to coffee, or strong tea with milk. It is robust, slightly bitter, creamy, has some herbal/resinous undertones, and a somewhat sweet finish. I think i detect more burley than virginia in the taste. The topping, if there is one, mostly comes through the finish, giving the blend a sweetness similar to that of sugar added to coffee, that is, unnatural but pleasant. The room note probably wont offend and is rather sweet. Even if pushed, it wont bite. Depending on smoking cadence, i like how this blend can go from sweet/fruity to nutty/herbal, without ever becoming harsh. Leaves a lot of moisture in the pipe, even on subsequent smokes where i left the leaf to dry a little longer. Overall, very very satisfying, but quite a hassle.

I 've never tried a plug tobacco so this blend was a challenge to me..the description is clear...promises dark fruits and nuts.when you open the tin you get dark fruits earth and citruses.you need time to manipulate the plug ,first to cut it into small cubes and then to rub it.some drying time is needed also.lights easier than i though burns cool and slow.the moisture level is ok while burning.the flavours are very pleasant between dark fruits and earth.a nuttyness with some citruses comes out too.biting doesn't exist .the room note is not something unique rather than flat.the nicotine level is medium.the moisture level at the end of the bowl is medium.to me it's a worthy blend but not an all day because of the nicotine level and the flavours wich are very rich to start your day...i prefer it after launch.

How did Pipestud manage to review 1000 tobaccos?! PPP is my 69th contribution to our database. Honestly, I have a dozen or so that I am content with... I don't really need another in my rotation. But I do like to try new things.

PPP smells great in the tin...like...tobacco... It is very easy to slice and rub out: just use a very sharp blade. It doesn't need much time to dry. Two matches is all I need.

PPP makes a good volume of smoke. The room note is just tolerable for nonsmokers. Pipe smokers probably think it smells great. The casing stays with you, but it is a very light casing. Smooth. No tongue bite. Nutty Burley, like a mild version of Irish Flake. I don't taste much Virginia. After all the buildup in the reviews, the nicotine dose is disappointingly moderate. I don't detect it at all until the last third of the bowl.

The plug itself is a thing of beauty. The blend might be heavenly for Burley lovers. I received mine as a gift. I won't be purchasing any more. I already have 3 great Virginia plugs in the cellar. This does not make the rotation, but is recommended for lovers of Burley.

PS: PPP overpowers the palate, and is suitable as the last pipe of the day, or the only pipe of the day. Its lingering aftertaste does not allow for following with milder blends.

After a tin...several thoughts: 1.0) I cut this about like Irish Flake and then 'palm-mangled' it into submission, stuffing the mashed and shreddy mass into the bowl in three parts...followed by a very well rubbed topping for an easy light. 1.1) To all those sniveling about the harsh difficulties of cutting up the plug...oh, do come along! Quit your pathetic whining. If you don't like to cut plug...don't. Smoke something else. There's plenty of other blends out there. There! I feel better now. 2) To me, this is between IF and UF in the Peterson line. Light flavor (no, there's no cocoa flavor there, thank you...just a general 'light fruity' thing) so don't expect a heavy hitter...but better for me than the UF berry patch. 3) Moderate Vit. N level. Adjust your puffing accordingly, not hard to do. 4) This is a solid (no pun intended) entry from the big P, a fine addition to their line...provides Peterson fanboys a plug with which to play. 5) No - it's not like the bombs from the various Gawiths, but I don't think it tries to be. It seems more in keeping with what Peterson has always stood for (to me)...quality, moderation (except for the Nic hit of IF) and broad appeal. 6) It's not Stonehaven (darn it!). I was really hoping that it would be just exactly like Stonehaven...but easier to find and in plug form. Oh well. 7) Is it "perfect"? No. But then, nothing really is. Is it, "Peterson's Perfect Plug"? Well, I really think that this, being such a Peterson-esque blend and adding to their line in the way it does...for PETERSON...I'd say it was just about perfect. For me? Well, I just wish it was Stonehaven. Did I say that already?

I was anxious to try Peterson's 3 P's and found no problem working with my first plug tobacco as the idea of a plug was very appealing to me. The very dense plug was not at all damp to the touch as some others have mentioned. There was very little in the way of tin aroma once I took the plug from its cellophane wrapping either (only a tad fruity). Cutting the plug was quite easy for me as I chose to cut a few thin slices in the direction of the plug's longer side with a Swiss Army pocket knife. I didn't let it dry more than 10 minutes before loading. Lighting was easy, requiring only 2 relights along the way. Along with a solid tobacco taste, there was a mild fruitiness that I found pleasant. PPP burned relatively slow and evenly without any detectable moisture. Smoked cool, dry, without bite, and even to the heel.

Although packing a punch, I feel it is slightly behind Irish Flake in strength and with a different flavor profile. It is not as harsh as Irish Flake. What flavor there is doesn't come into its own unless there is sufficient drying. Good for when you want a strong smoke. I have always favored flakes and really like the idea of a plug. I like IrF better since it has a better flavor profile and 3 Ps can be boring for the most part. Nevertheless recommended with 3 stars.

UPDATE: 9-20-13 If you want to elevate 3P's to a 4 star smoke it will take a bit of patience on your part. I have found that after opening the tin and cellophane wrapping, I close the tin leaving the plug in its opened but loosely taped cellophane wrapping for a year. When I want to smoke it, I tear off sheets of the tobacco rather than slicing into flakes. You get very thin leaf this way. Then I cube it and fill my pipe. The effect is like putting miniature leaves into the bowl (virtually no thickness) and light up. It needs lots of tamping due to the thin nature of the leaf which makes it fluff up after the first several lights. Now if you REALLY sip this (and not because of bite) the flavor comes to the forefront and makes for a very lovely smoke. A lot of prep here, but if you have the time and willing to really stick to a slow smoking cadence, 3P's has very few equals. It reminds me most of Mick McQuaid Plug. I need to follow the same ritual with that one as well.

Top drawer. Not as burley forward (nor a "berry like") as University Flake, nor near as potent as Irish Flake. But still an interesting combo of burley and Virginia with a spice note that may be the slight casing cooked in.

A nice fullish taste (not really sweet) and must have more Virginia percentage that the other two flake offerings of Peterson.

I don't really smoke much plugs, aside from some C&D Briar Fox or Wessex Gold Block (Brick?). Yes, it seems like you must use a sharp knife and cut slices down like a loaf of bread, but as thin as possible (even if you can't manage a whole slice cleanly). Rub them a little and plug into pipe and puff away. May take a couple of lights to get started, but once she gets going she goes. Slow burning of course.

Better in a small bowl I think. I've smoked a dozen bowls (about half the little block). My wife said it smelled like figs in the tin. Not really that wet of a smoke but I do use a pipe cleaner or two with it.

It gives the richness of Irish Flake or Highland Slices, but without the potential hit. Highly recommend for burley type flake smokers.

Tin note of sugared plums and spices. Tobacco is a plug of marbled dark brown, brown and a little tan. Moisture content is great, recommend using a sharp thin knife or razor to slice plug and rubs out with a little effort. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. Flavoring is mild, with notes of dark fruit/plums. Flavoring seems to come from a casing as it doesn't really go away but remains in the background. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with notes of tangy sweet dark dried fruit, floral, fermented peaty vegetation, wood, mild citrus, creamy, spices, bread, sugar, nuts, earthy, savory, bitter orange peel, a sweet grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Burley and Flavoring supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

This has got to be the oiliest pipe tobacco on the market today. While everyone goes on about the glossy black appearance and perfectly rock hard press, no one seems to note just how oily this leaf is when rubbed out. Given the incredible density of this plug, getting individual ribbons as opposed to a sort of semi rubbed broken flake, requires attention and thin slicing. When individual ribbons are obtained, they are oilier appearing than some of the most impressive cigar wrapper that I have ever seen.

The plug smells of light faint plum and sweet spices. The tin note resides between University flake and Royal Yacht. After some oxygen and time it more closely resembles a faded version of the famed RY topping. The are dark deep dried fruit notes on false light and a persistent dark dry fruity undertone throughout the bowl. There is really no treble to speak of. This blend is all bass.

I found that thin flakes worked best for me. Cube cut barely burned and was tedious to smoke. Even when rubbed well, there is a nice slow burn, but a lot of relights necessary. There are woodsy, earthy, coffee, and anise notes that I appreciated. The plum topping is applied conservatively and only pops up intermittently in the smoke as a nice balance to the otherwise dark, deep smoke. This was more nuanced in a smaller pipe. Closer to strong than medium regarding nicotine.

Peterson’s Perfect Plug (3P’s) is anything but perfect.

I enjoy a couple other Peterson’s tobacco blends, and after having read reviews stating (3P’s) is similar to University Flake, a tobacco which I thoroughly enjoy, I decided to give 3P’s a try.

The tobacco comes in a small, pressed “brownie”, wrapped in plastic, and packaged in an oversized round tin. The tin note was faintly fruity and a little sweet. I used a sharp razor knife to slice off a few thin flakes which I noted were dark and oily. I then further prepared the tobacco by throroughly rubbing out the flakes, which were extremely moist. From my experience with University Flake, I found it benefits greatly from drying time. In this instance I let the rubbed out 3P’s sit on a tray for approximately 45 minutes before packing my pipe.

Lighting the stuff proved more difficult than it should. Once lit, some of the fruity topping was discernible, but quickly turned into a rather bland and uninteresting sort of smoke, similar to Orlik Golden Sliced, which I also don’t care for. Occasionally I noticed burley notes appear, although they were mostly bitter and slightly acrid. About two thirds of the way through the bowl and quite a few relights, I noted some gurgling in a briar that is otherwise a fairly dry smoker. I decided I had enough and emptied out my pipe, to discover a wet, goopy mess left in the bowl. Without hesitation, the remainder of this tobacco found its way straight to the trash bin.

I've been reliably informed that this is warrior plug, probably with a topping, I loved warrior and although I'm not over impressed with this topping, I still find it a good smoke, the vitamin N content catches up with me in the last third of the bowl and I'm assuming the topping is what makes this a little oilier than warrior, will I smoke this again ? Yes, but the topping brings me to think more in the line of 3 stars, warrior seemed to have a more tobacco taste than this rendition, also I'm not impressed at all with these idiotic round tins which I'm told has been forced on manufacturers so they have somewhere to put the equally idiotic PC labels.

17/1/2019 Update :- It's pointless lamenting a tobacco now gone, and as 3 P's is a very close match and more importantly, available, I will say that if you like the taste of tobacco and a reasonably strong one, you can do a lot worse than 3 P's and I've just received 5 tins, and yes, I will be buying more.

This is definitely a favorite of mine and it has everything to do with the fact that is is a plug. I love the plug form as it creates a richness and depth that you will only find in this style tobacco blend. This one has a mild topping similar to Mick McQuad Plug but much lighter and serves to enhance the natural flavor of the tobaccos rather than to act as an aromatic, so in that regard it is much more like a casing than a topping. I like to slice it into thin flakes with my pocket knife and fully rub it out and let it dry for no more than 15 minutes. I like my plug tobaccos more on the moist side as opposed to most other cuts. Rich, creamy and very natural tasting. Not overly complex in structure but not boring either, there are many nuances to contemplate. This is a dumb reach for me as I am always in the mood for it or some other similar plug. Lets keep plug tobacco blends alive fellas, keep on smoking them! The nicotine is satisfying if your a nic freak like me, otherwise it might be a little bit on the strong side. I like to smoke it in a large bowled billiard and I can easily get an hour to an hour and a half out of it.

Ok, before this excellent blend gets bashed too many times, let me fill you in on a secret. It's all in the preparation. First off, don't rub it out. Using a sharp implement, I use a very sharp medium sized pocket knife. Lay the cube on a flat surface. I start at the corners, making thin full slices from top to bottom. It's important to cut all the way through from top to bottom. If you only slice part way through the cube it affects the taste. Keep the slices as thin as possible. Stack the slices till you have enough to insert into the bowl. Leave room on top for a bit of kindling. I use some bland dry virginia flake for the kindling. Now using two lights and a final light tamp, give it a go. The word sublime comes to mind whenever I smoke this.

A very dark brown, almost black, cube-shaped plug, sealed in cellophane and vacuum packed in a common round tobacco tin. Like all plugs, it’s a chore to get it ready for smoking. I have achieved best results when slicing medium thick flakes and then rubbed into a rough Ready Rubbed. After preparing, I let it air spread out for about two hours. Lighting is quite difficult, but once properly lit you are rewarded with a nice, cool, steady and very slow burn, terminating into dry white ash, and never leading to any kind of tongue bite.

In my perception this mixture lies somewhere in between an Aromatic and a strong Danish Mixture. It’s a deep digging, powerful mixture with a natural Virginia and Burley tobacco taste in its base. There is a fruity casing, though. I can detect citrus fruit, plum or raisin, and some indefinable flavours. A layer of sweet topping accompanies you throughout the bowl. It is about the highest acceptable level for me, in both aspects, fruit casing and sweet topping.

“3P’s”, as it’s called in short form, or “Peterson’s Perfect Plug” in its long form, is a recommendable, heavy, tasty mixture, no doubt, there is just too much unmerited fuss about it. However, I gather it would be even better without casing and topping. It was an interesting try, but I will not buy it again.

This tobacco is exceptional from other pressed tobaccos I have tried for numerous reasons.. 1. The packaging: It is nearly the only plug or flake I have seen in a round tin. Which is more convenient to be honest in case you like to keep your baccy i... n tin 2. Tin note: I fell in love with it.. A rich, deep fruity tin note 3. Cutting: As always, plugs are a bit of a challenge, but this one is quite easy to cut and pack 4. Main Attributes: Rich flavour, good body and aroma My only gripe with it so far is keeping it lit. Maybe, I am cutting it thick, so I will keep trying for thinner cuts. Otherwise, definitely one to keep in your rotation

One extra note: beware while cutting and packing this one.. It can change the experience dramatically.. The best way I have found is taking very very thin flakes from it ~2mm and pack it like you pack a flake. For me, it was fold and stuff

Perfect is some claim but it ain't half good, this plug.

It's flavoursome. There's sweet hay, musty, yeasty bread. There's the occasional subdued background tease of indeterminate fruit. And a sporadic saltiness that is most pleasant.

Yet this blend lacks edge. I miss a little je ne sais quoi. It's as if the manufacturer has kept it deliberately a tad bland to please.

A lot of work for what it is, i was expecting something filled with flavor and dense as all hell but ended up with a mild fruit taste.

I got more of a virginia note than i was expecting, overall i didnt like it because i didnt think it matched my expectations - light/airy/hay like rather than heavy/dense/fruit, i could see it as a stepping stone in to darker burly blends but thats about all i would recommend it as. Try mick mquid instead !

I have to say, I don´t understand this tobacco. It says that the experienced pipe smoker will enjoy it; that must be it, I´m not experienced and didn´t enjoy it. I have smoked it right of the tin and it takes an awful long time to lit, it falls dull in the taste and I have to re-lit numerous times; its just not pleasant. Now, I have read that this tobacco gains more on the dry side, so after a few bowls with no success I´m going to let it dry some and age it for a few months (6-8), I will then come back to it and see what is all about, because so far I´m not impressed.

This tobacco's body is light and the fruit flavoring is light as well. I love puffing it top dead center over my tongue until I can tease out the fruit flavor which also reminds me a bit of plastic. I know that doesn't sound good but it is and very interesting. The plug is very dense so even when you rub out slices, it seems to smoke a lot longer than you might be used to (an added benefit). The nicotine hit isn't as much as Irish Flake, but since the plug is so dense, it has the potential to give you a kick after a long time of smoking. There is no bite even if you smoke it for hours.

I found this tobacco to be an overall pleasant smoke. The tin note was pleasant with strong sweet smells of Virginia tobacco and is very nice. The smoke was pleasant and full bodied but I found a strong nicotine punch from this blend. The taste was extremely pleasant and the flavor was neither too strong nor not present at all, but I found the nicotine punch very strong but not altogether unpleasant.

The smell is fruity, the taste is very good, particular. This plug is not for beginners, but only for experienced smokers. Anyway a real great tobacco, to enjoy after dinner, on a full stomach. This was my first shot at plug tobacco. The cutting takes some practice and a good knife. Something with some weight to it, so forget your pocket knife to start out with. I've smoked about half the plug so far, and I love this stuff. I believe it is a delicious, manly kinda smoke. Good with strong coffee or strong whisky.

The tin note is of tobacco, I haven't noticed the fruity flavor that has been described ny other reviewers on this site. It may be just sugar water, like the kind macbaren uses on some of its blends. The presentation is a little brick that kind of looks like a brownie. Has some color lining to it though, so you can see it has some different tobaccos in it.

The prep work is fun and takes some experimentation to get it right for you. I like it about the thickness of normal navy flake. I rub it out also, as my flakes rarely come off even enough to fold. You want to make sure that it is moist enough also. If it gets too dry, it will be very difficult to slice. I keep it in the same jar as my Irish oak, and it seems to do fine with no flavor blending.

It is very tasty, very full flavored and dark. It is earthy like soil and the woods after a good rain. The virginia come through with some sweetness here and there, which keeps it balanced a bit. Very savory kind of smoke when properly moist. It can smoke nice and cool, with very little bite. I find it may take a relight or two. It is pretty strong so I let it go out now and then during my smoke any way. It deepens in its dark characteristics when it's re tamped and lit again.

It is very strong as far as tobaccos go, so take it easy. It can make you need to sit down. I love it, but I would recommend this one with caution on merit of strength alone. Otherwise have at it if you have a good nicotine tolerance. I had noticed its classified as an aromatic on this site, and I'm not sure I agree. It does have a nice aroma to me, however I tend to rate aroma on the "wife" principle. It fails it that regard. Happy smoking.

Tin Note: This Plug not only resembles but also smells like sweet candied figs.

Initial Light: Lit well and evenly after 2-3 false lights had a hay-like taste at the beginning of the smoke.

Mid-Smoke: The smoke was really mild and easy to draw however not easy to keep lit as it had gone out 3 times on me. By the third time i decided to try some Delayed Gratification (DGT) and let it sit for 30min while I was having a meeting with John to Flush out Certain issues. Sadly upon my return i found that my meeting was more amusing then this smoke. Flavor just wasn't there i thought i tasted sweet Virginia for a min but i think insomnia was just kicking in from the boredom.

Bottom of the Bowl:Started to smoke a little wet, luckily i was using a pipe with a military mount and was able to remove the stem and blow out the juice. That solved the wetness issue but that same hay-like earthy taste was still there and showed no signs of leaving.

Room Note: After I came in from my meeting there was a sweet fruity smell from my pipe and it smelt rather good, however Im sure anything would smell good after that meeting (im sorry i had too).

Dottle: There was a clumpy like ash in the bowl not wet but clumpy as if not all the tobacco lit.

Smoking Duration: 1HR smoke time 30min DGT - This does not include the 30min i was struggling to cut this hefty block of tobacco into flakes and once again into cubes.

Overall: The tin note and the fact that it smoked smooth and mild while not leaving a bad taste in my mouth contributes to the score in a good way. However as good as it was to mindlessly smoke it, it was also mindlessly boring and didn't shock or impress me in any substantial way. With all the other choices out there i probably wont cellar this blend.

Recommendations:

Either buy a really sharp knife, cleaver or Nah at it like a chunk of dark chocolate. Because the prep is going to take your patience or your finger.

Peterson's other 4 star, IF being the other.

I do love this stuff...both versions. I live in Australia where draconian anti smoking laws have basically driven out any manufacturer with any modicum of sense. Surprisingly, Peterson's persist, although I imagine it is through some wholesaler. So you can actually get Peterson's products - from around 5 or 6 stores in the country; but I also bring in some tins from overseas (4 nogs etc) and the plugs are a different size.

The one's I get from Australia are smaller, darker and denser. Both versions weigh in at 50g or thereabouts, so no one is shaving off profits or anything like that, but they are different. Saying that the smell and taste cannot be differentiated between the two versions. I actually sent an email to Peterson's asking whether they could explain the difference but never received a response. Like a marketing department could ever be bothered replying to a customer...as if.

I cannot praise this bac highly enough. OK, it can be a pain to shave it down, and the Aussie version (sic) is certainly a chore, it's like cutting through mulga; but what you receive in return is worth the effort.

The strength increases as you go down the bowl, but is never overwhelming. I can't detect any casing, and how this is rated as an aromatic is beyond me.

A pint of Guinness and thou...bliss :)

The plug is moderately difficult to cut up, and I would imagine difficult to rub out (I really don't rub out plugs or flakes). Not too difficult to light and easy to keep lit. While there may be a hint of dark fruit, it's barely there; what is present is lots of good if somewhat monochromatic dark tobacco. The taste is very full, and may give the illusion that the N is a bit stronger than it actually is. Since I know there are many tobaccos out there I would rate a 4, the question arises would I rebuy this particular tobacco, assuming my tastes don't change much more. In this case, the answer is not too often.

I got a small sample of this from smoke-king. Mine was cut into beef jerky-like slices and not familiar with preparing plug using a knife, took to it with my bare hands and tore it asunder.

I won't go into detail here... I smoked it and it didn't have a big taste to it... just tasted 'nice'... I smoked some more to place the flavour, and some more and some more. Before I knew it I had finished the bowl.

It is not complex but made me want more of it. Charring took ages but was almost fun to get this stubborn bugger to light properly. I found that normal sipping gave off a little amount of smoke and flavour, very nice to tide you over, but then when I wanted a fuller hit I just relighted and then the tobacco hits you in the face.

The coolest smoke ever. No bite whatsoever. It is a bit cigary in the best way. Still feel I can't place the taste, or that it doesn't have much taste and I'm hoping it eludes me for a long time to come because I'm definitely buying more!!!

Update. I bought some more, and have since come to the conclusion that this is just boring for me. It is a cool smoke but there is nothing in it that particularly makes me want to smoke more.

A great classic virginia. Dark, spicy, yet sweet and smooth. The casing is very well done. This is one blend that will never bite. The casing adds a nice fig fruity note to the otherwise spicy, dark virginia blend. The only difficulty to this blend if finding the best way to break it down into a smokeable form. I would recommend getting a good sturdy, sharp knife and slicing it into thin, foldable flakes.

This is the second plug I've tried, the first being Revor, which I love with four stars. 3P is a fine smoke for me, too, and I think am getting a taste for this form of tobacco. I don't mind the prep time, it adds interest. 3P is a different beast to Revor; it's denser, and can be shaved very fine for rubbing out. Needs drying for best results. Flavour-wise it differs from Revor as well, which I guess is the Burley in 3P. Very well-behaved, stays lit and smokes cool. About as strong as Revor. A lovely smoke, & it's hard to say which I prefer of these 2 plugs. Another four stars.

My mind has been turning to plugs recently, which I had yet to sample, and a little investigation led me to trying this one first. Amongst all the plugs on offer, which seem to be highly regarded amongst those who smoked it, this one seemed to be more consistently recommended so I plumped for a tin.

Opening the tin and looking up on the little block of tobacco was a little disconcerting at the size of it, I struggled to believe that 50g of tobacco could fit into it. Not paranoid or anything, I dug out my kitchen scales and stuck the plug on and was pleasantly surprised for it to come in at 60g, can't argue with that. The smell of it is a good heavy tobacco, perhaps with hints of plum and fig. I then got stuck in with a rarely used kitchen knife to shave off some, only thing is when I was warned I needed a sharp knife I didn't realise quite how sharp it needed to be. Nonetheless, one trip to the shop to pick up a sharpener later, I finally got stuck into a pipeful and initially found it very heavy going, this is a strong one in terms of nicotine so it's best to slow down the smoke if possible. the first few smokes were quite a struggle to be honest, it's not that I disliked it but struggled with the nic-hit. A couple of changes of pipes have also helped, two briars and an MM Legend later and I seem to prefer smoking this in a cob, that's just my personal experience though so feel free to ignore it. As the plug has gone down though, my appreciation and tolerance for this tobacco have gone up and there is now a nice flavour of figs and plums. The room note is not to bad either.

So there we go, my very first try of a plug and I'm impressed. It's definitely worth taking the time to smoke slowly and get to know. Here's to more plugs and more 3P's, I can't think of a more perfectly named tobacco.

Phenomenal Tobacco! I had nearly finished a full review when Internet Explorer crashed - Doh!!! I am using Firefox as I write this second review and hopefully won't have the same problem. I am going to write reviews in MS Word and cut and paste from now on. This review will be short because I do not have the patience to write it all up again.

To properly prepare and enjoy PPP, you need a sharp knife, some patience and a full belly. The burley is up front and the virginias are more in the background. These are high quality tobaccos. The virginias do not have that awful ketchup flavor that I loathe. I wouldn't put ketchup on something that I was going to eat if somebody was going to pay me, and quite frankly hate to be around the smell of it when somebody ruins their meat or fries by using this worst-of-all-condiments.

The tobacco stays lit when packed properly in a quality briar. It does not need much drying. Sit back, relax and enjoy a bowl if you are an experienced smoker who enjoys the taste of quality tobacco and can handle a nice dose of nicotine.

This is a tricky tobacco. I have a very diverse experience with 3p. It definitely needs some drying. If I smoke it right after opening, the taste is somehow harsh, and turns little bitter in the second half of bowl. So after experimenting for some time I found what works for me. I open the tin and move the tobacco into sealed jar. There I age it for about half year or more. After this time the tobacco is much drier. It has bigger space to "breathe". I cut about three four very thin flakes on the longer side of plug. I do not rub them. I use the fold and plug airpocket method. I found that the pipes with small chamber 16 to 19mm work the best. You can also cut the flakes you are about to smoke and let them dry for a day or two to speed things up, but the result is not the same. If the humidity is right the taste is perfect. It is fruity and full natural taste. You can also taste a little bit of almonds. No tongue bite, and also easy to light compared to other plugs. It has a strong vitamin N. I would say that this is not for beginners. It definitely needs special handling and patience, but the result is worth it! Have a glass of dry white wine together with 3p and enjoy!

I absolutely love this stuff. Though disappointed when I opened the tin only to find a lump just bigger than a quarter the size of the tin, once its cut and rubbed out, it'll pretty much fill it out. Personally, I cut it into slices and then strips the size of a matchstick, let it dry a little then rubbed it out.

Since smoking this stuff I've been hankering for a cigar. I'm trying to be good but it's not working. I think 3P is the closest thing you can get to the taste of a cigar without paying the price for one.

The taste is strong but it's a good strong. And yeah, the nicotine will certainly make your head buzz for a while but it's great after a hard day! If you are smoking this somewhere where it's hot make sure you have a tall glass of Tequila and Jamaican ginger beer with plenty of ice. I think it'll complement its slight peppery taste quite well?!

Living in sunny, temperate climes, the adherence to the doctrine of copious caffeine and dependence on bull moose helpings of nicotine are foreign to me. N. Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England's northern counties existing in cold, cloud, mist, and interminable winter are just the places for the artificial consciousness induced by Nicot's lady.

Additionally, the culinary staples of shepherd pie, mutton stew, potato, and those offal delicacies sustain not only the necessary metabolic thermals for 59F highs in August, but build up the constitutional frame for shunt loads of vitamin N such residents seem capable of handling. Case in point: Peterson Perfect Plug or 3P.

If you live in Florida and sip Mojitos as you lunch on conch and field greens, you are barking up the wrong coconut palm. Instead, go for the plate of boliche, congri and crusty pan Cubano, because you will need to be an immovable object against the coming unstoppable force of 3P. Otherwise, the onset of sweats and vomiting with the resulting loss of fluids and electrolytes could mean that 3P will be the last thing you ever smoke. Before death ensues, 3P will ease you into a sleep so soft and sudden that propofol seems like a sledgehammer to the cerebral cortex.

Pressed and aged in Guy Fox's gunpowder barrels and an aftertaste reminiscent of a choleric's grave dust are just two of the flavor highlights awaiting you with 3P. There is also the piquancy on the palate akin to a sting from the box jellyfish. Not all of the most deadly things come from Australia.

In flake form, 3P burns like concrete pier pillars, but in all truthful disclosure, 3P is as cool as the same. Sliced thin and rubbed up thoroughly provided the best performance, flavor intensity, and smoke density. Small pipe chambers recommended for those with intact nervous systems.

While the handsome, dark brown plug looks more potent, its sister, Irish Flake, is stronger and more flavorful, as are SG 1792 Flake and G&H Dark Flake. Irish Flake is less potent than G&H or SG ropes and twists, the latter being stronger than SG 1792 Flake and G&H Dark Flake. Therefore gauge your qualifications to smoke 3P accordingly. 3P seems stronger than University Flake, Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky and equal to G&H Birdseye. Haddo's Delight and Escudo will seem “light and playful” after a romp with 3P. How 3P compares to Jack Knife Plug remains to me unknown, for now (Edit: 3P is stronger than JKP).

I also don't know if the Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English pipe men can really handle this devil's confection or if its is just a leg pull on the rest of us. Whatever is the case, 3P will tease your innards and gizzards enough. Sure, you might be a hurling champion of the world, but see if you can survive 3P before you beat your breast. If not, you might be in a whole other bout of hurling.

Whether its because I'm not used to plugs maybe incorrectly preparing them or whatever. (I cubed, I flaked, I rubbed out)

But I never took to this. I found it bitey, difficult and stubborn. But that again may have just been the inexperience with plugs. Comes in a very hard little block similar in appearance to tightly compacted jerk beef.

It comes in a cellophane wrapper inside the tin, and I must say looks just like a block of the old 'wink wink, nudge nudge'

Shame it doesn't smoke as well.....

2 stars, as a bit of age (3-5 years) and an improved plug technique by yours truly may see the grading improve.

The tin aroma is Virginia and Burley, couched softly in jam and prune / fig scents. As well as notes (floral) that remind me of some scented Lakeland blends. Very pleasant, the tobaccos used seem by their scents to be of good quality, and they dominate the tin aroma even with the fruit casing.

Plug is an interesting format. Take a sharp pocket knife and carve strips from the edge. Rub or chop the strips. (Must admit this part got old pretty fast, need a sharp antique plug cutter.) I had a little trouble with initial lighting, but once it got going it needed very few relights.

I taste the sweet, cured grain of the Virginia. Dried fruit taste at first, fades into the rich tobaccos. Floral, slightly soapy, flavors reappear throughout the bowl, but so subtle, so subdued - I find it fascinating, and quite satisfying. The Nicotine level is pretty high so be careful. A bit stronger than I usually choose, still I can't help but love this stuff.

I have tried all the regular peterson's and been mainly impressed - the only ones i was not keen on was "irish whisky"(more to do with its casing than the baccy) and "sweet killarny" which bit like a ferret.

Anyway 3P's;a very dense plug and moist to the touch(more damp).

First pipe;i tore off a layer or so and shredded in a bud grinder. My first impressions after getting it going was;very steamy and citrusy like pure lemon juice vapour - ;got up my nose like a fizzy drink and stung my eyes..

Tasted like lemon sherbert or bitter lemonade,,sometimes a hint of licorice,i would class it an aromatic at this point.

The baccy beneath the aromatic surface tasted between "university flake" and "dunhill light flake".

Hard work to slice, even with a stanley knife it was like cutting hide.

Room note was like lemon juiced pancake(atleast in my smoking vicinity)

I found this a chore to smoke and also difficult - it didn't want to burn and it faught me all the way down..(also on lighting it expands like popcorn and needs a good tamping)

I found it slightly spikey like it was wanting to bite, but not enough to stop me persevering.

Tried it sliced and in cube form to taste the properties of shape and the combination of the leaves together,,i have also stripped layers to see how that works;it makes no difference to taste because its mainly lemony, and the leaves are so mutually infused with eachother..

Leaving the plug out for half a day produced no improvement,,i like best;baccy that i can just open and smoke even if a bit moist,,and this was nothing special enough to justify fuffing about with(i had just been spoiled by my first plug of "kendall dark xx" which tasted like pure beef,,and i had also on getting bored of "3P's" some "revor plug")

I left "3P's" to dry out some more,,,;top of the bowl was prickly but gets smoother, but its just a "so what" experience..For a lighter smoke i would go for "erinmore flake" or "mixture" before this because i can get a reasonable smoke strait out of the tin.

Thinking that i wouldn't buy this again because it reminded me of "amberleaf" rollup,,;in a moments boredom i tore the whole block up into @ 1.5mm layers and cut them with scissors into 1/4" x 1.5" inch strips and left it open in the tin for 24 hours..

WHAT A TRANFORMATION!

The citrus vapour factor has left the building,,,;and what remained was a mellow, slightly fruit fragrenced, mild and smooth smoke like a lighter bodied "university flake" or a fruitier version of "dunhill light flake"

I could now taste the baccy for what it was and compare its overal flavour to semolina or tapioca pudding..(quality at last,,;to be honest all peterson aromatics have required a full day of opening before smoke to get the best out of them)

So easy on the tongue now that i forgot i was smoking it almost,,,;my problem was in trying to preserve it in its plug form out of novelty factor instead of dealing with it.

I am also impressed with what the "scissor cut" did to the packing and smokability of this,,;its virtues were liberated.

Burns to a grey ash with a few semi-burnt coals at the bottom of the bowl(i saved these for putting on top of the next bowl because they made good lighting material).

Would i buy this again though?,,;that would depend entirely on what else was available on the shelf next to it or whether i was ordering on line,,,also whether i wanted to smoke it there and then. I would grab university flake over this anytime if on the same shelf,,;i wouldn't actively order this on line again though,i prefer university flake's fuller body and its ready for smoking out the tin. I would buy this over your average OTC brands and save it for later and smoke rollup in the meantime..

Last note:-This actually smoked its best when completely dried out,i had to be careful on packing to make sure i didn't turn it to dust,,,;but its ironic that its best smoking potential was when its form was at the complely opposite end of the spectrum, compared to how it was first originally sold...(Destroy to enjoy)

This was my first experience with a plug tobacco (other than chewing in the early 70's), but I entered this with a total commitment to make it work and give an honest review. This is truly a good tobac, but takes work. I cleaved off corners with a pocket knife on a cutting board until I had a couple pipes full... Let it set a while and loaded in a medium sized meerschaum. I absolutely can't say a bad thing about it. Just Sayin'.....

Awful. Just bloody awful. I wish I could think of something nice to say about this tobacco but I would be forced to lie to do so. With thirty five years of pipe smoking behind me this is one of the very few tins of tobaccos that I simply could not finish. I'm struggling to find the words to describe the taste of this "Perfect Plug". The closest I can come is a charcoal briquette covered in road tar. I enjoy some of Peterson's offerings on regular basis but for my taste this one is just horrid.

PPP is a high quality Burley mixture: natural, earthy, cool to smoke, with minimum tongue bite. The casing is barely noticeable. The only problem I've found is that the plug dries quickly once the tin is open, making it difficult to cut without reducing the leaves to dust. Compared to other plugs, this tobacco is fairly mild. Still, a very recommendable everyday smoke.

3P represents is an interesting change and evolution to my smoking regimen. It's now not just about the smoke but the rituals that surround it. I thought cutting the plug and drying it out might be a mild annoyance but would be worth enduring for the smoke. However, it's now a delightful part of the mystique of this tobacco. Like someone taking the time and effort to cook a robust and delicious meal, carving and processing the plug heightens the expectation.

However, does 3P deliver? Yes, it does. It provides a cool and rich smoke if you don't puff away at it too hard, but even if you do, it's forgiving. The tin odour is sweet and fruity and it is echoed in the actual smoking of this fine tobacco. I really like the gentle sweetness during the smoke However, for best results let it dry for at least 15 minutes for the plug is dense and a little moist. All in all, a very desirable tobacco.

A rep for Peterson gave me some of this tobacco to try when it was first introduced. I put it out shortly after. By far one of the worst blends Peterson has come up with. Not impressed at all. Had little flavor and when I did get flavor, it was like a cardboard box steamed with 3 week old dishwater.

Harsh? Ya, it is, but it's honest. I am glad I tried this before I bought it.

To me this is a MAJOR disappointment, I love my burley and VA's, I love flakes and plugs but as a Dublin born pipe smoker my 'homees' let me down. It is very similar to McQuaid's Plug, the definitive all-Ireland tobacco over many decades. McQuaid's is fruitier and 3P's is a less cassed version. I don't get much chocolate taste from the burley. Many smokers dislike the berry topping in University Flake and the lakeland hints in Irish Flake, this me thinks is Peterson's solution to address marketing feedback. A golden opportunity sadly wasted, a new plug from Peterson!...what went wrong! New products rarely work when they are developed to close loopholes.

Slightly fruity, good full strength baccy, good quality leafs, but surpassed on all fronts by it's flanking flakes, I shall be sticking to IR and UF and buy some McQuaid's Plug when I'm back in Dublin.

Today was my first attempt at this Plug. I went into Peterson's of Dublin and purchased it. Took it home and started carving. I found it rather pleasurable to carve and it rubbed very well. I packed a half bowl and started puffing. I did not pack it tight.

Oh my good lord it is fantastic. A+ for this one. It gets the gold star.

It started well and only needed to be re-lighted once as I stopped a few minutes in and started up again a few minutes later.

Once I cut it and rubbed it I left it dry for about 10 minutes and BINGO.

It is a rich mature and almost aged smoke with a hint of coco in the after taste. A true genius in a blend of tabacco.

I can imagine this been a true friend with a decent bottle of red wine.

Highly recommended but for the seasoned smoker only so beginners beware. It packs some poke.

Enjoy.

This is not an English. There is no Latakia. Just virginia and burley. And boy, is it ever good! I would not recommend this to a beginner smoker. It is labor intensive and packing capabilities may not be up to snuff yet to produce a satisfactory/oralfactory smoking session.

I would however recommend it to anyone with knowledge of flakes and VA's because it takes time to appreciate it's depths of color and flavor.

I also recommend it to anyone who is in this hobby who likes to fidget with things. Cutting the pieces off of the cube is highly satisfying, especially when you know what's coming next. You get to determine your own widths, lengths and cubes. Cut it in the corners, along the grain, against the grain. Possibilities are endless. It's a lot of fun. Just have a very sharp pocket knife and get carving!

The flavor in a good VA pipe is so relaxing, the Vitamin N is a little higher than usual pipe weed, and the room note seems to be tolerable. It's something I like to smoke after a good meal.

Can't compare this to anything else really, it's just a good plug in and of itself.

Devilish to cut, even when compared to some other plugs, but I managed fine with a really sharp kitchen knife and a pair of shears. Sliced to tabac around 1/16 inch thick then cubed it with the scissors (this has become my default plug start cut). Packed nicely after about 15 minuted dry out. No trouble with lighting although because of the density of the cubes I may have givin it a more thorough charring light than usual.

Initially almost a mediciney taste comes through...not unpleasant, but like the aftertaste of Jagermeister or maybe Strega Licquer. Not at all unlike SG Bracken Flake to be honest, but none of the sachet overtones of the lakeland types. The tobacco sets into a nice mixed Virginia/burley smoke with some high notes and low notes poking in an out. Nose smoke is almost fruity in character and no bite (smoked in a small prince). The medicine flavor pokes it's head in and out (more like a spiced christmas fruitcake than medicine, actually...) presumably when chunks from my homeade cubecut ignited deeper in the bowl. At about the halfway point, the tobacco shifts into highway gear and starts tasting remarkably like Petersons Irish Flake does at the same point in the bowl. The virginias are continuing their chorale, but the burleys and whatever else are still singng strong. It is at this point that I usually have to put the bowl down for a while because of the nicotine. Mind you, I am no faint of heart, nicotine sensitive type person. I smoke pipes daily and smoked Marlboro Reds for 20 years and still occasionally chew a quid or two for kicks...and I have on several occasions had to put the bowl down and wait out the nic tremors...

Al in all a good smoke, I'd reccomend it to someone who likes the stronger natural/lightly flavored type of flake smokes. I'd say that it is most similar to some of The SG flakes, (Bracken and 1792 come to mind as similar yet distinct types of tobacco). NOT a beginner tobacco by a longshot. This wont be an everyday tobacco for me but it will certainly remain in my "touchstone" box and I'll probably get two or more cans sent over to cellar with my next online purchase just to hedge by bets against the inevitable tobacco prohibition to come...

I bought this along with two more Peterson tobaccos to try. Two of them reviewed elsewhere were unpleasant and poles apart from this gem-in-a-tin, and this is the only Peterson that I shall be buying again.

I cursed the difficulty of managing plugs, but persevered until I perfected my technique, and was very glad that I did.

This plug is smooooth, tasty, with good manners in the pipe. Smoked well from top to dottle almost every time, although after 3 consecutive pipefuls I still got that metallic sore throat making "Continental-processed-tobacco-tingle."

This one, I am totally addicted to, along with one other from GHK. Isn't is a good job that we all like different things ?? What a shame that there isn't a more accurate way of rating pipe tobacco than we have here. Perhaps a " Value per 50grms " category ?? This is tops ..

I'm tired of swelling the Government coffers with hard-earned VAT for nothing. Most tobaccos are around the 5pence a gram mark now. Extortion, and I'm running short of patience wasting my 5 pences on unpleasant experiences.

Happily, this plug isn't one of them, and justifies the name on the tin, although absolute perfection would be to smoke a plug of this calibre without burn, tingle or bite.

this is what pipesmoking is all about, work for your pleasure!First of all it smells great, fresh and fruity. It is easy to work on this chunk with the help of a pocket knife, cut down small thin strips. Rub it a bit but not too much. The aroma comes to you through the unlit pipe, give the baccy a little dry out moment, let´s say 15-20 minutes. First light - a bit nasty like all flakes do, but second light brings joy- good quantity of smoke, very good taste, quite similar to tin smell. Different to IF & UF in taste although some very nice hints of peated tobacco, better mixture for "weak" smokers, no meal beforehand requested, just pleasure even in large pipes. Burns down slowly even if the wind is trying to shorten your pleasure. I will keep some of it in my rucksack, even the price for it is a bit frightening, but the good boys are trying to suck our blood like leaches anyway. Nevertheless I recommend this to va lovers and all the gawith followers should also give this very well balanced product a try. That said I have my pocket knife ready again. Add on - I think after three tins - one of my favorite tobaccos, because smell in tin and taste of smoke are equal & that is simply that what I expect of a good blend - upgrade to 4 stars 12/20/2009

I usually slice and dice plugs, but this I'm rubbing and airing out. I don't know what has gotten into me. More time on my hands, I guess. Maybe this diminishes that fruit or berry flavor, maybe not, but it stays lit rubbed out. I've been smoking it in 999 fishtails.

There are times when I like being tested by the strength of Irish Flake. Other times I like this better. I am thinking this may be my favorite plug. It may be the perfect plug.

This is rather powerful stuff for me; when I get hiccups the first time I smoke something, that is a clue. I like it, though. There is zero bite (except to the back of my throat and sinuses if I let any of the smoke past my palate) and the blend is simple and mellow despite its strength. I did not have any problems keeping it lit, but I rubbed and dried it out pretty thoroughly. The flavor is more rustic than exotic, which surprised me after having read the tin description. I hardly noticed the topping in the smoke, but it gives the plug a nice aroma. Note: I believe the proper way to prepare this is to slice a flake off the end as thin as possible with a sharp knife or razor and then dry and rub it out.

While there is fruit here I say it's less "fruity" than university flake. If you like Irish Flake, University Flake, G&H Dark Flake, Solani Silver Flake, etc, this will do you well.

re: pipestud's post, I would recommend using a knife to make thin slices off the cake rather than peeling and picking. I have no real problem getting this tobacco lit and to stay lit. Also, I think the way the layering of leaves works when pressing a cake prior to slicing means you kind of need to slice it, otherwise you're just getting one layer of tobacco... I think, who knows. Whatever. Smoke it, it's good. Likely to become a regular.

This plug isn't half bad, and I say that as someone who has enjoyed a few over the years.

If you are going to feel bad about having to slice it yourself, maybe avoid plugs and twists.

It's a wee mite stronger than University Flake or Irish Flake, but I wouldn't call it anywhere near as strong as some of the plugs of yesteryear.

Tin notes and impressions are fruity. There are hints of Summer silage barns from the Virginias and a sort of plum topping.

If you know what a "malt loaf" is (it's a British thing), it is quite reminiscent of that (sticky, treacly, malty and bready stuff) toasted and buttered and the taste of that is quite present in the smoke.

I like to trim these little plugs down with a fine razor-sharp blade (an Opinel #9 works well) into small but thin and even flakes. I then keep them in a baccyflap (or a little brass tin) so they dry a little before I get around to folding and stuffing.

Others have said it all already so there's not much use in my blabbering on too much.

This is a very traditional Virginia-forward blend with Burley. It's character is dark (I couldn't use the word bright anywhere in this review) and it has that old-fashioned, sticky, steamed dried fruit (prunes, figs, raisins) present in the taste. Darker fired or smoke-cured leaves are also detectable toward the back end (the Burley I assume).

The full taste remains even and sweet through the bowl with very little harshness. I got a bit of sweet spice (a slight hint of clove) the last time I smoked it. Somewhat reminiscent of G&H offerings.

Highly recommended if you enjoy a simple, smooth, sweet but full-bodied smoke.

It didn't bite me at all but did need quite a few relights.

By far the most difficult to prepare of anything I have tried. Finally was able to break it apart enough to finish it in a food chopper. Also one of the most difficult to keep lit of anything I have tried, but Dark Star was required constant relights too.

Flavor is a a little smoother than many VaPers and cooler burning. No bite but a nic hit. Most Vapers bite me. I have a collection of rejects that only were tried once or twice before knowing they did not suit my palate.

Well known plug and maybe the most compressed one on the market. Takes some time to prepare for sure but a sharp knife will do there. I like to cut off small flakes which I roughly rub out and let dry at least one hour before packing it softly and without too much pressure. Needs some time to light up properly and may need one or two relights during the smoke

After first puffs you’ll be surprised how mild this blend actually is. From color and description oke is expecting a mature spicy nic bomb instead you’re pleased with a light floral scent on top of subtle sweet Virginia ground taste that only provides a very small amount of sourness and is more on the earth than the hay side. As the smoke continues there’s more and more burley detectable adding chocolate notes sometimes and the sweetness is getting less. Slow sipping is required and even if dried out and smoked slow it produces a remarkable amount of moisture in the bowl so chose your pipe wisely.

A well aged VA/Bur that can provide a nice range of aromas with a topping that’s not overpowering the natural tobacco tastes. Rather dark character that goes well with a strong Whisky.

Upon popping the tin, the packaging seems a little regal for the small unassuming cube of tobacco. A beautiful plug. Sliced a few flakes from super thin to ribbon sized and dried in the sun for a couple minutes. Loaded to the brim of my large volcano. This tobacco does expand when lit and took a couple charring lights and some tamping to even the top and then we were ‘cruising’ so to speak quite well.

First impressions - classic quality smoke. Creamy, refined. VaBur combo reminiscent of some Gawith house blends I have smoked. On the retrohale I notice some bread and mild citrus reminiscent of the Danish blending houses. Unobtrusive topping. Super classic, maybe a little tonquin and a touch of anise. Classic no nonsense plug. Strength so far is just shy of truly robust. Polo in pipe if that makes sense. A quality tobacco and pleasant preparation. I’m not sure if its my go to virginia but the flavours are developing nicely and getting more rich as bowl progresses. I can see myself reaching for this for a more full VA smoke.

This is a great and readily available plug. Like others have mentioned, it is quite dense. I like to thinly slice and then dry in the microwave. Most moist tobaccos are good for me in 8 seconds. At this point it is very easy to rub out into a shag. This stuff usually needs another 5 seconds. It then requires few if any relights for me. It is pretty similar to their Irish and University flakes. Overall I prefer Irish Flake as I like the smokier less sweet flavor. But sipped slowly, I get tons of flavor. There is sweetness, some fig/raisin, a bit of citrus and even berry like notes. It is has a bit of a nicotine kick for me, but it’s far from being the strongest stuff in that department. Just like every other tobacco, it isn’t likely to change your life. However it is great stuff for the money. I enjoy it more than many, more expensive blends. All that being said, I'm enjoying this smoke, and as they say: the 3rd time is a charm. Tin aroma was some sour diary product we have in my country made of boiled yugort called Qareqorout or Talf as my towns people call it. I don't think westerners have this kind of diary so I dono what you would be reminded of... Sorry. I've jarred the plug right out of the tin anf tonight after almost one year, brushed thin slices off the brick, almost like a shag and boy it's doing me wonders. No relights after the main light believe you me. Burly and cigar leaf are more prominent smell wise and Virginia sweetness overpowers the taste, alongside the Burly tanginess, which I don't specifically like. Overall, a nice and heavy smoke. Didn't not get any friuty note or taste, I don't know what all the others are talking about, Lemon, fig???... Come on dude.... For me this blend has earned a respectable position and that's all.

This is one that I am glad I tried before reading the reviews. Some of the reviews mentioned it tasting like charcoal and that was far from my experience. I sliced strips apx 1/16" thick from the edge like you would a stick of butter and rubbed it to coarse ribbon. After a couple of bowls, I figured out that it was better for me to pack it just slightly looser than normal ribbon cut blends. I like to pack it and let it sit in the bowl for a little bit to let it air out before I smoke it. Takes a little effort and a couple of re-lights to get it going properly, but once you do it burns quite nicely. Just a good full flavored smoke without all the extra trappings of the boutique blends. It smokes slowly so make sure to allow some extra time to enjoy it from top to bottom. Also good for when you are looking for the extra nicotine kick. Good stuff, I don't think you will be disappointed.

I'm used to prepping plugs and this one is as simple as it gets. Cut a flake off to desired thickness, cut into chunks and gravity fill. Lights right up and burns slow, cool and dry all the way down. Has the body and flavor of the high quality Burley-Virginia combination known of Peterson. Nice nicotine hit. I find it to be between University Flake and Irish Flake in overall body and strength and similar in character. The topping is extremely mild and indiscernible to me, taste is of natural tobacco, rich, smooth and nutty with a dark natural Mocha note that really thickens up in the flavor and aroma as the bowl progresses.

Recommended if you like University Flake and/or Irish Flake and a great addition to the Peterson lineup, IMHO. YMMV.

Similar to Mick McQuaid plug, but without as much richness or character. Not bad, but not worth getting if MMQ is available.

Bought this one with great expectations, because a lot of people said me this was fantastic. When i opened the tin there came a really pleasant smell of nuts and honey. But that was the end of a good experience. Too hard to cut, too moist, and the taste was not so nice...

I let it dry a little waiting it to get better, but even dried it burned my tongue, and although i could taste the nuts (and it could be so good) it was too empty a smoke.

Maybe i will try it again later, and maybe then it will taste well, but for now, it's just rubbish.

I tried it straight from the tin, dried, cubed, sliced, ground up a bit, chopped, etc etc etc and nothing would get rid of the horrid used charcoal, it tasted and smelled like i licked a recently used charcoal (including the bite) i had to work so hard to keep it lit at times, and others it just burned too hot and tasted terrible. The only citrus or fruitiness i tasted was lemons, lemons zested over charcoal.

This veritable plug was my first introduction to this form factor of tobacco, as I'm sure it was for many other pipers – the good news is that I am partial to plugs; however, the bad news is that there is a dearth of plugs on the market (GLP JackKnife plug being very hard to obtain at the moment).

Different methods of preparation tended to yield a similar flavor, no surprise here as logic would dictate. From rubbing out flakes to slicing off and cubing, the duration of each session varied according to net amount tobacco in the bowl.  I very much enjoyed shaving off strips as well as rubbing out flakes; however, the one and only time I tried cube cuts I nearly smoked myself into nauseous oblivion.  Needless to say this tobacco borders on being strong in the nicotine department and cube cuts can really pack a huge amount of tobacco into a bowl.

I think to actually make flavor comparisons would do this blend an injustice as it is not noticeably topped or altered in any way (despite the stated "berry"). The only true taste that comes through is that of a smooth but very rich burley – not quite bitter but definitely not sweet.

I recommend this blend to anyone who is looking for the following smoking characteristics: medium to strong nicotine, variety of preparation methods (i.e. not readily smokeable unless you prepare in advance), rich flavor but not sweet and finally a crowd neutral room note (3P definitely won't have people coming up to you or running away from you).

This was the first plug that I have smoked. I was very surprised at how well it smoked. This has consistently smoked as well as anything else that I have experienced. I was a bit let down in terms of fullness of flavor. I expected more of a hearty smoke (as I assumed all plugs were stronger). While I enjoy the ritual of preparation, I yearn for more of a kick. I didn't get much of a fruity anything, but this is something that I will keep buying, as it is the only plug I can find locally.

Peterson's Perfect Plug:

Another one of those ("Yeah, it's alright but not a lid flipper")types of blends. Nice tobacco and not too flavored but nothing in the caliber of the Kendal tobaccos (at least in the non-aromatic catagories--the only ones that I've smoked).Don't get me wrong it is obviously high quality tobacco- well medium high anyway to be truthful.I certainly don't find it "full-bodied" as the advertising suggests but that's a body chemistry and personal opinion,I suppose. I am somewhat spoiled in this regard with Gawith and Hoggarth's and Sam Gawith's more potent ropes, slices and twists.I haven't tried any of Peterson's other offerings but I read from others that there are more robust options available. I just shy away from them as they contain Burley tobacco. From many experiences Burleys seem to disagree with my taste buds.

The room note is something I don't bother with or care about but my wife tells me that this one is quite pleasant. O.K.

The taste(body) is there but again it is rather so-so. I appreciate the other commenteers suggestion about putting the tobacco away for some time and allowing the possibility of improvement. It's possible, I guess, but my purchases are ones I intend to smoke right away and some well known authors have commented the tobaccos have already been aged a good deal before they are packaged and sold.Consequently I just smoke the stuff and leave the aging thing to others.Whatever works for each individual smoke is fine with me.

Do I reccomend it? Sure but only somewhat. It is a good plug tobacco but not a great one and for the price I'd just as soon spend it on Kendal or even Peter Stokkebye products at this time.

As you read from the other reviews this brick tobacco is a bit hard to prepare before smoking it. I like the presentation. It looks like you can take it anywhere in your pocket. It won't dry easily and it will ocupy a small sart of your pocket :)

I have the patience of a pipe smoker and a modeller so I didn't look at how much time it takes when preparing the bowl with this fine blend. I tried to cut flakes and smoked. I also tried to rub it as much as I could. In both versions it lights hard and it is not easy to keep it lit. The flake version is harder to smoke. But with patience and several matches this tobacco satisfied me.

It has a high nicotine dosage. I personally prefered medium sized bowls just for this reason. It offers a deep, tasteful Virginia-Burley smoke. The casing is fruity and smooth but not too sweet. This blend isn't an anytime tobacco for me. It must be enjoyed after dinner once or twice a week. I hope it will be available also in ready rubbed version, I would like to give it a try.

This is a tobacco that despite the work of cutting to flakes, it deserves your try. A chocolate aroma is very present and just a little drying has to be done.A very pleasant and dry smoke will gain your appreciation as much as the others' in the room.

Sorry everyone but I was a little disappointed with this tobacco. I love Irish and University Flake but 3P does nothing for me. To me it's bland and leaves a sour taste in the mouth after smoking. Everyone seems to like it but I'll stick to the sforementioned and my Gawith's selection.

Great stuff!! I love the presentation, a compact alluring block of wonderfulness wrapped in beautiful white carton. I love the tinkering with a pocket knife to shave of a few very thin flakes. Finally a worthy target for my beloved Small Sebenza... I love the pure taste without the distractions other VA flakes present to me.

Is casing the same as flavoring? Because I notice the slightly sweet casing, but I do not detect any artificial flavoring...

The only thing I do not like is the name. I think the buyer should determine whether a product is perfect and not the producer.

Roomnote quite faint, pleasant and tobacco-y

Update may 2011 Maybe it's the casing, maybe the Burley, but i just don't come back to this plug, so after the initial excitement I put it down to 2 stars...

My first try at a plug. I sliced a few thin flakes from one end of the dense plug and hoped for the best. It only needed a few relights. The casing gives it a sweetness that balances the strength of the virginias. A faint fruity taste gives it some complexity. It did have more kick to it than I expected

Peterson's Perfect Plug is presented in a 3 5/8" high X 3 1/8" wide X 1 1/8" deep gold toned tin.

Upon opening the tin there is a thin waxpaper liner folded over a cellophane encased plug of tobacco. The plug in this tin was 2" high X 1/1/2" wide and 3/4" thick. It is a dark brown color(much like the color of a block of unsweetened baking chocolate) with specks and grains of a golden/tan tobacco. The plug was moist to the touch and very dense, you will need a sharp knife to cut this. The aroma from the tin is very sweet and strong tobacco.

After some experimentation, I found that slicing the plug lengthwise to about a 3/32" thickness worked best for me. This tobacco smokes better if it is left to air for 15-20 minutes after rubbing it out. I use the "gravity method" to pack my bowls, and pack my pipes so the draw is about the same as a filtered cigarette. 3P's lights easily and requires little maintenance.

The smoke is full and the sugars really kick in a few minutes after lighting. The flavors are sweet and remind me of lemongrass. The casing occasionally pops it's head, but stays very much in the background. I can not tell what the casing is other than saying "fruity" is appropriate. If you get distracted and puff heavily the nicotine will say hello in a big way and the flavors disappear. 3P's is not harsh and I suffered no tounge bite. Smoking slowly is the way to go.

Random notes:

My wife describes the room note as "pleasant and tobaccoey."

The ash is of a white with some grey.

Approximatley 20 bowls smoked in the following pipes: 1)Missouri Pride 2)Falcon straight with a Dover and a Meer lined Hyperbole 3)Charatan's Make Special Billiard 4) A Peterson System full bent 5)Tsuge rusticated billiard

In conclusion, I highly recommend this tobacco

I've gone to the dark side & moved up from flakes to plug tobacco.

Just finished my 1st bowl of this fine tobacco with a cup of French Market coffee.

I'm in love ;)

It easy to prepare, did take a couple more relights than my flakes but that was straight out of the tin.

I am a professed newbie, but here goes. I asked my local what to start with and tried a 3 Virginia blend. Smells nice, but bland. I remembered seeing this on the shelf and had already decided that I wanted to try some of the Peterson lineup. I ignored the "for experienced smokers". I opened it and immediately liked the aroma (fruity like figs and dried plums), but that is usually where the let down started before; smells great but no taste. Not this. I kept getting the same aroma hints in the smoke and now and then a flavor would really jump out at me; all good things. I think the room aroma was nice, but subdued. Then the buzz hit me. Holy cow! Good thing it was evening and I was not needing to do any serious work!

I went back and bought IF and UF too since they seem to all be somewhat related. I doubt I will smoke this daily, but no doubt it will be smoked plenty for the right moments. For a while, I will likely smoke this in a smaller pipe until I can handle the hit.

Great blend. Finally got my hands on it. Tried smoking it rubbed and packed in quick succession, not as good of a call as waiting 30 minutes for it to air out. Either way it ended up being a great smoke, loved it all the way down to the bottom of a bowl. Overall well worth the price. Reminiscent of Irish Flake, except a bit tamer. Exactly what I was looking for. Not especially hard-hitting visit from Lady N.

I tried this on Gnossos recommendation and I have to say he did me a solid. In the last year or so I had steered away from Plugs because of the pain in the butt factor but this sliced better than any other plug I've run across. It made great flakes, which dried with no issue. Fully rubbed out and packed into a Peterson Meer, This lit up fine and had a very full flavor. It was dark, rich and just sweet enough to be pleasant. I got a taste of the fruit topping only in a very superficial sense, and then only occasionally though out the whole. Burned clean and stayed consistent for me. Great stuff. Defiantly a bonus to the cellar.
