A special country tobacco, tasty, mild and aromatic.
Notes: Currently produced by Japan Tobacco (JTI), of which Austria tobacco is a sub-company. The new writing on the pouch says: "A special country tobacco, tasty, fine and aromatic."

I was given Landtabak (both Regular and Spezial) as a gift by friends coming back from an holiday in Austria (Adriano and Paola, thanks again).
Spezial (red-yellow pouch)
The civilized rendition of Landtabak. Opening the pouch there's a clear topping of menthol, or something similar (at first sniff it vaguely remind of those Medicated Snuff Tobaccos!) which adds a little green freshness that partially, yet very pleasantly, translates in the smoke and also room note gets benefits; unluckily the topping vanishes from the pouch in a few days. The basic tobacco seems more or less the same of its brother “Regular/brown” but softer to the touch (little to none stems), with higher moisture and a different balancing: rounder, smoother and milder. The meadow-grazing vibe is still there but on a new dimension: more a fresh cut grass note, rather than a generic hay-straw-earth dominated flavor. Definitely Spezial is more refined and interesting than "regular-brown" LT, recommended.

In my former review to Land Tabak I have put some premises and set some comparisons between LT and his brother Landtabak Spezial.
Let's go to the smoking experience.
A different Il Duca - large bowled half bent black sandblasted fancy Dublin - has been used.
The same easy lighting and behaviour as LT. But LS is just smoking differenly: the main player is the Oriental weed. Spicy and flowerish, some faint soapy and peppery notes to the tongue and the palate. Not sweet but soft and pleasant. The nose is tickled by spicy notes. The other leaves are just supporting the soloist. The Kentucky makes itself show here and there, mostly after mid-bowl, but with elegance. The strenght is a notch milder, the body is more refined and elegant.
Just like LT, LS smokes dry until the bottom leaving a brighter ash.
Recommended. Landtabak Spezial may just have a greater appeal than its brother.

Opening the pouch: spice, sweetness and some smokiness. A various-coloured, medium ribbon is inside, with notable amounts of KY, Orientals and what might be Java. Stuffing and maintenance are as to be expected: stuff tightly, prefer wider bowls, sip gently, and light up for a tasty, spicy and interesting smoke, with all components taking turns in popping up and then retreating into the overall experience.
I have nothing but bright, dry ashes left at the end—and a hankering for more. Solid thumbs-up from me, very highly recommended for the orientophile.

If you ever come to visit Austria this one is a must! It is one of the longest running brands here and that´s for a reason! When I purchased it for the first time is was really surprised how cheap it was. The pouch aroma reminds me of hay, staples, meadows etc It is easy to fill, easy to light and burns fast and hot. The taste is just excellent! Surprisingly mild with a nice natural sweetness, just a little floral topping. At midbowl it turns to roasted nuts and ther´s allways a natural tobacco taste in it. This perfect blend for beginners and very suitable for small pipes and also smokable in "Gesteckpfeifen". I use it to mix it with blends that are hard to stay lit as well. The only drawback is the roomnote that reminds me of something i shouldn´t mention here... Highly recomended!!!

What is this? What is that rating? For this horsesh*t? This tobacco is horrible. Smells like parsley mixed with tee, but what is even worse, it also tastes like parsley. I can´t detect any tobacco, any good smell. Just nothing. It´s unsmokable.

This is a rather tasty, rather mild, rather dry tobacco. Easy to pack, to light, to smoke. The ash was light and easy to get out of the pipe. It burnt pretty fast and hot, maybe due to the wind that was blowing. I had to let it go out at least once and relight it a couple of times. But I liked that too.
This Tobacco is a solid blend of hardly topped tastiness. And it's an easy smoke for everone, especially recommended for pipe beginners.

The freshly opened pack gives off a quite menthol-like scent, much like a topping, but dissolves quickly.
Packing and lighting is a dream. This tobacco burns and leaves just ashes behind, as it should. Be sure to pack it rather tightly for a smooth and slow smoke.
From time to time I like this hand-blended with some 10th to 7th part of Stanislaw Balkan Latakia for my "peon's English blend". Very tasty.
But to the tobacco itself - something mighty fine which Austria would be wise to export. Rather we riddle ourselves with guilt and value everything higher that doesn't come from our country... strange days! The description of Landtabak Spezial on this site says it's a "Burley, Kentucky, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia" blend. Maybe, but if this is true, all sorts were air-cured only. Sweetness prevails, but nuttiness accompanies, and loyally it does. A fine daily driver, light on palate and tongue, a really rural tobacco blend: It never disappoints, never tries to stand out.
The room note is tolerable, but sometimes it evolves into something dramatically nitrous. This is the reason for its loss of a star in my review.
Nicotine content is medium. No bad experiences yet, even smoking it daily.
Landtabak is very cheap, even compared to shag blends for rolling your own cigarettes. I am a cigarette smoker, and this is my blend to roll; even the broad ribbon cut doesn't spoil the experience.
