A very harmonious ready rubbed tobacco dominated by the selected burley tobaccos and with a minor part of Virginia and the original Mac Baren Cavendish. In this blend the tobaccos are adjusted to bring out the slight natural sweetness and with the tender note of chocolate - which is found in all excellent burley tobaccos.
Notes: Known as "Harmony" in Europe.

The chocolate from the earthy, woody burley is mild, and also provides light molasses and nuttiness. The tart and tangy citrusy, grassy, hay-like, bready Virginia is a supporting player. The sugary sweet black cavendish underscores the experience. There's a little spice, honey, grass, citrus and earth from the dark gold Virginia cavendish in the background. The chocolate topping mildly sublimates the tobaccos. The strength is a couple of steps short of the center of mild to medium. The taste level is in that center. The nic-hit is mild. It burns at a slightly more than moderate rate for a broken flake with a very consistent chocolate sweet, grassy, mildly spicy flavor. Requires few relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. The spice from this Dutch-style blend may tingle the tongue of a fast puffer, so I recommend a slow cadence. Has a pleasant short lived after taste, and room note. An all day smoke.
I've smoked both a fresh sample, and a 1978 sample. The aging effect is interesting. It's much more spicier and sweeter with a deeper taste, like the fresh version on steroids.

Oh, my! Mac Baren scores BIG with this one! As someone who struggles to find a Mac Baren blend that is better than "ok", this is a real find!
Mostly burley but with a bit of virginia and cavendish, this smokes like a classic straight burley... robust, flavorful, interesting. But it develops like a virginia blend, starting out with a mild sweetness that becomes bolder down the bowl. As the description states, there is a hint of darker chocolate sweetness as well as a beautiful burley nuttiness that is absolutely irresistable! This is one excellent tobacco!
Smoked slowly, this one sings! As I smoke all tobaccos I intend to rate at varying degrees of vigor, I should say that this one will bite if smoked at anything beyond a moderate level. Even slowly, there was a slight hint of sting. But sit back and puff slowly and methodically and this blend is one of the best I've ever smoked. From a guy who was about to write off Mac Baren tobaccos, this one is a keeper!

A Burley and Virginia combination that has a casing that simply puts the contents in a class by itself.
Symphony is a broken flake that loads easily and burns evenly. It is a cool blend if smoked on the slow side. A revved up puffing cadence will attract the heat. I also detected a smidgen of added flavoring in the natural, Mac Baren's sort of way.
This is not a bad smoke at all!

Pipe smoking never ceases to amaze me. I was expecting a Burley forward VaBur and was surprised to get a Virginia forward VaBur. Thinking on it I realized that most, if not all, were smoking this in briars. As some of you may know, I use only cobs unless I'm using a briar in an experiment.
I unretired a briar, loaded it up and, sure enough, got a nice Burley forward VaBur. Rich nutty flavor with the Virginias providing a sweet backdrop. In my well used cobs I get a sweet, citrusy Virginia forward VaBur with the Burley providing a nutty background. In both cases I only get the chocolate topping in the aftertaste.
It really does matter what you smoke this in. It's not only very tasty, it's versatile providing two blends in one depending on the pipe. It needs to be smoked slowly and gently to get the most out of it. Pushing this one is a really bad idea. It will lose it's flavor and become a blowtorch. A very interesting smoke.
Mild to medium in body. Medium in taste. Flavoring is extremely mild. Burns very well.
EDIT: In my excitement I forgot to mention the Cavendish. In the cob it's barely noticed. In the briar it sits between the Burley and the Virginias providing a smooth, toasty note.

The negative reviews about this blend are unumerous and most contain fair criticism, but I feel they don't do this blend justice.
Here's how to avoid a hot, biting, monochromatic smoke with this blend: (By the way, I bought this in bulk; tin qualities may be different for this tobacco)
1. Let it dry for at least 10 minutes 2. Rub it out a little. It's called ready rubbed, but there are some big pieces and long strands. Rub it out a little. 3. Pack it lightly and loosely. 4. In a corncob pipe 5. Light and take long, slow, gentle draws.
I am very sensitive to tongue bite, but I didn't have any problems with this. An initial nip at the start of the bowl reminded me to back off, and I did with great results.
Is it"flat?" Only if one's taste buds are dead. There is a subtle interplay between the grassy sweet-tart Virginias and the solid, malty and chocolatey burleys.
Is it topped? Contrary to the description here, I don't think so. MacBarren says it is not cased, and I believe them. (The cavendish component however has been treated with sugar water/honey as part of the process). But no cocoa topping is present. You can take a small bit of leaf and actually taste it with your tongue (don't swallow the saliva...spit it out or risk nausea). You won't get any cocoa on your tongue. I'm very sure the chocolate notes are natural to the burleys. I rate this as 3 stars with caveats. Rub it, dry it, baby it a little, and smoke it in a cobb. You'll enjoy it. Recommended.

I’ve been smoking MB Symphony for 40+ yrs & highly applaud it.. the tin presentation is lovely; aroma is nutty, sweet & spicy with overtones of molasses. It packs well in a medium fashion, smokes nearly an entire pipe w/o relighting & room note is sumptuous & enjoyed by others —- even non-smokers. It burns to a nice clean white ash. This is to be savored like anything of quality—-so drawing excessively will B I T E ....it has been well received by friends & easily becomes a go-to tobac. I rate it a 3.5.

Mac Baren - Symphony.
When I opened this I was of the mind it was an aromatic ribbon, never mind, it's a good blend, I'm happy I messed up, lol!
It's quite a coarse broken flake, which has a good moisture amount when fresh, is medium brown in colour, with a tin-note not too suggestive of an added flavouring; in this case chocolate. Due to the size of the broken flakes I give a pinch a final rub before smoking any.
I enjoy the flavour of Symphony a great deal: it's mainly the tobaccos, with a tiny proportion of added flavouring. The Burley, to me, seems heavier in weight compared to the others. The chocolate is light; it seems more like a slight sweetness, rather than a definite chocolate addition. I don't get any tongue bite and it burns even and steady, but I have a problem with the heat; it's not the hottest I've had, but it does require a bit of a gentle technique.
I find the nicotine medium, and the room-note pleasant.
Although this isn't totally perfect, I'll happily highly recommend it!
Four stars.

MacBaren Symphony is a burley/Virginia/cavendish mixture which is marketed outside of the United States as Harmony. There seems to be some sort of copyright issue with the Harmony moniker in the U.S.
Pop the tin and you discover a ruddy brown broken flake with a distinct fermented raisin or fig smell characteristic of many MacBaren tobaccos. The MacBaren broken flake presents a fairly rough cut, and I usually rub it out some more, With a bit of the tobacco rubbed out at the top pf the bowl it will light easily enough in its natural state, but you will probably need several relights during the smoke. Rubbed out you have a good chance of smoking the entire bowl without relighting.
The aroma presents a quite pleasant natural tobacco smell that by and large most will find pleasant. As with other MacBaren offerings, I personally do not encounter bite problems when I smoke Symphony with a well modulated puffing rate. Nevertheless I must note that a fairly significant number of pipe smokers encounter bite problems with the MacBaren blends, either because of extreme tongue sensitivity or due to the state of their personal body chemistry.
Symphony is a burley forward blend. The burley component presents some note of chocolate and a bit of cashew nuttiness. As with the entire MacBaren line the quality of the leaf used is high.
The Virginia portion of the mixture is present in a more than negligible amount and offers a mildly sweet haylike contribution to the smoke.
The cavendish is the MacBaren Original Cavendish, which is burley that has been pressed and fermented down to a blackened state and then cased with a honey-like flavoring which is in fact (at least primarily) maple sugar water. The sweetened cavendish creates what I would term a semi-aromatic smoke, although it is at least as strong as that used in Scottish Mixture, which MacBaren rates as a light aromatic.
The Harmony moniker fits this blend more appropriately than Symphony. The constituent tobaccos offer their contributions in a mellow in and out harmonious fashion. Symphony suggests great variations ranging from restrained to bombastic, and that is not the case here. It burns to a light grayish ash with little moisture.
I find it difficult to rate Symphony. For me personally it is a solid three on a four star rating for I do enjoy burley forward blends. I suspect most pipe smokers who include and enjoy burley frequently in their puffing experience would also rate Symphony as a three star. But for those who have little affinity for burley based blends, I suspect the conclusion would be that this is a somewhat blah offering. Although the taste approaches the medium range, and it demonstrates a bit of underlying sweetness, it is nevertheless a somewhat restrained flavor. So I give only a two star rating, although I do think burley lovers will be more appreciative than that.
I use numerous pipes when I smoke Symphony. As many reviewers note, burley often shines most brilliantly in a cob.

I have been totally surprised by this remarkable Burley blend! When I opened the tin, instead of getting acquainted with the typical MB Burley aroma, I was struck by an aroma that reminded me of another tobacco; it took me a while to figure it out: Dark Twist Roll Cake. I would suppose the addition of MB's Cavendish and some VA made the difference for the tin aroma. The cut is typical of most of MB's non coin mixtures: a partially rubbed - out flake, on the long side of cut. Despite being a bit dry, Symphony burns slowly and beautifully. It delivers a nice chocolate and nut taste; I find it is much tastier than what London Burley or Golden Extra bring; the occasionnal nice sweetness provided by the VA and CA make Symphony my favorite Burley blend with Wessex Burley Slices. Puffed at a decent cadence, it brings a very pleasant smoke and has enough nicotine to make me happy. I prefer Symphony to Golden Extra because of the addition of the CA. I have another 3 tins and I will be buying more. Edit: I bought another 5 tins. This is a Mac baren tobacco to try, it's simply great.

Smoking this while writing this review. Nice blend overall , but one of those blends that you keep around for the sake of. I often refer to MacBaren as the poor man's pipe tobacco. They offer great quality at at an affordable price. That being said Symphony reminds me of Carter Hall, Navy Mixture and Wessex Brown Virginia. Another reviewer mentioned finding a rythm with this blend, and that's the key to enjoying it. I would also recommend wiping out the shank chamber inbetween smokes with a q-tip. Moisture build up does not mix well with MB's spicy cavendish, which might be the culprit that gives the dreaded bite. Best way to describe Symphony: a malty ginger snap with a selztery overtone. Give the pipe a good scrubbing before smoking. Dark brown mixture that's reminscent of shredded wheat with similiar texture. Symphony will keep you guessing as the ginger and burley element rise and fall and dance with each other at times. Virginias add a mellow sweetness. Nice and toasty room note. UPDATE 12-23-14: I did notice a bite, more so when I smoked fresh out out of bulk bag it came in and rubbed out. When I jarred for a few days the flavor softened a bit. A pleasant smoke at any rate that requires the ocassional tamper. I wish MB would bring back Navy Mixture. This is the closest thing to it. Not to overdo a pun but this is more of a rhapsody than a symphony.

I like this tobacco. I like it so much I bought a pound and put it down to rest.
The mixed reviews seen here do not surprise me at all. As with all Mac Baren pipe tobacco this stuff can really sizzle your taster. A gentle approach of this blend fully rubbed out and smoked in the right pipe can be a real pleasure.
There is a flavor there but I do not get chocolate, I would call it just sweet. I like this blend because it does not taste like vanilla or cherry or honeydew like other aromatics, it just has a sweet tobacco taste. Kind of like the old school american OTC blends in a tuxedo. I really do like it.
If you smoke it fast you are wasting your time, and I am beginning to think that there is a way Mac Baren cures their tobaccos that does not agree with some people. Some cannot smoke any Mac Baren blends, others never have a problem.
Give it a shot, you never know. This one fits me quite nicely. Highly recommended.

The presentation is always nice and neat with Mac Baren. This a ready rubbed, so there are flake pieces, but packing is made easier with this cut. When smoking this blend I never rubbed it out. I just stuffed the tobacco into the pipes and kept checking my draw to get the right resistance.
The tin note was fruity when first opened, like many Virginia blend, but as this gets some oxygen, it turns toward a Burley smell, a little chocolaty and leathery.
This is best sipped, and it's a nice blend that has some zest and it develops into a chocolaty, raisiny, molasses flavor. There are some cereal and bread notes here and there as well. It has salty and sweet sensation ranges and pillowy body to it that continues to develop and increase in smoke density as the bowl progresses. At times it reminds me of the HH Burley flake--this kind of fusile, earthy, engine oil note that I love and find unique.
I smoked this in a variety of pipe shapes, lengths, bowl demensions, etc. It burns well and relatively cool. I think a bigger billiard was more enjoyable, but anything worked really. I found it did not bite, contrary to many opinions on Mac Baren's standard line of blends. I found the nicotine unnoticeable. It's a nice all-day blend, and mild, that doesn't require much thought, but given the time and attention it sure does charm me.
I would recommend this to Burley-lovers and Virginia smokers as well. Recommended, three stars.

Summary: a medium-strength Burley blend with a mild chocolate flavoring
With "Symphony," Mac Baren makes a blend that smokes like an OTC but tastes more like a European smoking mixture. Upon opening the tin, the scent of milk chocolate wafts upward. The first light squirts out a bit of this flavor, but it quickly melds with the naturally somewhat chocolatey Burley flavor, aided by the Mac Baren natural Cavendish in becoming a thick but soft smoke that is gentle on the mouth. Virginias hide in back, and are the weakest part of this blend, being sizzly with acid like PopRocks or Lemonheads, but they are a minor player and caramelize rather quickly, letting the Burley mixture take the lead. The malted flavor of white Burley and the richer, earthy dark Burley play together in this mix, producing a taste like roasted almond paste with a light chocolate-vanilla flavoring. Like the blends that may have inspired it -- "Prince Albert," "Sir Walter Raleigh," and "Edgeworth Ready-Rubbed" -- this blend lights easily and stays lit, delivers a medium level of nicotine, has a mild but distinctive flavor, and burns down almost completely to ash. You could smoke this all day and not only enjoy it, but probably never get bored, because within this simple chocolate flavor a tapestry of interlocking influences from Virginias and Burleys plays out like a rainstorm, with never quite the same pattern of drops but similar intensity from top to bottom of the bowl.

I enjoyed the first half of the 100 g tin of this that I purchased nearly six years ago; the other half is jarred for further investigation later. This is a good European aromatic assuming you are not looking for a topping drenched aro. I found the topping applied much to my liking, lightly.
I do not like chocolate toppings and this one does tread on that side, but it is light enough to make it bearable and even enjoyable to my palate. It really accentuates the burley and makes this more like a burley blend to me than an aromatic. It actually reminds me a little of Golden Extra in character.
One caution I would point out on this blend is that it will bite with the slightest elevation from a slow puffing cadence. You have been warned. To anyone who smokes a lot of Mac Baren products, this is nothing new to them, but I would put this one up with the touchiest of their "bitey" blends. If the cadence is right however, it is a great smoke IMO. Nice moderate sweetness that you would want in a Virginia/Burley blend with a touch of chocolate to elevate the Burley. It performs well and is packaged in the typically classy Mac Baren presentation.

I bought this the other day at the pipe store on a whim. I have smoked quite a few of the HH blends and apparently had forgotten about the infamous Mac Baren tongue bite, in fact I have a 21-year tin of Scottish Blend that after a few bowls I have to give it a rest but I am getting ahead of myself. I bought this in bulk out of the pipe store’s tobacco jar and it is a nice dark brown broken flake with a topping that says it is flavored with cocoa and chocolate. I couldn’t guess what it smelled like blindfolded so I will take their word for it. It is very slightly moist and holds a match really well. I was surprised at how few relights if any I needed while smoking this. It tastes smooth, maybe a little chocolate flavor can’t really say but tastes good. The problem is that I had to really sip on this one as to avoid the dreaded tongue bite and after a few bowls I decided to take a break as it started to nibble a little bit on my tongue. his one could really burn hot if pushed. Taking it slow I really liked but not sure if I have the discipline to make this a regular smoke but one, I am sure will return to. Definitely worth a try.

A broken flake of mid brown tobacco. It shares a tin note with Norwood, and both reminded me of Royal Yacht in that regard. Sweet, vanilla, perhaps honey, and a maltiness suggestive of biscuits.
Takes a light easily and smokes to the proverbial white ash without any drama. Tends towards the hot side, uncomplicated and a bit harsh. Straight out of the tin it will give off moisture, so drying is recommended.
This is one of the few tobaccos that will reliably give me niccups and I would rate this just a shade lower in nicotine than Royal Yacht. I consider Symphony to be a poor man's version of RY.

Mac B blends tend to frighten me. Not with strength, but the tongue bite. I should know better, but the description sounded glorious!
Pouch appearance of light to medium brown tobaccos, to specks of dark leaf. The broken flake/ready rubbed consistency needed some rubbing out before packing.
The pouch aroma of this 2oz sample to me, smelled like dark fired. Woody, slight chocolate, and smokiness come forth, with that signature Danish aroma.
The cocoa topping stay about 1/3 of the way down and disappears. Here, its all straight forward tobacco flavor with a slight sweetness. Each time I smoked this, I was extremely careful to just sip trying to avoid tongue bite. Relighting is where I really had to be cautious.
Quality blend from Mac Baren, a solid 3 stars
The initial lighting is a wonderful flavor. The cocoa, sweetness and woodsy/grassy are balanced very well together. This

==UPDATE BELOW AT BOTTOM===
Upon opening the humidor I was greeted by a earthy, grassy, slightly spicy and woody aroma. The tobacco seemed a bit dry and was a rubbed long ribbon which I rubbed out more and let sit for a half hour on a paper towel.
With the rubbed tobacco in long ribbons rubbed out into smaller pieces this was a pleasure to fill my bowl easily. This burned consistently at a medium rate to a nice dark gray ash and the smoke was medium and full with a wonderful roasted chocolate nut aroma.
Upon lighting the mild flavor of nuts, earth, wood, grassy, toasty flavor with a spiciness tickled my senses. It was obvious that this has a potential to bite and after the initial tongue tingle from lighting I sipped slowly and wondered where the chocolate flavor was. About 5 or 6 sips in the a mild chocolate arrived with a slight molasses background coming onboard and moving to the forefront as the other flavors danced closely in the background. The spices dances in the background also and from time to time cinnamon danced out for a solo to only rejoin the other spices after a couple of sips. From time to time Honey would make an appearance only to disappear again. The flavors left a slightly sweet slightly tangy aftertaste as the smoke progressed and it was enjoyable. At just before half way down the bowl the chocolate flavor changed into milk chocolate and it was very, very good. Then at a quarter of the bowl left it turned to cocoa for the rest of the way. There was no bitter flavor appearance or a decline of the flavors that sometimes happens in blends towards the end of the bowl.
The aftertaste of sweet and tangy stayed for around a half hour after finishing up this blend. This was a very, very pleasant smoke and I enjoyed it immensely. While pleasurable the tendency to want to bite would make this hard pressed to be an all day smoke. But, it sure could be a everyday smoke. The tobacco flavor was never overpowered by the different flavors although at times it came close. Will I buy more of this. Yes I will. It will be another of my special occasion blends. I would give this a 3.8 out of 4 stars with only its tendency to want to bite if one puffed a bit hard holding it off from a 4 star out of 4 star review.
=UPDATE= I jarred this for 6 weeks and smoked it in my Shalom Author and that bit of time brought on a rich mild chocolate flavor that really shone. That change alone made this a perfect smoke This is now in my regular rotation and gets a 4 out of 4 stars.

I think I might review this further, as I only have had six bowlfuls, and these are more initial impressions. I'm really falling for this blend. The color in the tine is a brown ruddy-red color. Thick to thin broken flakes, and it smells spicy and wine like. It almost reminded me of Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe, ever so slightly. It doesn't smell as sweet as it does sour. I found it to be the perfect moisture and it packed well. Took to a flame very easy as well. Initially, a butter toast like flavor is dominant, followed by nutty-cashew like-flavors. Some sweet honey flashes in every once in a while. I have yet to find the chocolate note in the blend. Maybe it is to subtle for me. The Virginias do make their little citrusy presence known sparringly. I found this blend to be very mellow, light but flavorful. I was also surprised at how long this stuff burned, it goes on for quite some time. Burns evenly and down to a white-grey ash. It definitely has the the qualities of a classic blend. All in all, I highly recommend.

My first try with Symphony ended in a wicked tongue bite. I haven't smoked a lot of Mac Baren blends, but I understand that these tobaccos can pack a big bite if you aren't careful. The first smoke pretty much turned me off to the blend.
But something brought me back for another taste, especially after reading reviews of this tobacco that suggest rubbing it out creates an entirely different experience and taste. So, I rubbed out a pinch, and man oh man, it's an entirely differently experience, indeed. The chance of bite decreased dramatically, and I could taste a symphony (ha) of subtle, dark, sweet flavors from the Burley, the bright sweets from the Cavendish, and the subtle yet complimenting Virginias. It's wild how something initially so bland and biting turned into a pleasurable tobacco by merely rubbing it out.
Warning: even after rubbing it out fully, take the blow slow. Find a rhythm, and hang in it. The tobacco can get way too hot very fast, and leave you with a burn. This blend requires patience. At first, it seems taxing, but the flavors are quite rewarding. I'll probably finish of this tin in the next two weeks.

This review is for a 7 oz tin of Symphony from the late 1970's that I just opened. My tin had a few little dents and dings, but fortunately Macbaren packaged these large tins with the tobacco in a plastic bag, so the contents were in fabulous shape with no drying or damage. Very dark brown broken flake makes this a beautiful tobacco. Tin note is very sweet, mostly a honey smell. After 30 years, the flavors of the toasty burley, the dark cavendish, and the sweet virginias truely do combine to make a symphony on your taste buds. The burley is at the forefront, but I like this blend a lot better then other burley dominants that I have tried, e.g. London Burley. Flavor is sweet as expected, but you taste more natural sweetness from the virginias aging so long, rather than any syrupy sweetness. Flavoring is mostly drowned out by the fabulously mellow combination of tobaccos. Hearty smoke and good ashing. It seems that most of the neutral reviews of this tobacco hinge on tongue bite. Well, nothing like 30 years to eliminate that! I found that tongue bite was minimal even when pushing my pipe hard. A truely fabulous treat and an excellent every day smoke.

It's been twenty years since I smoked MB Symphony and after severals bowls it reminded me how much I enjoyed this blend in years past. I know taste is a very personal thing, but I am somewhat surprised Symphony doesn't get higher marks here. I find it delightful. It has an excellent harmony, or if you will "symphony" between the Burley, Cavendish and Virginia leaf in this blend. To me it has a nice nutty sweet taste. Contrary to many of the reviews here, it did not bite and was not one dimensional. Nor did it heat up on me, although it important not to puff too hard. I smoked it in large bowl pipes. It was easy to light, and burned nicely to a grey white ash. In the tin it had a perfect moisture content. The broken flake was easy to pack. Symphony is back in my rotation and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy a Burley/Cavendish/Virginia. The price is right too.
March 2015 update I can't believe it's been 5 years since I reviewed this blend. I fired-up a bowl this past week, first time in awhile. Right out of the tin it does have a tendency to heat-up and have found it cooler if left to sit and dry a day before lighting. I would not change my review. This is a nice blend of Burley and Virginia leaf. Some are saying this blend has Black Cavendish in it. Not that I can see. It's a non-blackened Cavendish for sure.

This tobacco marriage is a best !!! What a perfect, gorgeous, delightful, stimulating, refreshing, and delicious blend. The texture, color, and appearance of these tobaccos is astonishing: love at first sight. I feel as if I am gazing at a delectable forest in the midst of autumn with all the pleasant red and orange tobacco staring at me. The smell is sweet, handsome, invigorating, and very warmly inviting. "I really want to get to smoking!" is what this tobacco does to me. This is o.c.d. tobacco, it may just get you all enveloped with it all. It is so good that you will rub the rest while smoking while continually sniffing and inhaling in ecstasy from the gorgeous tin. The taste is very pleasing, and interesting, or even intriguing. It builds up and gets better in an infinite number of ways, that is how supreme and complex this blend is! I am a single man safe to say that this tin makes a good wife ;) LOL! Lighting is easy, yet halfway down the bowl, as with most MacBaren blends, the tobacco suddenly whimpers down into mere smoke...(giggles), usually a symptom of fresh out of the can I guess; I will just easily solve this little pesk by setting the tin out for a bit so it may dry out in the room for the moisture to adjust itself, no biggie. I just remembered too that with most MacBaren blends, I get a significantly better smoke and a fuller better light with literally just dumping the tobacco in the bowl whether I rub it more or not and just pressing down just enough so there are not too big of a gap between the slices/flakes, because this premium tobacco likes space and mega airflow. Now that my tongue reminds me (way after the fact, showing you how great and delicious this stuff was for me to remember!) there was a general distinctive taste and smell of some kind of delicious sweet pancakes with maple/brown sugar, fruit and nut chocolate (think Raisin and Almond Cadbury's) and the slightest most pleasing sweetness of mild apricot preserves type flavor. Something like that! There is also a lot more more going on though too, too many great flavors to describe !?! This is a must try blend. Enjoy the Symphony !!!

Someone was nice enough to send me an lb of this delightful tobacco. I'm certainly grateful and if I can determine who this came from I will be happy to send them my thanks.
I found this tobacco to be very much what it Mac claims it to be. First light and a puff yields a very distinct Virginia aroma and flavor: Mild, grassy, and naturally semi-sweet. After a few puffs (and yes I tend to pull on the fast and heavy side) you begin to notice the burly which gets stronger as you move through the bowl. Cavendish peeks through after the first 3rd and dances in and out throughout the rest of the smoke. Symphony is a good name for this tobacco as it does yield a myriad of flavors at different times. As you smoke it .. you find yourself settling on a predominant flavor but then find that it waxes and wanes throughout the experience. My first thought at the beginning was "this is a VA ... not a Burly"; then, "ahh there is the burly"; followed by, "wow this is all burly .. with perhaps a bit of cavendish flavor"; and finally, "hmmm, the burly doesn't dominate after all". Terrific smoke!
What a treat to be surprised. I'll bet it would be even better if smoked with a bit less enthusiasm; also I'm betting a bit of aging would add to the delicacy. I'll be getting a few more lbs (guess I'll have to buy it this time) and adding to my cellar. Thanks again (whoever you are).
Well worth a try. Oh, and as for the nicotine, it does tend to develop more toward the last 3rd... even more than you might expect. Not sure why.

This blend is a good VA Cavnedish a lite casing flavor. Definetly not chocolate unless they hae changed it since I last picked up a tin. A good nicotine level for Macbaren. SYMPHONY CAN Smoke hot must puff slow easy to lite and stays lit. Becomes a little flat about half way then reappears stronger at the end of the bowl. An all day smoke. Redd's Tip: Scottish Ribbon by Connoisseur is the same as Symphony but less the filler burley and Scottish Ribbon is a much better blend.

I first smoked this blend around 1988-1989 when my local b&m owner opened a tin to smoke and offered it around the room. I haven't smoked it since until about a week ago. I bought a large collection in 2015 and there were three tins in it; two dated 2015 and one dated 2010. I opened the 2010 tin, shared it with a long time smoking buddy and he promptly wanted to buy it. We decided that it was both darker and spicier than what we remembered from the old days. This confirms the observation of reviewer Jimlnks 2013-04-07 that he, too, found it spicier and stronger as an aged sample. So, what do we have here in Mac Baren Symphony. I knew from the dark coloration and the tin odor we were dealing with a Burley-dominated mixture and it smoked as such. I enjoyed the Virginia/Burley proportioning, the strength level and the way it matured in the bottom half of the bowl. What I didn't like was the persistent tingling on the tongue that plagued the top half of each smoke. Symphony is a solid, but, not spectacular Burley/Virginia smoke that I recommend at three stars.

This is a favorite of mine. Broken flake cut that loads very easily. I Take a wad of it pinched on the sides and put that in the pipe. Break some up on top to make it easy to light. Bingo. The interplay of the three tobaccos is very balanced. I don't get any bite from it. Early on I did as I was loading it too loosely. Once loaded properly, it's a sweet satisfying smoke. Works better for me in smaller, medium pipes.
Update- I have gone back to loading all the Mac Baren classic blends very loosely in the bowl. Load the broken flake in and tap the bowl to settle it. Repeat until full with almost no downwards pressure. The smoke is more flavorful and nearly bite free for me. Tamp very lightly. The sweet chocolate, honey, hay and spice absolutely sing for me this way.

Delightful blend: round nutty flavor, faint hint of chocolate, and just enough of the MacBaren cavendish to be present without taking a nip at the tongue.
In the tin, this has a slight fermented aroma which comes across nicely in the smoke, particularly halfway through the bowl. In bulk, that fermented note is absent but it's still a fine smoke. In either tin or bulk form, it's a chunky broken flake that I find best to crumble before smoking. Generally a full brown color with just a little tan here and there.
This can smoke a bit warm, and the MacBaren spicy cavendish has a tendency to nip in every blend I've had it in. It is much less pronounced than in the roll cake style blends, so it's a little easier to live with Symphony than say Dark Twist. And like all the blends with this MacBaren style cavendish, the tingle is strongest on initial light then blends in after a few draws. But still, it requires a little discipline to not over-puff.
I can see how the burley base used here turns into dark fired Kentucky for MacBaren Old Dark Fired / Bold Kentucky, there's a familiarity - without all the punch of the dark fired varieties. Just an interesting observation I suppose.
All in all, a great blend that I enjoy almost daily.

much like Golden Extra, this is the quintessential MacBaren burly blend. It is what it is. And on occasion I quite enjoy a pipe full. There is not a lot to separate this from Golden Extra. I think I prefer GE because i love the room note but mostly this is much the same sort of smoke. Different flavors, but not THAT different to be honest. Must be smoked slowly or it can heat up. But its high quality as is always the case with the often maligned Macbaren product. Im glad they still produce this because as I say, its of very high quality. 2 and a half stars.

I just got through reviewing Golden Extra and I have to say, these blends are incredibly similar. If I had to choose....well....come to think of it, If I had to choose, I have no idea which I'd prefer.
The tin smells strong of fermented raisins. I don't know why, but this smell is not my cup of tea. I find it offputting, but always enjoy the blend smoked. Weird. Anyways, the flavor is pretty solid in the medium category with the nuttiness of the burley shining through. As the tin suggests, the nuttiness has a certain dark chocolate characteristic. Perhaps only noticeable when you see that the tin suggests it. Suddenly you think, By George! It DOES taste like chocolate! Not heavily or aromatic in the least, but naturally done.
This blend is definitely in the same family as Golden Extra, so if you liked that blend, you will enjoy this one, and vice-versa.
This is a solid blend. Again, nothing spectacular, but smokable, enjoyable, and repeatable.

I found this to be similar to Burley london, and Golden extra, but significantly sweeter. It goes ok in a cob, but seems a bit sweet for my liking. If you prefer softer blends, get into it,it's very cheap and not a bad smoke, just not for me.
Everyone complains about toungue bite from these MacB blends. I am 6 tins into their selections, and have not been bitten once. Must be a body chem thing. Take it all with a graain of salt and see what works for you.
I won't get more of this, I'm gonna stock up on its brother, London burley.

McB Symphony; I found this tobacco's taste too thin, and is very slow in its flavor development when smoked straight from the tin, I was ready to put this one down as another Mc dud. So as a last try before giving up I fully rubbed out a bowl, what a difference, it now had a nice rich flavor from light-up to ashes. And that ever present tongue irritation this stuff IMO is plagued with, now seemed less annoying. The tin says “ready rubbed” it should say “ready to be rubbed”. In the fully rubbed state I found no real tongue bite, plenty smoke, instant flavor development and naturally a faster burn, but not so fast as to cause any serious heat problems. Still not my first choice, but IMHO this simple change now made Symphony worth smoking. 2 1/2 stars

I was initially disappointed with this tobacco. It was my first tin and I felt I had made a bit of a mistake. It was too mild and burned really hot. It seemed like I always had to set the pipe down to let it cool.
After a long while, though, and going through other tobaccos, I kept coming back to the Symphony.
Now that I am through with the tin my feelings have changed. It's a nice blend, nothing fancy, and it requires care when smoking. But once you get the hang of it it's a nice, cheap, go-to smoke. I'm not going to be buying another tin anytime soon, but I'd smoke it if I had it.

I bought this tobacco with my first pipe from Barclay and Rex in NYC, along with a tin of Dunbar from Esoterica Tobacciana. The description underneath the tin said that this was the "aria" of aromatics. Upon opening the tin, I was very pleasantly surprised by the wonderful odor. It is nothing like what I'm used to as a cigarette and occasional cigar smoker. That being said, I didn't enjoy it at first. It seemed very strong and harsh. Later that day, I smoked some of the Dunbar and thought it was more mild and pleasant. My girlfriend agreed that the smoke from Dunbar smelled "smoother". However, I must say... it's been about 3 weeks since my purchase, and I've come to love this blend. You have to smoke it slowly and patiently, plain and simple, and it gives off the most delightful flavors and aromas. When I'm finished smoking it, I like to have a good wiff of the empty pipe bowl. It's really nice, and I now prefer it to Dunbar, so please give this one another try! It really deserves a better rating. I did notice it was pretty moist on the first opening, but I assume it's the same with all tobaccos and you can either dry it a little or fluff up the tin and let it sit for a bit. Eventually the tin dries out a little, and it's easier to smoke. I love this stuff and I will definitely be buying more Mac-Barren blends.

I bought this from my local tobacco shop this fall while shopping for some Dunhill blends they were out of at the time. I recognized this and had always wanted to try it. I now have finished the tin after several months of rotating it with other blends. Upon opening the tin I found it needed to be rubbed before smoking and this is fine with me. After rubbing it packs very nicely. It appears to have more than a little Virgina in it and has a nice aroma and flavor. I was worried about tongue bite as I have that problem with Danish blends however this smoked very well with great flavor. What can I say, its all gone and if I had more I would surley smoke it. Very good. Many more blends to try however this is one I would retrun to given the oppertunity.

I sipped it a bit slower than I usually do and with some even tamping it rewarded me with a pleasant aroma and a nice scottish blend taste. It has this nice middle to it, I can't really put a name on it as this is my 1st review and I am new to the pipe. I liked it, and have smoked it 4 or 5 times now and each time it is just as pleasant as the last. I picked up three oz. so I have plenty for now.

This is a very nice, chocolate and nut Burley, a touch of spice from the MacB Cavendish with a drop of honey sweetness from the Virginia in it.
These flavors ONLY came out when I tried this blend again in a pipe with a wide, deep bowl. I packed it loose and slightly more rubbed out than it comes from the tin (not too much though). That and gentle, slow sips produced great flavors. This is a fantastic blend!
My first tin of this I smoked in small-bowl pipes, probably packed too tight for the mix. To be honest, I really didn't like it much the first time, and it burned too hot. My first tin wasn't that tasty, until I got the hang of it like I mentioned above.
Edit/Update: Sept 15, 2016 I threw the remainder of that 2nd tin into a mason jar and basically forgot about it the last 6 years. WOW! Age did wonders to this tobacco. It's so mellow, creamy and smooth. I'm buying some more and cellaring it to have around later.

Smoking Mac Baren Symphony is a bit like coming upon a stray dog: treat it gently or you'll likely get bitten. This is actually the first 'baccy I tried during my recent foray from cigars into pipes, and I had to wonder (once I could no longer feel my tongue or taste anything at all) why anyone would subject themselves to this. One week and a few bowls later, I realized that you need to draw this one as if you're smoking a cigar: once every 45 seconds to a minute is plenty. Once you get the rhythm down, you're in for a complex, nutty treat. This one smells great, tastes great, and smokes great. The burn is even with no hot spots and, also like a good cigar, changes characteristics as you progress down into the bowl (which very much surprised me). It's not something I'll want everyday, but it will definitely go into my rotation.

The two stars are just my opinion-seems like a quality tobacco. But this one bit me worse than I have ever been bitten before. I have never tried a tobacco other than this one that I quite simply can not smoke, but the 7 ounce can, vintage early to mid 80s, now sits on a shelf in my garage, and there it will remain. I liked the slightly honeyed taste and the balance of Burley with Virginia to sweeten it up; that is, I would like it if I could smoke more than 3 puffs of it. To my tastes, it is a symphony which seems sweet at first, but becomes very harsh and dissonant.
Update 4-6-10: I got this into a mason jar about six weeks ago, but have not yet worked up the courage to try another bowl. One day, when I am feeling very brave, I will load up a small pipe, and, tube of Orajel at the ready, give it another whirl.
Update 8-26-12: Maybe the jar helped, but it's not biting so much now. Mainly burley, and my sample is from the 80s. 2 1/2 stars, then. Taste is not knocking me out, but not bad at all.
Update 12-6-12: I now think the entire problem is that what I first tried came from one of those 7 ounce cans, which I now suspect had some kind of additional humectants added that cause the bite problems. I recently tried this blend from a 3.5 ounce tin from the same time period, most likely early to mid 80s, and have smoked several bowls with no bite whatsoever! It's changed my whole opinion of Symphony, and though I still don't like it as much as aged MB roll cakes, I will be able to enjoy the four well-aged 3.5 ouncers I recently aquired. I'm bumping my rating up to three stars.
The stuff from the 7 ounce tin still sitting in a jar? I suppose it will just have to continue sitting there for a while...

I am smoking this as a change of pace since many years now, this is a balanced mixture of many tobaccos mixed at equal proportion where it is hard to taste or to recognize any of them, the balance is strict and well calculated, the flavor is particularly neutral and monochromatic (in the good sense) and the only remaining element in the flavor is a taste of "chocolate" with the Mac Baren honey flavoring.
This blend is particularly enjoyed by Mac Baren fans (and I am one of them) who are very familiar with the famous Mac honey casing.
I like to smoke this blend when I am in mood for nothing.

Unlocked if you can get into the MacBaren groove. A great all day smoke.
Burley well balanced with the slight edge of sweetness of the VA and cavendish as well as the typical MacBaren topping. It's just enough balance to make it interesting and not flat.
The whole trick is the Mac Baren groove. You need to pack this lighter, much like Golden Extra or Mixture. Do the initial char and let it cool as you lightly tamp to get an ash layer going. I char generally two or three times, letting the initial nuclear coals to subside. If you draw down while it's glowing fire, you will pay the price.
With this and the other broken flake blends like Golden Extra or Mixture, I find that rubbing it out to a finer level helps to keep the pack in the bowl even and relatively dense. If I leave it coarse I find it too hard to balance it.
Once you get the initial ash layer going, re-light and go, nice and easy, keep it smoldering and you will unlock the flavor in this blend. It's a great all day smoke, doesn't coat the palate, can be smoked right up against a meal and goes great with a cup of coffee.
Though it's somewhat sweet, it burns very cleanly and doesn't leave the bowl all clogged and tarred up.
This one and Burley Flake are on my top list of all day smokes that are pleasant, simple and don't completely clog the sinuses and flatten your palate.
It takes time to get used to MacBaren but once you unlock them, you start to understand why they are so popular.

This blend doesn't get the credit it deserves. Delicious mild Burley, sweet Virginia, Cavendish and a chocolate topping that is mild and brings out the tobacco. If you smoke this easy you'll get a cool, sweet, dry, mild smoke. The cocoa note enhances this blend and doesn't detract from the tobacco taste. A honey taste comes from the Virginia and Cavendish. It's not aa goopy aromatic, it more like the Dutch Cavendish blends offered back in the day, aka Troost...This can be an all day smoke and will bring back memories of your grandfather smoking his pipe.

Symphony reminds me of MacBaren’s Golden Extra, but a tad sweeter……This is an all day smoke with a good balance between Burley boldness and Virginia sweetness and the sweet Cavendish doesn’t overwhelm or “ghost” my pipe ( I guess cobs don’t have that issue and that’s why I use them) . As with other reviewers that give this high ratings, be careful to smoke slowly as this blend can get hot……Not a complex smoke, but an all day smoke doesn’t need to be……So far I haven’t had any MacBare flake that I didn’t like; there are a few that I like better, but I keep this one in my regular rotation.

This is a very nice blend. It tastes like burley (i.e., earthy/nuttiness/astringent) but with an extra twist, which it seems to be the result of some added Kentucky (smoky/sweet). The latter is very subtle, just a condiment to the burley. Perhaps this is the input of the Mac Baren Classic Cavendish. This blend is similar to Golden Extra, but a bit spicier. It is also similar to Mac Baren Navy Flake, but with a less noticeable casing/topping, and with less Virginia. The casing/topping might be the result of a mix of anis with brown sugar. I have perceived a similar smell in Mac baren´s Virginia Flake and Navy Flake. It does not burn particularly hot, but it can bite if pushed. The room note is nice. Recommended both for people that enjoy burley-based blends and for people that like the classic Mac Baren line. I´m glad I buy it, but I don´t think is as good ad Golden Extra or Navy Flake.

Smells good in the bag. Almost like old school plug chaw tobacco odor. Coarse mulch cut that isn't ready rubbed enough. Flavor is an oddity. It isn't bad, but it's like a conflicting event, which is clearly appropriate for something named Symphony. Overall, it is a very mild smoke to me. I can however, taste faint dark, smokey tones, and light fruity tones. Tones that really never meld at any pace. Imagine you had a pipe devoted to English or more English-esce blends for months, or years. Then one day, cleaned it, and decided to smoke a bowl of Carter Hall in it. A faint semi-English ghost into a very mild OTC. That is what Symphony tastes like to me, even though it is a Burley/Va blend only. Room note was "makes my nose itch". Overall, I give this a Mehh. A shrugging "It's Aaaight" as they say. I'll certainly smoke it, but it will last me my lifetime.

I was only interested in this kind of pipe tobacco in my early 20s when I started smoking a pipe, but I grew out of them soon. They usually smell quite good in the pouch, I shall give you that, but once you lit, I personally can't stomach them. The topping is the culprit. I find Danish type tobacco absolutely horrendous. If you are a newbie you should probably try it, but a seasoned pipe smoker is to avoid it.

That cacao...it is not an aromatic blend yet it has a very nice touch of cacao note. Ready rubbed, but I suggest to grind the broken flake virginias, it provided more complex taste for me. Plus, it burns hot due to virginias, I suppose. Burley inside is far away from being strong, I would rather say a "balancing" burley.

I was so excited to purchase a 16 oz bag of this blend though I had never tried it before. The tin (bag) note is a wonderful pure tobacco nose and no flavoring comes across in the smoking, an unflavored burley to be sure. I presume this tobacco will require some drying and I certainly hope this helps. My bag was an original 16 oz Mac Baren bag,, not a shop bag, so I suppose it was particularly fresh,,,,, and hence damp in the bag. This resulted in one of the hottest wettest smokes I have had in almost 30 years of pipe smoking.. Now the flavor was nice and a classic burley note,, a testament to how high the quality is since after the incredible hot wet experience, I didn't toss the entire bag. I have hope.. and a lot of drying to do,, and thence will add to and update the review. I sincerely hope it helps and expect it will. All overly damp tobaccos smoke hot and wet and seem to improve greatly with age and drying - a great tip to any newbies here,,, don't toss an unpleasant blend, try some drying and aging, sealed and unsealed containers,, occasionally you can work magic on a seemingly difficult blend.
Cheers,,, Glorfindel

I liked BLB as an occasional alternative to my normal burleys. This is not a substitute. Don't get me wrong, Symphony is good in its own right. It's a bit thin compared to BLB. It doesn't have the round, nutty body that one had. There is more sweetness here, but it demands your attention as it wants to burn hot and run sour if you don't take a relaxed pace with it. Not bad, but life is too short to waste on tobaccos that are only "not bad".

At Mac Baren, they know their Burleys! This is, with GL Pease Barbary Coast, one of the best Burley mixtures I have had the pleasure to enjoy. Being medium brown in colour with golden leaf, I believe it contains both Dark and White Burley. It displays aromas of nuts, chocolate and I can recognize MB's special Cavendish aroma which is honey sweet. The cut is partially Rubbed-Out flakes and the moisture level is on the low side. The tobacco is ready to smoke right away. A. Strength: Strength refers to the intensity of the nicotine. It's mild to medium. During the first third, it's closer to the Mild spectrum. Afterwards, it's really between Mild and Medium. B. Flavoring: There is most likely a sweet flavouring contributed by MB's special Cavendish. C. Taste: Burley releases subtle flavour ranges. It takes some time for the smoker to be able to discern what this leaf has to offer. It is never complex but when your sense of taste has developed some and you show patience, you will be rewarded with a moment that features mild flavour ranges of nuts and chocolate. Around mid-bowl, it also offers an earth quality that is almost cigar-like. With the addition of their Cavendish and some Virginia, I find Symphony to be more interesting than Golden Extra; as it also offers sweetness (which makes itself present throughout the bowl) that is most pleasant; and which does not bury the Burley flavours but, rather, enhance them. MB's Burleys are much more refined and elegant than C&D's, for example, which are too strong and often harsh. D. Room Note: It is on the soft side, not very discernable after 10 or 15 minutes of smoking. E. Rating: If you are seeking an elegant Burley tobacco, you must try Symphony. It is well balanced; is not too harsh like some and has no chemical aftertaste such as some of the OTC offerings. It burns very well to the bottom and leaves no moisture. True lovers of Burley will be in heaven. 3.75 stars.

This is an above average blend of Burley, Virginias and some Cavendish. The Burley is the star here, bringing on some nuttiness and some earthiness. Sweetness from the Virginia helps to balance everything out. I love the spice element that the blend possesses too.
Burns well, easy to prepare and leaves very lil moisture or dottle in the bowl. Pleasant room note.

This sounds like a nice blend but unfortunately the bite is to much to enjoy. I could not distinguish any of the flavors in this because the bite was so bad. Also had a bit of a chemical taste to it. I tried this and scottish mixture at the same time and it seems as though they are basically the same blends with the same tobaccos. They tasted exactly the same to me with the same bite and chemical taste. Do not think I will be buying any more Mac Baren products.

I have now smoked several Mac Baren offerings and will not review them any further since they are extremely not to my liking. If interested in my thoughts about their line of tobaccos then just see my review on Burley London, it pretty much sums up this vapid weed give or take a slight aromatic difference (vanilla, cherry etc...).

Tongue burn in a can. What flavor? Over the years I have smoked several tins of this stuff and it always comes up the same way ... pain. I purchased this in bulk about 5onths ago . At the time I had only ben piping about 5 months. It torched my tongue and I left it in a mason jar until I got up the nerve to try it again. I tried it in a peterson 307 that I had recently cleaned and sweetened.I got this nice flavor play when I first lit up and about 1/4 down the bowl this horrible chemical taste took over. I couldn't go on and dumped it. I blamed the alcohol that I used to clean it although I swabed the bowl and stem after the cleaning with 151 Rum and never had a problem before. So I packed a mer lined hilson. lit up same nice start and then halfway down tha bowl a terrible soap taste took over to the point that I dumped that bowl. I don't know maybe I got a bad batch or a contaminated mason jar but I won't be smoking it again unless someone gives me some maybe from a tin. It smells fine in the jar. I Don't have a clue but I don't like it

I tried this mixture over 40 years ago and I remembered it as being very bland but I tried it again recently and it wasn't as bad as I remembered. It tastes like straight burley to me and it's slightly sour as some burly mixtures tend to be. I couldn't detect the flavor of chocolate as some of the other reviewers have noted. It is similar to Plumcake except it doesn't have the rum and touch of Latakia so it is a bit one dimensional. It doesn't bite but it does smoke wet unless it is dried out a bit. I've upgraded my rating of it from one star to two.

There's a tin of this under the seat of my car. I keep it there always. I know it's there. Should I ever find myself away from home and having forgotten one of my preferred blends, Symphony is there under my seat. This 'reserve' Symphony never gets smoked because I never forget my preferred blends. Should some strange chain of events cause me to leave my rotationals (sic) at home, I still wouldn't smoke Symphony. It burns too damn hot and really doesn't carry a lot of flavor. This can be said for the majority of Mac Baren's blends, or at least every one I have tried. At half the price per gram compared to quality English and Balkans, you can be assured, you get what you pay for. The one thing I do enjoy about Mac Baren is that they still paint their tins- this being their only redeeming factor. These Mac Baren offerings never really develop. In fact, they never really offer a thing. I hate to be this negative about anything in pipe culture, considering our dwindling clout. I am always more than willing to band with anything pipe-wise in the name of carrying on our ancient tradition. As long it isn't Mac Baren.

I truly love the tin aroma, but it smokes hot. Reminds me of a Moravian bakery, baking spice cakes in a wood fired oven. Did I mention it smokes hot? Also, it had a similar aroma to Ogdens "Gold Block" but not nearly as flavorful or enjoyable because....... It smokes hot!

I only somewhat recommend this blend just for the sake of having a smoke, nothing special here. I will choose to buy Prince Albert in the future instead of this one. PA is more cost effective and works just as well. Symphony fills easily and lights easily. A SYMPHOHONIC revolution it is not. This one is TWO stars at best.

I purchased an aged tin (allegedly 10 yrs) at the Newark pipe show on 3/13/10. I have to say that while this baby bites a little, you can easily tame that beast by taking long and very slow sips to avoid the dreaded numb-tongue. This blend has character, a pleasant citrus flavor and a creamy feel to the smoke. I relit only once and it smoked nicely right down to the bottom of the bowl. I'm a new piper, enjoying the craft only about 6 weeks now and I'm having a ball experimenting with as many different tobaccos as I can get my hands on. Perhaps the aging helped to neuter this tin's bite. If so, and you've recently added Symphony to your collection, put it away and forget about it until you have grandkids. I think you'll be happy you did.

This is a review of a reasonably fresh tin. Upon opening, the aroma is of good burley with a light casing. I am a burley lover and this really appealed to me. The moisture level and cut were perfect for lighting. At this point, one might believe that the smoke is going to be great. It wasn't. The smoke begins with a Virginia taste that is not too unpleasant, but remains unremarkable throughout the bowl. The burley tobacco, of which Mac Baren is so proud, never really comes forward. The tobacco attempts to be all things and, therefore, becomes none. There is not enough Virginia to please the Virginia smokers and there is not enough burley to please smokers like me. The smoke is not bad, but for the price of tins now-a-days, a little more should be expected. The flavor does not change throughout the bowl. The ash is a bit clumpy, but acceptable. It only bites when pushed. The nicotine level is moderate, but not until you're almost finished with the bowl. This tobacco seems to smoke the same in many different size pipes. And, the aroma is not bad for a burley based smoke. In my opinion, the casing does little more than to heat up the smoke unnecessarily. The smoke might be improved if the casing were left off. In truth, some may appreciate the "balance," I did not.

After indulging in a fair amount of Scottish mixture, I decided to explore the other Mac Baren broken flakes to see what I was missing. Between Mixture, Symphony, Golden extra, and VA #1, mixture is (in my opinion) still vastly superior, however I do have to commend all of these blends for their smokability. They are all solid, relatively well behaved, mild, and affordable smokes.
Tastes like a solid, well cased, danish style burley blend. Smooth and light bodied. Very Woody and earthy with a little bit of hay and a peppery spice. There's a bit of honey up front, and the chocolate notes really come in late in the bowl. A little bit of sweetness but not nearly as much as Mixture or Extra. Overall pretty monotone and one note, mild, burley flavors. Takes a light easily, burns well without any drying, and bites a tad if inattentive. Low nicotine.
Overall while this blend performs well I just find it a little too bland. I feel like Golden Extra does many of the same things but with just a little more sweetness and slightly more complexity. Nevertheless it's still a pretty solid smoke and worth a try if your looking for an all-day smoke contender.

First impressions: My 1 oz bulk order came a bit on the dry side. Really struggling to get past the bite and enjoy the flavor. Smells great on the light and I get some sweet cocoa and nutty notes. Regrettably I also get a crazy amount of BITE and a weird spicy thing going on all along the edge of my tongue. Not having fun. I've smoked a good amount of OTC blends recently and they were much, much, much more well behaved (in this same pipe) then lady Symphony. I don't know if it's a mouth chemistry issue or what but ... Thumbs down.

The first time I had this blend was many years ago and I hated it. I then bought a tin that was 30 years old and thought I would do a comparison . The first tin I tried I hated because I got a lot of tongue bite. The 30 year old ton can still be pushed to bite but was definitely better. Will I ever order more of this - no. If you are able to get your hands on an old tin it might be worth a try.
