2 burleys and a touch of black cavendish. Slow and clean burning with a good room note.
Notes: Created by J.M. April 2007 - A carefully balanced blend creating a mild but full bodied flavor. A Kentucky burley ripened to the fullest flavor. This is a winner for our customers; no other burley like it!

The burleys have some earth, nuts, and light molasses. There is a vanilla black cavendish accent, and slight honey and cocoa notes that likely come from toppings. The toppings are light, and mildly tone down the burleys. No real complexity to speak of, and it's very light on nicotine. Won't bite or get harsh. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean. The very consistent flavor, after taste and room notes are very pleasing. A tasty and efficient all day smoke that's very easy on the nerves.

Excellent burley. Burns cool and sweet with a nutty finish. An all day smoke for certain. Nice tobacco to add to aromatics to stretch them a bit and in some cases dry them out to improve burning qualities. I would recommend this tobacco to new and seasoned smokers alike.

I found this to be an excellent burley blend. Gives you that nice burley touch of earthiness but is yet comforted by a subtle sweet tone from time to time. A great kick back and relax tobacco. The hint of flavoring doesn't distract you in any way. It's like it was meant to be a part of the tobacco itself. Nicely blended. Great nuance to make this a truly enjoyable smoke. If you're not sure about burley or your looking to check one out, I would definitely recommend making this a clear choice. Probably my favorite burley based tobacco thus far. Boswells does a great job on so many of their blends and this simply is just another gem.

Very nice mild burley with a hint of casing which adds a vanilla sweetness. I don't much like getting a nicotine buzz so this fits the bill nicely. Any nicotine presence comes toward the end of the pipe.
I find that this tobacco is too moist (perhaps from the addition of humectants?) which causes a flat steamy spot during the middle of the bowl. To remedy this I have dried it out and then added about 1/4 Uhle's Perfections Plug Burley, or Uhle's Blend 00. These Uhle burleys add some needed burley punch and mitigate the vanilla sweetness a bit. If smoked slowly, a nice nutty burley flavor emerges which is consistant to the bottom of the bowl. However, it has not stayed in my rotation

One of the best burley blends I have smoked. Nutty Burley with some sweet Cavendish. Has a touch of coco and honey flavor as well. Pouch more and taste match up well. Not a big nicotine blend but it is sufficient to my taste. Packs well and requires few if any re-lights. Flavor profile remains consistent throughout the smoke with no dull or harsh spots. All in all another exceptional blend from Boswell.

This is an aromatic, but it's done well. In the jar the smell of the topping was heavy. Almost like marshmallow. It made me worry a bit because I'm not a huge aromatic fan. 90% of the smokes flavor is the topping but it's nice. It has a flavored coffee taste, maybe hazelnut or French Vanilla that goes perfect with a nutty burley. Burns very nice and dry in my cob. Not bad at all.

Tin note is toasty Burley and sweet black Cavendish. I do not pick up any topping although the sweetness may be from a very subtle topping. Boswell does the best job in the business with casings and toppings IMHO. This is a very straight forward blend, not a pensive complex, rubic's cube blend. A good honest Burley that tastes of wood and earth. There is a hint of cocoa and the Cavendish rounds out the smoke, softens the Burley and provides some nice sweetness. This is not a flavor powerhouse so if that is what you are looking for this isn't it. Light on vitamin N and I found it to be great as a first smoke of the day with coffee (sweet with milk and sugar or a fancy flavored blend). Burns easy with few, if any relights.

This is one of my favorite aromatics, second only to Boswells Christmas Cookie. This tobacco is obviously blended primarily with Burley, with only a small bit of black Cavendish sprinkled in, less than 10%. The casing is light and is what I like to call a "brown sweet" flavor. Reminds me of mixture of molasses/maple/brown sugar. It compliments the natural flavor of the burley and does not overpower it. That's what makes a class A aromatic.

If you live within a days drive of Boswell's, make the trip. JM, Gail, Dan, and Julie showed me tremendous hospitality taking time to chat and answer my questions. Their selection of pipes, house and tinned blends, and accessories was one stop shopping for this pipester.
For anyone that likes Burley, this is a must try. First, this blend is quality leaf. This blend contains larger pieces that burn cooler and slower than any OTC Burley. I am consistently left with only fine ash to dump after a bowl that burns at an even pace.
Second, and most importantly, the cavendish and any flavoring component is deftly added. Just enough to add some smoothness and sweetness. Not too much to kill good burley tobacco flavor. A similar blend following this concept is PipesandCigars Butternut Burley - a good blend, but one where I find the flavoring drowns the Burley too much. Boswell Premium Burley is superior in this regard, and also that it remains biteless and doesn't goop or sour and stays in the flavor zone all the way down. Relights never harsh.
I give all tobaccos a little air time before smoking, this is no different. A previous reviewer said pouch aroma reminded him of a peppermint pattie. I get a similar nasal vibe of a chocolate covered candy. Smoke flavor is burley tobacco nuttiness with a cocoa or choc. milk essence on nasal exhale. Smoke feels full and dense in the mouth.
All in all, one of the best Burleys I have tried.

Opening my jar of 1 year 8 month old Boswell's Premium Burley revealed dull matt brown ribbons with a few black flecks scattered throughout. It felt silky to the touch and a bit dry like I like it. The smell of a sweet milk chocolate comes through initially and a deeper sniff brings a light nuttiness.
An unlit sip brought hardly anything to the palate, but every so often I thought I tasted a faint cocoa before the light. The charring light brought a bit of the nuttiness of the burley, and occasionally a light floral sweetness. Overall in small bowls, this blend reminded me of a certain famous chocolate syrup, in bigger bowls a borderline bitter dark chocolate taste came through. Either way it was a pretty good breakfast blend and was great with the bitter coffee I like. It was definitely slow and clean burning like the description on Boswell's website. The finish was very short leaving a slight sweet dark cocoa taste on the tongue. The room note was pretty pleasant and toasty, though I only smelled it when getting in my vehicle on a cold night after smoking in it on breaks and during lunch.
This was an okay blend, nothing to get real excited about from what I could tell. I liked that it didn't scorch my tongue at all, and that it didn't overly sweeten my palate like some Cavendish blends tend to do. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light, clean, and easy aromatic.

I am quite new to pipe smoking. I have only sampled eight blends-- all but one of them from Boswell's. I tried to get small samples of a range of varieties. Boswell's Premium Burley was my representative from the realm of Burley.
By the numbers: Taste:3.5/4 Burn: 3.5/4 Room Note: 4/4 Value: 3.5 Average: 3.625 = **
I certainly cannot call myself an aficionado of any blend or any blend style at this point. But, I can say what I like. And I really like Boswell's Premium Burley.
One of the challenges I have had as a new pipe smoker is a failure to detect much flavor other than just a generic tobacco taste. Initially I thought the same thing about this blend. But, once I cycled through my samples and came back to this one, something special happened. I genuinely enjoyed it as something unique from my other samples.
The bag note is very sweet. More than my other blend samples, this one carries the bag note of tobaccos that I used to sniff at the drug store-- back when they just left bags of cheap pipe tobacco out where kids can get a hold of them. This one, however, is more subtle.
The blend packs nicely and stays lit well.
Upon smoking, my untrained palette actually picks up on two things. First, there is a unique flavor and mouth-feel as compared to my non-Burley blends. For lack of a better word, I would say "nutty." There is also just a hint of sweetness on the lips and tongue. The dominant flavor is, of course, tobacco. But, there is something riding along side it that is something akin to a good hazelnut coffee. But, the novice (like me) might not pick up on it at first.
As for the room note, this blend lends a warm, sweet aroma that is what you classically think of as pipe smoke.
My third or fourth bowl of this blend was a special experience for me. It was the first time I smoked my pipe and just quietly enjoyed it without thinking about it. It was just good and comfortable. It was the first time I actually felt like a pipe smoker.
In short, this is a "happy" tobacco. It is content to be simply enjoyed for what it is-- a pleasant, slightly nutty, slightly sweet companion to whatever else you are doing. I highly recommend this one to the newbie.

this tobacco comes in a ribbon cut, inspecting the pouch we can see burley bright virginia and black cavendish, it packs and lights very easily. The taste is of nuts and chocolate in the burley kind of way, the cavendish adds a chemical sweetness that reminds me of cheap aromatic house blends. The nicotine is almost non existent on this one. I would recommend this to the smoker that thinks Prince Albert is too much, or to the aromatic smoker venturing in less aromatic blends, but to me it's just completely boring. It does seems to help form cake pretty fast, and you can puff this all day without having to worried about bite tongue.
would I buy this again... no, could you do worse... yes.

I ordered 6 blends from Boswell's. They are wonderful people and accommadating like no other shop.Again, this tastes like less sweet Norse Gold. I guess that is their signature taste like Peretti Burley or Wilke Toasted Cavendish. Do not expect Peretti 333 or Wilke Nut Brown Burley. This is more like an extremely high end Sir Walter Raleigh or Carter Hall. Reminds me the most of Edgeworth Burley in the pouch. I am sorry to say I have found all the 6 Boswell blends rather disappointing. Northwoods was the best of the lot and that was because of the imaginative nature of the blend.

Boswell's Premium Burley in the pouch has a mixture of brown burleys with some black Cavendish mixed in. The pouch aroma is a pleasant sweet smell that reflects its' nice room note. The cut is a chopped ribbon that packs and lights well with good burning characteristics.
BPB has a burley nuttiness with an overlying sweetness that is very pleasant to the taste buds. The taste stays pretty consistent most of the way down, with the sweetness perhaps fading just a bit in the bottom of the bowl.
Pricewise, BPB is reasonable for a high quality blend at $1.95/oz. J.M. uses very good leaf in his blends.
Scores for BPB: taste- 17 of 20; lighting and burn- 8 of 10; value- 8 of 10. 33 points equals a ** score for Boswell's Premium Burley. It is now a staple in my tobacco cabinet.
footnote; Boswell's Premium Burley is now up to $2.70/oz. Normally I would deduct a point for value but most premium tobaccos have also gone up during the same time period. It still remains one of my favorite burley blends.

This is one special leaf! I had long thought I did not care much for burleys at all. I was basing my prejudice on personal experience, having found little to like in burley-forward blends in the past. That I eventually came upon Boswell's interpretation proves yet again that one should keep an open palate and revisit old favorites and disappointments alike.
Boswell's Premium Burley is a beautiful leaf of comfortable cut and perfect moisture content in the 1oz bag that I had ordered (this review is thus based on the bulk version only). Filling the pipe is hardly a chore and the bowl takes the match on first light, forcing you to put down the pipe to allow for the usual charring ritual. From the first puffs, a pleasantly nutty sweetness develops, that remains throughout the bowl. It is a comforting mixture, for sure, but I would disagree with those who claim it lacks complexity. Every single pipeful of Boswell's Premium I have smoked to date has kept my interest till the last, to the point where reaching the (dry) heel catches me off guard. I have tried this in several of my Ferndowns with varying shapes and sizes and the results have been consistent and highly enjoyable.
My warmest recommendation for this quality leaf. Grab a book, fill a bowl, and simply enjoy the moment.

When purchasing a Boswell's pipe I chose this thinking it would be a great way to break in the new pipe.
There's a very slightly nutty scent with what is probably vanilla and maybe some anise. I know that PG is supposed to be tasteless, but it tastes like there's a lot in this tobacco. The smoke is very mild without much depth.
Positives of this tobacco are that it burns very evenly and doesn't bite. Negatives are that the flavoring/potential PG really ruins the burley experience for me. It had a very synthetic taste to it.
I was not a fan of this and don't think burley lovers (like myself) will enjoy this. I'll stick to Carter Hall for a mild yet sweet burley smoke.

When you buy a pipe from Boswell they give you a sample of tobacco for free. When I described to Dan what I liked and asked him to recommend something, this is what he gave me. GOOD CALL! Opening the bag I pick up a great sweetness and the chocolate others noted. The nuttiness comes through ever so slightly as does a coffee scent. The sweetness does not come through the pipe though. I wish it tasted a bit more sweet than it does- especially with such a great smell in the pouch. That said- I asked for something more natural tasting but still with a great room note- Dan really nailed this based on what I asked for!
I tend to lean towards aromatics but I like some natural flavors as well. The burley in here is so mild and smooth with no bite, no nasty flavor, no harsh relights. From that standpoint this gets a 4 of 4. The Cavendish adds a great hint of sweetness that's great in the room note but like I said isn't quite as strong in the taste. And while it comes through in the taste, I like a little more sweetness.
That said, this really is a great blend. It's probably deserving of a 4 star review honestly, but it's not quite getting it from me... I'd say 3.5 stars for sure. If you're an aromatic smoker looking to step away from the overly sweet and to something a little more natural, this is the right blend for you!

Strange as it may seem, this tobacco in the bag reminds me of a 'York Peppermint Pattie' with a very mild chocolate hint and the mildest of minty/musty aromas that combine to remind me of that particular confectionary treat.
In the bowl this stuff has no detectable flavoring, save for a mild nuttiness and sweetness derived from its constituent parts. Could be an all-day smoke. Nothing to write home about, good or bad.

This reminds me of Boswell's Majestic 586, but a bit lighter. Flavor is light, but I taste nuts and a hint of either vanilla or caramel - can't quite make it out. Nicotine effect is definitely noticeable. The smoke is quite light - so this would be easy to smoke all day. If you like burley blends definitely check it out. If you prefer something stronger or more flavored - maybe not so much.

I'm a huge fan of Burley tobaccos, so this is very pleasing. Nutty, slighty sweetend with the touch of cavendish. The only negative I detect with this is the over abundance of Licorice/annise flavouring that get's there before the tobacco does in some puffs. update: I mixed .5 lbs of this with .5 lbs.McClelland X-40. Not as sweet, but more powerful Burley with a great Nic hit.

I just love this tobacco! It is incredible :-) I have tried some other Boswell blends and enjoyed them all, but this one is one that I will get all the time. (I will say though that I really like the Northwoods too.) I am very thankful for the Boswells. They are great to do business with.

I enjoyed this blend very, VERY much. Don't know why, but this was a great "outdoors" smoke. Not too sweet, but not in the least bit bland. It had a touch of caramel that was very faint, but was there seemed to be a prevalent toastiness with each draw.
Had no problems with excessive moisture or goo in the heel of my pipe and it burned to a fine white ash. I'm used to smoking primarily aromatics (I'm a fairly new pipe smoker) and, while this is considered an aromatic, it was a nice break from the sweeter blends that I've tried.
I think this might have to be a keeper in my rotation. Another winner from JM Boswell!

I have only been smoking a pipe for about 10 months now, so excuse my lack of "pipe tobacco vocabulary" in describing this tobacco. I received this tobacco along with a pipe I purchased from Boswell's- in fact, my first briar pipe. I didn't smoke but a bowl or two when I first received this sample bag, but eight months later I have discovered what an enjoyable blend this is.
Being a cigar smoker for years I instinctively sought out stronger tobaccos such as those with latakia in them. The past month or so I have learned to slow down the smoking and enjoy some of the milder blends and even some aromatics. Looking into my tobacco "treasure drawer" I found this bag of Boswell Burley and decided to give it a shot since I was breaking in a new pipe. This has become a really enjoyable afternoon smoke for me.
I was actually surprised at how little moisture was lost while in its zip-lock baggie after 8 or 9 months. There is a subtle sweetness and nuttiness, but not overpowering. The room note not too strong either. For those looking for a good burley blend, give this one a try.

UPDATE 12/11/10 STILL A GOOD BLEND WITH A GOOD AMOUNT OF NICOTINE THIS DOSE GET BETTER WITH AGE SO LET IT SIT IN THE BAG IT COMES IN. AND BETTER ON RELIGHTS. PACKS EASY, EASY TO LIGHT. THERE IS A MILD NUTTY FLAVOR THAT WE BURLEY SMOKERS LOOK FOR WELL ITS IN THIS BLEND. THERE IS ALSO VERY VERY EVER SO SLIGHT VANILLA FLAVOR AS WELL. I NOW GO WITH THIS BLEND OVER GRNADMA KITCHEN FROM PIPES AND CIGARS. BOSWELL IS A MUCH BETTER BLEND AND A MUCH MUCH BETTER VALUE SHIPS QUICK Boswell's Premium Burley is the correct name. I ordered this and a few others that I would like to review but still aren't listed. At Any rate BPB is a very good all day smoke. With an aroma that is not to offensive to the non smoker. The flavoring is definitely there but dose not kill the burley taste. The flavoring as with all Boswell blends have a sweet and Carmel taste but very soft. I feel that this gives Boswell blends their own character. This flavoring can be found through out all his blends but a at different levels. All according to the type of blend. The cavendish gives this blend a very mild tone. The nicotine level is not very high at all. Which some burley smokers might find a turn off. The aroma is close to that of Captain Black but a bit more chocolate or Carmel fragrance. A truly goo blend. I smoke burleys and this I would consider a light burley. Not as smokey as Granger. I do recommend this blend for those getting away from aromatic blends and for those who wish to smoke something lighter then a Virginia or English Blend. For the Burley smoker this is definitely a must have. Look for my other reviews of burleys coming soon. Pipes And Cigars own house blends. As soon as I get them and some them I will post them

What a great tobacco... The tin note is earthy, but sweet and of caramel. The tobacco is very easy to light and takes no other lights to keep it going. The bowl starts out with velvety smooth somewhat creamy smoke with mild hints of chocolate and nuttiness. As the bowl progresses the cream texture continues and you get the true burly flavor. As for the Black Cavendish; the progression of the bowl does not amplify its flavors, but just adds a bit of sweetness that really compliments the two burley's. This blend was given to me in a box pass but I think that I will buy some soon. It makes a great morning pipe, low maintenance and mild.

JM Boswells 1st true burley blend and right up there with what I expect from him. Great flavor right from the start, smooth and even buning, lights easily. This is a blend that you can smoke in public that will get good comments . Has a nice nutty slightly chocolate flavor. This will be a regular in my rotation and at 1.85 an ouce its very afforable

This might be the first Boswell pipe tobacco I have tried. In short, I’d say this is light American “codger” burley meets a bit of vanilla black cavendish. It’s not a ribbon or chunky cut, I’d call it a rough cut. Burns cool and clean and easily without many relights. Fairly light in body for a burley (this is no C&D Burley Flake). No nicotine punch. Zero bite. It has a nutty earthy burley taste but I can also taste and smell the vanilla black cavendish. I am not much of a black cavendish fan, but I do like this tobacco because the vanilla flavoring is subtle - although make no mistake the light vanilla background flavor is there for the duration. I’d say this is a good light burley blend for an aromatic smoker, or for a burley smoker looking for a bit more sweetness than say, a more traditional burley like Sir Walter Raleigh, Prince Albert or Granger. Definitely worth a try.
Pipe Used: Cobs, Briars and Meerschaum
Age When Smoked: Fresh
Purchased From: Boswell
Similar Blends: Maybe Lane BLWB with added black cavendish.

I’ve ordered this twice now, because it is something I like to keep on hand as a blender (usually to help tame overly aggressive beasts). Both times I didn’t see visual evidence of much black Cavendish, so the sweetness derives mostly from the fully ripened Kentucky Burley itself. The tempering sauce probably had extra sugar and perhaps some butternut flavoring to emphasize the inherent character of this particular Burley. You realize these things if you compare against something minimally processed like Wessex Burley Slice. This is apparent especially when you set flame to the tobacco, when the extra sugars combust. But rest assured, once the lighting is over and you’ve settled into a nice relaxed cadence, this is perfectly smooth and without bite.
The honey and vanilla are very subtle here, I get more nutty tones. The nutty flavors show up as specifically cashew butter and hazelnut cream on my tasting wheel (a carry-over from the specialty coffee reviews I’ve done). As a solo player it’s pleasant enough, but a bit one-dimensional for me. A perfect codger smoke, I’d say. No question it is a smooth and relaxing smoke which leaves a pleasing ambient aroma (that would be the room note for those of you who smoke indoors). Seems to work its best magic in an old Medico Gothic, but I’ve never had an unpleasant smoke in any pipe. Just about time to order some more!

Try as I might, I just cannot get any kind of flavor from this blend. Friends really enjoy the aroma but I just won't order this again.
