I have been smoking Old Lodge for probably a year. It is a velvety blend that is smooth and smoky with a hint of plum (i.e., raisin). While seemingly contradictory, the flavour is rich yet rather subdued. This is another solid choice from Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe (PipesandCigars.com) in Albany, New York (USA). This is a very dark weed with chucks of Latakia flake and a medium percentage of Virginia to add some colour. Old Lodge stays a bit moist leading me to believe that there is something added that probably contributes to that plum nuance. Still, this is a good choice recommended for those who enjoy English/Balkan blends as I do.
A solid smoke as rich & full as it is simple. Ordered 2 lbs on a hunch. Got a very tasty cool burning all day everyday quality tabac @ a great price. No bite no gurgle no bitter or blandness, just a consistently good smoke. If you like a strong simple pipester friendly smoke this is a must have. Can't wait to see how mosquitoes tolerate it during the upcoming spring bluegill run! Great name by the way!
A delightful blend with a lovely, smoky package aroma, the blend contains significant quantities of latakia in a coarse mixture that offers a slow burning smoke that can sometimes get a trifle hot towards the bottom of the bowl. There is also a slight sweetness (plum-like)to the nose that rapidly diminishes as the mixture is smoked, but the latakia character is constant. The price is very competitive and it has become my preferred choice for a smoke throughout the day.
This is my go-to smoke. I'm pretty sure that it is McClelland 2030 and 2035 along with an additional smidge of this or that. It has a lovely combination of smokey-sweet, with the sweet being of a fermented BBQ sauce type, not the candy-fruit type. It is a wonderful combination that reminds by-standers of a summer grill. The ribbon cut works great with the broken flakes (2035); lighting is easy, but the flakes slow things down for a smoke slightly longer in duration than usual. Good smoke density and volume. If allowed to dry-out, the broken flakes become very stiff, making the pack a problem (sometimes even with a rub-out). But I can't complain. I can always count on Old Lodge to offer some level of satisfaction any time of day.
I must say that this is the best english blend I have tried. The pouch aroma is like that of a dying campfire. Nice and dry right from Habana. Heavy smokey scent of latakia with what appears to be cube cut burly. Packs well, lights well, and burns greats....all the way to the bottom. No gurgle with plenty of salt and pepper ash. My wife actually likes this one, outside of course. She says it reminds her of camp at Saranac Lake. The flavor is simple and deep with no bite. I smoke a lot of aromatics, but I must say that the only two non-aromatics to make it into my regular rotation is Ten to Midnight and Old Lodge. Pipework and Wilke know there aromatics...but Habana will have a stranglehold on the english market, that is if they dont already. Way to go and keep up the great products.
This stuff wasn't particularly bad or good -- a middle of the road mixture that very heavy on the latakia. The bag note (it's bulk) and flavor has the familiar aroma of "ketchup" I normally associate with McClellands. The burning characteristics are average. I enjoyed it, but not enough to buy more.
This is another very smoky blend from Habana. The tobacco is very dark roasted and coarse in texture. It has a very strong smoked aroma out of the package. It does require some rubbing out though, in order to keep it lit and minimize the tamping. Once lit, it burns very slow and cool and all the way to the bottom. Its loaded with latakia flavor all the way thru the pipe and the price is very nice as well. Probably not an all day smoke, but excellent for the fireside or campsite. A little too much latakia for my tastes.......I'll give it 3-stars.
