As much as I hate to review a blend that no longer exist this one compel to do so, great all around blend, one of The few Latakia blends that I've tried that does not tire my palate is a shame that warehouse burned down and all the Syrian Latakia went away with it. If you cand fine an old tin buy and appreciated for all it is.

I have just made a start on my last remaining tin of this splendid blend, and what a delight it is! This particular batch was tinned exactly five years ago, and those years have led it to attain a rewarding smooth and sweet taste. It is gentle on the tongue and seductive to the tastebuds, leading the mind to contemplation and a sense of satisfied well-being.
This is tobacco to relax with, to dream dreams by, and I deeply lament the fact that it is no longer available. Perhaps one day, when Craig's Syrian ship comes in...

So I have been sitting on this tin since July of "05" and figured it was time to give her a whirl. Shame this one is no longer available. Perfect moisture content. Nice cool black cavendish with just the right kick of Latakia and Perique.
This one burns nice from fill to knock out. Nice full sweetness of the Cavendish and a nice spicy smokey richness from the flavoring tobaccos. Black Dawg is good offering in this category. I usually don't purchase Cavendish blends. I think I purchased this one because of the Black Lab an the label.

This is a great blend. The perique is just right. I enjoy this blend immensely. The acidic tanginess on the tongue from the perique is just enough to kick up this mild balkan. One of my favorites.

i had a tin in my drawer for a few years now. Having recently found out that this blend is discontinued, I had to crack the tin open. The mixture seemed to be very black and dusty looking. Now this tin was not at all dried out. So, I packed up a bowl in my pipe and lit it up. I was expecting a heavy taste but there was actually very litte tast at all no bit a little aroam of Perique. This blend is very musky and smokey. Good with a single malt whiskey. And also good as noted for an all day smoke. It is enjoyble even though the taste is very slight. I would say that this is a good blend when you want to just blow out some smoke from you pipe. I can't say anything bad about this blend. Tryt if you can find it. Next time I will crack open a tin of there Yellar Dawg. which I have as well.

So many other reviewers have written about this accurately it?s hard to know what to add. So I?ll just hit the high points. Used to smoke this very regularly. Perhaps got burned out on it and ventured elsewhere. Have since come back to it -- my 4 or so tins have been aging since early 2003 -- and it?s as good as I remember. It?s a black and brown mix, short cut for easy -- almost cube-like loading. I had to re-wet my tin since it?s been sitting for so long. After a day of rewetting it was at a nice, dry consistency, ready for smoking. While others have cited the McClelland-ketchup smell (I remember it when the tin was fresh) so much aging has kicked it down so it?s almost undetectable. I?ll admit this tobacco is a little bit of a one-tricky pony: the taste you begin with is the one you end up with. This could be a problem if it wasn?t so satisfying. Overall, Dawg is a full mixture but it doesn?t fill up your mouth with voluminous smoke, nor does it burn hot. It smolders, coolly. If you draw hard on it to get more flavor you could risk a little tongue bite, but that hasn?t been a problem for me. In fact, it?s very forgiving. Taste-wise it?s one of those conglomerations of sweet and smoky. There?s Perique in it but it?s very subdued. The latakia and unsweetened cavendish are the main players. It?s very balanced and would be a wonderful outdoor or workshop tobacco: to be enjoyed while doing other things.

I really miss this blend. It was my all day smoke w/ my Big Ben Royal Silver 343, an easy pipe to carry in my mouth, could often find myself mindlessly puffing away while doing other things around the house. I would often fish for muskies in northern Wisconsin w/ this blend pleasantly occupying my time between bites.
The last of my stock now gone...

A friend of mine found the last remaining 8 oz tin at the recent Chicago Pipe Show, and thank goodness he did. Isn't the dog on the tin the same as the black Lab on Sam's Blend? This is a smoky, mellow cross between Sam's Blend and the sinfully rich Mississippi Mud of C & D. Yes, it does have a characteristically ketchupy, BBQ essence ala McClelland, which gives it immediate appeal. Tin note is a cordial, less spicy reminder of the magnificent British Woods. It's less kalaidoscopic than MM or BW, but more calming and introspective. This tin has been sitting awhile, and it has aged gracefully. The Syrian Latakia, now out of production, adds a noticeably different dimension when compared to the commonly found Cyprian. If you do chance upon a tin of this, pick it up fast and then jealously guard it for thieves of fine tobacco.
Four of five stars

I say this is recommended and not highly recommended for the folllowing reason: You will love it or hate it! I happen to love it! This is the first C&D blend that has a McClelland-like character to it. I am assuming this is because of the Syrian Latakia. The flavor is so unique. It can best be described as "Spiced Bitter Chocolate" . If you have ever tried Mexican hot choclate or Mole sauce the description will be clear. If you have not done this it would be hard to understand the concept. This is an all natural blend with no casing that provides a slight aromatic flavor to an otherwise English blend. It is similar to "Sam's Blend"- only better. Now out of production but worth a try if you can find it. 3 of 4 stars!

I'd wager lots of people will have mixed reactions to this blend, as it's loaded with unique character and falls into the "Love it Or" category. To me, it's like smoking mocha coffee. It's not cased, however, and the flavor is the natural combination of Syrian Latakia, Cavendish, and Perique in the blend. It's quite pungent (in a good way). It has a really odd sort of richness, and I tend to roll my tongue around my mouth a lot while smoking it, trying to pin down just what the flavor is. Imagine the luxurious smell of a can of mocha transported directly to your tongue. The stuff is very dark, with barely a hint of lighter leaf mixed in, and smokes well even in dry form though I normally add some moisture to my C&D blends - Craig is like the anti-McClelland, in that his tobaccos arrive as bone-dry as Frog Morton is gooey. This is not a multi-dimensional tobacco but that's just fine for me, since the direct and clear flavor is such a pleasure.

I tried this tobacco without knowing what was in it. I am very surprised to find out that it has Perique in it. I'm not a big fan of blends with Latakia in them but usually like them if they have Perique in them too. I usually like C & D blends too. Not the case with this one. To me it has a very strong Black Liquorice flavor to it and that kills it for me! This would be nice for the person that likes liquorice but if your like me and can't stand it don't try this one.

With this combination of leaf, and my love of this particular blender - I had assumed a home run.
Instead, it is just a trot to second base. My sample is a bit dried out (even for C+D), and I think after some moisture another smoke of this may change my mind - but I simply didn't feel an incredible kinship with this blend.
It is far from bad - in fact it is cool, smokey and just a bit sweet and spicy. All good qualities but also fairly bland at points. The end of the bowl does pick up a bit but still seems fairly quiet. Like a good dawg. I think this is the point of an all day smoke - but I'd rather smoke less and get a bit of an "experience". If you are looking for something that equates to an easy cavendish blend with extra thrown in (dare I say, a less confectionary Frog Morton and a more flavorful 965 sort of blend) - try this one out.

This just a straight-forward, middle-of-the-road, latakia blend with the syrian doing the driving and the cavendish providing a good base.It is at perfect moisture out of the tin, dark, packs easily, one re-light and enjoy. The Syrian in this blend was not the delicious smoky version that recently was destroyed, but still different than the Cyprian variety. The perique is definitely way in the background and reminds you it is there like a little child peeping through a doorway, which is okay by me. It builds a little strength down the bowl, leaves a grey mottled ash, no dottle, no toungue-bite, just not a bell ringer for this piper. This blend seems to be the base from which Missippi Mud started.

My tin is about one and a half years old. The tobacco is a dark brown and black somewhat chunky mixture. The moisture content was just slightly high. This tin had no plastic bag inside just a soft folded paper likea coffee filter. This is an unusual mixture. The Cavendish takes the place usually occupied by Virginia and/or Oriental tobaccos. It lit quickly for being slightly moist and burned well. The flavor is mostly the Syria Latakia and the Cavendish with subtle hints of the Perique. I did enjoy this tobacco blend but it really is like no other I have smoked. A good change of pace or perhaps for someone wanting an English/ Balkan without the Turkish. I give it three and one half stars.

This blend had struck an iterest in me from the first time that I read it's composition. I was a bit cautious about a blend of tobaccos that are usually used to add extreme depth to lighter tobaccos. I was surprised however to fing that black dawg isn't mean, nor does he bite. The flavors of the smoke are chocolate, figs, and the wonderful smokey essence lent by the Syrian latakia. I prefer syrian latakia when avialable, and it's presence was appreciated.

This is the first C&D blend I've smoked. I purched a nice calabash Ser Jacopo from my local tobacco shop and the owner tossed in an aged tin of this (from June 2000) out of his personal stock. My daily smoke is one I have made up locally of cavendish and Cyprian latikia bulks so the combination was not something new. However this was my first experience with Syrian Latikia and perique.
I was very pleased with this blend. The Syrian latikia was much lighter in taste and body than the Cyprian I am used to but it was very tasty. It blended well with the cavendish and the perique which came through the Latikia and cavendish very subtly after the first half of the bowl.
The flavor settled down the last half while remaining pleasently complex, mild, smooth and tasty. No tonge bite in this one at all. This is a simple and good all day smoke.

This was the first experience I have had with C&D. I have to say that is a very good one. I tend to like the Virginia and Perique blends so this is a little different for me but I love this blend! It is not overwhelmingly strong with Latakia, but you can still tell that it is there. This is a blend that could be smoked all day for sure. I finished my first tin of this and have had trouble finding it locally, so I ordered 4 more to let age just a while. Craig & Patty are great to deal with as well, they really take great care of you!!

Well, I struck out again with C&D. I've been trying Latakia blends latley that contain cavendish or added flavoring. After being a regular smoker of traditional English mixtures, usually sticking to Latakia/Viriginia blends, I discovered a few Latakia blends with Cavendish or added flavoring that I've enjoyed quite well. There is something in the two C&D Latakia blends I've tried (the other being Cross-Eyed-Cricket) that is of a medicinal quality. It is almost a background note of mothballs. I could not get beyond a few puffs of this blend before ejecting it from my pipe.

This blend has a unique flavor element that I can't quite describe, one that makes it interesting to smoke ... for the first 10 minutes. After that, the unique flavor becomes all that you can taste, in the same way that the ginger liqueur takes all of the attention in Two Friends Valle Cruces. If you fancy English blends, I would recommend that you give this a try, in a small amount, because this signature flavor might be exactly what you are looking for. For myself, however, this is too quirky for a long term relationship.

This is one of my favorite english blends. This is my night time sitting by the fire place smoking mixture. The Latakia gives it a nice kick and it has a hint of spicy cavendish undertone. I find this to be the ideal blend which gives me a rich full bodied taste without frying my tounge. This may not be the ideal blend for the new pipe smoker as it's stregnth could be a bit over whelming to the Novice.

this tobacco really took me by surprise the first time i lit up. there was an unpleasant creosote-like taste on the first few draws that nearly made me dump the bowl. the only thing that prevented it was the other good reviews i had read and the fact that it came from one of my favorite blenders, craig tarler. it got a little better later on, but seemed to burn hot. i put a humidor pouch button in the can and let it set for a couple of days. then i loaded it in my coolest smoking pipe(a striker). still got a touch of the creosote taste, but a big improvement after that. reminded me of a milder version of my favorite C&D tinned blend "bow-legged bear". flavor stayed consistent and burned down to a very nice fine gray ash in the bottom of the bowl with no wasted dottle. this is not a bad blend, but there are others that i like better, which is why i don't plan to keep any on hand. 2 stars, although a 2 1/2 might be more appropriate.

This is the first and only C&D blend I've had the pleasure to sample, but so far, the company is 1 for 1! Upon opening the box and finding the tin inside, I surveyed the thing. A nice black labrador dog on the front, so immediately, I began to think "aww, its a cute tobacco!" Curious, I crack open the tin and take a big whiff.... and nothing. No smell, No aroma.. Nothing. I look confused, and then notice that the tobacco is sealed inside a small vacuum bag! AH! This stuff wouldn't go bad anytime soon. Anyway, upon opening the baggie, I was treated to one of my favorite smells in the world; the tasty, leathery, earthen aroma of a high-latakia content tobacco. Packing was simple, its quite uniformly cut to what I call a "cavendish" cut, where all the tobacco is in small, quarter-inch peices. The bowl packed easily and since the peices are so small, much goodness fit into the bowl. With the charring light, I noticed something. It wasn't quite a normal latakia flavor, nor was it anything I'd noticed before. Something about the initial top-note of the latakia/mild cavendish/perique mixture really piqued my senses. Tamp, and final light. The first part of the bowl was dominated by that wonderful mixture of flavors I described above, but at the half-way point, something very odd happened; everything just sort of ran together. Not in a bad way, however, and maybe it was just my palate getting used to the flavor, but it definately got to be a smoother, more refined smoke in the middle to bottom of the bowl. As with most every latakia I've smoked, it was cool and dry when smoked in my large-bowled Nording freehand. Over the course of several bowls, no bite or unpleasantness at all. In fact, each bowl got more rich and tasty than the one before it. I can truly see how this would be an all-day english mixture!
Highly recommended to all latakia lovers, and to those that are moderately interested, give it a shot. I find it to be one of the best I've tried.
