On the rare occasion that I want to smoke a straight Burley, I think that Ulhe's “00” Burley is the very best that can be found in the States so when I heard about Bishop's Move, I had to give it a try. True to form Uhle's comes through again with a terrific and unique English blend. At first glance the tobacco appears in the pouch to be of the highest quality. The pouch smell is dominated by the Turkish tobacco offering up a pungent and slightly tangy scent. Bishop's move is balanced out by the Virginia's and Latakia with emphasis on the word balanced. The strength is medium, but the flavor is medium/full. The Turkish tobacco makes the blend taste a bit nutty. It is refreshing to have stumbled on a small B&M that is scratch making blends that rival some of the world's biggest and best blenders! Highly Recommended!

The very smoky, leathery, woody sweet Cyprian latakia competes and contrasts well with the floral, dry and slightly sour, buttery sweet, woody monopoly Turkish for attention. The nutty, earthy, molasses sweet burley plays a supporting role. The raisiny, spicy perique is a background player. The grassy, citrusy Virginia is no more than a condiment. I suspect a few pinches of unsweetened black cavendish is present as I get a little brown sugar one doesn’t associate with the other components, The taste level is a step and a half past medium. The nic-hit is just past the center of mild to medium. No chance of bite or harshness. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace with a deeply rich, mildly creamy flavor that does sport a smidgeon of inconsistency. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires slightly more than an average number of relights as it easily buns to ash. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste and stronger room note. Not an all day smoke, but it’s certainly repeatable.

Uhle's has always (in my 25-year association) advertised Bishop's Move as containing "Monopoly Turkish." I have no idea what Monopoly Turkish is...other than distinguished and delicious.

Anyone expecting a bump-free Balkan Interstate Highway ride will be disappointed. Bishop's Move has enough bumps to keep anyone awake and focused. You cannot put this blend on cruise control and forget about it: this is a REAL smoke.

As others have reported and Jack Uhle himself stated, Bishop's Move is not an "all-day-smoke." It might be...in some alternative universe of Zombies! Though this is an imimitable blend, its cousins, Blends 303, 232, and 71 are suited for regular puffing and Bishop's Move is best reserved for evenings and special occasions.

There are smoother and more refined Balkans to be had, but very few so engaging and flavorsome. This is an old blend, harkening back to an era when double-clutching and the throb of a well-tuned engine were part of driving a fine, high-powered car.

What Chicago writer Nelson Algren said of the Windy City could as well be said of Bishop's Move: "Like loving a woman with a broken nose. You might well find lovelier lovelies, but never a lovely so real."

This is a great smoke. Balkans are often described as subtle or nuanced. This is neither. It is also not an in-your-face latakia or perique flavor bomb. It is stout and a little edgy.

The flavor is a slighty tangy oriental forward with some smooth and sweet provided by the Virginia. There is a smoky latakia that does not overwhelm. The burley gives it some depth and provides a certain meaty, chewy quality to the smoke. The perique pokes its head out and provides some nose tickle, but it is not the main attraction. Roomnote has a certain incense-like thing going, and it is comfortable in its own way. I would not call the roomnote friendly in general, but my daughter likes it.

I highly recommend this blend to anyone who likes balkans. Like a stout beer, it might not be the best choice for someone new to the genre.

Wow, is this one ever loaded up! I tasted all of the components and in strong doses. I love most Uhle's blends and I am sure this one was invented with care... but not at all my cup of tea. So many different elements are in this one that they seemed to me to cancel each other out and the English style flavor was monochromatic and more smoky than anything else. And by the way, I call this kind of blend a twothbrush blend... you need to brush your teeth twice before the wife will let you hop in bed.

Bishops move is an amazing English blend. The blend itself is just a very well balanced blend. The Latakia is just enough smoke. The burley gives you a good nutty taste. The Perique adds just enough spice. All together leaves me with a zing in this blend I just can't put my nose on it. This really is a solid evening special occasion blend. I wouldn't call the strength on this full but medium. The taste is full and leaves you guessing on this blend. I really enjoy this blend and highly recommend to English and Balkan lovers. Great stuff

I started smoking a pipe fairly recently and I figured the best way to get experience was to purchase a bunch of fancy tobacco shop aromatic blends... They smelled so good I wanted to eat them all. I enjoyed them but couldn't find the "right" one. A side note here: If you are a new piper and you have previously smoked cigars, beware of the well intentioned blogger or tobacconist who recommends aromatics as the "smart and easy way" to pipe smoking. I will never understand this logic. You smoke cigars... a giant monstrosity of leaf layered upon leaf that you smoke for an hour plus...but the very idea of tobacco flavor in a hunk of briar may cause you to wilt and wash your tongue off with Brillo? Yes of course go from a Montecristo #2 or Padron Magnum to a nice Cherry, Vanilla Custard in a dainty sweet corn cob. Makes perfect sense. I read the Dunhill 965 was the be all end all of English blends, and snob that I am not, I figured jump right to that from PA Dutch yummy sweetie stuff. I took a sniff out of the can and thought, "whoa...this is a big change, may put hair on my feet!" Well I smoked half a tin of that and realized I was not an aromatics guy...I will smoke them but that is not where my heart is. Uhle's Bishop's Move was even stronger smelling with the Latakia right out in front. I am not good at describing the nuances and/or flavors like some of the poets I have read on this blog. But man!!! this stuff burned beautifully, I smoked a bowl out of one of my Sav's driving home from the shop in Milwaukee (I live in Chicago burbs) and it was like a meal. It got better as the drive went on. First class smoke and something that has depth and flavor! Good stuff. Update 12/17: I have smoked about a pound of Bishop's move since my last review (what a long strange trip it's been), and I have smoked quite a few English blends, from Strong Limey English to wilting American English's and everything in between since my first review here. I will say that compared to many I am still a novice piper, many years of cigars and call it 2 years with a pipe (and the first 6 months were light at best) but I found my initial review of this tobacco accurate, yet unrefined. Bishop's move is everything else you have read: Full flavored, Lat forward, a little "rough" around the edges. It is all of those things, but much more. The blend is what I would consider a Balkan (another "fun fact" Uhle's is notorious for inaccurate labeling on their blends, and the staff doesn't care too much to make it a priority to fix. I guess that is their luxury when the products are so good. As recently as November of 17 I have seen the same tobacco listed with 3 sets of ingredients on their website, in store and in their paper menu, so I do not really trust the listings and tend to use my eyes and nose.This doesn't list Turkish/Orientals in the description but on visual inspection and smoking, I am pretty sure they are there in a reasonable amount. The Latakia is the star but the Orientals and Burley make this a truly unique smoke and the Burley provides the edginess to the blend. There is a woody character that is also creamy and toasty and nutty. This is the interplay of Turk/Oriental and Burley. The sweet smokey Cyprian Latakia are strongly supported by the Virginia and Perique. The Perique is a light condiment but gives the blend additional spiciness and a dark fruit background. The Virginia's smooth out the smoke and give additional depth and sweetness. I very nice Balkan with some Burley. This is one to buy by the pound.

Hats off to Uhle's for making a very full English. Due to its Burly content I guess you could call this an American English.

Whatever you call it - Bishop's Move is a big meaty smoke that really checks all the boxes for me.

This full blend has the right amount of Latakia oomph - with a little spice of Perique, wonderful orientals, and body that comes from the Burly.

If you love a full complex English - put this on your short list. Highly Recommended!

Much like blend 71 which I adored Bishop's Move is Uhle's answer to those seeking a high quality bulk English. Where as 71 is a medium strength blend in flavor, fullness and power, Bishop's is further up down the line and more of an Evening smoke. It seems that other companies have had issues with quality and consistency when brands have changed hands, Uhle's having been around since before WWII have not and when you receive your package one can see and feel the quality that only a pipe shop that has been around forever can exude. (if they didn't their doors would have closed decades ago). Bishop's move is a blend so good that even our esteemed Deleted Account Bing Crosby would croon over - Boo Boo Boo dee dee... Try some while we can still mail order tobacco to our hearts desire. 4 stars!

Hopefully you come across this particular tobacco at the end of your English journey and not at the beginning. If the former, appreciation should abound in such a wonderfully-blended and full-flavored product. Should the latter be the case, you'll need to work your way through the plethora of English blends only to find your way back to Bishop's Move.

The flavor - and I mean that literally, you WILL taste this tobacco - is deep and nuanced by the condiment tobaccos. This tobacco will show you many faces each time you smoke it. I experienced no bite, but did feel the 'pepper' of the Perique.

Wonderful stuff! Working my way through the Uhle's house is thus far a real treat.

A medium to strong bodied English exposing layers of latakia, burley nuttiness and slight a liquor-like topping during the smoking session. This blend is velvety smooth and a delight to exhale through nose. Stays lit and burns to a grey ash. Nicotine is mild but flavor and body are meaty. I do not consider this to be a lat bomb. Its flavor points weave in and out all the way down the bowl without degradation. I did not detect any perique, so the percentage must not be very high. The virgina also seems to be in the distant background, or just overshadowed by the stronger flavors. A well balanced blend, it will beg you to refill your bowl. A real winner from this long established house.

This is a fantastic English blend with a soft, savory tang that is delicious from start to finish. Complex without being distracting or fussy. A real delight.

The Virginias here are soft and understated. The Syrian Latakia, lacking the more pine-woodsy scent of Cyprian, contributes to the savory-sweet richness of the blend. I can't detect a distinct Perique taste, but it must be there rounding things out with some bottom notes. The real star of the blend, however, is the "Monopoly Turkish." I have no idea what "Monopoly" means, but it must be what gives this blend its distinctly fragrant, oriental taste -- not grassy, not medicinal, not floral, as other orientals can be, just yummy and savory.

If you like English or Balkan blends, you'll love Bishop's Move.

A very nice and somewhat unique smoke. The Lat is very prominent, but doesn't dominate with it's smokey nature. The Oriental component is the star for me. Sour, woody butter is what I get from it. Very tasty. The Burley is just a hint of nutty earth in the background. The Perique gives just a touch of spice and fruit. Can't say that I taste the Virginias, but that's probably what's providing the small amount of sweetness. While rich in flavor I don't find it to be strong in body. Great for an occasional smoke.

Mild to medium in body. Can't detect any added flavoring. Medium to full in taste. Burns very well.

A beautifully balanced, highly flavorful blend that for most of the bowl smokes like a firm medium English. Bishop’s Move has a good amount of body and the flavor is a deft combination of sweet and smoky with gentle waves of spice coming through on the finish. The nuttiness of the burley and sweet woodsy quality of the Virginias come through with perfect clarity amidst the fragrant swell of latakia flavor, and the perique provides a delicate zest to the mix.

By mid-bowl the flavor strength ramps up and transitions to what I would categorize as rich, well-structured and medium-strong. The end bowl flavors are a real treat and I am impressed with the temperament of this mixture. Even at a faster, more aggressive cadence, the smoke remains cool and smooth and at no point does the it become sooty or bitter tasting.

I did not find Bishop's Move to be as strong as others have rated. The overall taste is medium to full but the flavor strength and nicotine level are quite approachable, which leads me to believe that even those who prefer a lighter English would enjoy this fine mixture as a change of pace.

Whoa! Deja Vu?

It's been close to 30 years since I smoked a particular house blend from a shop that has long since closed its doors. I remember a favored heavier English blend from them, a taste of which I've never discovered again - until now! Granted, tastes are somewhat hard to recall after that long, but this one tastes like that long-lost blend. I wonder if that shop bought the blend from Uhle's and renamed it? Entirely possible.

Since that time, I've found other latakia blends that I prefer to this, but this one is still very good. It's a dry smoking, robust and rich blend that is never short on flavor. It's smoky as is typical, sweet as is typical, but it has a very unique flavor nonetheless. I wish I could describe it in words that would make sense to others, but the best I can do is to describe it as "homey". It brings back wonderful, relaxing memories. I've honestly never found anything like this, aside from that early experience, even though I've smoked hundreds of latakia blends since then. Bishops Move is something unique. If you think latakia blends have no further mysteries to unlock, I highly recommend you try this one. It's a blend that I'll likely buy a half-pound of and smoke on special occasions. It'll probably be my new Christmas Eve mix! Not my favorite, but definitely worth a try to see if it could become yours.

I love TURKISH TOBACCO! This is an excellent example of fine blending. Very nutty with pronounced Latakia. The Perique is there but in the background. If you like Connisseur's Turkish Black this is an excellent alternative. Dry, rich, full, and very satisfying. A Balkan delight! 4 of 4 well deserved English Stars.

Uhle's is what this country needs more of. Local tobacconists who conjure up, with their own tobacco, interesting and enjoyable smoking experiences.

That is what you'll find in Uhle's Bishop's Move. This stuff gets you to thinking. It's not the kind of smoke you pack in the pipe and go out and mow the lawn with. This is for the end of the day, kick back and relax smoking (or go ahead and take a day off from work - you have my permission). This mixture packs nice, lights easy and smokes down to the end with the occasional tamping to keep things in place. Half way through the addictive nature of this smoke will kick in. It's one of those smokes you want to smoke till the end - which you hope never comes.

Bishop's Move is a complex smoke. A mix of tangy Virginia, rich Latakia and the famous Uhle's "Turkish Monopoly". The whole thing gets your head going..... For anyone who wants an interesting smoke, with lots of flavors going on you will want to try this. Highly recommended without reservations.

Whats a burley lover like myself doing smoking this stuff?! Well, enjoying it for starters.

Full, smooth, stout and satisfying, all at once, this is. It comes at just the right humidity and loads easily. At the first light I always have that "this is something special" thought run through my mind. The turkish and latakia are at the forefront and as you work your way down the bowl the virginia definitely comes out in a harmonious way. From the first puff to the last it's a great smoke, leaving a dry pipe and a very small amount of grey ash. I couldn't smoke this more than once a day but when I want to reach for something substantial, for those times when smoking a pipe is all I really want to do, this is a truly fine tobacco. Uhles quality once again stands out and I'd recommend this for anyone wanting to try a top notch balkan tobacco.

This is a pretty solid Balkan blend, but I really only found it so so to my tastes. It is definitely led by the monopoly Turkish, whatever that is. In the first third or so of the smoke, it bombarded my senses. The taste of this varietal borders on noxious without going full burnt rubber taste that I get from some blakans ala Dunhill Durbar. I think this is why so many reviewers claim that this could not be an all day smoke and I would agree.

It does settle some by about half bowl and then I start to pick up some of the other elements in the mixture, particularly the burley adding a nice nuttiness. Throughout the smoke it really puts off a pleasing side stream aroma which, to me, is essential to a great Balkan blend. This blend does have a bit of strength which is probably coming from the perique and the burley to some extent; however, I really don't get much of a perique taste to this.

The latakia is prevalent and probably contributes some to both the noxious taste I get at the beginning and the glorious sidestream aroma. Virginia is just along as a sweetener to the mix which is not very sweet, rather savory and bold. To my personal tastes, it is probably a two star blend, but with a four star side stream, so I am leaving it at three stars.

It's funny, but I probably tried about all of Uhle's blends in the $8 range, until that fateful day I went crazy and spent $10.50 on Bishop's Move. It was a good move to checkmate a pun.

Probably the first time I smoked Latakia in a blend and I found it interesting. It has this weird charcoal taste that makes me think of smoking through a charcoal water purifier, but it adds a neat effect to the smoke. This may seem insane, but I kind of feel like the briar pipe I used picked up a taste as if it were made of stone.

It is a dry, clean, almost flat smoke with little warmth in the smoke's bouquet. Worth exploring if you never moved beyond a traditional smoke.

Leather, spice and everything nice!!!

This is a great blend, that truely delivers all the way till the end. Upon first light, that burnt leather aroma is very upfront. And mellows out to this nice peaty, earthy spice.

Flavors stay pretty consistant through the bowl, which i liked! I didnt get any tounge bite, i did however get this gnarly burnt egg taste when i puffed too fast.

The spice is very different then your normal "spicy" pipe tobacco. This is a good, hearty, manly pepper corn type spice. Not a mellow cinnamon spice. The spice stayed with me till a little over half the bowl, then it just..........faded away.

I didnt get the N kick some talked about. Which is ok, because this seriously is an all day smoke for me since i forst got it in the mail. For some to say this isnt an all day smoke.....turn in your man card!

Room note (or, outside, in the vencinity of......note) was absolutely amazing. Seriously....smelt like a cigar shop on fire. In a good way of course.

This stuff is really good. Good enough for me to say, i think i found my favorite english blend. Time to stock up before this gets the hype and popularity sleepy hollow did.

P.S. this would go excellent with stone brewerys smoked porter.

Opening the bag I found the mixture fairly dry and spicy smelling. Upon smoking it was very good. An excellent balance of the ingredients, each making itself known (Latakia tying it together) yet in harmony with the others. The taste was full with a nice vanilla smoothness. Burned evenly all the way to the bottom and kept my interest throughout. The smoke had, confirmed by my wife, an almost incense like quality to it making the room note pretty good for an English blend and appropriate for a high churchman like me. The Bishop will be making his move to my regular rotation and I recommend he visit you soon too.

Soft and smoky, this tobacco is not your average tobacconist's house blend, but the house of Uhle has pulled it off again.

Nice, dry and immediately smokable this blend is always in my rotation when looking for a great english blend in a big pipe.

Mr. Uhle must live in a round house because this blend has no edges to get caught on and is seamless everytime. All the flavors are discernable yet it is as if each one was detailed and finished before they went into the hopper to mingle. For my taste the virginia seems the furthest distant with the turkish and lat more flavor forward. McCranies Murdoch's Pipe is somewhat similar but has the virginia forward and not as sweet to my taste, little as it may be. Bishop's Move is remarkably smooth with just a hint of sweetness. This could be an all day smoke if you had one bowl big enough to require training wheels. For my money it is best in class.

This is my first bowl of Bishop's Move, smoking in a Barontini pot while listening to competition Pipes and Drums (2009 World Championships). First impressions:

Very high quality. Subtle, complex and luxurious. Rich and smooth. So many hints and overtones that it is endlessly fascinating. An elegant, deeply satisfying smoke.

This is my first experience with a Uhle's tobacco, but I assure you it won't be the last.

This is my favorite blend. The "wee bit of Perique" adds a wonderful subtle character to the smoke, and the overall flavor is strong and complex. This is not a tobacco for a quick smoke, but one to be smoked slowly and truly enjoyed.

It starts off good and only gets better towards the bottom of the bowl. This is one I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good English blend.

A very nice english blend. It starts out fairly mild and a bit sweet, then the latakia makes it's move. The bottom two thirds of the bowl turn into a full flavored tastebud experience. Well balanced by that point. There are some creamy undertones to this blend that I can't pin down.

Can't get any better than Bishop's Move for a full english blend. Dry to the touch, and burns great! Very rich and satisfying! Great!

I would say you can't go wrong with this blend. Bishop's Move is the perfect name. I play Chess when I can and I always ponder the move of the Bishop far more than most. I've often felt the Bishop can make or brake a good game. This is certainly a blend to smoke for deep thought or strategy planning. But it equally good for forgetting the day, and just enjoying a flavor smoke.

In some ways this makes me think of the fourth of july, the flavors are compelling and complex. Every puff is a burst of flavorful sensation. The room note stimulates them Ol' Factory senses. If I could give this a 20 of 4 I would but a 4 of 4 is all I am allowed. It is said that this smoke is not an all day smoke, but perhaps a once a day smoke. I'm in agreement. Why, well this blend would poison the waters. It is so good that you may never wish to smoke anything else. I like to sample tobac's so I must be careful to not allow this nic rich tobac to much play time. A definite must try.

Yummmy is all I can say. Tastes like blend 232 but tangier with a bit of sweetness. Leaves the mouth craving a second bowl.

Laden with rich Turkish, this is a luxurious Balkan. At the start of the smoke the Turkish base seems to nearly overwhelm the other tobaccos. As it progresses, however, the latakia gradually makes more of an appearance and the Turkish recedes. I am not able to detect the small amount of perique so if you are a periqueophobe, never fear. Because of the preponderance of Turkish leaf this is the most nicotine-heavy of the Uhle's blends. While I can tolerate Dunhill 965 on an empty stomach with only a minimal awareness of nicotine, under the same circumstances the Bishops Move tends to give me a noticeable nicotine rush. Another cold-weather tobacco for me, and rather rich, so smoked on occasion. A good choice for the Thanksgiving post-prandial fugue state, lounging in front of the fire and watching your tobacco smoke being drawn up the chimney. This is quite a bit richer and stronger than Dunhill Aperitif, perhaps closer to Durbar, although, I think, still considerably more full. Again, an occasional smoke for me, although I will continue to keep on hand for when the mood strikes and nothing else will do.

Uhle's Bishop's Move presents as a ribbon of light, medium and dark brown. Tin note is the smokey sweet of a good American English, and suggests a hint of Cavendish (though none is listed by the blender). The charring light is smooth and smokey, and only vaguely sweet. This blend takes a light incredibly well and barely needs a true light: a tamp and a few sips and it's burning. There's no Oriental listed in the blender's description, but like most previous reviewers, I taste it from very beginning of the bowl.

Bishop's Move is woody and nutty, with a clear Latakia smokiness, and a touch of tang that runs a bit towards the sour, at least to my taste. The Perique adds just a hint of pepper. In the final third, the Latakia asserts (as is common in some English blends, with the smoke taking on a more leathery and murky flavor and texture.

There's a lot going on within this robust blend, and the experienced smoker could spend an enjoyable evening discerning and contemplating the competing flavors. And despite the rave reviews, that's what makes this just shy of a four-star blend for me: that competition of flavors. Those flavors don't seem to meld the way they do in the great English and Balkan blends. There is great flavor here, but I never quite found the harmony.

All that said, this could be a stout English smoker's nirvana blend. Dry-smoking and slow-burning. Certainly a high quality American English, and one worth trying. But to me, Bishop's Move is a symphony of many themes that never finds resolution.
