Nobody does Burley better than Uhle's. And this famous old shop also has some remarkably good blends that many people have not heard about or tried due to Uhle's "niche" market. Back in 2008 I discovered this hidden treasure and purchased what was, at the time, tins and bags of all of their blends. I hope these Uhle's reviews will open the door for you to some really good stuff!

Surprise, no Burley in this one! I thought this one reminded me in a way of Esoterica's Margate. Not quite as elegant and this one has Perique, but softly applied and the overall presentation was similar to what you would find with the old House of Windsor Barking Dog, but with more flavor and the Virginia not quit so beaten up with processing.

Wow. This stuff is great. I sampled a bowl from the tobacco bar at Uhles and I am glad I did. Great flavor from light to ash out. Complex. Smooth. Engaging. The Virginia's took center stage with the Perique and Latakia playing backup. Just a wonderfully enjoyable and beguiling smoke. Not what I expected, but high quality and I will be buying next time I visit. ----- . ------ So the description on Uhles site says Virginia, Perique, and Latakia... I don't know about the Turkish in this blend. But it is very smooth.

A very nice medium English blend. When you open the pouch it's dry but this is normal for this blend. I do find it a bit heavy on hot humid days. I am also able to taste the different types of tobacco that makes up the blend, a fact that I really like. On those cooler days in the summer or in the fall/winter it smokes like a champ. If you are ever in Wisconsin try and find some of this blend.

This is my first english blend with latakia so not knowing what latakia is supposed to taste like, all I can say is I like the taste as well as the afterbite. I can taste the turkish as well.

Uhle's 232 presents as ribbon of mostly medium brown ribbon, with some sprinkling of both light and dark. Jar note is deeply rather than overtly sweet, with a bit of tang, and that mild Latakia note that's both smokey and damp. The charring light screams "American English" (in all the right ways), and yet no burley is claimed in this blend. From the true light to the final sip, this blend reminds me very much of Wilke No.5, but without the flavored Cavendish, and with a bit more body. The Virginias are very smooth, the Latakia is smokey and condimental, and the Perique barely registers.

This is an excellent introduction to English blends and while not an evening easychair blend for me, could easily be an all-day smoke. There's little complexity to this blend - it's just damn good. Just enough flavor to satisfy but not overwhelm or intrigue. Slow and cool-burning, exceptionally dry-smoking, this, like all Uhle's blends, is a first class smoke.

Good full English tobacco. A good wet weather smoker. Not recommended for beginners wanting to try English tobaccos. Try Uhle 71 instead and work your way up to this one, then on to Bishops' Move.

This is a well-balanced English blend without any detectable additives or aromatics. You can taste the VA, the Turkish, and the latakia, with no one of them being present in too strong a proportion. To give you a basis for comparison I would say this is of about the same overall strength as Dunhill London Mixture. That is not to say that they taste the same or you would mistake one for the other, but I can say that I like them equally. The Dunhill is smoother in that the individual tobaccos seem to meld together a bit more, and that could be due to the fact that the Dunhill has some "tin aging" whereas the Uhle's is sold in bulk. Still, I don't find this to be a drawback: I just think the Uhle's tastes "brighter," which I sometimes prefer. The #232 is dry, as it should be, and so you will not need to air it out prior to smoking. It leaves virtually no moisture in the pipe. The latakia builds in strength as you progress but does not become overbearing. There is a slight sweetness from the VA, the richness of the Turkish, and the smokey latakia all present in perfect proportion. This has been a pretty regular smoke for me in the colder months when I tend to favor stronger tobaccos. If you like unadulterated medium English mixtures you will not be disappointed with this one.

For over 30 years, until they lost their lease and were unable to continue, I was a dedicated smoker of Grant's #2131. I'm only a nocturnal smoker, and I never had a desire to sample lots of different blends once I found one I loved. As a consequence, I was at a loss with the closure of Grant's. After trying a tobacconist who was known for cloning blends with modest success, my search took me to a reviewer who compared #2131 to Uhle's Bishop's Move. I went to Uhle's website and read about their various blends. After reading the ingredients, I decided to order a sample of #232, as it seemed closer to what I liked than Bishop's Move (no burley). I couldn't have been more satisfied. Besides the flavor and smell, which are quite close to what I had enjoyed, #232 comes dryer and smokes longer. It is outstanding throughout the entire bowlful. I smoke mostly Savinelli and Peterson pipes, and this blend works well with every one.
