UPDATE: I can't really fault much about this tobacco but I will say that when the new wore off it wasn't four stars. I guess aromatics just aren't my thing. All my previous remarks apply with regard to room note and smokablity but true to the breed. Vitamin N content was negligible and this tobacco (like most aromatics) was built around satisfying bystanders more than the smoker. That said, I'll probably pick up SV again some time but for sure it will probably never be a regular in my rotation.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: Early in my pipe life, aromatics were my go to genre of tobacco. I guess I've gotten more sturdy in my old age and now prefer English blends or Balkans. That said though, I think pipes are just like food. I love a good smokey grilled steak but if I all I ate was grilled steaks I'd be missing out on a lot of good stuff and probably wouldn't like smokey grilled steaks as much as I do. Sometimes I get a sweet tooth (with food and tobacco as well). Besides if I didn't want a variety of flavors or tastes I would be smoking cigarettes. So I decided to check out Sweet Vanilla. It's a great blend. Not at all goopy and is probably actually one of the top aromatic blends I have ever smoked (and I've smoked most of them at one time or another). Several things distinguish Sweet Vanilla from similar tobaccos. First, the vanilla flavor is not totally overwhelming. Many tobaccos of this kind (goopy or not) have a very soapy taste and seem more focused on producing a flavored room scent than any tobacco taste to the smoker. Not so with Sweet Vanilla. The vanilla is subtle, the room note is fantastic and it actually has a mild sweet, tobacco taste to it instead of feeling like you're smoking air freshner. I was actually amazed at the depth of this blend (above and beyond the fact that it smells great). It also tastes great. I was actually are very satisfied with its body and full flavor. Never have I seen an aromatic pull this off in such fine style. The room note is amazing but it's also a very smooth and satisfying smoke. I would recommend it for anyone really, from the begining pipe smoker to someone like me who occassionally needs a break from stouter blends.

I ordered and tried a sample of Sweet Vanilla after reviewing the other reviews listed here. My initial impression was so good I followed up with a large order. After several bowls I have discovered two things; if you smoke this at a moderate pace toward the bottom of the bowl the taste becomes fowl; if you smoke this blend extremely slow it is as the others describe and only then is it enjoyable. Besed on my experience this rally should be rated three stars.

I was in the Tampa store searching for a blend that had that satisfying aromatic room note, but one which also yielded up a mild flavor, ie, still allowing some of the room note flavor to come through without overpowering. The sweet vanilla was suggested, with the tobacconist cautioning that the 'sweet' was merely part of the descriptive name, not to be confused with suggesting yet another goopy aromatic. From the first bowl, that vanilla scent eminating elicited comments, all positive. And the taste was delicious, the nutty flavors came through nicely with a satisfying dose of the vanilla casing, and every so often a rich burst of it came to the tongue as a creamy accent to the nut-like blend. I went through one pouch quickly and returned to the store to compliment them on one fine blend, catching Manny Busciglio tending the tobacco bar that day. His comments were that the Sweet Vanilla blend was formulated precisely to give that vanilla the staying power to last the entire bowl, without being 'overdone'. I contend Manny hit the mark with his blend, and Sweet Vanilla has been a top seller since its inception in August 2003. It's my 'go-to' tobacco when I really want a flavorful smoke that is cool, dry, and with no bite...and a lingering aftertaste that tempts another bowlful. As far as 'wife-rating', mine tells me it's her favorite, and it was validated one evening while having a bowl outside a trendy Tampa restaurant. A female patron walked from the restaurant and passed by, got about 10 paces away and then turned and remarked, "wow, that tobacco smells heavenly...really nice". My suggestion: order it up and enjoy!
