Va / perique blends have, over the years, been my overall favorite tobacco. Something about that tart, acrid and "figiness" smell that just drives me crazy. My 2 most favorites are Escudo Navy and Bayou Morning Flake, with the later taking second. I will generally warehouse all my Va/ perique blends for at least 14 months before opening. I recently opened a tin of Bayou Morning that was 2 years old (lost, but then found)and to say it was fantastic would be an under statement. I also let the tin sit open for a day or two to dry it out somewhat. No doubt about it Cornell & Diehl have a winner with this one. This tobacco pairs well with an aged Merlot (181 or Robert Mondavi Private Selection or Reserve)or a cup of black, slightly cooled, Columbian Supremo.

Cornell & Diehl - Bayou Morning Flake.

This is another blend I received in a recent trade with Gentleman Zombie; it's absolutely fabulous!

As a few other folks have said, the tin-note is sublime; it just beseeches you to fill and light! The flakes aren't too broken, and are at the smaller end of the scale where length and width are concerned, however they lean more towards the larger end regarding the thickness. I'm not sure whether the moisture content may vary from tin to tin, but mines very good.

Once it's been crumbled, loaded, and lit, I'm blown away; it's EXACTLY what I want from a pipe tobacco: I wouldn't recommend it to those who aren't keen on Perique though; it has a very clear taste of it, but the dark fruitiness outweighs the sharpness; it's not as formidable as I often find many VaPer's can be. The Virginia offers some flavour: mild hay, and a little wood, but it isn't in the same league where the strength of flavour is concerned. As a few other's have said, it can pack a hefty punch of nicotine, but to tell the truth, unless the smoke's deliberately inhaled in big puffs, I don't find it to be anymore than strong. To finish, everything else about Bayou is impeccable: a great burn, lovely note, and no tongue-bite.

I recently purchased an 8-blend sampler pack directly from C&D and since I told Chris I was a huge fan of Bayou Morning, he threw in a sample of this. I've finished it and enjoyed it but thought that it bore only a slight resemblance to BM, and I see my tastebuds are confirmed with the tin description above.

Perique is so difficult to work with, and it requires a deft hand to produce results that are close to perfection for my taste. Bayou Morning does that, BMF doesn't quite get there. This is still an enjoyable smoke, but the perique was applied a bit too liberally and it's slightly overwhelming. This reminded me of Solani Silver Flake on steroids - good tasting but a bit much for me to take. I still recommend this for those smokers with a stouter constitution than I possess. BMF produces a mouth-filling smoke and the flavor was enjoyable. I finished the sample with no complaints or ill effects but I believe I'll stick with regular Bayou Morning, a blend I consider one of the 4 or 5 best VaPers on the market. I'd recommend you start there and go to this one next.

Mr. Runowski produced a fine combination here with a twist to the original. This one is a true Va/Per blend that carries some strength and peppery semi-sweet taste sensations as the smoke progresses. Not a great deal of flavor variation, but this combination works well and I imagine those who enjoy Va/Per blends with some backbone will enjoy this one. And, the flake form burns much more slowly and a little cooler than the original. Both are good blends.

A good straight Va/Per blend. My main observation was its strength. I don't smoke cigarettes so maybe I'm less tolerant to nicotene than most, but this stuff seemed to really pack a whollop. It did light easily and burn well after being dried a bit, and had a good taste, if not a little heavy on the perique IMO.

Then, about 3/4 of the way through the bowl it hit me. I mean it litterally reached its muscular arm out out the bowl and punched me right in the head. Hard. I dropped(read: gently set down) my pipe and slowly crawled back into the house, whimpering and leaving a trail of tears behind me. I curled up on my couch in the fetal position, cursing all thing tobacco and sobbing like a little girl until the pounding in my nugget stopped.

POST-RECOVERY: I now smoke this blend much slower and in smaller doses, and do still enjoy it. Although I now wear a helmet in case it tries to attack me again. If you like strong blends with a little extra Perique try this stuff. You'll love it.

I was expecting something similar to BM here and was pleasantly surprised to find something completely different. No point trying to compare the two. This is a fine flake and a bit of a powerhouse. This is for Perique lovers. The Virginia just gives a little support and roundness. Here you get the full flavor of Perique along with a nice dose of spice and...yeah...a boatload of nicotine. It's also very smooth with no harshness or sharpness. Very easy on the retrohale. Very satisfying.

Medium to strong in body. No added flavorings. Medium in taste. Burns very well after some drying time.

Holy buckets! This stuff is fantastic... the first American va/per I've tried that gives the Europeans a serious run for their money.. the tin aroma first of all- wow! In your face dried fruit... intense flavorful kick in the face. It smokes just as well... beautiful cool flavorful. Lots of perique... yet somehow the Virginias are able to stand up and hold things together. I have got to get my hands on more of this.. it's proved itself in a way I never expected. It is bold but don t be fooled... you can find nuance.

Opening the tin reveals a very familiar, fruity, fermented, figgy aroma that is characteristic of Perique-heavy C&D blends. I love this smell. I also noted some chocolate and acetic notes at times. No indication of a top dressing, just complex, delicious Virginia and Perique.

Smoking this blend is a real treat if you love VA/Per blends. The bowl shows a nice progression from fruity and sweet on light down to deep and savory aromas at the end.

I found this blend to have more nicotine than expected, perhaps due to the high Perique content.

I bought this blend over six years ago, and just tried it for the first time. Now I wish I had bought more, because I would love to see how it further develops with more age.

TOP-NOTCH-VA/PER! This is like a holy grail in terms of Va/Pers to my personal preference! Not most complex, but just very refined taste that flatters my palate like no other Virginia/Perique blend.

We were ordering in the US with friends and by accident they bought me the Bayou Flake, instead of the Ribbon-Cut - and thank god for that! From the lovely tin art, that makes me wallow in fantasies about a man rowing down a Bayou on his boat, thinking of home, the lovely scent of frehsly baked bread, the sparkling eyes of his children and a relieved wife that's happy to have her man back at home. Keeping the pipe in the corner of his mouth, while the few shafts of sun tickle his tired eyes.

The tin note is wonderful and appetising. Fruit bread, stoved, dark fruits and lots of pepper. Very distinctive aroma. Perfectly manufactured flakes, mostly broken, but some are still in tact are waiting inside, that are a joy to handle and break apart quite easily. Still they can be folded to little "balls" and stuffed in the pipe like that, which I prefer.

In the smoke you instantly get lots of pepper and spice. The tin-note pretty much transposes one-to-one into the smoke aroma. Dark bread, stoved and dark fruits create a distinctive aroma, that is unlike any Va/Per I had before. Rather "dark" in flavours, this isn't grassy to me at all. Fruity, bready, peppery, spicy. The 25% of Perique result in a good nicotine punch, that gets you going in the morning. Only little sweetness to it, yet noticeable. I like that, most Va/Pers are sugary-sweet. I don't consider this an All-Day smoke due to the rather high strenght, but for some it may be!

I absolutely love this blend, too bad it ain't available in bulk, because ordering tins from the US to Germany isn't quite convenient tbqh. But it's totally worth the effort and cash! This is some very unique Va/Per blend with its very own merits and aroma. If you like Va/Pers with decent strenght and dark-toned arom - try it, it's heavenly!

This soft and broken flake is very handy to stuff the pipe, providing a slow, cool burn. I used to smoke the “regular” Bayou Morning, the Ribbon Cut, and I find them very different, although they have the same name, which normally implies being the same mixture. Check my other review of the BM Ribbon Cut and compare it with this one.

BM Flake is deep, dark, matured, harmonious, without any peaks and edges. Excellent choice of Virginias and they are the star of the show here. There is a healthy dose of Perique, but it has been gagged in a sense, as there are almost no typical Perique flavours around. Perique is there to enhance the Virginias, donating some power and strength to this mixture, what I appreciate a lot. Soft, pleasant nose-tingle on retro-hale. No tongue-burn at all. I cannot tell which one I prefer, the BM Ribbon Cut, or the BM Flake, They are very different to me, both very tasty four star blends. Get a tin of each and find out for yourself which one YOU prefer.

I opened a 9 year old tin of this flake . The brick of tobacco was wrapped in paper which felt moist and had turned brown . The tobacco itself was moist also and not easy to pack . The tin note was amazing , strong and delicate at the same time . Packing and lighting was a little difficult , a loose pack is best with this flake . I was bowled over by the taste , deep prunes and smoldering , fragrant wood . This is what I smoke perique for . After savoring the can I bought a bunch of new tins but I have no idea how they taste without aging . If you can buy this as a vintage tobacco with a little age on it do it .

BMF is a broken flake of flue cured Virginas with a decent measure of perique. The tin note is of stewed fruit with the tangy perique scent added in. Tin mosture is slightly wetter than I'm have experiened with C&D tins but only needs a little drying. The flake breaks easily and runs out to taste. The burn quality is good, only requiring a few relights and burns down to a dry ash. Overall good VaPer flavor, with somewhat of a toast-like taste to the Virginias. Vitamin N is present. Pleasant VaPer room note. BMF is a quality offering worthy of consideration. The tin reviewed is from 5/11/10.

I wasn't prepared for the amount of nicotine. About halfway through the bowl it hit me hard and I was feeling sick. Next time I will smoke this much slower :) Overall I thought it had a smooth spiciness to it that was quite pleasant although the perique was somewhat overpowering. It's a rather one dimensional smoke in my opinion. If you're a beginner or accustomed to smoking latakia's and Virginias then go easy with this one the nicotine will catch you off guard.

Ever since I crossed paths with Voodoo Queen, I have been a Perique freak!

This tobacco is actually quite eye pleasing. Nice shades of brown and red.

The bag aroma was very much like Voodoo Queen minus the Latkia and mocha flavoring.

The texture is amazing, supple flakes that crumble nice and easy, pack well, light excitedly all while delivering the anticipated reaction!

WHOOOA MOMMA! This is a spicy one! I smiled nice and broadly as I puffed away in bliss. Although its initial spice calms down after a bit, the VA gives its tasty elements over and then plays musical chairs with the Perique.

It's a tilt-a-whirl for your mouth!

To me, Perique is to pipes as Habano Ligero is to cigars. Perfect!

I have found myself another one. Great flavor, great taste, the nicotine is probably pretty strong, but I can't tell. I'm too conditioned to it. I didn't feel sick though, so it's not enough, but I will settle.

American style pop-top tin with a plastic lid with a nice little evocative water color illustration. Messy presentation of beautiful thick broken flake inside. The flakes are somewhat loose and I don't give them much besides a quick break to size to pack. The aroma is nice, some spicy molasses, wood, light smoke, leather, tobacco, stewed fruits, and apple cider vinegar. This blend favors a loose pack and occasion light tamping to squeeze out a little air.

I find this difficult to review and have held off doing so because I have a hard time rembering all the sensations of the smoke. That said, it is easy to rate, it's a bases clearing 4 star review. The C&D base flavor profile is there, kind of a strong malt. All the aroma components described above pop in an out through the bowl, but malt, straight tobacco, and leather are the most obvious. The Perique is always around sometimes flaring up. The flavor profile of this Perique is very good and it's the tangy type fermented type, not particularly spicy and not earthy. Despite so many flavors they blend well and that is why it's hard to describe.

As with almost every tobacco a little drying is beneficial. The first third of the bowl is pretty bold and has that kind of unrefined signature I find with C&D. However, once it more fully ignites the burn slows and the flavors open up. This blend is greatly benefited by smoking in a churchwarden that tames some of the rough edges. I'm sure some age would do the same. My current favor and growing.

As a well known reviewer stated on Youtube: "This is a deep dark smoke". I totally agree!

I really didn't understand how much I appreciate perique until I tried this blend. There is not much virginia sweetness to find here but a lot of nose pleasing notes is present! A must try for the perique lover, and even for the enthusiast who doesn't crave latakia or pronounced virginia sweetness in every bowl.

I love this stuff and it's truly a satisfying smoke. It's really a strong weed so take it easy!

I bought a half pound of this delicacy, not sure if I would enjoy that much Perique. When I opened the tin the scent was delicious and complex. Every time I loaded my pipe I had to pause to enjoy the scent. It was easy to light a lightly rubbed out flake, and it stayed lit. The taste reminded me of plum pudding. I used to have a problem enjoying Virginia because I didn't know how to smoke it. That lesson having been learned by smoking several pounds of SG Full Virginia Flake, now I can smoke these blends without any bite. This blend, in particular, has absolutely no bite. The nicotine content was very high, so I normally smoke this one in a smaller bowl. I was sad to get to the bottom of the tin, and ordered more. This stuff is amazing!

I really don't know why I stray from Perique; or C&D for that matter. Perique has got to be most perfect form of tobacco to ever grace humanity. Bayou Morning, while good, isn't great for me. It has the nice plum sweetness Perique offers, but not enough of the pepper IMO. It's definitely a pleasure to smoke. But I could be biased; I prefer most of C&D's tobacco. I think this leans more towards the Escudo style vapers. Nice, pleasant and tasty. It's good enough I doubt vaper fans would regret buying it.

I really like this one. A great strong Vaper for the seasoned Vaper or Perique lover. The perique is pervasive, but not overwhelming as the stoved Vas are there adding their cider like sweetness to the mix. It is tasty and strong. They must like them strong on the bayou if this is how they choose to start their day.

Characteristic to C & D, the flakes are thick, but this does not bother me. It takes a little to get it going, but once lit it stays that way. Looking back on my notes I noted how I had four bowls of this in one day back in October and all were fantastic. This leads me to believe that this would also make a great all day smoke. It is not often you can say that about a nic heavy blend.

My first favourite band was KISS. I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day. My first taste of perique was BMF. I was literally blown away (in a good way!) When I grew up and my tastes evolved, I realized that both of these past favorites lacked nuance. I mean, I still enjoy KISS, and I still enjoy BMF (tons of tangy perique and a decent nic hit!), but there are better options out there. More balanced, more mature, and more subtle. This blend gives me tang and spice, but very little in the way of sweet dried fruit notes. But hey, sometimes you just want to turn off your brain and enjoy the buzz. That's cool too.

C&D, Bayou Morning Flake: An Unbalanced Journey to Flavor-Town

The red Virginia leaf is quite earthy with some tanginess and adds a pleasant body to the smoke. It has a distinct C&D fermented aroma to it, just like the Carolina Red Flake. The perique is strongly applied in this blend. I like perique, but the spicy and dried fruit flavors get lost in the intensity. There is quite a bit of flavor here and I can see why people like this flake. However, I would rather cellar and smoke GL Pease Telegraph Hill or SG Cabbies Mixture.

I found this to be a hit or miss! Some days I liked the smoke and others days, not so much. I contribute that to the 25% Perque. That leave seems to play with my head. Perhaps to much nicotine for me.

I read one reviewer state that he preferred the ribbon cut over the flakes. Maybe I'll give that a try in time

This is similar to Bayou Morning without the addition of any bright Virginia. There is plenty of fruit and plum coming from the red Virginia with a high sugar content. It offers some earthy notes too. Waves of spice join in from the 25% perique. I get both red and black pepper through the nose. This flake has a pretty potent nicotine hit! A fresh tin will show some harshness and lack of balance halfway through the bowl but finishes strong. I've smoked this in briars and corn cobs but had my best bowl in a meerschaum.

I recently opened a tin from 2004. Bayou Morning Flake with over a decade of age on it will remind you why you smoke a pipe. The Virginia and perique are completely married and any rough notes are gone. The strength has mellowed and the flavor has sweetened with more pronounced fruit notes. One of the best smokes I've ever had!

I love Cornell & Diehl tobacco. Exhausted Rooster, Pegasus, Old Joe Krantz....the Burly Flakes and After Hours. But I dont care much for this one. There are so many great Va/pers out there.....McClelland's Beacon and Beacon Extra, Gawith's St James Flake, Reiners Long Golden Flake....and quite a few more. But this feels harsh and I lose the taste in it. I love that it has a potent nic hit...thats not the issue, but compared to, say, Beacon Extra, also pretty potent, this is pretty rustic. Some may like that. Its great quality leaf, as is always the case with C&D, but Beacon Extra is much smoother and frankly much tastier. Aging might well help this one. I have a tin Im leaving alone for a year or two and then we'll see. But as is, Id prefer a number of other blends of this type that are out there.

even though the name suggests a smoked morning I do not recommend because it is strong for the time , there is a good amount of Perique if we compare with the ESCUDO and McClelland St. James Woods (because I tasted them with a deadline two weeks between them ) , it's a mix for those who already have an experience in pipe, because beginners could be an inhibiting factor in the noble art . The Perique is present until more than half of the bowl losing its strength in the final half , even me being a difficult tobacco smoking as this is very intense , but it is not indomitable , like any good tobacco complex requires is patience , if so it will be a truly smoke pleasurable. For this I chose a churchwarden , it helps to note the nuances of flavor . Not recommend to beginners as a first Vaper because, as said is biased to beginners , for both the ESCUDO is the best option but for those already acquainted with the Perique is an option and both

a very tart and acrid blend. i did not find this blend very good due to the high bitterness and acrid taste. it might be a good blend for those of you that likes that special tartness and acrid taste of perique.

Bayou Morning Flake is the quintessential morning smoke for the vaper lover. The red stoved VA offers a wonderful mellow sweetness, with the Perique providing some spiciness and strength. I find that this blend needs some moisture, else the strength will knock you of your chair. This is my go-to morning smoke, never failing to deliver that deep & tasty smoking experience.

First off, if you are a smoker of stoved va.s, or va/per blends, and you do not like this flake, you need to clean your pipe or something. The tin aroma is a little like a McClelland without the ketchup smell, with just a whiff of perique. If I'd had even the slightest of stuffy nose, I would never have caught the perique in the tin aroma. It smells predominately of stoved dark virginia, and it smells delicious.

Now, this flake is not the easiest to rub out. It is a thick broken flake, and my sample tended toward the leathery in consistency; a bit like an extra thick slice of Gawith flake. But lighting it was no problem. Thick clouds of smoke immediately billowed forth, gradually settling down to a nice, comforting stream of that familiar va/per aroma. The flake exhibited no tendency to bite; A+.

I smoked this in a nice sized Oom Paul, so I expected that it would be a troublesome affair keeping it lit. But, the tobacco continued burning with no problem, requiring only one relight toward the bottom of the deep bowl. I liked this flake. The pipe aroma was inoffensive; rather more pleasant the the acrid smell I am accustomed to with other va/per blends.

The flavor of this tobacco was that of a very high quality stoved va. with undercurrents (that's undercurrents, not undertones-like a river of...) of the best perique I have ever experienced. The perique, while by no means subdued, managed to provide a generous peppery texture to the va. without being overbearing. The perique used in this flake tended to make me think more of hues and textures than flavors. And that's a good thing; means it's working on several levels of my senses of smell and taste. The flavor was warm and seductive, like a woman from a far off exotic land. The sidestream smoke tickled my nostrils like a musky perfume.

For any fans of va/per, especially flakes, give this a try. If you are looking for a daily smoke that gets you by without a lot of effort, put it away for special ocassions. This tobacco should only be smoked if you have the time to truly appreciate it.

I found this to be a pleasant enough blend with enough perique to keep anyone happy. The Va's aren't very sweet, but instead remind me of the variety used in Briar Fox, of which this blend is a close cousin. At the Kansas City Show last year this stuff sold out in record time. So why not the higher rating?

I abhor the cut!!!

C&D is the only company that I know of who uses it, and I must say that it vexes me to no end. If it were only sliced thinner I think it would be much more manageable. Now before everyone gets going I should point out that Flake form tobacco is my favorite style due to the control one has over the tobacco. But these chunky slices come apart in sheets of tobacco leaf that do not burn well for me at all. I will stick to 633 and Escudo, both of which although burn hotter, are also sweeter, and much easier to control.

The aspects of the fairly bold, peppery, earthy, woody, plummy, lightly figgy perique (which is 25% of the blend) elevate it to the lead component. The red Virginia provides some tangy dried dark fruit, earth, wood, bread, sugar, light spice, citrus, and floralness. It is less obvious here than it is in the ribbon version as it’s a few notches below the full support level. The dark Virginia plays a little below that with some tangy dark fruit, earth, wood, bread, light floralness, sugar and spice. The light amount of bright Virginia produces some sour lemon, tart citrus, floralness, and grass notes in the background. The strength is potent enough to reach TR’s strong level. Has a full taste. The nic-hit is almost as vigorous as the overall strength. The spice content may tingle the tongue of a fast puffer, and I recommend a slow smoking cadence. Has a little more roughness than the ribbon cut version. The flakes are mildly moist, and don’t need dry time. Burns cool, clean and a tad slow with a very consistent peppery, fruity, floral flavor that extends to the pleasantly long lingering after taste. The room note is much stronger. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires some relights. This flake version is a little punchy, peppery, stronger with a lightly more fermented flavor than the ribbon cut. Certainly not an all day smoke. Eat something first, and have a drink handy. Three stars.

C&D- Bayou Morning Flake

If you are a C&D fan you know by now that anytime they mention flakes, its just a broken mix of used to be flakes.

This blend had 6 months of age on it. I must say this blend was moist in the tin, and after letting it dry for 15 minutes it was somewhat ready to smoke.

The perique was immediately there and if you enjoy the pepper spiciness in your blends this one will scratch this itch. The virginias were less hay and more fresh cut grass which seems an odd pairing.

I was hoping for more of a bready virginia to mix with the pepper spice.

I will re-visit this one in 2-3 years when the blend are actually ready to smoke as seems to be the case with many of the C&D Blends.

Although I haven't tried all 2,346 blends Cornell and Diehl produces, I would venture to say that this is their best. Sure, they have a lot of good blends, but this one is unlike many blends on the market. It is a Vaper with both flavor and gusto, not to mention a ton of perique. The high amount of perique brings out some wonderful darker notes without detracting from the Virginias. I'll repeat that oft-repeated truth about perique: after some threshold percentage in a blend, perique goes from being spicy and conspicuous to rich and nuanced with a subtle flavor profile all its own. Plums and figs often abound, at least in the tin note, and it lends the Virginias a lovely ripeness. This is what this blend is about, no question, and it works very well.

What you get is synergy here - this blend is more than the sum of its parts - neither Virginias nor perique subordinate the other, but they form an amalgamation that is quite delicious and completely its own thing. It's strong and fully flavored, but balanced - from sweet to sour, from spicy to smooth, there is a yin for every yang, which makes this blend tireless. I've been primed enough by the labeling to not only smoke this in the morning, but smoke this every morning. I cannot imagine starting my day without it - as soon as I open my eyes I think: coffee, Bayou.

Oh, the tin aroma is unique too, not unlike a musty barn: hay, manure, equal parts acrid and sweet. (My wife thinks it smells like horses, but I'm a city-slicker, so I cannot attest.) And yes, FIGS. The real kind.

And yes, the flake is better than the ribbon. Better behaved, better tasting, and ages better. Although it is excellent fresh - preferable to me, actually - like a well structured Bordeaux that stays sturdy and balanced after a decade, you can squirrel this away confidently; it will repay with dividends.

Opening the tin brought out an intense smell of apricots and stewed plum, some little hay and some mustiness. I knew I'd like it as I haven't come across a VaPer I didn't like. Perhaps I was looking forward to the change as I've been VaPer-less for about a month.

The cut is thick broken flake pieces which break apart very easily and are not sticky at all, unlike some European flakes.

Takes light easily, and didn't need a relight until the heel, no moisture in the pipe either so ready to smoke immediately.

The taste is strong, strong pepper in fact, particularly on the retrohale, and semi sweet. The plums and apricots show up every couple of puffs, the mustiness thankfully does not. There's more pepper than spice here, as expected with 25% Perique, but it is great for my tastes. Stays very consistent throughout the bowl, and very pleasurable. This is not DLNRs, this is its young, strong, loud American nephew. A bit rougher around the edges but an overall great guy to hang out with.

For me this is a 4 star product, as although my first love after Latakia were Dunhill DLNRs and Solani 633, I often wished they had some punch. Well this packs the N punch for sure, and doesn't lack in flavour. Some may be put off by its strength but this is my review, so highly recommended.

C&D’s Bayou Morning Flake is the strongest and most full VA/Per I’ve smoked, just nipping GLP’s Fillmore at the wire. In the tin one finds red-ish brown and darker brown well-broken flakes that smell like a musty version the premium Corsicana, TX fruitcake that we always keep in the house over the Holidays . My tin is dated 08-12-18, so it has had a chance to age, and sitting in its ‘re-sealed” tin after opening it has also helped the best of this fine blend to blossom. I load it loosely in a #4 VA/Per briar and it lights and smokes down without a hitch. The sour, slightly musty Perique dominates, smelling and tasting like truffle with spices that are more of the intense, exotic bakery variety than pepper, however, there is some cayenne and some paprika melded with the baking spices. Either the red VAs are air cured or they are lightly stoved, or they are a blend. They are like moist , bready, fermenting barley, along with dark fruit leather beneath, and they are well chosen as a complement for this Perique-rich blend. The lot both smells and tastes bready, yeasty, musty, sour, and surprisingly sweet for red VA. Strength develops to medium and heads on to strong. Tastes develop over ½ a bowl to full the way I smoke it. Room note is tolerable. Aftertaste is a lingering best of the smoke.

Bayou Morning Flake is an easy smoke for me, and an easy 4 stars. But then, I am a geezer and a codger, as well, so YMMV. Though anyone who’s careful might smoke and enjoy this blend I guess it’s best suited to experienced Perique lovers. I’m pretty confident predicting time will make this blend even better, aged in tins and jars, alike.

I bought this one a few months ago and have smoked it on and off. It has a wonderful musty worm dirt tin note, nice dark/medium brown broken flake. I was expecting an actual flake hence the name but instead it was course ribbon like tobacco. A little moist in the tin at the time but has dried out a little bit this past month. I did not jar this. This smokes fantastic but at times does lose some of the sweetness around half the bowl down. The Perique and Virginia in this one is excellent. Wish I had a campfire to sit around while smoking this one. I do like this one better than the Bayou Morning ribbon that I have smoked. A definite try in my book, especially if you like Perique. I did not find this too strong in the nic department either. I am seriously thinking about buying more. The tin date on this one was 082018.

FLAKE is written on the package,but the cut is a broken flake, wtf? ok.. no matters,it's not the first time that happens ,with other brands too.

The smell of tobacco is intense, Virginia has a sweet scent and reminiscent of dried fruit and sweet cocoa, very pleasant! The whole is well balanced by perique that gives it a pungent note. In pipe the smoke is full-bodied ! the two tobaccos are well blended, but it is very easy to recognize both of them (Perique 25% !). I liked it a lot, because in my opinion the tobaccos used for this Bayou Morning are of the highest quality and i love blend that have full body and rich aroma like this one. For now it's my favorite VaPe, recommended! To smoke at least once. Bravi!

Bayou Morning Flake.

This one belongs to a small group of tins of US manufactures, which I was able to put my hands on some seven years ago, and now smoking one after the other since I’m thinking that they have been cellared enough.

I was expecting a VaPer some way “delicate”… for the morning. It’s a stout smoke, instead. A lot more than I could expect. The flakes are beautifully loosened, it’s easy to work them between the fingers and load a bowl. Burns fine and very cool, with clouds of smoke. Just a little sweetness, the smoke is mainly earthy and woody. 25% Perique ? Difficult to believe, I detect some deep fruit character, but not pepper. Great body. As the nic hit is concerned, it’s well past the medium mark.

Very different animal from the VaPer an european is used to smoke. I would say a rustic tobacco. Quality of the leaves is high.

Recommended!

This is a tasty perique laden tobacco. However, for me it is too strong and can become harsh towards the middle to end of the bowl. I love virginia perique tobacco's and so I had to try this one, however I will stick with Cabbies Mixture instead.

Nice, sweet and peppery tobacco; the VA typical syrupy taste with a hint of hay and ripe fruit goes well together with the sharp sting of the perique. Retrohale shows off nuances of dried wheat and oat. I really enjoyed this, will buy more.

When I first tried this, I honestly didn't like it. I put it away and forgot about it. After I got a bit more experienced in pipe tobacco smoking I figured I'd try this one again. The tin had aged about 7 months and man it was a real nice tobacco. Now for the tobacco. It has a great tin aroma and while smoking it I noticed that the perique comes out here and there quite nicely. I didn't get any tongue bite this time like I had when I first tried it. The room note is pleasant too. I will be having this blend regularly now and will buy another tin for sure. I recommed this as I've grown quite fond of perique blends.

Beautiful flakes in tin, perfect humidity, packed nicely. Once started, burned very well. The tin aroma of this stuff is a study in balance between the VA's and the Perique. Old cheese, sweet oats, tangy lemon grass, earthy, funky aromas. All balanced on the figs, green hay, yeast dough, and oatmeal aromas of the Virginia.

The flavor does not have quite the same balance. The Perique asserts itself one minute and fades the next. But the bowl still gets better and better from the start to the bottom of the bowl. The Perique may be a little fickle, but it is some of the most delicious Perique leaf I've ever had. Perique Freaks will love this one. The PER in this VaPer simply has to be tried.

this review is coming from someone who will buy a tin of perique and puff away on it straight and be happy as a clam... this blend has tons of perique. it's well blended and very balanced with big perique flavor. the virginias are nice and fairly sweet.

this blend suffers from the C&D exploding flake problem. it's good when you first open the tin but after a while it's confetti.

great stuff. too bad c&d can't make a good flake cut.

Bulk: Broken flake. Since this had been in a bag for a few months, it was dry as tinder.

Packing & Burning: Lit and stayed lit readily, since it was bone dry, but it did not burn overly quickly. Provided for slight tongue bite. The flakes just crumbled, due to dryness.

Taste: Left a typical VAPER aroma with less emphasis on the perique.

Nicotine: Almost overwhelming.

Overall: The perique sledge hammer hit me just after finishing the bowl. The nicotine strength of the perique was really too much. 3.5 stars.

A good VAPER to me but strong on Perique.

With that said i let the tin open for one full day before smoking it, not because it's to moist but to let it settle a bit because smoked when freshly open i had to hold my stomach for it was exploding so don't forget to let it open for a good amount of time.

Not a beginner's flake but not complex either just a decent VAPER .

This was my first foray into the world of VA/PERS and my second attempt at a C & D blend. So far, I'm not impressed. That doesn't mean C & D doesn't make a quality product. It's just that so far, I can't seem to get my arms around their tobacco. I love the idea of being able to buy locally blended products, but I'm having a hard time enjoying their smokes. I have three more unopened C & D blends that I will be reviewing at a later date and hope to have a better outcome.

Anyway, I'm not sure in this case if it's C & D or the perique. I'm not a big fan of pepper anyway, and this blend left my throat sore and just wasn't my cup of tea at all. In fact, I gave away the tin, minus about five bowls.

I will never condemn any tobacco because tastes are so different, and from reading the other reviews posted here, this blend is obviously well received. However, it just didn't work for me.

I find this in no way mellow or smooth. It is really all about perique cloaked in sweet leaf (though not sweetened) with nothing else to write home about. The leaf quality is good. My beef is with the blending. I agree with another reviewer that the cut is also unimpressive.

I have an unopened tin each of Kajun Kake and Pease's Fillmore. These are are going to be my last trys with Va/Per. blends from C&D/Pease. I hope they are good, as I like to buy from my countrymen when possible.

UPDATE: 07/06/05 I rubbed out BMF more completely. It dried out a little, but the moisture was about perfect the day I opened the tin. The "bitey" reference in my original review was more of a bitter taste and upon closer examination, that briar had started to go sour, a condition I have since remedied. I have tried it in a small 3/4 bent Meershaum. This yielded more tobacco taste than the briar, less than the Missouri Meershaum cob I tried originally.

I like a stronger tasting tobacco, one with more body. BMF does not make the grade for me. I am down-grading my rating accordingly. Too bad. I had such high hopes for this one. I do not intend to buy it again. I am getting tired of high priced tinned tobacco disappointments. *

I have concluded that I do not fit the profile of the test population that Cornell&Diehl must use to test their blends. The first two were Canal Boat and Cumberland something. Both left me unimpressed.

Last week I purchase a 2 oz. tin of Bayou Morning Flake for $11.50 at a local tobacco shop (the only game in town). One cannot fault this blend with regard to quality. It is top notch. No stems or tobacco dust. And I enjoyed the odor of my second-hand smoke: a nice tobacco scent.

The taste was extremely mild to my palate, almost to the point of being tasteless. It responded best in a large Missouri Meershaum that has become my favorite pipe. In a large 1/2 bent briar there was less taste and it began to get "bitey" towards the end of the bowl. I am going to let it dry a little and try it in my small 3/4 bent Meershaum

The red Virginia in Bayou seems to have virtually no sweetness to it. There was little flavor or depth. To use sound as an analogy, it struck me as thin, high pitched and flat.

I have rated it a 2 because I am hoping that a little age, a little drying will improve the impression it has made thus far. If I don't see any improvement I will not be buying more.

This comes as an oddly cut flake. The flakes are thick cut and fall apart almost on their own. It comes with a perfect moisture content and lights and burns well. My problem with this tobacco is that it lacks flavor. I'm not sure I'd guess it even contained virginias. No sweetness nor any of the hay/oats flavors I look for. The perique dominates the flat flavors of the other tobaccos even if it's not added in high percentage. A fan of savory blends [read no sweetness] might enjoy this one more than I do.

I was surprised to find that BMF is vastly different from BM. BMF has a depth of flavor not found in bm and is smoother. BMF puts forth profound notes of fig and raisin, rich hay and tang, earth and a pleasant sweetness, all punctuated by a bit of satisfying pepper. You'll even find a chocolate note or two in the aftertaste. I'm sure the 3 years of age on the tin was tremendously beneficial. BMF is a top notch smoke and easily compares and competes with the best VaPers available today. 4 stars.

I will confess, I'm rather confused as to why this is at all linked with Bayou Morning. If I were to rework the C&D lineup, this one would be called Bayou Night, and the current Bayou Night would be something else entirely. After discovering how much I loved the Bayou Morning ribbon, I ordered two tins of this; one to smoke right away, one to age. The tin note was nothing outstanding; woody, some dark fruit, and the cheesy note of fresher perique. Like many of C&D's "Flake" offerings, it's more of a loose broken flake. Perfect moisture content upon opening. The unaged version was... Not great. I wasn't expecting a sweet Va/Per, but this was almost overwhelmingly woody and earthy, somewhat bitter, and had a tendency to be unpleasantly spicy. Considering Chenet's Cake is my all-time favorite, that means something. I soldiered through the remainder of the tin, and intentionally forgot about the other tin for a year. Given that that year was 2020, there were many other things to think about. Digging through my aged tins last week, I came across that tin again. The memory of pain fades, and I decided to give it another try. My word, what a difference a year can make. The smoke was now richly fruity, toasty, and still quite earthy, reminiscent in some ways of Boston Brown Bread. Still properly spicy, but not in a brash way as it was before. With at least a year of age, this becomes a fantastic smoke for a perique lover like myself. Doesn't bite, pretty decent nicotine content, room note is unpleasant if you don't smoke Va/Pers yourself. I will give three stars for the aged product; in that form, it warrants 4. However, I must subtract one star, as that is not the form it arrives in. I would be willing to pay more for it if it were aged prior to shipping. Addendum 04/22: Giving back the fourth star. I'm beginning to think the first tin I got was an anomaly; I've been through 3x 8 oz tins in record time. This is quickly becoming my favorite VaPer, and making a strong case for favorite blend overall.

Go ahead, I cannot compare it with its ribbon version because I have not tried it yet, although it will not take long to do it, since it seems like an interesting exercise.

When you open the tin, a broken flake cut appears in dark tones that gives off a very rich aroma of stewed fruits and some vinegar. Although tobacco comes a bit wet, it burns really well without the need to dry it and it can be smoked easily and carelessly without the danger of biting your tongue. The flake pieces crumble very easily, making this tobacco very easy to handle. Once lit, it burns slowly, providing a relatively long-lasting smoke.

Despite containing a not inconsiderable dose of perique, it does not feel overwhelming. As it cannot be otherwise, its presence is noticeable, but I would say that it is not even dominant, but rather it seems that it is very well integrated with the virgina that accompanies it. In taste it is less sweet than most va / per that I have smoked. In my opinion, it is dominated by earthy and slightly sour notes, sometimes salty, making it tasty and different. At times I have also found that I perceive a slightly wine-like taste. In relation to the amount of nicotine it has, I agree with the majority of reviewers on this page: its presence is noticeable.

As an anecdote I will say that I thought I was going to "dispatch" this review with a few lines, but finally I have been coming up with more things to write than I originally thought. I don't know why this has happened, but I will ponder the smoke-shrouded matter of this Bayou Morning Flake.

02/14/2022: I recently had the happy experience of smoking a 17-year-old can of BMF and it turned out to be what I expected: exquisite. The perique increased its potency giving it robustness and more sour notes. If you have a chance to get a tin, you should not miss the opportunity. I also smoked “Bayou Morning” and discovered that it is not a ribbon version as it has nothing to do with BMF. They only look alike in name...

Presentation: What I like about C&D is their exceptional broken flake. Has to be one of the best in the industry. Bayou Morning Flake is consistent with just about every other flake format I have found from this company. Inside the tin comes generally a large amount of semi-intact flakes with the scraps at the bottom. Great to break apart and comes at the perfect moisture. No dry time needed for this one.

Palette: Prune, fig, fermentation throughout. A lovely blend to stick your nose and and take a few whiffs throughout the day and completely different than the ribbon. Nice bready reds create the base and no doubt add to the lovely semi-sweet aroma that carries through the smoke. Not as sweet as some Va/Pers that include bright Va's, but in the realm of C&D, I find that their red VA's are par for the course, considering their flagship blend Small Batch Carolina Red Flake. Not too much pepper in the bouquet, but it is there if you linger for a bit. The pepper comes through in the retrohale. This is a bold black peppercorn taste. Just the right amount.

Performance: Burns exceptionally well, especially with a more firm packing in the bowl. Leaves a little dottle and moisture at the bottom, but really, what blend doesn't? Medium to high nicotine. A full meal is recommended before indulging as if a few hours have passed it tends to creep up quite quickly in the last 1/3. Not an all day blend but certainly repeatable, with some time in between.

Conclusion: It's been said multiple times in previous reviews, this is a different breed compared to the regular ribbon cut. Whereas the ribbon cut is more dry, haylike, and tended to burn hot for me, the flake format takes all of that an throws it out the window. The marrying of the flavors is noticeable and offers a more nuanced smoke. I didn't care for the ribbon and makes you wonder why all tobacco doesn't come as flakes instead. It just completely changes the experience for the better. I enjoy this blend from time to time when I want a stout in my face blend. I'm glad I decided to pick the flake up after trying the ribbon. While it is a mediocre smoke, I don't think I'll be buying any more tins in the future, as I have my Va/Per fix from GL Pease Fillmore. I'd say skip the ribbon cut and go straight for the flake. They both are similar in profile, but the flake is only marginally better.

The flake version of bayou morning is VERY different from the ribbon. Totally different vapers, so dont assume one is like the other -- at all!

The ribbon has big hay, grass, and red pepper spices. Its raw, clear as day, clean sharp flavors. The perique comes through so spicy it's almost tobasco sauce hot, particularly prior to some jar time. It can get some sweetness but requires a year or so in the tin to get there, and even then it's not an overwhelming sweetness.

The flake is much more rounded, creamier, sweeter, and richer. The grassy/hay flavors are reduced in favor of a buttery richness. The sweetness is bolder and comes out stronger. The spiciness is not as intense and is plummier, although it's still spicier than escudo.

Both are excellent vapers, both unique and special, but for very different reasons and moods. I have never found a vaper with the raw hot pepper spice of the ribbon (think elizabethan with a kick), and have found very few with the rich every day smoking potential of the flake (similar to cabbies mixture or aged escudo). Both will stay in large quantities in my cellar.

I don't know why this doesn't have more 4 star reviews. This is my go to tobacco right now. The Virginia is sweet and of high quality. The perique has a nice nicotine kick. It burns smooth. Has little bite. Just really good tobacco. I think this is better than both Elizabethan Mixture and Acadian Perique. If you like VaPers or just Virginia based blends in general you will like this. The nicotine may be more than some can handle. But this has been my favorite blend as of late. It can be an all day smoke, but it will get a bit nippy if you go crazy with it like I do.

Opening the tin , woah there ! Very strong fruity figgy , strongest i have ever encountered! I smoked a medium sized bowl and was mildly nauseated. The Virginia is mildly sweet and the Perique fruity but peppery later on through the nose , I recommend for those who can take stronger blends but the good news for me is I did not toss this but blended it half and half with 515rc 1 . It is now great and in my rotation! Very high quality Virginia and Perique!

The presentation is rustic, and the flakes are broken. It's something I enjoy about Cornell & Diehl's flakes, as well as Gawith & Hoggarth's flakes as well.

The smell in the tin/jar is musty, sour, and kind of like some kind of dough, and there is hint of sweetness in the background.

This blend is strong, it's peppery, but don't let that scare you. It's an interesting blend. If you wonder what a lot of Perique can do to a blend, this is a good example. I feel like the Perique outshines the Virginia in this blend. The sweetness is there, but it's fighting the Perique's brashness. The Virginias in this blend are good, and even better with age. There are some dark fruit notes, some red wine notes, plum, raisin, and the mustiness and nuttiness that I detect from Perique. There is also a resinous, sour note that I get in this blend. It's almost like mint. There is a bit of the cereal and molassess note I get with Virginia blends, and some cinnamon notes develop, even some cocoa. Overall the taste is interesting because of the high Perique content.

The strength is strong, and the nicotine is high in this blend. I advise you to have a full stomach and maybe some water, or something sweet to drink while smoking this, unless you are a heavyweight. I never smoke on an empty stomach, and I did not find Peterson Irish Flake to be that strong. Bayou Morning Flake is strong.

I would recommend this to the person that like strong flakes and strong blends, even earthy blends, but not necessarily to the person that likes Virginia Perique blends. There is a lot of Perique, and it changes the character and expectation of the typical Virginia Perique blend's taste profile.

I really enjoy vapers as many do 1st off. I smoke every one I can get my pipe around and I would say I'm still searching for that perfect one. Almost all of them turn out to be a little weak or a little strong and bayou morning is in the latter category for me. I've come to enjoy tobaccos that are in the medium range. This one is good and well put together, but is a little bit overwhelming to be something I can smoke on a regular basis. I find that my tastes for blends change fairly drastically and it is really hard for me to find a blend that stays consistently good to my mouth and mind. It's weird, but I'm sure I'm not the only one. That said, I've come to understand what blend types should age really well and I'm hoping a few years down the road all the tins of bayou morning I've got stashed just might end up in that coveted #1 va/per spot. I will try to remember to update when that time comes.

Perique is the star in this blend. Upon opening the tin, a deeply fermented aroma wafted up—akin to an aged maduro cigar with some perique funk. There is a slight ammonia aroma, but I think the smell derives from the mustiness of 25% perique and does not carry into the smoke.

At first light, the perique dominates. There is some spice, but the flavor profile of the perique differs from the other va/pers that I have tried. Here, the perique offers less dark fruit and spice flavor notes, and is more musty with a slight cucumber-esque crispness to the smoke. I wonder if this flavor profile has to do with the process in pressing the flake. The Virginias offer a good amount of sweetness that helps keep the blend from devolving into a perique-bomb. The flakes rub out easily and the moisture was near perfect to my standards, needing only a little time to dry out. Overall, Bayou Morning Flake is a decent va/per from C&D. That said, I enjoy G. L. Pease, Telegraph Hill much, much more.

So I thought this tin of Picayune I had ruminating in the cellar would be the strongest smoke I'd ever get to...eventually (Picayune smokes were known in the old south to put hair on the chest back in the gap) but what could top this?!

I mean this was not a toby on my wishlist list...the same one I diligently update on here year to year-hoping against hope that 'she who does no wrong' might eventually look at it before father's day. And since we live very close to a Bayou she thinks it's gotta be good, I guess.

So this tin brought about many bouts of SVTs, and many episodes of nausea b4 I got it through my thick skull that this blend is way strong. Finally I read up and followed yalls lead, teeny tiny meer did the trick. By tins end I decided these Vas are actually cigarette tobacco, and very strong cigs at that! Seriously, once the perique softened due to aging while opened I distinctly smelled cigarette tobacco. Can't repeat what 'she who purchased it' refered to it as :(

It's too strong, end of story.

It has been a long time since I get knocked out by nicotine. Well, this one did the trick. Half bowl was enough to mess with me.

Not a bad tobacco, tought. Just too much strenght for me to handle with pleasure. The high amount of perique gives this a different taste, instead of grassy flavor you´ll get a more earthy one. If you like nic-kick and is looking for something with a unusual taste, go for it!

So far so meh.......sorry, I really wanted to like this one but it just seemed more than a bit disappointing. Not a lot of flavor/zip to it...and I was hoping the perique would take the drivers seat or at least ride shotgun but it just didn't even seem to be in there anywhere. I will give it another go in a meer and see if I can find the hidden perique.

This is rather heavy on the Perique-I am used to adding blending Perique to my usual VAs and VAPERs but this one really got up my nose, so to speak. I don't think I will smoke it every day. Very good as an occasional diversion, and I may find I like this blend once in a while, but I can't see myself buying more than two ounces at a time. A word on the cut of C&D-it can be a little bit coarse, but you have to dry it for at least two hours and rub it out thoroughly for best results. Or just get it to the perfect moisture level and stuff the flake, though this doesn't always work for me with C&D.

This rubbed out, packed, lit and stayed lit very well. The virginias in my tin looked more yellow than red. The tin aroma was like apple cider. I found the flavor to be much less complex and tending toward the upper registers as compared to St. James' Woods, which I recently reviewed. A bit grassy, sweet and fruity, with a touch of toastiness. Not bad, but not interesting enough to bring me back. I could get a bit nauseated smoking this, but I think it's more my particular reaction to perique than the nicotene strength (which of course comes with perique) or any other flaw in the tobacco itself. Somewhat recommended for va/per fans, especially those with a sweet tooth.

These comparative broad, thick flakes had a good moisture content and presented no packing problems even without rubout. Initial lighting was a bit difficult but minimal relights were needed and a cool smoke without bite resulted. I prefer a stronger Perique influence if I choose a Va/Per and thought this blend lacked that, flavor and sweetness from the VAs from start to the end.

Distinctive Virginia-Perique flake, this comes in very thick, dark slices that are not the easiest to rub out or pack. Rather to thick to just roll up and shove into the pipe- I tried this and used up most of a box of matches keeping it lit, it needs to be well rubbed and teased apart before packing.

It doesnt have the best burning characteristics, and may be a little trouble to light and keep burning, but the flavour is well worth it- very distinctive and quite full. It has a dusty, cigar like characteristic, slightly smokey but unlike latakia, which builds up in strength through the bowl. About halfway through the taste of perique becomes apparent, with a nice background pepperyness, but does not dominate- the taste of the other tobaccos is so strong.

It burns to the end, but with many relights, without gurgling, and without harshness, just becoming a stronger taste. Nonsmokers may not like the smell, it is quite strong, but it is not foul. I enjoyed it as a change from the more fruity style of Dunhill Navy Rolls- it is a distinctive and individual tobacco.

I keep trying with this stuff, as the flavour is quite enjoyable- really peppery, and yet somehow mellow if smoked really slowly. The only way to make it smokeable is to rub it out really well, right into ribbons. And the cut is so thick, these really are ribbons- I can almost tie my hair back with them! I've had thick flakes (Holger Danske Royal Navy) and thin flakes (St Bruno) and all have worked quite well. This stuff looks like they chopped it with an axe... I think they would have been better off to leave it in sticks and sell 2 oz chunks as plug. All it would take is a sharp knife to make this into something wonderful.

Not a bad smoke, but it involved a lot of work and very little reward. The flakes are fairly coarse and broad. Out of the tin the tobacco was too moist and required many relights. I often break up flakes rather than rubbing them out fully, but with this tobacco, even when dried out, and rubbed out, I was relighting too often.

The flavor is initially mild and unexceptional. It gets stronger midway through the bowl but it is not any more enjoyable. It gains strength but is still bland and one dimensional. This blend's perique was more prominent than what I am used to. Perhaps perique specific fans would appreciate the dynamic here. Bayou Morning Flake is not good enough to warrant such effort.

Oh, my! This is my first perique. Very tasty, almost chewy. Tried some in my Peterson Shannon #3. A mouthful of smoke leaves my mouth tasting almost like I have just eaten something satisfying. And did I detect a slight hint of black pepper?

It gurgled a bit towards the bottom, but I put that down to not packing my pipe well.

I'm fortunate enough to work out of doors most of the time, so it's easy for me to grab a smoke during the day. I'll be keeping my tin of Bayou Morning in my tool chest for an all-day smoke.

I really liked the packing and cut of this tobacco. Perfect moisture level right out of the tin; two inches long, thin strips stacked together in a bundle, with various browns and darker browns wrapped in a paper holding in the moisture and aromas. The tobacco burns great, has an excellent earthy and spicey taste, and keeps a uniform flavor throughout the smoke. Right now it is cold in the midwest, and this tobacco is just right.

I?ve gone thru 8oz pretty quickly, so I guess I like it. But it tends to get nasty towards the end, really heating up. It?s rather moist, which is unusual for C&D. It seems to be getting better towards the bottom of the can, perhaps due to drying out a bit. Don?t think I?ll go for this again, as 8oz costs $30, and I can get a whole pound of MC2015 for $25, and I like it better. This is the only flake C&D produces, they told me on the phone. Expensive for them to produce, sounds like, takes them three days to press and process a batch. A very nice flake, obviously high quality tobacco, but not worth the premium price.

I made the mistake of smoking two tins of Bayou Morning Flake within weeks of taking up the pipe. Then I went ahead and ordered a pound of the bulk version having never sampled the blend. It's fair to say I burned out on Bayou Morning Flake, which was probably my first favorite smoke and a worthy introduction to Perique. It's been a few years, I should probably put in another order.

=Original Review=

Bayou Morning Flake was one of the first tins I bought when I started with the pipe, and I couldn't stop praising it at the time. I began vigorously tracking down Perique blends as a consequence and having tried most of the big ones, I now find myself underwhelmed.

I just find this bland. It's not lacking in strength or flavor, but what flavor it does have is consistently boring, and the stoving process of the Virginias just seems to take something away. The flake is very thick and hard to pack, which isn't too disconcerting..almost preferable due to the unique presentation. The tin aroma is distinctive and interesting--something of a yeast sort of smell.

With about ten ounces of the bulk ribbon cut version, 067, aging at two months, I probably wouldn't bother buying this again. If you're interested, the bulk has a more diverse taste and only seems to resemble the flake in that the two contain Perique. I'll have a hard time finishing this.

Funny how tastes change.

Another Virginia-Perique blend. This time C&D succeed in making a really quite, soft flake, in which the two tobaccos merge perfectly. It brings neither the power of the Escudo or Three Nuns, nor the great aroma of CAO Midnight Ride or Limerick, it keeps up the flavour rather than build it up throughout the bowl. A good all-day smoke for Perique lovers.

I don't know if someone with a sense of humor packed my tin or if it is suppossed to look like half chewed cigar butts. I had to dry this tobacco in an open Mason jar for about three days to dry it up enough to smoke. I will try this again later as my initial experience differed so greatly from my fellow reviewers but for now I have to buck the tide on this mixture.(Note: this review was originally posted under Bayou Morning instead of Bayou Morning Flake where it belongs.)

5/17/2005: Have to raise this one star to three. It has finally given up enough moisture to be nicely smoked. Nice tang and tasty Perique.

Very nice plain smoke and I like nice plain smokes. There is absolutely no bite and I smoke this tobacco after a day of virginias when the mouth and tongue are sore. BMF comes through every time. The perique lets its presence known from the first puff but it is not overwhelming. Try mixing BMF with Briar Fox (50/50). It's great. I call it Bayou Morning Fox.

Bayou Morning Flake IS different than the original Bayou Morning from C&D. The taste is very "peaty". It does not have the sweetnes of Bayou Morning and is not as complex. It burns very cool with NO bite. The flakes are unusually large and it seems a bit moist. I did let it dry for a few hours and enjoyed the smoke more. I really like this one. Recommended!

Addendum 02/10/05 -

With 3 months of aging the sweet notes remain through out the entire smoke - underscoring the cigar and pepper tones. The cigar like notes, the slight "oily" flavor, and the texture of the leaves once rubbed out points to some burley added into the blend, even if it is in very small measure.

With age the blend pulls away from similarities to 2015 and becomes closer to St. James Woods in subtle textures. In fact I believe overall I prefer this tobacco to the McClelland pressed VA/P offerings - though it is less smooth and more cigar like.

Do beware - the strength of the perique rivals Haddos Delight in intensity. For me, this is a nearly perfect VA/P pressed flake.

More than a Bayou Morning, I believe I sense a murky bayou night in this blend.

I've only smoked from a freshly opened tin with a few hours drying time, so this review will likely shift over the coming months. I've found the "freshly mixed" nature of the C+D blends offers a great opportunity to try a blend while young, and really get a sense of its maturation.

The dark mottled red and brown flakes are luxurious to break up and pack. That process releases a sweet and tangy aroma. The drying seems to get the cake to just the right texture and burning time. A little seems to go a long way, and a light pack is recommended.

Like many pressed VA/P blends I find that initially it seems a bit raw and flat in youth. I like strong perique but the intensity of the initial few puffs caught me off guard. Once the smoke settles in it evens out to a nice tobacco flavor with the perique heightening and waning in "pep". Someone described it as "peaty"...a perfect notation.

As far as room note, my significant other described it as smelling like "old arm pits". I think that about sums up the reaction it will usually engender in a closed house.

It is a completely different animal from the revered Bayou Morning (probably the blend I think of when going for VA/P).

More high marks for C+D. I look forward to tasting the blend after some maturity.

As a longtime fan of Virginia/perique blends, I find it difficult to find superlatives worthy of Bayou Morning Flake. I will sidestep an overly baroque encomium by stating that this is simply magnificent tobacco, an unassailable testament to the blending skill and consistent quality of Cornell & Diehl.

The flake is crumbly and, to me, perfectly moist. The visual and tactile pleasures this blend lends to the packing of my pipe give way upon lighting to one of the supreme smoking experiences a Virginia/perique lover like myself can have. BMF is strong on the perique, so be warned. The intensity builds down the bowl, so that by the last third one is in virtual perique nirvana. I never want it to end, but the bowl of my pipe is not bottomless, so what can I do? Oh, yes--grab another pipe and smoke another bowl.

Escudo, Three Nuns, Haddo's Delight--all superb testaments to the pleasures of Virginia and perique. To my estimation, however, they are mere aspirants to BMF's extraordinary quality and exquisite finish. In its category, this is the best there is.

I have been sticking to my old standbys lately and have not tried anything new to review. So I figured it was time to get moving.

I was just at the N. Cal. pipe show in Sacramento. A great time it was. If you are in the area next year, plan on attending.

At the show I tried some Bayou Morning Flake. I generally like VA/Perique blends, so long as the Perique is on the light side (too much and it gets my hayfever going). Appearance of this tobacco is thick yet short flakes. A fairly uniform medium brown in color.

A bit tough to light, which I assume is attributable to the thickness of the flake. Once burning, however, it is just fine and very comparable to most flakes. A nice VA flavor which is a bit on the strong side. Not spicy or tart like with a McClelland. Just good solid tobacco flavor. The perique is there to zip things up, but not overwhelming.

All in all a fine tobacco to try if you like stronger VA flakes.

Bayou Morning Flake arrived in a 2oz tin resplendent in the lively label art that I think of as a C&D trademark. Upon opening the can and removing the paper top cover I was greeted by a nice aroma of yeast and caramel. The flakes are presented in a rather chunky, agreeably homespun fashion, cut wide and somewhat broken.

I enjoy flake tobacco so much partly because of the ritual of preparation I indulge in, taking the time to rub out the tobacco, thus enjoying its texture, composition, and fragrance. I found this process difficult here, because the flakes were so thickly cut. I wound up with a lot of one ply pieces about 1/4 inch square that were hard to pack. I will just break it up in the future, without rubbing.

The tobacco took slowly to the match, but once under way released a satisfying rich caramel scented smoke supported by a cool slow burn rate.

It didn?t take long for the perique to dawn on this peaceful scene, beginning at about the second quarter of the bowl of the 1950s Wilke Dublin that did the initial honors. The perique stands in pretty stark contrast against the velvety dark flavor of the pressed virginia, presenting a sharp tangy effect and negating (sad to say) the once lush burnt sugar flavors and aroma. Yet, by the third quarter of the bowl, the taste of this whimsical tobacco had transformed into a powerhouse combination of pepper and blackstrap molasses, similar to the very end of a Dominican Cohiba. A smoky spicy treat!

This is my first foray into the realm of virginia/perique flake. I have not had the advantage of trying regular Bayou Morning, which is supposedly quite different. I am however, a chronic smoker of virginia flake, and would assert that this is equal to any (better than some) in flavor and smokeability, with the added joy that only perique can bring. I can?t help wondering, though, how the beautiful pressed virginia would be standing on its own.

Greets you with a delightful tin note of stale vomit and bad breath upon first opening, but thankfully this doesn't translate to the flavour when smoking. The smoke flavour is that of peppery hay, plums and brandy and almost an alcohol taste to it. The nicotine hit is like a punch to the gut, I was still feeling the aftereffects of it about 1-2 hours after smoking it the first time and I'm pretty experienced with nicotine. Not a blend to be taken lightly, treat it with respect. 1 star taken away for the vile tin note, I feel like I have to wash my hands after touching it.

A stout and smooth very satisfying blend ! Has a darkness about it and a nice oily tobacco that burns slow and cool but full flavored. There is No bite at all ! This one will keep you coming back if u like Virginia and heavier perique !! This might be my new favorite C &D - it has the richness of burley flakes with nicotine levels slightly higher than OJK. Fantastic !! The blend is deep and dark , slight pepper and a fermented darkness you only get from perique. It almost feels like a Latakia blend but there is none here! It’s unique and interesting. Definitely a good after dinner smoke or an evening armchair puff! This is a new favorite for me !

I purchased this blend after looking for some more intense Perique blends. The tin has notes of wet hay, yeast, and funky fermented flavors. A little barnyard as well. If you like complex sour beer and farmhouse ales, you’ll feel right at home. It came to me as a broken flake but others may find more intact flakes.

The broken flake made it easy to pack and the moisture was on the higher end of smokeable but I didn’t feel the need to dry it out. It smoked very well and dry, with few relights until the end of the bowl.

Bradley from Stuff and Things on YouTube described this as a “blunt instrument” of a VaPer and I tend to agree. The funky, spicy notes from the Perique are much more upfront than say Escudo, which are complimented by the sweet Red Virginias that fill out the blend with notes of stewed fruit. Normally a gentle, slow cadence is required to smoke more subtle VaPers but I found it difficult to get this blend to smoke harsh. I could puff fairly fast, and while it was a little hot, I got little in the way of tongue bite.

I get a substantial amount of nicotine from this blend, so puffing slow and on a full stomach benefits you more in that regard. The description of “the Nightcap of VaPers” is fitting so take your time if you’re sensitive to nicotine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this blend and I’ll be putting it into my rotation.

Tin note of fermented fruit, Rasin, and spices. The broken flakes are orangish-brown, dark brown and tan. Moisture is ok, may need a little drying. Rubs out with little effort. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of very bready, very spicy, very woody, tart dark stewed fruit, sweet grass, earthy, leathery, mild vinegar, mild tangy lemon, and a peppery retro. Virginias are leading with perique supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

This blend is a perique lovers dream. You get all the flavors from perique. That plum raisin chili pepper profile is upfront and the Virginia’s help mellow it out by adding a natural tobacco sweetness that breaks up the spice. I line this one a lot when I need a strong powerful favor. I don’t need to think as this is not a subtle blend just a lot of flavor.

There are VaPers out there, and lots of good ones. But this ? This is an alien. Telegraph Hill is an excellent VaPer, might even be the best, the « king » as some call it. Bayou Morning Flake pets Telegraph Hill’s head whispering « good boy ». Oh you can disagree … But still : I know.

For starters this blend is nothing like the ribbon cut version, it may be the same blend but it's completely different in flavor. These broken flakes are easy to work with, and a tad wet, but can be smoked immediately if you please.

I get some bread notes & a bit of hay, that's about it. Not very much sweetness at all. The perique doesn't seem to hit as hard as you'd think it would for being 25%. In fact I don't taste much perique at all. It's there, but I'm missing a lot of the normal plummy, peppery notes I usually get. I don't really enjoy this one until I hit the final 1/3 of the bowl. There the flavors finally develop and I get a bit of earth, stewed fruit, and pepper. Fortunately its easy to smoke, and doesn't bite whatsoever.

Overall underwhelming. Pretty one note Virginia flavor and not a great one at that. The ribbon cut variety is a whole lot more interesting, and cheaper. Planning on throwing it in a jar and if I get to it in a year or two I'll report back, I feel like with the large perique content may have massive aging potential, but as it stand right now, pretty bland.

I think I'm in love.

The tin art on this blend is pretty simple and fun and it's definitely something I would pick up based on design alone. When you open the tin you get a wonderful aroma of hay, baked bread, figgyness, some sort of matured cheese, with a background Virginia sweetness. There is a stack of fairly crumbling flakes in the tin that very easily rub out to your preference. I find no problem with lighting and keeping it lit. It takes an average amount of relights in that respect.

The taste is incredible. After lighting up I taste some beautiful dark fruits and plummyness from the Perique. It's spicy but not in any way overpowering. At 25% I wouldn't expect this kind of smoothness from Perique and maybe the process of making it a flake has something to do with that. The Virginias in this blend are Red, and they offer a lot of baked bread, softness, wood, and sweetness.

The taste is medium, it's not so complex that I can't do anything while smoking, but it's not too simple that I loose interest. The strength has the potential to be strong with the Perique content, but I find it a happy medium. The room note won't win any friends. I think in this I have found a new all day blend. I even went so far as to stock up my pipe humidor with 8oz of the stuff and I can't foresee that it will last long. I give this blend a solid 4 stars. It has everything I'm looking for in a Red Va VaPer: fruit, plum, bread and spice.

The great thing about the pipe tobacco world is that it is always changing, a blend that you like today you might not like tomorrow. This happens with this blend. Although not my favorite, I always give it a try. Taste changes maybe next time would be better for my taste.

Bringing out the flavour of a tobacco is kind of an art, especially with this one. The aroma from the thin is very nice, acid almost like fermented goldenberry. With the firsts puffs the greasy acid flavours emerge, later on some leather and bitter pepper.

Even though the name of this tobacco implies the taste of the morning, in my case it does not work well for this time of the day, but I enjoy it during the afternoon marinated with a cup of hot sweet cocoa which enriches the tasting experience.

I would hardly recommend a very slow smoke.

I had it in several pipes, briar, meerschaum, but it really worked well on a poker Missouri Meerschaum.

At this time still not one of my favourites, i really hope you like it though.
