First, you smokers of old camp fires and used leather goods, why do you buy something that claims to contain maple flavorings, sugar rum, vanilla,whisky, and citrus flavors, and promptly start whining that it is too sweet. Why are you spending your hard earned money buying tobacco that you don't like unless you simply want to bash.

On to the tobacco, it does not get ashy. I've went through two large tins, one older and one newer. It never happened. Next guess what? The tobacco was sweet, maybe very sweet. You know why? Maybe because it had maple flavorings, sugar, whisky, citrus flavors, rum and vanilla. It is exactly what it says it is. Now that that is resolved, lets review this tobacco based on what it is supposed to be. It's strength is somewhere between medium and strong. The older tin I had was somewhat milder than the newer tins. Also the nicotine was a little more than I expected from this tobacco. The room note was fine for me but I live alone. I could see how it might be too much of a good thing to some people. As far as taste goes, I like it. Guess what? It had a taste similar to sweet maple since it has in it maple, sugar, rum, vanilla,citrus flavors, and whisky. A fine tobacco which might be over the top for some tastes. If you like blow out taste and aroma, you will love it. It is what it says it is and is really good. 4 stars An aside, Wilke Maple is another maple flavored tobacco you might enjoy. Softer and some what more complex. Not better; just different. I enjoy them both.

Making a decent aromatic pipe tobacco is probably the easiest thing for a blender to do. Making a great one is probably the hardest. This one is probably as close to perfection as there is in an aromatic.

This came overly moist in my sampler bag but only required a 10 minute drying period. The bag aroma was wonderfully subdued. I did find the room aroma to be pleasant but it was a little more aromatic than I prefer. As for the flavor, it was delicate but pleasing. I tasted the aromatic agent, but I'm terrible at placing non-tobacco tastes in pipe tobacco. To me, it seemed more like butterscotch than maple, which was fine with me! I found myself wishing that the flavor was richer but that seems to be a tenet of good aromatics. The poor ones are usually the heaviest tasting while the best ones taste of tobacco along with the flavoring agent.

This burned cleanly with no heavy moisture, tasted like sweetened tobacco and did not offend those around me. It never turned sour or bitter down the bowl and it was a satisfying smoke. I'm not the world's most prolific aromatic smoker but I'd like to think I can recognize genius in a blend. For aromatics, this is it, folks. If you love aromatics, this one needs to be part of your next order. Take a huge bow, Craig Tarler! Few have accomplished what you have on this blend.

When I look at all the added flavorings, I see why I had a little trouble picking them out. There's so many that some crowd out the others. I thought the maple flavor was very tame between it being a light addition, and the number of aforementioned toppings that offer some competition. I got a few whiskey and rum notes, barely any vanilla, no citrus, and a light honey cavendish, and a little grassy, tangy dark fruit, tart citrus, woody earthy Virginia presence. Burns cool, clean and smooth with a fairly consistent taste. Barely leaves any moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Won't bite or get harsh. Has a very mild nic-hit. The strength is mild, while the taste is a couple of steps past that mark. Has a weak after taste, and not much of a room note. It's a decent starter semi-sweet aro for someone looking for a mild blend, but there are stronger maple mixtures if that's what you're looking for, though they may not give you a few of the flavors this one does.

I purchased sixteen ounces of bulk on this. It cellared for almost four full years. The initial tin note smoothed out from the intense maple aroma I remember when I jarred it. But upon opening it was still a rush of delicious maple syrup. Typical Cornell and Diehl quality in the blend and leaf. No garbage stems and such. Just nice smokable leaf. The taste and smell is so much like a church pancake breakfast. That's why I bought it.

I've read a lot of reviews complaining of a heavy ash taste. Intentionally I smoked this very fast and hot. It produced this result. My normal slow approach and several light tampings produce the same favorable results every other time.

It's interesting to read the extremely positive reviews of this blend. It makes me wonder if somehow I managed to end up with a bad tin, as what I received was rather dry, crumbly and somewhat harsh to smoke. Truthfully, the tin note smells like maple syrup slogged onto damp cardboard.

Once lit, I get decent mild tobacco flavor and yes, the room note is nice. No tricks here, the maple comes out as the primary top note flavor. The first portion of the bowl is enjoyable, but further down the flavor becomes papery and has a tendency to bitter.

Altogether Autumn Evening is an okay smoke. I do appreciate the effort that goes into producing it, especially considering the fact that Cornell & Diehl makes the Red Virginia Cavendish in house. However, this blend isn't for me.

(This review is from an aged bulk sample, so tins may vary to some degree - at least in moisture content and burnability)

Presentation is a dark, somewhat fine cube-cut. Jar note is overwhelmingly sweet and bursting with maple. The maple flavor is so intense as to make the blender's description almost comic ("delicate maple flavor").

That said, this is everything an aromatic should be, and everything the majority of aromatics are not. Takes a light from the beginning - no relights required. Burns well, and burns fast. But it's not overly hot. And burns surprisingly dry for such an obviously heavily flavored tobacco. Best of all, the flavor here, while not complex, is in fact maple. And delicious. With little to no heat. And no tongue bite or chemical taste. Amazing. I was most surprised by the lack of goop or dampness in the pipe after smoking this. It may have had to do with the drier, bulk tobacco. But I still expected some goop in the pipe. I would, however, have to assume that this would ghost a pipe and would be careful about smoking this blend in other than a pipe dedicated to aromatics.

Why more blenders can't seem to figure out how to make aromatics like this is beyond me. For the style, for what it is, absolutely four stars.

Warning: the maple flavor here is intense in the beginning. Almost overwhelming. Syrupy. If you don't like maple, skip this one.

I am writing this review as i am smoking this great offering from c&d. I just got this in the post today and was very excited to try it. Now i am a pure latakia junkie and really have no time for aromatics and tongue bite i usually get from them but boy was i surprised with this one. On with the review upon opening the tin i was hit with a very strong maple casing delicate it was not, i thought i was heading down a slippery road! Moisture was fine can do with a little airing out. I grabbed my meer and loaded it up first impressions was a sweet taste from the red va's but not sickly. I can't taste anything chemical at this point and my tongue is fine. Flavor is the same until half of the bowl and the room note very nice the wife was loving it and i was enjoying myself puffing away. And then it hit me pancakes and maple syrup thats what this stuff tastes like wow!!

After the second half all i could taste was a lovely pancake flavor and the sweetness now has died down but ever so gently in the background. Guys try this one out it really does deliver and great for a change of pace look its not complicated but it is what it is. I will be buying more of this just to liven things up. Well done C&d and thank you for this wonderful experience! I felt like a kid again and it brought back some wonderful memories.

Cornell & Diehl - Autumn Evening.

I posted a review on this blend a year ago, when I read it I vehemently disagreed, so since it's become part of my aromatic rotation I decided to delete it and re-post.

The tin-note is sweet, maybe caramel-like, with a touch of fruit. I wouldn't call it Coarse Cut, the pieces are very fine in build, and from a fresh tin the moisture's faultless.

I enjoy the smoking, like I find with the tin's aroma, the sweetness wins. This sweetness is a kind of an amalgamation of honey, sugar and maple, with a slight creaminess from the vanilla. I don't recognise any whisky or rum, sure, the rum may be adding molasses to the sweetness, but any alcohol piquancy is absent. The fruit/citrus present the same problem, I can't identify any! The tobacco note is defunct of any fresh or sharp Virginia traits, like with the added flavourings, the sweet side wins. Due to the delicate build of the tobacco, a long smoke relies upon the bowl being fairly well packed, loose packing makes it burn too fast. It gives a cool, independent burn, with bite-free smoke.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: great.

Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening: a wonderful aromatic. Highly recommended:

Imagine walking into an IHOP at 3 AM and being seated in the smoking section. There's nobody else around, but a heavy odor of stale tobacco lingers in the air as you tuck into a Pancake Platter. If this is your idea of paradise, then Autumn Evening is the blend for you.

The quest for a good aromatic continues -- I still haven't found anything to beat Pipeworks & Wilke. Autumn Evening is perfectly good tobacco, no nasty PG or anything like that, and it's smooth as butter. But I found it nauseating. There's a certain indefinable unpleasantness to it, deriving perhaps from the slightly cloying sweetness plus the Log Cabin flavoring (I love maple syrup and maple sugar candy, having grown up in New England, but this taste is more reminiscent of maple- flavored breakfast cereal). Two stars for the basic quality of the leaf, but think twice about buying this stuff if, like me, you're an English/Balkan guy looking for something you can smoke around the house.

While not a terribly complex tobacco, this is about as good a commonly available aromatic gets. The first time my wife smelled this as I was smoking it, she said, "ooh, what is THAT?". Add to that the fact that this is one of the best sellers at the B&M my wife and I own, and I'd say it's a real crowd-pleaser, both with smokers and those around them. We have plenty of customers who come back for repeat purchases of this, which is really no surprise. I have a pretty large selection of pipe leaf from which to choose, and often find myself reaching for this when I either can't make up my mind what I want to smoke, or I just want something reliable and tasty. I also haven't noticed any serious ghosting, like some aromatics can cause, although I keep my pipes very clean and rotate among around 4 dozen or so cheap to mid-range pipes. I generally recommend that someone trying a new tobacco give a blend a test-run in a cob pipe first, but I don't have such a worry about this blend. If I could, I'd give this 3.5 stars.

While waiting upon the full review promised above, I thought I'd go ahead and share my own impressions of Autumn evening. Bland, mild, no nocotine kick. I do think I detected some sort of flavoring - although Maple would not have been my first guess. A real winner for light aromatic fans.

Cornell and Diehl, an outstanding blender of boutique tobaccos, has a winner in Autumn Evening, and this pipe mixture racks up big sales for them. For those who puff aromatic pipe tobaccos exclusively or mostly, and for those who use aromatics as a change of pace, the chances are that Autumn Evening will tickle their fancy. The minority of pipe smokers who absolutely do not care for aromatic offerings need not sample this offering.

Open the tin (it is also available in bulk) and you will be greeted by coarse cut, short chopped ribbons of some girth, and some bits that are close to being cubes.

The tin aroma seems predominantly maple. This pancake smell is slightly deceiving, for Autumn Evening in fact has a complex blend of casing agents, which includes (aside from the maple) rum, whiskey, fruit, citrus and vanilla.

The moisture content open first opening is a bit high; this tobacco improves with some drying time. Lighting is not difficult, and I generally get by with a single relight. Surprise, surprise! Once lit, Autumn Evening is an aromatic tobacco that actually tastes the same way that it smells. Do the aromatic agents completely overcome the citrus note of the base Virginias? "Purt' nigh but not plumb."

The great majority of bystanders will approve of the room note, sweet and fragrant,but not overbearing.

The pipe load smokes down to a dark grey ash with less goop that you would expect from a tobacco as aromatic as this. In fact, if you puff very gently, the goop is surprisingly scant. Autumn Evening contains both cavendish and Virginia, and I take it that the cavendish treated element is also Virginia. The nicotine content registers on the minimal side of the scale. Virginia dominant tobaccos create a tongue bite challenge for smokers with sensitive tongues. If you are one of these, a filter pipe will help.

As this tobacco can ghost a briar, enjoy it with pipes dedicated to aromatics, or use it in a Missouri Meerschaum. I personally find that the maple dominant flavor really shines in a cob.

Automn Evening is, simply put, a remarkable maple cased tobacco! The tin note was incredible, as if I had smelled an actual can of maple syrup. The tobacco is a dark brown Ribbon-Cut which is really small in length. Being 8 months old, the tin offers a slightly on the dry side tobacco that is perfect for immediate packing without any wait. It is wonderfully easy to pack my pipes and the small Ribbon-Cut is a charm to light up. The taste of the casing comes to me as a genuine maple extract. I cannot make out the other casings supposedly in there and, honestly, I don't care for them. The maple stands on its own and is just wonderful. Automn Evening is not complex at all. It will not develop a myriad of flavours. The Virginias used for this mixture are strangely similar in behavior than a Burley would be. It starts with the maple casing which slowly attenuates to make room for some tobacco taste once past mid-bowl, but retaining a bit of the maple flavour. It burns very easily and I have not experienced tongue bite once. The nicotine strength is mild to medium, pretty much right in between. I will be buying more. I am always seeking a top of the notch aromatic and have found very few over the last almost thirty years I have been smoking a pipe. Well, let me tell you this is one of the very few. I understand why this is C & D's top aromatic seller!

Tastes just like it smells in the can - maple syrup.

I don't love many aromatics but I do love this one. A rich, sweet, smooth tobacco with not a trace of harshness or bite. Has a great smell for bystanders and a cool illustration on the label.

If this is indicitive of the quality of the rest of C&D's tobaccos, I will be smoking them a lot.

As I don't live in the Land of the Free I have had to order this (and others) over the internet from US based tobacconists. All of the companies I've dealt with have been very reasonably priced and quick to dispatch the packages. I've kept the orders small (200-300 grams total weight of tobacco in sealed tins) and had no problems with UK customs.

I’m an equal opportunity smoker, but aromatics are probably my least visited pipe tobacco genre. I’ve been disappointed too many times by great smelling tobacco that turns into a bitter steamy mess once lit. Autumn evening is one of the few aromatics that passed the test of combustion.

The tin note is awesome. Sweet maple syrup, with a touch of vanilla. There’s a hint of bourbon as well, which adds an “adult” component to an otherwise “kids cereal” aroma.

This cavindish is unlike any I’ve smoked before. Reddish color, not sticky or oily feeling. The thin ribbons pack easily without worry of over-compressing like most aromatics.

The smoke is very mild, with a light cinnamon vanilla flavor. The maple is heavy in the room note. The pipe burns well, very little moisture or dottle left over, but definitely a ghost in the pipe.

If you like natural tobacco flavor, you won’t find it here. If you want a quality aromatic, this is hard to beat. Not something I would smoke often, but it’s one of the best in its class.

I bought and tried this blend prior to 2010. My tastes have changed since then, but here is what I remember:

Tin note: "My Dear, are you making pancakes for dinner?" Big on the Maple. Zero tobacco essence.

Room note: "Honey? I'm making chicken for dinner. Are you eating pancakes in the living room?" Burning syrup.

Smoking: "yummy! Wow maple!" That was the first half of each bowl I tried. The second: "Dear God, why I am sucking ash up the stem?"

Summary: smells great, tastes great for the first 10-15 puffs, then hot air and disappointment. Unless you are a syrup junkie, give it a pass. 1 1/2 stars. (Will rate 2 just for tin/ room notes.)

This is my first review on Tobaccoreviews.com or any pipe tobacco site for that matter. This is also my first aromatic from C&D, yet I am a huge fan of their other tobaccos. Autumn Evening is the first aromatic that I have experienced that is not "goopy" or wet with some sort of humectant and can be smoked straight from the freshly opened tin. I quite enjoyed these properties.

The tin note smells like warm maple syrup. The reason that I added the word "warm" is the maple smell is very forward. I loaded my brand new "Bones" bent billiard from Morgan Pipes with Autumn Evening and mouth some fire to it. This blend was rather receptive to the flame and only needed additional ignition twice after the initial light. The taste of the smoke aligns well with the tin note. My study smelled like the hot maple and brown sugar oatmeal with extra maple syrup that I frequently have for breakfast.

My tongue seems to be a bit sensitive to bite on occasion, however this blend did not offer to irritate my palate. Autumn Evening also made my mustache smell of maple syrup which my wife liked much more than some of the other blend that I smoke.

Stay smoky my friends....

Excellent. If you are looking for a good solid Aromatic this is a good one. It's billed as Red Va Cav but reminds me of soft burley. Pleasant smell and smoke. I get more out of it than Maple. I got the Vanilla and taste of a sweet whisky. I can see why this is a best seller for C&D.

Recommended for an all day smoke or special time to relax on the porch after a meal.

Smells like maple syrup. Pleasant enough Virginia base but the diacetyl butter flavouring has a sickly smell to me. Like some people I have the same response to microwave popcorn. If that smell is agreeable to you, then knock yourself out.

I received a 1 ounce sample of this with a recent purchase of a Peterson pipe and some favorite tinned tobaccos from Smokingpipes.com. I have read reviews on this but never had the desire to try some, so this sample was a way for me to do so. The small sample had a very maple/buttery smell from the zip lock bag which was very enticing. Its appearance was mostly a darker brown with some black and came as a riff cut to my eyes. Loading and lighting was easy and the maple flavoring was very nice. I did not, however, find this flavoring to be so over the top as many previous reviewers have noted and complained about. For me it was never that strong and although present, always remained in the background. It did have a tendency to nip at the tongue a bit, even with slow puffing. I found the pronounced taste of PG in the mix - not much, but enough to be off-putting for me. It maintained its flavor profile for the most part, but by the lower third it became ashy. It smoked harsh on the throat for me and it did have a fairly noticeable nic presence. The room note was that of cigarettes and tolerable at best. I appreciated the sample, and although not a bad tobacco, not one suited for my personal tastes which would rate 3 stars; however, my personal rating is 2 stars.

What an unexpected disappointment for me! I found the maple casing extremely cloying - to the point of being nauseating. And that was not the only negative ...

One day I was enjoying a bowlful in my private library when a non-smoking colleague (who loves the smell of most aromatic pipe tobaccos) peeked inside and asked in an alarming tone, "Have you started smoking cigarettes again?" Autumn Evening has been the only aromatic tobacco to have ever triggered this reaction - and I have smoked dozens of different aromatics.

My experience leaves me with no choice but to agree with another reviewer that the room note is of pancakes and stale cigarette smoke. The concept reminds me of covering up pre-existing body odour with strong deodorant. It makes distinguished noses reel.

Interestingly, many smokers and ex-smokers find the room note pleasant. I suspect they are not sensitive to the smell of cigarette type smoke and observe mainly the strong maple aroma. I have had no such luck with non-smokers.

The cloying casing and vulgar room note push me in the direction of a one star rating but I'll add another star for the good quality tobacco leaf used.

This somewhat harsh review is not meant to put fellow pipers off this popular blend. I have merely attempted to succinctly describe my personal experience. By all means try Autumn Evening for yourself, if you haven't already. Your mileage may vary.

Cornell & Diehl - Autumn Evening

Well.  Clearly a blend like this won't be for everyone, but I'd like to share a couple what I feel are keys to doing this blend.  A little background: I've bought this both in tin and bulk formats over several years, and I smoke it in a smaller straight long stemmed Grabow acorn that's dedicated to maple aromatics, no idea how it would perform in a larger bowl.

Key 1 - pay heed to your cadence.  No need for super close attention, but if you go at it too hard obviously it will get hot.  It probably won't bite but it will start to taste ashy.  You'll get the best flavor keeping it cool.

Key 2 - unlike most aros this is virginia based rather than black cavendish based.  The virginia has been cavendished to remove bite potential.  But, the virginia hasn't been rendered a tasteless vehicle for artificial flavor delivery, so you'll taste tobacco too.

The flavor as I'd describe it is mainly maple, with chocolate and vanilla.  I don't really catch the others.  The room note as I see it is a pleasant maple - vanilla, but also can have something of a slight cigarette type note, still an overall pleasant scent. I was once told it smells like a vanilla cupcake...this instance was outdoors.

Key 3 - buying in the tin, you may find the flavoring overwhelming for the first week or so after cracking a fresh tin.  The flavoring will start to mellow out after a couple weeks, even if you jar it.

Not the goopy, glycol laden mess a lot of aros typically are.  Glycol free, made with quality tobacco that has tobacco taste and a little bit of kick.  One of the more quality aromatics available today.

In my quest for high quality aromatic blends, I decided to try C&D's No.1 seller. I am glad I did. The initial aroma is strong with maple flavor but that did not transfer to an overly sweet experience. The dark brown coarse cut packed easily and lighting was effortless. I enjoyed this tobacco right after breakfast with a cup of coffee and it was delightful. High quality tobacco will always stand out even when the casing appears it is going to be overwhelming. I love Virginia tobacco and this did not disappoint. Cool burning with no bite, it can be smoked all day with great real tobacco taste unmasked by hints of maple walnut. No dottle or goop in the heel when finished. Give it a try.

The description I found indicates that this tobacco "actually tastes the same as it smells". As a new pipe smoker, this was a huge draw. This is the first tobacco for me that actually lives up to that standard. I will most certainly be ordering more and if you like aromatics, I heartily encourage you to do the same.

As for defining the flavor, I leave that to those with more refined palates than mine. All I can say is I found the maple enjoyable, and the flavor itself conjured a cool "Autumn Evening" even though it was smoked in late July.

This tobacco is of medium flavor and smokes easily with no unpleasant after effects. It undoubtedly has and will provide many more relaxing autumn evenings for smokers. The low star rating is based only on subjective preferences and should not discourage anyone who is so inclined towards the flavors associated with the "hotcakes" served at McD's (or the like) from smoking CD's AE. To its credit the flavor of the smoke is consistent with the pouch aroma which smells overwhelmingly of margarine. Perhaps this is what is advertised and understood to be the vanilla flavor, in which case it is of the artificial variety. Again, the smell and flavor are consistent, so if you have a chance you will want to take a whiff of the tobacco before purchasing. Mine was a free sample as part of a pipe and accessories purchase and it is not a flavor I would have chosen on my own. Very subjective of course, but AE was not too sweet or too much nicotine for me, prefer more of both, the artificial margarine (vanilla?) flavor is what was disagreeable. There are tobaccos that I don't care for but still return to from time to time but this particular CD offering will not receive any future invitations.

Autumn Evening is a sweet smelling aromatic from C&D. The pouch scent is that of maple syrup. After some needed dry time, it packed with ease and smoked with ease. The maple scent doesn't translate well to the smoke as the taste is sweet, rather than maple in flavor. The good news for me is that red Virginias generally don't like me, but I had no problem with AE. When I want a Maple aromatic, I prefer Vermont Maple Cavendish from Pipeworks and Wilke, but still worth a try for lovers of maple aromatics.

Maybe it's the red Virginias that make this blend a winner but C&D's Autumn Evening is a great aromatic. Smell is outstanding, no bite, and wonderful, wonderful room note. Easily a top aromatic for me.

UPDATED...again 12/17: I watched an interesting video on youtube where a youtube blogger visited the C&D factory and inteviewed the owner and blender of Autumn Evening. They described AE to be the most difficult and time consuming of all the blends they make for C&D and all private label blends due to the flavoring process. This is not a casing by any traditional sense. As they describe it is an infusion where the "sauce" is actually soaked into the tobacco and not applied by traditional process. The tobacco actually absorbs all of the flavoring in the soaking and then requires some significant drying to get it to the packaging phase. I found this informative and interesting. It may also help in understanding the concentration of flavor and sweetness in this tobacco. And now you know...

This is the poster child for a solid aromatic. Cool smoking subtle flavors of maple syrup and vanilla bean and the clean Virginia's coming through. Tobacco and casing in a perfect marriage. The maple flavor is front and center with a grassy nutty Virginia in the background. I read pancakes a few times in reviews but I'd say french toast (mom always added vanilla extract to the french toast in my house). Room note is fantastic, like IHOP at 2 in the morning on a Friday night. If I had to have one aromatic, this might be it.

Update: The above review was probably due to the transitional period I was in from aro's and non aro's to almost exclusively non aro's these days. I have gone back and smoked this a few times and find it rather one dimensional and it has a tendency to bite. I still enjoy the pancake flavor it provides but I have noticed with age that taste has faded. Still a nice aro if you are looking for a sweet breakfast smoke with a cup of coffee.

Great name. Great label. Great marketing. It ends there for me though.

There are a number of people who obviously love this blend, and I should note that I do enjoy a high quality aromatic, I am a lover of the autumn, and I enjoy maple syrup.

The problem for me is that this is not maple syrup in flavour; it's butterscotch, and there's a world of difference between the two. You can love the one and hate the other. The tin note is butterscotch and whatever flavour it might impart, maple is not the association I am particularly left with. (Nor do I have any sense of any citrus or alcohol flavourings.)

The biggest issue for me is that what this does remind me of, flavour wise, is a bitter, walnut shell kind of taste, with occasional, slight hints of butterscotch. I relish neither flavour. The bitterness is likely the chemical nature of the topping and it is there right from the beginning of the bowl and does not go away.

If I want an aromatic, I enjoy Cult Blood Red Moon's sour cherry flavour, or the chocolately flavour of Lane 1 Q, but for all its marketing appeal to me, I cannot imagine myself ever reaching for this tin other than to give it away. Shame. The idea seemed so promising to me.

I had been fascinated by the reviews of this blend so far; my last experience with a maple-flavoured blend had been far less than satisfying, but being a friend of maple syrup as such, I was willing to give it another try as a topping.

Opening the tin reminded me of first opening a bottle of vintage Canadian maple syrup I got as a gift; the aroma that greeted me was very much alike -- and much unlike the maybe most famous maple-flavoured blend in the world.

The leaf is somewhat dry compared to what I am used to, but that is OK, it fills and lights easily with a single char and then keeps burning gently down to the very end. The cut is rather thin and short, so this 'baccy works well even in small bowls; I have been smoking it in corn cobs a lot, and it works great with those.

Not having the strength I am used to from the other C&D offerings I have had the pleasure to try thus far, this still is is top notch leaf; the flavour lasts throughout the bowl, the room note is beautiful, and once again the only detracting factor is the high price of this beauty in Europe.

Recommended for the aromatics afficionados and those seeking something different; highly recommended to all those who still think Rum&Maple is tobacco so they can actually taste some. And I find that for once, C&D have captured the feeling of the tobacco experience in its name.

The initial smell of the tin is almost intoxicating. The smell of maple syrup overtakes all others, including the tobacco smell. However the aroma doesn't do well to translate into flavor. The tobacco itself has a tendency to burn hot and only slightly uneven. It's great to smoke around others though.

I wanted to like this one so badly. The idea of a tasty Virginia that pleases the crowd is a win/win, right? There are so many positive qualities that I have discovered in this blend, and very few negative ones. The Red Virginia cavendish is the same base for Kajun Kake, but it behaves much differently and is milder in strength here. There are some nice bread like toasty notes that are pleasing. This blend is neither sticky to the touch nor goopy in the heel. It smokes surprisingly dry for the number of toppings applied. Certainly no PG here though. Given that a singular leaf is used, the depth of the tobacco flavor is not there. It is fairly one dimensional. The toppings and casing do not overwhelm the tobacco and is a nice balanced enhancement. Mild nuances of vanilla and maple are evident in the sidestream and room note. At the end of the day this is not for me, but given it’s status as C&Ds number one seller, all should give this a chance. Again, I reiterate, there was nothing objectionable about this tobacco at all, it just won’t find its way into my rotation.

I can see why people enjoy this blend, but I didn't like it at all. The maple comes through and definitely takes a front-row, center seat in this blend. To my tastes, this blend tasted like smoking the morning's forgotten pancake.

This bowl dried out my mouth and I thought the tobacco under the maple syrup was harsh and dry. I definitely like this tobacco in the jar rather than out. One of the few blends I didn't get through the bowl.

2022-08-20 Update: I kept this jar in the back of my cellar, and I just pulled it out and put it in a cob. The three years on this blend did nothing to add any complexity to the blend, but it did mellow out the maple syrup. It was more enjoyable than the first time I tried it, but I still did not enjoy it. Maybe I moved from 1/2 star to 1 1/2 star.

I am satisfied that I have given this blend its second shot, and I'll be passing this on and making room in my cellar.

When I first started piping,over forty years ago,tobacco offerings were somewhat frugal in England,which led me to Condor,St.Bruno or Clan.The first two left me dizzy,for want of a better description.Therefore,for many a year,it was the Clan that saw me through my early pipe years. Having tried it again last year,I cannot,for the love of Mike,comprehend how I survived.Take it or leave it,better the devil etc. So to Autumn evening,yes ,like Clan,an aromatic,but served up with a maple syrup pie,Alas not much like Dundee cake or Highland shortbread,yum....much more akin to Old Spice than Armani on the nose. Having purchased a large tin ...Why,God,Why! from the States and got clobbered with the tax..Grrrr! I gradually discovered that most,but not all,mass produced American blends are reminiscent of that unholy Clan offering.The maple casing is a bit like Raspberry Vodka.Who needs it.Not me taken in by it any more.Give me solid unpretentious fare like Germain , Gawith or Perretti any time,especially if you want a smoke lasting longer than it takes for the match to extinguish .Whoosh,If you get my drift,C and D. Based on the reviews, I'm wondering if I got a bad batch.

Aroma in the tin is delicious. Warm, rich, maple tones with maybe a splash of chocolate.

Not sure how this is classified as a "coarse cut." It was cut so fine, it was reminiscent of opening a can of Copenhagen. The tobacco felt great between the fingers--light and silky.

That's where the good ends.

Stuff lights easy. Burns like paper in a brush fire. A bowl lasted like 10-15 minutes. Taste is sort of like maple at first, but then burns so fast, it tasted like a generic cigarette. Room notes are ok.

Not sure if there's better batches out there, but based on this one, I was very disappointed.

Maple and vanilla is what I get from this blend. I like it, I couldn't tell you what the underlying flavors are because it is a very sweet smoke-all aromatic with very little tobacco. But sometimes that is exactly what I want. A nice change of pace from vanilla Cavendish and perfect on an autumn evening on the porch. I bought 8 oz and popped it in a mason jar to save until next fall, hopefully it ages well!

This is one of my favorite aromatics out there the true maple is amazing. I was introduced to this blend 8 years ago and still remains top of the list. I was excited to try this 4oz sample I bought after all the 4 star reviews. I am a huge Cornell & Diehl fan, so I thought this would be another home run.

There are many excellent reviews already so I will be brief. As far as aromatics this is 3 stars, many offerings from other companies are better. As far as tobacco taste this is 4 stars, but the topping is a bit too much for the quality of tobacco they use. I would rather they use less topping and allow the quality of the tobacco to speak for itself.

The 4 star qualities of this tobacco are many however, this is a great starter tobacco for friends of mine and the room note is pleasant enough to smoke at my favorite pubs/bars. I have a hard time smoking other Cornell & Diehl offerings at the bar due to their unadulterated nature. Definitely worth a try, you will enjoy this tobacco regardless of where you lie on the experience scale.

This was my first venture into Cornell & Diehl tobaccos and probably the last one.

JESUS CHRIST! Could you flavor tobacco any more than this?!? You are literally smoking maple syrup! Ghosted my pipe, ghosted my mouth - for days after I was tasting maple syrup.

The flavoring is waaaay over the top. If they were to use 1/10th of the topping - it would've been a very pleasant smoke. Until then - you are better off just drinking some maple syrup instead.

I really wanted to try some of the other C&D tobaccos, but I am way to gun-shy now.

I love this stuff, sometimes I just like to open the jar and smell it and then smoke something else. I think it is one of the better aromatics out there. I have to exhale through my nose in order to taste it at times, but it is spectacular when I haven't been smoking much, this way I can really catch the flavor. This blend for me will always bring back memories of smoking in my college apartment during the fall with the sliding glass door open! It intermingles so well with those fall smells of leaves, smoke coming from peoples chimneys in the air, and of coarse pumpkin spice candles that some girl brought into the bachelor pad, haha! It is quite the mild blend and the toping is not to wet which I like, unfortunately it doesn't smoke quite as good as it smells, but it is tasty none the less!

Had to change my rating because, C&D has significantly altered the quality of the product, it is no longer worth smoking IMO, tastes like cigarettes.

Don't let be fooled, this is a classy aromatic tobacco, which is not cloying or disgusting. The aroma is that of maple syrup, but this tobacco has also a great base made of Red Virginias which are dominant throughout the smoke. The aroma is for sure one that your wife/girl will enjoy. Nicotine-wise, this is not a light tobacco, I'd say it sits in the medium spot. Tin art superb as usual. I highly recommend it for those who want to try a top-notch aromatic tobacco.

Excellent example of a seasonal blend for me, only smoke it in the Fall. Quality blend of tobaccos with flavoring that combines everything from candy corn to Carmel apples. Not a bite in a bowl full. Consistent flavor of the tobacco and toppings throughout the smoke. Not goopy and sloppy like some blends of a similar nature. Can see why C&D sells a lot of this. Solid 3 for me!

A quality aromatic pipe tobacco that is straightforward. Smells strongly of sweet maple syrup. Taste is of a sweet, tangy, fresh baked bread virginia with almost no earth and a dash vanilla. Aroma is very pleasant maple with some tobacco. The mention of this reminding people of a smoky diner is funny because its true, be it a good or bad thing is up to you. The maple and slight breadiness of the virgina give you a sense of pancakes, but the pure virginia aspect brings the cigarette like nature to the party.

Bought in bulk, the ribbon cut packs well and humectants used perfectly as this was not dry nor sopping wet. Takes light and keeps pretty well, and burns at a moderate pace for a VA. Leaves some residue but nothing crazy.

Overall it is a quality aromatic with straight virginia. Not much complexity or depth because of that but I find it to be enjoyable as a VA/Per smoker and a good change of pace.

With all the hype, my expectations were high. I’ve been disappointed with most of Cornell & Diehl’s products lately, and this unfortunately continues the theme.

It smells fantastic when you open the tin, but that’s the best thing I can say about this. I don’t know if I got a dud tin, but I thought I was looking at the contents of a can of dip it was so finely cut and chopped. I’m not talking about just a fine shag, the cut is extremely fine and short. The entire contents of the tin are this way. Perhaps this is intentional, but it conveys a “what do we do with all these scraps?”-style presentation. In any case, I think this type of cut, any kind of shag cut when it comes to pipe tobacco, provides for a hot, fast and muddled smoking experience.

That delicious tin note does not translate to the smoke. It’s just a mildly sweet and mostly bland flavor.

More and more, I’m beginning to view Cornell & Diehl as the OTC blender of the premium tobacco realm. I’m glad they have as many fans as they do, and there are still a few Pease blends that I think they’re getting right, but the switch to the finer ribbon cut for many of their blends in the last couple years has been detrimental to their quality.

As it stands, I tried a few bowls of this over the course of a few days and threw it in the trash.

Oh, and the above picture of the tin and the accompanying tobacco is clearly from the pre-2016 era, before C&D switched to the ultra fine shag cut. I’m now of the opinion that most reviews of C&D produced blends pre-2016 have been rendered essentially useless, as most of their blends now feature a shag cut, and seemingly different leaf in many cases, and therefore bear little resemblance to what they once were.

When I opened the can it smelt like a short stack from I-HOP dripping in maple syrup. Almost too sweet smelling but fortunately it smokes a lot milder than it smells. To me this is another more natural aromatic that I have tried and I really enjoyed it. A little spicy at times and taste was consistent until the end. Defiantly a nice smoke for the evenings this time of the year hence its name.

Upon buying this tobacco, I was very pleased with the tin note. Very pleasant maple/bourbon note is present. However, once I actually loaded this up and smoked it, it became apparent to me that this blend is a very bland and stale cigarette taste. It burns extremely hot, and like most aromatics (cheaper ones) instead of the last 1/3 of the bowl being an ashy taste/aroma, the whole smoke was that way for me. I threw my tin away. I wasn’t impressed.

An aromatic done right. The casing (maple syrup) melds well with the Red Virginia Cavendish and produces a smooth yet flavorful smoke.

That said, my first impression of the blend was that it was a bit too mild for my palate and it arrived a little too wet. However, the more that I have smoked the blend, the more I have enjoyed the delicate subtleties of the casing mixed with the Virginia tobacco.

Edited on 21 Nov 2018 After smoking this blend for a four months, I realized that this blend was turning my stomach. I originally thought it was some nicotine poisoning, but my body definitely does not like something in the topping. After four similar experiences, I dumped the rest of the tin, which deeply saddened me. I moved on to Cult's Militia for a similar maple aromatic blend. I will leave the recommendation at three stars, because I believe my body chemistry is the issue.

Very pleasant mild all day aromatic. The mild maple sweetness carries through from opening the tin to the last puff. One of the few tobaccos my wife doesn't mind.

Girls like folding chairs, they like extendable tables. Perhaps I've got too much testosterone, but I like one thing that does well what it's supposed to do.

What I'm getting at is that Autumn Evening is girlie. It's like smoking butterscotch. I want to fill my pipe with baccy and eat butterscotch. I don't want something that is both.

It's saving grace is that it's very very easy to smoke and it's over very very quickly.

C&D produced a quality aromatic with Autumn Evening. As I understand, this is a blend that takes significant time for them to make.

As others have stated, this can be wet out of the tin and can stand drying out. However, if you choose to smoke it right away, do yourself a favor and pack it just a little more loose than you would normally.

If you tend to freight train your smoke, this blend will run hot and bite. If you sip it right on the edge of going out, the flavor pallet is amazing. I can taste the sweetness of the red Virginia cavendish on the initial draw, then the maple blossoms. Not a sticky maple syrup, but a nice buttery maple that leaves a wonderful room note.

All that said, I don't know if maple is what I could smoke all day, but this blend certainly makes for a magnificent digestif.

This blend seems to have it all. A tasty aromatic with rich flavors, yet there remains a complex mature and full tobacco flavor . Notes of citrus, rum, maple, and a number of delights float through this blend.

Even though I am pretty indifferent to maple, I still looked forward to trying this because the red Virginia cavendish in Kajun Kake is so delicious.

What a disappointment! While some of that amazing flavor from the cavendished reds can be drawn from it with some effort and a little more draw than usual towards the last third of the bowl, it is mostly drowned out by the blast of added flavorings. Furthermore, unlike in the Kajun Kake, it tasted ashy, did not burn clean and left a bitter aftertaste.

As for the maple flavor, it is cheap-artifical and strong. Maybe I could put up with that, but what made it disgusting is the artificial margarine flavor that no amount of airing or drying could get rid of. At its best Autumn Evening might taste something like gritty mulitgrain pancakes, covered in cheap margarine, maple syrup, and some preserves. At its worst, which is most of the time, it's a margarine-and-maple-flavored abomination the smell of which permeates clothing, hair, beard, pipe, mouth and environs long after smoking is done. The best I can say for it is that the smell from smoking it on a work break motivated my boss to go out to the local diner and treat me to brunch, but I had to put up with her going on about pancakes, her favorite food growing up, etc.

No nic kick either.

For me, no thanks, good evening, and never again to this one.

Summary: As flavored tobacco blends go, this is one of the better ones. Taste like Maple and butterscotch.

Most of us who dislike aromatic tobacco blends should direct our ire at its actual target, which is flavorings. Flavorings themselves miss the point: the give you a tiny symbol of the experience, without all the supporting actors and background, which creates a disembodied, unfulfilling experience. It's like television commercials or Fleshlights, an obvious substitute for the real thing, and a reflection of our desire to control our world more than what it is. For that reason, just like most people like democracy, watery beer, fast food sugar-burgers and soft drinks, most people like aros. This is one of the better ones with moderate tobacco quality, a good cut, and minimal bite, but it still grosses me out. Sorry.

Boring boring boring...zzzz. I had great hopes for this tobacco. I love a good maple pipe tobacco. This one isn't "bad" but it sure isn't good either. The more I try to remember the experience the less I like it. It was very moist and I had difficulty getting a nice puff of smoke from it. A good Virginia can be nice with low levels of smoke but with this one I kept puffing harder and harder trying to get some flavor. I probably would have cheered if I got tongue bite. I have eliminated most carbs and all sugar and salt from my diet and my taste buds are amazing right now. Strange that I couldn't find any real flavor in this tobacco. I tried it 4 different days in 2 different pipes. I bought 4 ounces of this and don't know what I'll do with the other 3.5oz of it.

I have found this one to be a great tin to have in the collection, partly becauSe I like it and partly because it seems to "keep" much longer than some, and partly because I love the tin art. The description says "........cased with a delicate maple flavor". I'm not sure it is very delicate or subtle but it is definitely a warm and attractive aroma that follows through consistently into the smoke. Very enjoyable!

I'm curious as to the name C&D chose for this. Where I live in the U.S., maple syrup is made in February and March, not autumn- the maple syrup is long gone by then at my house. Autumn around here is when the air smells like latakia from the fireplaces and burning leaves.

I happily accepted a free sample of this, being a big fan of the version made at Pipeworks & Wilke. It rather came as a shock that I didn't much like it all that much, even using my dedicated maple pipe, a clay and a new cob. I've been puffing P&W's so long, I suspect that anything different would be off-putting, so don't take this as a condemnation.

The plastic pouch smell does not strike me as maple so much as brown sugar, and when first received I really disliked it. After a month, the topping calmed down to more approachable levels. It's difficult to comment on moisture levels because mine came from bulk, but it lit right up and seems free of glycol. The taste is mild, as expected, barely tasting of tobacco at all until the second half of the bowl. Nicotine seems non-existent. Neither particularly intensify throughout the bowl; the maple (and rum?) as expected, taper off in the bottom half.

She-who-must-be-considered really likes the aroma. When asked, I think she identified the basis of my dissatisfaction: "it smells like vanilla and a campfire burning maple logs." Aha! Not pancakes. This has more of a woody taste and smell. Although still sweet, it is not so much so in flavor. I can see how people might prefer one over the other. If you tried either one and disliked it, try the other.

A cob seems the best venue for this blend, both for taste and character.

I'll still give it three stars for smokers of aromatics, and of course zero for the latakia-only crowd. Me, I prefer the pancakes version of P&W.

I received a sample of Autumn Evening included in an order. I liked the smell and tried it with no preconceptions. I was stunned. I have a problem with tongue bite from some Virginias, but I get only the mildest tingle from Autumn Evening. I have smoked it a bit wet and need to dry it a bit more, but, even wet, it burns to fine ash. The flavor is mild with just a hint of a spicier note. I was so impressed that I ordered a large container.

It could easily become my go-to tobacco. I look forward to drier smokes and a bit of aging.

Now thats maple, i have smoked maple street by sutllif, latham circle by hearth and home and maple gold by C&D and found all of them to be lacking in maple flavoring. The only other blend i have smoked with similar flavor intensity was rum and maple by sutliff tobacco galleria line and that blend although being decent in price and a bit more mellow, have the tendency to loose its maple beyond half the bowl. Autumn evening however maintain what it have to offer throughout the bowl even if not in the same power. Its a virginia so sip it and enjoy. Moisture is perfect and combustion is excellent, room note is acceptable by many and no tongue bite for me. Its a different aromatic than what the american market usually offer (reminds me of blue note by dan tobacco with a major lean toward the maple/butterscotch taste rather than fruity citrusy profile of blue note). Highly recommended indeed. If you are after an aromatic go for it, if not leave it alone and dont scare the others (my only criticism on this blend is that i wish it has more maple to it, its that much good flavor)

When I was young (nearly 50 years ago), I did not have many criteria to choose tobacco, so I went with a try and fail approach with what was imported at that time in Italy. So it happened that I smoked some aromatic tobacco, mainly the Amphora Green and Red. I could finish the green bags, but with the red I had to throw it away. So from that time, every time I saw the aromatic tag, I changed my way. Indeed it was like filling up the pipe with some sort of marmelade hiding totally the natural tobacco attributes. Now that I am older I am looking for milder tobaccos. When I read the reviews of the Autumn Evening from C&D, I though, well maybe I could give it a try, although the aromatic tag. So I did and it was a big surprise. It is aromatic, because the mapple flavour is evident, but firstly it does not cover the Virginia taste, although cavendish. Secondly it is extremely mild, so I can smoke it even in big pipes. The room note is very pleasant to the point that my wife was surprised. It smokes easy and evenly all along the smoke. It is not a 4 star tobacco, but for sure I will buy a few more tins. Maybe it gets you a bit tired at the end of the tin, but after a couple of pipes I can sleep deeply and the mouth in the morning is nice. So it is a good deal. Very pleasant. Reccommended if you look for a pleasant mild tobacco that taste still of tobacco.

Its very sugary. It smokes fast. Has some potential to bite. The problem, I find, is it's artificial. It's Aunt Jemima's not maple syrup. It has an artificial quality to it, a PG like butteriness. There are lots of brown sugar notes. Not much tobacco taste. The red virginias bring some zing and a bit of depth, but it's still unequivocally in the shallow end of the proverbial pool. There is some body to the smoke. It's very, very sweet and the room note is tops. Probably the best room note there is; nobody is going to complain about the smell. I get why it's popular, but I'm not really impressed by it. The taste is good, but not great. It can bite. I'd wager it'll give you popcorn lung if inhaled and smoked repeatedly. 2.5 stars. Kinda overrated, but if you're an aromatic lover give it a go. Good bulk price. They should change the name from Autumn Evening to Cornell & Diehl Milling Company.

I had high hopes for this one based on all the positive reviews but, unfortunately, my love for this blend stops at the tin note/room note. I get minimal maple flavor for about a third of the bowl and nothing but hot/dry air from that point on. I’m also not impressed with the actual quality of the tobacco. I keep giving it chances but it still hasn’t done anything remotely remarkable for me.

C&D Autumn Evening. October 7, 2021 Pipe – 3 faced Jack O Lantern Billiard (Purchased from Facebook) Beverage – Screwball Peanut butter Whiskey Straight and on the Rocks

Bag/Tin note is Caramel and Chocolate . Dry Draw, Sweet and Sugary. Consistency – Moist but not goopy - Springy, C&D Autumn Evening - On Thursday October 7th, 2021 – I Tried my first smoke of Autumn Evening I had purchased this tobacco in 2019 season. The tobacco storage method was in an unopened tin and stored in a cool dry place. The initial Char light was smooth but I did have to re-lite several times to establish the initial ember. The introductory taste was mostly nutty with a pleasantly sweet room note. I did taste some hints of caramel and chocolate during the smoke about ¼ way through the smoke. Overall impressions were mostly nutty though. Once an acceptable ember was established the flavor/smoke stayed very cool and smooth through the bowl. I found this blend to be cool burning smoke with absolutely no tongue bite and no gurgle from excessive moisture. It required a few relights after the ember was established. I was drinking screwball peanut butter whisky straight and on the rocks during this smoke. Overall I would give this blend a 2 out of 4 stars for my taste. It was an ok smoking experience and this is a blend that I will revisit in the future to see if it improves with age.

This is a wonderful blend. Not TOO aromatic. You can taste the tobacco. If Haunted Bookshop is described as cigarettes, I would describe Autumn Evening as French Toast!

Delicious, relaxing, almost an all day smoke but I like to move on to English blends later in the day.

Buy this one. You won’t regret it.

I was very pleased with this blend and found it to be a very interesting smoke. The tinnote was a very bold, maple and vanilla. The ounce I received was a little drier than I prefer, but I gave it a shot without trying to rehydrate it. It packed well and required very few relights.

Early on the maple was prominent,but at times would fade to reveal a bright, citrusy flavor. About mid bowl it changed gears again and developed a nutty/honey flavor. For the finale, the tobacco became very oaky and tasted of Canadian whiskey.

The roomnote throughout was tolerable, but had somewhat of a deer urine odor to it. Most deer hunters will know what I am talking about. Ironically, when I think of Autumn Evenings, I think of setting around in my hunting clothes preparing for the next days adventure, the reek of deer lure stuck in my nose

I will definitely be adding this into my rotation

Very popular Cornell & Diehl aromatic. The consistency of the flavorings bring this one above many others. I'm reviewing this a year and a half after first opening and jarring the tobacco. It's a bit more mild now in flavor than when I first smoked it. Recommended to smoke when freshly opened.

The tin note might be the best part of this blend. It's a strong toffee/caramel/maple and vanilla aroma. Strongly reminded me of the toffee candies I used to eat as a kid.

The smoke itself brings notes of sweet vanilla, some spice, some smokiness. But caramel/maple pretty much dominates this blend. I don't get the Virginia distinctively. This is really a toffee-flavored blend for me.

Mild in body, mild-medium in strength (on the milder side), medium in flavor. Beautiful aroma. Not overly complex blend, but then again, it mostly tastes like a variety of added flavors that are all brought together beautifully.

Fairly consistent flavor. Smokiness and pepper develop a bit after the initial few puffs, possibly due to the Whisky or Rum flavoring. Otherwise, I'm not tasting any noticeable Whisky/Rum, nor fruit/citrus flavorings.

Ribbon cut, easy to pack and smoke. No relights. Perfect moisture level out of the tin. Doesn't get hot nor does it give a tongue bite. Can be an all-day for a very happy aromatic smoker.

This is a very nice aromatic tobacco. Now that I'm finishing the tin I start to miss it a bit. But throughout the time I had it, it wasn't one of my favorites. But for its unique consistency, strong toffee notes, and medium flavoring, I give it a three stars rating and will probably buy more next year close to, you know, Autumn.

WOW I got it!!! So has an aromatic to be . Finaly I find an aromatic which does not have a totaly lack of nicotin. The red cavendish is silky smooth by medium strength . The maple casing stays clearly till the last puff. There is nothing wrong with Autum Evening.

I can't really explain this one - I opened the bag (It was a bulk buy of 4 oz.) WET.... TO WET and the smell made me want pancakes with a sheepdip load of butter! and of course - Maple Syrup. I attempted a bowl and at the first light, it was So darn sweet I just pitched it. Jarred the remainder divided into 2mason jars. Now this initial review is from the initial purchase - back in Nov 2019. Now it's October 2020 and I opened a jar and the note was very dull in comparison to what I remembered. Let a good bowl dry a bit. Packed a bowl stepped out and started my first light. I could not even get my tamper out of my pocket before the entire house almost in unison yelled and screamed at the horrors of whatever I was smoking! It must have been bad - real bad - as this has NEVER happened to such a degree! While they kicked and screamed about the horrors that were drifting into the house - they started slamming doors and windows as well! It was quite the todo(n't)! I attempted the tamp and relight and after 2 fair puffs, decided this was a absolute failure! On all front's, maybe a bad batch? If so - shouldn't others have had this experience? I can not recommend in anyway at all - I can not even give this away as it would be like giving you a sour grape while being told they are the sweetest you have ever had! Sorry - this is no for me.

Rating of Strength, Flavor, Taste, Room Note are not really how I would place this as they do not have the 'descriptive verbs' I would really like to use.

Autumn Evening is a bitter smoke with an amazing tin note if you like the smell of burnt maple syrup. My wife said it smells like a candle from a frou-frou shop. Hints of vanilla and "spices" were most apparent to me, but above all else, there is a bitter unpleasantness about it that I can't quite put my finger on. I noticed maple only after reading a review. Smoked cool, and clean, but required more re-lights than normal...most likely due to my sub-par packing skills. I purchased the bulk, instead of the tin, and it arrived much drier that I had expected (10 days in transit). At first it seemed crumbly, but after placing in a jar, it still had the springiness needed. By the power of suggestion, I picture myself walking along a forest trail while the leaves are falling.

Prepping: It arrived on the dry side for me surprisingly (bulk purchase, not tin).

Notes: Maple. That is the predominant topping. Maple. Except for the vanilla and possibly the whiskey, the other flavorings don't show up. The maple/sugar flavor is the main player. You would think you're smoking a semi-sweet stack of pancakes.

I can see why the blend is a top seller for C&D. It isnt overbearing on sweetness nor goupie like most aros. Room note, as one would expect, is great. Nic strength is low. Outside of the fall season, I wouldnt care to smoke this. Sutliff's Pumpkin Spice would be closer to an all year blend for me than AE.

However, it is a solid blend. Not a favorite but definitely a great choice for the crisp Autumn days (or evenings). 6/10

I disagree with tobacco reviews on this tobacco. C&D “only” mentions a light casing of maple, and that is all I get. I smoked it before I looked at this site and it’s description. I got more of the red virginia than anything else. Room note had a light carmel/maple. Smoked hard brings on some light bite. Good smoke but not great or memorable. 3 stars

Maple smell and taste, plus sugar, maybe some vanilla...or maybe that's the rum...or the whiskey. I can't taste citrus but maybe it blends in with the VA.

I can't sort out all the different flavorings, but I think they give it a nice complexity. I might be off the mark here, but I'm reminded of another famous aro with a pile of stuff I couldn't identify, Mac Baren Scottish Mixture. Not the same in the flavor dept., but similar in character (if that makes sense) with Autumn Evening being more heavy handed with the toppings.

Overall a mild, pleasant, surprisingly balanced smoke. In terms of its aromaticness...aromaticity... (?) I'd put it somewhere between an English aro like Pembroke on the low end and the Rattray's summer blends I've tried at the top end. Rattray's really likes to pile on the flavorings in those summer blends, I'll tell ya. I like them anyway.

I am not getting any bad vibes or tastes from this blend. It's delicious. Nice to have a good virginia based aro. Its definitely maple, you get a nice little sweet taste on every puff but it does not blot out the taste of tobacco. No goo, no bite. Def try it if you like maple, dont let the critics get in the way of what you think you want.

Maybe the tin isnt as good as the bulk. Try the bulk

Cornell & Deihl's Autumn Evening is a very pleasant aromatic. It consists of mostly maple syrup flavoring; however, there is a faint hint of almost a vanilla-ish buttermilk. Overall, I like this blend and is one of my most favorite aromatics.

I bought a 57 gram tin of this a couple of weeks ago for the whopping price of $96 Australian dollars. It's pretty good, but won't make my favourites list. Opening the tin, you get the lovely sweet fruitcake/caramel like aroma which is pretty common among a lot aromatics. Smells great, and tastes alright. Made the house smell pretty nice outside the room I smoked it in. My wife sitting on the other side of the room, just said it smelled of smoke. Stepping out of the room, and even outside the house, there was a lovely bit of room note though. There's a bit of nicotine kick with this one. After every bowl, I was feeling a bit of a buzz. Not strong enough to sicken me. I would potentially buy this one again, particularly if none of my favourites are available for whatever reason.

Cornell and Diehl Autumn Evening

Initial flavors are pancakes and maple syrup along with maple flavored pork breakfast sausage. In the beginning I think I am smoking a pure cavendish aromatic. After a couple more puffs , the Virginia does come through creating a mesh of natural tobacco flavor melded with maple and butter topping.

I’m not a big fan of aromatics , but this is pretty fun and enjoyable so far! While the flavors are nice , they also are pretty one dimensional, not really changing much throughout the bowl.

Room note is very pleasant. Overall maybe a little bit too flavored for me , but I can see why people really love this blend. I got a bowl of this in a trade and I think I’ll buy a little tin , just to have around.

A 2.5 for me, not quite my style , but I’ll give it a 3 star. I definitely respect this blend and don’t want to bash it.

This is a very nice desert tobacco for after a heavy meal. The only flavoring i detect is pure Virginia and citrus and it's not hard to detect. For an aromatic, This is definitely not bland. No searching for flavor is necessary. It's there.. If you like citrus with a slight nicotine kick ( Buzz ) or if you are a Virginia fan, This one is for you.

My start was in aromatics and the trick with this one is patience sip it slow and enjoy the tobacco look at it as a dessert smoke. For starters, the tin aroma is heavenly! Maple and some caramel coffee!

First smoking impressions were great, it really captured the essence of maple syrup, made me think of pancakes for some reason. If these first impression qualities would have stayed consistent for future smokes or even for the remainder of the pipe, then this would have been perfect... unfortunately the flavour faded past mid-bowl for me, almost every time. The room note did attract an older lady and two bypassing girls in a timeframe of 5 minutes, so that's something.

The loss of flavour might be an issue of too much casing or just my palate. I plan to save this for occasions when I want to treat myself with something sweet. Small bowls and days between!

Somehow - and contradicting to both C&D's description as well as the mentioned flavourings on this site - my nose perceives the flavorings as "Coffee!!...ish..." Coffee-ish with some hazelnut, milk-chocolate and some hints of vanilla and fruits .. oh.. and some mild, yet very pleasing maple backbone is there as well! By the way: The tin note somewhat reminds me of 'Momoyama I' by Japan Tobacco. All in all it's a bit artificial in its character, which grants it somewhat of an "OTC-feeling" (somewhat artificial and rather intense flavorings with the tobacco in the background, but it somehow just fits the bill of the blend, without making it "a bad smoke".)

Anyhoo... it smells rather inviting and I somehow really enjoy it! Albeit maybe being a bit intense.... I'm usually no aromatic guy. Yet the tin note was pleasing enough for me to load a cob and try my first bowl... which wouldn't be my last bowl! ;-)

"The smoker will appreciate the taste of Virginias while those around will flock to the warm, inviting fragrance." - it says.. and besides the pleasing (yet slightly artifical) topping which also presents itselfs with the coffee-ish aroma as the main actor. Warming, rich coffee which got infused with hazelnut, vanilla, milk chocolate syrups! Oh, and the edge of your cup is iced with maple syrup, mhm delish! There's also a rather pleasing spiciness that outbalances the flavorings and of which I'm not sure where it comes from? Maybe a "spice-flavoring" in the mix? It's too spicy to originate from the Virginias alone I suppose!

About half way through the bowl a pleasant and somewhat peat-y and slightly sharp booze note becomes more and more present to me. It reminds me more of a Whisky rather than rum and it's this very note, which I find myself longing for as soon as I set the bowl alight.

The fact it also offers some pleasing, earthy spiciness, as well as the factor that the flavorings aren't as intense as in the tin note makes this a pleasing, calming and "warming" smoke for me.

Even when I'm smoking the pipe I can sense the room note, which I usually never can when I don't leave the room for a few minutes - and it's a warm and pleasing room note! Indeed it's "warm" as described by C&D, and really comforting.

Nothing I could smoke All-Day, but an aromatic lover may consider this to be an All-Day I suppose. It's mild in strenght, rich in taste, smooth on the palate and caressing the soul with its uncomplicated and "OTC-ish flavor". Usually I'd go with 3-stars, as I'm not that much of an aromatic gut, but I feel this one deserves all 4 stars, as this is one of the best, if not the best (straight) aromatic I've had so far (not taking the "semi-aromatics" (only slightly flavored, rather natural blends) into consideration).

I'd like to end my review by quoting DK's review: Making a decent aromatic pipe tobacco is probably the easiest thing for a blender to do. Making a great one is probably the hardest. This one is probably as close to perfection as there is in an aromatic.

Edit: somehow my last smoke gave me an aftertaste of "Maggi" (german spiced sauce for soups and alike...) that was very persitent and has put me off this blend eversince... totally odd! I'll respond if I dare to pack it again, as the pipe also smells of 'Maggi' now... am I loosing my mind? My GF also mentioned it to smell very puky and odd... totally changed somehow? Stored in mason jar.

This is an enjoyable tobacco for the first half of the bowl. It's one of those aromatics that truly tastes the way the blend smells. A great mixture of Maple and Vanilla. I bought this blend mainly for the maple since that's my favorite type of aromatic, but the maple isn't prominent here. It's not hard to detect, but it's not incredibly strong either. It complements the other flavors in the casing well.

The tobacco itself is a dark, course cut tobacco. I couldn't smell any specific tobacco due to the topping of the blend. The tobacco itself was a bit on the dry side and didn't need to be dried out before lighting. Burns well and I didn't have to fight with re-lights.

My dislike was about halfway through the bowl. It seems that the taste of the topping fades away and I was left with a taste of ash and bitterness. I try to smoke it like all my aromatics... barely keeping the tobacco lit so it doesn't burn too hot. I've had this experience every time I've smoked it. Starts out great, but ends up ashy and I usually don't finish the last 1/4 or so.

The room note is fantastic. I ordered this in a tin and am going to age it to see how it changes. I've read positive results from people that have aged this.

I ordered 2 oz. bulk and tried a few bowls of this on the recommendation from some folks in my online pipe club. I asked about what are some of the best aromatics to try, and this was a frequent and highly recommended blend. I love the bag note & the room note. I love the taste of the first 1/3 of the bowl - light, even puffing produces a really nice flavor of smoke. Unfortunately the flavor just doesn't hold up throughout the entire smoke for me. I'm not impressed with the taste of the tobacco used in this blend once the casing burns off. Every time I smoked it I would hit a point somewhere around halfway through the bowl in which I found myself wishing I was smoking one of my nonaromatic blends. It seems like the second half has a bit of a sour taste to it - I like this in a good VaPer, but it clashes with the sweet, sugary flavors of the first half of the bowl.

I don't find this to be repulsive in any way, but I'm just not really excited about it and I have no desire to continue smoking it.

I'm not a keyboard commando on a crusade against aromatics - I really want(ed) to find some aromatic blends that I would enjoy. Unfortunately, this didn't do it for me. I traded away the remaining 1.6 oz for some Star of the East Flake which I find much more tasty.

Not much flavor here, and what little exists is very poor. Very ashy with a hint of chemical sweetness. Reminds me of an ashtray full of old cigarette butts at IHOP.

Despite an extremely pleasant tin note, this tobacco is pure suffering on the tongue. Acrid, tarry and bitter, with barely any flavor felt at all. This is not an autumn evening I'd like to experience again.

this review is just to keep track for myself mainly, less intended as a serious in depth review. Just to keep an eye of what ive tried and what I like, with quick notes about it. alot of these notes are from memory, and I will update the review as I continue smoking them.

straight up 1 out of 10. tastes like smoke. burnt crap. I did leave this stuff in my car though, when it was really hot, and through the winter. alot of temperature changes. before that i remember it having a sort of caramel taste. Idk, after that, zero flavor, litteraly just like torched earth.

This stuff is my go to arromatic blend. It's mild and sweet and reminds me of breakfast at my grandmother's house where pancakes and maple syrup were always a staple. Unlike most C&D blends this one needs a little drying or it bite a bit. Unless you have a strong aversion to maple flavoring I recommend the you at least try this one.

This blend came highly recommended, so I was excited to try it. I opened the tin and was immediately hit with a wonderful tin note of maple syrup and some rum and vanilla, giving it a 'chocolaty butterscotch' smell. It lights easily and burns well and has no tongue bite.

However, by mid-bowl, it starts to lose its taste. Don't get me wrong, its still pleasant enough, but very dull, almost a little ashy (IMO), with just a hint of nicotine. Again, not enough for me to dislike it, but definitely enough for me to move on to another blend.

I picked this one up for two reasons. 1) I was given an unmarked 4oz bag from Cornell & Diehl that I dislike. I was told by someone they thought it was Autumn Evening, I wanted to compare the two. 2) The owner of the pipe museum recommended it and so I had to try it.

Autumn Evening certainly did not win any brownie points when the bag was opened. It had a bland unremarkable scent with some soapyness and chocolate, that was neither rich or dialed back to let the tobacco breathe. I also found the ribbon to be cut too small and was a pain to pack.

There wasn't much bite or depth when smoked. I have no idea where all the listed flavors are in the description, this is one of the least aromatic aromatics I've smoked. It was just generic. One oddly unique aspect was the ash, it was so white... almost as if I just burned a stack of papers.

Upon comparing it to my mystery bag, it was a tad lighter and smelled a bit more of chocolate. Both were unenjoyable, but this one was honestly worse.

Disclosure: I smoke mostly English blends.

With that in mind, C&D's Autumn Evening is a welcome occasional treat for me. While most reviews have noted a strong maple flavor, I for some reason put it closer to maple syrup (as in Trader Joe's) and vanilla-flavored pancakes adorned with semi-sweet chocolate chips.

This blend has come close to biting my tongue -- but then again, most aromatics I've tried do that to me. So proceed with increased caution if you experience the same.

This is one fine, sweet tobacco. It is SO sweet in fact, that this is to be considered a dessert. The maple syrup is dominant and it does not make for a complex smoke, it is a straight shooter no doubt. But I like it. Is it a favourite? Not really, but it does the trick. This is a wife pleaser, she loves how I smell after smoking it. I find it too sweet in the long run but enjoy a small bowl, or a large one cut with some burley.

The pouch note on this is really nice, very rich and sweet - definitely named well, based on 'pouch note'. The moisture level of my particular bag was a bit on the moist side and I found that some drying was required to get it to the right moisture content needed to yield good smoking characteristics. Smoked right out of the pouch it was a bit moist and had all of the accompanying issues of too-moist tobacco (gurgle, excessive re-lights, bite, etc.) but once dry it smokes wonderfully. It will bite if pushed too hard, which in not surprising in an aromatic, but it is a bit more forgiving than many aromatics that I've smoked in that regard.

The flavor and strength, to my taste, were roughly mild to medium (I smoke aromatic, Virginia flakes, and English blends) and generally pleasant - not overly strong, but not Lane 1Q light either. There is far more topping/casing flavor than tobacco flavor, but you can still taste the tobacco. The added flavors were not over the top sweet or spicy either, but rather a nice middle of the road that I have been appreciating more and more as I work through this bag. I was expecting a bit more, but as I learn the characteristics of this blend better I've been getting more of the flavors to come out. Compared to Cornell & Diehl Maple I would certainly suggest this blend - there is nothing wrong with their Maple, but this offers more in the flavor department.

All of that said, my first bowl reaction was not particularly stellar. It seemed that as with many of the more popular tobacco blend reviews, there may have been a number of people extolling the virtues of this blend a bit more than was warranted, but with time I find myself warming to this blend and I would certainly order it again at this point. Like any tobacco, you have to put some effort into learning the best way to get the most out of it, and this blend is worth that effort (if you like aromatics that is!)

Super sweet and syrupy. Not bad, I imagine for an aromatic. One even tastes a wee bit of tobacco flavor from the delicious Cavendish-pressed Red Virginias. A reminder that as much as I love the punctuated smell of Aromatic burning pipes, I am not personally cut out for Aros.

Maybe what is not clear is that as far as Aros go, this one will illicit a good rating from me. Sweet, yes.. but the baccy flavor was there in near full swing.

Absolutely love this blend. I love all flavors of maple, coffee, pumpkin pie, caramel, and all things autumn. This blend delivers and doesn't fade away. Though your own taste may vary from mine, I don't feel this casing is overly sweet. Just right by my reckoning. I find myself reaching for this more than any other. The tin note matches the taste and that's always good in my book.

I bought a few ounces of this last fall in bulk form after reading so many good comments about it. I smoked only half an ounce or so and was very disappointed with it: It had an awesome room note but there was a "metallic" taste that was just awful to it and I couldn't stand to smoke it. Knowing it was mostly a VA blend, I decided to jar and revisit it after some time passed: A good decision it turns out!

After about 8 months aging in a Mason jar, the metallic taste was gone and I got the nice maple flavor that "everyone" raved about ... finally! The room note, as I said, is really one of the most pleasant of any blend I've tried. And now that the "edge" has been taken off of it by some cellar time it is a very nice, enjoyable smoke, great for the fall season, IMHO.

I know that most aromatics don't improve with age but this one was a definite exception to that rule. Perhaps buying it tinned would avoid the taste I experienced, I don't know. But if you try this blend, and I recommend you do, and it isn't quite "right" it will benefit from cellaring.

This is claimed as a heavy aromatic, full of taste, full of flavour

Really it have a lot of Maple flavour, bu mainly in the Room notes... The taste and flavour remains in the Room, in the Pipe, in the hands, but not muck in mouth or in the smoke...!

In the smoke... it becomes almost tasteless, but good

Also, it is strong in Nicotine for a typical aromatic.

4 stars, very good, but not will amasing for people that not like aromatics.

Being the good old, fourth generation northern Vermonter that I am I know Maple Syrup. I know it well enough to say I spent a good amount of my teenage years working to sugar houses collecting buckets and boiling. That being said Autumn Evening does not have a "real" maple flavor, it just kinda tastes sweet.

That being said this stuff is really good, especially for an aromatic. The flavor is sweet, it burns pretty cool, and the room note is par excellence. Surprisingly, there is a little vitamin N there, and being so sweet this blend sneaks up on you a little, its not a lot, but it is there. An excellent choice and a very elegant aromatic. Highly recommended.

The first few smokes weren't anything to write home about, but around the 3rd bowl of it, i was hooked. The moment it meets my senses I'm walking through the maple forests of Vermont on a cool fall afternoon, bundled up in my flannel and testing the drips in the trees. I like tobaccos that take you somewhere. This one freakin' teleports you immediately to your fondest memory of an "Autumn Evening". If you like aromatics, you'll love this one. Give it time. Finish the tin. I guarantee you'll be back for more. It's just a matter of time........

Its ok. I'm not getting the maple taste that everyone else seems to be getting. In fact, I found it pretty tasteless regardless of what I smoked it in; briar, cob, or meerschaum. The tin note is good, but without the taste coming through for me, I see no reason to smoke this. However, I'll give this 2 stars since everyone seems to really like it and of course you can judge for yourself.

Since autumn's about to come on, I felt it was time to start firing up some maple tobacco on these nice cooler Indiana evenings.

This was my first go on Autumn Evening. Honestly I found the tin note overwhelming, lol. Warm butter. The taste is not nearly as strong, actually it seems like about an even mix of flavoring taste and tobacco taste. Slow draws are best. These bring out maple, butter, and sometimes cinnamon. I like that others sharing the aerosphere can enjoy the scent while I can still enjoy tasting tobacco rather than pure candy, and there's just enough nicotine here -- a characteristic that I find most aromatics devoid of. My tin was uncharacteristically moist for a C&D offering, so about normal moisture level then, heh. I recommend letting it air dry for about an hour before loading up. Did not find any goop or gurgle and bite was none using good technique. A fine product IMO. I for one appreciate C&D's reluctance or refusal to hose their tobaccos with PG or any other gakky goop. Your waffles are ready!

This is no doubt one of the finest aromactic's available. My taste mostly takes me down the lux. English blend line, but after a recommendation from a gentleman at the local B&M, I gave this ago, and boy I'm glad I did. The quality of the leaf is superb, packs well, burns well, and delivers a rich wanderful smoke that turns everyones head. I found 0 tongue bite and the maple to taste to be just right. I will no doubt have many tins of this packed away for that every once in awhile change up from my everyday. Another fine job by C&D!!!!

This is my current favorite while listening to a chapter of a audiobook before retiring for the evening.

The smell in th ecan reminds me of a visit to a real NH Sugar Shack and enjoying leather aprons, a candy made by taking a ladle of hot syrup from the boil throwing out the window into a pile of snow.

Getting a good light takes three or four attempts but once lit I tend to smoke the entire bowl to the bottom without tamping or relighting. More out of forgetfulness than anything else. I just cose my eyes listen to my book and puff and relax.

I really like this stuff. It's maple flavor has mellowed over the year I've had it, and it's now perfect in my opinion. Hell, when I first smoked it new it was like smoking a stack of pancakes.

As you go along, the tobacco strengthens and becomes a little spicy, which I think is both groovy AND nifty, perhaps even swell.

Pipe tobacco names can be quite funny. I don't know what this has to do with Autumn or evening, I'm going to buy some more. You should try it.

I have tried and tried and tried to get along with this tobacco. I enjoy the flavor so much, I emailed C&D and asked them if they would put this casing on something different. The VA in this bites the bejesus out of my tongue. I have even came back to it after drying it for 2 year in the tin, and it still bites me. Also, it leaves a bit of undesired slop in the bottom of the bowl. If you can handle this tobacco, by all means give it a go!

Update 6/5/22 It's been 12 years since my original review. I have never stopped thinking about how awesome the flavor was, but also remembered how bad the tongue bite was. I recently bought another 2oz bag just for grins and giggles. Not quite sure what happened, either my tongue leathered up, or the tobaccos used had changed. Now there is ZERO tongue bite, and I enjoy this blend immensely! I'm so glad I decided to give it another go!

I had a tin of this sitting around for about a year, so I thought I would finally give it a try. When I opened the tin, it revealed loose, coarse cut tobacco that had brown and black tones with hues reminiscent of chocolate. Even before I could see this blend, I could smell it when I popped the top. All things that can be coated deliciously with maple syrup came to mind. My mind bounced between French toast, pancakes, and maple cured bacon as I took in the scent. The tobacco was slightly moist to the touch as I packed the bowl, and an unlit sip of the pipe tasted of light maple syrup.

As a matter of fact, that is all I got from this blend, a light maple syrup flavor from the charring light to the bottom of the bowl. The finish was long on this blend, and my taste buds felt like I had just eaten French toast and maple syrup for up to an hour after smoking. I actually had the urge to wash my beard, as if it had syrup stuck in the whiskers. This blend did leave a goopy mess in the bottom of a couple of my briars, but overall it generally left clean ash. The room note was a pleasant maple aroma that had toasty undertones.

Overall, I like Autumn Evening. It is a good mild smoke, with a very mild casing that is pleasing to my taste buds. This will not make it into my regular rotation, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at another tin.

This is the first dive I have taken into aros in quite a while. Now I see why C&D tend to be so popular amongst aro smokers. This is good quality stuff. The topping as I smoke it reminds me a great deal of that old 1980's kids cereal that was made to taste and look like waffles. I like that. It's like this is an adult pleasure with a kid's light hearted touch. The red VA's aren't all that noticeable on first light, you just get a big wallop of the topping, but the tobacco begins to show up and shine through at mid bowl. You can tell they used quality ingredients all the way through. It smokes cool and with out drama. No bite, no goo or sludge in the bowl. In a world of only aros it gets 3.5 stars. In the wide world of pipe tobacco it is a solid 3.

I bought this blend with high hopes that it would become one of my favorites. I really wanted to enjoy this tobacco, but something about it just turns me off.

As some of the other reviews have said I found this to taste like cigarette smoke with a maple casing. I have not experienced a tobacco like this ever before. Could it be possible that the tin is much better than buying it in bulk? I ordered 1 oz in bulk just to sample the blend, and don't think I will even finish that. The blend does light easily, smoke well with minimal tongue bite, and leaves no goop in the pipe.

Go ahead and try it for yourself as the maple casing may be something you like, but don't have too high of expectations or you may be let down.

I have smoked and enjoyed several "premium" maple flavored aromatics. I am not referring to any over-the-counter brands that are so familiar. The premium maple aromatics I have experienced are all excellent. However, I will say that Autumn Evening is my favorite. The maple is delicate but you know it is there. Those around me like the aroma. I love the taste and aroma. Most of all, it is the Red Virginia Cavendish that does it for me. This provides an excellent base tobacco flavor along with that wonderful maple aroma and flavor. If you want a satisfying Virginia tobacco flavor along with excellent burning qualities and a taste you don't tire of, this is one of the best investments you will ever make in a premium aromatic. Not at all over done. It is premium tobacco and a perfectly balanced aromatic. I give it four stars. I smoke it in my daily rotation of aromatics, flakes and other non-aromatics. It has a permanent place among my favorite daily tobacco choices.

UPDATE: 09/11/2009 I find this to also be a wonderful Mixer. For example, I use the following formula on a regular basis: 3 parts Two Friends Heritage, 2 parts Riverboat Gambler and 1 part Autumn Evening. It is a superb smoke and I call it Pot O' Gold.

This has been tried three times now and still gives a bitter after- taste of burnt maple and artificial maple at that. I'll try it again, not soon though. There are much better maple aromatics that seem natural without the bitter ending.

This is one of my favorite tobaccos. Highly recommended for veteran and (over all) novice pipesmokers. Is one of the few aromatics that tastes exactly like it smells. I´d also recommend to the English mixtures lovers who wants to try a full aromatic mixture. The practical inexsistence of tongue bite is a plus for this blend. Unfortunately it´s difficult to get in Europe.

I found his a bit disappointing. I am an aromatic smoker (maybe I should say a smoker of aromatics?) but I found this to be a disappointing flavour. I also found, despite the notes on the tin and comments elsewhere, that it was not so smooth - it prickled my throat unpleasantly. I guess I am a woos when it comes to strength too - it was not overpowering but too strong.I gave up after half a bowl-full. Tried it a couple of months ago, and had the same reaction, so the rest of the tin is going into that deep draw of failed experiments. I think I'll save the maple syrup for my pancakes.

I can't imagine that there's anything more difficult than pleasing part-time aromatic smokers, slumming Virginiaphiles, freeloading Latakia-lovers. I know that because I'm part of that crowd and I often wag my unblistered tongue to say, in consternation, "Why can't anybody make a nice aromatic that doesn't make you feel like you've just spent an hour with your tongue down the throat of a crocodile with a terminal case of the sneezes?" Hot-burning aromatics make me feel vulnerable in front of my pipes--so vulnerable that I've gone to filtered pipes whenever the urge for a little sweetness gets my nose a-twitchin'.

All of this (or at least some of it) is why I'm so happy to have met C&D's Autumn Evening this very autumn evening. Composed of nothing more than cavendish-treated red Virginias and a thoroughly enjoyable maple essence, this is an aromatic with the smoking qualities of a non-aromatic. On opening the tin, which is dated from just a few months back, I actually found the top tobaccy to be a little on the dry side. Heck, it would take Captain Black six months in front of a dehumidifier to reach that very smokeable level of moisture.

I'm not sure that the soldiers of the aromatic brigade (like the fellow I met at Iwan Ries a couple of years back who said, "I only smoke that Cherry Cavendish") would find much to like in this blend. The maple flavor, at least when compared to some of the more intense aromatics, might seem just a little too muted. But for those gentle souls who have always viewed dipping into an aromatic as a gateway to full-blown, dungeon-dwelling masochism, well...this might be a good place to start.

I found this blend to be very mild and just plain bland. The maple aroma was there but it just did'nt translate into the smoke at all. The further down the bowl the blander it got. I will still try other maple aromatics but this one was a turnoff.

This review is about the tinned version. The maple casing is artificial. First part of the bowl is more or less smokable, second part is horrid. Be careful that you don't ruin your pipe. When you are looking for a maple tobacco there are far better choices (e.g. Essence of Vermont, 4noggins).

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a couple of posts in the ASP news group in a thread discussing Black Cherry Aromatics. I have yet to find a cherry pipe tobacco that even came close to be of any real interest, but a couple of posts mentioned C&D's blend as being a similar to the Gawith, Hoggarth & Co's blend at a far cheaper price.

So to make a long story short I called C&D and one of nicest ladies answered the phone who seemed extremely knowledgable about tobacco (turned out it was Patty Tarler) and offered to send me a free sample of their Black Cherry. Since I hadn't called with the intention of getting anything free, I quickly began to check out several of their many other blends while we were chatting. I had her add a tin of tobacco called Autumn Evening which from the description looked much more like a tobacco I might like.

Well, 2 days later the tobacco arrived and I still haven't found that elusive cherry blend, but the Autumn Evening was a very pleasant surprise. The aroma from the tin was of maple, but also of Virginia. It was far too moist to smoke, so I set out enough for several bowls to dry for a while. I think most of us have found that few tobaccos taste anything like they smell in the bag or tin, but when I fired up a bowl in a Dunhill Cumberland, the taste was not only of the maple which seemed to be more in the background, but also of some very good Virginia leaf. Being a Virginia, it will bite, so if you tend to be a fast puffer, take this one slow and enjoy. The only difference I noticed from the top layer of tobacco from that lower in the bowl, was that the maple flavor came through a little stronger in the first half of the bowl.

It didn't burn quite all the way to the bottom of the bowl, but that was probably the result me not letting it dry out further. However, there was no trace of goop in the bottom of the bowl. I don't know if I would call this a full blown aromatic, simply because the flavoring added is not sufficient to mask the taste of the Virginia leaf. So for lack of a better term, I'll just call it a very tasty and enjoyable blend. So if you're a Virginia/Perique smoker such as myself, you might find this one an interesting change of pace.

The Black Cherry? Well I'll smoke a few more bowls, but it seems it may be the case that I was simply predestined never to like cherry flavor tobacco. I may review it later.

I usually smoke Latakia blends, but I do enjoy several aromatics. There is a strong following for this blend on ASP and I guess I was expecting more.

To me it seemed heavily cased and a little wet, which seems to be at odds with most reviewers. I have Consolidated's Maple aromatic, and it seems very similar, though less wet and more "natural" which probably means more VAs and less Black Cavendish and burly.

My impression is not, "C&D has created a whole new class of aromatics" as I heard some say, and more like, "C&D has a maple."

Revised 05-17-2005 I just can't seem to smoke aromatics anymore so I am downgrading my recommendation. As I mention below, this is a good one if you like aromatics.

Appearance and tin aroma: Dark reddish and brown ribbons and smells like maple.

Packing and Lighting: Easy, 2-3 lights max.

Initial Flavor: Surprise! no green cavendish flavor here. Nice red cavendish and maple flavor.

Mid-Bowl: Aaahhh! good flavor from the leaf and casing. Everyone around me loves the room note!

Bottom of bowl: A suprising build up of strength and all that is left is mottled grey ash, very minimal moistness at heel. No bitterness here either.

Overall: In my quest for the perfect aromatic, this one has fit the bill. Hurray for C&D!!! I usually smoke Balkan's, English's and VA's, but for those times where I can't smoke the others, this does quite well. In fact, I was suprised at the nicotine content a few times with this blend. I found that this blend smoked particularly well in a big Meerschaum.

There's been such a great "buzz" about this blend in pipe circles,so I thought I'd give it a try.Let me start by saying that my regular smoke is Dunhill's 965 and that I lean towards full english's and oriental's.I do however enjoy cavendish's and other aromatics from time to time.I don't however enjoy this one! Autumn Eve. is an extremely boring blend of cased Va's and black cav.It has a bland flavor which hint's at the maple casings.Be warned also that it "gunks up" a pipe terribly,and one should be dedicated to it if you enjoy this blend.I expected sooo much more and was disapointed completely.Possibly those who enjoy "Half and Half" would like this,as it's equally flavorless! Pass This By! prep 10-29-04 ===UPDATE=== I have recently tried this blend in a meer and then in a clay churchwarden with suprisingly good results!It did'nt carry the "goopiness" with it as it did when smoked in a briar.I was also able to enjoy the flavor more throughly.It's not something I'd smoke daily or even weekly,but it was'nt as bad as previously reviewed either.I imagine it's the sort of thing I'll occasionaly smoke in my Zenith x-mas pipes in front of the fireplace this winter.... Smell amazing out of the bag (bought in bulk), quite moist despite being bulk. Left to dry for an hour or 2.

On charring light initial pleasant sweetness followed by the maple topping. This continues for a while but find it hard to enjoy the tobacco flavours, they feel very toned back and bland. Further down the bowl the sweetness fades maple topping still prevalent but not as strong. Now I'm smoked this many times in many pipes yet I still seem to have the same issue. 3/4 of the way down the people I start getting a sore throat and the tobacco starts to burn hot, I always leave this blend disappointed. This could of course simply because of my puffing cadence or my body just doesn't like the topping, and therefore my final score will not be influenced by this.

However, If this was a really enjoyable tobacco for I would be going back for pleasure and not to "give it another chance". At the end of the day the leaf isn't lacking in quality, I just feel it's here nor there and the topping doesn't carry it for me.

This is a quality blend. Good looking leaf, excellent moisture and keeps for a long time, excellent burning characteristics, no dottle, no goop, no bite, pleasant room note. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work with me. It may have a significant nicotine dose or the casing just doesn't work well with my chemistry, but this ALWAYS gives me a headache. Doesn't matter the pipe or my cadence. I switch to other blends or cigars and I'm fine. Obviously, I won't be purchasing again. I can only recommend that you try a small sample if you can. YMMV.

If Lane 1-Q could have a maple version this would nearly be it but with coarser cut. Perfectly paired with a pumpkin spice latte for Autumn. I can see why this is one of their best sellers. If dried out a tad it smokes easily and without bite. Worth checking out especially if you already enjoy 1-Q.

This blend is not a blend you come to if you do not simply want a very well rounded aromatic. The taste is almost exactly how it smells, very sweet, light hints of vanilla on the start of the burn, the maple is quiet strong but produces a very distinct taste that brings you back for more. Some may think the taste is “crowded” but that’s part of smoking an aromatic with these kinds of flavorings. It’s made for those that enjoy a medium strength blend with a large note of sweetness to the taste.

Not a bad tobacco. I do not have much experience with aromatics as this is my first one. It lights easy but I had to re light it multiple times. But every re light was worth it. The smell is fantastic once you open it up. The taste is sweet like a drop of maple syrup in the tongue then it finishes off with a natural sweetness of the red Virginia's. Would I buy it again? Not sure. I need to try other aromatics to compare but I enjoyed the bowl of it I smoked. I will be smoking this once it gets colder that is for sure.

Now we are moving into Fall I get the Autumn Evening out and enjoy a little aromatic smoke. Sweet to be sure but also special if you like Fall flavors. A pinch of a good Virginia will tone it down a little and add some Virginia flavor. I mix with a little Union Square and it is quite satisfying. Not my every day smoke but nice for a cool weather change.

I thought I'd like this one even though it's Cavendish, my least favorite of all tobacco. But it came very highly recommended so I dove in with a half pound and boy I'm dissatisfied.

It smells great from the tin, and room note has every one asking if pancakes are being served, but flavor wise left me disgruntled. Any one wanna trade I got about 4 oz of 1 year old?

Heard about this for years before I got around to trying it. I really wanted to like this. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. It's a quality tobacco, in many ways it's perfect. But the flavor was just a tad off putting to me - maybe annoying (?). It's blended well and balanced. The tin note is phenomenal. Smokes great and everything. But the taste didn't sit all that well with me. I'll probably buy another tin sometime in the future and if my opinion on it changes I'll update this review and either add or subtract a star or two.

That said, I do recommend it because everyone's tastes and preferences are different and, like I said, this is by no means a bad tobacco. The tobacco used are quality. Everything about is good. I just didn't care for how it tasted. You might love it.

I’m a fan of C&D blends in general, but I just can’t get into this one. The maple tin note gets overpowered by a alcohol type taste. The strength was a bit higher than I expected; not strong, just more than I’d have thought from a blend in this genre. Came rather dry and smoked easily. No bite and the taste lingers quite a while after smoking. I wouldn’t turn down a bowl, but unlikely to buy another tin.

I tried this tobacco for the first time this evening. I will admit that though I have been smoking a pipe for many years I have been very inconsistent with the hobby. Also, I have not developed the palette for tobacco that I would like in regards to identifying its make up. I will say everyone around the fire pit tonight loved the room note of Autumn Evening, as did I. I have read many reviews regarding it, which is why I tried it, but actually I was not overly impressed with it. I felt the flavor was pleasant but weak. Nothing really stood out to me. I have a question for each tobacco I try.... Is it "Jar Worthy"? Will it get a its own jar for my cabinet and get its custom label.

Autumn Evening is undecided. I will give it couple of more bowls to decide.

Regarding the tin I purchased. It arrived quite a bit on the dry side. Tin note was a strong maple and hint of vanilla. I would say pleasant. Now for the smoke. Burned hot and on the fast side due to the dryness. First bowl not a good experience. Maple was there but that soon disappeared into exactly what others have described. Ash and harshness. Not to be deterred, I rehydrated and jarred for over a year. Subsequently it has improved greatly. Much cooler when smoked and maple flavor held on through 2/3 of the bowl before dissipating. Virginia also improved. Not bad, but still not a particularly good smoke for me. I can tolerate it, but just being able to tolerate is not the pipe smoking experience I’m looking for.

I picked up a tin of AE due to the excellent advertising by C&D. It was a cold October day when I grabbed this from my tobacconist, enticed by both circumstance of season and the tin art. While I primarily smoke English, I do enjoy the rare aromatic when I know I'll be inside or in the company of those who enjoy the sweet aromas of vanilla, rum, or - in this case - maple, wafting under their noses.

The tin note on this was not like a "typical" aromatic. No need to lift the tin to the face to catch a scent. The moment the lid was off, the entire room smelled like maple and pancakes. As I said, I like the rare aromatic, but this was just too much for me. The next time I want to enjoy a bowl on an autumn evening, I'll reach for a jar of something with a lot of latikia.

I hated this at first. I was rough and harsh, the nicotine was unexpectedly strong and it was nothing like what I imagine when I picture an aromatic. After a few bowls, I was ready to throw it away, but let it sit in the sample bag for about a week or so to decant and dry just a bit in my tobacco box.

I came back to it this rainy night and I think I figured out the problem. I was treating it like a normal aero and just throwing it in my pipe and going to town on it. Usually, you can push areos a bit because of the burley, but it seems this one requires the slow, gentle puffing that I normally associate with virginas. I was getting better flavors and the nic hit was almost nonexistent and the harsh edge was basically gone unless I absent mindedly let my puffing speed up a bit. I found this one required slow and thoughtful smoking, just right for a cool autumn evening as the name implies...not so much for lively conversation and a rocking chair.

When I started to focus on the flavors, I noticed I was getting a bit of an apple flavor and mouth feel, and possibly some brown sugar or caramel. The lady friend said the room note was kind of appley to them and seemed to really enjoy the scent. I struck gold with her because she tends to like the more natural tobaccos and doesn’t usually like the heavily scented areos, but she seemed to really enjoy this. Every now and then I get a bit of a light whiskey or rum note, but it’s very feint and more of an impression than a distinct flavor. I’m not really sure if I’m tasting vanilla and maple or it’s that brown sugar and caramel flavor I pointed out earlier, either way it isn’t unpleasant. There might be too many flavors going on here to really sort out, so I can see why they choose to simply label it as maple on the packaging.

I think the red Virginia is a nice touch and helps to add a bit of dark flavors to a blend that might otherwise be cloyingly warm and bright if they used something lighter. There effect on the overall blend is probably more subtle than if you were tasting pure red Virginia leaf, but this really wouldn’t be an autumn/fall blend without it. Anything else just doesn’t make sense and it really shows C&D’s expert hand at blending. The only other option I’d even consider for something like this might be some small portion of aged dark burley flake, which I might try adding to this to see how it goes, but that might make it too dark.

I’m really surprised at how much of a difference packing and puffing technique makes on this blend, which could explain the wide array of mixed reviews this blend receives, as it seems to be kind of a love it or hate it tobacco. I don’t wish to imply that everyone that doesn’t like this is just smoking it wrong or something, as even when smoked correctly it might be something that not everyone will enjoy, but it did make an extreme level of difference that I haven’t really seen in any other aromatic tobacco. And not just in harshness, but in flavor and nicotine level as well, which I find somewhat puzzling, as I’ve never seen such a degree of difference like this, simply by a change of technique.

Overall, I found this one to be really enjoyable once I started smoking it right. Hope this helps someone out if you are having or previously had an unpleasant experience with this quintessential fall tobacco. I’ll most likely be picking up a tin or two of this every fall from here out.

Edit: I’m also interested to see what a year or so of tin aging would do for something like this, and expect it would deepen the flavor quite a bit and round off any remaining edges.

I originally reviewed this back in the autumn of 2020 from a tin dated 2019. It was awful. It had a burnt smell and taste. I smoked it a year later in 2021 and it was still bad. I tossed it. Wanting to like this blend so bad I bought another tin dated July of 2022. That review is as follows:

The tin aroma is maple syrup. Like Aunt Jemi… I mean Pear Milling Company inc. Maple Flavored Syrup Product. It’s ok but has a slightly fruity and chemical like sweet smell to it with notes of butter. It’s not bad but it’s not the best maple aromatic smell that I’ve smelled. It’s fairly damp, will smoke from the tin with no dry time.

The taste is much of the same. Had an artificial sweet maple syrup flavor with a fruit undertone. There was a noticeable butter or cream to this too. I’ll be damned it does taste like a buttered pancake. The topping stays 3/4 of the bowl. It definitely reminds of a rainy fall evening. The Red Virginia Cavindish has a sweet dark sugar maple taste on its own, with notes of tea leaves. Reminds me a lot of 507s. I also ordered some of C&D Red VA Cav (the base of this blend) to smoke on its own. While smoking the 2022 Autumn Evening I did not get any of the burnt sugar taste of flavor that I received from the 2019 tin. This tin is pleasant and something that I’ll smoke around others in the autumn months. I rather enjoyed it. No bite or harshness besides the slight artificial note. I feel this smokes the best in a cob.

Would now recommend if you wanted a maple aromatic. Room note I’m told is very good. Smoked out in public and people commented how well it smelled. It’s a good aromatic. One I’ll buy more of for sure.

Sucks that I got a bad tin. Turned me off to this blend for 3 years. If you tried it and got a burnt flavor maybe give another tin a go. Sucks C&D put out a bad batch.

I’m a new pipe smoker who is searching for a tobacco that I can smoke every day. Sorry to say, but Autumn evening didn’t fit the bill for me. The maple flavor is very noticeable, which I enjoyed. However, the longer I smoked, the harsher the taste. I may try in a different pipe next time .

Those who know my smoking preferences know that I steer clear of aromatics as a rule. Due to some quirk of my body chemistry, even the most carefully prepared aromatic blends give me horrendous bite, regardless of how gently I smoke them. This is THE exception, and what I believe aromatic tobaccos should aspire to be: sweet, biteless, almost devoid of nicotine, forgiving of cadence, and with both a pleasing flavor to the smoker and a pleasing aroma to bystanders. It comes quite dry (for an aro), and smokes the same. Although the tin note might put maple frontmost (though not in an overdone way; it's perfectly balanced), there is also vanilla and citrus, maybe a dash of bourbon oakiness. The one weakness of this blend- for me- is what makes it such a strong contender for the market it is aimed at. I speak of its near-lack of nicotine. Chenet's Cake and Mad Fiddler Flake are my daily companions; not many blends from American blenders come close to that high nicotine content (Gawith's offerings are in a class all their own, both for strength and price). To counter this, I add some straight Dark Fired Kentucky, in a ratio of 4 ounces AE to one ounce DFK. This not only gives it some cojones, but adds a pleasant light smokiness and molasses notes; I call the resultant blend "Autumn Embers". I'm finding myself smoking quite a lot of my tweaked version of this; bystanders never fail to comment upon the amazing aroma, while I can grin and enjoy my smoke, spice, and sweetness. Highly recommended in both forms; unaltered for primary aromatic smokers, "Embers" for those who want some more oomph while retaining the sweetness and room note. Once I've finished my latest batch, I'm going to see what happens if I substitute 5 O'Clock Shadow for the straight DFK, maybe at a higher ratio.

Some of the reviews here really surprised me on this blend, I found no citrus or vanilla taste or scent whatsoever. In fact, this is a tobacco I retreat to when I want a mild (very mild) smoke without all the heavy usual casing suspects. Other than a light maple taste and room note, I found this a very pleasant Virginia with no bite. Highly recommend this for newer smokers and those like me who enjoy both English and aromatic blends. Nicotine was minimal along with little gurgle.

I read a lot of positive reviews for Autumn Evening, and since I really like maple taste (and smell) I was eager to try this blend.

The first thing I noticed is that the tobacco was very dry upon arrival. None of the other blends I received with this order were dry either. After smoking a bowl I was somewhat disappointed that I couldn't detect much of the maple (or other) flavoring. It also seemed a bit harsh and just not as pleasant as I was expecting.

I saw some negative reviews that also mentioned they got a dry batch of this blend, so I thought I'd try to spray it a bit with some distilled water. I also tried in different corn cob pipes, some with a filter. After four bowls I'm still a bit disappointed with this blend, but am now getting a bit more of the maple flavor and it's a bit sweeter as well, so there is a little hope.

I only bought an ounce so I'll probably work though it, keeping it moist prior to smoking and perhaps it will grow on me. For now though, I'll give it a somewhat recommended. It's worth a shot, but seems to be hit or miss for different pipe smokers.

I am surprised I seem to enjoy this tobacco despite being an aro. I find the aroma of this tobacco rather pleasing, but it is so intense, it will fill up your room even before you open your tin. The tin note strongly evocates the smell of maple syrup or boiled sugar. The virginia profile is so pushed back and overtaken by it, that it is difficult to evaluate. As you move onto the third quarter of your bowl the casing seems to wane a bit, which in turn gives you the opportunity to bring the virginia leaf back to the front. I think it would have made more sense making this blend using burley leaf instead, but the final product is soft on the tongue and easygoing. I am not sure I'd buy again, but it can be a good addition to enjoy outdoors as you walk down the park.

I do not like aromatics and this was no exception. Yes it smells wonderful, but this like other aromatics does not taste very similar to the way it smells. The virginias are bland. The majority of the maple flavoring burns off when smoked. Really, this seems to me very similar in mouth feel to smoking a Black and Mild. It also irritates my sinuses and throat in the same way. My wife said it smelled like vanilla. I cannot recommend this at the price point.

C&D, Autumn Evening: A Unique Aromatic with a Vanilla-Maple Topping

The main flavors of the topping seem to be vanilla, brown sugar, maple and booze—in that order. They meld well in the tin-note, though I get mostly vanilla and the brown sugar consistently throughout the smoke. The tobaccos are made up of a Virginia and a red Virginia cavendish, which is what differentiates Autumn Evening from other similar aromatics. The smoke is smooth and light with some bright-grassy notes. Smoke this blend as you would a straight Virginia: sip it, because if you smoke too fast you will lose the flavors from both the tobaccos and the topping.

It smells wonderfully of Maple and sugar upon opening the tin, it’s the very best a Waffle House has to offer. The smell in the room was one of the very best I’ve ever lit up, according to my wife. The taste on my end was not quite up to bland, don’t look for any tobacco flavor here, there is none to be had.

This smells VERY appetizing. Vanilla smell, kind of toasty like a marshmallow, and maple.

The taste is toasty at the beginning. There is a nutty/maple flavor throughout the smoke. Vanilla is there in and out. It is hard to detect any of the other flavorings. Far a blend flavored like this, it was surprisingly dry.

I'm not sure what I was expecting with this one. I love aromatics, and I especially love C&D blends! I was excited whenever I was gifted a tin of this by a friend, and even more excited whenever I opened it and got a nose full of the tin note! It smells delicious for sure. It packed and lit just fine. That's the moment that the excitement stopped for me. I am simply not a fan of the flavor. It's hard for me to describe the reason why I don't like it. Perhaps it's the blend of sweet maple with whiskey. At any rate, it would be a fine smoke for someone who wants that type of flavor. I'll just figure out how to mix it with something else to make it more appealing to my palette.

I'm not an aro smoker but this is one of my exceptions. The maple flavor is excellent and comes through in the smoke but the Virginia cavendish blend still plays a part. It's a sweet and well rounded blend and excellent on a chilly evening.

I really had high hopes for this one and maybe that is what led to a minor letdown for me. It's good stuff no doubt but without any burley, a tobacco usually falls flat, IMO.

AE handles beautifully and doesn't give any problems in the mechanics of the experience. The problem for me was a lack of depth in the tobacco component and a rather surprising loss of aromatic quality in the last 1/3 of the bowl. What did become evident in the last third is an ashy flavor. Not a huge deal, after all I'm smoking tobacco.

All in all I'll gladly smoke up my ounce then probably not return to this Autumn evening. I'm trying to find my favorite aromatic. I've narrowed it down to Maple, just not this maple.

This is a sticky aromaticbut in a good way. I reserved one of my meerschaums. bowl smells like cappuchino. Delicious. Room note is tolerable for non smokers. they all liked it. for me as the smoker, this is a tobacco that smokes well in large bowls. no tongue bit except when it cooled down, next smoke may be little bit bitter. However I am always pleased smoking this baccy. Nicotin level is not too high.

IMO this is the perfect aromatic. Tin note is just amazing. Good maple flavor for the first half of the bowl, then it seems to dissipate. And what your left with is a good tobacco flavor. And this is the only aero I've had that gives a good nic hit.

I purchased this in bulk (baggie) so I can't comment as to the tinned tobacco. When I opened the bag, I did not smell much. I packed a bowl and it was a pleasing smoke, but still not strong on the flavors. I smoked some of the other bulk blends and left this one for a few weeks. When I got back to it and opened the bag, the sweet smell of maple and autumn was very noticeable (I live in new england). The smoke now has a definite mapley sweetness as well. It does have a slite bite at times, but it burns to white ash. Great for walking the dog at night then sitting on the porch to finish.

I am going to get 16oz bulk and store it for next year in an air tight container.

I would recommend it, especially if you see a sale on bulk (which is why I bought it).

I would put Strength and Taste right at Medium. Flavoring starts low but ages to medium. I can't comment on Room Note, the wife says "outside only", but the other dog walkers like the smell.

What fantastic blend for the fall! Autumn Evening has a great scent right out of the tin and it is not lost while smoking. I'd recommend drying it out just a tad before you smoke but it wasn't nearly as goopy as other aromatics I've smoke. Had not issues with keeping this tobacco lit, though the flavor sometimes get a little bland near the end of a bowl. Overall, a great blend to enjoy with pipe smokers and non-pipe smokers alike!

Woe! This stuff smells and tastes good. I am only an occasional aromatic smoker ( probably 10% of my consumption) but when i do smoke aro's it's got to be good. This fits the bill nicely and even though i find this highly aromatic it has excellant base tobaccos beneath which give's it a good mid strength smoke.

I bought this in bulk and it's so rich you can easily smell it through the bag, and in the draw, and in the next room! But it's a great flavour so just dont store it right next to other non aro's. No chemical taste for me. Reminds me of pancakes. Burn's well and not too sticky towards the end so i'm giving this the big thumbs up.

It's true! Autumn Evening performs as an aromatic should. It is not overly hydrated and can very well be smoked straight from bulk, or tin. It burns cool without tongue bite. It is not full of PG/humectants or other chemicals. AND it actually tastes like it smells! Imagine that!

There are a cornucopia of flavorings for Autumn Evening described on this website. They may all be used but I taste maple (lots of it) and whiskey (a little bit). As an added bonus the flavor of the Red Virginia Cavendish is noticeable underneath the topping! The aroma is as wonderful and inviting as any aromatic I've encountered.

Autumn Evening is everything that it says it is. The maple/vanilla/caramel sauce is never cloying. The red Virginias really shine midway through the bowl. This little tobacco is very forgiving but does have nicotine presence. Tread carefully.

A very simple enjoyable aromatic tobacco that deserves a simple 4 star review.

Let me start by saying that I do not smoke aromatic tobacco) (or at least, I didn't used to smoke aromatic tobaccos). I received a sample of this with a tobacco order that I placed and when I saw online that it is Cornell & Diehl's best selling blend I decided to give it a try. Not only did I find that I enjoyed the sample, but much to my surprise I actually ordered several ounces with my next order.

I have decided that I like this just the way it is early in the morning or right after lunch, but my favorite way to smoke this is in the evening mixed 1/3 Autumn Evening, 1/3 McClelland's Red Cake, and 1/3 McCelland's Stoved Virginia - this has become one of my very favorite after dinner smokes.

I don't yet know how this will hold up for me once the weather starts turning colder because that is typically when I want a darker English tobacco, but for now I am really enjoying something that I would not have ever dreamed of trying.

After watching the C&D videos on you tube this blend came out as one of the employees faves so on my next overseas order I decided to add a couple of tins to the list...Now Autumn is upon us I guess it was time to crack open a tin! First to hit you is the huge aroma of Maple syrup from the tin, it's quiet a fine cut which explains probably why the moisture content of the tobacco could be described as a tad on the dry side but that also meant that straight from the tin it packed and lit very well in my XL barling escort. Room note and taste was again all about the maple, the tobacco itself was heavy on the Virginia side but mouth and tounge bite was minimal. for the remainder of the day I could catch that maple aroma coming from my beard and tache which if you are a fan like me was most pleasant, even the family could detect it! I never found it over ashy but I did smoke it through a 9mm filter so that may have helped? I,ll certainly finish the tin and enjoy it although it won't be a 'go to' & the next tin will be aging untill next year. Would I buy again??? Probably not but glad I tried it.

I consider myself more of a Balkan/English smoker...with that being said, this tobacco is very good. I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews from my other Latakia brothers. I am finding that there are times when a great aromatic is just right up my alley and with the change of the seasons beginning to occur this one fit the bill.

The tobacco is quite aged and I'm not sure how I got my hands on such an old tin via online shopping. The tobacco is quite moist and very sweet right out of the tin. Strong smell of maple and vanilla. Loads and lights well and behaves quite nice....though you shouldn't puff hard regularly as you will get the burnt/charcoal flavor (as noted by other reviewers).

Flavor is delightful. Lots of maple and vanilla mixed with a decent natural tobacco flavor. Great balance and harmony to the flavors if sipped properly. Produces large amounts of silky smoke. I was surprised at how strong this blend was in regards to the nic. punch. Definite winner for C&D and will be smoked by me quite a bit this season.

OOOOh not my cuppa tea at all ... possibly being unfair to judge on a very dry sample but the presence of that maple syrup is all too obvious and pervasive in the pouch and on the palate. Burns well, nice cut -almost a shag - no bite or any other obvious defect but just too candied for my jaded tastes. Might be improved by bumping up with a straight virginia flake. Not enough to stand on its own merits though.

I am not buying into the hype on this one. Don't get me wrong, it is well constructed, smokes nice and the pouch note and room note were exceptional. One of the few tobacco's that had the right moisture level when I received it. But the taste was a bit of a let down - "Tastes the same as it smells" is the promise - I just didn't pick that up. AN UPDATE - Once I got over my perceived lack of maple flavor and took it for what it is, I found the red virginia tobacco to be quite remarkable. I may just have to keep this around!

When you open the tin there is an over-powering smell of butter. And, I can understand another reviewer's comparison to a pancake place and old cigarettes. The stuff lights up well and stays lit. The smoke is thick and there is some real nicotine in this "aromatic." During the smoke the butter flavor is more subtle than you might first think and the aroma of maple/butter is kept mainly for the room note. This is one of the few Virginia based tobaccos that the wife will tolerate. Now, I said tolerate, not love. The aroma becomes more of a pure tobacco about halfway down the bowl. The tobacco is of the usual hight quality that C&D is known for, but it is just the flavoring that keeps this one from being highly recommended. The ash is clean and the pipe is left dry. This will ghost your pipe so be prepared to dedicate a pipe to it while your supply lasts.

This is not a bad smoke. It is not cloying sweet, but does lack a richness I prefer in a aromatic blend. For me, a good aro is one I find hard to put down and have that potato chip desire to have more. This blend lacks that factor.

Yes it is a maple aromatic.yes it medium strength and yes the tin note is pretty good.But what really is great about this smoke is the spectacular Burely that rests just underneath.Not many aros in my opinion have such a nice real tobacco taste.

(I am a newer and irregular pipe smoker. My reviews are subject to my preferences and tastes and pipe smoking habits) In the tin this was a mix of light and dark brown ribbons. This smells like sweet maple syrup at the pancake house with a little hint of tobacco leaf in the background. The first few times I tried this blend all I got was a hot, ashy smoke. Which was upsetting, based on previous reviews and most of all the tin note. After a few more smokes I've discovered that this tin does have some maple flavour, but it is very mild and more of a synthetic 'Aunt Jemima' taste. I had to gently sip this blend to get the flavour out. Anything more and this became a steamy, flavourless smoke. Slow smoking, good packing and this can provide a mild, sweet, mapley experience, but it's a little too much work for such minimal rewards for me.

I have to disagree with those who claim that the taste is like maple syrup--more like maple extract. And yes, I was in the mood for pancakes afterwards because of the wonderful aroma. I made it through two tins, but then I got a slight peppermint taste. Perhaps the extract coming through? Since the fine folks at Cornell and Diehl's are only about an hour away, I really wanted to give this a higher rating. I plan to try more of their products as experience has shown that a company usually cannot be judged by one blend alone.

Sweet overtone, but a dry - almost harsh smoking tobacco. Was slightly bitter throughout. Wished for it to be a little more sweet, since I was in the mood for an aromatic. Basically not anywhere near a quality aromatic like Boswell's can blend. The room note was pretty much cigarette-like. I was not sad when the bowl pretty much came to an end...this was a 1oz free sample from Smokingpipes. Unfortunately I have an unopened tin too. Hopefully it somehow tastes better than the little baggie sample...

As far as aromatics go this is a pretty good blend. If there's on thing Cornell & Diehl always gets right its the quality of their blends. There is no Chemical taste to this blend. That being said there's not much taste at all. Right off the bat you get a nice maple taste when lighting but it seems like shortly after that all the casing burns off and leaves the flavorless, bland, cavandish. I would give it one star but the high quality of Cornell & Diehl leaves this tobacco with a very pleasant room note, cool even burn and no tongue bit. Though bland, unsatisfying, and disappointing.

Disclaimer! Autumn Evening (AE) would be my first Aromatic pipe tobacco experience. The tin note is quite pleasing. I was a cigar aficionado before my pipe conversion, so I place a small hygrometer in the tin of new pipe tobaccos, most are about 70% - 75% Relative Humidity (RH), AE was 75% RH. The tobacco felt very moist to the touch so I smoked AE after setting it in my tin drying box for 30 minutes, this brought the RH down to 65%. These relative humidity figures are just for my own comparison and contrast compulsions, nothing real scientific is going on. The taste was decent, I could detect maple and whisky, but none of the other claimed flavors; no citrus or fruity vibes.

I would say that the blenders at Cornell & Diehl hit their mark, it tastes sweet. It does not hearken my soul to an autumn evening, but it is a pleasant tasting tobacco that did not burn my tongue and AE did not give me a nicotine rush. Good delivery, but I think I will stick to the English blends. I am sure this tin of AE will make me a fast friend when I give it to someone who prefers aromatics.

I don't smoke aromatics often, and that is because I never get a good taste out of it. This blend seemed the same to me. Just an opinion but here's some detail from other views.

The strength was very light, which is expected and enjoyable if your reaching for this kind of blend. The flavoring was pretty good. It was a very maple/brown sugar casing that C & D very much pulled off. The room note was incredible. It would make even the non smoker want a puff.

The blend was very cool, for almost the entire smoke, until the end in which the casing seem to burn a bit hot. The only reason I don't give this 4 stars, is because of the lack of taste. Which I admit, is very hard to achieve. If you are an aromatic smoker, that is looking for a crowd please. Please enjoy this blend.

Ah! Pancakes and maple syrup! Enjoyable.

I am a devotee of pancakes, maple syrup and ice-cream! This tobacco is pleasant to my palate, nice in the room, but (regrettably) lacks ice-cream as it comes from C&D!! The sugars/flavouring are nicely "maple" without being over-the-top. Nice on the back-patio (and, back-palate) in the deepening twilight. As with any 'gentle' tobacco, don't force it otherwise it may bite unpleasantly!

Interesting tobacco. Open the tin and it smelled like I just walked into a waffle house. Seemed a bit dry in the tin, but when I packed it there was the spring back as if it had proper moisture. Room note was good. Taste seemed hit or miss for me. I will admit I was smoking it while hunting and it was a bit breezy out so I was spending more time trying to protect the pipe from the wind then studying the taste. I think I need to give it a few more chances. I will work through the tin, and then decide if I should buy more.

This blend doesnt taste like it smells. The maple note when smelled i very nice but you dont get any of it when smoked. When smoked you get a strong nutty taste from the red virginias. I do get that ashy taste about half way through the bowl and I'm sipping it. For anyone who can tolerate strong tastes and notes then this is a good morning smoke. I wouldnt recommend this to new smokers.

I like the occasional aromatic, but I'm not a great lover of aromatics. I think this is one of the reasons that I enjoy Autumn Evening so much and, conversely, why some folks dislike it: It doesn't really tickle the parts that true lovers of aromatics desire to be tickled, but it is, unabashedly and undeniably, an aromatic. So, if you're looking for the next "Middle Earth" or "Blue Note" (two of the best aromatics ever made, IMHO), then Autumn Evening won't do it for you. But if you're after an eloquent Virginia then the heavy casing will turn you right off.

Autumn Evening gives us a very pleasant VA that is, nevertheless, very heavily cased in a strong (I don't know why the CD people characterize it as "delicate"--there's nothing delicate about it) flavor. The casing is delicious and it lasts to the bottom of any sized bowl I've ever tried this in. The natural VA background remains throughout. And the nicotine is delightfully present from beginning to end. And SWMBO enjoys the aroma. What more could one ask for?

Despite its name, I enjoy Autumn Evening on cool mornings. The pancake flavor coupled with the undeniable nicotine hit make it a fine smoke when there's a fog on the ground and things are crisp and lovely. Great with a cup of coffee or tea. It can bite a teeny bit if disrespected, but it does take some doing to get it into that mood. I like it crunchy dry--moisture impedes its lovely burning characteristics. This is a good one for the cellar.

I began smoking aromatics when I first began smoking a pipe years ago. Since then I like many pipe smokers have moved on to English blends. Wanting a change of pace I was looking for a good aromatic that had flavor along with the aroma and this one has everything, a great aroma before lighting, a good flavor when lit and a pleasing room note.Autumn Evening leaves no goop in your pipe, it burns clean clear to the bottom of the bowl. Don't smoke it too fast it can bite but over all it is a tobacco I will buy again. This is a good solid aromatic that is a cut above the others.

Well I pretty much ONLY smoke aromatics.

Upon first opening my tin, I got punched in the face with Maple. As being Canadian, we do love our maple, and this was definitely the case. All I wanted to do was leave the tin open and eat the tobacco, but instead packed my pipe.

The tobacco was a bit dry straight from the tin, which I didn't mind since it's by weight, and I don't want water to be weighed. So I added a few sprinkled of distilled water until moisture was to y liking.

I didn't get any taste of any chemical products to keep moisture levels, which is good. The first few bowl burned quite hot and flavorless, I assume being a newbie and having a pipe barely broken in didn't help one bit. It got to the point where I didn't want to smoke it anymore, so i let it sit in a sealed jar for about a year.

Came back to it a year later, and the smoke was MUCH more pleasurable. I dried it out for 10min then 3 step gravity packed it. Set up in the yard and fired it up. It is now much better than last year. Maybe the ageing mellowed it out a tad, or that my pipe is comfortably broken in and i'm more experienced, but I like it much more than I did beofre.

This will be added to the rotation again.

Sad to say that I finished off the remains of my tin today...

SOLID aromatic. Nothing bad to say about this blend. No bite, little goop and gargle, too bad all aros can't be like this.

Good quality Virginia's with a pancake/maple syrup/caramel note to top it off. I'm not sure why but this blend truly does taste the best in the autumn. The popularity and good reviews from this site say it all. You cannot go wrong with this blend, buy some immediately!

Also I had my tin for a total of two years and the aromatic note never diminIshed whatsoever.

I bought 16oz tin of this and was quite excited to smoke it. I loved the idea, the tin note was not exactly fresh maple syrup but nice, really needed to dry this one out. I set out small amounts to smoke and left the overnight. The in my larger pipes the smoke as a bit hot, wet and I could not really catch maple. My wife smokes 2 of my smaller pipes, one a campus...not a great pipe but small bowl small bore and in that pipe it was a treat. Like all treats great once in awhile but not something for daily intake. I gave this 3 stars for its room note, tin note, and smoke after drying it out a lot and in the smaller pipes. I would have gone 2 had I based this on my experience with this in my larger pipes. Next time a small 50g tin will suffice.

Three years since reviewing this and three years more of experience has taught me several things and one thing that I have recently learned is the C & D can be widely inconsistent with their aromatics. The first time I smoked this blend it was so sweet I could hardly stand it, and was thankful that I didn't pay for the sample supplied to me directly from the factory with my first order.

I then sat puzzled after seeing so many people lay praise on this blend. I decided I needed to have another go at this one and ordered a couple more ounces. I was amazed at how good this next batch was. It was as all the people had described. A lighter topped blend, heavy in nicotine and burley richness so much so the underlying leaf is able to shine. It was really good. To my tastes this was a four star aromatic.

As I just finished this I thought an edit necessary as I thought I tanked this one. I am glad to see that I reviewed this objectively and only mentioned that subjectively that it was a two star blend.

So what to do now? I have a blend that at first I gave two stars, subjectively and three stars objectively, that I would now give four stars on both counts.

It seems hard to award what seems to be a complete lack of consistency on the part of C & D. I will now mention that I had the opposite problem with C & D's Berry Good. The first time I tried it, it was out of this world. A smooth smoking burley blend with a light touch of berry essence. I recommended the heck out of the blend and ordered another 8 ounces myself. The 8 ounces I had received was very different from the first batch I had tried. It was overly topped and like any other berry topped gooper.

I am really at a loss, I believe on the Autumn Evening I will let it rest with the three stars, but would give it four if I could be guaranteed that all would be like the last. I would go four on the Berry good if the opposite were true.

Part of me says that both should be rated at two stars as you don't know what to expect. Anyway, I am leaving this out there for anyone to be the judge themselves and to record my observations.

Still in my first year of pipe smoking, I have already jumped the aromatic ship in favor of the english blends, VAs and Vapers. Although my palate finds this blend to be far too sweet, I have nonetheless given this a three star rating as to avoid sinking the ship and adding to the ire of the passengers aboard.

I have read too many reviews of aro smokers furious from the condescension of those who no longer enjoy these type of blends yet still smoke them from time to time. To a large extent I feel this is justified as giving a blend like this a one star rating whilst a drugstore OTC aro carries an average of two distorts the objectiveness of the ratings. So out of this objectivity I have given this three stars as the leaf is quality and I do not experience that nauseous feeling I get from ingesting a chemical laden pulp.

Now to the subjective. I did find this to be far too sweet, but it is really the only bad thing I can say about it. So for the subjective I would give it two stars. One higher than an OTC chemical dump.

I agree with some of the more recent reviews of this blend, in that it smells like maple, but the taste maybe is just more of a general sweetness than particularly maple.

Opening the tin, the maple rushes and hits you straight away, doesn't smell like maple flavoured tobacco, smells like pure maple. Which is lovely!

It requires a bit of drying as its a "sticky" aromatic. But loads very easily and if sufficiently dried, it lights well.

The cased virginias are present are pleasant, but the taste isnt really maple, more a general sweet taste, which is still pleasant, and the taste carried on towards the end of the bowl, it didnt run away like many aromatics do after 3 puffs!

Just remember to puff gently, to much will cause it to get hot and you'll get tongue bite.

I guess i'd recommend because although to me it doesnt really taste like it says on tin, its sweet tasting and smells great. An enjoyer of aromatics would like it.

A very strong Virginia. Can bite if pulled. Use a small bore pipe and sip it slowly. Then it very nice, but strong. I don't taste much maple flavor, but I do smell it for hours after even though I don't smoke inside. Excellent burning qualities. I don't have a problem keeping it lit, and it lasts a while.

This blend was recommended by a friend with a real sweet tooth so I decided to try the bulk sampling of it. If you like maple and sweet aromatics I think you will definitely love this. I only smoke a small amount at a time and it takes care of the sugar fix. Very pleasant room note. Recommended for those with a very sweet tooth.

I smoked this tin over a few months. The first month or so, it seemed overwhelming with maple flavour. So much so that I wasn't really a fan. As time wore on it faded a bit and became very pleasant. There is enough nic in this to make me feel crook after 2 big bowls. I like this better than Mc c's town topic which was far too weak, but it could be better if the maple was a bit more subdued. I probably won't buy this again, but I did like it, particularly after a big dinner. If you like this type of tobacco, it makes a good dessert smoke.

Red virginia cavendish eh?

Well, it can bite a little if you hurry it, but with even decent technique, bite is no real concern.

I was sitting on the back porch smoking this last fall. My wife's friend remarked that it smelled like a vanilla cupcake, so... okay.

More moist in the tin than the typical C&D offering usually is, but nowhere near the level of goopy that Altadis' aros are famous for. Also, no PG that I could tell (I don't think C&D ever uses PG anyway), so no chemically taste. I think it tastes like waffles - mapley and buttery. Plus, the casing doesn't overpower the tobacco. Yes! You can taste tobacco! And it has nicotine too! Does it get any better than this for an aromatic?

Only thing is, since there's no preservative to speak of, once you pop the tin, I recommend to smoke it up relatively quickly... the casing will begin to fade after a couple weeks.

I needed a good aromatic while visiting my Dad and his wife. This did the trick. Recommended by a pipe shop in Carmel, CA, you could immediatley detect the maple casing when you opened the tin, which eventually ended up in my step-mother's hands as an aromatherapy device. It has an admirable aroma, but the casing is sometimes overpowering and can get a little boring. Also, it is not the cleanest smoke on the market. Very decent for an aromatic.

The maple flavoring came through in just the right amount for me. I really enjoyed this. I have to recommend a long stemmed pipe such as a churchwarden. This will help reduce the tongue bite that is so common with the aromatic tobaccos.

If one could eat tobacco, this would be the dessert. Delicious maple brown sugar odor wafts up from a freshly opened tin. One of these days I am going to actually taste it. Great for a party or when in mixed company. Now I know why Hef smoked Mixture 79!! Women love this blend. Autumn Evening is in a league of its own when compared with other similar aromatics. I like it a couple of times a month when my sweet tooth gets the best of me. Good quality leaf and the sweetest room note possible.

I enjoy an occasional aromatic, but was very disappointed with this tobacco. When you open the tin, the smell of maple is overwhelming to say the least. It packs and smokes well, but has way to much casing, and bites very easily.

The positive though, is that this tobacco has the best room note I've ever smelled. Although YOU probably won't enjoy this smoke, at least everyone around you will.

When i opened this tin the smell was really overwelming, so sweet i wanted to eat the tobacco:)

The truth is that this is my favorite aromatic. The taste is very nice, burns smoothly with no tongue bite at all, and after the bowl my mouth isn't smelling and tasting like asshes, but instead it tastes like caramel!!

My girlfriend loves the smell also, so i can smoke it near her! Really love it. Thanks Cornell & Diehl:D

I just got back into pipe smoking after a three year break. I have been smoking some lower end bulk tobaccos from a local shop. I stopped in the other day figured I would pick up something in a tin, I have read so many good reviews about AE. I got home popped open the tin and was very pleased, I did let it dry about 15min before packing it. It lit very easy and, stayed lit. Some wetness in the bottom of the bowl but, not to bad. Very pleasant taste and, room note. This is one that I will keep around.

The description and reviews caused me to venture for a tin of Autumn Evening. When I first received it I opened the tin and immediately wanted to take a bite of it. It smelled that good. The tobacco packs well and stays lit fairly well, but I had to relight twice after the first 2/3 of the bowl. The maple flavoring is more noticeable in the first half of the bowl, though I may have smoked it a little hot the last half. This is consistent after several bowls. Not a goopy aromatic, per se, but not completely clean, either. The first 2 bowls I smoked in a cob. I finished the tin in a basket briar that smokes well. My wife is my room note expert, and she enjoyed it. She kept saying it smelled like something to smoke at breakfast time. It's not joining my regular rotation, but I am cellaring 3 tins for future enjoyment. It would be a tin I might grab to go on a trip or vacation just to have something different to enjoy. A fine blend.

This was the last aromatic I bought before venturing into English blends. I was somewhat disappointed by it, but I keep it on hand when I want something different.

It's a very mild tobacco and it smells pretty good while burning. I've found that it doesn't bite if care is taken with it.

I like smoking this blend out of a cob pipe for a couple of reasons: I find that I don't usually smoke an entire bowl of it, and more importantly it leaves a VERY STRONG ghost. You should be aware of this. my experience is that it takes two or three bowls to get rid of the ghosting.

Other than that, it is what it is: a nice mild blend that's best enjoyed in moderation.

Tasted great, smelled wonderful, but gave me a terrible, very strange form of tongue bite. I think I might actually be allergic to whatever is produced when this tobacco burns. My lip split open on the inside in several places and I got irritated and/or bubbling portions of the inside of my mouth. My advice, if you feel a pin- prick sensation when smoking, throw out the bowl and wait a day. If your mouth feels fine then maybe try again. The pin prick sensation seems to precede my last two bad tongue bite cases.

This was a nice blend. I'm relatively new to pipe tobacco and come from this as a former cigarette smoker and longtime cigar smoker. I like the blend and so far, in my limited experience, this is one of the few blends that truly tastes like it smells.

That said, it's true to it's description and very maple flavored. At first, coming from a background of natural tobaccos it was a bit overpowering to have to the tobacco flavored like something else. The maple was very strong but it grew on me. My wife, who is very used to my cigars and natural tobaccos, didn't like the whole room "smelling like pancakes." She actually prefers the room note of a non- aromatic blend. For the most part, so do I.

I don't want to rate this too low because I did enjoy it for it was. I'm just finding that aromatics, as a whole, aren't my thing. There are some exceptions but this one was just too flavored for me. If you like maple, and you have non-smokers who don't appreciate full-strength room notes, this is an excellent blend. It burned cleanly to a fine grey ash and didn't leave anything in the bottom of my pipe. So it's recommended with the above caveats.

Ahh im not crazy about. It tastes very close to Captain black. It has a slight maple taste but no toabcco taste its to mild in a way. If your a new pipe smoker you would like this. If you want a better maple aromatic with more of a tobacco taste and natural maple insted of an artifical one i would try sutliff privte stocks maple street i give that a 4/4

Autumn Evening is my favorite example of this blender's excellent products that overcome the usual aromatic disadvantages of poor burning and/or tongue bite. The taste and aroma are excellent and it burns like a good regular tobacco.

Because I am a very mild tobacco smoker - English blends have always given me headaches and I've felt sick for hours after I've tried them every time (especially those with latakia) - my favorite everyday tobacco blend is Lane 1Q. It can get boring after a while because it has little flavor of its own, so I often smoke it with a good aromatic blended into it. A mixture that is 1/3 Autumn Evening and 2/3 Lane 1Q is just right for me and I love it. Everyone loves the aroma too, from what I hear.

I have found that Autumn Evening tobacco is pretty sensitive to its moisture level. The first can I bought was very dry [very unusual from this blender] and smoked very harshly and hot when I tried it by itself. I put about a tablespoon of distilled water in a large bottle cap on top of the tobacco in the can and let it evaporate and infuse into the tobacco for a few days. I then put the tobacco into a mixing bowl, tossed it around to spread the moisture, and it smoked much more to my liking after that.

Autumn Evening is one that I always plan to keep on hand to smoke myself and to share with friends.

I ordered 4 oz of this stuff, based on the reviews. Really sorry!

I'd hate to pan it completely. It did burn all the way to the bottom, so that's something. (Certainly better than a disgusting, gloopy, horrid tasting dottle.) So, it burns, but then, so do cigarettes. I felt as if I'd ripped open a few stale cigarettes and smoked them with a drop of maple syrup; "acrid" springs to the lips, as it were. Maybe some people like that, but I don't.

Comparing this to Three Blind Moose is irresponsible. I entertain some hope I can mix it with some Virginia ribbon and perique or SOMETHING else and make it smokable. Maybe some burley would help.

I'll give it two stars, reluctantly.

All in all, this is a rather tasty and very unique tobacco. However, two aspects of it seem to rather contradict its mellow and relaxing title of "Autumn Evening."

First, is the flavor. Although the maple flavor and scent are both pleasant enough, I for one do not think of something that hints of bacon, breakfast sausage, and pancakes as something I would want to smoke in the evening. Secondly, it packs a decent enough nicotine punch that you would most certainly not want to smoke this blend right before going to bed.

Personally, I think a more appropriate title would be "Autumn Morning." This blend would go wonderfully with a nice cup of coffee.

After trying several bowls of this stuff, i found that it is truly one of the rare blends that tastes exactly as it smells. Very delightful and more than just pleasant. I found myself wanting more of its sweet maple flavor and medium bodied smoke that is delicious to say the least. Even the nicotine content kept me interested throughout the entire bowl. Not a bad blend and could easily include this into my daily rotation of aromatics, price is good too. Four stars for this blend because i could smoke it all day.

You don't have to wait for autumn or for the evening, although the name evokes pipesmokers' heavenly time of year. This blend is satisfying any time of the day in any season. It is a simple recipe: high quality red virginia and a unique casing. Others describe it as maple, but I think it is more like creme brulee.It is packed so tightly in the can that it almost has to be dug out with a shovel. It maintains just the right moisture level for many months. Burns like a high quality English, leaving a wisp of white ash. And the aroma is delightful. It is not complex: If you like the taste and smell you can smoke it forever; it does not change. I have a tendency to smoke too much of this blend too often--and after I wait awhile I return. It is an intimate smoke. It creates a warm, pleasant atmosphere and is just right for reading or walking. The picture on the can is cute and cozy. This has been described as the best aromatic ever. I agree.

Initial impression:

"Not so much."

I want this to be a home run aromatic for C&D. The concept is there. Love the soul of the idea. The pouch note is perfect. The feel of the tobacco is right on. Lighting was easy. One match (after the char) did the whole bowl. Vitamin N buzz was minor, which I prefer for an evening contemplative session. And that's about where the love ended for me. We all know that any number of things can affect tobacco after it leaves the maker. So, this is not my ultimate judgement on Autumn Evening.

I am going to try a few more bowls, try a different pipe, then cellar it and come back to it later. I bought this from the local tobaccy man. Got it bulk, and, as some others have stated, that might be the problem. I am also going to buy a pouch/tin of it and see if I get a different experience.

There was hardly any continuance of the maple-love in the taste. The same goes for the presence of the maple-love in the room note - barely. The taste was flat with far-cry hints of maple.However, it did have spikes of Virgina's tang, and we all know how daddy likes that.

Can only say "give it a shot and tell me if I got a bad batch."

I will be updating this review for sure.

Update 06/28/10: I'm bumping the rating to a 2.5 stars. After a little drying time, and adjusting my smoking to a sipping approach, things have improved. But the tobacco still has no body. Tastier with no body.

Some undefinable aspect of this blend is extraordinarily comforting and pleasing to me, so bear that in mind. I was biased the moment I lit it up. As numerous people have noted, this is one of those few elite aromatics that tastes the way it smells. And what a taste it is! Autumn Evening captures the spirit of maple syrup; it is deeply sweet and luscious - hedonistic, even - without being cloying. There is not a lot of forward tobacco flavor here, but this is not a thin aromatic.The VA flavor is far in the background, but its structure plays a role throughout the bowl, and is unmistakable in its authority. This is a beautiful smoke. Very smooth, very little bite, and warm and comforting as a maple wood fire in a Vermont fireplace. If you like straight tobacco and you have a sweet tooth once in a while - and you like pancakes with maple syrup - try this.

A very nice maple aromatic. Probably the best of the C&D aromatics. Not flavored on the usual black cavendish, but it has some real colored tobaccos. Maple is one of my favorite flood flavors, so this biases me, but if you want to try C&D aro's start with this one.

Of all the tobaccos that I have tried, Autumn Evening is by far my favorite. It truly is the perfect blend to smoke on an Autumn evening whilst sitting by the fire. However I do smoke it year round. The maple taste is very strong, yet there is no hint of the artificial "chemical" flavor that accompanies most flavored blends. The room note is probably the best of any tobacco I've had. I cannot recommend this blend enough.

Boy...great aromatic! If you're looking for a mellow, sweet-smelling aromatic you can do worse than Autumn Evening. Despite what it says on the can, I don't taste any maple whatsoever (I'll leave that to Town Topic), but I do get a really nice buttery caramel flavor. The tobacco itself seems pretty nice for an aromatic--moist but not at all sticky or wet. I get so tired of aromatics that are so sticky you could tar a road with them.

I am still in search of an aromatic that has some real tobacc flavor and nuance with the addition of complimentary flavoring. So far, this has been a elusive beast to find. And Autumn Evening isn't it either.

This tobacco comes closer than any other that I have tried though. I will give it credit for that. My quesion is, Why do all aromatics have to be made of whimpy tobacco with little character? Surely some master blender out there can manage to find tobaccos of character and strength to match to a complimentary additional flavor without overwhelming the weed contained within the tin. I just don't get it.

There is some va strength here and some tobacco flavor, but the maple used is over the top and klls most of the enjoyment. There are no nuances here at all.

I will stick to my vapers, english, and burley blends for now. But, I'm sure that sometime soon I will be hearing the siren song of another aromatic and I will give it another go.
