Jean Hersholt was a Danish actor who starred in a radio show about a Minnesota physician named "Dr. Christian" from the late Thirties until the early Fifties. The show was so popular that six spin-off movies were made in the Forties (I own one on DVD), and it was briefly a TV show in 1956, the year Hersholt died. It took place in the quaint hamlet of "River's End," where the quiet and kind Dr. Christian got into many "adventures," always helping the townspeople out along the way.
Hersholt was a passionate pipe smoker, and the enduring popularity of his radio show led to the development of Country Doctor pipe tobacco in (I think) the early Fifties. That's Hersholt on the tin, lighting his pipe. Over the decades, Country Doctor remained sporadically available, and if one looked hard enough, you could still find it online in the late Nineties in a 12 oz. tub. House of Windsor then acquired the rights to this fine old blend, and it has enjoyed a renewed popularity in recent years.
Country Doctor is often compared to Revelation, and that comparison is apt. Burley, Virginia, latakia, and perique are expertly blended for a rather stout smoking mixture, heavy on the nicotine. Its tin aroma is divine; you can smell the straight tobacco along with perique, latakia, and a faint berry topping. Most inviting.
Upon lighting, the smoke is piquant, but as you settle into the middle third of the pipe, burley takes the dominant role, with the Virginia, latakia, and perique staying present throughout. Bite is minimal, and there is a delightful, smokey richness that suits my palate perfectly. Relights help reveal the evolving flavor the tobaccos, but you will go through few matches as this is a remarkably easy-burning smoke. I highly recommend this for fans of latakia, perique, or burley. This tobacco is versatile and should appeal to a wide variety of pipe smokers.
Easily one of the best old-style blends on the market today, and (with Briggs and Revelation) a testament to the quality of HOW's burley offerings.

This blend is no longer produced by Philip Morris, and is now being made by House of Windsor. I recently purchased tins of all of the House of Windsor re-released tins featured in the Summer 2003 P&T magazine. Country Doctor has easily moved into the top-5 of my all-time favorites! I was shocked by this, but what a blend it is! This tobacco features wonderful cube cut Burley in the foreground, with Virginia, Latakia and Perique in the background. There is some sort of elegant fruit topping that adds a sweetness that is indescribably delicious.
Country Doctor can be puffed on all day with no bite and no palate overload. The Latakia and Perique are so far in the background that they can easily be overlooked. Yet, there is just enough condimental leaf there to rev up this blend.
The aroma in the tin and at the match is also heavenly. My palate craved this stuff and I smoked three consecutive bowls while recently watching a 2 hour movie on the tube.
And fear not you nicotine addicts (of which I am one), this has enough to keep you happy.
I cannot tell you just how highly I regard this Country Doctor. He'll get plenty of visits from me!

The mildly smoky, woody Cyprian latakia and raisiny, very lightly spicy perique are mere condiments here, but they add sufficient bass notes. The earthy, nutty, toasty burley is the main star, with the grassy, barely citrus sweet Virginia playing back up. There is a sweet topping that I cannot identify. At times, I get a slightly sour tangy taste mixing in with the sweet, which may come from the burley. Has a mild nic-hit. It's a decent smoke, but burns a little fast and rather hot half way down the bowl, though it avoids biting you. Has a fairly consistent flavor, and a decent after taste. Could be an all day smoke. Sutliff makes a match blend of this that is better with more burley taste and a cooler burn rate.

So here I was the other day, driving around Las Vegas and as I was sitting at a red light I look over and see an old Smoke Shop, I try to hit up every one I see hoping for a long lost goldmine. On a whim I turned in and entered the store, in a ray of sunshine, sitting on a dusty shelf staring at me is a filled shelf of vintage House of Windsor 10 ounce tins! I purchased Barking Dog and Country Doctor to start leaving Revelation, Field and Stream etc for next time.Opening the bulging tin the aroma of berries and matured tobacco, my preferred traditional OTC cuts (cubed and short ribbon ala Carter Hall) in various dark shades of both brown and black leaf. I immediately packed a bowl as the leaf was dry but not crumbling and settled in for a long smoke. Wow I have not smoked CD in a decade (or more) and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it for the simple OTC cut and flavor yet also complex. Aging has done wonders both on lack of bite and sweetness. I tasted the perique more when it was fresh but it's a Burley forward blend and as others have stated the condiments are there in salt and pepper amounts which is great. HOW was never known for it's leaf quality but maturing the Virginia has really elevated CD and I truly wish it was still available, the matches never give me the same satisfaction (Edgeworth match excluded) and the tin art was magnificent. I will purchase all he has left and put the other tins up on Ebay for the price I paid ($20 for 10 ounces) so others can try and enjoy these lost HOW blends.

To me it tasted like and English blend with a very light topping of cherries. I mean a very light topping of cherries as in one drop per two ounces. Best of the English blends I've tried, but I am a fan of aromatics and PA.

I got a generous sample of this from a friend - about 2 oz. I have been smoking through it.
This is a very pleasant burley forward blend with traces of latakia and perique in "salt and pepper" mode. They enhance the experience but you don't notice them if you are not looking for them. There are occasional bright Virginia notes and a mild fruit topping that I think is a berry of some sort. This could be a plum contribution of the perique, but I think it is a topping.
As the bowl progresses, the burley is more dominant, and I could believe there is a little DFK in there. There is a slight bitter toward the end of the bowl.
I like it, and I find it a very good smoke. It is not exciting or a flavor powerhouse, and it is not the sort of thing people rave about in one forum or another. In my rating system, a 3 is something that could be my regular smoke if options were limited. This is a solid 3, and it is one of those "all-day" smokes from a different era.

I'm with Pipestud on this one. The tim aroma is absolutly wonderful. This is one that I have been smoking all day for the last 3 days. I belive this is one blend that I will always keep on hand.

Update. Still a very nice smoke, but it tends to run a little harsh at times and so is a little unpredictable. I'll keep some around, but for me, in the HOW line, Revelation gets the nod.
I can only echo what most of the previous reviewers have said and perhaps add a comment or two. I am smoking a pipe full of this tobacco as I write and all I can say is: it almost didn't happen.
After reading the reviews here I just had to try some of the HOW blends and CD was one of the first I tried. The first four bowls, tried in a couple of different briar pipes, just didn't work. I found it rough, smokey and minimally flavorful. Then I reread the reviews and noted that the first reviewer, in passing, commented on not overpacking the pipe. I've been smoking a cube cut simple burley tobac for years (Tinderbox Blend #2) and when I'm done it my pipe looks like it's been loaded with an industrial press. My idea of lighting said mixture is to not "touch the match", but to set it on fire. Ok, Ok, I know, some really bad habits there......
So I sat and carefully underpacked the fifth bowl, and lit it by just barely touching the match to it. WHOA!!!! As one reviewer said, "this is definitely your fathers tobacco". It has that wonderful old time pipe smell that comes from a burley blend that has a bit of mild topping and just the right amount of other leaves mixed to give it balanced and mild flavor. For me it smokes dry and cool. I take care with relights and make an effort to smoke it very slowly. Any regular burley smoker should try this. It's now in my regular rotation.

As a fan of Barking Dog and Union Leader, I felt I should locate some Country Doctor and have a go. I must say that HOW blends are not easy to come by in Canada, so I turned to an American agent for my purchases. Firstly, I love the packaging. I am not old enough to have experienced much of the tobacciana of yesteryear but when blends arrive wrapped in a foil pouch and campy box you can call me sold. Pouch aroma is lightly fruity with a hint of pungency, likely eminating from the odd strand of Perique contained within. There is a goodly amount of color present in the blend and the cut is rough and tumble. This is assuredly your father's tobacco. At lightup, initial flavor is somewhat muted but quickly morphs into a solid burley ride, with traces of virginia and perique. If there is latakia in this mix, I never tasted it. Nothing overtly wild occurs during the smoke, but the flavor is fine and spicy. I like to smoke this when fly fishing as it burns well and makes me nostalgic(did I mention the foil pouch?). Worth the search.

Someone said this would be their "desert isle" tobacco. I wouldn't go that far but I do like this very much. It is a good medium English type blend without any soapy taste or burning twig flavors that sometimes are associated with that type of blend. I do like Revelation a little better than Country Doctor due to relative strength issues. On the strength meter I would give C.D. an 8 and Rev. a 6 or 7 out of ten.

Obviously based on a rehydrated older tin; the Perique and VAs are pretty much faded away and the Burley nearly as much so, leaving the mild Latakia as the main note. Still well-balanced and easy to smoke, with the mildest of berry topping left. Unsurprising like a slightly faded version of the replacement CD blend (reviewed on that thread).

To be fair I will preface my review by saying I'm not a fan of Latakia - even in small doses. That said, I agree with most of akaiser77's review on this unusual tobacco. Like so many of its long running, traditional American counterparts, you can usually only buy it in the big 14 oz can - not much good if you end up not liking it! Personally, I didn't and as dry as this concoction was it eventually succumbed to fungal rot after sitting for several years before it tossed it. I kept the can of course, mainly because of the quaint art work and in respect for an old time icon in American pipe smoking history.

First bowl, smoked in a Stanwell Saturn
Pouch aroma: light fragrance, sweet, smelling vaguely of brown sugar and figs
Consistency: light and springy – do not overpack
1st puffs: very mild, no bite, sweet and rich
Smoke character: medium thickness, easy to keep lit, just a few tamps
2nd half: the nic kick is there, especially toward the bottom, but nowhere near as intense as Big n' Burley. The flavor strengthens, sweet burley, with some emerging muted spiciness and vague fruitiness. Very pleasant.
Aftertaste: Sweet, figgy and not at all unpleasant
Overall: A good, satisfying smoke. I have not tried Revelation or Union Leader yet, but this one is a keeper. Not regular rotation material, but nice to have on hand.
*Note: I smoked the Altadis match I got from pipesandcigars.com. I do not know how it really compares to the HoW version. Also, thank you to akaiser77 for the notes on Jean Hersholt.

Just finished up a 2 oz tin. No previous experience with this one but I also recently smoked Revelation, and as hard as I tried to avoid it, I couldn't help thinking of this one as Revelation Light.
In this one, the condimental tobaccos were so faint that I really couldn't taste them. Perhaps they did something to cool or slightly spice the smoke but I tasted mostly burley, with some occasional VA sweetness and the topping. The flavoring was definitely on the same fruity side as Revelation and really didn't detract from the blend, as flavorings often do. This was predominately burley. It was a good smoke but this one threatened to bite me at the slightest provocation. I found that I had to slow my puffing cadence to the point that it was an effort to continue - I kept losing my relaxing, calm state of mind.
A pretty good tasting smoke whose demise I do not mourn terribly. Revelation was better, IMHO. This is, however, superior to the various "matches" of this blend that Sutliff has produced - no big surprise there.

now this one i should be careful reviewing,, i bought an estate sale pipes from ebay and a fourteen ounce tin was thrown to the lot, i have to be honest when i say i was attracted to the name as a veterinary pathologist the doctor title got my interest "little that i knew, how old this tin was" i just popped the seal and it is 1967,,good LORD. this aging must have done alot to the flavoring however simply the fresh smell of figs and fermented dates slapped me in the face. the virginia and perique taste is obvious non the less hints of latakia is very weak, to be honest the latakia and oriental are weakly participating still it is a perfect blend, burns smoothly and finely with a reasonable strength and acceptable room note. if the new batches is any where near this one then it shall be my all day smoke

Along with Revelation this is one of the better blends by HOW, simple and satisfying. I can't tast the latakia much, but the perique is noticable although subtle. This is another blend where, after I'm done smoking, I go outside for a short time and then come back to savour the pungent but pleasant aroma.
It can bite if smoked too hard/quick, but it packs, lights and smokes very well.If you want a decent "drugstore" blend, you have to try this one.

Are you an aromatic smoker that's looking to get started with an English blend? This may be the tobacco for you. It's kinda a cross between the two. Has a nice friendly aroma but a little of the English taste too. Give it a try. Pretty darned good. You'll have to hunt pretty hard for the Latakia flavor but it's in there. If you can't find it, try blowing the smoke through your nose. Very Mild. I could smoke this all day long.

I recently purchased a 2 oz. tin of Country Doctor. I haven't smoked this stuff since I started to smoke a pipe 40 years ago. Anyhow, having no past memory of this tobacco, today I find it a pleasant full flavor smoke. Although I have many pipes, I prefer a corncob over most of my collection. CD smokes excellently in a cob. I could taste no topping, and I didn't feel any nicotine punch, also no bite.
A nice, nostalgic trip into the past. Recommended as a nice change of pace.

Along with Revelation, I liked this of all the HOW blends. The tin aroma seems simpler and fruitier than Revelation, but other wise smoked very similarly. Good burley flavor, mostly plain tobacco with occasional hint of the tin scent coming in once in awhile. Packaged with that beautiful portrait of Jean Hersholt, the movies "Country Doctor," this one is worth trying for both nostalgia and real smoking's sake.

As I recall some couple of years ago one of the Pipe/Tobacco magazines had a subscription offer whereby you got a sampler of tins of 5 different HOW blends along with your subscription. Thankfully, I loved the magazine because the HOW tobacco really didn't seal the deal as far as I was concerned. That said, of the 5 small soup sized cans that came, Country Doctor was the last one I tried, all the previous ones really didn't do a thing for me. I might have been saving the Country Doctor in the hopes it'd save me if the HOW tobacco's got any worse. This one of the bunch was perhaps the best of the lot, and maybe only because of my fondness for a blend of Virginia, Latakia, and Perique. The last two were in relatively tiny amounts too, far less than I now enjoy in other blends. This might have been an outstanding blend in its day, today its nothing to get excited about. I didn't finish the can.

An excellent blend, half-way between an aromatic and an English. I was intrigued by the name ("Country Doctor") and the hokey picture on the can, so I just had to try it. Turned out to be a very good smoke. Some nicotine punch, mild on the tongue, and with a bare hint of that English spiciness. This is a good choice for the aromatic smoker looking for something different that is substantial, but without the unpleasant characteristics of the English blends. It is a perfect all-day or frequent smoke.
With Country Doctor billowing from my bowl, I see myself at the racetrack, straw skimmer atop my head, as I puff away on a straight briar. The humidity is marked by the growing stains under my arms, but the daily racing program makes a convenient fan for my face. The young lady accompanying me sports a wide brimmed hat, with a white lace band and a navy blue satin bow. The clouds of smoke I send into the air are forgotten as the field thunders by, my horse on the rail, gunning for the win.

I've been smoking some of HoW's blends for the last year, Revelation, Barking Dog and Country Doctor; Country Doctor is my favorite of the bunch. I'm mostly an English / Balkan smoker and this is only an occasional blend for me.
The mixture is mostly cube cut burley with some VA and Latakia mixed in along with a teeny bit of Perique for spice. There is a pleasant aroma from the fruity topping but it is not overpowering nor does it add much to the flavor of the smoke. Packing is a matter of dipping your bowl in and then gently tamping for the first light. This burns slow and is quite easy on the tongue; alas there is not enough flavor to keep me very interested. When my tin runs out I won't be buying any more. 3 out of 10 Stars.

One of House Of Windsors best. Every one want's Revelation- and everywhere it's sold out. I think Country Doctor is a better blend. How has its issues... the paper tins, the tobacco dust- But their tobacco is a fair price. this reminds me of one of my favorite Dunhills Early Morning Pipe (As Others Have Said) But it is ALL AMERICAN and cheaper. It also doesnt stain my mouth as bad with leftover odors. Give it a whirl folks.

Essentially a weaker version of Revelation. Same topping, same tobaccos in a weaker blend. If you are nicotine sensitive and Revelation sits you on your ass, this may be something you could become more accustomed to. Personally, I think Revelation has a richer flavor and is better.

Like many, I tried the trio of re-released old time blends from HOW: Revelation, Barking Dog, and Country Doctor. Barking Dog was impossible to keep lit and tasted like charcoal brickets, Revelation tasted mainly like perique and knocked me out with it's nicotine punch, but Country Doctor really captured my fancy. I like to think of it as America's answer to Dunhill Early Morning Pipe. It starts out tasting of burley/va then finishes off with a nice taste of latakia. The taste is fairly full from the first light, but it never overpowers. Nicotine is a bit high but not overpowering. It tastes like tobacco; I can't taste the topping at all. It has a traditional burley aroma which I like, but non-smokers might find it too much like cigarettes. It tastes best in my Kirsten, so probably a meer would be good as well. I am prevented from smoking it more than I would like as I find it a bit abrasive on my throat and tongue.

My first of the HOW blends, and a great start. This is a nice medium english- Latakia, va, & burley very noticable- with an interesting berry (?) topping. Can't find perique anywhere- But hey, not a prob. Not depending on the description, going only by the "Country Doctor" monicer- I sat and enjoyed a great smoke, boosted by some tweaking of my imagination for some historical nostalgia.... For the price, try some while listening to some old radio programs. Great!!!

05242006 I purchased a pouch of Country Doctor from a tobacco shop in Tinley Park, Illinois on a whim. The price was right, $3.30, and I had read favorable reviews. Country Doctor appeared to be everything it was said to be. It did seem a bit too dry in the pouch, but packed very well in my pipe. A charring light, a tamp, and on more match, and we were set to go. With only the occasional tamp, Country Doctor burned slowly and cooly throughout the entire bowl. The tobacco flavors presented themselves very well. Occasionally spicy, but mild, and very flavorful. I smoked Country Doctor in a cob, and then in a briar with no bite. I might not recommend Country doctor to the beginner, but I would definitely recommend it to both the English blend and the aromatic smoker who was looking for a change of pace smoke. Country Doctor could easily be an all day smoke, and has earned a place in this pipester's tobacco rotation. ================================= 06122006 The more I smoke this , the more I like it.

Companionable, second in my preferences to Revelation. Having worked through Barking Dog, Briggs, Model, Union Leader, Country Doctor and Revelation, Revelation and CC are numbers one and two overall, but neither will be regulars in my rotation. Not bad, actually pleasant, and just an occasional interest.

The appearance in the tin is not good either. Half of it looks like something someone swept from the floor with a broom; half cross-cut leaf and half tobacco powder.
I could not find almost no Latakia and Périque. VA was only present in small doses: that leaves alot of Burley, soaked in flavour and PG. You should puff this one slowly and with caution, because it burns like MacBaren.
On the upside, it does have a decent dose of nicotine and it does make an ok outdoor smoke. Two stars, max..

A similar tobacco to Barking Dog, but much more burley-oriented. Don't be fooled by the various tobaccos in the recipe, because the dominating taste (compared to Revelation or Barking Dog) is nutty, earthy and grassy: yes, the familiar cube-cut burley at its best.
It is a tasty blend, but not as rich or interesting as the two other House of Windsor blends I have mentioned above, or as smooth as other burley-heavy tobaccos like Barbary Coast or Edgeworth Slices. Towards the middle of the bowl and onwards, you can actually get some of the dreaded burley bitterness.
Overall a good, stout (I smoke it in little bowls) blend: quite simple and uncomplicated, and enjoyable. But there are better products by the same maker, which offer me a more balanced experience. Worth a try, though.

There are some tobaccos you like from the first puff and there are some tobaccos that grow on you. CD fell in the latter category for me. I wasn?t particularly impressed with the first bowl I smoked but I didn?t give up on this tobacco. Ensuing bowls grew more tasteful and pleasurable. This tobacco can be smoked without any concern for how fast you puff as it has no bite whatsoever. I call such tobaccos like this as well as MacBarren London Blend ?drinkable.? This is a ?drinkable? smoke. I am not a fan of Latakia or Perique in heavy doses but these stay well in the background and only modestly come to the forefront from time-to-time. They say nicotine is addictive. I found Country Doctor the most addictive tobacco I have smoked so far out of about 25 blends. A great all day long smoke, especially for burley lovers!
10/12/2004 - Update. My second tin, purchased from a different etailer and months after the tin my review was based on, was a big disappointment. The second tin was not nealy as good as my first tin of CD. See my review for Barking Dog that may explain this disparity. Something is amiss at HOW.

I received a tin of Country Doctor by House of Windsor with a pipe I purchased as a "complementary" bonus. I put it aside for awhile, but finally got around to opening and trying it. My first pipeful was quite pleasant for the first part of the bowl, but by midway, had turned a bit spicy and harsh. Still, I thought I was onto something good. Later, I tried it in a Calabash Meershaum, to try the full flavor of the tobacco. Again, it started out pleasant, but became overpowering, hitting me with a nicotine overdose that took the entire evening to rid myself of. WOW...what a buzz, and an unpleasant aftertaste that would not go away. I thought, perhaps, I had simply overdone it, and decided on one more try. I chose one of my favorite pipes, a Ser Jacopo Maxima, and again lit up. This time, less than a third of the bowl through, I could no longer take the overpowering strength of the nicotine, and dumped the bowl. I almost had to sanitize the pipe, the aftertaste was so strong! I will NOT be trying this again, and threw the remainder in the trash. Most of my reviews have been quite positive, and I have a eclectic taste in tobaccos, but this does NOT fit into my rotation, from this point on. I cannot recommend this on any basis.

A fine "American English" blend. My sample smokes cleanly with very little nip. Relative smoothness through out. It is bold tasting with peppery, nutty and grassy flavors. There is just a bit of tang from oriental tobacco.
A bit deeper and flatter tasting towards the mid to bottom of the bowl - and a tad bit more harsh - though still pleasant. Near the very bottom the orientals again get a bit citrus like (as is their custom).
For as much as I like English blends, I don't tend to smoke them all day or every day. Though if I were to smoke like that, this could be a regular.
I think I still may personally prefer the C+D English style blends which also use Burley and Perique, but this is a good alternative and close contender.

I smoked this about six months after having smoked Revelation, and could tell very little difference between the two blends. Like Revelation, CD came extremely dry in the tin, and I had to smoke carefully in order to avoid tongue bite as I smoked. I occasionally caught a whiff or a taste of the Latakia in the blend, but it definitely stayed in the background in this VA and Burley-laden blend. I regret that I cannot enjoy the room note of this blend as I smoke, as I suspect it is quite nice and would evoke memories of days gone by, when it was a common occurrence to pass a pipe-smoker on the street and become briefly lost in the wonderful aroma he left in his wake.
While I am definitely grateful to see these classic American mixtures resurrected, I prefer blends that are heavier on the Latakia and thus I don?t think the House of Windsor blends will become a regular part of my rotation, except maybe as an occasional summertime blend. A nice, dry smoke all the way down.

I really wanted to like this blend and was very happy with my first smoke. It was a "yummy" tobacco; there seemed to be a very subtle topping. It is finicky to pack though, and the taste would get more acrid with every relight. When I would go on to a second bowl of the evening, my head would ache and I would start to feel slightly sick to my stomach. At first I just attributed it to my second or third triple martini. But then I read somewhere that Burley has double the nicotine of that found in other tobaccos. So I did an experiment. On several evenings, and completely martini-free, I sampled the good Doctor. It didn't take long before my pulse was pounding--not an encouraging sign. Soon my tongue was bitten, and my head ached (and I still was trying to figure out how to keep it lit). The Doctor was more Kevorkian in nature than healer. I go for taste and overall experience. Mr. Nick O' Teen (as some have referred to it) is not welcome in my piping adventures. As soon as my father-in-law came for a visit I let the good doctor make a house call--out of my house and over to his.

I love the idea of bringing back these old brands.In a tribute to the past I smoked this in a large old Kaywoodie.The artwork on the packaging is pure nostalgia and every pipesmoker should try these blends at least once.Upon opening I found rather dry pleasant smelling cubed burley.It's about as easy to load as a tobacco could be.I see many similarities to Field and Stream in this blend, that being one of them.Those who are fans of F&S would no doubt enjoy this too.Upon lighting; the casing was quite noticeable.It also had that certain after taste which I don't appreciate.It got much better however about a quarter of the way down the bowl.It burns cool and the tatse is'nt bad at all.With that said,if blends like this were the only ones avaiable I'm not sure I would smoke a pipe.It makes me very thankful to be a pipe smoker today instead of in the 40's and 50's when these blends were most popular. With access to great tobaccos like Greg Pease,Dunhill's and McClellands blends this almost seems a little outdated.For a step back in history though,it's just what the doctor ordered. Prep

This stuff will be perfect for the hot weather months. I seriously can't understand why some blends that are out of this world (such as this) are discontinued , while other horrid blends continue selling for all eternity (half-n-half, boredom stiff, low IQ, take your pick!) I really love the berry topping on this stuff which doesn't happen too often. The perique was an interesting touch as well. This will nip if provoked, but then most of the better blends do. Nice indeed!

Right now I?m alternating between G&H?s Bob?s Chocolate Flake and HW?s Country Doctor. Basically, I?m using Country Doctor (CD) as my all day choice and treating myself to Bob?s Chocolate Flake (BCF) once a day.
CD is one of those old fashioned American blends that reminds me of Grandpa puttering in the garage on Saturday mornings back in the 50?s and 60?s. It is frequently called a drugstore blend, but in my neck of the woods (Westchester county, NY, about 50 miles north of Manhattan) the only pipe tobaccos one ever sees in drug stores are stale pouches of Captain Black, Half & Half, Prince Albert, and Borkum Riff along with those store brand bulk pouches of God-knows-what. So it took some time to find CD on the internet and receive a 4 oz. tin in the mail.
The aroma and texture upon opening the tin is rough but pleasant. The tobacco is cube cut and dryish, and the casing is fruity in an old-lady-coffee-table-candy kind of way. One does not get the impression of highest quality tobaccos here. But the over-all impression is positive. Thank goodness it?s not vanilla Cavendish!
CD packs in the bowl like a dream; just right every time, even if you plunge the pipe into the tin and scoop the tobacco into the bowl with your index finger (like Grandpa did). It?s dry and separate, but not dry as in brittle and stale. Lighting is a snap. One match will do it, but I always use two just to make sure.
The smoke is even and smooth, strong yet not overpowering. There is just enough latakia and perique to be barely noticeable, and the casing does not get in the way of the tobacco flavor. This tobacco is good; very good. That being said, it must also be mentioned that it is somewhat rough. But not in a bad sense; rather in the same sense as certain beloved English cask-conditioned ales. Maybe a better word than rough would be ?rustic?. The flavor is strong and consistant down the bowl, getting perhaps a little more piquant toward the bottom. It burns well, seldom needing to be re-lit. There is no juicy gurgling in the bottom of the bowl, and when carefully smoked, the dottle is small and fairly dry.
One negative is that on those occasions when it is necessary to let the pipe go out and cool, on re-lighting later on, the taste is rather acrid like other less expensive tobaccos. A re-light of a cooled bowl brings all the roughness mentioned above to the fore. So if I fear that I may not have time to smoke an entire pipe, I?ll just fill the bowl half way and knock out the leftovers when I?m done.
I am a somewhat brisk smoker, no doubt from long experience with tobaccos that go out if you ignore them for more than a fleeting moment or so. Yet even at a brisk pace CD does not wax hot; it remains cool and does not bite at all. It also stays lit so that relights are seldom necessary. Therefore, it is a good tobacco to help one develop a relaxed, slow smoking speed. It?s also good when engaged in conversation. You can talk for a bit and come back without fear of a dead pipe. All in all, CD is a good every day tobacco that satisfies and leaves room in your heart for special treats like G&H?s Bob?s Chocolate Flake.

(8-9-03) From the very first bowl of this wonderful old tobacco, I was intrigued by something that kept bringing back to smoke another bowl. I recently finished smoking fifteen straight bowls of this with no other tobaccos in between. I am truly hooked on this stuff! I still don't know what it is that intrigues me but the more I smoke this tobaccy, the more I want to smoke it. The aroma upon openning the container is simply yummy. Obviously there is some kind of fruity topping in this blend but it is not too sweet or yucky and it doesn't carry through to the smoking experiance. It is a cube and ribbon cut tobacco, about 50% dark brown with a little black and 50% light brown, tan and a touch of yellows. It packs easily and care should be taken not to pack this stuff to tightly.
Without question the burleys dominate the flavor profile. The virginias, latakia and perique are always there too but never up front. Like I said, the burleys dominate but as each of the others tobaccos take their turn trying to come out, it creates a flavorful and nicely complex smoking experiance. There is a fair amount of nicotine present and this tobaccy does get a little spicier as the bowl smokes down, but plesantly so. It is never bitter! Note: I am an aggressive smoker and so far, I have never been bitten by this tobaccy.
I'm not sure how long this blend has been around and yes, I guess it can be considered a high-end drug store blend but who cares. This tobacco has with-stood the test of time. It's still here and from what I can see, it's making a strong come back against all those overly priced boutique blends that many of us charish and talk about all the time. If you haven't already done so, give this blend a try. No matter if your favor virginias, english, balkans, latakias, etc. you won't be sorry! This is good stuff and a definate all day smoke, if your looking for one!
I favor smoking this blend in a meerschaum pipe! I rate it === Flakes out of === Flakes!

One of my stops between aromatics and naturals, it falls nicely between the two, a nice cube cut and granulated cut, mosly medium in color. There is some slight aroma, fruity but not too intrusive. The flavor is American drugstore, but pre-Captain Black, in other words, not too goopy. Room aroma is not bad.
