I bought this on a bit of a whim, the Danish Pipe Shop's sale technique worked! Their vintage tobacco section says "worst case you need to humidify it yourself, best case is you've found GOLD". Gold eh? Well as this wasn't overly expensive for the D.P.S., and was only twelve years old, I thought "I'll have some of that!".
The flakes are dark brown, with a few lighter pieces of grain, and the twelve years have been kind: the moistness of O.C. is bang on the money. Because the flakes are thin this makes rubbing an easy task, and just one flake fills the bowl of one of my regular meer's to perfection. And then lighting it's only a one touch job, and this sets up a superb burn. At first, the prominent flavour's the Burley, with very little Virginia. It seems to be a steadfast Burley-heavy smoke. But then, in a short amount of time, I begin to get a slightly sweet aromatic note coming through. I'm guessing this is the Virginia, having developed over the years. It's this flavour which separates it from any old Burley that can be bought fresh; fresh, for half the cost, lol! There's also a gentle herbiness to it, to be fair, if it were louder I'd run a mile, but it isn't too strongly added as to warrant avoidance! A negative from O.C. is the bite, it needs gentle sips.
The nicotine's below medium, and the room-note isn't too good.
Considering price, quality, availability, I think this only deserves two stars:
