The grassy, very tart and tangy citrusy, lightly floral flue cured Virginia is the major component. The woody, lightly nutty, earthy, herbal, lightly spicy, dry dark fired Kentucky is a supporting player. The nutty, earthy, woody burley is in the background, and has a slight sharp note. The lightly soapy, rather floral sweet Lakeland topping is the main one; a little less so than in many other G&H products, though you may not think that in the first quarter of the experience. The vanilla underscores the taste. The toppings sublimate the tobaccos to a fair extent, but after the half way point, will diminish some, and you’ll notice the tobaccos a bit more. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is in the center of mild to medium. No chance of bite or harshness. Burns cool, clean, and a little slow with some richness in its floral, sweet flavor. Leaves just a little moisture in the bowl, and requires a fair amount of relights. Has a pleasant slightly lingering sweet after taste, and room note. Can almost be an all day smoke.

Gawith Hoggarth’s No. 7 Broken Flake, like all GH blends is made up of very high quality tobaccos. The thing is that if you don’t like the flavoring, it won’t matter how good the tobacco is and for many these are love or hate blends. I love them. The description of No. 7 Broken Flake as the reversal of Coniston Cut Plug is spot on. The Virginia tobaccos lead the way rather than the Burley, offering more natural sweetness (in addition to all the flavoring) than CCP and NO7BF has less of a nic hit although it is far from wimpy. NO7BF is “floral sweet” and smokes without a bite. Unlike a lot of American style aromatics, this blend ages quite well as the Virginia component further sweetens to complement the flavoring. The topping/casing also holds up well over years of storage. With the exception of the flakes with added chocolate or tonquin, I have long since given up on pulling out the flavoring other than the either soapy or floral qualities. But with NO7BF I can definitely taste the added vanilla although it melds into the casing rather than being an upfront player. The added flavors in Lakeland style aromatics can really ghost a pipe so use caution before smoking them in a treasured briar. No. 7 Broken Flake is no exception and will leave strong ghost behind. Even from Lakeland blend to Lakeland blend, they can really distort the flavor left by a prior blend. So if you smoke a wide range of them like I do, be committed to dedication several different briars to cover the gamut of different blends. I prefer to use inexpensive cobs for many of them. GH & Co produce four most excellent tobaccos: Ennerdale, Bosun Cut, #7 Broken Flake, and Hyde Park (which they make for Peterson). Each has the unique "Lakeland Essence" that is loved by many - and loathed by just as many. For us Yanks, it tends to be a love it or hate it relationship. As you might surmise, this Yank loves it.

The subject of this review is their #7 Broken Flake blend, which is my favorite of the four afore mentioned blends. It's the lightest of them, Lakeland Essence-wise, but also the blend that best allows the outstanding tobacco base to shine through. As far as Lakeland Essence goes, I've never really been able to figure out what, exactly, is in there. I get some almond, geranium, and tonquin bean notes - but there is a whole lot of something else in there as well.

#7 Broken Flake is a solid VaBur blend, with the underlying tobacco being similar to Pete Irish Flake but not nearly as stout. The light dose of "Kendal Sauce" (aka Lakeland Essence) really does a lot to enhance the wonderful VaBur base, but the addition of the vanilla extract is what makes this a truly sublime blend. This Vanilla-Kendal Sauce topping is definitely noticeable for the first few minutes, but then it tones down and disappears into the background where it adds a wonderful dimension to the outstanding slightly nutty and deeply hay-like VaBur base. As far as the room note goes, it's neither foul nor fair: it won't run anybody off, but it won't endear you to anyone either - it merely smells like pipe tobacco with a slightly floral essence.

If you've ever been curious Lakeland blends, this is the one that I recommend you try first due to the light dose of Kendal Sauce. If you're a long-time fan of these blends but have never tried this one, then I also recommend it and for the same reason: the light Lakeland essence allows you to fully appreciate the base VaBur blend and adds a wonderful dimension to it. However, I recommend that you dedicate a pipe to it because it will ghost any pipe that you put it in, and if the pipe is already ghosted by another Lakeland blend then you won't be able to truly appreciate this fine GH & Co. offering on its own merits. It smokes really well in a cob, so you might want to start off smoking it in a MM. That's what I did, and it turned out well for me. Just don't use one of those dinky little Legends - go with a Diplomat or Country Gentleman. An Egg or Spool will also work (if you can find either one), as will a Park Avenue or a Mark Twain. The larger bowls on these pipes will allow for the blend to really open up.

It's a truly wonderful blend, and I can't recommend it highly enough. However, as with any GH & Co. blend, this is not really a blend that I would recommend to beginning pipe smokers. It's a bit fussy when it comes to preparation. The broken flake format requires a bit of rubbing-out, and it does require a bit of dry-out time. It requires care when filling and lighting, and the wonderful flavor will be lost if you don't sip on it ever so slowly. This is a blend to which you want to devote your full attention, and the odds are that it's going to require at least a couple of relights. This is not a bad thing, because the pay-off is a truly sublime smoking experience.

No. 7 comes with a rustic broken flake appearance. It reminds me of Condor Original Long Cut flake in the bowl. It doesn't carry the strength of Dark Flake, or the topping of Ennerdale. It is lighter on the nicotine than Cannon Plug, but it is as semi-sweet as that honey dew topping. The essence fades to reveal an outstanding VA component. The vanilla is just detectable. This one might serve as all day smoke if I smoked all day. This smokes cool and bone-dry right out of the bag. No drying necessary. No bite potential. No challenges. This is a very pleasant Lakeland District broken flake.

G&H has a long list of bell ringers with me. I love the quality of their leaf and the way they can add a little something extra to their blends that somehow works. A classic deep Virginia Mixed with Burley and a wisp of Vanilla that somehow manages to tie the whole thing together. No. 7 is not as strong as many of their other blends along the Virginia line, but is no limp-wristed little blend either. And, as is the case with all the G&H line, this one burns clean to the bottom with few re-lights. Just an awesome smoke!

I find this blend to be pitch-perfect. The added flavorings are moderate at best, the faint lingering sweetness is divine and this mixture is superbly balanced with absolutely no mid to end-bowl bitterness. It’s nowhere near as scented as the pouch note suggests and the smoke is quite delicate both in flavor and overall mouthfeel. Altogether the ubiquitous G&H soapiness is present but with adequate dry time the side stream hints much more at vanilla extract than it does a floral or herbal flavor. Liberal dry time also reduces any chance of bite.

With a name like No. 7 Broken Flake, this one is going to fly under the radar of many pipe smokers, even those of us that adore these quirky old world Kendal products. I wish I had discovered this one earlier. Probably one of the only scented Lakelands that I could easily smoke all day.

What a boring name for a good Lakeland! Did GH run out of Northern landmarks? In any case, the florals in this are a bit less than Bosun cut plug, but more than made up with the vanilla and light spice. A solid blend that lit easily and smoked well. Lakeland fans should not miss this. All others, stay far away!

I have only smoked a few bowls so this is preliminary at best, but the tobacco deserves recognition. It is slightly perfumy to my nose and taste, but in a good way. When first smelling it in the bag, oh boy that smells good! The flake is broken into irregularly sized pieces so you can pack it as it is, or rub it out some more if you want. It burns beautifuly with a clean white ash. As already mentioned, the taste is a bit perfumed, but there is the creamy taste of the Scottish Cake there too. This is in, my opinion, an outstanding tobacco that can be smoked as often as craved. I find that craving does occur with this tobacco which tells me I like it a lot.

Effervescent is the word that keeps popping up in my head while smoking this blend, something in the flavoring makes it taste bubbly to me. I love it and I'll be cellaring this one DEEP, along with the other Lakeland blends I love. This one is refreshing, it works well in the warmer weather especially in humid climates but it helps keep ya warm in the winter too. This is said to be the exact opposite of Coniston Cut Plug and I certainly can't argue with that statement. I love CCP but that one is more of an "every now and then" type smoke whereas this one is more like a daily smoke but it is still no weakling either as I don't think anything from GH&Co. is. I would say the nicotine level would fall in the medium spectrum. Those folks know how to make masculine blends with just a touch of femininity and the femininity in this case happens to be the floral notes added in the top dressing. I love, love, love tobaccos that have floral notes in them as it seems to work with the tobacco as apposed to completely drowning out the natural flavors. Most folks that say they only get perfume from these scented tobaccos probably haven't gotten passed the first couple of puffs as anyone who has smoked a whole lot of this stuff knows that the tobaccos really open up and bloom and the added scent becomes a nuance that helps keep the leaf interesting. I think our friends out in the Lake District are absolute genius blenders and are some of the great artists of our time and times passed.

Essential (only if you are man enough to handle the florals... : )

This is a great smoke. The Lakeland scent fades after a few puffs revealing a great VaBur. The Virginia gives the most flavor and the Burley supports it nicely. There remains just the right amount of Lakeland, a very mild amount, throughout the bowl. Very pleasant and satisfying. Top notch tobacco.

Mild to medium in body. Medium in taste. Flavoring starts at medium and rapidly devolves to very mild. Burns great.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I can't taste the vanilla. Seems to be lost in the mix.

Gawith Hoggarth - No. 7 Broken Flake.

Let's start with the initial aroma of the unlit product, very incongruous, sort of like opening my wife's make up box as it is so perfume like. The moistness of the tobacco is really good, neither too damp nor dry. It crumbles with ease and does not necessitate much preparation time.

It takes to the flame with ease, burns even and steadily. The nicotine level I find quite pleasing as its about their Louisiana flake level and if you choose to inhale the smoke it causes no discomfort. On the negative side it does have (like the unlit tobacco) a perfume like taste with a flowery touch which is not completely egregious, it just gets a touch too much after a while and you can't ignore it anymore. That spoils this a bit as it impedes upon the lovely Virginia and Burley flavors. It doesn't bite me, no matter how hard and frequent I draw. The room note is not as perfume like as the smoke, just very mediocre.

Shame about the excess perfume taste, if it were abated a touch it would make for a better smoke and score more points!

Extremely addictive stuff. Delicious, even if the taste is not as 'clean' as my all-time favorite Bright CR Flake. High-quality Virginia, a generous but reasonable portion of Kendal sauce, burns slow and is not very particular about the pipe or packing method. I prefer to just stuff the pipe with #7 as it is, without rubbing it out fully, tastes better to me.

Dry out well and enjoy!

Will buy more and recommend to any Kendal tobacco enthusiast.

Upon opening No. 7, I was struck by a sharp perfume-like odor that didn't really bode well for the smoke to come. While I normally like GH & Co's mildly flavored tobaccos, I found this particular topping to be very distasteful. The harsh (I initially thought it was burning too hot), synthetic perfume-like flavor persists through the beginning of the smoke. Like other reviewers have noted, this eventually subsides to what turns out to be a fairly pleasant smoke. If only one could get around the first few minutes! I was not impressed even after setting it aside for a few weeks and giving it a second try. This is one to pass off to a friend who, hopefully, may find the flavoring to their liking. Perhaps you'll have a better experience.

I received about an ounce of this from a friend. It comes as a broken flake as you might expect, and I loaded as is. I did not find it necessary to rub it out any more. Hydration was good. I am not sure how long it had been in the ziplock baggie, and some of the topping may have flashed off. I have never had Coniston Cut Plug, so I don't have that for any comparison. Pouch note is Lakeland and some floral sweet.

The smoking experience is very good. The Lakeland sauce was applied with a light hand, and the tobacco is the star player. The Virginia provides some citrus and a tart flavor when puffed. The burley gives it a full and slightly nutty quality. The DFK gives it a touch of spice. There is a little tingle on the snork and a pleasant sweet aftertaste.

The vanilla is only barely noticeable in my sample, but it seems to tie things together in a way I would not have expected. I am not the big fan of vanilla flavors in pipe tobacco as a rule, but it seems to work well here.

This one is a solid 3. It might be a good introduction to Lakelands, and it is a very pleasant smoke.

Lakeland-style tobaccos: They're not for everybody. I'm a fan of the Lakelands, myself and I've liked just about everything that GH & Co. produces. This has become one of my favorites. No. 7 is comprosed of some fine Virginias and Burleys and the essence that is applied is restrained, but definitely present. I don't get a lot of Vanilla flavor, but I do get all of the floral notes, but that's not what this blend is really about, I think. This blend is about some top quality tobaccos and a little something extra.

It's not a perfume explosion like Ennerdale, but definitely a GH tobacco. The Lakeland essence, while quite noticeable at first, begins to fade into the background after about the 1/4 bowl mark at which point, they come in and out of the smoking experience. Like the previous reviewer, I would have preferred just a bit more of the Lakeland flavor, but it is still an excellent smoke. If you like Lakeland tobaccos, this should definitely be on the top of your list.

Let me say that I am a fan of the British Highland type of blends, I just love Condor so I am not new to toppings on a good Virginia base. This blend falls into this catagory and I have enjoyed it, I just don't love it. For my tastes, it is a little to mild on the topping to be in this catagory yet to topped for a good VA lover. It comes in a broken flake and must be rubbed out a bit and I liked it best dried out overnight. It is a mix of medium to dark brown color and the pouch aroma is somewhat tangy yet sweet. It produces on first light, and it does light very easily and stays lit well, it produces a semi sweet, creamy smoke with a tartness to it. I did not find it overly soapy nor did I ever really taste nay vanilla in it though I could detect it in the room note. The room note is pleasant, sweet and not cigarette like as a lot of VA's can be. As I smoked it down the bowl, it never had any bite but if smoked to fast it got a little unpleasant but smoked slow it is a nice smoke. It never really gained any strenth to speak of until the last of the bowl and then it got a little harsh. It burned down without relites and to a light grey ash and a little dottle at the bottom of the pipe. While I would say this is an enjoyable blend, I can't highly recommend it, there are better in it's type. But I will smoke the rest I have and will enjoy it.

Too much flavoring for me. It is not a scent I enjoy. Quality tobacco otherwise. I might try letting this dry and try it later. Sometimes that will subdue a too-strong flavoring.

Let's start on this tobacco's most obvious aspect: it is scented. When I got my GH sampler, I thought this would be as unpleasant as Conniston Cut Plug. I put the sample off until everything else had been smoked. In hindsight, that was an error.

Two things distinguish this from CCP. First, there is true Virginia flavor in the tobacco. Another reviewer mentioned that he recognized Scottish Flake-type characteristics, and I agree. This has that warm, cake-like flavor that makes so many GH flakes so satisfying. Second, the topping actually complements these flavors. The topping remains throughout the smoke, but recedes considerably, to the point where it becomes an integrated element of the blend.

I never thought this would appeal to me, but I was mistaken. Very tasty.

Gawith and Hoggarth No 7 Broken Flake -I am usually not a fan of Vanilla on my tobacco but it works for me here . This is somewhere between Bosum cut plug and Brown flake . The Virginias are the main player but the nutty burley is spot on in the background. I believe the dark fired is a Virginia leaf . It has that flavor like Bosum plug but less of it . If Bosum plug is too strong , then here you go . I like this a lot and I think it will be a great summer smoke . It is no lightweight though . Another great tobacco from GH . Be careful , once the Lakeland Essence gets a hold you may crave it ! 4

Two types of smells and smokes from this tobacco I have learned. Sometimes, and every second bowl, like dry mushrooms I have had feeling of.

Interesting lakeland type of tobacco. Floral essence is dominating. There was something disturbing me. I dont like smell of lavender, thus this flower is part of toping most probably. Second flavor I have smelled was vanilla. (and as was mentioned in prolog, maybe mushrooms)

Tobacco is accurate moist. It is more enjoyable loosely packed in bowl. Major taste is toping, but you can easily feel sweetness from VA. There is no moisture from tobacco, need only few relights.

Have to say quality of tobacco is really high. I can lake-style of tobaccos, but this one is oscillating from 1 to 4. Finally, I would recommend somewhat.

Broken Flakes, quite dry, ready for use, but as this tobacco is sold in bulk, moisture content depends on seller’s storage. Unlit it has a pronounced floral/soapy aroma very typical of the Lakeland style. Actually it smells quite similar to Ennerdale Flake.

It lights easily and smokes slow. Strength is medium and it produces a full flavored smoke redolent with the Lakeland aromas (rather complex, lavender, pine resin, lemongrass - really cannot tell, though I do not get much of the vanilla) on a background of pure high quality tobacco where the dark fired leaf despite its low percentage contributes much leaving a slightly bitter-sweet aftertaste.

Can be an all-day tobacco if you like the style. Broken Flake no.7 is yet another excellent Lakeland flake tobacco.

#7 Broken Flake, yet another Gawith,Hoggarth floral blend. This one comes like a lot of G&H flakes end up anyway- broken. It smokes well just by packing as is. Though floral, it is much less so than, say Ennerdale or Bosun Cut Plug. The floral aspect quickly recedes, though it is detectable throughout the bowl via french inhaling. The Va flavor is very sweet and dominates in the second half of the bowl.

I agree with the above reviewers that there is a resemblence to Broken Scotch Cake and to Scotch Flake (very similar) as well. This seems to be a lot stronger in the nicotine than those however, and is best enjoyed in a small bowl.

I am still deciding which of the floral flakes I favor most, and this one is in the running.

Package note of lakeland, mild sour vegetation and spices. Tobacco is a broken flake of dark brown, black and a little light brown. Moisture content is great. Rubs out with a little effort. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. Flavoring is mild to medium, with notes of Tonquin Bean and Vanilla. Vanilla is the first to drop to the background within the first 1/4. The tonquin/lakeland decreases intensity a bit at the 1/2-way point and remain in the middle ground till nearly the end. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of tonquin/lakeland, vanilla, floral, sugar, spices, molasses, peaty vegetation, orange peel/zest, bread, wood, mild nuts, tart and tangy citrus, sweet hay, rich earth, an almost herbal lemon grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Virginias is leading with Dark-Fired, Flavoring and Burley supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

Today was a good day for tobacco mail. Got some Skiff which is gorgeous and an ounce of Broken Flake No7 which is exquisite. Reminds me of a soft Ennerdale. Has a beautiful tin note and taste lovely drawing on an unlit pipe. I love Ennerdale but I get that it's a bit much for some people; this one is really soft and has a melange of stunning flavours topping the excellent tobacco. Very much in the same mould as Brown Flake Aromatic but the Lakeland essence has been dialled right down. I loaded the Peterson 303 and left it rest for a couple of hours. Took a few lights to get it going and was in heaven for an hour and a quarter. No bite or heat from this one and a beautiful sweetness that is unlike any other leaf I have smoked before with the topping just hovering in the background. A very mellow but tasty smoke, with a decent amount of nicotine to keep me happy. Its probably going to be one I smoke a lot during the summer as it has that sort of feel to it. And the Virginias are haylike and very smooth with no sharp citrus tang that I dislike intently.

I'd forgotten smoking this, but found my notes from years ago when I lived in Preston and used to buy my tobacco from the Magazine Shop by the station. They had a magnificent selection of the lake district baccies and I used to get something different every time.

I found this a bit more controlled in the perfume department than Ennerdale Flake, with subtle florals that didn't dominate the tobacco. The tobacco was mild, bite free and smoked slowly and cool. It seems people enjoyed the aroma too. Perhaps I should give this one another try!

It's been a while since i tried a new aromatic blend.once the tin opens a nice sweet floral smell comes out.A deeper smell reveals some vanilla notes accompanied with some spices.the mostly dark brown flakes are smooth and manageable either to fold as they are or to rub.Whatever you choose some drying time is needed.The lighting is easy with some relights required.while smoking you instantly realize that the virginias are the main ingridient.Lots of grasses ,citruses,bread notes and some fruits give a rich flavour.The dark fired burleys are mostly spicy without being overwhelming.last but not least the burleys add some froral,peppery and nutty flavours.The lakeland style topping is obvious from the first puff untill the last.the main flavour is soapy with rich floral flavours.the vanilla add is obvious but not strong.Generally i found the flavours rich,very well combined in a pleasant way.Burns cool and slow to perfect ash with some moisture left at the filter.No tongue bite happens even if pushed hard.It can ghost a pipe easy.the nicotine level is above medium wich is the weak point of this blend.The room note is pleasant.An easy going all day blend.Recommended.I would give it 4 stars if the nicotine level was a bit higher.

Apprearance/pouch aroma:

Very light brown to golden cut ribbons of Va and burley, with some medium to dark brown flakes of the dark fired. Very few flake pieces remain intact in my order, mostly ribbons of tobacco only once pressed into a flake.

Aroma of brown flake and dark fired, along with confectionary vanilla and some lake floral essence.

Packing/lighting/smoking: What remains of the broken flakes rub out nicely, but as most G&H blends this one is the typical moist tobacco. either set out for an hour is you have the forethought, or microwave for 7 seconds if you are looking for instant gradification like I do.

Lights very easily and I am quite impressed!

Initial flavors remind me a bit of Stonehenge, with the Lake essence added. The vanilla really stand out in the smoke and room note. reminds me of butter cream vanilla frosting made with rose water, if that makes sense. 2nd half the dark fired really come to life. A bit stronger, more bold, more strength. I still detect the vanilla in minute quantities, but the florals seemed to have faded. Burns a bit wet at times, but If dried properly, that can be controlled. Another 4 star winner from G&H!

Aromatic tobaccos fall into the Danish scope or range, which is not the case here. Rather, No. 7 Broken Flake is a Lakeland blend, so I'd not class it as a true aromatic. Having said that, the Lakeland topping seems to wane pretty soon. Then, all you are being left with is a virginia/burley blend that is more burleyish than virginia like because of the flue curing process. Also, it seems to pack a little bit of a wallop in terms of nicotine strength, which becomes more and more apparent as you progress with your smoke. The burley leaf it contains seems to add a little bit of depth, but the backbone of this blend is the flue cured virginia thereof. The smoking experience is quite satisfying and cool. borderline full-bodied, but soft on the palate. On the downside, I really cannot see any drawbacks or shortcomings, but I am not overtly impressed, so a rating of 3 stars seems appropriate.

This comes in bulk as a typical GH soft leathery high quality flake. You are greeted with the Lakeland essence, though milder than others in their stable. The tobacco is mostly lighter Virginia with enough darker leaf and burley to leave a medium but noticeable nicotine level. The topping is sweet and their are hints of vanilla. Smokes cool and dry down to a fine white ash. It would be a fine tobacco even without the topping, nice as it is. I discovered this blend by accident at my local B&M. stupid name, great blend. Smoke in a dedicated Lakeland briar, or a cob/meer.

I had few bowls of this fine tobacco as my friend gave me some to try it out. He smokes this a lot, and in his office you can always smell some of it's aroma. I liked it from the first puff, as it reminded me of the Condor and st. Bruno. Not exactly that Lakeland floral aroma, but there is something that resembles. There sure is a geranium rose essence in the casing. Maybe there is vanilla also, but I didn't smell it at all. It's a mellow smoke, because of the burley I guess. Still not as good and straight forward as straight VA's. As predominantly latakia and VA/Vaper smoker, I found this interesting enough, also satisfying, not overwhelming, and a smoke that can go perfectly in the morning with your coffee. It bothers however if you smoke it constantly. You get fed up with it and bored. There is something nasty about these Lakeland style aromatics that don't let you smoke them all the way. There is just a limit for the floral smell after which it gets not artificial, but just "too much". Add a bit of dark aroma (vanilla maybe?) to that, and it becomes heavy. As a treat every once in a while it's ok, but not for every day, not for a regular smoke. Just like the cake and the bread. You can eat bread everytime, but you get fed up with cakes and sweets easily.

But that's just my opinion as a LAT/VA/VA-Per smoker. Others may find it delightful.

Another nice offering from GH. Medium brown broken flakes - similar to Rum Flake - and with a moisture content suitable for immediate smoking. Very mild cocoa scent from the bag and some florals and soap as typical of GH. Loading and lighting were a breeze. The overall smoke was one of a slight spice to the tongue (not bite). It didn't smoke hot or produce any moisture while smoking. A typical Burley Virginia mixture, moderately spicy. Mildly floral, not soapy, no discernible taste of cocoa, but this is picked up while lighting and in the side stream. No overt floral taste except for the slight bitterness (in a good way) that florals always seem to have from GH. Would be a good start for those trying out Lakelands. A little more flavoring for me would have been preferred. Overall recommended and definitely one for my weekly rotation.

As always, I recommend my beloved traditional soapy blends! This in particular could please even who usually doesn't like this kind of blend, because the flavouring is mild in the beginning and almost disappears going on down the bowl. The leaves involved are top quality, as usual with G&H, the burning cool and dry and without any tongue bite. Very good.

If you like scented flakes, you'll probably like this one. At the beginning of the bowl the scenting can be a bit over-the-top, but it quickly settles in to a lovely background for a really good Virginia tobacco. I prefer to smoke ol' number 7 in a larger pipe; it burns nice and slow and stays "in the zone" for an extended period. I like this one a lot.

Very strong tobacco. I have some trouble with rubbing out the flake. But thats due to inexperience.

The tin aroma is amazing but it is too much for an inexperienced smoker.

I will definitely try this again in a few months.

Summary: an excellent Virginia blend with some Burley to give it character beneath the mysterious Lakeland Essence.

Virginia blends require a certain finesse to make interesting because straight Virginia tends to be too sweet (bright), too fruity (red), or too much wheat toast with honey (brown). This broken flake looks like a dead thistle head but lights easily and smokes like a dream, with the sweetness of Virginia given some warmth, breadth, and a little tang of spice from the dark-fired leaf. While the Lakeland Essence haunts my dreams in terror, here it comes across as mild and gives the flavor a little tweak before fading into the background with an incense-like quality. I could smoke this blend all day but its sister blend, "Coniston Cut Plug," would have to feature in there in mid-afternoon for its powerhouse dark fired Kentucky Burley brainhammer. However if you want a Virginia blend that has enough nicotine to keep you paying attention, and a flavor that is internally varied enough to avoid boredom, this is a great find for the all-day smoker.

Totally agree with SteelCowboy. My favorite G&H Lakeland blends! Conniston cut plug and #7broken flake. They both have the capacity to carry me far away! How can tobacco taste this good!

Simple and uncomplicated blend. The can had a 2012 excise. The manufacturer states that this blend is poorly flavored, which in my opinion, is true: I managed to catch only a slight aroma of vanilla and rosehip from the Lakeland. The rest of the scents I'm willing to admit are natural - baked apple, dried cut grass, a little bit of walnut and a slight smell of smoke. Also, the manufacturer claims that this blend is a cut of Coniston Cut Plug. I haven't tried the latter yet, so I can't say if that's true.

The tobacco is sliced sloppily and in plates of varying sizes, which are then broken. The thickness of the plates varies from a millimeter to two, and one plate at different ends may have different thicknesses. It is quite difficult to fill a pipe with such a mixture, and it is better if it is a pipe with a wide bowl. The color of the tobacco is the usual earthy brown for dark Virginia. The kneading is medium, the consistency is dense. The tobacco is a bit dry.

The tobacco flavor is very simple: bread and grassy hint of Virginia, nut, a bit of earth, baked apple. To be honest, I was expecting more. The strength of the tobacco is medium, hardly changes as you smoke. The tobacco is exceptionally mild, burns slowly and cool, burns unevenly, sometimes fades. Burns, leaving a loose, but fine ash. There is little moisture, the tobacco is easily smoked without a filter.

The tobacco smoke has a light, neutral tobacco flavor.

Bottom line: Absolutely no pretensions to anything, an everyday blend with a slight touch of Lakeland.

Tin note for me was sweet floral with citrus, nice. I like the cut also, rubbed out slightly. A little damp, although I don't dry it out so it takes a minute to get it going. The floral Lakeland essence is prominent but not excessive. This is good, since Lakeland is what I signed up for. What sets this one apart is the addition of vanilla, which adds a sweetness that compliments the floral component. It also smokes cool, and might need a relight. Room note is nice as well.

Mix it with Erinmore mixture and it becomes the BLAKEMAR mix and its superb all day smoke - makes it a nutty sweet - but not over sweet, smoke, with a stunning room note, and very pleasant taste! I would not be without some in my stock.

very fine virginia, in combination with a rather discreet dark fired and some burley to round it off. the scent seems rather overwhelming in the pouch aroma, but is a lot less massive when the tobacco is lit - and the broken flakes pack and light easily. during the smoke, the virginia slowly comes to the foreground, and around the 2/3 mark, it actually does taste a bit like gallaher's rich dark honeydew. only a bit, though, and not enough to justify it being reccommended "for those who enjoyed gallaher's rdh", as one vendor puts it.

it's a quality smoke, no doubt, but i do feel that it would be more to my taste with a little less flavouring.

Have just finished sampling a variety of G & H lightly flavored tobaccos. DVC was too harsh and one dimensional for my taste; Glengarry remained too flavored throughout for my palate and nose; #7 Broken Flake was very good for someone who prefers non-flavored virginias. The initial few minutes of the smoke revealed some of the mild flavorings in this tobacco that were in fact pleasing to my senses, but these soon dissipated and what remained was a very pleasant, tasty, and enjoyable smoke. For a change of pace for us pure virginia lovers, this one will most certainly satisfy your palate.
