The mildest and smoothed of pipe tobaccos. This is a mild, smooth, rich pipe tobacco that improves throughout the smoke, owing to the slow release of the flavors inherent in the top quality leaf used in the blend. The aroma tends toward wild honey and, perhaps, pecan.

The burley is nutty sweet with a minor earth note, while the Virginia cavendish is slightly grassy with a touch of citrus. The black cavendish offers only a hint of vanilla, so it must be unsweetened. The honey and pecan toppings are mild, and only slightly flash off toward the finish. The toppings do sublimate the tobaccos. Has very little nicotine. Doesn't bite. Needs some dry time, and will still leave moisture in the bottom of the bowl. Needs some relights. Burns cool with no harshness, but the flavor just doesn't seem as good in the last quarter. The after taste is rather plain. An all day smoke.

I tell you what....this Mellow Mack delivers on what it promises on the label. A mild and smooth smoke. It'll smack you with its mellowness. Personally i find the blend too bland because i prefer something with stronger in taste and a gentle nicotine kick..something that Mellow Mack won't do for me. But i just love the quality and texture of the smoke it gives. So i found a way to get the best out of it when i mix it with a little Irish flake and...i got the best out of it. Now....Mellow mack has become my base tobacco in which i do my own mix with other tobaccos according to my own feel on that particular day...I'd recommend Mellow Mack but not on its own....Enjoy...!

Every once in a while, I enjoy a dessert tobacco after a nice dinner, and sometimes even after a lousy one. McClelland aromatics fill the bill. Mellow Mack is a loose mixed shag/ribbon cut of Virginias, probably some burley with a rich pecan and honey casing. Though most definitely a sugary cased tobacco, unlike Nat Sherman 314, this does not smoke wet and it doesn?t gurgle my pipe. It has all the hallmarks of McClelland quality. I prefer the nougat chewiness of Best of Show, but the Mack is also noteworthy. I also plan on giving the maple nut Town Topic a try. It?s a mellow smoke, wonderful in room aroma and a pleasant diversion for those who enjoy sugar in the evening, though not necessarily at suppertime. Outside of Wilke?s magnificent Bohemian, McClelland offers a quality alternative in aromatic tobacco smoking.

----------------------------------------- 4/19 - What was I thinking when I wrote the above? I know I wasn't drinking. I guess tastes change, and this is another one I'm downgrading, especially after trying so many other finer blends and luscious aromatics. This is McC's bad seed. It's hot, acrid and syrupy. Lots of wet dottle and muck on the bottom of the pipe. This is little more than a refined Captain Black. I've had the tin open for about 4 months, and it's still wet and gloppy. This stuff won't dry out. I think there's linseed oil in it. Burns the mouth and tongue. I've got about 3/4 of the tin left. Anyone want it?

As fine an aromatic as I have ever personally smoked. What a surprise -- I expected a gooey aromatic with no flavor. Instead, I puffed on a Burley blend with backbone and subtle sweetness. The combination satisfied my urge for nicotine and my family's urge to whiff something pleasant from my pipes. There is no bite and I can smoke this rapidly and often. This is a great change of pace tobacco.

The tin I just cracked is 13yrs old that I bought at a local B&M after the word that McClelland was closing the doors.

I've had a fresh tin a while back. I remember that being a bit wetter in the can. The top dressing was more pronounced and the leaf flavor was in the background to it. I don't recall it getting bitey or anything like that.

This tin with 13yrs age is definitely a different animal. The leaf is a tad drier. The top note has faded off a bit and the Burley + Virginia made Cavendish are definitely more to the forefront than they were in a fresh tin. The nuttiness of the Burley is more evident than the pecan flavoring.

I would say this is a good aromatic fresh, but as McClelland has closed if you come across a tin down the road it won't be a disappointing smoke. If you prefer a more natural tobacco taste then it could work out great for you.

Well..........hmmm.......im not sure how i can put this without sounds like a pipe snob. But i dig a good aro, or a good cheap OTC aro, so i cant be too stuck up.

But.

This isnt good. Plain and simple.

It smells fantastic from the tin. Sticky. With a beautiful cut and color. Super easy to pack a bowl. But make sure you let this dry some.

It burns hot. Some gurgle in the stem, and will bite if you puff too fast. And by that, i mean more then a puff and the thought of another puff. Captain black doesnt bite this much!!!!

Once in awhile you get a sweet flavor out of this. But dont count on it.

Room note is great!!!! I just wish it tasted as good..........

What is it about McClelland? They are consummate artists, no matter what they try their hand at. They may not always be successful (Royal Cajun Special, eg), but they always produce quality. I finally got around to trying their aromatics, and they've achieved a perfection with this genre like they have with their virgnias and their english (though balkans seem to elude them).

I've been searching for an aromatic I can say I enjoy without qualification, and I have found one with Mellow Mack. They have it just right -- it's not at all goopy and cloying, but dry and delicate and velvety. It's what a creamy Belgian confection is to a Hershey's bar; or what a fine muscat is to a wine cooler. Delicately sweet with a subtle honey and pecan essence as advertised, it's a compellingly elegant flavor with a terrific room note. It's the first aromatic I've tried I would consider a masterpiece. In fact, I don't think I've ever gone through a 50g tin so quickly.

Smells great in the tin, packs beautifully with a delicate hand, stays lit without problem, burns to a fine ash without any dottle, easily fills the mouth with billows of delightful nectar, and will not bite you not matter how hard you puff at it. Highly recommended for the non-aromatic smoker willing to try a gourmet dessert smoke.

This is a top quality American style aromatic. The tin aroma is very much like a pecan brownie.

The tin I purchased was three years old. There was no vinegar smell, and the moisture level was perfect.

Packs, lights, and smokes quite easily. Not too wet. There are hints of licorice weaving between the chocolate and pecan. The tobacco taste is nearly absent.

Afterwards, I had a pleasant aftertaste, so the tobacco is of good quality. I would recommend this as a step up from Lane or Altadis aromatics. If you like all natural tobacco, you should of course skip this. I doubt I will purchase any more, but it isn't bad.

In Central Texas, in June, both the humidity levels and the temperature hover around 90. Every summer, about this time, two things happen. First I begin to wonder who in the hell decided to stop and settle this steamy little stretch of hell--weird fish-people who need to breathe pure steam, future deoderant magnates, ordinary masochists, families of dry cleaners? The second thing is I lose all taste for Latakia and lose some, not all, of my patience regarding Virginias. This is the time when a man smokes some kind of burley, or just gives it up and smokes cigars until October, when the first waftings of cooler air begin to make us consider turning our A/Cs off SUPER MAX.

Mellow Mack, despite the goofy name, is a quality Burley mix. It looks to be about half Burley and half Black Cavendish and there is a bit of some kind of nut-flavored top note. The effect in the pipe is a soft, mild, nutty smoke with a good tobacco flavor. The flavor is not really sweet, and has none of that weird taste and aftertaste the sweeter aromatics have. Trial pinches laid out in the open air do seem to dry out some, so the humectant level in this stuff is not overwhelming. It also smokes to a nice grey ash, and I don't seem to have any problems with wetness, gurgle, or dottle. All in all, this is a good choice for the steamier climes and I'm adding this to Mac Baren Navy Flake as one of the few aromatic Burleys I'm willing to smoke (at any time of the year). It won't replace Marlin Flake, and no one will ever mistake this blend for a great tobacco, but it's pretty damn good, and pretty unbeatable for the mission at hand.

I have smoked this tobacco in a variety of briar and meerschuam pipes, and even a cob. It goes well in all, but really shines in a well-smoked meerschaum.

Later note: Aptness for steamy Dallas summers notwithstanding, I find this tobacco uninteresting in better weather. It also seems, like many aromatics, to lose flavor after it's been opened awhile. I'll smoke it again next summer, I'm sure, but in the meantime, I'm downgrading my recommendation.

I didn't take any notes on this, meaning a detailed review isn't possible, but since I smoke this so often, I remember it well.

This is the tobacco that you will wish drugstore tobacco tasted like. It's got a smooth flavor and it smokes well after you dry it out. It's mild, pleasant for others and it is a well-crafted blend of quality burley and cavendish.

Simply put, if you're an aromatic smoker and you can only afford one tobacco this month, make it Mellow Mack. You'll be able to smoke it without fear of reprisal and you'll be free of tongue bite and nicotine headache.

I also find this tobacco to mix well with certain other aromatics. I take 2 parts Mellow Mack and 1 part Raspberries in Cream and it seems to make the smoke milder and creamier than normal.

Tin Aroma: The tin aroma of this blend is incredibly pleasing. Instead of being an unidentifiable sweet smell, there is actual character to the aroma. Upon first opening a tin, the smell is one of sugar cookies, very sugary sugar cookies, but after the tin has been allowed to breath for a day or two, the aroma takes on the unmistakable scent of hot pecan pie, a delicacy I have a particular weakness for. I could sit for some long while with my nose in a tin of this, content not to smoke it, but merely to inhale it's sweet aroma.

Physical Characteristics: An even mixture of light and dark pieces make up this ribbon cut. I will hazard a guess that the lighter strands are Burley and the darker are Cavendish. The pack is easy, but the bowl does tend to puff up a good bit during the charring light. Once tamped back down, a fully packed bowl becomes more like 5/8th bowl.

Notes: I must say, this quickly became my favorite aromatic ever. The smell of this while it is being smoked reminds me of pecan pie, or cookies being baked, and the taste is identical to that of one of my favorite blends, Burley and Black, a bulk from the CVS Pharmacy. Now, some people might take this comparison with a drugstore bulk to be a negative thing, but not I. I rather enjoy Burley/Cavendish blends, especially straightforward honest ones, and, regardless of the aromatic casing this blend has received, it falls right into that category. As with any Burley blend, this produces giant volumes of thick white smoke, which is visually very satisfying.

Verdict: As far as aromatics go, this is most definately my favorite of the ones I have smoked. It manages to avoid the main problem I have had with other aromatics, which is a strange sugary flavoring to the tobacco, regardless of what the scent is. For anyone who likes Cavendish or Burley blends, and needs something to please a crowd, this is it.

Indeed, this is a mellow tobacco. But I can't think of any McClellan blends that are not mellow. Mellow Mack has a truly wonderful and alluring smell. Pecans and honey? Maybe that's it. Smells kind of fruity too. Regardless, the casing is very heavy. This tobacco is all about the flavoring added. Another true crowd pleaser from McClellan. Young and old alike simply love it. A perfect tobacco to smoke at summer birthday parties, and other happy events. Myself? I usually smoke this tobacco while watching fireworks at a Fourth of July picnic. Year after year I find myself looking forward to that tradition. I only have a couple cans of this stuff, but that should last me the rest of my life.

This is a very wet, tasteful yet cloying aromatic blend. It is far too wet upon opening and does mot dry very fast thus it produces a hot and goopy smoke in the pipe. It is a ribbon cut, dark brown in color and once packed requires many relight to keep lit. It is the type of aromatic that gives aros a bad name. While the flavor is not bad, kind of a syrupy flavor it just burns too hot. It does have a heavenly cotton candy smelling room note though. If it would ever dry out it might mot be a bad blend for when one has a sweet tooth, but so far I think it will stay moist into the next century.

Billed as mild, smooth and rich. Delivered very mild, somewhat smooth, and less than rich. Initial puffs delivering sweet toasted pecans, matching the tin note, were fleeting. After getting into this, the pecan faded to a distant memory, replaced predominantly with a decent (but not the smoothest) burley/woody flavor. Stayed lit well, and burned down to a fine ash. In this case, a high 2 that doesn't reach the 3 mark.

I'm a relatively new pipe smoker at about a year and a half. I tried a number of blends starting out and almost gave up on the hobby until I tried this blend. As a new smoker I was looking for something with low nicotine, pleasant aroma while smoking, mild with no bite and didn't leave my pipe smelling like a skanky ash tray. This did it for me. I found it easy to pack, easy to light and keep lit and smokes dry to the bottom without gooping up my pipe. (At times it will smoke wet and gurgle a bit, but I've seen that as more related to me learning to pack my pipe and sip patiently rather the chuff it like a locomotive.) Occasionally a tin will be a bit moister and harder to light. I've found in those cases that letting my pipe sit out for 5-10 minutes after loading solves that. I've tried a few other blends, but keep coming back to Mellow Mack, so I guess it presently rates as my favorite. Many reviews refer to this blend as too mild. I find it a pleasure every time I light up. Perhaps my tastes will change over time, but at present this is my go-to blend that I always make sure to have available.

Mellow Mack... Another in my search for that ultimate aromatic, were all looking for. I picked this blend, because more times than not, I end up with a Mc Cllelland blend as my top choice anyway, so for me, it's always a good place to start. The tin says, mild and smooth. No argument there, in fact its so mild and smooth, that it is no longer a consideration in my search. I find it lacking in both strength and flavor, at least for my beat-up palet. From what I can see, this is a very well crafted blend. Totally without harshness or tongue bite, and a must try, for most aromatic lovers. I am impressed. It would be a great aromatic for when one isn't really in the mood for an aro, if one can get what I mean by that? At any rate, I was ambivalent in my baccy shop as to whether or not I should invest in this tobacco. Hey it's only 50 grams, right? If you are looking for a mild, lightly aromatic smoke, then this is the best I have found. Everything about this is mild. It is a nice light smoke. Like a Spring day.

Having smoked a pipe for some 35 years, I have mostly moved from Aromatics to more hearty tobacco. In part this is because most Aromatics are just too heavily cased and sickly sweet for my taste.

This one is getting its own pipe. The casing is very light. It provides a tin and room note that is just a hint of Honey and Pecans. I love it. Can't see myself smoking it all day long. But I like variety and rotate tobaccos as well as pipes.

This one will be part of that rotation for the frequest occassions where I want something light in flavor (like McCranie's Red Ribbon) and slightly Aromatic. This tobacco is for the Bourbon drinker who can occassionally appreciate the lightness and subtelty of an excellent Vodka Martini.

I bought a tin of this based on the reviews I read here and my desire to experiment with aromatic blends. At first I was not that impressed. It smells OK in the tin but has little flavor when smoked. We had a few friends over one night and none of them cared for the room note.

As a result I moved this tin to my car and only smoke it on my way to and from work. I have found that the more I smoke it the more I like it. The flavor although a little on the mild side and room note although not that aromatic in my opinion have grown on me. For a mild tobacco it is pretty good.

I like that it burns smooth and cool and does not require many relights. I also like that it doesn't get too goopy in my pipe. I'm not sure I will buy much of it but I may from time to time have to revisit this one to see if my opinion changes.

This is, by far, the best aromatic i have smoked. overall it yielded the most satisfying smoke in months.

The tin aroma gives a very thick and strong impression of rum cake (one of my favorites). The tobacco is light and springy, and slightly damp.

I decided to use my new savinelli, and i packed a full bowl. I packed it medium to light. For the first few draws i wasn't impressed with the taste... though it smoked very cool. But the taste developed into a pleasantly mild sweetness. Excellent taste, smooth mellow, cool, and dry are great adjectives for this aromatic. And the room note is great. The end of the bowl became a little wet, but it was manageable. The nutty aftertaste was excellent.

overall an excellent blend.

NOTE: Mellow Mack seems to be at its best when packed lightly. A tight packing strains the sweetness and cause the boiling goop common to aromatics. But these problems are completely circumvented by a light pack, and of course a slow smoke.

Overall: This one didn't work for me. I didn't like the casing or the cavendish used in this blend. Tried in several pipes dedicated to aromatics, even a cob, but still couldn't get over the flavor. The tin aroma does have a coffee-like quality, though I'd say the coffee in question would be a hazelnut-flavored blend. Also when first opened there's a vinegar-like scent, evidently from the preservative used to prevent mold. This blend doesn't mind a little drying out.

The leaf itself is primarily a rich reddish brown, with some lighter flecks and some black cavendish visible, and is moist and fluffy to the touch. Produces a good volume and thickness of smoke, suitable for those who like puffing smoke rings.

Overall a satisfying aromatic that's not too strong, not too sweet.

I only smoke aromatics for a change of pace from time-to-time and this is one of the better ones I have smoked. MM, a nice ribbon cut, packs easily. However, you may find that more relights will be necessary towards the bottom of the bowl because of the moisture ?problem?, a characteristic inherent with many, if not most aromatics. Puff as fast as you want, there is no bite whatsoever in this baccy. To me, the flavor and taste of this tobacco were reminiscent of Butter Rum Lifesavers, most prevalent when ?sipped.? I also find this blend very similar to McCrainie?s Currituck.

I rate this tobacco 8.5 out of 10

This is the best in the line of Premium Aromatics by McClelland IMHO. It is of course the least cased as well. The flavoring is subtle and the room note is phenomenal! The tin aroma is all chocolate and coffee to me. It definitely needs to be dried out, and even then smokes a little wetter than I prefer. I got a lot of comments when I smoked this in public, and all of them positive! I doubt I'll buy another can, but it is a worthy smoke.

This tobacco is primarily ribbon cut, althouugh I find the Black Cavendish is more of a broad cut tobacco. The tobacco is fairly easy to pack, light and smoke. A very light aroma when first opening the 50 gram tin, the freshness is what I come to expect from McClelland and this is no different.

The first puff of this tobacco had me sold as the aroma was more of a nutty aromatic, very similar if not one in the same as their Just Plain Nut in Bulk.

No tongue bite, no harshness, not overwhelming with a sickening sweet aroma, a very cool smoke in which I contribute to the Burley and the Black Cavendish. The tobacco IMO smoked very well from the first match to the last of the ash in the bowl. This is one I would recommend to someone wanting to try an aromatic for thhe first time.

Simply put, I like the tobacco

1Q in a can to me. I guess it's okay for what it is, but did nothing for me. Too many pipe cleaners were needed and too much unburned dottle left over. Might have been better in a filter pipe. I'll stick to the Danes when I want an Aromatic.

Well I've been looking for a good aromatic to go to when the situation warrants and this is it. This with out a doubt the best aromatic I've ever smoked. Excellant burn, still has some moisture but tolerable. I really love the flavor problem is I'm kind of hooked on stronger blends now. I won't keep it on hand but I won't hesitate to buy it again when I'm in the mood for it.

Mellow Mack is the best aromatics that I have smoked. I applaud McClelland Tobacco on this product. It is a all day companion for me. Pleasantly mild and tastful. I think that tongue bite is next to impossible with this blend. Short smooth puffs are the best way to savor this blend and enjoy its fragrance, all the to the bottom of the bowl. I think that this blend would please even the most vulgar in a crowd of folks.

I have never liked aromatic pipe tobacco, despite having sampled numerous flavored blends. A short while ago, however, I picked up a tin of McClelland?s Mellow Mack. It is, in my humble opinion, the best aromatic I have ever come across. Unlike most aromatics, Mellow Mack is velvety and so supple I can smoke it almost constantly. The aroma is enticing, yet nothing like the loathsome attar so often associated with aromatics.

Although I normally don't smoke aromatics, this was a pleasant change. Due to the ribbon cut, it burns quickly but not hot and without any bite. I use it @ work with a small bowl pipe for a quick smoke. Tin aroma is sweet but without the strong casings evident in others. Moisture initally is perfect and results in easy, even packing. Smokes wetter than I'd prefer and the last 25% of the bowl was soaked for me. The taste was dominated by the black cavendish and is typical of much cheaper aromatic blends with this component.
