For some reason, I like Danish style cavendishes when I'm getting drunk, and Skandinavik Full Aroma is one of the best out there.

Something about the toastiness, the slight, subtle fruitiness, the surprising zestiness of Skandinavik just marries well with getting all tipsy and playing Buck Owens too loud, annoying my neighbor.

This is a broken flake rather than a soft ribbon--also a plus in my book. Some say the fruitiness is cherry, but I don't get that. I've smoked cherry blends before and do not like them. In fact, one year I had to do a stint of therapy after smoking a pouch of Middleton's Cherry Blend. Me and cherry tobaccos don't mix well, no sir. Perhaps it's raisin? It seems like dried fruit to me, but whatever, it's yummy and I like it.

The zestiness is a nice surprise. Most cavendishes are so smooth they're boring, but not this. It's burley forward, but the Virginias are by no means overshadowed. They play an excellent supporting role. It all marries well together and shows you what a fine, affordable (very) pipe tobacco blend is all about. Better if allowed to dry, best if allowed to age a bit.

Try it with a bunch of screwdrivers on a sunny afternoon while jamming to Buck Owens. You'll see.

I am normally an English smoker, with or, more often, without Latakia. I will occasionally try an aromatic as a change of pace, but usually find that they have no taste or, if they do, it's the nasty chemical taste of artificial flavouring. Sail Yellow is practically the only aromatic I actively enjoy.

Skandinavik Full Aroma is better than most chemically flavoured tobaccos I've tried. It is well-made, Dutch-style cavendish-processed leaf with a subtle fruit note in the background. The taste is very light but it's there, and it smokes smoothly and cleanly. I submit that if you are a habitual aromatic smoker you might really enjoy this. It is also an obvious friendly choice for public smoking.

The tobaccos are processed in the cavendish style. The nutty, toasty, lightly earthy burley has a mild molasses and cocoa sweetness. The grassy, citrusy, lightly bready Virginia is a little more obvious than the burley. The Virginia also provides a minor honey note. The fruity toppings do tone down the tobaccos a bit. The nic-hit is mild. Will bite if puffed fast. Burns a little fast with a consistent flavor. I never thought it was close to Amphora Red as it lacks several aspects of AR (mainly the floralness), but I can see it kind of copies it. Two stars due to the harsh and bite issues.

I got a pouch of this free, and have smoked it in a variety of pipes. This is a very good basic cavendish with a mild sweet tobacco flavor. I hesitate to disagree with JimInks, but I find it very similar to Amphora Red, and smoked bowls back to back to make sure I was not imagining things.

To my tongue, this and Amphora Red are the same tobacco with different subtle toppings. Amphora Red has a "fruit with muted citrus" sweet note. The Skandinavik has a similar level of sweet that is hard to identify - maybe honey?

I liked this.

I liked this blend. Particularly when considering this is a drugstore blend. It is a cavendished Virginia so far as I can tell and has a nice sugary sweetness. This one will bite if pushed. I put this in the same category as Sail Yellow, Peter Stokkebye Aromatic Dutch slices or some other dutch Cavendish blends.

It is not very aromatic, but I like this. The natural tobacco flavor comes through strong and I really don't get much of a topping. It tastes more like a very sweet Virginia to me. I recommend it, but it did not blow me away.

Pouch note is strongly of dried fruits, primarily fig, with a very slight hint of candied cherry. Presentation is broken flake, a big surprise for me relative to the typical OTC "crimp" cut. Moisture content was just right.

The charring light brings out sugar and dried fruits, with a distinct apricot flavor that is reminiscent of Stanwell Melange. Unlike Melange, however, this is a more delicate blend,  burley forward, and much easier on the tongue. After the initial flavor burst of the charring light, the flavors quickly settle down and soften with the subtle cocoa of the burley counterbalancing the fruit to become what I found to be a surprisingly pleasant smoke.

This blend reminds me of a 50/50 mixture I made of Stanwell Melange and Mac Baren Burley London Blend, though milder in flavor and body. The flavors here are subtle and settle down by mid-bowl, so resist over-puffing: you won't find the flavor blast you're looking for and, as with any cased VaBur aromatic, you'll risk tongue bite. But sipping this one slowly, you'll be treated to what may be the best aromatic flavor profile out there in OTC land. Full Aroma burns nicely and cleanly: not too hot and not too wet. Little goop, though with any aromatic ghosting could be an issue.

While too mild to be a cherished smoke, I was very impressed with this blend and would definitely recommend it for aromatic smokers, those working through the OTC circuit, or those who simply desire a pleasant daytime blend with which to pass the time. An exceptional OTC aromatic in the Danish tradition: quality presentation and cut, subtle fruit and burley flavors, and good quality tobaccos.

Update 2020: I am just reacquainting myself with the on-line pipe tobacco world after taking several years off to simply enjoy and smoke through my cellar and alas, yet another classic blend put down. What a shame.

I smoked aromatics (mainly Captain Black) for years before learning the pleasures of high quality pipe tobacco. Once I discovered Virginia flakes, VaPers and English blends, I stopped smoking aromatics altogether. About five years ago, while away from home, I found myself in need of pipe tobacco and the only thing I could find that seemed half-way decent was Skandinavik Full Aroma, so I bought a can. I'm glad I did.

First of all, SFA has real, good (as in real good) tobacco flavor, which is the first thing that I look for in a pipe tobacco. Second, while an aromatic (sort of cherry favored), the flavoring takes a definite back seat to the tobacco and, as a result, enhances rather than detracts from the enjoyment of the (high quality) tobacco. SFA also has all the secondary qualities of a good pipe tobacco (correct moisture content right out the the can, easy to pack and light, burns to a clean ash, readily available and reasonably priced).

I smoke SFA mostly during the summer months. It's cheery (pardon the pun) flavor seems to complement perfectly the fun and relaxation of hanging out at the Jersey Shore. If you're looking for something a little different as a change of pace, give it a try.

I broke the seal on my pouch to find the contents dry as tinder. So I had to humidify it before smoking. I don't know if that effected my findings. The pouch smells of figs, but the smoke isn't sweet at all. I found this tobacco to be stronger than other testers rated it. I don't see how it can be called either 'Full Aroma' or 'Cavendish', as it doesn't seem to be either one. There is some nicotine. I can feel the strength of the tobacco in the back of my throat when I inhale. I thought it tasted like a strong cigarette. No tongue bite. 1star rating. Much as I like to patronize my local B&M shops, it seems that what's on the shelf isn't fresh. Maybe I'd have better luck with online retailers who have a faster turnover. UPDATE: I let my son try this. He felt it tasted like Maverick cigarettes. He also pointed out that the smoke was blue, as cigarette smoke commonly is.

When recently lining up tobacco tins to sell on my website, I discovered that this one had a broken seal. I couldn't sell it but after conferring with the consignor, I was allowed to just smoke it. I am glad I did.

This should be delightful for fans of lighter, aromatic fare. The taste is typically Danish (tastes like tobacco with a fruity background flavor), and burned clean rather than gooey. Not much punch though and I had to supplement this blend with a follow-up bowl of Five Brothers to satisfy the "Nic" craving.

Not a bad tobacco. I like the broken flake, as opposed to a ribbon cut. The flavoring is rather mild, and some won't see this as an aromatic, at least not when compared to tradition American aros. If you're in a pinch and want to smoke a lightly flavored tobacco, with a lot of natural leaf flavors coming through, you could do much worse.

Found a pouch of this hanging out in the back of my cellar...

Appearance: Popped the pouch open to find a fairly dry tobacco consisting of fairly dark ribbons. Now this pouch was unopened and still was pretty dried out so there can't be much in the way of humectants here. I didn't find any flake chunks just ribbons. Pouch smelled of sweet fruits with alcohol notes.

Packing/Smoking: Being that the tobacco was pretty dry I took caution getting a decent pack to avoid too fast/hot burning. I found Full Aroma to be a nice lightly sweetened smoke. Neither of its component parts really dominated at any one time. Hint of nutty Burley here touch of sweet grassy VA there with that steady light sweet toppping. While I smelled it in the pouch I didn't detect any fruity flavors in my experience just that typical "Danish sweetness" and a hint of an alcohol topping. The sweetness seemed to hang around to the bottom until a slightly bitter/ashy taste arrived signaling the end of the smoke. The burn rate seemed fast but I'll chock that up to the dryness of my sample. For a 'baccy labeled "Full Aroma" I doubt you'll be winning anyone over with the room note here..

Verdict: Other then a tendency to nip if overheated (again could be due to dryness) I found nothing offensive here just a typical slightly sweet VaBur smoke. Full Aroma is out-of-print now and I'm guessing few are lamenting its loss. That said, if you see a pouch it may be worth grabbing if your seeking the Danish flavor profile out..

Decided to try the full aroma because I like the regular so much. Was a nice little brick in the pouch. When I opened it up, the pouch note had a fruity wine type of smell that I couldn't nail down. Took one light after the char and burned smooth and clean to a fine white ash. The flavor of the smoke was very mild compared to the regular. More of a light Virginia flavor with a very subtle sweetness to it. It didn't bite at all, even when puffed hard. I thought it was a pleasant smoke. Not a daily one for me, but one I'll be keeping around for when the mood strikes me.

My grandfather smoked a pipe. It left a strong impression on me. I liked the room note whenever I went to his home. It was strong yet sweet. The last time I smelled it was about 25 years ago. I got into pipe smoking about 4 years ago and started sampling all different types of higher end tobacco. It never occured to me to look for my grandfather's brand because I figured it was probably an OTC brand (I know, shame on me). But recently I asked around just out of curiosity. My mother, who used to purchase tobacco for my grandfather, told me it was Skandinavik Cherry blend in a canister. I tried looking for it, but it no longer exists (or I'm just not looking in the right places). So I figured I would try another blend from Skandinavik that might resemble the cherry flavor. Unfortunately, all I could find from the five or six major online retailers was Regular and Full Aromatic. I bought them both. I opened this blend and the smell from the pouch was not pleasant. It was a strong, processed tobacco smell. It didn't smell good like a good cigar, like other aromatics, heck, like even a good cigarette. It was moist to the touch and clumpy. I tried rubbing it out, but it did not alleviate the moisture. That first smoke was horrible. It couldn't stay lit, it was hot, caused tongue bite, left a nasty room note, and it tasted awful. Strike 1. I put it in an airtight jar for a few days, then let a small amount dry outside for a few hours before I smoked it. The second smoke was better, but only slightly. It went from really bad to just kinda bad. Strike 2. I left it out to dry for 5 days and rubbed it a bit more. When I smoked it again it was much better, but just not good enough. It stayed lit with just 1 light and did not cause tongue bite. The taste and room note were non-descript, and it still smoked a bit hot. Strike 3. It's out. This is definitely NOT my grandfather's tobacco. For a Full Aromatic, it lacks flavor and good room note qualities. I won't buy it again and I don't recommend it.

Review based on a sampler I received from a friend - perhaps an ounce and perhaps too little to make an honest assessment. However....

This is where bias takes a left turn. With a name like "Full Aroma Cavendish" and my bias against such things, having been "gooped out" by a lot of American-style aromatics, I expected this one to be less to my taste than their Regular Cavendish. I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very good tasting Danish style cavendish that just happens to have a room note that others will appreciate. The virginia base here as opposed to the burley base in "Regular" seems to be the difference maker, although I enjoy burley as well. Nice long cut partially rubbed flake burns well and the taste is smooth and not overprocessed with artificialities. This is one I'll buy again. Recommended to those who don't want to sacrifice true tobacco taste for a pleasant room note. Smoke this and get both!

To begin, let me say that my tobacco preference tends to be on the stronger side. I picked up this pouch at my local cigar shop and it was pretty fresh. When you open the pouch, there is a sweet tobacco smell that is not unpleasant. It won't draw flies like some aromatics, but it is definitely sweet. The stuff packs nicely and takes a light pretty well. The first thing that you'll notice is the incredible mildness of the tobacco. There is sweetness and there is absolutely no tongue-bite. As you get going, however, there is also a lack of taste. There is a nice tobacco taste, but it is mild to a fault. The flavor is very similar to Sail Green, but a bit stronger. The casing on the leaves tends to blend in with, and not over-power, the smoke. Imagine Sail Green with a slight cherry liquor topping. The tobacco seems of decent quality for the price. I mean, come on, my pouch actually announced that I was getting 18% more free. And that's where the tobacco finds its saving grace. I found it online for $9.95 for a 9 ounce tin. By the way, that's post S-Chip. It's cheaper than Sail Green and delivers a little more taste. The room aroma reminds me of an Eastern Orthodox professor with whom I'd discuss Medieval Philosophy. He smoked exclusively Amphora Red. That is the only comparison between that tobacco and this. It takes a re-light well. The end of the smoke can be a little ashy, but your almost done anyway. A regular sized cob will smoke for about 45 minutes fully packed. I don't think I'll buy this again, but I'm not sorry I bought it.

This is one of those lost treasure blends, which I used to smoke quite a bit of. It came in both a pouch, and a lidded tin like a paint can.

It was a broken flake which was black and brown in color, and was topped with a chocolate berry taste.

I have seen this tobacco get some less than favorable press; and am not certain why. It's a nice broken flake in the Danish style, and has a smell that, to me, is of wine and cherry when opening the tin. I actually like it quite a bit! I will say that I am not certain why they named it "Full Aroma", as if find the flavor and scent, while pleasant and faintly sweet, to be quite mild. It does burn a little warm, but not overly so. Easily my favorite low-price danish blend. Easy but complex, approachable but a bit sophisticated, bright and zesty but with a dark backbone. The broken flake allows you to adjust your texture and, for me at least, makes for a cooler, smoother smoke in general. The topping (as one should expect from a danish blend) is minimal and designed to complement the natural tobacco flavors rather than cover or alter them.

This is a legit, danish cavendish and I am definitely a fan.

I received this as a free sample from STG Lane and I kind of wish I went with something else. I found this blend to be pretty bland; though, at times when I put my pipe down, it tastes as if I was drinking coffee even though I hadn't. The smell from the package was fruity, kind of like plums or figs. When I asked my family what they thought of the smell, they didn't really care for it. It didn't smell sweet or anything. I don't really know what to say about this blend other than that's it not all that great. I had to mix in some vanilla cavendish I bought a couple years ago just to give it some flavour, which has definitely made it more smokable. It just tastes a little too much like cigarettes for me and I even smell like I've been smoking them when I'm finished with my pipe. One nice thing though with this blend when I received it was the moisture was perfect and it stays lit really well.

All in all, personally I'd give it a one star but I'm giving it two because I'm not fond of burley and someone else may be.

Oh! Also, NEVER retro-hale with this. It has some kind of ammoniated smell to it and really did a number on my nasal passage.

What a wonderful surprise this tobacco turned ouut to be! I'd somehow missed this one over three decades of pipe smoking and I'm sorry I did. Full aroma offers up a great tobacco taste with a light fruit topping that tends to burn off as it's smoked. It's never overpowering (in fact you can almost forget your smoking asn aromatic) or gooey and doesn't muck up the pipe. Some reviews have compared this to Amphora's full aroma but I remember that one well and I don't see it. It does remind me of an aromatic I smoked in the 1970's but I'll be damned if I can remember the name or brand. I think it may have been the Sobranie aro of the time. This is a very good smoke. When one considers that the price is about half of some other top shelf blends it becomes a great smoke! If you ever smoke aro tobacoos give this one a try. You won't be sorry.

A four and a half ounce tin of Skandinavik Full Aroma was gifted to me some two years ago. I do not know how long it would have waited to be smoked in normal circumstances, but a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the inner foil sealing of the paint tin type of packing had swollen enough to eject the outer top. This was unique in my experience. Upon piercing the foil lining there was an escape of gas. The aroma of the tobacco was heavy and winish - somewhat like that of Momoyama.

In a week's time the odour of fermentation was gone, leaving behind a nice light aroma of fruit, predominantly cherry. I have been smoking it for more than a week now. As aromatics go, Full Aroma goes reasonably well. The casing is mildly applied, and the tobacco burns dry and - for an aromatic - fairly cool. But for all these virtues the tobacco itself is not of very high quality. Amphora scores over it in this regard.

In all fairness I must add that I do not know exactly what I am reviewing: does fermentation in the tin substantially alter the character of the tobacco, and if so, for better or for worse?

Skan. Full Aroma… Putting aside the chatter about cost, what it's similar too, whether it can be purchased in a drugstore or country of origin… I find this blend quite nice, in spite of its pedigree. Nice full Virginia taste, with some familiar U.S. burley signatures. To my way of thinking this is a well crafted blend. Its aroma is pleasant, and shows up in the taste only in a low keyed way, allowing the tobaccos, front row. My only complaint is, this stuff with very little effort can bite. So slow controlled puffing is a must, along with a little thumb action, to snuff out the oxygen supply monetarily, to slow down the burn rate. For me, this type of blend is best enjoyed in a nice comfortable recliner, to help me keep my mind on the business at hand. Sure seems like a awful lot of fuss, just to have a smoke, when a person can just stuff a cob with PA and mindlessly puff away, but change is sometimes nice. I don't know what I expected form this blend, but was certainly pleasantly surprised as to what I got. Most of my favorites are not this full flavored, and prefer something milder (easier) for most accessions, but will have no problem fitting this in from time to time. Recommended. 3 stars.

The flake cut is great, and crumbles very easily between my fingers. This tobacco is a pleasure to pack, all the while inhaling the scent as I crumble it over my desk.

It can get hot fast, so I have to take it easy and not draw too deeply. For the price, this is a winner if you want a very mild smoke.

Let me also mention that there is nothing "bunk" about this blend. A lot of locally available tobaccos that I've tried lately have been of poor quality, regardless of price. This one delivers a clean taste through and through.

Simple, Cheap, and much higher quality than many American OTC's. Never bit me either. Good stuff, glad I bought it.

Ahhh Skandinavik...I remember when the "regular" made its US debut as an OTC exotic in an orange & black wrapper at groceries and drug stores back in the 60s. It was a satisfying blend then and this fuller, richer aro version follows the tradition. And in these Great Recession days who can resist the marketing allure of "18 % more tobacco" in the 1.5 oz. tri-fold?

Agree with a couple of reviewer comrades that this tobac is better in a smaller bowl and needs to be sipped as it can roast on the heavy draw. Found it to be an excellent mixer, satisfying my craving for sweet and fruity aro blends. Added some "condiment" Paladin Black Cherry and it kicked up the taste quite superbly. Solid, steady smoking pleasure from our Danish friends. Happy hunting...

I just finished entering my review for Skandinavik Regular and the Full Aroma is my second foray with the Skandinavik line. Similar to their Regular with regard to tin packaging which I liked very much. This very fresh broken flake was not as coarse as the Regular - almost half-width, short ribbon. There was a mild fruity tin note which was quite pleasant, almost plum-like.

Like with Regular, filling and lighting were a breeze. Full Aroma was more Virginia forward than the Regular, but very mild as Virginias go. It was a much fuller smoking experience than the Regular and did not smoke harsh for me. It had a nice spiciness to it. A mild fruitiness did translate into the smoke, along with a mild tobacco presence with that. Not a cloying aromatic by any means. Is Full Aroma better than Regular? Not necessarily, as it depends what you are after. A simple, unadulterated smoke would be best served by Regular. If you want an aromatic presence with some flavoring, Full Aroma would fit the bill nicely. Although I prefer the Regular overall, I can recommend either as a pleasant smoking experience - especially recommended for newbies to pipe smoking. I can't say if Full Aroma is similar to Amphora Red as noted by several reviewers, since I never had the opportunity to try that tobacco. Although milder than what I am used to, I would sum it up as a solid smoking experience.

Class stuff if you are looking for a pleasant, mild smoke of aged and pressed Va/Burley. It has a very mild fig-like flavor and aroma and a slight spice when you blow it through your nose. No very complex or mind-blowing. Just simple and pleasurable. Enjoy this weed while working in the yard, while you are too distracted to enjoy something more complex.

I'm notvery talented with Flake as of yet. I spent most of my tin of Skandinavik with messed up taste buds, and a sore throat. But i remember a few times when i smoked it ( i think i put the tobaccoinmy palm and put the bowl over the tobacco ands wept in a circular motionto load the bowl, and used a very light tamp) alternating between light sips annd thick gulps of this tobacco and it was awesome! Smelled almost of dark chocolate, i could even taste hints of vanilla and chocolate. It was the bestsmoking experience i've had thus far. but as i said it was only a few times, definatley can't smoke it like an OTC.

Smoked a pouch of this blend when I first started my venture into pipe smoking and used it as a mid-step between aromatics and natural tobaccos. Now I strictly enjoy VA, VAPer and English blends but recently bought this blend in the tin as I was attracted to the price and hopes of recreating the pleasant experience I had years ago. The tobacco is at perfect moisture level right out of the tin and has a very pungent berry, almost grape smell. I've been smoking this blend in a wide-deep bowled Peterson knock-off pipe and have only needed one charring light to smoke this blend to the bottom. Despite the strong tin aroma, the flavor in smoking is very mild, natural Virginia and Burley sweetness with no berry tones but some cocoa and honey flavors. This blend does smoke hot and fast even with gentle puffing but has not bitten yet. Perhaps this has to do with my own body chemistry as I have never actually experienced tongue bite even with the hottest of smokes. I noticed some nicotine effect near the bottom of the bowl but I leave it to the fact that I was smoking a very large bowl. Overall, a very mild, natural tobacco with OK burning characteristics. Easy to forget about though and a little too one-dimensional in taste for this smoker to give it anything more than two stars.

I confess: I purchased SFA based on the very attractive price requested at pipesandcigars.com. Usually, I do not fancy aromatics, with the execption of Solani's Whiskey, Peterson's Irish Whisky and Sweet Killarny, but I could absolutely not resist the price.

I was not disappointed. It turned out to be a very successful bet! SFA is a very nice rubbed out flake composed of golden, light and medium brown leaf exhaling a subtle cherry and vanilla aroma combined with some natural tobacco tones which suggests a toppping rather than casing.

Lighting up and smoking are child's play. It behaves remarkably well, tastes of subtle cherry, vanilla and natural tobacco and burns clean down without gooping up the pipe, leaving fine gray ashes. It does not get stronger as you work your way down. As a matter of fact, typical of this type of aromatics, it will loose some of it flavor and become a bit more unidimensional. But this remains common among the aromatic leaves.

I haven't experienced any type of tongue biting, but that is probably because I fill in my pipe with the tobacco a bit more packed than usual. Sometimes the fact of packing too loosely will result in tongue biting, independently of the tobacco used.

Not only will I finish this tin, but I will buy again when I fancy a mild smoke. It represents a half decent daily smoke that does not require attention, and is non-smoker friendly for the most part.

Recommended for those who prefer a tobacco that is mildly topped and mild in flavor, especially the new comers to pipe smoking. 2 1/2 stars.

Well the trick to this is to place a very loose wa in the pipe and just lightly press with the finger. It should look like it isn't going to stay lit. Go slow and it doesn't bite or get hot. My best pipe for this is a Bjarne Houston develops the flavor and stays very cool. This is a regular for me, but the experience is not earth shattering, just a comfortable all day tobacco that doesn't get old.

Upon opening the can one is greeted with a faint cherry and sweet natural Virginia aroma. This tobacco is in the class of a mild and fragrant Danish style, and the flavors can elude if not sipped slowly. I find this performs best in a Danish freehand with a conical shaped chamber. I wonder if the Danes design their pipes for the styles of tobacco they often produce. I find this tobacco to taste like it smells- sweet Virginia high notes with a hint of what one reviewer described as real cherry flavor. I don't classify this as an aromatic myself, but rather a nice Virginia with a hint of toasty Burley that really evolves throughout the smoke. The hint of natural cherry seems to complement the high notes of the Virginia for a clean, cool and refreshing smoke. I find that devoting a pipe to this blend alone brings out the subtle flavors. I puff away like a steam engine, and have had no tongue bite. I love the rubbed out flake, ready for service. There are no low notes to be found, and I find that after the can has been opened for some time, the tobacco darkens slightly and the flavors round out a bit. It burns cleanly and easily, with no gurgle. If one likes Virginia's, this is a good addition to the rotation when a dark and brooding mature Virginia is not called for. I do recommend it. Update 6/2014...... I no longer find this blend as enjoyable, so downgrade to 2 stars.

This tobacco while not bad, is not great either. I found it to be lacking in any real taste, and yes it will bite you if you puff too fast.

If you are in a real pinch for a quick smoke this might fit the bill, but there are better choices.

PROS - The price is the very good especially if you buy the big tubs. It is also a high quality tobacco that tastes a little sweet but the fresh "hay" flavor comes through with a little nutiness from the burley. It has a very pleasant room note and burns very well.

Cons - It is not too complex and will bite if smoked too fast.

Finally picked up a package of this and was favorably suprised. I've been smoking the Mildly Aromatic stuff occasionally and have really enjoyed it, so when I saw this I naturally picked up a pouch. Now I didn't notice the "overwhelming fruity aroma" that some have described, although it is certainly an aromatic. Nicely cut with a good moisture content, I pack a billiard with ease with little or no rub out and can puff away contentedly for at least an hour. Faint whisps of fruit, like a pie baking in the kitchen tickle up the nose while a satisfying-enough base of real tobacco flavor lays on the tongue. At no point was I bitten by this Dane.

As far as such things go, I think this is pretty good tobacco. Farly cheap, available and certainly undemanding, I think this fits into a league with sail green and Skandinavik Blue. Could be an all day smokefor me, honestly, were I not so enamoured with other things.

I find that all of this style of tobacco actually taste better when smoked out of smaller (narrow) bowls...i.e tall narrow billiards or cobs...smoking them out of big wide bowls does strange things to their taste and burning characteristics.

P.S- Try throwing a flake of penzance into a couple pinches of this...WOW...

UPDATE- 1.28.10: My supply has transitioned over to the new Orlick blend with the updated packaging. Wow...unbelievably, it's a much nicer blend now and I enjoy it even more. A little more flavor, alot less bite and more quality weed with a better virginia component (and a lower price!). I have been stocking up in bulk pack pouches from JR and this has morphed into an all day, go to smoke for me. I've discovered that eyeball mixing 2/3 Skan FAC with 1/3 McClelland blending Oriental makes for a tremendously wonderful aromatic smoke with the exotic sandalwoody notes of the oriental carrying over into the fruit topping of the Skan in a wonderful way. Try it...

Update 4/25/12- Purchased a bunch of packets bulk from JR a few years ago (probably 15 of them). Have been smoking them on and off for a while and purchasing packets here and there locally, and I'm still impressed. It has certainly become my go-to smoke. Excellent, and despite the almost absurd increase in tobacco prices in NY, still fairly reasonable in the local smokeshops. Seems to get more distinctly pleasantly "cherry" as the packets age on the shelf in my cellar.

10/28/2004: I give this four stars only as an Aromatic. It is one of the dry non-goopy aromatics that has a lighter touch of flavor than the U.S. types. I bought a pouch of this after reading some other reviews. It is a big step up from Capt. Black, etc. The Virginia component is quite pronounced, even forward. I smoked this in a very small pipe which worked perfectly for this relatively strong blend. The flavor is a bit stronger than other Danish-style Aromatics so keep this out of your most valued pipes until you decide if it's a keeper. I will happily smoke the remainder of this pouch on an occasional basis, then probably not buy another. I prefer Virg. flakes or Balkan-English type blends most of the time, though this was a very nice changed of pace.

11/17/2006 Update: No longer in my rotation. Still a decent Aromatic.

To me, skandinavic red is an excellent tobacco. It blows mac baren's cherry ambrosia out of the water as far as I'm concerned. A very nice, earthy base of virginia and burley with a wonderful fruity sweetness lingering in the background. A little bit bitey, but no worse than most danish blends. I've never tried amphora red so I can't compare the two, but I highly recommend this to anyone who likes this kind of tobacco. I don't know why it isn't more popular than it is.

I don't recall the old Amphora tasting like this, but it has been 30 years. This blend seems high quality with a strong fruit juice taste. Not artificial cherry, like maraschino, but the way cherries actually taste: sourish. I recall the original Amphora had a more oriental taste which I crave. As far as cherry blends go, I prefer this natural flavoring approach to the candy-like Middleton or Paladin.

This scratches an itch I sometimes get for an aromatic, and I'm glad to have it on hand, but it ultimately fails as a regular.

Update 4/05 I have bowls of Amphora red fresh from Holland and Skan red both burning. They are both cavendishes with fruity toppings, but the similarity ends there. Nah. Not the same at all. Not even particularly close. Amphora rocks. Skan... ok. Skan's topping is 3x as strong in the container and the pipe and smells different as well. Skan has more virginia character. Amphora is less fruity and more... sweet? floral?

I typically smoke English blends, whether they be Latakia-spiced or pure Virginia flakes, so this blend is a step or two away from what I typically enjoy.

However...this is a very nice, high-quality Aromatic, really. The Virginia component is nicely preserved here - and this is so far above a "drug store blend" that it deserves to be recognized as such.

If you like the PS Luxury series (which I do), think of this as a sweeter, slight step down. It's a prefect choice when you need a change of pace from the Latakia or straight VA world and want something a little on the sweet side, but not so overbearingly sweet that it drowns out the Virginia notes.

JR Cigars (and others) sell this for a bargain price, so it's a fine blend for those on a budget as well. A similar, high-quality, inexpensive smoke is SAIL - YELLOW, but I think this blend has more character and a slightly nicer room note.

A nice Virginia-based blend at a very competitive price. Good job, PS!!

In my early days as a pipier, Amphora Red was my staple tobacco. So I was curious to see how another big red can of Scandanavian tobacco would smoke. Conclusion: bitier, and with not nearly the flavor of the old Amphora Red. Skandanavik skates by on a smidge of cherry flavor, while Amphora, with its "whiff of pure fruit blossom" is tastier, smoother, and sweeter. Amphora also contains Kentucky and Oriental tobaccos for a little fuller taste with less tendency to bite.

Skandanavik is a dry, quality tobacco that smokes down to a white ash. It just burns too hot and, ultimately, it's not Amphora Red, or even that close. Worthy effort and recommended to aromatic fanciers looking to step up. Note, though, that this tobaco can really bite--it bit me, consistently, even though after a few bowls, I smoked it slowly in Peterson system pipes.

This blend is a surprisingly high quality offering for an OTC blend. The pouch aroma reminds me of lightly spiced raisins, and that flavor comes through the smoke as well. The pouch I bought had enough flavoring that I could taste it quite easily without lighting it. The moisture level was good, and it packs easily, reminding me of some of Rattray's broken flakes. I could see this as a good blend for those who appreciate discreetly cased aromatics, or as a warm weather smoke, or perhaps a nice change of pace. It burns warm, so don't puff too hard. No goop or gurgle, but the essence does linger a bit in the pipe. Don't let my rating fool you, the quality is quite good. I just won't smoke this often.

Full aroma? You have gotta be kidding me! Even though the tin description does not give any clues as to what to expect in terms of aroma, I figured that, given its association to Peter Stokkebye, it would be acceptable to interesting. So I ordered it and opened the paint-can tin expecting, well, a full aroma. WRONG! There was almost no nose, even of tabacco. It was kind of dry as well. It was not until I read here that it was supposedly a cherry aromatic that I had a clue as to its supposed topping.

And the taste? Well, kind of flat. neither the best of burley or virginia. It is not offensive, just kind of nondescript. Maybe I got a bad batch, I don't know. Others seem to find it a good product. I remain openminded enough to try some from someone else's tin sometime, but I do not see me purchasing it again, unless future tastings give me a diffferent impression.

Skan Full Aroma was somewhat of a surprise to me. I was waiting for a gawdawful blast of cherry on light up but received a sweet "firm" hint of it. But then it quickly calmed into a very pleasant slightly dominated VA blend with a consistant but mild cherry background. This blend is one of very few pouch tobaccos that I would smoke on a regular basis. It, like it's sister tobacco (Skan Regular), is not a "drug store blend". This tobacco is good quality and could be an all day smoke to some. If your beginning to get away from the candy smokes and into the VA blends; this blend is a good start. It's now an occasional to weekly for me. My recommendation will probably go up on this one. A real surprise!

Since Imperial Tobacco Group, PLC stopped exporting Amphora to the USA as part of their purchase of Douwe Egberts from Sara Lee, Peter Stokkebye attempted to match the old Holland formula and has product available in the USA @ ~ prices. They've done a good job of matching Full Aromatic in the red pouch/tin. Refer to the Amphora reviews or if you enjoyed that blend or like aromatic but balanced Cavendish, give this one a try. The golden to reddish brown partially broken flake smokes evenly and cool with no bite. A sweet, fruity pouch aroma carries thru during the inital stages of the smoke but does not overpower the undertones of natural tobacco that become more prominent during the smoke. A good everyday smoke, especially in the warmer weather.
