The fragrant Syrian Latakia provides smoke, wood, earth, some floral incense, and a musty, wine-like sweetness as the lead component. The pungent Orientals offer floralness, earth, wood, herbs, vegetation, a moderate amount of spice, some buttery sweetness and dry sourness as an important supporting player. The tangy ripe dark fruity, woody, earthy, bready, sugary red Virginia is a little more obvious than the fermented dark fruity, earthy, woody, bready sugary stoved Virginias. The Virginias sit in the third position with a little competition from the spicy, raisiny, plumy, earthy, woody perique, which also has a touch of figs and sugar. The Virginias also give the Orientals a run for their money, too. The strength, nic-hit, and taste levels are medium. No chance of bite or harshness, and has few rough edges. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable rate with a mostly consistent, deeply rich sweet and savory, lightly sour, campfire flavor that extends to the pleasantly lingering after taste, and stronger room note. Barely leaves any dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. The veteran would likely consider this to be an all day smoke, provided a tin of it could be found.
