The fifteen year old Syrian Latakia provides smoke, wood, earth, a few leathery notes, and a sweet wine-like essence. By a step or two, it stands out over the musty, smoky, woody, earthy, sweet Cyprian Latakia. The very spicy, woody, earthy, fairly floral, dry, lightly sweet and more sour Orientals are the next important varietals as they offer close competition for the Latakias. The grassy, hay-like, citrusy Virginia is a rung above being a condiment. The strength is a couple of slots below the medium mark, while the taste is just short of the medium level. The nic-hit is almost as potent as the strength. No chance of bite or harshness, but has a few minor rough edges. Being a shag cut, it burns a little fast, cool and clean with a very consistent, mildly sweet and rather smoky, spicy, savory campfire flavor that translates to the lightly lingering pleasant after taste. Requires few relights, and barely leaves a hint of dampness in the bowl. An all day smoke with some depth. Three and a half stars.
