Continuing my recent trek down memory lane, the latest stop was with Field & Stream. As OSR mentioned, William Serad recently reviewed these House of Windsor blends in P&T magazine. Like Sir William, I did not taste licorice as I smoked a few pipefuls of F&S. Unlike Sir William, I found F&S to be ordinary although I agree it is unique. Typical of most "less expensive" Burley blends, this one got a tad bitter as I completed the bowl. Though an aromatic, it never tasted particularly sweet either. I appreciated the true tobacco taste and heavier than normal nicotine content.

The pouch contained leaf just as OSR described, and I'll add that mine was quite dry. The blend also smoked on the warm side, which is unusual for a Burley. Hope I don't wake up with tongue bite!

I doubt I'll finish the pouch because this one didn't ring my chimes. I will enjoy another bowl or two before moving on. I will not, however, be smoking it to the bitter end!

This blend was fairly soapy and even more perfumy with an anise/licorice topping. While it lingered to the end, it became less intense by the half way point, and a nutty, earthy, woody burley became more prominent, though still fairly sublimated. I barely noticed the black and gold cavendish outside of hints of vanilla, grass, tart citrus, and sugar. The Virginia notes were few and far between, except for a little grassiness and tart and tangy citrus. There was a slight maple flavor here, too. The strength and taste levels were medium. The nic-hit was a couple of steps past the mild mark. Fast puffing could produce a light harshness. Burned pretty warm and rough at a moderate pace. Left little moisture in the bowl, and required an average number of relights. Because it fell just short of the tongue bite stage, sipping it produced better results. Had a decent after taste, a pungent room note, and was not quite an all day smoke.

What a delightful surprise!!

A problem I (meaning my tongue) have with many of the American "drug store" blends is the cut of the tobacco. Wee flakes which burn quite rapidly leaving me often liking the flavour but unable to withstand the heat. And I'm sure that the sensation isn't helped by whatever chemicals are often added for moisture control and taste.

I'm presuming that this is a fairly long-standing problem which lead to the profusion of system and filter pipes in the bygone days.

Such measures are not needed for Field and Stream.

The tobacco is presented in a rather unique cut, I betray my inexperience by being unable to name it; perhaps "cube cut" would do, although there are a profusion of the little flakes. The taste of the tobacco is there, not overwhelming, but not shy either. The aromatic additive is quite like the one applied to Mixture 79. If you like Mixture 79 but had found it to be too hot to handle, here's your answer.

I believe I'll be stepping up from the 39 gram package (Shame about that! It really should be 1 1/2 ounces!) to the "bucket" size. I really am quite happy I gave this one a try!

I remember this stuff from the '70's, tasted odd, sort of like it might be GOOD for you ! ! Because it reminded me of a Cough Medicine !! The Licorice/Anise smell-taste is there to a degree, but this pipe tobacco always sent my tongue " out to pasture " every time I tried to get along with it. I recall trying mixing it up with ' Sugar Barrel ' and got absolutely/positively NOWHERE !! !! I think my next stop after this was ' Borkum Riff ' or maybe ' Amphora '.

The tub aroma hints strongly at licorice with herbal background notes. The cut is a well-fabricated, coarse, crimp-cut burley cavendish with a minimal amount of residual fines. The coarse chunks are probably best broken in order to facilitate burning and ensure proper airflow.

This is a pure burley blend which is heavy on the licorice and flavored with maple syrup, presumably. Herbal extracts lend a fresh, clean impression. The burley is of very good quality: smooth, rich, and husky.

Field & Stream is an excellent blend which is made all the more ingratiating by the flavorsome additives. This will quickly ghost a briar and was best in a narrow gauge chamber.

They should change the name to TRASH AND SINK. I think I may have smokes 2 pipefulls, before dumping it (not into the stream, since I wouldn't be so cruel to the fish).

I have not said enough bad words as a child to aquire a taste for SOAP! I don't want to smoke it as an adult. I refuse to "aquire" a taste for something to "fit in" (been there, done that). If I wanted to smoke soap, I would take up crack and buy it from my nutty neighbor.

This re-issue from House of Windsor is very welcome to this old-timer. The dryness was ideal for me, and the pipe stays lit very,very well. My daughter and her children came into my den and she says "that smells nice, you should smoke it more often!"

After a charring light and then lighting it fully, it burned evenly to the bottom of the bowl with no re-light. No bite and very good taste. Try it!!

Frankly, I don't understand the hate for this. If you like Lakeland tobacco and other strong flavors F & S is not so strange. I really like anise/licorice and maybe that's the reason I enjoy this tobacco. It reminds me of Avanti cigars, which are another favorite of mine. This has become my usual "fishing smoke," and I bought a few tins right after it went out of production. I find the licorice and maple flavorings delicious, and while not a complex smoke by any means it is a great outdoor tobacco due to its partial cube cut and refreshing taste. If you don't like licorice or highly flavored aromatics stay away from F & S; if you want to enjoy a great old classic I recommend this one.

I bought a can of this stuff because some one had told me it was Gerald Fords favorite tobacco and I thought, "if its good enough for a president"; I was wrong there are presidents who do not have a taste for a good smoke. I thought that it might have been the worst stuff that I ever had; not trying to be a wise guy, I just didn't like the tobacco. I normally don't smoke aromatics but even so it was a very unpleasant experience. Guess that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. Sorry Gerry

One of the things I like about aromatic tobaccos is that they take me on a trip down memory lane. They say that smell is the strongest trigger of memory. In the case of this tobacco I certainly found that to be the case, though I can't say it was a great memory trip. The pouch aroma of the blend is quite pleasant. The color of the tobacco ranges from a golden brown to a deep brown, though the overall look is pretty consistent. In appearance, the tobacco is somewhere between a cube cut and a rubbed out cube cut. Though I found my sample to be slightly dry, it was not overly so, and packs nicely into a pipe. The first memories brought up by the blend hit me with the charring light, and remained as I got into the smoke. I was taken back to my days in college, when I had a roommate who almost constantly burned incense. The taste I was hit with was exactly what I would have expected his incense to taste like. And I asked him to not burn the stuff when I was in the building. Not the room, anywhere in the building. A second memory came to me deeper into the bowl, taking me back further into my childhood. It was the memory of the smell of the plastic that the old G. I. Joe's were made of. Again, what I tasted seemed like what that plastic probably would have tasted like. And then I thought of an album I had, vinyl, of course, which would have fit the tobacco – Frank Zappa's "Weasels Ripped My Flesh." Except, of course, I liked the album. By the end of the bowl the flavor was becoming acrid, as some aromatics are prone to doing. I am a great admirer of William Serad, and both envy his job and admire his ability to review tobaccos. However, if memory serves he spoke reasonably well of this blend. I wish I could agree with him. House of Windsor deserves our support, and this blend has some fans. Unfortunately, for me it simply doesn't work.

I am currently hunting down the remaining Field & Stream, purchasing this beauty to savor, add life to bland blends, lift my spirit, dry out my nostrils. A little Field & Stream will flavor a pipe bowl for quite some time to come, so be careful. If you do not like black jelly-beans, stay away from this. I happen to love black jelly-beans. I also love anise/fennel. Onion, fennel, venison liver/heart, little salt and pepper..,who has it better? When fresh, yes it was pungent in aroma and did offer what I am reading from the younger smokers, "soap dish" flavor. Get a piece of paper. Lay out the Field & Stream on the sheet, and spread it with the flat of your palm as thin as you can get it to fit the paper size. Leave it alone, overnight. The next mid-morning, the heavy "soapy" flavor is tamed a bit. Casing of Anise, that's all. I've thrown more of this out over the years, and today regret every bit I discarded. I had an uncle who was a tanker and professional soldier. He told me that Field & Stream was one of the most sought after pipe tobaccos because it is one of the aromas you never smell in combat. It was a smell, of home. He always grabbed what I was chucking away. The flavor is Licorice. The room note, fantastic. When sipped, I love it. Too bad I had to wait for my tastebuds to mature. Smoke rolled through the nostrils will dry out the sinuses and each Spring, it is a staple in my pipes. Have any really bad tasting pipe tobacco? Simply place a good pinch in your palm, rub both hands together, and add the rubbed Field & Stream into your undesirable blend. It will truly make the unwanted mixture, very pleasant. I rate this at Three Stars. Another loss, since House of Windsor closed the business. Every time I smoke it, I think of Easter, Christmas Day, and the Beloved Ronald Reagan, who was a black jelly-bean lover; The simpler things, and simple times, we recall to memory every so often.

I had to try this for the same reason others did. It was a transport back to the past. Upon opening I was met with a soapy, flowery aroma which I found quite nauseating. Lighting up and smoking wasn't much better. So much for nostalgia and F&S.

I have to admit though, I do like the artwork on the tin!

I am sure your parents, like mine, always said if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. Well, I always assumed they were referring to people, not tobacco. I ordered a 2 ounce tin of this from Iwan Ries back in August of 06. I went on some sort of drugstore tobacco spree, trying out the old "classics". First impression of this tin was someone spilled Palmolive soap in this tin. Throwing caution into the wind, I packed it in a cob (no way I am taking chances in a briar) and proceeded to set fire.... I felt like Ralphie from "The Christmas Story" after dropping the "F" bomb. That is really all I remembered, was soap.

Now, July 2nd 2009, I decided to visit the tin again. I opened it up, and the contents were BONE dry, almost powder. The soap subsided, and once again, packed into a cob and lit her up. Not nearly as bad as the last episode, no more soap, and no tongue bite. Decent room note too! But the only reason I fail to rate this any higher is tobacco should be ready to smoke out of the package, not after two years of dry storage. It also leaves a funny cigarette ash feeling/taste in my mouth I do not care for.

I've been looking to try this tobacco for a long time, given that it is no longer available. Alas, House of Windsor is no more. I remember my father and grandfather smoking this when I was a child. I finally happened upon a lone 12 oz. tub of F&S in a tobacco store in Salem, MA and bought it immediately! Upon opening, I caught the distinct aroma of woods and flowers and noted that the tobacco itself was in rectangular chunks. Unusual. So I rubbed it out well and put it in my Bjarne pipe.

WOW! I was instantly transported back to riding with my family to New Hampshire with my dad smoking this in his bowl! There is a preliminary blast of floral sweetness that some have interpreted as "perfumy" but that soon settles down to a most unusual and original smoke. The secret to enjoying this mostly burley blend is rubbing it out well and smoking slowly. I do have a "match" from Altadis but its really no match. The room note gets compliments every time.

Try this if you can find it. And if you find it, please let me know if they have another tub/pouch/tin. I'll be looking for more!

Man o man I loved this blend when it came in the big royal blue tub. It was such a chunky blend that reeked of licorice but in a good way. Burned cool and the room note was fantastic. Even the tub was so sturdy, nothing like todays tubs. Then came HOW version which was good too, different, smaller cut and different topping but still delicious. I have tried the Sutliff Great Outdoors and it is similar to the HOW offering but nowhere near the original F&S. I search Ebay monthly and never see an original tin and its heartbreaking but the HOW pops up time to time so I am content to buy that.

This is for MATCH field and stream from pipeandcigar.com. I cut this by a third with a fine Virginia blend to mellow out the licorice and maple notes and then dried it out to just shy of moist. The smoke was tasty leaving a good aftertaste on the palette. This is a SLOW smokers blend that stayed lit and burned to fine ash all the way to the last bit. It worked best with a narrow bowl and Cobs. It gets hot but not so much to bite the tounge if dried right. If you don't like black licorice or maple then this is not for you. If you don't like to blend it with some fine Virginia and dry it just right then move along. The curious flavor and easy smoking was good to me and my stash is marked for fishing, lol.

Found a 2 oz tin of this and jumped on it, as it is one of those old HOW blends that often produce hits. This one was mostly a walnut-brown colored crimp cut, close to a cube. Tin aroma was mostly licorice with a strong hint of mustiness.

Properly dried out, this is kind of a Mixture #79-lite blend. The perfuminess was diminished and the flavor was a relaxed kind of licorice/maple. Sounds weirder than it tasted. Sort of non-commital, but definitely preferable to moist out of the tin, where the taste was profoundly soapy. The best part about this one was the room aroma which all 3 of my kids described independently as like cookies. Indeed, there was a pleasant, homey sort of smell to it in the room. Nothing special, this one, but I didn't find it as bad as a lot of people. Worth a try if you can find it and you're curious about these old-timey OTC blends. For me, decent but not repeatable.

Smoked right out of a freshly opened tin it reminded me of dish soap and cheap perfume. There was an odor of anise that got lost somehow after I had lit up, and I hid the tin in the the corner of my basement. Several months later I came across it and decided to give it another go before I tossed it out. It had changed during that time, the soapy perfumely aromoa was gone and I could taste some anise. Unfortunalty I could also taste the maple which I personally did not care for.

This is a relatively highly flavored cube cut burly. Unlike many aromatics it is not doused with artificial moisteners, it is dry out of the can or pouch. It burns cool with no bite. Many reviewers have compared this to the much maligned Mixture 79, there are similarities but also critical differences. As with Mixture 79 at first light there is an initial explosion of flavor, but as the bowl progresses this fades and the burly comes to the front. Personally I find the flavor (most often described as licorice, which works for me) pleasant indeed. This blend will certainly ?ghost? a briar, which since I much enjoy the flavor is not a problem for this piper. I smoked this years ago when offered by Phillip Morris, and find the House of Windsor version to be faithful to its heritage. As I work through my stash will have to seek out one of the ?matches?.

Update: I've smoked most of my 2 oz. tin, and I can really say that I enjoy this tobacco. The perfume and soapy taste seems to stay in the background while smoking. I find the flavor pleasant. I probably will try to have this on hand for an occasional smoke. Best in a corncob.

Original review: I just received the HOW sampler (I've had a hard time finding this, and had to order it online)and this is the first tobacco I opened. Although I've had a cold or flu all week, I know my senses of taste and smell have been affected adversely. However, getting this package in the mail today has been the high point of my week.

Objectively, I could notice the old lady perfume aroma in the tin and the soapy taste while smoking. I could not taste the licorice others have experienced, however, the tobacco seems to be of good quality. It seems to be a milder version of Mixture No. 79, of which I'd say milder is better.

I'll give it initially two stars, and will update when my taste & smell are back to normal.

My first two-ounce tin of F&S was bequeathed to me as a holiday gift from a professional acquaintence a few years back when I had first started pipe-smoking. I was so excited to open the tin up (having never had a tin before, only cheap mall tobacconist pouches full of shredded tinder). Immediately, the aroma wafted from the tin and enchanted me. I can't catagorize the aroma definitively, but I certainly would not characterize it as "old lady perfume" or "soap". I think "floral" is more accurate. However one chooses to describe it, I found it heavenly. I'm sure that smoking F&S, back when my only concern was not enduring the embarassment of having the pipe go out, I burned my mouth, esophagus, and had the kind of tongue bite that only a bear trap can deliver. Despite the pain, that delicious aroma kept me wanting more. But a years-long haitus from smoking ensued, and those memories are lost.

I am now a far more experienced and patient man. And this is key. About the time I chose to re-enter the life of bowl and stem, I was on my way to my father's boat for a canyon fishing trip (60 miles off the NJ shore). I passed Greentree Tobacco in Washington Township (a wonderful place for pipe-smokers in South Jersey) and eagerly picked up another two-ounce tin of F&S, and a Corncob pipe (I wasn't about to lose one of my two briars overboard). That was a about 6 weeks ago, and I am just about finished the tin. Here are my thoughts:

I love this blend. My enjoyment of pipe smoking comes less from nuanced tastes than from the overall sensory experience of smoking, and it is this holistic view that lends itself to really enjoying F&S. As noted throughout the reviews, the tin art is wonderful. Just fall into the scene and everything will be okay in this world. Every time I open the tin, from the first opening to just this evening when only a couple pipes-full of tobacco are left, I am greeted by an aroma I wish I could bottle. Closing my eyes and inhaling the heavenly vapors, I am transported to a wild-flower laden field next to a gurgling stream. I'm in heaven. I look into the tin and find hearty chunks of tobacco, colored as if I just splashed my warm mug of coffee with a touch of cream, and the carmel and darker brown colors are mingling together. I reach in and feel the satisfying texture betwixt my fingers, and watch it fill my bowl. The light releases the aroma, and I sit, relax, and just enjoy the sight of the curling smoke licking at the currents of air on my back deck, the smell of the smoke, and the feel of a comfortable pipe in my hand and my mouth. The complete sensory experience. Is there anything better?

Some notes on smoking F&S:

Experiment! After packing light and heavy and everywhere in between, I find filling to the top, tamping down lightly to 3/4 full, then overfilling and tamping down to full is best. Using a heavy hand on the tamper never gave me good results. After lighting, I make judicial use of the tamper, making sure that the tobacco doesn't expand too much as it burns down the bowl.

Experiment with pipes as well. I've had the best smokes of my life with F&S in my Missouri Meerschaum. Something about the briars that keeps F&S from burning well for me.

While I do get bitten now and again, everything about the smoking experience with F&S keeps me wanting to learn how to smoke it better.

One week ago, I would have rated the strength as Mild, but three days ago, after puffing away in a particularly determined manner, my head swam for an hour.

I'm a poor judge of room note, since I always smoke outside. I base my 'pleasant' response on the fact that I love catching whiffs of the smoke in my nose, and that my wife, who hates that I smoke at all, said, in reponse to the 'room note query', "I don't want to encourage you, so I'm not going to say anything." Certainly sounds like she likes it, but doesn't want to admit it, for fear that mouth cancer is sure to follow.

In sum, I highly recommend this blend to anyone who hasn't tried it. I don't recommend it because you are guaranteed to like it, but you certainly owe it to yourself to experience this unique blend. Some hate it, some love it. Try it, and work with it, and see where you fall. As for me, I'll be looking out for a ten-ounce tin next.

I decided to give a free sample of F&S a try, after reading that President Gerald Ford was a fan of this. The aroma is pleasant, the strength is nearly overwhelming after a full bowl, and it?s best smoked in the car or wherever else pipes are tolerated. F&S doesn?t have a luxurious flavor but it?s entertaining.

I am hesitant to throw in my 2 cents worth for a tobacco I don't like, but I guess I'll kick a man while he's down. Little chunks of tobacco reminding me of the texture of Edgeworth Ready Rub, smells like soapy perfume, tastes the same. A bit of tongue bite as well. I love the tin art though, and I recognize that this may be an acquired taste. I wonder if this would be better in a pipe well caked with only this tobacco? I will never know. I love old school stuff though, which is why it's hard for me to do this review without feeling like I just yelled at an old man in front of his wife. If you like Mixture 79 this would be a nice addition to your rotation.

I think that Redd nailed this one, saying "FS. is a slighly better version of MIXTURE 79."

This, of course, is not saying much for the virtues of F&S, which is but another soapy, licorice flavored repugnance.

On a positive note, it's difficult to find. :^)

I was prompted to buy this tobacco because I read that President Ford liked it. I wanted to like it. Sorry to say that the soapy perfume taste was not for me. It took a while to get the taste out of my pipe. Harsh and hot.

Ok, so this review may be a bit biased. I have to admit to loving this tobacco since childhood...No I didn't smoke it..I remember seeing the ads in Field and Stream, Sports Afield, and Outdoor life, and thinking wow....that looks cool, a man's smoke. I have wanted to try Field and stream since then. And after taking up the pipe again after a 15 year hiatus, was pleased to see that HOW brought this old time classic back. (When I smoked before in the late eighties, F&S was NO WHERE TO BE FOUND), Well got my 2oz sampler on Monday and since then have smoked three bowls. WOW, it is so nice in life when our expectations and hopes match reality....I love this baccy, the licorice flavor is right up my alley, I love the fact that this burns so dry and cool and the flavor lasts through the bowl. I can see where this would not be for everyone, but for me...its my new favorite.

This is the first "floral" type tobacco I have ever tried. In the tin it is a good smelling aromatic with what I recognize as burley being the predominent facet of the blend. Then I lit my first bowl. It is a unique scent that hits the nose right away soapy to say the least, but as I kept puffing I had to note that there was no bite or odd taste from the tobacco and was rather mild. I could not detect any maple or anise flavor but it wasn't a bad flavor either. Odd the room note for me was not the flavor in my mouth well maybe a bit on the after taste but I just tasted tobacco. Anyway I feel this is a good intro to the floral type blends for the price is so low. Upon smoking the tin I will go back and try Bourbon Street and give a lil contrast comparison review. Worth a shot for something completely different.

Of the five different HOW blends I've tried, Field & Stream was perhaps the toughest to deal with. Was I smoking road kill from the Field or dead fish from the Stream? Take your pick, there was little I liked about this blend. For that matter, none of the HOW blends I tried really grabbed me. This blend may have some history about it, having been around a long time, although it escapes me how. Perhaps it was 'state of the art' in blending at some time, but thankfully times have changed for the better. There is little to recommend here...maybe just saying that it burned in a pipe is enough. Even the Country Doctor can't (or shouldn't) save this blend from a flat taste, so-so room note and overall disappointment. I tossed what I didn't smoke of this, not even thinking about possibly ageing it or blending it with something else. Why ruin another blend mixing this in?

This tobacco (to me) is what I call a 'classic cut' in that it's not really a cube, definitely not a ribbon (as is stated in the description above) but is more of a plug cut in style.

The tobacco in the pouch smells "different" in a Gawith and Hoggarth way and is the perfect humidity to fill and light.

For about 10 years I was a tobacconist. The old men used to come in with their pouches of "drug-store" tobacco and would not really tamp the tobacco into the bowl; They would literally dip the pipe into the pouch and let the tobacco fill the bowl and dip the pipe again until the bowl was full; then they'd take their finger and gently press the tobacco down, light up, tamp again and smile. A true gravity fill?. This is how I fill a pipe with Field and Stream for best results.

The tobacco, upon lighting, has an aromatic quality but not in the way we think of aromatics in general. This is more of a G&H type of aromatic. The predominant flavor that I get out of this blend is licorice..and plenty of it!

F&S is medium in strength, enough to fulfull my taste for stronger tobaccos. The tobacco stays lit well and smokes pretty darn consistently all the way down. Nothing complicated and somehow charming in that "old school" sort of way.

If you are looking for natural tobacco then this isn't for you. Mostly Burley but the flavoring is going to be one of those things that you either like or hate. Thoroughly enjoyable but not recommended to those who don't like licorice! Fortunately I do.

Well first of all, the obvious. The tobacco description listed in the heading isn't even close. If you go to the HOW website, they describe F&S as "100% rectangular-cut burley blend with a traditional maple, licorice and other flavorings".

That out of the way: this is a nice, smooth, cool burning all burley smoke that is about as retro as it gets. There are those who are put off by the licorice flavoring, which for me tends to burn into a somewhat floral note. In this blend it's not over the top and it's actually nicely balanced by the barely discernable maple (and apparently "other") flavors. A few minutes into each bowl I find the flavors settling down and the slow burning burley comes into it's own. It smokes down to the nubs without any souring or bite at all. Makes a great "puttering in the shop" kind of tobacco, with enough flavor to remind you of why you took up the pipe in the first place. The room note is very agreeable.

I recommend you avoid the pouch (which other's have noted tends to be too dry) and buy one of the 2 or 4 oz. tins: they come with just the right moisture and seem to be fresher.

I'm surprised that I seem to be in the minority here, I really enjoy this blend. I'm an full english lover and was wonderfully surprised by this blend. It has wonderful licorice/marshmallo tin aroma and room note. It is a very even and consistant blend,burns nicely and evenly, never harsh, no bite. Very enjoyable and a great price as a bonus. I made another call to House of Windsor (those guys are great to speak with and enjoy talking about their lines) and found out some trivia about this blend. President Gerald Ford and Attorney General John Mitchell smoked this blend. I also get lots of compliments from family members who enjoy the room note. Last but not least, I also enjoy the art work on the tin. I suggest giving it a try, I don't think you will be let down

As much as I'd like to enjoy this old classic I cannot. This blend taste like licorice perfume. It taste's foul, will foul your pipe, and is probably the nastiest tasting blend I have ever had. That said aromatic fans and licorice lovers will probably LOVE this blend and should completely disregard my review. Had I known of the licorice/soap/perfume combo ahead of time I wouldn't have bothered. Sorry HOW 12/25/04 Merry Xmas!

Field & Stream may be my second favorite HOW blend, with Mapleton being no. 1. This is a powerful aromatic that makes no apologies. It has that room-filling old fashioned pipe smoke aroma which convinced many of us to take up the hobby in the first place. The aroma and taste are, I believe, dominated by licorice and perhaps maple and/or other natural flavorings. I find the flavor and aroma ro be absolutely delectable. The cut is a typical and traditional small burley cube cut that cannot be packed too tight and is easy to fill your pipe with. I keep a tub of this blend around at all times. The charring light releases a slight Gawith & Hoggarth soapy note, but this disappears completely upon the second lighting of your pipe. The one floral note released here is nothing compared to those blends produced in the Lake District of England. What I find most attractive about this blend (and Bourbon Street, for that matter) is that it has substantial strength and body; it is not one of those light aromatics that are all flavorings and aromatic agents that burn off quickly so that one if left with nothing but hot steam after a short while. I find this blend quite satisfying. I give Field & Stream a grade of "A-".

Field and Stream is bone dry in the pouch and has a somewhat sweet odor. With a sprinkle of water and a few days rest the licorice flavor pops out. Put to the test, the aroma and flavor are mild and remind me of a cheap after shave my Grandpaw used to wear. Back in the 60's.

I see where they are going with this blend. It is a respectable smoke, if you like the flavor. I do not, which is why "not my cup of tea" is a fair assessment.

This classic from the House of Windsor is one that I think most of us have just had an urge to try since the excellent P & T article. That being said it is also nice to search out tobacco that is not only of good quality, but also cheap and available. Not a bad combination at all.

This particular blend was somewhat unique. The cut in the little tinfoil pouch was a rough cube cut. Very good for outdoors smoking. It lit easily and stayed lit well. It smoked dry and clean.

The taste was what set me back. I suppose I was not thinking of Lakeland floral when I bought the tobacco, but that is what I got. Or at least a hint of it. For some this is a prize to find, for others not. I fall into the latter group.I like the floral offerings from SG and HG. This blend too I found pleasant. The floral notes were not over-pronounced nor was there any hint of bite. A cool smooth smoke when you dont want an overpowering tobacco or something fussy. All in all I would recommend giving it a try.

*And editoral addition here: This blend will leave its esscence behind in the pipe, so be careful to clean it well or dedicate a pipe to it.

This is surprisingly bad. It tastes awful, and contaminates the pipe to boot. The tin aroma is enough to turn the stomach. Blecch!

Cube cut Burley with a little flue cured Virginia, flavored with some strange something. This will goop up a pipe and make it taste and smell like the aromatic agent that this tobacco is flavored with. Burns hot,taste is middle of the road in sweetness, but the room aroma is really good. Sorry, this old blend just didn't excite me at all.

This one is another winner from the House of Windsor. It is the only pipe tobacco I ever smoked that seemed to be mentholated and I liked the effect more than I would have normally thought. It did remind me of Bourbon Street which I didn't care for one bit. This ,however, has a delicious tobacco taste underneath all of the topping. A very unique tobacco I will come back to in the future!

Another tobacco I wanted to like. I set out to try all of the "old school" tobaccos reviewed by P&T magazine.

Sadly, I did not like this much. Sort of tasted like a stronger Bond Street. For some reason I think this tobacco has the herb Deer Tongue in it, but am not sure that it does. Maybe it is the licorice topping. Either way . . . too "mentholated" for me. If you liked Bond Street, you might like this. I did not. Not saying it is a bad tobacco, just not my style.

Otherwise, a decent natural-style tobacco with cubed Burley and some bright flake. A bit dry but not too much so. No modern glycerin topping, etc.

This is a plesent tobacco. I have smoked many House of Windsor blends, but for me, this one I could turn to again and again without getting bored. On first light, it has a pronounced aromatic flavor. Not sweet, but cool, and fresh. Soon after you begin, the blend settles into a full rich tobacco flavor that continually supprises you with a hint of the aromatic. President Ford found this to be his favorite blend. Not the most accomplished president, but he knew his tobacco!

I have really been impressed with the House of Windsor blends that have recently been re-released. I tend to steer away from heavily flavored aromatics, especially ones that have a perfumy aroma in the tin or pouch. I was very surprised by this blend. I smokes very cool and dry for as much flavoring as it has. It is very flavorful and has a great room note. When you light this stuff up, even the most ardent anti-smoking zealot will thank you for lighting up. This has been a nice change for me and I will continue to smoke it.

I have never had the original Phillip Morris Field and Stream so this is a review on the strengths and weaknesses of the HOW blend and some comparisons to the Sutliff Match Field & Stream. This was a gift from a friend and this package was from 2006.

When I opened the Humidor I was greeted by a strong, almost overwhelming perfumey aroma of Licorice with a mild earthy background that also consisted of light wood, a whisper of vanilla and a touch of liquor. The perfumey Licorice almost drowned out the other aromas. NOTE- The MATCH does not have this perfumey artificial Licorice aroma, it has a natural Anise/Licorice aroma and flavor. The Tobacco was a bit dry when it arrived and I re-hydrated it over several days and it was perfect for smoking.

Filling the bowl it seemed to be an odd assortment of chunks, ribbons and pieces just like the match. The tobacco seemed to burn pretty evenly except some of the chunks took longer to burn. It burned down to a nice gray ash with the perfumey licorice wanting to bite and it would definitely bite if pushed. I sipped this slowly. The smoke was nice and billowy even though I was sipping this slowly to savor the flavor.

Upon lighting the flavor of the perfumey Licorice that was somewhat pleasant and slightly overpowering appeared and briefly overshadowed the background flavors. NOTE-THE MATCH BY SUTLIFF has a natural Anise/Licorice flavor and aroma that is pleasant and balances with the other flavors and aromas in a much better manner The Burley was a beautiful medium strength and full flavored and smooth. I could taste a hint of liquor, light citrus and a touch of grass with a nice earthy and pleasant woody taste with a drop of honey in the background also and it became a bit more obvious after the original perfumey Anise/Licorice burned off a bit. This was however, a sweet tasting smoke just like the Match, but the Match was a bit more pleasant. At halfway the Perfumey Licorice declined a bit to a more natural licorice/anise flavor and A slight Soap taste with a touch of floral came through. The taste did not get harsh like some tobaccos and remained smooth and pleasant. When done there was a medium amount of moisture in the bowl. Average amounts of re-lights.

There was a pleasant aftertaste that lasted a hour or so after finishing this bowl. The room note was a pleasant though somewhat perfumey.

I do like the House of Windsor version of Field& Stream and found it to be a nice smoke. However, the main difference between it and the Match is this has a artificial perfumey Anise/Licorice and with Match Field & Stream it is a much more pleasant natural flavor that I believe matches perfectly the flavor in the HOW version with the exception of the artificial perfume flavor in the HOW version. THE MATCH does a great job at reproducing this with a natural flavor. While this will bite, the match won't. If they had used a natural Anise/Licorice flavor this would rate a 4 stars out of 4 stars like the Match. But, the perfumey Licorice causes a imbalance at first in the flavors and aromas, but as it burns off it becomes a wonderful smoke. A pleasant long lasting aftertaste during and after the smoke. This burns at a faster pace which combined with the perfume can cause a bite if puffed.

Having tried this and the Match gives me a deeper insight as to how a perfumey flavor can cause tongue bite, a perceived difference in flavors of these two blends when the only difference I found was the rate of burn and in the perfumey taste This gets a 3.3 out of 4 stars.

I guess if I was on a desert island and this was the only pipe tobacco, It would probably make do. But, in the real world with so many blends to choose from, Field and Stream falls into my mediocre/boring column. I smoked it once and threw the rest away. Life is too short to waste on a mediocre smoke.

this tobacco is easy to pack, and lite. taists outdoorsey. appears to be a burley base. try p.pesandcigars.com to find it. i am not really crazy about this tobacco.

You have to dry this out if you don't like the soapy taste. Let the tobacco sit out on the table in an open container for a few days or a week and it smokes just fine. The flavor is OK. I probably won't be buying this again as there are so many others I like better. I didn't mind trying an oz though.

when I first tried this blend (from the pouch) a few months ago, the "old lady perfume" smell was a huge let down, especially with the great picture on the box. I stuck it away and didnt even think about it, until an older fellow told me to rub it completely out, and use a cob...well I took his advise and I can say its allot better. the casing is less pronounced and the burly leaf comes through well. Overall I sort of like Field and Stream now, for a change of pace, and the fact that its the only HOW blend that acually has nicotine in it, Im sold...Two stars says I...and perhaps I'll even finish the pouch!!

It took me a while to get hang of this blend. While FS is Sweet it is yet very smokey. Sort of like a drugstore Cigar with the wrapper being sweet but the cigar smoke itself being harsh,very 1940's Americana. Now once you relize this approach you will then understand this pipe tobacco better. Years ago a man smoked cigarettes Daily, Cigars for special occasions(or a night out with the fellas), and pipes on the weekends or after work to relax. All their tobacco needs were purchased at a local 5 & dime or candy store. The smokes were generally very close in taste. As to not sway you away from one or the other. Now as for FS the taste is close to a sweet cotton candy or sweet cream corn. FS burns fast no matter how slow you smoke it. You can go through a bowl quickly. The room note is alright but the aroma is closer to a sweet mildew aroma. A Good smoke to think about life during the old days. The one thing that I really like about this blend is the cut of the tobacco. Very easy to fill a bowl no matter how much falls on the floor.

07/19/2004 This one I didn't like initially. It tasted like soap the first time I smoked it. I put it in the "to give away" area of my various blends. A later encounter with this pouch found the soap taste barely noticable. In fact, I started to like this tobacco! Now when I light this blend it tastes like an honest smooth rich cubed Burley. I had no problems with tongue bite, maybe because it is strong enough flavored to not require any heavy puffing. Update 11/06/2006: No longer smoking this very often. Have found better Burley blends and have had some issues with consistency. Still a better than average "drug store" Burley.

Decent Burley, with a strong licorice topping. Not destined to be one of my favorites, but not bad. (Unless of course you hate licorice) It can be tough to light at times.

A Cube cut, burley base, topdressed tinder. Dry as anything I have ever seen in the pouch. I tasted no Licorice, however, a flowery top dressing was noted. This Blend Scorched my Tounge upon the first match, but then settled right down into a clean dry tollerable smoke. 2.75 out of 4 stars.

Another disappointment from the House of Windsor. As a lover of Mixture No. 79 and Grouse-Moor, two highly distinctive, love-'em-or-hate-'em tobaccos, I was hoping from the reviews here that Field and Stream would be right up my alley. As with Bourbon Street, however, Field and Stream ultimately left me cold. Not freezing, but cold nonetheless.

My fellow reviewers are right when they identify the major flavor of this tobacco as licorice. It's pouch aroma is immediate and powerful, and when lit, Field and Stream retains its strong flavoring. I didn't particularly care for it, but it is cool and somewhat refreshing, and you won't find another tobacco that tastes like this (for whatever that's worth). And yes, Gerald Ford, a dedicated pipe man until he gave it up 10 years ago, made Field and Stream his blend of choice.

My major complaint about this tobacco is its cut. This is simply too chunky for my taste; I prefer a ribbon cut any day. It is also, like Bourbon Street, ludicrously dry in the pouch, which, combined with the thickness of its cut, makes it something of a bitch to get and keep lit.

To each his own, however. I'm grateful that House of Windsor has revived these old blends and kept (mostly) their original packaging. They've done a service to us pipe smokers, and maybe the tin of Revelation that's in the mail will redeem the last two blends. We'll see.

I truly have enjoyed many of the H.O.W. blends but I have had a hard time getting this one to grow on me. The only problem I seem to have with it is the cut. The tin I had was cut much finer than say the Bourbon Street I tried and therefore burned hotter. I think the flavor is very comparable to Bourbon Steet, which I do like, however I will not re-order this blend.

It's worth trying. However,a little bit of this goes a very long way. The Lakeland Floral is overwhelming and it lingers in your pipe for a very long time.

First of all,You've just gotta love the nostalgic presentation here.It comes in a brown plaid pouch packaged in a box with beautiful art work of a mountain reflected into a lake in Autumn.When out purchasing some of my usual english blends at my local tobacconist I came across a few boxes of the stuff.It seemed quite a bargin at under three dollars so I purchased a pouch.I suppose I'm a little biased here because I just never warmed up to aromatics of any kind.However this is different.It's not harsh,does'nt burn the tongue and smokes fairly dry.In closing although it's not something I'd buy by the case,it was surely a nice change of pace.Highly reccomended to the die hard aromatic fans and those who need an un-offensive tobacco to smoke in public... Like others have noted, a pretty interesting blend. I had wanted to try this for some time but didn't want to buy the big can from JR incase I hated it. I think the P&T mag helped a few on-line shops get the small pouch and thats what I wound up buying. Upon opening the pouch, I also got hit with a heavy aroma of black licorice. I usually hate licorice, so this didn't set in well from the get go. I do like the cut, though, and it loaded easily and burned slowly making that part an enjoyable smoke, although it needed a bunch of re-lights to get started. Thankfully, the lit pipe didn't taste like the aroma and it was very much like the scented flakes others talk about. Unlike pipestuds sample, mine was the perfect humidity and burned for a long long time, but the flavor wasn't what I had expected. I'll finish the pouch for sure and there's a slight possibility I'll buy another but it might be a longshot.
