If you're a fan of Larry's Blend, you know it's a very rich, Latakia-laden pipe tobacco. If you love your blend with lots of smoky leaf, you now have a little more subtle choice - Hearth & Home Signature Larry's Morning Blend. The name might indicate that this is low in Latakia, but that's not the case. There's still lots of Cyprian leaf here, but the Virginias are brighter, along with the Orientals, so the flavor is a touch softer, but it's still bold and robust.
Hearth & Home - Larry's Morning Blend (Signature Series).
The mixture includes one or two coarser ribbons, but also a few twiggy pieces. The clear plastic topping to the tobacco, underneath the metal lid, conceals a perfectly hydrated blend.
I find the Latakia has the most alacrity and outweighs the other tobaccos. The Virginias don't really have a say in the flavour, it's driven by the smoky Lat', which is supported by a buttery sweetness from the Orientals. The burn goes without fault: slow, cool, producing a bite-free smoke. The room-note could be considered a little too strong, but I don't find it offensive. And finally the nicotine: a healthy amount.
Larry's Morning Blend? A belting smoke.
Pipe Used: Stanwell
Age When Smoked: Not stamped, but two month in cellar
I hate that I can’t find this anymore! I would have stocked up if I would have known.. Anyway, this is one of the greatest Latakia smoke blends I’ve ever seen! Lovely and intense smokiness and almost smoked bbq dominates this gem. The Virginia’s do well keeping a straightforward balance to this smoky blend and the orientals add some under layers of sweetness. This is a tobacco blend that I smoked 80% of mornings when I could get it. It’s superb and really should be brought back. If you like smoky Latakia blends then this(for me) is arguably the greatest I have ever packed into a pipe. It’s sensational and a shame it was discontinued!!
Visually, it's a dark mix of ribbons with a few light strands here and there. It opens quite well with a blend that leans a bit towards the fuller side. Smoky Latakia leads, while the fragrant Orientals compete for a close second. The Virginias can often get lost, but they're there, providing balance, a bit of hay and a tad red Virginia earth and fruit . The last 3rd is unimpressive and gets a little muddled, but not unpleasant. Short aftertaste. 3 stars.
This is a great, very underrated blend. I believe it is now discontinued but if you can find a tin, buy it!
The best way I can describe it is Nightcap on steroids. They are strikingly similar blends, but Larry's Morning Blend is fuller and heavier on the latakia. If you like Nightcap, you'll love this blend. Get some while you can!
